Abstract:
This paper corresponds to the results of an experimental research that to led to the design of a useful prototype for quality control of measurements in the field of tonometry to diagnose and check glaucoma. All tonometry techniques are based on Goldmann ́s tonometers (GT) and the Imbert-Fick principle. Taking into account the principles and techniques of industrial metrology, the prototype could be used as a standard to calibrate the pressure readings of this class of tonometers. The developed protoype eliminates the indirect measurement that is required with current standards and facilitates a greater control of the sources of error in the measurement. The model is based on the integration of a sensor to a hydraulic model to measure pressures from 0 to 80 mmHg range, whose precision was validated through R&R studies. The precision of the prototype was validated according to the Rigel UNI-SIM standard and was complemented by calibrating 15 tonometers.

In aviation engineering, Aviation Safety must be an extreme concern for the government as a regulator / facilitator, each component of the Airport sub-system in conducting its operations must still prioritize flight safety and safety. In this case the supporting components and the utilization of AI technology are felt to be very necessary in order to complete the needs will Fulfill Flight Safety by utilizing robots as a medium. In general, robots can be defined as a mechanical device that is able to do human work or behave like humans. One of the human jobs that can be done by robots is fire fighting activities. In this study, researchers designed a Fire Extinguisher Robot to find and extinguish fire. The design of this robot uses an ultrasonic sensor HC-SR04 as a parameter for the robot's path when there are objects around and a fire sensor module as a detector for the presence of fire this robot uses MG995 servo that is useful as a controller hose from the water pump. The circuit in this robot has important components, the Arduino microcontroller functions as the brain of the robot and the L298P Motor Shield Driver functions as a DC motor drive module. If the robot detects a fire while walking, the robot will stop and extinguish the fire using water and candles are used as a fire simulation when a fire is happening.

Abstract:
The 21st century Navy combatant ship will experience exponential increases in shipboard information to be processed, disseminated and integrated. High Definition System (HDS) technology will provide for the convergence of text, graphics, digital video, imagery, and complex computing to allow for a new range of advanced capabilities that exceed those of currently available workstations. These capabilities could result in unmanageable and overwhelming cognitive workloads for Navy tactical operators in CIC (Combat Information Center). For this reason, a prototype user interface was designed using future combat system requirements, proposed HDS capabilities, and human-computer interface design standards and principles. Usability testing of the protoype user interface was conducted as part of an effort to identify integrated information management technologies which reduce operator workload, increase human performance, and improve combat system effectiveness. This demonstration will focus on explanation and demonstration of future concepts envisioned for the AEGIS operational environment; organization and functionality of the menu structures and window contents; the usability testing methods utilized; results from usability testing; and plans for utilization of the prototype shell in other operational environments.

Abstract:
One character that can be shaped in students at school is discipline. The exact time to enter school is one of the criteria for discipline that is applied in the Aliyah Negri 2 Ponorogo Madarasah. In order to improve information services to student guardians, MAN 2 Ponorogo changed the way manual attendance was made to students with fingerprint technology. But there are shortcomings in the use of fingerprint machines, the presence data on the machine is not real time in reporting student attendance to schools and student guardians. The solution is to integrate a fingerprint machine with Raspberry pi control. The Raspberry pi will automatically process the presence data inside the fingerprint machine so that it can be accessed via the web wherever the user is located and automatically sends the attendance report to the guardian using the telegram media. The design of this study uses the waterfall method in designing application prototypes and the results are tested using the blackbox method with a boundary value analysis technique. In subjective testing the system will be tested using a questionnaire about the ease of using the system to users.

Abstract:

A prototype is a general description which depicts what an entire set of exemplars, belonging to a certain category, looks like. We investigate how prototypes, in the form of mathematical averages of a category's exemplar vectors, can be represented, extracted, accessed, and used for learning in an Artificial Neural Network (ANN). From the method by which an ANN classifies exemplars into categories, we conclude that prototype access (the production of an extracted prototype) can be performed using a very simple architecture. We go on to show how the architecture can be used for prototype extraction by simply exploiting how the back-propagation learning rule handles one-to-many mappings. We note that no extensions to the classification training sets are needed as long as they conform to certain restrictions. We then go on to show how the extracted prototypes can be used for the learning of new categories which are compositions of existing categories and we show how this can lead to reduced training sets and ultimately reduced learning times. A number of restrictions are noted which have to be considered in order for this to work. For example, the exemplar representations must be systematic and the categories linearly separable. The results, and other properties of our network, are compared with other architectures which also use some kind of prototype concept. Our conclusion is that prototype extraction and learning using prototypes is possible using a simple ANN architecture. Finally, we relate our system to the symbol grounding problem and point out some directions for future work.

