Abstract:
The paper shows that the author of a narrative text might interrupt the course of fictional action to express his view of the situation. The diachronic analysis of English emotive prose proves that the author is always present in the text, be it the 19C, 20C, or the beginning of the 21C. One of the topics of the author’s dialogue with the reader may cover peculiarities of the contemporary world. The problems discussed are very much the same in different time periods. The analysis of English novels shows that authors usually give evaluation of the surrounding world which is far from ideal and which is full of difficulties, obstacles and disappointments. The difference lies in the forms of address of the author to the reader. In the novels of the end of the 18C and the beginning of the 19C the author usually acts as a personage who speaks directly to the reader. That’s why forms of direct address and personal pronouns mark this period. At the end of the 20C – at the beginning of the 21C the author’s comments are more laconic and are usually presented in the form of a maxim. Time shift is characteristic of all time periods discussed.

Abstract:
The novelty of the work is in the fact that for the first time in I. A. Goncharov’s works study, the peculiarities of the poetics of the title in the works of I. A. Goncharov of small and medium genre epic forms, are examined. The relevance of the article is due to the fact that the study of the title, the identification of its typological models will allow to describe the patterns in the artistic system of I. A. Goncharov. A classification of the titles of the writer’s works written in non-novel genre forms is proposed. The classification is based on the dominant structural and semantic features of the titles of the writer’s non-novel fictional prose. The question of the semantics of titles is raised in the article, the attention is paid to their linguistic features. Some questions of the functional interaction of the title with the main text are considered. It is noted that the analysis of various types of titles in the works of I. A. Goncharov showed the importance of this component in the poetics of the writer. The author of the article comes to the conclusion that the analysis of the title allows not only to consider the position of the “total” author, but also to explore many aspects of the writer's poetics: frame text, subject matter, composition, genre, style, narrative system, language.

Abstract:
The article studies the specifics of the small prose of Ivan Nechuj-Levyczkyj (1838–1918). The focus is on the study of the genealogy of writing, including the variety of small epic forms presented by the writer’s legacy. The paper analyses the author’s reception, interpretation and reinterpretation of genres and genre varieties are covered, genre diffusion (travel essay, notes, sketching, anecdote, prose fable, satire, story, humorous, legend, fairy tale, phantasmagoria, tragic comedy, tragedy, fantasy). It explores the issues and topics of proscription (glorifying the beauty of nature of Ukraine, reflecting the whole world, depicting the life, customs and way of life of different ethnic groups that make up the Ukrainian people, external details and mentality, violations of local, state and human issues in a multi-level display – image, motive, plot, onomastics and toponymy), art and expressive means (metaphor, metonymy, numerous epithets, comparisons, concurrency, antithesis, gradation, symbol, humor, irony, satire, rhetorical constructions). The investigation elucidates the variability of the figure of the narrator (alter ego of the author, narrator/narrator, witness/participant of events, publicist, observator, historian, ethnographer). It accentuates the features of idiostyle (realism, elements of symbolism and impressionism; combination of deliberation and fiction, figurative polysemantics, auto-allusions, sensitivity, color symbolism, the reader as interlocutor and co-author on emotions, pictures, personification of being, intertextual inclusions).

Abstract:
The task is to study ethical legends considered as one of the specific genre varieties of the Adyghe historical prose. The relevance of the research is due to the urgent need to create a genre classification of the Adyghe non-fairytale prose. It is noted that in this regard, the study of ethical traditions is one of the necessary stages in solving this problem. The main goal of the article is to determine genre features and main functions, to identify the main motives and images inherent in ethical legends. Cultural-historical and comparative-historical research methods are used. The socio-historical conditions and factors that contributed to the emergence of the genre of ethical legends are analyzed, various groups of legends are identified, the process of transformation of moral and ethical principles and norms is traced, the most productive plot-forming motives are determined. It is shown that the differentiating feature of ethical traditions is their cognitive and socioregulatory functions. It is argued that their main goal is to represent ideal forms and standards of interpersonal behavior, which should contribute to the formation and approval of moral, ethical and etiquette norms that existed in the Adyghe traditional society.

