Abstract:
The development by ruminants of strong conditioned flavour aversions (CFAs) to foods associated with the administration of LiCl (an artificial toxin) has demonstrated their potential to avoid feeds that cause negative postingestive consequences (Provenza, 1995). Weaker CFAs are formed when they ingest foods with the detrimental secondary plant compound, oxalic acid (Kyriazakis et al. 1997). Moreover, animals may exhibit conditioned preferences (CFPs) for foods supplying appropriate amounts of nutrients such as nitrogen (Provenza, 1995). In this study we tested whether a continuum exists in the formation of CFAs and CFPs to foods that are associated with increasing availability of sulphur (S) in crossbred ewes.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this paper we respond to the criticisms of Provenza et al. (1998) that our framework of learning and feeding motivation (Day et al. 1998) resorts to higher order goals, which cannot be falsified by experimentation. We assert that in order to be able to predict the feeding behaviour of animals we first need to understand what they are trying to achieve (i.e. invoke teleonomy). We then detail our framework in such terms that one could envisage experiments that could quantitatively test its predictions. We contend that the framework of ‘the self-organization of behaviour’ proposed by Provenza et al. (1998) cannot lead to such quantitative predictions, since it is invoked to describe feeding behaviour of animals a posteriori. It is our own desire, by contrast, to assess feeding behaviour a priori, which leads us to propose and defend our framework of learning and feeding motivation.

Abstract:
There is a widening consensus around the fact that, in many developed countries, food production-consumption patterns are in recent years interested by a process of deep change towards diversification and re-localisation practices, as a counter-tendency to the trend to the increasing disconnection between farming and food, producers and consumers. The relevance of these initiatives doesn't certainly lie on their economic dimension, but rather in their intense diffusion and growth rate, their spontaneous and autonomous nature and, especially, their intrinsic innovative potential. These dynamics involve a wide range of actors around local food patterns, embedding short food supply chains initiatives within a more complex and wider process of rural development, based on principles of sustainability, multifunctionality and valorisation of endogenous resources. In this work we have been analysing these features through a multi-level perspective, with reference to the dynamics between niche and regime and the inherent characteristics of the innovation paths. We apply this approach, through a qualitative methodology, to the analysis of the experience of farmers’ markets and Solidarity-Based Consumers Groups (Gruppi di Acquisto Solidale) ongoing in Tuscany, seeking to highlight the dynamics that are affecting the establishment of this alternative food production-consumption model (and its related innovative potential) from within and from without. To verify if and in which conditions they can constitute a niche, a protected space where radical innovations can develop, we make reference to the three interrelated analytic dimensions of socio-technical systems: the actors (i.e. individuals. social groups, organisations), the rules and institutions system, and the artefacts (i.e. the material and immaterial contexts in which the actors move). Through it, we analyse the innovative potential of niches and the level of their structuration and , then, the mechanisms of system transition, focusing on the new dynamics within the niche and between the niche and the policy regime emerging after the growth of interest by mass-media and public institutions and their direct involvement in the initiatives. Following the development of these significant experiences, we explore more deeply social, economic, cultural, political and organisational factors affecting innovations in face-to-face interactions, underpinning the critical aspects (sharing of alternative values, coherence at individual choices level, frictions on organisational aspects, inclusion/exclusion, attitudes towards integration at territorial level), towards uncovering until to the emergence of tensions and the risks of opportunistic behaviours that might arise from their growth. Finally, a comparison with similar experiences abroad is drawn (specifically with Provence), in order to detect food for thought, potentially useful for leading regional initiativestowards transition path.

Abstract:
This work aims to reconstruct the genesis and the evolution of the frontier between Liguria and Provence and its impact on local societies. The specific area of research is the Nervia Valley: the only, among the valleys of western Liguria and the region of Nice, to have constituted for more than five centuries (1262-1796) a frontier between two countries often in conflict, the Republic of Genoa in the east and Angevin Provence (later Savoy) in the west. Based on a thousand documents preserved at the archives of three European states (France, Italy and Monaco), the study firstly highlights both the economic and strategic importance of the Nervia Valley; the road network, economic and settlement policies pursued in this area by Genoa, Provence and the House of Savoy; the complex relations between Lords and communities. The second part of the work investigates the local societies in the Sixteenth century. Special attention is devoted to the Doria of Dolceacqua and to their role in the industrial development of the territory as wine, olive oil and paper entrepreneurs; to the diffusion of the ideas fostered by the Reformation in the villages governed by the duke of Savoy; and to the post-Tridentine Catholic renewal. The final part tries to assess to what degree the presence of a frontier influenced the life and daily activities of the inhabitants

