Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The first argument set out in 1877 by the Parisian astronomer Charles André, founder of the Observatoire de Lyon, to justify the establishment of an astronomical institute in Saint-Genis-Laval was the fact that it offered the opportunity to install remote marks along its meridian. André had used this argument three years before to reject another site selected by a local committee. However, at that time remote meridian marks had been abandoned by most astronomers in favour of close ones. We have conducted field research to discover the remains of these marks, as well as to seek evidence – both in the literature and in archives – of their use. This investigation shows that the argument for remote marks was in fact driven by geodetic considerations. The choice of Saint-Genis-Laval was actually made by geodesists of the Dépôt Général de la Guerre and its director, François Perrier, who wanted to institute new observatories in Province as key points in the primary geodetic network of France.

Abstract:
At the Cheever Mine, located in the eastern Adirondack Mountains of the Mesoproterozoic Grenville Province, iron oxide-apatite ore forms a narrow (<3 m) sheet cross-cutting metasomatically altered, magnetite-bearing, albite-rich leucogranitic host rocks of the Lyon Mountain Granite suite. Zircon from the ore and five samples of country rock were dated by Laser Ablation-Multi-Collector-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry. The ore yielded a Concordia age of 1033.6 ± 2.9 Ma while three samples of host rock yielded ages of 1036.3 ± 2.9, 1040 ± 11, and 1043.9 ± 4.1 Ma. Two additional samples of host rock yielded older ages of 1059.6 ± 3.4 and 1066.0 ± 6.3 Ma and contain zircon xenocrystic cores with 207Pb/206Pb ages up to 1242 Ma. The zircons analyzed, including those separated from the ore, have characteristics typically associated with an igneous origin including size, shape, inclusions, oscillatory zoning, typical chondrite-normalized REE patterns, U contents, and U/Th ratios. This data establishes the age of the ore and alteration and a temporal, and likely genetic, connection between the ore and members of the Lyon Mountain Granite suite. A model invoking melting of Shawinigan country rocks, magmatic differentiation, and long-lived magmatic and metasomatic input along extensional fault conduits is proposed for the ore’s genesis. At the Cheever Mine, magmatic hydrothermal fluids and/or post-intrusion alteration appears not to have had a major impact on zircon, which preserves original U-Pb systematics.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this article, we explore the life of Daniel Eset, a character from a novel called "The Little Thing" by the French writer Alphonse Doude. The focus is on his psychological life, as we conclude that he does not have any specific goals in life by having a weak personality. This problem is the result of several elements that we will raise through this work. The family in the novel witnesses extreme doom at the moment of baby Daniel's birth. Where the family falls into a state of great grief, including: a loss in trade, the outbreak of many fires in the factory, and other calamities that befell the family when this child arrived. These events led them to sell their house and leave the city in the province of Languedoc to reach the city of Lyon. The birth of that boy brought them many misfortunes. This young man is forced to leave the world of childhood to earn a living and face the hardships of life. Unfortunately, the curse haunts the little boy. He cannot become a mature man at the age of childhood. He does not have enough experience to face the difficulties of life. And because he didn't get enough education and enough affection to be a mature adult man.

Analysed in all their aspects (moving conditions, organization, recruiting, mission, spirituality. . . ) the recollets, through the exemple of the province of lyon, prove to be an essential order to understand the important part played by the regulars in the church of the catholic reformation. Their specificity was to combine mental praying, poverty, and active apostolate oriented towards the populations so as to give them a feeling of security. They fitted exactly the expectations of the society until about 1680. Nevertheless, they came up against two major obstacles: -the greater dynamism of the other franciscans: the capucians-the difficulty in adapting their message in eighteenth century, which provoked then a lack of interest for the part of the elites with regard to them

Abstract:
The bibliophilic circles, which were founded during the nineteenth century, can be divided into two main categories : some of them were above all learned societies, which devoted themselves to publish scholarly works and mainly historical documents or to reprint rare books ; others devoted themselves to publish luxuriously works of classical or contemporary literature. The members of each category wanted to create books without depending on professional publishers. Founded in Lyon in 1885, the Société des Bibliophiles lyonnais belonged to the first category. From its formation to 1914, thirty seven gentlemen, who were scholars and book collectors, came together in this club. They published twenty nine works, which represented very well the productions of the historical learned societies and they were interested particularly in the book as an object, so in its history and in the retrospective bibliography. Their publications, which were luxurious and conventional books, had besides to contribute to the aesthetic revival of Lyon's printing and to leave a mark in the bibliophilic history. But the most important aspect of the activities of the bibliophilic learned societies during the nineteenth century was effectively the part which they played in the development of the researches in the field of the history of the book

