Abstract:
Pour entreprendre l'étude du plasma de quarks et de gluons formé dans les collisions d'ions lourds ultra-relativistes, il est nécessaire de comprendre le comportement de la matière nucléaire froide. C'est dans cette optique que des collisions deuton-or à 200 GeV dans le centre de masse nucléon-nucléon ont été étudiées au collisionneur RHIC. La résonance J/[psi] est l'une des sondes proposées pour étudier le plasma. Nous avons étudié sa production via le canal de désintégration muonique à l'aide des spectromètres à muons de l'expérience PHENIX. Nous avons développé une méthode d'ajustement des traces et du vertex, basée sur l'algorithme de Kalman, pour analyser les données recueillies dans ces spectromètres. La production de la résonance J/[psi] a été examinée en fonction de différentes variables cinématiques et géométriques. La comparaison aux données recueillies dans les collisions proton-proton permet de mieux comprendre les phénomènes, tel le shadowing ou l'absorption, intervenant dans les collisions où le plasma de quarks et de gluons n'est pas formé

Bibliography: pages 94-99.<br>This thesis describes work performed to establish and demonstrate a quantitative trace element microanalysis technique for geological material using protons accelerated by the Van de Graaff Accelerator at the National Accelerator Centre (NAC) in Faure near Cape Town. The method relies on the analysis of Proton Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) spectra, interpreted with the help of the GeoPIXE software package. The use of the Si(Li) energy dispersive detector provides simultaneous multi-element detection at the parts-per-million (ppm) level, and a scanning beam facility permits trace element distributions to be studied at these levels. The calibration of the detector efficiency and the thicknesses of selectable X-ray attenuating filters was performed using pure elemental samples. This involved the accurate determination of the target to detector distance, the thickness of the active volume of the Si(Li) detector crystal, the thicknesses of all the absorbing layers between the sample and the detector crystal, and the assessment of the effects of incomplete charge collection in the detector.

Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2002.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: We use Hanbury-Brown Twiss interferometry to determine Bose-Einstein correlations in the transverse and longitudinal directions. By using these two directions, we are able to determine the shape of the pion emitting source. The analysis is done with the UA1 (1985) data for pp collisions at Vs = 630 GeV. Two frames of reference, namely the laboratory frame and the Longitudinal Center-of-Mass System (LCMS) are used. A fit to a two-dimensional Gaussian parametrization yields good results. In the laboratory frame, an oblate form of the source is observed, with the value of the transverse radius (rt) larger than the longitudinal (rL) one. The LCMS analysis finds a prolate form of the source (rt < rL). A few reasons are discussed for the difference in the shape between the different reference frames. Our results are also compared with other hadron-hadron and e+ e: experiments.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hanbury-Brown Twiss interferometrie was gebruik om Bose-Einstein korrelasies in die transversale en longitudinale rigtings te bepaal. 'n Passing met 'n twee-dimensionele Gaussiese parametrisering het goeie resultate opgelewer. In die laboratorium stelsel, is 'n ovaalvormige vorm vir die bron waargeneem, met die transversale radius (rt) groter as die longitudinale radius (rl)' Die Longitudinale Massamiddelpunt stelsel het 'n prolate vorm vir die bron voorspel, met rt < ri, 'n Paar redes vir die verskil in die vorm van die pion-bron vir die verskillende verwysingstelsels word bespreek. Ons resultate word ook met ander hadron-hadron en e+e- eksperimente vergelyk.

Nous mesurons la partie réelle de l'amplitude nucléaire élastique proton-antiproton à l'avant à une énergie dans le centre de masse de 546 GeV en utilisant l'interférence avec l'amplitude Coulombienne. Nous avons pris les données au collisionneur SPS du CERN, avec une optique spéciale de façon à détecter des diffusions élastiques avec un très faible angle de déflection. Nous étalonnons tout d'abord les différents détecteurs. Nous reconstruisons ensuite les trajectoires des particules chargées dans les chambres à fils. La mesure des acolinéarités horizontale et verticale entre le proton et l'antiproton permet de sélectionner efficacement les événements élastiques. Nous mesurons l'efficacité des chambres à partir des données elles même grâce à la redondance de l'information. Nous simulons l'acceptance de l'appareillage, l'effet de l'inefficacité et de la résolution des détecteurs, et les effets de faisceau par une méthode de Monte-carlo. Nous corrigeons alors la distribution de la valeur de la quasi-impulsion transférée, et un ajustement fournit la valeur du rapport de la partie réelle et de la partie imaginaire de l'amplitude égal à 0. 25 ±0. 04. Les relations de dispersion établissent une liaison entre les parties réelle et imaginaire de l'amplitude nucléaire. La plupart des modèles décrivant l'amplitude nucléaire comportent uniquement une partie symétrique de croisement à haute énergie et prédisent une valeur du rapport à 546 GeV proche de 0. 13. Notre mesure, plus élevée à trois déviations standard, constitue l'indication d'une physique nouvelle à haute énergie, compatible ] avec un oddéron

