Abstract:
The Thesis argues the following: (1) Mainstream Protestant constituencies in the USA in this century have been problematically identified with the modem socio-cultural world organized around liberal values. (2) This has been manifested by (A) attempts to integrate Christianity into modem society on terms fundamentally in harmony with the principles of modernity; (B) attempts to employ Christian values to regulate society - attempts which are in tension with the underlying principles of ethos of modernity. (3) The thesis discovers the theological and historical roots of these patterns and points out the flaws in two movements that emerged in reaction to these patterns. (4) In a final chapter, the thesis accesses select theoretical resources which demonstrate the importance and basis of Christianity sustaining a differentiated relationship to society. In the conclusion, the gains derived from this theoretical inquiry are returned to the historical problem analyzed in the body of the dissertation.

Abstract:
When public schools began teaching music in the 19th century, the church took a secondary role in the education of the church parishioner. The purpose of this study was to examine congregational attitudes about singing before and after an experimental treatment. Two different Churches participated in "hymn of the month" programs, but different approaches were used at each church. The congregation of Erwin Presbyterian Church learned a new hymn through repetition, while the congregation of First Baptist Church learned a new hymn through congregational practice. Surveys using a Likert-type scale were administered at each church prior to and at the end of the month long project, which took place in February 2002. The results showed that while both congregations appeared to have better attitudes toward congregational singing following the project, there was a more dramatic change at Erwin Presbyterian Church.

Stanley, Amanda Noell. "Church in Black and White: Racially-Integrated Churches and Whites' Explanations for Racial Inequalities." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/33341.

Full text
Abstract:
Research by Emerson and Smith (1999) finds that conservative Protestants tend to blame racial inequalities on individual traits like motivation or ability as opposed to structural constraints such as oppression or discrimination. Emerson and Smith have also established that churches tend to be racially homogenous organizations. The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not members of racially-integrated congregations differ from members of racially-homogenous congregations in their explanations for racial inequalities. I am interested in further exploring interracial relations in the context of United Statesâ Protestant churches, particularly how the level of contact with persons of another race might affect whitesâ perceptions of reasons for racial inequality. I expect to find that individuals who attend racially-homogeneous churches will be less likely to recognize social constraints that may contribute to socioeconomic inequalities between whites and blacks than those who attend racially-integrated churches. In other words, I expect that attending a racially-integrated congregation will have a positive effect on giving structural-level explanations for racial inequality. Using existing data from the 1994 General Social Survey, I analyze the relationship between attendance in a multi-racial congregation and explanations for racial inequalities. The data do not support the hypothesis.

Abstract:
Religion
Ph.D.
This dissertation is a sociological exploration of Korean Protestant immigrant churches in the United States and the influence of Confucian traditions on them. Neo-Confucianism was accepted as the state ideology in Korea in the late fourteenth century, and its influences are still strong in Koreans' expressions of thought and worldviews, and Korean immigrants in the United States are no exception. Confucian elements are observed not only in Korean Protestant churches in Korea but also Korean immigrant churches in the United States. Thus, it can be said that Korean immigrant churches have the characteristics of a transnational religious institution. Transnationally, Confucian characteristics affect Korean churches. Further, Confucian traditions are integral to a collective consciousness for Korean immigrants, and thus their relationships and manners, based on Confucian traditions and teachings, enable them to maintain and reinforce their social solidarity. Moreover, such Confucian teachings and cultural mores are inculcated in most Koreans' habitus. As social agents, church members use symbolic capital, such as age and Confucian manners, to gain higher status in the church. In particular, age can be considered generational capital that determines and legitimizes church members' positions. Indeed, Korean Protestant churches across the Pacific can be called Confucian Protestant churches, namely, Protestant churches imbued with Confucian traditions. Korean immigrant churches are transnational and socially cohesive religious institutions that are shaped profoundly by Confucian traditions inculcated in their adherents' habitus across seas and generations.

Abstract:
The construction of the Temple of Solomon - in this work named as New Temple of Solomon - was announced in 2010 by Bishop Edir Macedo as a great project to be held in São Paulo City by the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG). Since its birth in 2014, in addition to a convertion of its aesthetics (or appearance) applied in this sacred space with the use of objects, vestments and decoration with Jewish motifs , the UCKG praxis underwent substantial changes; which include doctrinal, discursive, liturgical, architectural, and symbolic aspects that affected all temples from this denomination. Such changes directly reflect the sense that the UCKG is trying to build around the elements that constitute its new sanctuary. The origins, motives and the way in which this process of resignification of the Jewish symbolism, realized by the Universal, is the core to understand what is behind this unique enterprise in world, that was chosen like the main study object of this work. The purpose of this research is to show that, besides being a mega temple built in the capital of the homonymous state of São Paulo and the maximum symbol of power of the denomination founded by Edir Macedo, the New Temple of Solomon is an expansion project from Universal Church of the Kingdom of God for the next years.

Lee, Siu Chau. "The theology of church-state relations in Protestant thought with final reference to the contemporary context of the Chinese churches." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2001. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.368836.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis is a study of the theology of church-state relations in Protestant thought with reference to the secular world and the Chinese context in particular. The theological basis is the Chalcedonian character of differentiation without confusion yet coordination without division. Hence I argue for both complementarity of church and state and critical support of the church for the state. In the contemporary pluralist era, the church should recognize itself as one among other institutions cooperating with the state for the benefit of society. Also the church should emphasize itself as a religious community proclaiming Christ's salvation and a moral community living out Christ's love for others. The manner of applying this theological principle is context-specific, giving rise to different emphases. Luther emphasizes the necessity of civil obedience to be offered by the church to the state, unless the state oversteps its limit. This emphasis fits in the context of obtaining civil support for his reformation. Calvin upholds a distinction while emphasizing a cooperation of the two entities to regulate society, even allowing the convergence of their jurisdiction. It is feasible only when the Genevan city council sides with Calvin's reformation, providing a suitable context beforehand. In the context of Nazi Germany, Barth emphasizes a theology of mutual responsibility as the basis of church and state to fulfil their obligations. His writing of Barmen Declaration manifests a distinctive confessional responsibility as the basis of Christian political witness. This context of a totalitarian government also promotes Bonhoeffer's teaching on Christian discipleship, emphasizing representative action which is an imitation of Christ to live for others, even to the extent of self-sacrifice. Moreover, by stressing religious and political differentiation, secularization leads to a more clarified distinction of the functions of church and state in society. Yet the context of secularization enhances the theology of mutual responsibility of church and state which can beneift society as a whole. It excludes the concept of anarchy, and the church's flight from the concrete conditions of human society. The Chinese context further reveals that the church in this modern world is no longer the sole partner of the state but is merely one among other institutions working for the good of the nation. So the church's contribution to secular order is less at the level of state and more at the level of civil society.