Abstract:
The Menzerath–Altmann law on the relationship between the length of linguistic units and the length of their components is one of the important laws of quantitative linguistics. This law is a result of an advanced linguistic structures organization and is of great importance for the modern theory of language aimed at revealing the relations between qualitative features and quantitative parameters of the language. The validity of the Menzerath–Altmann law has been confirmed in a number of works on languages with different morphological structures. The main purpose of this paper is empirical testing of the Menzerath–Altmann law on the Tatar language with the help of various fiction texts (both poetry and prose). The distribution of word forms in the Tatar language by length, observed values of the average syllable length depending on the word length, average values of the syllable length predicted by the model, as well as the model parameters were investigated for the analyzed texts. To assess the goodness of fitting of the model, the coefficient of determination R2, which for different texts ranged from 0.676 to 0.999, was used. It was concluded that G. Altman’s formula is in good agreement with the data of the Tatar language. The model predicts not only the decreasing average syllable length with the increasing word length (function monotonicity), but also its subsequent increasing (change in the function monotonicity) for a number of texts.

Abstract:
The problem of the presentation of the Middle Eastern everyday life in the early prose of S.S. Kondurushkin (1874—1919), an active participant in the literary and social life of Russia at the turn of the XIX—XX centuries is examined in the article. On the basis of the essay cycle “From Wanderings in Syria” and other works of the early 1900s, an analysis of the methods of recreating the Middle Eastern everyday life is presented. The narrative strategies that underlie the Middle Eastern narrative of the Russian traveler are studied. This makes it possible to clarify the characteristics of the genre of the travel sketch in the general context of Russian literature at the turn of the century, which determines the scientific novelty and relevance of the article. The authors examine in detail the essays “Greeks in Palestine and Syria”, “Terra incognita”, “La Bayadere”, “Akulina in Tripoli”. The consistent change of the exposing discourse of political journal-ism to various forms of “ethnographic” narrative are substantiated in the article. The tasks set required the use of traditional methods of academic literary criticism, as well as techniques of cultural linguistics, imagology, imperial and colonial studies. A number of archival materials are introduced into scientific circulation, in particular, letters from N.K. Mikhailovsky addressed to S.S.Kondurushkin.

Abstract:
The Paris Psalter (Bibliothèque Nationale de France, lat. 8824) has attracted much interest because of its long, thin format, its illustrations in the Utrecht Psalter tradition and its Old English prose translation of the first fifty psalms, which has been convincingly attributed to King Alfred himself. It is a bilingual psalter, with Latin (Roman version) on the left and Old English on the right. The first fifty psalms are in the prose translation connected with King Alfred, the remainder in a metrical version made by an author whose work has not been identified elsewhere. The leaves are approximately 526 × 186 mm, with a writing space of about 420 × 95 mm. It has been estimated that there were originally 200 leaves in twenty-five quires, but fourteen leaves, including those carrying all the major decoration, have been removed. There remain thirteen outline drawings integrated into the text on the first six folios. Some drawings may have functioned as ‘fillers’ where the Latin text was shorter than the Old English. Further on in the manuscript, in order to solve this problem, the scribe either left gaps or made the columns of Latin thinner than the corresponding Old English ones. The Old English introductions were set out across both columns, suggesting that the book was made for someone who read English more easily than Latin. The manuscript was written around the middle of the eleventh century, and it is clearly the work of a single skilled scribe who used a neat Anglo-Caroline minuscule for the Latin texts, and matching English vernacular minuscule with many Caroline letter forms for the Old English. Unfortunately, his hand has not been identified in any other books or charters; however, he did record in a colophon (186r; see pl.V) that he was called Wulfwinus cognomento Cada.

