Kalyuzhnaya, T. V. "Propositional-Frame Approach to the Description of Families of Russian Cognate Words as a Representation of Mental Discourse." Bulletin of Kemerovo State University 21, no. 1 (May 29, 2019): 205–11. http://dx.doi.org/10.21603/2078-8975-2019-21-1-205-211.

Abstract:
The research features families of cognate words in the Russian language as a dynamic phenomenon. Frame and proposition were adopted as the basic units of representation of word families. The study focused on derivatives with the borrowed formants -атор/-тор (-ator/-tor). Most of the propositions with -атор revealed a high degree of typification. This typification of propositions undergoes changes under the influence of the tendencies of the Russian linguistic system and as a result of assimilation. The mutation occurs both by changing the actants in the proposition, as well as by expanding the actant paradigm and the appearance of new members in the proposition. Assimilation results in polysemic potency derivatives. Occasional meanings of the analyzed derivatives form a new family with a typified frame structure. The nests are divided into propositions typical for similar families, with the same limited set of actants. The propositional-frame approach to the description of the families of cognate words makes it possible to express the knowledge of native speakers about the world, as well as to represent the epistemological basis of mental discourse.

Abstract:
Deductive reasoning, or deduction, is one of the two basic types of logical inference. Deductive reasoning means a kind of reasoning in which the truth of conclusion (the output proposition) is logically guaranteed by the truth of the premises (the input proposition). This study has aimed to evaluate university students’ critical thinking ability of making and recognizing deductions. To explore this aim, the present study has set two research objectives which include to know university students’ attitude towards the critical thinking skill of deduction making and to evaluate university students’ performance in the critical thinking skill of deduction making. To achieve these objectives, the researcher has used quantitative research methodology. The participants of this study consist of 550 male and female university students of different state-run colleges of Punjab (Pakistan). Critical thinking inventory (CTI) and Watson-Glaser’s Critical Thinking Appraisal (WGCTA) (2002) have been used to collect data from the subjects of the study. The researcher used SPSS (XX) to analyze the collected data. The findings of this study reveal that the university students have highly positive attitude towards critical thinking skill of making deductions but their level of critical thinking and their ability to reflect critical thinking in their test of making deductions does not correspond with their attitude towards this skill of critical thinking.

Abstract:
The pH of water is different in different areas. So, the washing machines which are based on Fuzzy Logic Controller being used in different areas are deprived of useful results because these machines cannot detect the pH of water. When pH of water is other than 7, more detergent and washing time for laundry is consumed. The proposition of the paper is that neutral water (pH = 7) should be used in washing machines. It will reduce the washing time. In this way, energy and washing time can be saved. The impersonate results and the action of the aforementioned device have been done by fuzzy logic toolbox using MATLAB.

Abstract:
Objectives. To compare the association of California Proposition 56 (Prop 56), which increased the cigarette tax by $2 per pack beginning on April 1, 2017, with smoking behavior among low- and high-income adults. Methods. Drawing on a sample of 17 206 low-income and 21 324 high-income adults aged 21 years or older from the 2012 to 2018 California Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data, we explored 2 outcomes: current smoking prevalence and smoking intensity (average number of cigarettes per day among current smokers). For each income group, we estimated a multivariable logistic regression to analyze the association of Prop 56 with smoking prevalence and a multivariable linear regression to analyze the association of Prop 56 with smoking intensity. Results. Although we observed no association between smoking intensity and Prop 56, we found a statistically significant decline in smoking prevalence among low-income adults following Prop 56. No such association was found among the high-income group. Conclusions. Given that low-income Californians smoke cigarettes at greater rates than those with higher incomes, our results provide evidence that Prop 56 is likely to reduce income disparities in cigarette smoking in California.

Abstract:
The article presents the teaching of St. Augustine on priesthood – priests, their attitudes and commitment on pastoral work. Bishop of Hippo’s commentaries on the excerpts from the Gospel of John (J 10, 1-17; J 21, 15-17) are basis for the elaboration. Bishop of Hippo indicates that every priest receives his calling from Christ, the Good Shepherd. Thus, he ought to follow Christ and have absolute trust in Him, believing that without God’s grace he can do nothing in his pastoral work. What appears to be especially interesting is St. Augustine’s proposition that even the ministry of an unworthy priest – the evangelical mercenary – can be of a great benefit to the faithful, provided that they will not follow in his footsteps, but merely fulfill the proclaimed Word of God. In the commentaries one can see St. Augustine as a sophisticated exegete, but above all as a zealous priest of the lay faithful and a formation advisor.

