Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract. The year 2010 was characterized by devastating flooding in central and eastern Europe, including Romania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. This study focuses on floods that occurred during the summer of 2010 in the Prut River basin, which has a high percentage of hydrotechnical infrastructure. Strong floods occurred in eastern Romania on the Prut River, which borders the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, and the Siret River. Atmospheric instability from 21 June to 1 July 2010 caused remarkable amounts of rain, with rates of 51.2 mm/50 min and 42.0 mm/30 min. In the middle Prut basin, there are numerous ponds that help mitigate floods as well as provide water for animals, irrigation, and so forth. The peak discharge of the Prut River during the summer of 2010 was 2310 m3 s−1 at the Rădăuţi-Prut gauging station. High discharges were also recorded on downstream tributaries, including the Baseu, Jijia, and Miletin. High discharges downstream occurred because of water from the middle basin and the backwater from the Danube (a historic discharge of 16 300 m3 s−1). The floods that occurred in the Prut basin in the summer of 2010 could not be controlled completely because the discharges far exceeded foreseen values.

Abstract:
In “Something prety out of very little”: Graniteville Mill Village, 1848, Lisa Goff describes how Charleston entrepreneur William Gregg built Graniteville, South Carolina, to prove the viability of southern manufacturing, which he believed could help avert war between South and North, and to quell planters’ fears that industry would mar the beauty of the South. The village's whitewashed Carpenter Gothic cottages, with matching hotel, school, and church designed by Richard Upjohn, were intended to instill virtues of hard work, clean living, and respect for authority in a white workforce drawn from surrounding farms. Gregg exercised a patriarch's control over his industrial utopia, but the nicknames workers gave the place, and what they told visiting missionaries, show that they experienced Gregg's Gothic hamlet on their own terms. An avid gardener and horticulturist active in the Episcopal Church, Gregg would have been aware of the claims to moral superiority associated with the Gothic Revival style. Goff's analysis of letters, published articles, corporate reports, and advertisements in local newspapers reveals that Gregg's strategies of social contol—adapted from his study of Robert Owen and David Dale—had sinister underpinnings: programmed for hard work at low wages by the “ethical” architecture and orderly “natural” landscape, a white, largely female workforce would insulate the Graniteville Mill from the effects of abolition, should it come.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Bird fauna long-term monitoring in the Romanian lower Prut river basin In the present paper, we give data on the bird' fauna's dynamic during the last 18 years in the Romanian Lower Prut River basin. This valley shelters a good level of the biodiversity being very well protected through the border status, but due the low level of the industrial development, too, despite an increasing of the human pressure in the last years. We recorded in this area some very rare breeding bird species for Romania - Platalea leucorodia, Plegadis falcinellus, Limosa limosa, Recurvirostra avosetta, Himantopus himantopus, Luscinia svecica, etc. but also some globally threatened species like Phalacrocorax pygmeus, Aythya nyroca or Crex crex. In this sector of the Prut River basin three Important Birds Areas (IBA) were delimited, all included in the "Romanian Nature 2000 Network".