Le sujet de cette thèse porte sur la recherche et la désintégration en ƬV du W, dans des collisions pp à √S = 540 et 630 GeV. La masse du Ƭ étant plus élevée que celle des plus légers des hadrons ( ), nous avons recherché une signature hadronique qui nous permette d'extraire un signal W parmi l’abondante production de jets QCD et de le distinguer des canaux W e et W. Nous avons montré que la présence d'une grande impulsion transverse manquante (associée aux neutrinos) et la faible multiplicité des produits de désintégration du sont deux caractéristiques décisives et suffisantes des évènements W pour cette recherche. Notre sélection portant sur une luminosité intégrée de 734 nb-1 aboutit à un ensemble de 20(6) évènements compatibles avec une désintégration du ± en π ± + nπ° (π π π + nπ° ). La contribution des différents bruits de fond a été estimée à 2 ± 1 évènements pour les W e e et 2. 8 ± 0. 7 évènements pour les jets QCD. Le comportement de notre signal a été comparé qualitativement aussi bien que quantitativement avec une production W. Le résultat le plus important que nous ayons obtenu est le test d'universalité du couplage du W aux doublets (e, ve), ( ) et ( ) et (à Q2 =m2 w) qui, exprimé à l'aide du l'apport des constantes de couplage gr et ge donne gr/ ge = 1. 06 ± 0,12 ± 0,05<br>This thesis is about the search for the W decay at a pp collider with =540 And 630 GeV. Since the mass is larger than the masses of the lightest hadrons (π, K, p,. . . ), we have searched for hadronic signature which allows to separate a W signal from the abundant production of QCD jets and at the same time to distinguish this channel from the W e and W , channels. We have shown that the presence of a large missing transverse energy (associated with neutrinos) and the limited multiplicity of the decay products are two decisice and sufficient characteristics of W events in this search. A selection based on these criteria has been performed on data corresponding to 734 nb-1 and yields 20(6) events compatible with the r± decay in π ± + nπ° (π π π + nπ° ). The background from W e is estimated to be 2 ± 1 events and the QCD jets contribute 2. 8 ± 0. 7 events. The comportment of our signal has been compared qualitatively and quantitatively with the production of W , in the standard model of weak and electromagnetic interactions. The most important result we have obtained is the test of universality of the lepton (e, , ) couplings to the W at Q2 = m2w, which can be expressed in terms of the ratio of the coupling constant gr and ge gr/ ge = 1. 06 ± 0,12 ± 0,05

Le Modèle Standard des interactions électromagnétiques et faibles prévoit l’existence des bosons intermédiaires W+̲ et Z° et prédit leurs masses. L’accumulation d’antiprotons par refroidissement stochastique et la transformation de l’accélérateur SPS du CERN en collisionneur a permis de réaliser des collisions p-p̄ à 546 GeV d’énergie dans le centre de masse. Cette thèse expose la mise en évidence des bosons intermédiaires à travers leurs désintégrations Z° → e⁺ e⁻ et W → ev. Pendant les périodes de prise de données de 1982 et 1983, 8 désintégrations Z° → e⁺ e⁻ et 32 désintégrations W → ev avec un électron de pT &gt; 25 GeV/c ont été observées dans l’expérience UA2. Les sections efficaces de production du W+̲ et du Z° ainsi que les paramètres des interactions faibles : MW, MZ, sin²θW et p sont déterminés. Les valeurs obtenues sont en accord avec les prédictions du Modèle Standard, qui se trouve ainsi brillamment confirmé. Une limite supérieure à la largeur totale de désintégration du Z° est donnée. On en déduit une limite supérieure sur le nombre de neutrinos supplémentaires. Les désintégrations radiatives des bosons intermédiaires sont discutées<br>The Standard Model of electromagnetic and weak interactions predicts the existence of the intermediate vector bosons W+̲ and Z° and gives precise predictions for their masses. Antiproton accumulation by stochastic cooling and the operation of the CERN SPS accelerator in collider mode made accessible pp̄ collisions at 546 GeV center of mass energy. This thesis presents the observation of the intermediate vector bosons through their decays Z° → e⁺ e⁻, W → ev. During running periods 1982 and 1983, 8 decays Z° → e⁺ e⁻ and 32 decays W → ev with an electron of pT &gt; 25 GeV/c were observed in UA2 experiment. Cross sections of W+̲ and Z° production and the weak interaction parameters: MW, MZ, sin²θW and p are determined. These results are in agreement with Standard Model predictions, thus confirming theory in a spectacular way. An upper limit to the total width of the Z° is given. An upper limit to the number of additional neutrinos is inferred. Radiative decays of the intermediate vector bosons are discussed