Abstract:
An intersubjective event, a text comprises the medium of contact between subjects of literary discourse. Within texts the conventionality of speech serves to enable us to express ourselves, while at the same time it-owing to conventionality itself-makes shared individual expe rience at least difficult, if not impossible, a condition of which modern literary culture is painfully aware. Epitomizing this paradox of the uniquely personal and the formulaic/ impersonal is the literary discourse of love. In post-Romantic literary culture this paradox reveals itself in the shift of authors’ and readers’ attention from accepted rhetorical forms to those “transitive parts” of thought and speech that (according to William James) pass largely unrecognized in everyday language practice. Precisely these “transitive parts” activate the fleeting “feelings of relation” (as opposed to conventional meanings) that connote extended and multiple relationships “between the larger objects of our thought.” We argue that this authorreader pact-evinced, variously, by Flaubert’s search for “absolute style” and Barthes’ exploration of the aesthetic potential of lovers’ discourse-heightens attention to the materiality of language and to the mimetic, collaborative, performative aspects of literary communication. “The zealous practice of a perfect reception” invokes enhanced pleasure and the empathic effect that (post)modern readers learn to derive from language play by locating the subtle subjectivity of expression in the seemingly style-less banality of everyday speech. In this article this textual strategy of literary modernism is analyzed by way of selfreflexive love speech in the prose of Gustav Flaubert and the poetry of William Carlos Williams.

Abstract:
Text comprehension will suffer if the readability level is not accessible to the students. Readability formulas predict text complexity, assisting in appropriate text selection that complements students’ reading abilities to improve their language development. Therefore, the study aims to find out the reading index of the prose forms in the literature component catered to lower secondary school students ages 13 and 14 years old in Form One (seventh grade) and Form Two (eighth grade) classrooms in Malaysia. The reading index is measured by using four readability formulas which are Dale-Chall, Fog, SMOG, and Flesch-Kincaid that focuses on the words, sentences, syllables, and polysyllable words. These formulas are used to predict the level of difficulty of the prose forms. The reading index calculated from these readability formulas reveals the grade level of the prose forms. The grade level indicates the best age for reading and understanding the prose forms. Two prose forms were chosen as samples in the study. A passage is chosen from each prose form to be uploaded using the online tool. The indices obtained from the readability formulas predicted that both of the prose forms were below students’ reading age. The study implicates reading index must be taken into consideration in literary texts selection because it is an indicator of the years of education that an individual requires to comprehend the literary text clearly. Suitable reading material at students’ age level can enhance literature learning and teaching in the ESL classroom.

Abstract This article opens with a reflection on the extrinsic and intrinsic causes of the neglect of Chinese prose in sinological literary studies, followed by the construction of a patterning-based scheme for codifying Chinese prose forms. An in-depth analysis of eight famous texts, drawn from antiquity through the Qing, reveals how continual innovations in extratextual patterning and textual patterning have given rise to manifold and inherently related prose forms over the millennia. The close reading also sheds light on these prose forms' distinctive artistic features, as well as their symbiotic relationships with the three types of genres (narrative, descriptive, and expository) and with broad sociopolitical and cultural developments. It is hoped that these findings will generate serious interest in prose studies among literary sinologists.

The article examines the creative experience of Boris Rakhmanin as a prose writer who developed new forms of synthesis in Russian prose of the 1960s - 1980s. The distinctive techniques that he experimented with contributed to the lyricisation of prose. The originality in the author's definition of the genre indicated the author's special line of thought, Boris Rakhmanin's techniques originate in prose experiments at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries (Andrei Bely, Evgeny Zamyatin, etc.) and dialogue with contemporaries (Eduardas Mieželaitis, Justinas Marcinkevičius). Analysis of the resource of synthesis methods used by Boris Rakhmanin in his prose allows us to point out their functionality in creating an image of the life and an image of the thought process of the writer's contemporaries. This analysis also gives an idea of the individual style of the writer.

AbstractCritics have long wondered about the setting and intent of the Old English translation of Boethius's De consolatione philosophiae, first into prose and then into prosimetrum. This article situates the dual translation within the broader context of ninth- and tenth-century literary culture, challenging the received view of the two versions as separate projects and arguing instead that the Old English Boethius was conceived and received as a vernacular opus geminatum, or ‘twinned work’. While the opus geminatum and the prosimetrum are generally thought to maintain distinct generic identities, this case study allows for a more capacious understanding of both modes, which I demonstrate were inescapably linked in Anglo-Saxon circles – and which were shaped by a broader aesthetic of prose-verse mixture.

