Full textOur research purposes to reconstruct the debate on the methodus cartesiana that took place in the Netherlands in the period relevant to the early diffusion of Cartesianism. Among the mainly discussed questions between Cartesians and anti-Cartesians there was one relevant to the method followed by Descartes. The rejection of the traditional logic that is present in the Discours de la méthode seemed to give rise to an "epistemological gap" that could not be filled up, and Descartes' early opponents emphasized the lack of a formal instrument that could be able to prove the theses backed up in the Discours de la méthode or in the Meditationes de prima philosophia. The first publication directed against the Cartesian philosophy (Martin Schoock's Admiranda methodus of 1643) questions the methodus Cartesii and the Cartesian refusal of the logic. This criticism is also present in the works published by Jacobus Revius and Ciriacus Lentulus between 1648 and 1654. After Descartes' death (1650) the Dutch Cartesians were forced to prove that one could "reconstruct" both the method and the logic utilized by Descartes. Among those who intervened in this debate there were Johann Clauberg (Defensio cartesiana), Daniel Lipstorp (Specimina philosophiae cartesianae) and Tobias Andreae (Assertio methodi cartesianae, 1653-1654). The study of the methodus cartesiana led us both to reconstruct the genesis and the articulation of the discussion on Descartes' method, and to show the inner developments of Cartesianism that match to this discussion. The chronological limits of the research are on the one hand the publication of Schoock's Admiranda methodus (1643), on the other Clauberg's death (1665)

Full text"Iconic" society par excellence, the United Provinces in the seventeenth century is a place where images play a tremendous role in daily life. Meanwhile, marriage is an institution at the heart of a rehabilitation process and of a differentiation process of confessional identities involving dogmatic and disciplinary provisions. It is also a fundamental anthropological experience, experienced by everybody in the society, be it as actor or spectator. In this perspective, the matrimonial images pervade the whole visual culture of Dutch society and are at the crossroads of social, religious and political issues, at different scales, through the symbolics they involve and the social uses they are submitted to. How are confessional differences articulated to them? How are social distinctions manifested? What symbolic benefits do social actors get out of visual metaphors of marriage? Finally, how do these images interact with the reader-viewer? Through a diverse corpus of sources (illustrated books or pamphlets, single-leaf engravings, but also paintings and medals), the thesis addresses these questions by examining successively how images accompany prescriptive discourses on marriage, how they are involved in the urban elites weddings and during wedding festivities for princes, but also how they can metaphorically embody the link between the believer and God, or, paradoxically, that between the Prince of Orange and the Fatherland, in a political system claimed to be a Republic

Full textIn the 18th century, French wine-trade to the Dutch Republic underwent radical restructuring. This process is at the centre of this study. To start with, the quantitative development and geographical aspects of trade are highlighted. The volume of trade decreased. On the Dutch market, red wines substituted whites and a growing interest existed in old wines and producer brands. The market share of wines from the hinterland of Nantes and from the “Poitou” diminished, whereas the Languedoc, the Provence and the Rhône valley improved their share. The import was more and more concentrated in Amsterdarn. The second and third parts of this study are devoted to the organisation of the market and its institutions : the standards and forma! as well as unwritten rules that directed its functioning. The development of three institutions receives detailed attention: the Amsterdam wine auctions, provincial excise on wines in Holland and fmally, standards and regulation on the quality of wines

Full textNowadays, when you think about Voltaire, you think about his “Tales”. Who does not know Candide or Zadig? However, in the XVIIIth century, he was famous and wanted to be celebrated for his theater. A few specialists already studied the reception of his theater in France. But what happened outside France? It seems that Voltaire as a dramatist was very appreciated in the Europe of the Enlightment. He is in the “United Provinces”, today the Netherlands, seen as the main figure of Classicism. Moreover, some aspects of his plays were found of particular interest: the exoticism of some of them, and specifically the patriotism often intensified in the translations. We talk about his tragedies like Zaïre, the best known, but we forget his comedies most of the time. However, the public who loved them have been in a country, where despite the critics, the French culture has kept her Glory

Marquaille, Léonie. "Peindre pour les milieux catholiques dans les Pays-Bas du Nord au XVIIe siècle." Thesis, Paris 10, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA100126.
Full textThis research intends to be part of the Dutch art historiography’s renewal. The traditional opposition between North and South, Calvinism and Catholicism, History painting and Genre painting is no longer relevant. Although the Reformed church was the public church, the choice of personal religion permitted « sects », like Catholicism, Anabaptism, Lutheranism, to remain active. The presence of Catholics in the calvinist Dutch Republic during the 17th century maintains a demand for paintings : religious art works for churches or private devotion, portraits of the clergy or catholic lay, allegory of the catholic faith. I considered not only the expectations of Catholics in terms of painting, but also the responses of the painters whether they were Catholic or not. My aim is to extend the knowlegde of the production and reception of paintings during the age of the Counter-Reformation in an uncommon political and geographic situation