La matière qui nous entoure est formé de hadrons, eux-même constitués de quarks et de gluons. Ces derniers sont des composants élémentaires qui n'existent pas sous forme libre. Cependant nous savons à l'heure actuelle que la matière confinée dans des hadrons peut, dans des conditions de haute température et/ou de haute densité baryonique, se retrouver sous une forme déconfinée de plasma de quarks et de gluons. Pour réaliser expérimentalement les conditions permettant de former ce plasma de quarks et de gluons, nous avons besoin d'une machine capable de faire entrer en collision des noyaux à des énergies très élevées: cela est notamment possible au CERN, où se situe le plus grand accélérateur de particules du monde, le Large Hadron Collider, qui a permis de faire entrer en collisions des noyaux de plomb à une énergie par paire de nucléons de 2.76 et 5.02TeV, et des protons à des énergies allant de 0.9 à 13TeV. Les collisions entre noyaux de plomb permettent, en particulier, d'atteindre les conditions de densité d'énergie nécessaires à la formation de la phase de plasma de quarks et de gluons. Ce travail de thèse contribue à ce programme de physique par l'étude de la production de mésons neutres légers en collisions proton-proton à 13TeV, référence nécessaire pour comprendre les observations en collisions plomb-plomb. L'étude des mésons neutres légers a été menée dans le canal dimuonique par l'analyse du spectre de masse invariante des dimuons de masse inférieure à 1.5 GeV/c², permettant notamment de mesurer les sections efficaces des mésons eta, rho/omega et phi<br>The ordinary matter surrounding us is made of hadrons which in turn are composed of quarks and gluons. These latter are elementary constituents which cannot be observed in a free state. However it is at present recognized that this matter confined within hadrons can undergo, under extreme conditions of high temperature and/or highnet baryonic density, a transition to a state of deconfined quarks and gluons whichcalled quark gluon plasma. The conditions required to form this quark gluon plasma can be experimentallyachieved using a machine capable of colliding nuclei at very high energies: this is particularly the case at CERN where is located the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider, which collided Pb ions at a center-of-mass energy of 2.76 to 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair and protons of 0.9 to 13 TeV. Pb-Pb collisionssuch relativistic energies definitely allow for the suitable density conditions to form the quark gluon plasma phase. This thesis work contributes to this physics program by studying the production of neutral light mesons in collisions of proton-proton at 13 TeV, which provides the necessary reference to understand further observations done in Pb-Pb collisions. This study has been performed in the dimuon decay channel by analyzing the dimuon invariant mass spectrum in the region of masses lower than 1.5 GeV/c2 , giving accessthe measurement of the cross sections of eta, rho/omega and phi mesons

Nous mesurons le rapport de la partie reelle a la partie imaginaire de l'amplitude de diffusion elastique nucleaire proton-antiproton vers l'avant, a une energie dans le referentiel du centre de masse de 541. 2 gev, en estimant la contribution de l'interference constructive avec l'amplitude de diffusion coulombienne, aupres du collisionneur spps du cern. Cette mesure necessite l'acces a des angles de diffusion inferieurs a 120 rad, ce que nous obtenons avec une optique de faisceau speciale, et un ensemble de detection particulier positionne a environ 45 metres de part et d'autre du point d'interaction. Nous reconstruisons les coordonnees spatiales des trajectoires des deux hadrons diffuses, chacune etant mesuree deux fois. Nous disposons de chambres a derive pour la mesure de la coordonnee horizontale, et de detecteurs a fibres scintillantes pour celle de la coordonnee verticale. La redondance de l'information autorise une mesure de l'efficacite et de la resolution des detecteurs directement sur les donnees. Une simulation de l'experience, principalement geometrique, permet la creation de distributions d'acceptance. Nous selectionnons nos evenements de diffusion elastique, nous calculons les angles de diffusion associes au proton et a l'antiproton, et nous en deduisons la valeur du carre du quadrimoment transfere t. Nous formons alors les distributions en t, que nous corrigeons par la distribution en acceptance correspondante, et nous ajustons la valeur du rapport =0. 1350. 015, l'erreur presentee incluant les contributions statistique et systematique. Nous etudions plusieurs modeles theoriques d'echange de la voie t du type pole de regge, certains ayant une contribution negligeable de la partie impaire sous le croisement de l'amplitude de diffusion, d'autres non. Notre valeur de est compatible a au plus une deviation standard, avec les predictions de l'ensemble de ces modeles

Abstract:
Neutral two- and three-pion productions in proton-proton collisions at a center of mass energy of 2.465 GeV have been studied using the WASA detector and an internal pellet target at the CELSIUS storage ring in Uppsala. An important part of the detector for the measurments was a central electromagnetic calorimeter composed of 1012 CsI crystals, which measured the photons originating from neutral pion decays. Test measurements and calibration procedures for this detector part were carried out. An important part of the analysis was the identification of the neutral pions from the invariant mass of the decay gammas and the use of Monte Carlo simulations to understand the detector responds. Total cross sections for the pp→ppπ0π0 and pp→ppπ0π0π0 reactions are presented as well as distributions of relevant kinematical variables for the pp→ppπ0π0 reaction. The distributions show significant deviations from phase space predictions. These deviations are typical for resonance production. The excitation of two simultaneous Δ resonances seems to be the main reaction mechanism.