Abstract:
This study is concerned with /ɔ/-fronting, a phenomenon widely studied in France, but that has received little attention in Quebec French. To better understand the regional variation of /ɔ/-fronting and to further investigate its relationship with the consonantal environment, a contrastive acoustic analysis of the first three formants of 3835 stressed vowels uttered in (C)VC monosyllabic word and pseudo-words by university students from Saguenay and Québec (Quebec) and Lyon (France) was conducted. Linear mixed effects regressions fitted to the data show substantial variation in F₂ across cities, /ɔ/ being more fronted in Québec than in Saguenay and in Lyon than in Saguenay. F₁ and F₃ also vary between France and Quebec French. In all cases, no matter their position (before or after the vowel), front consonants (ex. /t, d/) favor the highest F₂, while labial consonants (ex. /p, b/) are associated with the lowest F₂. These results suggest that /ɔ/-fronting, at the acoustical level, is alive and well among young Quebec French speakers and that it is variable both at the micro- and macro-geographical levels, while also being largely affected by coarticulation across all speakers.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
What is the importance of the spatial dimension of social life when the economy is globalizing, education systems are internationalizing and mobility is becoming a social value? To answer this question we looked at the foreign student as an analyser figure of the current transformations. The research relies on 80 biographical stories of young people originating from France and Quebec and was performed using a comparative approach. The selection criteria used for the sample were that they had done at least one student exchange in the late 90's and that they were working or looking for work in their society of origin when interviewed. The research carries on three objectives. The first consists of analyzing the relationship between work integration and how the individual relates to space when mobility becomes a social norm. Our task is to identify and define the conditions of appropriation of international space by individuals, in the process of professional socialization. The second objective aims to study the modes of interaction, the oppositions and the negociations between individual actors and social structures throughout their academic and professional despatialized paths. Specifically, we analyse each phase of the spatial and professional carreers, the concept of carreer allowing us to articulate the subjective (expectations, representations) and objective (opportunities and constraints) dimensions of biographical itineraries. Finally, the third objective is to understand carreers in light of the structural conditions of both the societies taken into consideration. The comparative approach has the advantage of exposing the societal stuctures involved in the social construction of the international mobility and professional socialization phenomenons

Abstract:
A comparative study between French and Quebec Law reveals that under French Law, less importance is given to the protection of the child than to his rights. Apart from specific procedures such as youth protection or penal procedures, access to justice for minors is still limited. The minor may only address the tribunal individually in exceptional circumstances. The right to be heard, recognized under the January 8th, 1993 Act, is still not applied properly. Quebec Law has found a balance between the protection a child needs and the exercice of his rights. The diversity of the systems developed under Quebec Law enables the child's access to the tribunal while preserving his interests

Abstract:
Abstract Information on the origins of those who died was included in many epitaphs, and this can be used, albeit imperfectly, to study physical mobility in the Roman empire. These details might reveal the voting district in which the person was registered, the city or province of origin, or, in the case of non-citizens, the ethnic origin and tribal affiliation of the deceased. A legionary soldier, for example, from Calagurris in northern Spain might end up being posted in Nijmegen on the German frontier, giving us insight into the movement of someone who chose to pursue a military career. A merchant from Syria might follow his business interests and end up residing in Gaul on the Saone river, dealing in goods from Lyon and Aquitania.

Abstract:
In Europe, concerns regarding urban planning have evolved notably: rural areas are now recognized as a field of values and structures that planning culture wishes to bring to front. This paper examines the evolution of common meanings, terms and tools referring rural land in Catalonia, France and Italy’s Regional Planning. The approach resumes a century’s overview on rural land treatment and compares instruments used in three study cases: metropolitan region of Barcelona, urban agglomeration of Lyon and the province of Bologna, regions with a long planning tradition, often considered as exemplary.