Abdulhadi, Sami. "ARM i inbyggt system - med prototyp." Thesis, Karlstad University, Faculty of Technology and Science, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-4612.

Abstract:

Inbyggda system blir allt vanligare i dagens samhälle.

Embedded systems has become more and more common in today's society. The embedded systems are included in almost everything today, from various vehicles to children's toys.

Today's technology means that yesterday's solutions can be realised on a fraction of the area. More and more become surface mounted with smaller and more complex circuits. This is not always an advantage for the developers when assembling and soldering prototype circuit boards become a more difficult and/or an expensive process.

The goal is to create an embedded system with an ARM-processor. The system will consist of USB-OTG, ethernet, various memory like FRAM and microSD and a display with touchscreen for user interface. The project includes everything from choice of components to test and verification with program code.

The time was too short to include all the parts that was planned. The result of the project was a prototype card and two small program sequences, one that blinks the two light diodes on the card and one that writes a picture on the display.

This embedded system is intended for evaluating ARM-processors by Mikrododakt AB.

Full text
Abstract:
According to statistics, in 2010 there were 26 individuals seen by a group of 100,000 who were depending in home oxygen therapy (HOT). Oxygen treatment adds a certain amount of Oxygen to the patient because the ability to breathe correctly and sufficiently is negatively affected. The dominant disease that leads to HOT is COPD, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. As the name suggests, it is a chronic disease which gives inflammatory changes to the lung bronchioles. These changes affect the breathing surface which results in that the individuals’ respiratory capacity becomes reduced. The project used methods from dynamic product development with the user in focus. This to obtain a functional prototype that could be used by the target group and to fulfill the purpose, goals and requirements set for the project's results. An important component of the project therefore was to work with the collection of data. For this, various methods were used to obtain information from users as well as prescribers of HOT. All of the methods used have been tested earlier and proven reliable. This project collected information from interviews, observations, matrix arrays, risk analysis and usability testing in patients with HOT. The prototype developed in the project resulted in that the target group could perform live test without any risks during testing. The results showed that the aim and objective for the project were fulfilled, expressed in that patients would be able to move the oxygen tube used in HOT. It was further concluded that the results fulfilled the patients' desire and opportunity to move the Oxygen tube in their home and at the same time answered the questions that the project was to answer. There were no existing solutions to the problem which is included in the project, but it was possible to develop a first prototype that met the purpose and object of the project.

Abstract:
This report is a product development project of a ball launcher as requested by Sörmons HundklubbLKk. The project har been carried out as a thesis for the Bachelor of Science for the Innovation anddesign engineer program at Karlstad University. The client wished to begin training in a dog sport called Flyball. This sport can be likened to a relayrace where two teams of dogs race against each other. One dog per team runs along a path, leapingover obstacles, up to a ball launcher. When the dog jumps at the ball launcher to stop its momentumand turn back, a ball, launched about two feet, is to be caught by the dog. The dog then returns thesame way along the track as it came to switch with the next dog on the team. The last dog who finishfirst wins for their team.Due to large costs when importing a ball launcher, and the product not being available in Sweden, the client wanted a Swedish version developed. The goal was to minimize the price with the criterionto maximize longevity. The work of the project has followed the product development process as studied at KarlstadUniversity, with great influence by idea generation techniques, analog and digital sketching, 3Dmodeling and mechanical drawing techniques. Construction of the prototype has been carried out inthe workshop at Karlstad University with an evolutionistic design approach. A combination of lateralthinking for creativity and vertical thinking for logic and confirmation was used throughout theproject. The result of the project was a prototype that could be tested in a real environment at the dog cluband was confirmed to function as desired. Due to the availability of material at the workshop, construction of the ball launcher was possible at no cost to the client. This was a request, althoughnot a requirement for the project. The client also wanted to keep the prototype which was constructed to use within the club fortraining purposes. Therefore the ball launcher was completed to a finished prototype after projectclosure.

Dahlin, Sanna, and Henrik Fagerlund. "Mechanical Mirror." Thesis, KTH, Mekatronik, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-296234.

