Abstract:
Bovine digital dermatitis (DD) is a contagious infectious cause of lameness in cattle with unknown definitive etiologies. Many of the bacterial species detected in metagenomic analyses of DD lesions are difficult to culture, and their antimicrobial resistance status is largely unknown. Recently, a novel proximity ligation-guided metagenomic approach (Hi-C ProxiMeta) has been used to identify bacterial reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) directly from microbial communities, without the need to culture individual bacteria. The objective of this study was to track tetracycline resistance determinants in bacteria involved in DD pathogenesis using Hi-C. A pooled sample of macerated tissues from clinical DD lesions was used for this purpose. Metagenome deconvolution using ProxiMeta resulted in the creation of 40 metagenome-assembled genomes with ≥80% complete genomes, classified into five phyla. Further, 1959 tetracycline resistance genes and ARGs conferring resistance to aminoglycoside, beta-lactams, sulfonamide, phenicol, lincosamide, and erythromycin were identified along with their bacterial hosts. In conclusion, the widespread distribution of genes conferring resistance against tetracycline and other antimicrobials in bacteria of DD lesions is reported for the first time. Use of proximity ligation to identify microorganisms hosting specific ARGs holds promise for tracking ARGs transmission in complex microbial communities.

Abstract:
Platforms have the ability to create connected digital spaces where different actors co-exist and work together. The paper explores the power of platforms as enablers of a new channel of proximity, called digital proximity. It argues that platforms enable interactions, information flows, and network formation through digital proximity, which can effectively reinforce externalities complementing existing proximity forms or bypassing physical space barriers. Firms and industries adopting platform-based tools can create meaningful channels for increasing their proximity at an intra- and inter-firm level. The study uses data from the Digital Economy and Society database covering 25 EU countries for the years 2019 and 2021. It calculates the degree of adoption by EU firms at the national level for a set of selected platform-based technologies closely related to different proximity forms. It investigates the relationship between digital proximity, firm size, and industry, also introducing a geographical dimension. The evidence suggests that large firms have managed to integrate platform-based technologies to a greater extent, whereas small and medium firms still lack leveraging the full power of platforms. Increased adoption at the country level is also related to increased productivity, indicating the geographical dimension of platforms. The paper argues that platforms can be seen as a new means for balancing uneven spatial capabilities for producing proximity, indicating a high potential for fostering territorial cohesion. It concludes by suggesting that future research should measure the effects of digital proximity on development and their causal relationship to better elaborate on the implications of platforms on development.

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper aims to determine if there is a spatial dependence in the entrepreneurial activity among countries. The existence of a “digital proximity” could explain the spatial pattern of entrepreneurship. Design/methodology/approach – This question is empirically addressed by using a five-period, 2008-2012, panel data for 35 countries. A spatial fixed effects panel data model is estimated by using the total entrepreneurial activity published by the global entrepreneurship monitor as the dependent variable. Findings – A significant negative influence of the digital proximity on the entrepreneurial activity is observed. Mobile broadband (MB) direct effect is positive while the indirect effect (the spatial spillovers) is negative, leading to a negative total effect on the total entrepreneurial activity. This result is contrary to non-spatial models’ results. Besides, a higher MB penetration in a country would lead to a competitive advantage fostering its opportunities for entrepreneurship, but reducing those of its neighbours’. Originality/value – This paper examines the relationship between information and communication technology (ICT) and entrepreneurship, by introducing the spatial effects is the main contribution. This paper expands the scant literature on the ICT impact on entrepreneurship. Results obtained support policies towards enforcing innovation, education and reducing entry regulations for encouraging entrepreneurship. Meanwhile, MB policies could counteract the entrepreneurial policies’ results due to the spatial dependence.