Abstract:
The proposition concerning the relationship between job satisfaction and customer satisfaction is not novel in organizational behaviour research. The profound impact of job satisfaction in improving organizational productivity through satisfied and retained customers is well documented. The present study attempts to assess the relationship between job satisfaction and customer satisfaction from the employees' point of view in the Indian banking industry, an approach that is unique to the study. The relationship between an employee and the customer is of utmost importance, especially in the service sector industry like banking. Relevant statistical tools (using SPSS) were applied to a sample of 542 employees of commercial banks. The results confirmed a positive relationship between the two constructs. Thus, when employees are satisfied with their job, they perceive that they deliver superior service, thus making their customers happy and satisfied. Consequently, they will recommend their organization to others, thereby improving revenues. Exploring further, the study also tested some demographic variables with respect to job satisfaction and concluded that employees' level of management, and type of bank they work for, had a significant relationship, while age did not show any significant relationship with job satisfaction.

AbstractIt is proposed that the priestly story of Aaron’s flowering staff (Num 17:16-26) is an etiology for the asherah in Solomon’s temple (2 Kgs 21:3, 7; 23:4, 6, 7). The staff as described is closely similar both in form and in function to the asherah. This proposition accounts for the absence of hostility towards asherim in the priestly literature, and it generates a solution to the age-old problem of why Moses and Aaron were denied entry into the promised land (Num 20:1-13, 24; 27:14; Deut 32:51).

Our research used the Deese/Roediger and McDermott paradigm [1] to examine the effects of hypnosis on memory. The paradigm yielded a high rate of false recognition (>.70), regardless of whether participants were hypnotized or not. Hypnotized ( N = 21) and non-hypnotized ( N = 20) participants reported high false recognition rates and were very confident in their remembrances, independent of their recognition accuracy and their level of hypnotic suggestibility (medium vs. high). Although our results provide no support for the proposition that hypnosis is a viable memory enhancement procedure, hypnosis did not impair recognition above and beyond the non-hypnotic condition.

Abstract:
When attempting to assess what history of science, doubtless an important element of our culture, owes to the French philosopher and scientist Pierre Duhem, one has to emphasise the critical role he played in rethinking the world outlook inherited from the preceding times and in developing a new one more apt to contemporary science. This analysis draws on such key Duhem’s writings as «The World System» («Le système du monde») and «Studies on Leonardo da Vinci» («Études sur Léonard de Vinci»). Two Duhem’s theses deserve particular attention. One is his assertion that Christianity (and the Catholic Church for that) did not impede, but rather contributed to the development of science having dispensed with cosmological assumptions of Greek Paganism incompatible with contemporary science. Secondly, Duhem argues that intuitions to pave way to the scientific revolution were first advocated by such Sorbonne Scholastics as Jean Buridan and Nicholas Oresme. It is noteworthy that the French scientist clearly underestimates the contribution of non-French thinkers to the emerging set of cultural axioms. Duhem’s new ontology of cognition is closely related to the ideas of new epistemology. Viewing evolution of science as a gradual continuous process, he endorsed the holist idea that isolated scientific propositions could neither be verified nor falsified. The truth of any proposition is inseparable from the truth of the system of hypotheses as a whole. Hence science progresses not by rejecting old theories, but by modifying them: in due course old concepts give way to new ones. This topical assumption that progress of science is to be viewed and understood in its specific socio-cultural context delineates the principle on which the answer to the no less topical question of the philosophy of culture, viz. why modern science has emerged in Europe rather than elsewhere, is to be based on.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT IMPACT: The successful conversion of an in-person biomedical research commercialization education course to a fully virtual and flipped experience (self-paced) allows greater participation from faculty investigators at CTSA institutions and serves as a model for similar educational programs intended to accelerate the translation of biomedical innovations to products of impact. OBJECTIVES/GOALS: Due to COVID-19, University of Michigan’s Fast Forward Medical Innovation developed new educational resources and leveraged virtual learning tools to convert a successful in-person research commercialization course to a fully virtual, flipped format and evaluated the effectiveness of the converted course compared to the in-person equivalent. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Two novel interactive modules (intellectual property and FDA regulation) and five instructional videos (customer discovery, value proposition, opportunity sizing, target product profile, and patent searches) were developed while Constant Contact and Zoom were used for a weekly progression of content delivery and to flip the course: (1) forming/testing value propositions, (2) intellectual property, (3) regulatory, (4) medical reimbursement, (5) business case development. A total of 32 faculty and graduate students completed the virtual, flipped course and submitted a post-course evaluation. Results of the converted course were compared to evaluation results from the in-person course. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: Open rates for the weekly email content were: (1)61%, (2)67%, (3)65%, (4)67%, and (5)59 %. Total views for the modules and videos were: IP-28, regulation-19, customer discovery-62, value proposition-21, opportunity sizing-66, target product profile-11, and patent searches-29. Evaluation results from the virtual course (n=22) were compared to mean results from the 5 previous in-person courses (n=42); 86% of virtual course respondents stated the course met the objectives compared to 85% of in-person respondents; 87% of virtual respondents stated the course met their expectations compared to 100% of in-person; 87% of virtual respondents said they would participate in a follow-up program compared to 94% in-person; 91% of virtual respondents would recommend the course to others compared to 97% of in-person. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF FINDINGS: Email open rates and content views suggest positive flipped participation. Overall, the converted course was comparable to the in-person course at meeting objectives, suggesting the virtual format is effective at delivering the course content and holds the potential for engaging a broader audience.

