Abstract:
Members of the athlete medical/sport science support team must be confident that athletes are benefitting from treatment, and that they are not victims of medical mismanagement. Athletes must not be treated differently to any other patient in society. This chapter discusses why protection of the child athlete is necessary, and how child athletes can be subjected to psychological abuse, which may form the gateway to other types of abuse. These can include physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect, all of which are prevalent in all sports and at all levels. It also covers particularly vulnerable groups of child athletes, including the elite, the disabled, and the LGB (lesbian, gay, bisexual) athlete populations. It covers the many sport organizations working in the field of child athlete protection, as well as the existing statutes governing the rights and freedoms of children in sport.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the protectability and registration of athletes’ names, nicknames, and catchphrases as trademarks under federal law. More and more athletes are seeking to register their names, nicknames, catchphrases, and fan slogans as federal trademarks in an attempt to monetize their fame and cultural capital. However, their goals in filing those applications are not often in accord with the traditional goals of trademark law. After providing an overview on trademark use and registration, the chapter discusses some of the limitations for trademark protection, including those based on distinctiveness, false association, and confusion. It also explains how trademark doctrines affect athletes’ ability to protect certain words or phrases as trademarks. Finally, it considers how the general goals of trademark law correspond to an athlete’s desire to protect words and phrases associated with him or her and prevent others from appropriating them.

Abstract:
Some of the first research in disability sport focused on athletic identity using the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS). A large body of research has supported a robust finding that athletes with disabilities view themselves as legitimate athletes, whereas they believe that others (e.g., the able-bodied public) do not view them as athletes as strongly. This chapter examines descriptive and correlational research completed with the AIMS. Descriptive work indicates Paralympians relative to recreational athletes have stronger athletic identities. Correlational research indicates that athletes with strong athletic identities are more competitive and confident and have stronger sport intentions. At the same time, athletes with exclusive athletic identities may be at risk for experiencing negative affect when unable to play. Athletes may disinvest in sport and an athletic identity as their skills wane and they anticipate no longer participating in sport. While a disinvestment in athletic identity can be viewed as a self-esteem protective strategy it might also have negative performance ramifications.