Polarized deep inelastic scattering experiments play a vital role in the exploration of the spin structure of the proton. The polarized proton-proton collider at RHIC provides direct access to the gluon spin distribution through longitudinal double spin asymmetry measurements of inclusive jets, pions, and dijets. This thesis presents the measurement of the dijet double differential cross-section in proton-proton collisions at center of mass energies of √s = 500 GeV. The data represent an integrated luminosity of 8.7 pb-1 recorded by the STAR detector during the 2009 RHIC run. A comprehensive jet analysis was performed to determine the ideal jet algorithm and jet parameters used in √s = 500 GeV collisions at the STAR detector. The cross-section is measured as a function of the dijet invariant mass (30 ≤ Mij ≤ 152 GeV) in the mid rapidity region with a maximum rapidity range of |ymax| ≤ 0.8. This result shows agreement with theoretical next-to-leading order pQCD calculations, motivating the use of dijet asymmetries at STAR to further constrain the shape of Δg(x).

Cytochrome c oxidase (CcO) reduces O2 to water with four electrons from cytochromes c2+ and four matrix protons. The energy released is conserved in the protonmotive force by translocation of four additional protons into the intermembrane space. Electrons are transferred via CuA, haem a, to the binuclear centre; haem a3 and CuB, where O2 is reduced. Four major aspects of its structure/function have been investigated in this study. Mid-infrared (IR) spectroscopy has been used to probe redox-induced structural changes. By using electrochemically-poised samples of cyanide- and carbon monoxide-ligated bovine CcO these redox-linked IR changes were shown to be linked primarily with CuA and haem a metal centre transitions with fewer changes associated with transitions in haem a3 and CuB. CcO contains a cross-linked Tyr-His which is believed to form a Tyr radical in the PM intermediate. In this work, electrochemical conditions to induce Tyr-His model compound radicals have been combined with IR spectroscopy to record IR reference spectra. This has aided tentative assignment of IR bands at 1572 cm-1 or 1555 cm-1 to v8a(C-C), 1519 cm-1 to v7a(C-O.) to the phenoxyl radical and at 1336 cm-1 to a His ring stretch of the cross-linked structure in the PM state of bovine CcO. There is strong evidence from mutagenesis studies in bacterial CcOs that the well-conserved D channel is the proton translocation pathway. However, mutagenesis studies in a human/bovine hybrid CcO of an extensive hydrophilic H channel suggest that it fulfils this function, at least in mammalian CcOs. A structural model of Saccharomyces cerevisiae CcO produced by homology modelling indicates that it also contains an H channel (Maréchal, A., Meunier, B., Lee, D., Orengo, C. and Rich, P. R. (2012) Biochim. Biophys. Acta. 1817, 620-628). However, measurements of the H+/e- stoichiometry of a yeast H channel mutant (Q411L/Q413L/S458A/S455A) suggest it is not critical for proton translocation in yeast CcO. The nuclear-encoded subunit 5 of yeast CcO has two isoforms, 5A and 5B. COX5A is expressed aerobically and COX5B below 1 µM O2. They are reported to alter core catalytic activity; however comparisons were not strictly controlled. Here mutants were constructed where COX5B expression was controlled by the COX5A promoter yielding wild type levels of aerobically expressed 5B isozyme. Interestingly, this 5B isozyme exhibits the same catalytic activity and oxygen affinity as the 5A isozyme and the previously observed elevated activity must arise from a secondary effect.