Full text
Abstract:
This bachelor thesis aims to present an overview of the performed steps to construct and program a prototype of a mechanical mirror. The idea of a mechanical mirror is that a camera captures an image that is translated into pixels of different brightness values. The brightness values are later displayed by metal plates, acting as pixels, rotated to different angles to reflect a corresponding light from a lamp. The pixels together shape grayscale images based on the frames captured by the camera. A prototype was constructed successfully. Tests showed that its purpose to move according to the captured image was fulfilled although adjustments could be made for the light to reach all the pixels to a greater extent. The angle span for the pixels turned out to be between 32°and 44°, which proved sufficient for their purpose. The reason for a difference in angle spans between the pixels was due to minor construction errors and was not an issue of functionality for the mirror. The refresh rate of the mirror, which could be described as the frequency at which the pixels rotate and shape an image, was set to 25 frames per second. This allowed the mirror to mimic movements in front of it without much delay while not exceeding the frame rate of the camera, which capture at a frame rate of 30 frames per second. The camera was therefore the vital limitation for the refresh rate of the mirror.

Abstract:
This thesis is a project where the aim was to develop a beta prototype for a behaviour analysis device for dogs. The device uses motion tracking sensors to analyse and predict its behaviour. The thesis project started with understanding the customer segment and defining the design direction on that basis. This was then followed by concept generation, realisation and evaluation. This included traditional design methodologies and design procedures where the designs were evaluated and modelled. This was a highly iterative design process which was followed by FEA and Moldflow analyses. Prototypes were made at the KTH prototyping centre, where various versions were made in FDM printers and validated. The beta prototype was later produced using SLA printers and validated for waterproofing. Drop test was simulated with Ansys to determine the amount of deformation in the device when dropped, the results point out that the device is well within an acceptable deformation range. The Moldflow analyses highlighted aspects of the design that required further modifications to improve the manufacturability of the device.

Abstract:
A system was created for sand traction performance testing of tire prototypes for extraterrestrial use by NASA. The system consists of a suspended sand-filled trough that rotates when driven by the prototype. Sensors are used to determine traction slippage of prototypes, providing a quantitative measure of relative prototype performance. This paper describes system improvements to better simulate extraterrestrial environments and more accurately measure prototype performance. A tire prototype hard stop was designed and built to prevent damage associated with the tire assembly resting in the trough. A rock obstacle was created to simulate rough terrain. A sensor system was designed to more accurately determine tire velocity. Various concepts were developed and prototyped to groom the sand during testing. Computational hardware and software upgrades were made to better facilitate the data acquisition processes. An instructional video was created to explain operational procedures. The sensor system will be integrated with the software and a sand grooming concept will be implemented.

Abstract:
This paper presents experimental endurance results of three undergraduate-designed and built soft soil traction concepts. An experimental approach was chosen due to the limitations of current analytical models of traction on soft soils. The use of analytical models requires detailed understanding of the geometry and mechanics of the tread not readily available. Experimental methods do not require this advanced understanding and provide rapid and realistic results. Building on previous research which showed that the use of high density foam and concave geometry increased the traction performance of a tire in sand, three new concepts are prototyped with a focus on exploring endurance and survivability in aggressive testing. These prototypes employed the use of thinner foam than was previously studied, bed liner, and a combination of Kevlar and bed liner (“Kevliner”). The prototypes were tested in a rotating trough filled with sand where each tread prototype was subjected to distance and acceleration tests with and without a rock obstacle. The damage incurred by the prototype and the percentage of slip between the tire and the trough was recorded during each test to assess the performance of each prototype. Analysis of the slip data collected showed that there was little variation in traction between the three prototypes. This was expected as each concept was based on similar working principles for traction. Therefore, more significance was placed on the physical damage sustained by the prototype to evaluate performance than the slip. The Kevliner prototype proved to be the highest performing prototype. It was the only prototype to complete the entire testing suite. The thin foam and bed liner prototypes both sustained severe damage during an acceleration test with the rock obstacle (the fifth of the six tests). The success of the Kevliner prototype can be attributed to the added strength and durability provided by the Kevlar.