Abstract:
Abstract. Summarizing the scientific publications and production reports of enterprises that studied the environmental status of the Prut River in the last decades, as well as relevant reports in the periodical press and other media, it has been found that the quality of its water in the upper reaches is significantly deteriorating. The purpose of this article was to assess the quality of water in the Prut River in the upper flow according to various methods (including the complex of environmental indexes) to determine the degree of its pollution. The article presents the results of calculations of the complex ecological index (Ie) for assessing the water quality of the Prut river in the vicinity of the city of Yaremche. To establish sources of pollution of this river, an experimental study of the physical and chemical parameters of its water was carried out. A series of water samples from the Prut River in the area from the village Dora (suburb of Yaremche). upstream to the village Tatariv is studied laboratoryally. Samples were selected at six points of observation. The studies were conducted in two seasons: fall (september) and winter (january). The main pollutants and their concentrations in the selected samples are determined. Modern laboratory techniques and equipment are used for laboratory research. On the basis of laboratory examination of water samples from the river Prut in the upper reaches (the outskirts of the city of Yaremche) it was established that the water in this area is sufficiently clean; excess MPC value is not observed. An exception may be only a sample of water within the city of Yaremche, where there are increased concentrations of phosphates. It is also shown that winter water samples contain slightly more pollutants (including biogenic ions) than autumn. These facts may also be partly explained by the increase in airborne acid oxide emissions and their interaction with river water. According to the results of calculating the complex ecological index it was established that the Prut River water in the studied area belongs to the 2nd class of quality (the state is good). Separate samples from the control section within the city of Yaremche showed an increased value of the complex ecological index (Ie is 3.21 and 3.36 for the summer and winter series, respectively). The reason for this increase in the index is the pollution of the Prut River in the studied area due to the increase in anthropogenic pressure on it over the past years.

Abstract:
Obejmował on społeczeństwo, gospodarkę, także obyczajowość.

Abstract:
In Germany, the study of journalism has a long tradition. Löff elholz (2004b) identifi ed the work of the writer and literary historian Robert Eduard Prutz (1816-1872) as being the ancestor of journalism theory. In 1845, long before the establishment of newspaper studies (“Zeitungskunde”) as a fi eld of research, Prutz published “The History of German Journalism.” In later years the theoretical study of journalism was dominated by normative approaches, which continued for many decades. The belief that journalistic talent, similar to artistic talent, lies in the personality of the journalist (see Dovifat 1962) endured well into the 1970’s. At this time the scholarly discussion was mainly centered on the journalist as an individual who could barley live up to the normative expectations placed on news people. The result was a long-lasting (into the 1990s) array of often romantic demands on journalists which they could hardly fulfi ll.

Abstract:
Ukraine is distinguished for four stages of farming formation, three of which can be clearly observed in the Chernivtsi Oblast. The majority of farming economies in the Chernivtsi Oblast (793 economies as of 1 January 2010) are smallholder farms. The areas exceeding 100 hectares – a weighing precondition for profitable economic management – are available with only 45 economies. Agricultural production in small formations is predominantly a family business. Choosing agricultural specialization, farmers consider their limited material-technical and financial capabilities, demand and supply within the regional agrarian market, their own experience and preferences. The Chernivtsi Oblast is divided into three rayons of farming specialization: the Dniester–Prut Rayon, the Prut-Siret Rayon, and the Carpathian Rayon. Key words: farming economies, stages of farming formation in the Chernivtsi Oblast, profitability, specialization.