L’agglomération de Glanum (Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, 13) occupée dès l’Age du Bronze jusqu’au IIIème s. ap. J.-C., selon la chronologie actuellement admise, constitue une référence ornementale et architecturale en Provence, pour sa période dite « préromaine ». Pourtant, des incohérences entre chronologie (IIIème-IIème s. av. J.-C.) et son ornementation architecturale (de référence italique) subsistent. Le centre monumental de l’agglomération « préromaine » est attribué aux populations grecques de Marseille par Henri Rolland, principal fouilleur du site archéologique, alors qu’Anne Roth-Congès propose de rendre l’agglomération aux populations indigènes locales. Nous avons choisi l’étude de la zone centrale du site actuellement dégagé, pour discerner les influences ornementales de l’architecture publique et définir qui habitait la ville, qui était à l’origine de sa monumentalisation et quel était alors son statut administratif. A l’époque impériale, le forum est construit sur un remblai permettant l’aménagement d’une large plate-forme qui autorise la conservation des édifices monumentaux et leur mobilier architectural associé. Nous avons eu l’opportunité de mener une fouille archéologique de faible ampleur dans cette zone. Les études de la stratigraphie et du mobilier céramique autorisent désormais une nouvelle chronologie dénouant les incohérences d’antan. L’étude du mobilier architectural montre une large influence italique mais avec des caractéristiques propres, inspirées des décors orientaux. L’examen des vestiges conservés met en évidence le même phénomène avec une adaptation des plans classiques à la topographie de l’agglomération. Enfin, le statut de l’agglomération reste difficile à décrypter, mais il s’inscrit dans le cadre de l’administration romaine qui se met en place dans le courant du Ier s. av. J.-C<br>The urban area of Glanum (Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, 13) inhabited from the Bronze Age to the 3rd century A.D., according to the currently assumed chronology, constitutes a standard reference for ornamentation and architecture in Provence for the period known as “ pre-Romanesque”.Yet, some inconsistencies remain between its chronology (3rd- 2nd century B.C.) and its architectural ornamentation (with Italic reference). The monumental centre of the “pre-Romanesque” town has been ascribed to Greek populations in Marseilles by Henri Rolland, the principal digger of the archaeological site, whereas Anne Roth-Congès has proposed to give the town back to local native populations.We have chosen to study the central area of the currently cleared site in order to make out the ornamental influences of public architecture and to define who had lived in the town, who was at the origin of the creation of its monuments and which administrative status it had at the period.At the imperial time, the forum was built on an embankment permitting the development of a broad platform which allowed the preservation of monumental buildings and their associated architectural furniture. We had had the opportunity to carry out a small-scale excavation on this area. A close study of the stratigraphy and the ceramic furniture allowed from now on a new chronology which untangles the inconsistencies of former days.The examination of the architectural furniture shows a large Italic influence but with characteristics of its own, inspired by oriental décor. The study of preserved remains reveals the same phenomenon with an adaptation of classical plans to the topography of the town.Finally, the status of the town remains difficult to decipher but it must have been part of the Roman administration framework which was setting up in the course of the 1st century B.C

Les observations courantometriques dans la partie centrale de l'ocean atlantique equatorial profond revelent la presence de fluctuations a periodes annuelle et semi-annuelle sur la composante zonale de la vitesse essentiellement. L'analyse des donnees montre que la structure spatio-temporelle du signal basse-frequence est coherente avec la dynamique des ondes equatoriales. Une etude de processus est menee pour comprendre la reponse d'un bassin equatorial au forcage periodique par la tension zonale du vent. L'energie du vent atteint l'ocean profond par l'intermediaire de la propagation verticale d'ondes equatoriales. Une onde de rossby de mode meridien 1, excitee pres de la surface a la frontiere est du bassin, domine la reponse dans la partie ouest du bassin. Elle traverse le bassin d'est en ouest et se reflechit a la frontiere ouest en une onde de kelvin. Dans la partie est du bassin, la reponse est plus complexe car plusieurs ondes d'amplitudes comparables se superposent. La reponse, peu sensible aux parametres du forcage, peut etre consideree comme lineaire dans les couches profondes du modele. Son amplitude depend de la taille du bassin et de la frequence du forcage ; un phenomene de resonance apparait d'ailleurs a periode semi-annuelle. La transmission de l'energie, de la surface vers les couches profondes, se fait dans la partie est du bassin lors de la reflexion d'une onde de kelvin, forcee en surface, en ondes de rossby longues. Les courants moyens, plutot que la stratification, apparaissent comme une gene a la propagation des ondes dans les couches de surface. La presence d'un relief sous-marin ne modifie pas la nature de la reponse. Il est simplement une barriere a la propagation des ondes incidentes. Cette etude de processus permet de comprendre les premiers resultats d'un modele haute-resolution de l'ocean atlantique equatorial.

<p>Neutral two- and three-pion productions in proton-proton collisions at a center of mass energy of 2.465 GeV have been studied using the WASA detector and an internal pellet target at the CELSIUS storage ring in Uppsala. An important part of the detector for the measurments was a central electromagnetic calorimeter composed of 1012 CsI crystals, which measured the photons originating from neutral pion decays. Test measurements and calibration procedures for this detector part were carried out. An important part of the analysis was the identification of the neutral pions from the invariant mass of the decay gammas and the use of Monte Carlo simulations to understand the detector responds.</p><p>Total cross sections for the pp→ppπ<sup>0</sup>π<sup>0</sup> and pp→ppπ<sup>0</sup>π<sup>0</sup>π<sup>0</sup> reactions are presented as well as distributions of relevant kinematical variables for the pp→ppπ<sup>0</sup>π<sup>0</sup> reaction.</p><p>The distributions show significant deviations from phase space predictions. These deviations are typical for resonance production. The excitation of two simultaneous Δ resonances seems to be the main reaction mechanism. </p>