This article highlights the intersection of realism and postmodernism of the 20th century and the hypertextuality of Tatiana Tolstoy's prose. The purpose of the article is to study the poetics of mythological prose, methods and forms of mythologization in modern Russian prose. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that this article seeks to consistently explore not only the myth, but also the mechanisms of mythologization and demythologization in Tolstoy's prose, as well as to identify the axiological and ontological features of mythology in the writer's texts. The theoretical significance of the article consists in the further development of theoretical knowledge about the categories of mythopoetics, the deepening of ideas about the mythologism of literature and the genre features of the mythological novel. The practical significance of the article lies in the fact that its materials can be used in lecture courses and seminars on the history of modern literature, the theory of myth, as well as in the works on T. Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents a treebank-based study of the effect the text form (prose vs. verse) has on the course of two grammatical changes in Medieval French: the loss of null subjects and the loss of OV word order. By means of statistical analysis, we demonstrate that naive estimates of the spread of overt subjects and VO orders give the impression that there is a significant difference between the rates of development in prose vs. verse. By contrast, estimates based on an abstract grammar competition model which distinguishes between grammar-ambiguous surface forms (overt personal subjects, null subjects in coordination contexts) and grammar-unambiguous surface forms (overt expletive subjects, null subjects in non-coordination contexts) show prose-verse parallelism, prose having an earlier change onset, in line with traditional intuitions. At a more general level, these results suggest that the product of the interaction of a particular grammar with universal pragmatic laws is constant, which can be observed if the factors responsible for variation in grammatical choices are controlled for.

Abstract:
In two recent studies we have examined the prose rhythms in the clausulae of late imperial Latin authors. We found two clausular systems to be prevalent, thecursusand thecursus mixtus. Thecursusinvolves the use of accentual rhythms and consists of three basic cadences:planus, tardus, andvelox. Thecursus mixtushas been defined by modern scholars as a type of prose rhythm in which the clausula is structured along both accentual and metrical lines, that is by the combination of one of the three forms of thecursuswith one of the standard metrical forms derived from Cicero's system — cretic-spondee, dicretic, cretic-tribrach, or ditrochee.

Abstract:
In my study, I intend to examine and compare the different forms, manifestations, causes and treatments of insania in Celsus’ De Medicina and in Seneca’s Medea alongside with his prose works. Seneca’s tragedies – just like his prose works – present a deep interest in the psychological states of their characters. One of the best examples is Medea, which is a drama of passion, madness and the destructive forces in the soul. Comparing the tragedy with Celsus’ De Medicina, a nearly contemporary encyclopedic prose text on medical theory and practice, I intend to demonstrate that philosophical and medical understandings of madness interact at some level.

Abstract:
This paper takes a corpus-based approach to the study of vocative and diminutive forms in the prose fiction and drama of the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. In such texts, the coexistence, and indeed the coalescence, of Scots and (Scottish Standard) English is one of the most important traits in their author’s distinctive style. The aim is to assess whether the use of diminutive forms together with vocative ones may constitute a syntactic unit in which semantic and pragmatic values are mutually reinforced. In addition to a specially-compiled corpus of Stevenson’s texts, the investigation will consider occurrences of the same structure in the imaginative prose section of the <em>Corpus of Modern Scottish Writing</em>, which will be used as a control corpus.