Abstract:
Agglomeration economies are transforming the map of distribution of employment in the metropolitan areas and are affecting the changes in urban structures. One of the clearest effects is the positive impact on productivity of firms that seek to locate in a specific place as a competitive tool for the productive processes, interact with the processes of regional development. These phenomena are studied in the Province of Barcelona for the period 1991-2001, studying the economic sectors in knowledge-intensive sectors defined by the OECD as high-tech industries and high-knowledge services for its intrinsic relation with the existence of economies agglomeration, in addition to the textile industry, an activity that has historically characterized the economic development of this Region. The study was conducted in two stages: the first examines the transformation of the employment market in the sectors and the period defined above, from the information workplace located (LTL) by municipality, the censuses of 1991 and 2001 the National Statistics Institute (INE). In the second stage has been an analysis of key factors arising from the fields of public planning which led to the consolidation of these sectors. That is why, through personal interviews in depth technical and business economic development of some of these municipalities have been detected and analyzed those policies, instruments and / or measures that have been implemented at the initiative of their own supra-municipal entities and organizations with the aim of strengthening this process. The results suggest that there has indeed been significant progress in the growth of economic activity in the sectors studied in the Province, and that this growth response in some of the cases to local economic promotion policies developed by governments. This paper is presented as part of the results obtained in the project CAEE The Case for Agglomeration Economies in Europe Targeted Analysis 2013/2/1 ESPON 2013. Abstract:
Detection of nonsolar planets is a challenging problem. Due to the planets' faintness relative to the star, it is necessary to suppress the stellar diffracted energy to very low levels. In addition, the planets' proximity to the star requires large diameter optics. This research examines various multiaperture and segmented telescopic systems incorporating Lyot coronagraphs to suppress the stellar diffracted energy and provide the required resolution so that the extrasolar planets can be directly imaged. Because of the phasing tolerances and required contrast ratios, the IR band of 10.5-13.5 µm was examined over a field of view of 0.2-2 arcsec. Various telescopic objectives with the Lyot coronagraph were examined for their ability to suppress the stellar diffracted energy levels. The designs examined were comprised of segmented circular, hexagonal, apodized hexagonal, and rectangular systems. The Lyot coronagraph consists of a Gaussian apodizer at the focal plane of the objective and a Lyot stop at the image plane of the objective.

Abstract:
In this paper, wall-resolved LES computations for a compressor cascade from Ecole Centrale de Lyon [1] are presented. A computational grid containing about 600 million computational cells was used in these simulations. This grid resolves the details of tripping strips used in the experiments, located near the leading edge of the blade on both suction and pressure sides. Endwall turbulent boundary layer at cascade inlet was measured to be at a momentum thickness based Reynolds number of about 7000 to 8000, with quite a bit of variation in the pitchwise direction. In order to avoid the cost of simulating the entire duct upstream of the cascade, and any auxiliary flat plate boundary layer simulations, the inlet fluctuations for LES computations were generated using digital filtering method for synthetic turbulence generation [27]. Turbulence statistics from a database of high fidelity eddy simulations of flat plate boundary layers (at similar Reynolds numbers) from KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm [28] were used to fully define the properties of the cascade inlet boundary layer. In this paper, time-averaged results from three LES computations for this configuration are presented — one with no inlet fluctuations at the cascade endwall at the domain inlet, and then two computations with inlet fluctuations and boundary layers at Reθ of 7000 and 8183. These provide a sensitivity of LES predictions of corner separation in the cascade to the boundary layer thickness at cascade inlet. A comparison of these simulations with prior DDES (and RANS) simulations from UTRC [26], as well as existing LES results from Ecole Centrale de Lyon [12], allows to further the understanding of critical elements of the endwall flow physics. More specifically, it provides more insight into which phenomena need to be sufficiently resolved (e.g. horseshoe vortex) in order to capture both the average behavior of the corner separation, as well as its unsteady dynamics. In addition, it provides new information which will help define best practice guidelines for the use of eddy simulations to resolve endwall features in compressors at off-design conditions.

A test cell correlation program was carried out by the General Electric Company (GE) to establish a relationship between the performance of a designated F404 gas turbine engine in the National Research Council of Canada (NRCC) test cell No.5 and the GE test cell 108 at Lynn, Massachusetts. General Electric reported on the test results and provided a test cell correlation method. The test data and methods have been subsequently analyzed. Simplified methods were examined to provide ready means of correlating other test facilities. Two correlation methods are proposed which compare well with the manufacturer’s results.

Abstract:
Abstract A composite fan stage representative of a modern Ultra High Bypass Ratio (UHBR) architecture has been investigated experimentally on a novel test facility at Ecole Centrale de Lyon. For these experiments, a turbulence control screen (TCS), a hemisphere, consisting of honeycomb and wiremesh panels, was installed in front of the rig in order to ensure homogeneous, disturbance-free inflow conditions. This kind of screen was developed in the early 1970 years to investigate flight-noise on static test beds. Today, they are commonly used in aero-engine and fan tests, because they improve the accuracy of acoustic measurements and provide more reproducible performance tests. However, the influence of such screens has been investigated only from an acoustic point of view in the past. This study presents a back-to-back comparison of measurements with and without the TCS, which allows a characterization of the effects on aerodynamic and aeroelastic behavior of the fan stage. The investigation was carried out for multiple stable operating points on two different speed lines to obtain a global image of the influence at part and design speed. The utilization of steady and unsteady instrumentation in different axial and circumferential duct positions allows a detailed analysis of similarities and differences of the configuration without and with the TCS and provides insight into underlying physical mechanisms.