L'objectif de ce travail était de préciser l'implication de BCL6 dans les différents processus constitutifs de l'oncogénèse des lymphomes de phénotype B. Nous avons montré que (1)les réarrangements de BCL6 ne conduisent pas nécessairement à sa surexpression, que (2) les lymphomes avec une t(3 ;14)(q27 ;q32) se distinguent par leur origine cellulaire et les processus oncogéniques mis en jeu, que (3) les mutations somatiques de l'intron 1 de BCL6 ne sont pas corrélées à l'expression de la protéine dans les lymphomes folliculaires, et que (4) les mutations somatiques ont une distribution inter-allélique distincte en cas de translocation de BCL6, suggérant que le mécanisme à l'origine des mutations est également impliqué dans la survenue de la translocation<br>The BCL6 proto-oncogene, located on 3q37 chromosome, encodes a nuclear transcriptional repressor, which plays a pivotal role in germinal center formation, regulation of B-cell function, differentiation and survival. In this work, we demonstrated that (1) BCL6 expression in lymphomas is largely inependant of chromosome 3q27 rearrangements and is more related to the histological subtype, (2) lymphomas with t(3;14)5q27;q32) are characterized by a common cell of origin and the involvement of similar oncogenic mechanisms, (3) acquired somatic mutations of the first BCL6 intron do not correlate to the protein expression in follicular lymphomas, (4) the translocated BCL6 allele revealed significantly higher mutations when compared to the untranslocated allele, indicating that the two events, i. E somatic mutations and translocations may have linked origins

The ATLAS experiment – situated at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva – took its first collsion data in 2010. Physics topics include finding the Higgs boson, heavy quark physics, and looking for extensions of the Standard Model of Particle Physics such as supersymmetry. In this thesis, inclusive multi-jet production has been studied with the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, using an integrated luminosity of 17 nb−1. The anti-kt algorithm with distance parameter ℝ = 0.6 is used to identify jets. The inclusive multi-jet cross section is measured, as well as the ratio ofcross sections for inclusive production of n − 1 and n jets for n ≤ 6. The differential cross sections of the first, second, third and fourth leading jets as a function of transverse momentum, and the differential cross section as a function of the scalar sum of the pT of selected jets, HT, for different jet multiplicities are presented. The ratio of the differential cross section as a function of HT for 3-jet and 2-jet events is also measured. The results are compared to expectations based on leading order QCD, which agree with the data. In addition, a new method for calibrating the hadron response of a segmented calorim-ter is developed and successfully applied to 2004 ATLAS combined beam test data. It is based on a principal component analysis of the calorimeter layer energy deposits, exploiting longitudinal shower development information to improve the measured energyresolution. For pion beams with energies between 20 and 180 GeV, the particle energy is reconstructed within 3% and the energy resolution is improved by 11% to 25% comparedto the response at the electromagnetic scale. Multi-mode optical readout cables for the ATLAS liquid argon calorimeters, about one hundred meters in length, were installed between the main ATLAS cavern and the counting room in the USA15 cavern. Patch cables were spliced onto the ribbons and the fiber attenuation was measured. For 1296 fiber pairs in 54 cables, the average attenuation was 0.69 dB. Only five fibers were found to have losses exceeding 4 dB, resulting in a failure rate of less than 2 per mill. In the ATLAS liquid argon barrel presampler, short circuits consisting of small pieces of dust, metal, etc. can be burned away in situ by discharging a capacitor over the high voltage lines. In a burning campaign in November 2006, seventeen existing short circuits were successfully removed. An investigation on how to implement saturation effects in liquid argon due to high ionization densities resulted in the implementation of the effect in the ATLAS Monte Carlo code, improving agreement with beam test data. The timing structure of hadronic showers was investigated using a Geant4 Monte Carlo. The expected behavior as described in the literature was reproduced, with the exception that some sets of physics models gave unphysical gamma energies from nuclear neutron capture.<br>QC 20110125

The jet fragmentation function and transverse profile for jets with 25 GeV &lt; p(Tjet) &lt; 500 GeV and |eta(jet)| &lt; 1.2 produced in proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV are presented. The measurement is performed using data with an integrated luminosity of 36 pb(-1). Jets are reconstructed and their momentum measured using calorimetric information. The momenta of the charged particle constituents are measured using the tracking system. The distributions corrected for detector effects are compared with various Monte Carlo event generators and generator tunes. Several of these choices show good agreement with the measured fragmentation function. Using dimuon events produced in proton-antiproton collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV at the D⊘ detector, the integrated inclusive b-quark production cross section has been extracted. The inclusive b-quark production cross section for Pᵇ(T) > 9 GeV/c is 2.61 ± 0.07(Stat) ± 1.13(Syst) nb. The cross section, dσ/dΔφ(μμ) , where Δφ(μμ), is the azimuthal angle difference between the dimuons, has also been measured. Both measurements are in good agreement with next-to-leading order QCD predictions.