Abstract:

Abstract:
After entering the new century, people are facing a new external environment. Recently human society is coming into knowledge economy era, and the industrial structure has deeply been adjusted. Today, the past teaching method of imparting knowledge and getting people to accept education, or exam-oriented teaching ideas have been unable to keep up with the needs of the development of the Times. In the future, the key point of education is to promote people to understand the knowledge, and grasp rules between things. Based on this, it is particularly necessary for the talents cultivation to adopt a new idea of training. Abstract I test the proposition that interest groups achieve greater policy success when they lobby during the agency guidance document development process as opposed to the notice and comment process. Policymaking via guidance documents often receives lower levels of public attention, which provides greater flexibility to accommodate lobbying requests. I analyze the hypothesis during the creation of 41 rules by one US government agency—20 of which were promulgated using the notice and comment process and 21 via the guidance document process. I measure regulatory policy change using a content analysis of government documents and lobbying texts, and I also incorporate a telephone survey of interest groups who lobbied on these same rules. I find that interest groups perceive—and achieve—greater policy success when lobbying during the agency guidance process. The results yield new insights into the relationship between lobbying and regulatory policymaking.

Abstract:
Over a million cases of infected people, thresholds and dramatic records constantly exceeded, the voices of the State and of the civil society covering each other in search of validation, an alienated and disoriented population – this is the general picture of a Romanian society trying, on one side, to understand a global phenomenon and, on the other side, to adapt to situations, norms and regulations that has not been encountered for generations. In an effervescent social, economic and political context, the Coronavirus pandemic tests the whole society and forces the State to react, both through concrete measures (rules, restrictions) and through education and awareness campaigns. The official messages transmitted by the State, through the media and in the form of commercials, advertisements, are subject to an evolution in visual and verbal aspect, which can be questioned both in terms of philosophical theories such as utilitarianism or social contract, and from the semiotic perspective of the meanings carried by these messages. How is the "common good" found in the education and awareness campaigns for wearing protective masks and for frequent sanitation and disinfection? And if Rousseau's "common good" is not fully visible in the mask that "can save your life," is the general goal of the government campaign one of a utilitarian nature? To what extent does the promise of the presence of pleasure and the absence of pain appear, as described by John Stuart Mill, in a campaign built on "saving lives" and "protecting others"? This research advances the proposition of a perception analysis of the meanings conveyed in the television commercials from the official awareness and education campaign regarding the Coronavirus pandemic, between March 2020 and January 2021, decanted in terms of basic semiotic and philosophical concepts and theories.

Butia (Arecaceae) is a palm genus of 21 South American species. The factors that determine the geographical distribution and conservation status of Butia species are still poorly understood. We mapped the specimens with a natural occurrence in South America and evaluated the state of conservation of the species and their respective threat criteria. These results allowed the proposition of priorities for in situ and ex situ conservation. Eleven species were evaluated as Vulnerable (VU), five species as Critically Endangered (CR), three species as Endangered (EN), one species was assessed as Near Threatened (NT) and one species could not be assessed due to Deficient Data (DD). Eight priorities for in situ conservation are recognized and seven species are considered as priorities for ex situ conservation and germplasm collection. The results support the choice of priority areas for in situ conservation and sustainable management, and strategies for ex situ conservation of the species and germplasm collection.