This applies to all components of the landscape, ecosystems. But the central, main problem is hydromorphological transformation, associated primarily with the extraction of river alluvium. In recent decades the relevant research has been conducted. At the same time, negative processes continue to develop and require appropriate development of monitoring, database formation, understanding of the causes and patterns. In particular, the database should necessarily include data on the territorial structure of the river valley, the young river landscape. Thus, there is an urgent task to identify and assess the current state of the young river landscape of the Prut and systematize data on the patterns of processes of its hydromorphological transformation. The purpose of the study is to systematize information on the main processes of anthropogenic impact and the corresponding processes of transformation of the hydromorphological basis of the young river landscape of the Prut within Chernivtsi region to identify their patterns, consequences and assess and, on this basis, their current state. The object of research is the young river landscape of the Prut (within the Chernivtsi region), which develops on the basis of the riverbed and floodplain. The subject of research - manifestations, patterns of consequences of anthropogenic transformation of the hydromorphological basis of the young landscape of the Prut River. Methods, research procedure - hydromorphological analysis of the territorial structure of the river valley with the formation of a database of territorial landscape features in the form of homogeneous areas; systematic analysis of factors of anthropogenic transformation of the young river landscape; analysis of changes in the morphology of the riverbed and floodplain using GIS and GPS technologies. The state of research in the context of the research. A number of scientific works had been devoted to the study of anthropogenic changes in the bed and floodplain of the Prut River. In particular, regarding changes in morphology, these are the works of Yu. Yushchenko, A. Kyrylyuk, M. Pasichnyk, M. Nastyuk [3,4,7,9,11]. An important issue of the study is to identify the territorial structure of the river hydromorphological landscape. This is one of the important tasks of riverbed science [10] and landscape studies. Relevant studies are conducted in relation to rivers and river valleys of the Uppon Prut system [5, 9, 11,12]. Conclusions.Threats from catastrophic floods are an important factor in shaping the relations between society and the Carpathian rivers. Flood protection programs have long been developed. An important element are the embankment dams. Currently, most dams perform their function quite well. Last but not least, this is due to the entrenchment of riverbed. But this positive has a "bitter taste". In addition, an objective assessment of the effectiveness of flood protection and shore protection requires a thorough study of their entire history, which is the subject of a significant separate study. The risk factor for floods has influenced not only the objective formation of the system of protection by society, but also the "not very correct" use of the concepts of "harmful effects of water" and the regulation of riverbeds. It is known that due to the entrenchment of riverbeds, engineering structures in their channels are destroyed. But the entrenchment of riverbeds, as we found out, is anthropogenically caused. What is the "harmful effect of water"? Processes in society are probably harmful… The main factor in the anthropogenic transformation of the hydromorphological basis of the young landscape of the Prut River was the selection of alluvium from the riverbed. This led to a significant entrenchment of the river, especially in places of picking of river sediments (over 4 meters), and an increase in the relative height of floodplains with a corresponding transformation of their hydrological regime and other consequences. When the river entrenchment happened, the riverbed and the flow move to a lower hypsometric level and the objective laws of the flow-channel system begin to appear on it. These are the laws of formation and development of certain forms, the laws of hydromorphology. This includes the development of so-called intra-riverbed forms, and the development of riverbed forms (branches, meanders). It can also lead to conflicts with human interests: erosion of shores, coastal areas, buildings, etc. In such conditions, protective control work is really needed. But they can and should be carried out without the selection of river alluvium, which is not always in the case. By selecting alluvium again, we are only exacerbating the problem. Thus, it would seem that fair ideas of protection against dangerous phenomena and regulation of the flow-channel system are actually used incorrectly and lead to a worsening of the situation. A dangerous anthropogenic geomorphological process is developing. According to all methods of assessing the state of the hydromorphological basis of the landscape for the Prut River, estimates of "very bad" or "pre-crisis state" were obtained.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Climate change and intensive hydropower development pose serious challenges to the sustainable water supply of natural and social systems. This study’s purpose is to statistically estimate the complex influence of these factors on the Prut River flow. Its methodical approach is based on a comparative analysis of the flow in 1961–1990 and 1991–2018, reflecting the regional climate before and after an intensive global warming onset, and in 1950–1975 and 1980–2017, before and after the construction of the Stanca-Costesti hydropower plant (HPP) on the Prut’s riverbed. The compared statistics include annual, seasonal and monthly averages and trends of climatic and hydrological parameters for each period. Since the 1990s a statistically significant increase has been demonstrated in the basin-wide annual mean, maximum and minimum temperatures, of 1.04, 1.11 and 1.21 °C, respectively. Negative trends of annual precipitation were negligibly small and statistically insignificant in both periods (−2.1 mm and −0.6 mm/year, respectively), with annual totals differing by 1.4 mm. The seasonal transformation and changes of the Prut river flow, showing a small annual increase in the period 1961–1990 and a 1.8% decrease over next decades, are in good agreement with variability patterns of temperature (positive tendencies) and precipitation (negative tendencies). The operation of mean-capacity HPP has no significant impact on the total water discharge downstream, but modifies the seasonal distribution of the river’s streamflow.