Les hydrogénases sont les métalloenzymes, issues de micro-organismes anaérobies, qui catalysent l'oxydation réversible de l'hydrogène moléculaire, suivant la réaction : H2 <--> 2H+ +2e-. Notre objectif est de progresser dans la compréhension du mécanisme réactionnel de ces enzymes, à savoir : le processus d'activation de H2 au niveau du centre catalytique à Ni-Fe et les voies de transfert des électrons et des protons issus de l'oxydation de H2. Nous utilisons une approche combinant la spectroscopie RPE et la photochimie pour étudier à températures cryogéniques, les propriétés de photosensibilité d'un intermédiaire clé du mécanisme catalytique, l'état Ni-C. Nous étudions en détail le profil énergétique de la photoconversion, la cinétique des processus de recombinaison, et l'influence de différents facteurs comme la température, les effets isotopiques H/D et la fixation d'inhibiteur (CO), dans le cas de plusieurs hydrogénases à [Ni-Fe-] et à [Ni-Fe-Se] de bactéries sulfato-réductrices ou d'organismes hyperthermophiles (A. Aeolicus). L'analyse des interactions magnétiques entre le centre actif à Ni-Fe et le centre [4Fe-4S]1+ proximal par la simulation numérique des spectres RPE multifréquences est également utilisée pour sonder les changements structuraux induits par l'irradiation. Nos résultats mettent en évidence un transfert de protons photo-induits au niveau des cystéines terminales de l'ion nickel, et permettent d'identifier le résidu Glutamate impliqué dans la première étape de transfert de protons, comme le confirment nos études de mutagénèse dirigée vers ce résidu.

The Integrating Feedback F-center Dosimeter is designed to be fault-tolerant, with the capability to distinguish the radiation dose received between a targeted tumor and surrounding tissue. To provide a proof of concept of the IF²D, five alkali halide salts will be irradiated by a tandem electrostatic proton accelerator. These salts, (NaCl, NaI, NaBr, NaF, CsF), were chosen for their f-center properties which enable a direct conversion between the wavelength of the irradiated salt i.e. color change, and the expected radiation dose. We expect that analytical calculations between wavelength and expected radiation dose will correlate with experimental data. A direct conversion will enable the doctor to determine how much radiation the salt has received and therefore how much radiation dose the tumor itself has received. As a result, the patient will require less exposure time, and less radiation treatments, thus reducing the probability of obtaining secondary cancers. EEn synthèse organique asymétrique, le contrôle de centres stéréogéniques en position " par rapport à un groupement carbonyle ou carboxyle est devenu incontournable. Les déconjugaisons photochimiques diastéréosélectives d'esters ",β-insaturés utilisant le 1,2;5,6 di-O-isopropylidèn-"-D-glucofuranose (DAGOH ou diacétone D-glucofuranose) comme inducteur ont donné d'excellents résultats. De nouvelles copules chirales disponibles sous leurs deux formes énantiomères ont été testées. La pantolactone ainsi que le trans-phénylcyclohexanol ont conduit à de bons excès diastéréoisomériques (e. D 85%). D'autre part, les déprotonations -protonations diastéréosélectives d'esters ",β-insaturés de diacétone D-glucofuranosyles en leurs analogues déconjugués se sont révélées, dans certains cas, tout aussi sélectives que les isomérisations photochimiques. La pantolactone ainsi que le diacétone D-glucofuranose se sont avérés efficaces également lors de dédoublements cinétiques par estérification d'acides carboxyliques (e. D. Allant jusqu'à 50%). Ces méthodologies ont permis de développer une approche énantiosélective de l'Amphidinolide R. Cette macrolactone issue de dinoflagellés marins (Amphidinium sp) est active vis-à-vis de lignées de cellules cancéreuses et constitue à ce titre une excellente cible synthétique. La réaction de fermeture de cycle par métathèse (RCM) s'est révélée être une étape clef de la synthèse de ce macrolide. La tolérance de cette réaction à la présence de groupements fonctionnels variés a permis d'aboutir à différentes macrolactones à quatorze chaînons, analogues potentiels de l'Amphidinolide R.

Proton coupled electron transfer reactions often involve tyrosine residues, because when oxidized, the phenolic side chain deprotonates. Tyrosine Z (YZ) is responsible for extracting electrons in a stepwise fashion from the oxygen evolving-complex in order to build enough potential to oxidize water. This process requires that each step YZ must deprotonate and reprotonate in order to maintain the high midpoint potential that is necessary to oxidize the oxygen-evolving complex, which makes YZ highly involved in proton coupled electron transfer reactions. In this thesis YZ has been studied within oxygen-evolving photosystem II utilizing electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy to monitor the tyrosyl radical that is formed upon light excitation. Kinetic analysis of YZ has shed light on the factors that are important for PSII to carry out water oxidation at the oxygen-evolving complex. Most notably the strong hydrogen-bonding network and the midpoint potential of YZ have been shown to be integral aspects of the water splitting reactions of PSII. By studying YZ within oxygen-evolving PSII, conclusions are readily applied to the native system.