Abstract:
Contraction forms in English are mostly occur in speech and informal writing and they are generally avoided in formal writing types such as academic prose, business reports and journal articles, therefore, most teachers discourage their use in academic essays (Biber, Johansonn, Leech, Conrad and Finegan 1999). Contractions in English have two types; negative contractions (isn’t, haven’t, doesn’t) and verb contractions (I’m, they’ve, that’s). This corpus based study attempts to investigate contraction usage in learner and native English speaker essays. Major goal is to examine whether learners consider essay writing rules in respect of contractions which are accepted inappropriate for academic prose style. Five corpora, three learner and two native English, were utilized in order to analyze verb and not-contraction forms. Frequency calculations of contraction forms in each corpus compared via log-likelihood measurement for statistical significance. Results revealed that learners use considerably more contraction forms, especially negative ones, than native English students in their argumentative essays. Keywords: English for Academic Purposes, learner corpus, contractions

Abstract:
The article studies the poetics of the contemporary writer Yuriy Buyda in the context of the contemporary Russian short story. The analysis of historically specific forms of Buyda’s cyclization is considered as part of the general tasks of historical poetics in studying the evolution of literary forms. Structural and semiotic analysis of the writer’s works reveals that his prose forms peculiar cycles-clusters, ‘archipelagos’, where a cycle of stories appears to be related to novels. This connection is primarily determined by the setting, but also by recurring heroes and a specific – cumulative rather than cyclical – plot that traces its origin to myth. Through the example of one such cluster of texts – the cycles Zhungli, Gates of Zhungli (Vrata Zhungley) (2011), Lions and Lilies (L’vy i Lilii) (2013), the novel Blue Blood (Sinyaya krov’) and related works – the paper investigates the nature and logic of the depicted world, the mechanisms of its intra-textual connections, as well as the genesis due to both the nature of the author’s artistic thinking and the social, historical and literary, biographical context. Thus, we can observe a tendency of transcending the genre boundaries of a story or novel in favor of hypertext rhizomatic formations – based on mythologizing strategies. These features correlate with the general interest of contemporary Russian literature in collections of short stories, on the one hand, and the contemporary novel’s leaning to disintegration of a single narrative and fragmentation, on the other. It is possible that the tendencies toward hypertext strategies for text generation are determined by the general properties of modern thinking and social communication since today the social morphology of society is built in the form of networks.

Abstract:
The question of the role, forms and functions of fragmentation of modern artistic narra tive is considered. The results of the analy sis of the fragmentary narrative of the works of contemporary English-speaking authors (J. Barnes, D. Mitchell, M. Cunningham, I. Banks, J. Franzen, S. Faulks, J. Eugenides, A. Smith, J. McGregor and others) are presented. The relevance of the study is due to the fact that in the modern literature of the postmodernist direction, nonlinearity of narration, deliberate mixing of temporal, local, descriptive and other layers are becoming widespread, practically becoming the norm. The novelty of the research is seen in the fact that the fragmentation of a literary text is studied at different levels — compositional, content-thematic, plot, ideological-figurative, genre, narrative, chronotopic. It has been proved that the forms of implementation of fragmentariness are quite diverse: irregular division of the text, heterogeneity of themes and ideas, lack of linear development of the plot, combination of elements of different genres, the presence of internal polystylism, the use of different types of narration and narrator, violation of the unity of the chronotope. The analysis of specific material showed that the functions of a fragmentary narrative are determined by each specific context, the leading ones being the impact on the reader, the management of his attention, the placement of accents according to the writer's intention, the creation of the impression of authenticity and reliability.

Abstract:
AbstractAn influential article published in 1974 by Avi Hurvitz argues that the language of the Prose Tale of Job (Job 1:1-2:13; 42:7-17) is incompatible with a date prior to the exile. Hurvitz's suggested Late Biblical Hebrew (LBH) linguistic forms are examined, and while some forms are rejected, Hurvitz's judgement that the Prose Tale contains LBH linguistic elements is found to be correct. However, these do not occur in a sufficient accumulation for the text to be considered LBH according to Hurvitz's own methodology, but rather the accumulation is consistent with a classification as Early Biblical Hebrew (EBH). This conclusion has no chronological implications, however, since EBH and LBH represent not two chronological phases but co-existing styles of Hebrew in the post-exilic and quite possibly pre-exilic periods.