Abstract:
It seems necessary to reconsider the kind of relationship the troubadours established with the kingdom of Navarre. For years the experts have minimized the existence of these ties, showing no interest in analyzing the absence of Navarre. This study aims to reassess the presence of the Pyrenean crown in the Occitan poetry of the troubadours. The starting point is a new screening of the corpus preserved. Afterwards, new and detailed readings of the chosen texts take place. This helps to renovate the list of allusions to Navarre known until today. At the same time, we make a thorough examination of the social, historical and cultural conditions surrounding these allusions. Therefore, it’s indispensable to contextualize, to date and to justify the selected poems. A formal philological analysis completes this socio-historical approach, for it allows us to better understand the text reception. Conclusion: Navarre is present in the lyric of the troubadours. It may not be a remarkable presence, but more than fifty texts are linked to the Navarrese court. The texts remark facts and events related to its History and Politics, with special appraisingly references to Sancho VI and not so appraisingly to his son Sancho VII. They applaud the existence of moral and courtly values in the kingdom, and they criticize its absence -chiefly largesse. They take into account different aspects of its religion, and are testimony of the importance that the pilgrimage to Santiago gained. They describe the most interesting features of its geography and its people, etcetera. In fact, the presence of Navarre in the troubadour literature is not passive. The court of the king and those of his lords acted as patrons of the troubadours. What’s more, a circle of poets and protectors developed around Navarre. The Haro, Cameros, Azagra, Ladrón families and others were part of this circle, all of them interested in the Occitan and Galician poetry. Now we can correct all previous assessments. We have to introduce in a definite way the forgotten crown of Navarre in the rayonnement that achieved the lyric of the Occitan troubadours during the XII and XIII century.

McCrea, Patrick Sean. "Grand Illusions; Elusive Facts| The Survival of Regional Languages in France Despite 'Their Programmed Demise'| Picard in Picardy and Provencal in Provence." Thesis, Tulane University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10608347.

Full text
Abstract:

This dissertation studies the survival, or resistance, of regional languages in France through the use of two case studies: Picard in Picardy and Provençal in Provence. In order to create the French nation, the revolutionaries of 1789 decided upon the necessity of political unity. In order to facilitate, or to create, this unity, the cultural provinces were abolished and generic départements were created in their stead. However, when political unity did not occur immediately after the territorial change, the revolutionaries determined that national unity, both political and cultural, would be attained through the imposition of the French language. It was thus language that was deemed to be the greatest separating factor of the French at this period. In 1794, Abbé Grégoire called for the “programmed demise” of the regional languages through education in and of French. While this program was not officially enacted until the Third Republic (1870–1914), due to numerous factors, these languages were supposed to have died long ago. While their numbers of speakers have decreased, and there are no longer any monolingual regional language speakers, they still exist. How is this fact possible? Despite explanations attributed to enduring diglossia, the extended process of language shift or time itself, this study focuses on regional identity and posits that the durable bond between regional identity and language is the explanation.

Abstract:
The lithic industry from the Late Neolithic of Provence stays quite imperceptible if studied by a classic technique and typology approach. Its caracteristics, a dichotomy represented by standardized long blade productions coming from specialized workshops on one hand, and a technically simplified domestic production of wich standards aren't easy to find on the other, need a higher resolution improvement in the observations that are made. Those ones, then of a petrographical and traceological nature, allow a better understanding of the operating chains as well as to identify the tools they are destinated to produce. It then is possible to propose a more adapted typology and to show the existing standards. The comparison of the lithic industries of three complementary occupations illustrates the advantages of the methodology developped in this work and suggests, at last, a sketch of the caracteristics of the lithic industry from this period

Full text
Abstract:
Plasma gasification is an efficient and environmentally responsible form of thermal treatment of wastes. In the plasma gasification process, extremely high temperature gases are used to break down the molecular structure of complex carboncontaining materials — such as municipal solid waste (MSW), tires, hazardous waste and sewage sludge — and convert them into synthesis gas (syngas) containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide that can be used to generate power or other sustainable sources of energy. Gasification occurs in an oxygen starved environment so the waste is gasified, not incinerated.

Gentry, William, and Richard Walsh. Mentoring First-Time Managers: Proven Strategies HR Leaders can Use. Center for Creative Leadership, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.35613/ccl.2015.2047.

Full text
Abstract:
"When individual contributors or professionals are promoted into their first formal leadership position, many do not realize how tough that transition can be for them. We often hear that these leaders are not prepared, and lack the support and development to help make that transition successfully. When they are not supported, they suffer, and so too do their teams, the organization, and the HR leadership pipeline, which ultimately can negatively impact the organization’s bottom line. First-time managers are an important part of an organization’s talent and succession management. In turn, organizations may attempt to help first-time managers make the transition into leadership easier by implementing a formal mentoring program. This white paper supports this effort by: • Explaining the benefits a mentoring program can provide for first-time managers and their mentor. • Providing organizations a way to strengthen their own mentoring programs. • Offering HR leaders specific steps to follow and best practices applied in starting and maintaining a successful formal mentoring program specifically aimed at first-time managers. Formal mentoring programs are useful to support and develop first-time managers, an important leadership population that is vital for strengthening your leadership pipeline and succession management efforts. Armed with the knowledge from this white paper, we believe you will be able to gain a competitive advantage".
