Abstract:
This chapter examines the pros and cons of interfering in the labour market via the promulgation of anti-discrimination laws. It evaluates the basic theoretical constructs which are relevant to a proper understanding of anti-discrimination law in the UK and the EU, including the possible policy responses (e.g. the distinction between formal equality and substantive equality). It briefly assesses the historical development of anti-discrimination laws in the workplace, and then analyses key statutory concepts such as direct discrimination, indirect discrimination, harassment, sexual harassment. Finally, the chapter considers victimization—an important issue since there is little purpose in statutory concepts if the employer can intimidate the employee from bringing or continuing proceedings on one of these bases by subjecting him/her to retaliation.

Brown, Catherine, and Susan Reid, eds. The Edinburgh Companion to D. H. Lawrence and the Arts. Edinburgh University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474456623.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book includes twenty-eight chapters by specialists from across the arts, reassessing Lawrence’s relationship to aesthetic categories and specific art forms in their historical and critical contexts. A new picture of Lawrence as a multi-disciplinary artist emerges, expanding from traditional areas of enquiry in prose and poetry into the fields of drama, painting, music, dance, sculpture, architecture, historiography, life writing and queer and Biblical aesthetics. The Companion explores topics such as Lawrence’s politics in his art, his representations of technology, his practice of revising and rewriting, his manifold modes of performance, and the relationship between his criticism and creation of prose, poetry and painting. Investigation of Lawrence’s engagements with the work and themes of his fellow modernists represents him as more ‘modernist’ and less anti-aesthetic than has hitherto been the case; and his attitudes towards the working-classes, and anticipation of the ideas of the Frankfurt School, modern ecocriticism and queer theory, are presented as revealing him to be more progressive than has previously been recognised. This interdisciplinary Companion also makes a strong case for Lawrence’s continuing aesthetic power, as represented by case studies of his afterlives in biofiction, cinema, musical settings and portraiture.

Abstract:

Bowen, A. J. Plutarch: The Malice of Herodotos. Liverpool University Press, 1992. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9780856685682.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Malice of Herodotus can perhaps best be described as the world's earliest known book review. But it is much more than that, for in the course of 'correcting' with considerable vituperation what he saw as Herodotus' anti-Greek bias, Plutarch tells us much about his own attitude to writing history. So that together with Lucian's How to Write History, it forms a basic text for the study of Greek historiography. It is also perhaps the most revealing example of Plutarch's prose style with its rhetorical variety and energy and odd mixture of good and bad argument. But in citing lost works, Plutarch has preserved valuable fragments which don't exist elsewhere and need to be assessed by all students of the Persian Wars. The book presents Greek text with translation, introduction and commentary.

Nemmers, Adam. American Modern(ist) Epic. Liverpool University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9781949979664.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
American Modern(ist) Epic argues that during the 1920s and ‘30s a cadre of minority novelists revitalized the classic epic form in an effort to recast the United States according to modern, diverse, and pluralistic grounds. Rather than adhere to the reification of static culture (as did ancient verse epic), in their prose epics Gertrude Stein and John Dos Passos utilized recursion, bricolage, and polyphony to represent the multifarious immediacy and movement of the modern world. Meanwhile, H. T. Tsiang and Richard Wright created absurd and insipid anti-heroes for their epics, contesting the hegemony of Anglo and capitalist dominance in the United States. In all, I posit, these modern(ist) epic novels undermined and revised the foundational ideology of the United States, contesting notions of individualism, progress, and racial hegemony while modernizing the epic form in an effort to refound the nation. The marriage of this classical form to modernist principles produced transcendent literature and offered a strenuous challenge to the interwar status quo, yet ultimately proved a failure: longstanding American ideology was simply too fixed and widespread to be entirely dislodged.

Kahn, Aaron M., ed. The Oxford Handbook of Cervantes. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198742913.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Although best known the world over for his masterpiece novel, Don Quixote de la Mancha, published in two parts in 1605 and 1615, the antics of the would-be knight-errant and his simple squire only represent a fraction of the trials and tribulations, both in the literary world and in society at large, of this complex man. Poet, playwright, soldier, slave, satirist, novelist, political commentator, and literary outsider, Cervantes achieved a minor miracle by becoming one of the rarest of things in the early modern world of letters: an international best-seller during his lifetime, with his great novel being translated into multiple languages before his death in 1616. The principal objective of the Oxford Handbook of Cervantes is to create a resource in English that provides a fully comprehensive overview of the life, works, and influences of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547–1616). This volume contains seven sections, exploring in depth Cervantes’s life and how the trials, tribulations, and hardships endured influenced his writing. Cervantistas from numerous countries, including the United Kingdom, Spain, Ireland, the United States, Canada, and France offer their expertise with the most up-to-date research and interpretations to complete this wide-ranging, but detailed, compendium of a writer not known for much other than his famous novel outside of the Spanish-speaking world. This handbook explores his famous novel Don Quixote, his other prose works, his theatrical output, his poetry, his sources, influences, and contemporaries, and finally reception of his works over the last four hundred years.

Mason, Emma. Christina Rossetti. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198723691.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Christina Rossetti: Poetry, Ecology, Faith suggests that the life and works of Christina Rossetti offer a commentary on the relationship between Christianity and ecology. It counters readings of her as a withdrawn or apolitical poet by reading her Anglo-Catholic faith in the context of her commitment to the nonhuman. Rossetti considered the doctrines and ideas associated with the Catholic Revival to be revelatory of an ecology of creation in which all things, material and immaterial, human and nonhuman, divine and embodied, are interconnected. The book focuses on her close attention to the Bible, the Church Fathers, and Francis of Assisi to show how her poetry, prose, and letters refused the nineteenth-century commodification of creation and declared it as a new and shared reality kept in eternal flux by the nondual love of the Trinity. In chapters on her early involvement in the Oxford Movement, her relationship to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Franciscan commitment to the diversity of plant and animal life through her anti-vivisection activism, and green reading of the apocalypse as transformative rather than destructive, the book traces an ecological love command in her writing, one she considered it a Christian duty to fulfil. It illuminates Rossetti’s at once sensitive and keenly ethical readings of the place of flora and fauna, stars and planets, humans and angels in creation, and is also the first study of its kind to argue for the centrality of spiritual materialism in her work, one driven by a prevenient and green grace.

Simpson, Gerry. The Sentimental Life of International Law. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780192849793.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Sentimental Life of International Law is about our age-old longing for a decent international society and the ways of seeing, being and speaking that might help us consummate that longing. This book treats international law as an experience, a language and an aspiration. It is the culmination of a decade of thinking about the practice of international lawyering (in classrooms, at conferences, in treaty negotiation) and the modes of thinking and being that naturalise that practice. In particular, it asks both how we might engage in a professional practice that has become, to adapt a title of Janet Malcolm’s, not just impossible but also difficult; and whether we might be disabled by the governing idioms of international lawyering and, then, importantly, re-enabled, by speaking different sorts of international law or by speaking international law in different sorts of ways. It tries to answer that question by making the effort to discern or, better still, to bring to the surface international law’s hidden literary prose or its redemptive enclaves, and it does so in a series of chapters on international law’s bathetic underpinnings, its friendly relations, the neurotic foundations of its underlying social order, its screened-off comic dispositions, its anti-method, and the life-worlds of its practitioners, and then, finally in a chapter in which international law is re-envisioned through the practice of gardening. All of this done in the hope of offering a contribution to the project of making international law, again, a compelling language for our times.