Les transferts d'électrons sont des évènements clefs dans le fonctionnement des organismes vivants, en particulier pour la photosynthèse et la respiration. Pour étudier les processus de transferts d'électrons dans les. Centres réactionnels (CR) de Rhodobacter sphaeroides, nous avons utilisé une approche multidisciplinaire. Nous avons modifiés des facteurs environnementaux (membrane, pH, fixation d'ions de métaux de transitions) dans le but de suivre les modifications structurales et fonctionnelles associées. Ces modifications ont été étudiées en parallèle par spectroscopie de changement d'absorption et par modélisation moléculaire. Ce travail a conduit aux résultats suivants: - Influence du pH sur la position de Qs. Dans la littérature, la quinone secondaire (QB) est observée par cristallographie aux rayons X principalement dans deux positions. Il a été proposé que l'équilibre entre ces deux positions dépend de l'état redox de QB. En utilisant des calculs d'électrostatique de continuum, nous avons montré que cet équilibre conformationnel dépend non seulement de l'état redox de QB mais aussi du pH de la solution. - Influence de l'environnement membranaire sur les propriétés de transfert d'électron. Des CR ont été incorporés dans des liposomes de dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine. Nous avons montré que la transition de phase lipidique affecte différemment le premier et le second transfert d'électron entre la quinone primaire (QA) et QB. Cette observation confirme la différence de nature des étapes limitant ces deux transferts d'électrons. - Effet de la fixation de cadmium. Il existe dans la littérature un débat pour déterminer si l'effet des ions de métaux de transition sur le CR est local, sur les résidus qui participent à la fixation, ou plus délocalisé. Notre étude du KD pour le Cd2+, en combinant des méthodes expérimentales et théoriques, suggère que le Cd2+ interagit de manière électrostatique avec un domaine large de la protéine (interaction délocalisée)<br>Electron transfer reactions are key events in the. Functioning of living cells, in particular in photosynthesis and respiration. To study the electron transfer processes in proteins, we used a multi- disciplinary approach on the photosynthetic reaction center (RC) from Rhodobacter sphaeroides. We have modified some environmemal factors (membrane, pH, binding of transition metal ions) with the aim of following the induced structural and functional changes. These modifications were studied in parai lei by photoinduced absorption change spectroscopy and by molecular modeling. This work leads to the following results: - Effect of the pH on the Position of QB. Ln the literature, the secondary quinone (QB) is described using X-ray crystallography to occupy mainly two positions. The equilibrium between these two positions has been proposed to depend on the redox state of QB. Using electrostatics-based calculations, we have shown that the conformational equilibrium of QB does not solely depend on the' redox state OfQB, but also on the pH value of the solution. - Effect of the Membrane Environment on the Electron Transfer Properties. Experimentally, RC were incorporated in dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) liposomes. We have shown that the DMPC lipid phase transition influences differently the first and second electron transfer. The second electron transfer being sensitive to the lipid phase transition whereas the first electron transfer is not. This observation confirms the different nature of the rate limiting steps involved in the two electron transfer processes. - Effect of Cadmium Binding. There is a debate in the literature to determine if the effect of transition metal ion on the RC is either local, on the first shell of residues that bind it, or rather more delocalized. Our study of the Ko value of Cd2+, combining experimental and theoretical methods, suggest that the Cd2+ interacts electrostatically with a large domain of the protein (delocalized interaction)

Abstract:
Le mécanisme de compensation des substrats AsGa est basé sur l'existence d'un défaut profond intrinsèque EL2 de type donneur qui compense les accepteurs légers résiduels. Sa nature microscopique exacte n'était pas bien connue au début de notre étude. Nous nous sommes proposés donc d'apporter une contribution importante à son identification et à la connaissance de ses propriétés dans GaAs n et p et dans Gal-x Al As. Dans ce but, nous avons tenté de le créer artificiellement Nous avons également étudié les défauts profonds dans les matériaux GaAs type p. Les techniques capacitives de caractérisation des défauts sont: DLTS, DLOS, ODLTS, TSCAP. Nos résultats peuvent se répartir en cinq grandes parties : 1) Dans les couches LPE et VPE de GaAs type n irradiées aux protons à 300°C, nous avons mis en évidence la création d'un défaut EAl présentant la même signature thermique que EL2. Toutefois nous avons montré que ce piège ne présente pas le phénomène de photoquenching caractéristique particulière de EL2. 2) Nous avons montré que EL2 est créé dans GaAs type n par irradiation aux neutrons et recuit isotherme de longue durée à 300 K. Ce résultat est confirmé par l'existence du phénomène de métastabilité à 77 K. 3) Nous avons pour la première fois montré la présence de EL2 dans GaAs type p par DLTS à injection de minoritaires sur des jonctions n+p et par ODLTS sur des diodes Schottky. De plus, on a démontré que l'état double donneur du défaut EL2, se situe à 0. 52 eV de la bande de valence dans GaAs de type p. 4) Comme dans GaAs type n, nous avons mis en évidence la création artificielle du double état de charge de EL2 par irradiation aux neutrons dans GaAs type p. 5) Enfin, nous avons montré l'existence du défaut EL2 dans le composé ternaire Ga 1-x Alx. As élaboré par OMCVD et étudié ses propriétés en fonction de la composition x en A1. En particulier, nous avons mis en évidence le phénomène de photoquenching dans ces matériaux. L'ensemble de ces résultats est en bon accord avec'un défaut intrinsèque complexe du type AsGa + As ; proposé récemment.