Abstract:
Background Mitigation of the spread of infection relies on targeted approaches aimed at preventing nonhousehold interactions. Contact tracing in the form of digital proximity tracing apps has been widely adopted in multiple countries due to its perceived added benefits of tracing speed and breadth in comparison to traditional manual contact tracing. Assessments of user responses to exposure notifications through a guided approach can provide insights into the effect of digital proximity tracing app use on managing the spread of SARS-CoV-2. Objective The aim of this study was to demonstrate the use of Venn diagrams to investigate the contributions of digital proximity tracing app exposure notifications and subsequent mitigative actions in curbing the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in Switzerland. Methods We assessed data from 4 survey waves (December 2020 to March 2021) from a nationwide panel study (COVID-19 Social Monitor) of Swiss residents who were (1) nonusers of the SwissCovid app, (2) users of the SwissCovid app, or (3) users of the SwissCovid app who received exposure notifications. A Venn diagram approach was applied to describe the overlap or nonoverlap of these subpopulations and to assess digital proximity tracing app use and its associated key performance indicators, including actions taken to prevent SARS-CoV-2 transmission. Results We included 12,525 assessments from 2403 participants, of whom 50.9% (1222/2403) reported not using the SwissCovid digital proximity tracing app, 49.1% (1181/2403) reported using the SwissCovid digital proximity tracing app and 2.5% (29/1181) of the digital proximity tracing app users reported having received an exposure notification. Most digital proximity tracing app users (75.9%, 22/29) revealed taking at least one recommended action after receiving an exposure notification, such as seeking SARS-CoV-2 testing (17/29, 58.6%) or calling a federal information hotline (7/29, 24.1%). An assessment of key indicators of mitigative actions through a Venn diagram approach reveals that 30% of digital proximity tracing app users (95% CI 11.9%-54.3%) also tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 after having received exposure notifications, which is more than 3 times that of digital proximity tracing app users who did not receive exposure notifications (8%, 95% CI 5%-11.9%). Conclusions Responses in the form of mitigative actions taken by 3 out of 4 individuals who received exposure notifications reveal a possible contribution of digital proximity tracing apps in mitigating the spread of SARS-CoV-2. The application of a Venn diagram approach demonstrates its value as a foundation for researchers and health authorities to assess population-level digital proximity tracing app effectiveness by providing an intuitive approach for calculating key performance indicators.

Abstract:
The article compares the way in which another person appears to me on the one hand in physical communication and on the other in digital communication. The comparison is again based on a distinction between two very different forms of proximity and distance relationships. Physical proximity refers to spatial proximity and thus also the intensity of the experience of the sensual presence of the other person, while interpersonal proximity refers to the emotional connection with the other person. Using a series of examples of life-world interaction, which ultimately boils down to online conversations, the relationship between physical and interpersonal closeness is examined in the course of the article.

Abstract:
The revolution induced by the digital transformation of very small enterprises (VSEs) and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is unprecedented, driven by the rapid emergence of digital technologies. This change goes far beyond mere tool modernization; it brings about a profound shift in how these businesses interact with their economic and social environment. This thesis argues that this transformation constitutes a strategic process that comprehensively and innovatively integrates digital technologies into all aspects of an organization. It delves into how the digital transformation of traditional VSEs/SMEs can act as a catalyst for territorial economic development, analyzing its socio-economic issues and impacts. By combining qualitative and quantitative approaches, it addresses the issue from various angles, including organizational, managerial, and territorial dimensions. Structured around four distinct axes of analysis, this thesis through articles examines the strategic aspect of digital transformation and its role in territorial resilience, the management of externalities generated by this transformation, the evolution of the role of leadership, and the impact of using generative AI in data management and decision-making. Beyond the individual findings of the articles, several cross-cutting conclusions emerge from the research, highlighting the growing importance of digitalization for traditional VSEs/SMEs while underscoring the need for a balanced approach between digital tools and human interactions. By integrating a digital evolution of the theory of strategic construction by the business leader developed by Henry Mintzberg, this thesis puts forward recommendations for leaders and institutions. These recommendations aim to promote digital culture, facilitate collaboration, and provide personalized support for the implementation of digital transformation within businesses. Importantly, this approach, by highlighting a different perception of digitalization and digital transformation within the company, fosters the development of ecosystems in perspective with territorial attractiveness. Finally, this thesis aims to assist economic and institutional actors in successfully navigating the digital era by integrating principles of digital sobriety and environmental responsibility into their strategies, while fostering innovation and competitiveness

Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation that the main objective is to study proximity digital media in Catalonia. The theoretical framework establishes the foundations on which stands the sector: proximity communication and digital journalism (or cyberjournalism). The phenomenon of proximity digital media in Catalonia is analysed through the study of a paradigmatic case, which is the Group Nació Digital (GND). It was chosen for this research because it is considered a success model for the expansion of recent years, audience figures reached and a solvent business model. It has been studied the journalism and business model with a special attention to their territorial editions. Mainly it is used qualitative methodology that includes case of study and in-depth and semi-structured interviews to the management team of the Group and the responsibles for proximity digital media. Moreover a quantitative technique, content analysis, is also used to extend the study. The main conclusion is that the key to success has been the model of proximity information, which allowed the expansion and growth of the audience, and the technology, which is in constant innovation and has an own management system.

Abstract:
The boundaries of the intimate are altered and modified by digital proximity areas where information seems to be transformed. The boundaries between pubic and private areas are shifted. The legibility of the perceptible world tends to loose its sense and its essence. This digital proximity of the network and the terminal interfaces, form of an extension of reality vectorised by the individual’s “desire”, makes it possible to create a mobile intimate identity. The growth of virtual identities and the conditions for digital proximity intersecting with real life express and emphasize a re-invented and re-enchanted daily life. Projection of the intimate into real space endlessly reactivated by the new aspects of intelligent and connecting objects modifies interpretation of and relations with the world. The area then becomes purpose and a framework for creation. The conjunction of art with mediation and information-communication is this form of language that seems capable of interpreting the sensible, imaginative and esthetic universe of this “virtual intimate” period

People are quite good at establishing a social style and using it in different communications contexts, but they do less well when the communication is mediated by computer networks. It is hard to control what information is revealed and how one's digital persona will be presented or interpreted. In this thesis, we ameliorate this problem by creating a "Virtual Private Milieu", a "VPM", that allows networked devices to act on our behalf and project a "digital aura" to other people and devices around us in a manner analogous to the way humans naturally interact with one another. The dynamic aggregation of the different auras and facets that the devices expose to one another creates social spheres of interaction between sets of active devices, and consequently between people. We focus on the subset of networking that deals with proximate communication, which we dub Face-to-Face Networking (FtFN). Network interaction in this space is often analogous to human face-to-face interaction, and increasingly, our devices are being used in local situations. We describe a VPM framework, key features of which include the incorporation of trust and context parameters into the discovery and communication process, incorporation of multiple contextunique identities, and also the support for multiple degrees of security and privacy. We also present the "Social Dashboard", a readily usable control for one's aura. Finally, we review "Comm.unity", a software package that allows developers and researchers easy implementation and deployment of local and distant social applications, and present two applications developed over this platform.

Abstract:
Recent developments in communications technology have transformed how social movements might mobilize, and how they can organize their activities. This thesis explores some of the geographical consequences of the use of digital media for political activism. It does this by focusing on the transnationalization of protests. The aim is to analyse how movements with different organizational structures and political scopes are affected by their use of digital media. This is done with a specific focus on how digital media use influences or enables transnational modes of organization and activism. The thesis comprises four different case studies where each study examines a social movement with a specific organizational structure. There are, however, also important similarities between the movements. In each study, somewhat different perspectives and methodological approaches are used. Some of the methods used are semi-structured interviews, content analysis of written data (retrieved from Facebook as well as Twitter), and social network analysis. The analysis indicates that digital media do have a role in the transnationalization of protest. This role, however, differs depending on what type of social movement one studies. The organizational structure of social movements, together with their specific forms of digital media use, influences how the transnationalization of protests and movements is articulated and formed. In cases where a social movement has a hierarchical organizational structure, there is less transnationalization, whereas in social movements with a more non-hierarchical organizational structure one sees more transnationalization. The thesis concludes that the transnationalization of protests is affected by social movements’ organizational structure. The more decentralized the social movement, the more vibrant the transnational public. In order to explain how transnational social movements, using digital media, can emerge in cases where geographical distances might make such coalitions unlikely, the thesis introduces the notion of affectual proximity. This concept helps us understand how transnational social movements, connecting actors from all over the world, can emerge through digital media.