Abstract The purpose of this paper is evaluation of the influence of human saliva and its substitutes on the corrosion resistance of some implant alloys used in stomatology, which included: austenitic steel (316L), titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V), and cobalt alloy (CoCrMo). Corrosion studies were conducted by means of the potentiodynamic method with the application of the VoltaLab 21 kit with VoltaMaster 4 software. The reference electrode was a saturated calomel electrode (SCE), whereas the counter electrode was a platinum electrode. The results of conducted studies indicate an increased current density in the passive range on potentiodynamic curves of studied alloys in the environment of human saliva, and also in a commercial saliva solution - Mucinox. On the basis of conducted corrosion studies, it can be stated that in terms of corrosion resistance the developed saliva substitutes may constitute competitive solutions to commercial saliva substitutes. The prepared substitutes should be studied further from the perspective of practical application for patients. The original value of the paper is a proposition of new saliva substitutes.

Abstract:
Clay is one of the major raw materials in ceramics, paint and paper industries. In this paper, a report is given on the chemical composition of clay deposits in Ilaro and Ikorodu, South West Nigeria and their suitability as raw materials in the above mentioned industries is suggested by comparison of their composition with industry standards. The clay samples were activated with H2SO4 and their moisture content was determined. The mineral content of the clays was determined using atomic absorption spectroscopy, which showed significant presence of Si, Al, Fe, and Ti. The morphology of the clays was studied using scanning electron microscope (SEM/EDX) in combination with X-ray analysis. The investigation revealed the agglomeration of the particles of quartz and rutile on the surface structure of the activated clays. The results obtained from their observed properties and chemical compositions indicate that these clays are suitable for use in the ceramics, paint and paper industries. This proposition is supported by reduction in moisture contents of the activated clay samples from both Ilaro and Ikorodu.Int J Appl Sci Biotechnol, Vol 4(1): 21-26

Abstract:
Background: The cognitive behavioural (CB) model of health anxiety proposes parental illness leads to elevated health anxiety in offspring by promoting the acquisition of specific health beliefs (e.g. overestimation of the likelihood of illness). Aims: Our study tested this central tenet of the CB model. Method: Participants were 444 emerging adults (18–25-years-old) who completed online measures and were categorized into those with healthy parents (n = 328) or seriously ill parents (n = 116). Results: Small (d = .21), but significant, elevations in health anxiety, and small to medium (d = .40) elevations in beliefs about the likelihood of illness were found among those with ill vs. healthy parents. Mediation analyses indicated the relationship between parental illness and health anxiety was mediated by beliefs regarding the likelihood of future illness. Conclusions: Our study incrementally advances knowledge by testing and supporting a central proposition of the CB model. The findings add further specificity to the CB model by highlighting the importance of a specific health belief as a central contributor to health anxiety among offspring with a history of serious parental illness.

Abstract:
On August 21, 1861, Bishop Auguste Marie Martin of Natchitoches, Louisiana, issued a pastoral letter “on the occasion of the War of Southern Independence.” In it, Martin argued that slavery was “the manifest will of God.” It was the will of God for Catholics to continue “snatching from the barbarity of their ferocious customs thousands of children of the race of Canaan,” the cursed progeny of Noah. It was also the obligation of Catholics to repudiate abolitionists for “upset[ting] the will of Providence” and misusing “His merciful plans for unrighteous actions.” Father Napoleon Joseph Perché, coadjutor of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, submitted his approval of Martin's pastoral statement by printing it in the Catholic newspaper Le Propagateur Catholique. Three years later, the Roman Congregation of the Index issued a statement condemning the opinions espoused by Martin and approved by the French ecclesiastical leadership of New Orleans. The Index was Pope Pius IX's organization in charge of censoring ideas deemed unacceptable to Catholic doctrine. The Index argued against Martin's proposition “that there exists a natural difference between negroes and whites,” and that God sanctioned slavery as a means of redeeming Africans.