Full text
Abstract:
With improvements in super-polished mirror technology, coronagraphs can be designed based on mirror objectives. Reflecting coronagraphs provide superior performance capabilities compared with classical singlet-lens-objective Lyot coronagraphs. Specifically, an all-reflecting design has the advantage of full achromaticity; wavelength coverage is limited only by atmospheric spectral transmittance, mirror reflectance, and detector response, and simple heat-flux rejection is inherent in the design. Further, large-aperture systems can be designed to be capable of producing high-angular-resolution imaging. A program to develop reflecting coronagraphs at NSO/SP is described, including the construction of two prototype instruments, of 5-cm and 15-cm apertures, respectively. In particular, applications in the infrared are emphasized; since strong spectral lines are available, the sky brightness is reduced, as are the scattering properties of super-polished surfaces. The advantages of some designs for certain nighttime applications, using either ground- or space-based systems, are discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract Research of the past decades has shown that the operating range of modern fans and compressors is often limited by aeroelastic phenomena before the onset of pure aerodynamic instability. Prediction of these mechanisms is challenging for state-of-the-art numerical methods, particularly for configurations with flexible wide-chord blades. To provide a benchmark configuration for the community, the composite-material fan stage ECL5, representative of near future Ultra-High-Bypass Ratio architectures has been designed at Ecole Centrale de Lyon and recently shared as an open-test-case. In research program CATANA, different configurations with variable tuning and intake geometries are investigated experimentally, and here we present a comprehensive aeroelastic study of the tuned reference configuration. The study encompasses the investigation of the whole subsonic and transonic operating range using multi-physical instrumentation. A characterization of structural properties under running conditions is analyzed in comparison to individual blade measurements and FEM-predictions. The stability limit is investigated at different speedlines. At transonic conditions, rotating stall occurred without aeroelastic precursors. Severe non-synchronous-vibrations were observed at subsonic speeds and limited the operating range before the onset of rotating stall. Through a detailed analysis of the aeroelastic coupling mechanism, a full characterization of interacting modes is presented. The challenging prediction of this coupled phenomenon and the discrepancy to aeroelastic simulations are discussed. This paper is accompanied by a detailed aerodynamic study, and together a complete dataset including measurements of aerodynamic performance, radial flow profiles, blade-individual tip-clearance, stagger angle, vibration amplitudes and unsteady pressure fields at the rotor tip are provided. The results are a promising benchmark for future method development, particularly involving high-fidelity methods.

Abstract:
Over the last decades, fast response aerodynamic probes have been recognized as a robust measurement technique to provide time-resolved flow field data in turbomachinery environments. Still, most of the existing probe designs are restricted to low temperature applications (< 120 °C) either because of sensor temperature range limitations or packaging issues. Measurements in turbomachines also require a small probe size often with a very high bandwidth which are conflictual constraints difficult to satisfy simultaneously. This contribution therefore presents the development of a novel miniature (O̸ 2.5 mm) high temperature single sensor total pressure probe, designed for operation up to 250 °C with a very high bandwidth of 250 kHz. The probe main element is a 1.7 mm diameter commercial piezoresistive transducer placed in a Pitot type arrangement with a flush mounted sensor to provide the highest bandwidth. The details of the probe design are presented as well as the probe calibrations in pressure and in temperature. The effects of using a thermal compensation module or a sense resistor to monitor the temperature drift are described in the context of measurement uncertainty. The probes were characterized in terms of aerodynamic characteristics versus flow angle and Mach number. Shock tube tests have shown a dynamic response of the probe with sensor resonance frequencies well over 300 kHz, with a flat frequency range up to 250 kHz. Two probe prototypes were manufactured and first used in the 3 1/2-stage high speed axial compressor CREATE of the LMFA at E´cole Centrale de Lyon in France. The probes were traversed at each inter blade row plane up to temperatures of 180 °C and absolute pressure of 3 bar. The probe was able to resolve the high blade passing frequencies (∼16 kHz) and several harmonics including rotor-stator interaction frequencies up to 200 kHz. Besides the average total pressure distributions from the radial traverses, phase-locked averages and random unsteadiness are presented. The probe spatial and temporal resolutions are discussed in the context of those results.