Abstract:
Shape memory composites (SMCs) are very interesting for self-deployable structures in aerospace applications. SMCs have been widely developed but not yet fully applied to space. In this study a lab-scale production of SMC prototypes for aerospace is described. Conceptual design of small-scale structures were prototyped with the aim to define several configurations which are able to self-deploy. SMC prototypes were manufactured by using two layers of carbon/epoxy prepreg with a shape memory epoxy resin interlayer. Two different configurations were produced to prototype complex shape for multiple folding and 3D deployments of de-orbiting structures. In particular, the first prototype tests a de-orbiting system without the sail to study the complex folding and de-folding mechanisms. The second configuration evaluates a de-orbiting dual-sail for satellite applications. The SMC structures were produced in the opened shape and subsequently memorized in the closed configuration. The initial deployed configuration is recovered by heating the prototype. The closed configuration increases the packing efficiency of large structures for space orbiting systems. The shape memory properties were provided only to folding zones. Memory-recovery-cycles have been performed to test SMC performances. As a result, the two configurations can successfully self-deploy following the desired design constraints and recovering the original flatness without noticeable defects.

Abstract:
Cruise SO268 is fully integrated into the second phase of the European collaborative JPI-Oceans project MiningImpact and is designed to assess the environmental impacts of deep-sea mining of polymetallic nodules in the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCZ). In particular, the cruise aimed at conducting an independent scientific monitoring of the first industrial test of a pre-protoype nodule collector by the Belgian company DEME-GSR. The work includes collecting the required baseline data in the designated trial and reference sites in the Belgian and German contract areas, a quantification of the spatial and temporal spread of the produced sediment plume during the trials as well as a first assessment of the generated environmental impacts. However, during SO268 Leg 1 DEME-GSR informed us that the collector trials would not take place as scheduled due to unresolvable technical problems. Thus, we adjusted our work plan accordingly by implementing our backup plan. This involved conducting a small-scale sediment plume experiment with a small chain dredge to quantify the spatial and temporal dispersal of the suspended sediment particles, their concentration in the plume as well as the spatial footprint and thickness of the deposited sediment blanket on the seabed.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper presents the findings of the pilot studies and recommendations for designing of two-hinged wooden arches. The prototype models of wooden arches with the span of 6mand the rise of 1m were designed. The models had a rectangular cross-section of 180x40mm and a T-section of 180x40mm with a plywood plate with the thickness of 6 mm and the width of 500mm. The main objective of the T-section was to ensure the stability of the arch. Each arch was composed of six segments –boards joined by clamping plates. The bowstring truss including two inclined tie bars enables carrying asymmetric loads and provides in-plane stability of the arch. A methodology for laboratory testing of the prototype models of wooden arches subjected to different types of loads was developed. Two prototypes of wooden arches were tested with rectangular cross-sections and two T-section ones subjected to the loading across the span, and two prototypes subjected to the half-span loading. In total, eight arches were tested. Deflections of arches, cross-section deformations and arch thrust force were recorded. The arches were tested until failure. The results of testing revealed insufficient stability of the arches with rectangular cross-section in the horizontal plane. For the arches with T-section the whole arch rib was damaged, the in-plane stability was ensured by the T-section. The collapsing force of the T-section arch was about 1.3 times greater than the collapsing force of the rectangular section arches.

Abstract:
To improve traffic performance and safety, the ability to measure traffic accurately and effectively, including motorists and other vulnerable road users, at road intersections is needed. A past study conducted by the Center for Road Safety has demonstrated that it is feasible to detect and track various types of road users using a LiDAR-based system called TScan. This project aimed to progress towards a real-world implementation of TScan by building two trailer-based prototypes with full end-user documentation. The previously developed detection and tracking algorithms have been modified and converted from the research code to its implementational version written in the C++ programming language. Two trailer-based TScan units have been built. The design of the prototype was iterated multiple times to account for component placement, ease of maintenance, etc. The expansion of the TScan system from a one single-sensor unit to multiple units with multiple LiDAR sensors necessitated transforming all the measurements into a common spatial and temporal reference frame. Engineering applications for performing traffic counts, analyzing speeds at intersections, and visualizing pedestrian presence data were developed. The limitations of the existing SSAM for traffic conflicts analysis with computer simulation prompted the research team to develop and implement their own traffic conflicts detection and analysis technique that is applicable to real-world data. Efficient use of the development system requires proper training of its end users. An INDOT-CRS collaborative process was developed and its execution planned to gradually transfer the two TScan prototypes to INDOT’s full control. This period will be also an opportunity for collecting feedback from the end user and making limited modifications to the system and documentation as needed.