Abstract:
The internet of things (IoT) has become one of the most important technologies of the 21st century. The IoT environment is composed of heterogeneous IoT communication networks. These technologies are complementary and need to be integrated to meet the requirements of different types of IoT applications that require the mobility of the IoT device under different IoT communication networks. In this paper, the vertical handover decision method is considered to select the appropriate network among different IoT technologies. So, IoT devices, equipped with several radio technologies, can select the most suitable network based on several criteria like quality of service (QoS), cost, power, and security. In this work, a multi-attribute decision-making algorithm (MADM) based on techniques for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution (TOPSIS) that uses chi-square distance instead of Euclidean distance is proposed. The network reputation is added to reduce the average number of handoffs. The proposed algorithm was implemented to select the best technology depending on the requirements of the different IoT traffic classes. The obtained results showed that our proposition outperforms the traditional MADM algorithms.

Abstract:
Fed-batch enzymatic hydrolysis has the potential to improve the overall process of converting cellulosic biomass into ethanol. This paper utilizes a process simulation approach to identify and quantify techno-economic differences between batch and fed-batch enzymatic hydrolysis in cellulosic ethanol production. The entire process of converting corn stover into ethanol was simulated using SuperPro Designer simulation software. The analysis was conducted for a plant capacity of 2000 metric tons of dry biomass per day. A literature review was used to identify baseline parameters for the process. The sensitivity of the ethanol production cost to changes in sugar conversion efficiency, plant capacity, biomass cost, power cost, labor cost, and enzyme cost was evaluated using the process simulation. For the base scenario, the ethanol unit production cost was approximately $0.10/gallon lower for fed-batch hydrolysis. The greatest differences were seen in facilities costs, labor costs, and capital costs. Using a fed-batch operation decreased facilities costs by 41%, labor costs by 21%, and capital costs by 15%. The sensitivity analysis found that cost of biomass had the greatest effect on ethanol production cost, and in general, the results support the proposition that fed-batch enzymatic hydrolysis does improve the techno-economics of cellulosic ethanol production.

Abstract:
Artemisia Capillaris (AC) and Alisma Rhizome (AR) are natural products for the treatment of liver disorders in oriental medicine clinics. Here, we report metabolomic changes in the evaluation of the treatment effects of AC and AR on fatty livers in diabetic mice, along with a proposition of the underlying metabolic pathway. Hydrophobic and hydrophilic metabolites extracted from mouse livers were analyzed using HPLC-QTOF and CE-QTOF, respectively, to generate metabolic profiles. Statistical analysis of the metabolites by PLS-DA and OPLA-DA fairly discriminated between the diabetic, and the AC- and AR-treated mice groups. Various PEs mostly contributed to the discrimination of the diabetic mice from the normal mice, and besides, DG (18:1/16:0), TG (16:1/16:1/20:1), PE (21:0/20:5), and PA (18:0/21:0) were also associated with discrimination by s-plot. Nevertheless, the effects of AC and AR treatment were indistinct with respect to lipid metabolites. Of the 97 polar metabolites extracted from the CE-MS data, 40 compounds related to amino acid, central carbon, lipid, purine, and pyrimidine metabolism, with [Formula: see text] values less than 0.05, were shown to contribute to liver dysregulation. Following treatment with AC and AR, the metabolites belonging to purine metabolism preferentially recovered to the metabolic state of the normal mice. The AMP/ATP ratio of cellular energy homeostasis in AR-treated mice was more apparently increased ([Formula: see text]) than that of AC-treated mice. On the other hand, amino acids, which showed the main alterations in diabetic mice, did not return to the normal levels upon treatment with AR or AC. In terms of metabolomics, AR was a more effective natural product in the treatment of liver dysfunction than AC. These results may provide putative biomarkers for the prognosis of fatty liver disorder following treatment with AC and AR extracts.

Abstract Egypt’s population has recently exceeded 100 Million inhabitants; a figure that is anticipated to double within the coming 20-30 years. At a current 2% annual growth rate, changing socio economics needs, and anticipated demographic change; more than ever, has housing provision become a challenging proposition. Residential construction in Egypt amounts to 21% of the total construction output by value in 2015 in Egypt (9.548 Billion LE) which is almost equivalent to the construction output by value of powerplants (EGP 9.67Billion LE). In addition, the construction and demolition waste accounts for 44% of the total solid waste of 94 Million tons produced in Egypt. Given the scarcity of resources, the resultant CO2 emissions and pollution, in addition to Egypt’s commitment to the World Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); this paper, adopts a qualitative approach - literature review, to identify Egypt’s major housing challenges and potential solutions in light of SDG11. In this context, the concept of climate neutral design is investigated, different assessment tools are critically reviewed; and major components for strategy development are concluded in terms of levels and responsibilities. These are then used as a reference to reflect on Egypt housing strategies issued in 2016. This paper is exploratory in nature and is anticipated to furnish the ground for the following phase of the research to devise an action driven climate neutral housing strategy for Egypt.