Abstract:
The semiotic-word-forming practices of national writing as one of the most defi ning forms of expression of the spiritual creativity of Ukrainians have been recognized in the discursive space of Ukrainian language textbooks. In our research, we have demonstrated how contemporary Ukrainian prose unfolds its discursiveness in the space of textbooksʼ creation that is relevant today, textbooksʼ creation which is «here – and – now» presenting in the practice of modern Ukrainian schools. In our article, fi rst of all we have indicated what names contemporary Ukrainian prose represents in current textbooks of Ukrainian language (diff erent collectives), we have shown that in the process of studying Ukrainian language prose remains one of the main sources of emotional influence on the student. Having analyzed four school textbooks, we have come to the conclusion that the communicative levels of conceptualization of contemporary prose in contemporary textbooks of the Ukrainian language directly correspond to socio-cultural paradigms of linguistics as a factor of the historical, cultural and social being of the Ukrainian people. Representing contemporary prose, the authors of the textbooks represent a whole new wave of Ukrainian cultural revival, realized to the greatest extent in writing.

Abstract:
The article analyses interpretation of Joseph Roth prose in the context of intertextuality as a literary means. It is determined by the author’s strategy and studied the aesthetic issues that are fundamental to his work. Intertextuality proves a postmodern phenomenon of reinterpretation of classic and new texts, giving them new meanings and establishing parallels with modern literature, which is reflected in an adequate interpretation of their genre and stylistic forms, the interpretation of philosophical concepts, iconic fictional and aesthetic phenomena. So in fiction there is an additional dimension – intercultural component of the artistic world of the text. This theoretical approach is extremely productive, especially in the study of works of those authors; the arts are rooted in different spheres of human existence, formed on the border of their own cultures, languages, historical and national traditions. A good representative of “intercultural” narrative strategy is Joseph Roth. Thus, under conditions of intertextual interaction, the literary work becomes part of a broad intertextual space that covers not only literary, but also outside of literature forms of expression, and any text is in various “dialogical” relations with other texts that fill this space with different language codes that are represented in this space.

Abstract:
The article studiesthe lexical and semantic features of the anthroponyms in the modern English prose discourse, basing on the material of The Mortal Instruments, series of six young adult fantasy novels, written by Cassandra Claire. The work presents origin analysis of the characters` names and surnames presented in the books, and the ways of their interpretation. Particular attention was paid to the information and stylistic functionality of onyms and their impact on the reader’s knowledge of the inner world of the characters. We proved the connection between the choice of one’s own name and the character’s behavior, his or her actions and a complex socio-psychological portrait; and determined the interdependence between the use of different forms of the name, its short forms or complete replacement, from the metamorphoses that occur with the characters during the development of the plot line of the novel. The work studies the notion of allusion as a kind of intertextuality through the collaboration of biblical and mythological motives, which in turn contributed not only to the specifics of the names` choice of some characters, but also determined their role and order of decisions. It is emphasized the importance of in-depth study of anthroponyms in modern English prose, taking into account the diversity of their role within the work of art, the ability to reflect the culture and social life of society, focusing on the hidden symbolism and literary heritage of a culture and country in general. Keywords: anthroponyms, onyms, onomastics, intertextuality, modern English prose discourse, proper names.

Abstract:
The article touches upon the study of the pilgrimage plot in the works of modern Bashkir prose writers, which is presented in two directions: visiting local shrines and Hajj to Mecca. Various existing forms of pilgrimage, as an integral part of many religions, continue to arouse the interest of both researchers and writers. The plot of the pilgrimage to the local sites in the trilogy of F. Galimov and the book of L.-A. Yakshibayeva has parallels with the religious traditions of the Muslims of Central Asia, where Sufism was one of the forms of Islam. The plot-forming element of the Hajj pilgrimage is the real geographical places of the sacred land that form the sacred space and connect the mortal world with the eternal in the minds of believers. The carefully thought-out integral composition of the story by T. Dayanova, and the novel by L.-A. Yakshibayeva includes events where the lives of the characters are intertwined with the fates of the characters of religious legends from the history and culture of Islam, which reveal the internal laws of the development of the main characters of the works and determine the role of Islam in human life.