Abstract:
Since digital media entered the business domain, many different tools and platforms have transformed the nature of business communications. This transformation has not been easy, since the journey has been accompanied by challenges from the marketers’ side against the adoption of the new platforms into the firm’s communication channels. Business to business marketers have also been engaged in such challenges by maintaining a slow adoption, which has motivated the researchers to study the adoption of different means and tools of digital communication in a business context. Through this research, I contribute by exploring the adoption strategies of digital platforms in the B2B supply chain including B2B firms, retailers and end users. By digital media, I mainly refer to social media and beacon technology. First, I begin this thesis by identifying the adoption and integration strategies of social media and digital marketing into traditional marketing channels in a B2B context. In this part, I identify the B2B firms’ target audience and propose a model facilitating a B2B firm’s practical social media adoption strategies. Second, to explore the benefits of different social media content sharing approaches derived from information accessibility resulted in the prior study of this thesis, I introduce and examine Public and Gated-Content sharing approaches. Thereafter, assisted by Social Power Theory and Resource Dependence Theory, I examine the effect of Public and Gated-Content sharing approaches on the target audience’s willingness to interact with the firm. The findings of this study reveal that Gated-Content approach can help the firms build closer relationship with the target audience and engage them in a co-creation process. Third, by studying proximity marketing through the adoption of beacon technology in the retail context, I explore the current methods of usage, as well as the benefits and challenges of in-store proximity marketing adoption for content sharing purposes. I complete the thesis by presenting the different challenges of such adoption, which consist technical, human behavior, managerial perception, resource and privacy factors. Finally, I identify the need to integrate the physical aspect of place and location back again into the online digital communication channels within a retail context.

Abstract:
The uses of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are growing and diversifyingin all parts of the society. In organizations, this phenomenon, known as digital transformation, materializes in particular by a permanent questioning of their processes and requires a continualadaptation of the skills of organizational actors. The banking sector is characterized by urgency, immediacy and the multiplication of solicitations favored by ICT, corresponding to thecharacteristics of hypermodernity. This research contributes to the exploration, in the field, ofa little studied phenomenon: the skills of local managers, a pivotal organizational function indirect contact with employees, top management and customers. The skills development of theseactors is particularly marked by the uses of ICTs, and more generally, by the hypermoderncontext. In order to explore this problematic, we mobilize theories relating to classical skillsand related to the uses of ICT as well as the structural duality of the structuration theory(Giddens, 1987) allowing the study of complex interrelationships between structures, actorsand their practices. An exploratory approach deploying a qualitative methodology, concretized by abductive actionresearch, was carried out through the study of the case of Banque Populaire du Sud, regionalmutual bank. A multi-stakeholder approach in the context of this immersive study enabled thetriangulation of 165 open interviews, 32 hours of observations and 20 semi-structuredinterviews with local managers. This methodology results in the emergence of 6 different typologies of skills that local managersimplement, through 49 skills. The discussion highlighted not only the importance of ICT in aconstantly changing environment but also the coexistence of hypermodern characteristics withothers, advocating on the contrary the slowdown, related to slow management. The skillsdetected as well as situations deemed critical by the proximity managers met led to thedevelopment of 31 applicable managerial recommendations

Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to investigate therapists' experience of therapeutic alliance in therapy through digital format. A qualitative method has been applied and data collection has been done through semi-structured interviews. The study involved seven participants, five of whom were women and two were men. The study's collected material has been analyzed based on Braun and Clarke's (2006) Thematic analysis. The Thematic Analysis generated three themes: The first theme: The uncertainty in what happens, and what one does not see or hear, which describes the participants' experience of obstacles in communication through the digital meeting. Second theme: Limited room for maneuver, describes the participants' feeling that the digital format reduces their toolbox as a therapist. The last theme: Lack of physical proximity, describes how the participants lack the physical proximity in the digital format but experience the digital format as a good complement to the physical space, however, no adequate replacement.

Abstract:
Interventional pain management techniques are invaluable in the treatment of pain from various etiologies. Routine and advanced interventional pain management needle placement is essential not only to guarantee success with intended pain-relieving procedures, but also to minimize known complications from these same procedures. Knowledge of relevant anatomy is crucial. The focus of this chapter is to provide a brief description of various interventional pain management injection techniques. A short summary of the relevant anatomy, landmarks used for needle placement and important safety considerations is provided along with a selection of digital and radiographic photographs depicting the ideal needle placement and contrast flow at or in the immediate proximity of the targeted structures.