Abstract:
Hedges are words whose job is to make things fuzzier or less fuzzy. Truth and falsity are a matter of degree, and hedges make natural language sentences more/less true or more/less false. The purpose of the study is to investigate hedging devices in Kurdish spoken language. The aim is to know how hedging devices are used in Kurdish spoken discourse. Also the researchers are willing to know whether Kurdish speakers use hedging devices to indicate a lack of complete commitment to the truth of the proposition, and a desire not to express the commitment categorically, or to lessen the impact of an utterance. The data needed for the study was collected through observation, tape recording, and interviews. The dialogues of 35 people were recorded by the researchers as well as the researchers have interviewed with 21 people from different social classes.15 classes and meetings which Kurdish language was the means of communication were observed. The research showed that hedging as a mitigating device is extensively employed in different conversations. The study shows that hedging devices have the same roles in Kurdish as they have in English. They are used to reduce the certainty and sureness of the utterances. It indicates that some pragmatic devices modify the epistemic strength of the statement in Kurdish language just as they do in English and Arabic.

Abstract:
Adult female elephant seals ( Mirounga angustirostris) combine long-term fasting with lactation and molting. Glycerol gluconeogenesis has been hypothesized as potentially meeting all of the glucose requirements of the seals during these fasts. To test this hypothesis, a primed constant infusion of [2-14C]glycerol was administered to 10 ten adult female elephant seals at 5 and 21–22 days postpartum and to 10 additional adult females immediately after the molt. Glycerol kinetics, rates of lipolysis, and the contribution of glycerol to glucose production were determined for each period. Plasma metabolite levels as well as insulin, glucagon, and cortisol were also measured. Glycerol rate of appearance was not significantly correlated with mass ( P = 0.14, r2 = 0.33) but was significantly related to the percentage of glucose derived from glycerol ( P < 0.01, r2 = 0.81) during late lactation. The contribution of glycerol to glucose production was <3% during each fasting period, suggesting a lower contribution to gluconeogenesis than is observed in other long-term fasting mammals. Because of a high rate of endogenous glucose production in fasting elephant seals, it is likely that glycerol gluconeogenesis still makes a substantial contribution to the substrate needs of glucose-dependent tissues. The lack of a relationship between glucoregulatory hormones and glycerol kinetics, glycerol gluconeogenesis, and metabolites supports the proposition that fasting elephant seals do not conform to the traditional insulin-glucagon model of substrate metabolism.

Abstract:
Pain, plantar to the metatarsophalangeal joints, is a common location for the presentation of pain in the forefoot. In the absence of fractures or specific inflammatory conditions common causes of pain in this area include: (1) nonspecific metatarsalgia, (2) plantar fat pad atrophy, and (3) interdigital (intermetatarsal) neuroma. The aggravation and possibly the etiology of these forms of forefoot pain may be related to acute or chronic extrinsic pressure to the forefoot. The role of nonweightbearing, compression of the metatarsal heads, weightbearing, and toe-stance (on the metatarsal heads) on the intermetatarsal pressure of the third interspace was measured in eleven asymptomatic volunteers. Intermetatarsal pressures were recorded using the Stryker Miniaturized Digital Fluid Pressure Monitor. Intermetatarsal pressures for nonweightbearing, nonweightbearing with medial-lateral compression of the metatarsal heads, weightbearing, and toe stance averaged 21 mm Hg, 22 mm Hg, 29 mm Hg, and 36 mm Hg, respectively. In comparison to nonweightbearing, significant increases in intermetatarsal pressures were measured with weightbearing (P = .0027) and toe stance (P = .0002). The change noted from weightbearing to toe-stance was also significant (P = .0005). These findings support the proposition that increases in forefoot plantar pressures convey greater pressures to the intermetatarsal space and metatarsal heads. Increased pressures to the intermetatarsal space may likewise lead to or exacerbate the symptoms of patients with fat pad atrophy, nonspecific metatarsalgia and Morton's neuroma.
