Full textProstitution as a phenomenon engages and evokes feelings, both among individuals and public actors. In this work, we illustrate the development of public society's view of prostitution by analysing the period when it was publicly regulated and controlled in Sweden, 1859 – 1918. This period contains crucial shifts in society's view of prostitution, a phenomenon previously in history seen as a serious offence in and of itself. The regulations were introduced as an infection prevention project with the goal to stop the spread primarily of syphilis. However, the regulations also came to be characterised by moral aspects before, after renewed investigations, it was stated that it had played its role in halting the spread of venereal disease and prostitution came to be regulated by other legislation. The purpose of the study is to identify, through a qualitative literature study, what laws, rules and penalties that surrounded the handling of prostitution during the studied period, what the state’s and health care system’s views on prostitution were and how they influenced the legislation and how the regulatory system can be understood based on the theories of stigma and the ideal victim. The essay’s main conclusions are that, in literature, it is possible to identify clear changes in the public society's attitudes towards prostitution during the period studied. At the beginning of the period, prostitution was mainly seen as a sanitary problem, but eventually it became viewed as a more social one. Furthermore, we have been able to demonstrate that the system of regulation can be understood on the basis of Erving Goffman's theory of stigma, but that the status of the female prostitute as victim according to Nils Christie's theory of the ideal victim is more complex and multifaceted.

Full textBased on a research about the places of street prostitution in Luxembourg City, this thesis offers an ethnography of its various situations without reducing prostitution to a mere sexual and monetary exchange. Through paying attention to the situations and interactions, to the constraints and resources with which people who prostitute themselves have to deal with, this work examines the places of prostitution under their human, social, material, spatio-temporal, regulatory and meaningful dimensions.Yet, to understand the place of prostitution in the city and in the society, it is necessary to call on a socio-historical perspective so as to reveal by what means the local populations, as early as the 1990s, contributed to the formation of a “prostitution problem” that required the intervention of the authorities, and primarily of the local governments. Its resolution by the authorities involved explanatory theories and moral judgments, and gave rise to diverse forms of public action. Finally, it is shown how imposing, on behalf of public order, a distinction between forbidden or authorized places for prostituting, and the entire balance of power passing through them, lead the people who prostitute themselves in the public space to continually renegotiate a local social order. Across the board, this thesis studies the social tensions that crystallize around the articulation between sexuality and money, on the one hand, and their social visibility, on the other hand

Full textThe aim of this research has been to investigate how during 2018 media have described causes of female prostitution and how these descriptions relate to earlier research on female prostitution. In order to fulfill the aims of the study a qualitative content analysis was carried out on 17 articles from Aftonbladet and DN. The result of this investigation has shown that newspaper articles express several different reasons for female prostitution that can be related to earlier research on prostitution. However there is an overstatement of causes with compelling character. Based on the sensational journalism theory, it is understood that these types of articles are overrepresented as they contain greater measure of sensation and higher news value. The results of the study are discussed from the theoretical agenda-setting perspective. It has been interpreted that the public's beliefs about causes of female prostitution are affected by reports in media about compelling causes.

Full textThe aim of the study was to learn more about women in prostitution, mainly about the process in and out of prostitution. Four books containing biographical material were read, three were written by the authors themselves and the fourth by two authors who interviewed female prostitutes. The empirical study was analyzed with thematic analysis and gender and stigma was used as theoretical perspectives and interpretation frames. The results showed that factors such as economics, traumatic events and self-hatred were the main reasons for entering prostitution, and that exiting prostitution was dependent on factors such as time, relationships and the treatment of society. The conclusion is that it is not a particular personality type that enters prostitution but it being due to several collaborative circumstances, therefore preventive efforts are important. It is also easier to quit with the help of someone, such as professional helpers.

Full textIn France prostitution does not fall into a specific legal framework. Subject to the political abolitionist regime of the New York Convention of December 2, 1949, people who prostitute themselves are bound by this ordinary law which restricts their practice. This limitation revolves around the principle of human dignity. Applied to prostitution, this tends to ensure social support, and specific protection supplemented by a repressive component. Since the enforcement of the act of April 13, 2016, this repression has applied to both pimps and clients of prostitutes. In theory, this legal treatment should enable people to get out of prostitution as well as its reduction, or even its disappearance. However, practice emphasizes the weaknesses of a law built according to an ideology which did not take into account the realities of prostitution revealed by sociology. Deprived of a part of their dignity, prostitutes find it difficult to access their rights, even the most fundamentals. As for those who wish to keep on, they do it outside of any legal framework.Going beyond the requirements of the abolitionist regime French law ignores further the consent of those who wish to engage in such activity and moves away from the imperative of repression of prostitution exploitation. In view of the evolution of prostitution practices a legal framework, outside the hygienic nature of the regulatory regime, must be considered. This is the subject of this study