Abstract:
AbstractOne of the key issues in human-machine collaboration is human safety. Safe human-robot interaction can be implemented using an electronic skin (e-skin) that detects the human’s proximity to the collaborative robot (cobot) casing even before the collision with the machine. The detection delay of such a situation should be as small as possible to be able to stop the machine safely. This paper presents an analysis of the results of estimating the proximity of a human to a robot with an electronic skin placed on its surface. The proximity estimation system works by measuring the capacitance of an open capacitor, and the placement of the capacitor on the conductive robot case significantly affects system performance. This paper outlines which parameters have the most important influence on this performance.

Abstract:
AbstractReading across the contributions of this book, this comment argues for a “Caring for big data” in critical proximity with the tools and techniques of data scientific practices. Contrary to a critically distant position, caring for big data in critical proximity is to practice it differently. It raises the question of how tools for data harvest, analysis, and visualization should be designed if the task was taken on from inside digital migration studies.

Abstract:
Even before the corona pandemic broke out in 2020, the role of digitalisation became more and more apparent within Knowledge and Technology Transfer (KTT) processes. Since the pandemic, intermediary organisations that bridge the distance between academia and the world of business to pave the way for successful university-industry linkages have not primarily been able to build on face-to-face-encounters to create those relations. Based on an ongoing research project, this paper examines how digitally mediated communications potentially enhance or limit knowledge and technology transfer that is primarily based on face-to-face interactions. On the one hand, the use of digitally mediated communications seem to foster the spatial expansion of networks, save travel times and costs and foster a special form of social inclusion. University-industry-relations, on the other hand, still rely on a positive evaluation of face-to-face contacts and geographical proximity for trust to develop between heterogeneous partners. Here, actors with bridging functions like transfer scouts are vital in enabling a regular communicative exchange to create commitment, social cohesion and cooperation in digital contexts. Although the relevance of digitalised transfer processes has been increasing over time, an important set of activities, involving face-to-face contacts and co-location, currently still plays a major role for transfer intermediaries in university-industry-relations.

Abstract:
Global manufacturing industries and supply chains have been hit by a number of turbulences, some of which will also have an impact on the site selection of FDI projects. Rising geopolitical tensions, recurring lockdowns due to the COVID-pandemic, turmoil in maritime logistics, or the global semiconductor shortage all increase the necessity of reshoring and in-house manufacturing, although relocating production to the homeland is facing serious headwinds in many cases. Experience shows that most multinational companies are considering different scenarios of decentralising production, through which they are seeking a balance of scale, proximity of markets, and flexibility. Overall, the main task of countries competing for FDI remains unchanged: securing attractive conditions and a supportive environment for corporate value creation in the long run. Beyond the current spectacular turbulences of supply chains, the future of the manufacturing industries and the site selection of the related FDI projects will mostly be determined by the rollout of Industry 4.0 and the digital transformation, and this is what national investment promotion must prepare for.

Abstract:
Geelong and the Surf Coast are treated here as one entity although there are marked differences between the two communities. Sitting on the home of the Wathaurong Aboriginal group, this G21 region is geographically diverse. Geelong serviced a wool industry on its western plains, while manufacturing and its seaport past has left it as a post-industrial city. The Surf Coast has benefitted from the sea change phenomenon. Both communities have fast growing populations and have benefitted from their proximity to Melbourne. They are deeply integrated with this major urban centre. The early establishment of digital infrastructure proved an advantage to certain sectors. All creative industries are represented well in Geelong while many creatives in Torquay are embedded in the high profile and economically dominant surfing industry. The Geelong community is serviced well by its own creative industries with well-established advertising firms, architects, bookshops, gaming arcades, movie houses, music venues, newspaper headquarters, brand new and iconic performing and visual arts centres, libraries and museums, television and radio all accessible in its refurbished downtown area. Co-working spaces, collective practices and entrepreneurial activity are evident throughout the region.
