Abstract:
Darwinian evolution, defined as evolution arising from selection based directly on the properties of individuals, does not account for cultural constructs providing the organizational basis of human societies. The difficulty with linking Darwinian evolution to structural properties of cultural constructs is exemplified with kinship terminologies, a cultural construct that structures and delineates the domain of kin in human societies.

Abstract:
AbstractQuality control in heat treatment of steel is often conducted after the treatment. Failure to confine within the specified range of mechanical properties may lead to wasted energy and production resources. Performing quality control in-line in the heat treatment process allows for early detection and possibility to react to changes in the process. The prospects of utilizing the change in the electromagnetic (EM) properties of steel, as means for quality control, are investigated in this paper. The focus is on the tempering process of hardened SS2244 (42CrMoS4) steel. The tempering takes the hardness of the steel from approximately 600 HV down to around 400 HV. The EM signature of the steel is recorded during the tempering process. This is later compared with results from more traditional means of material characterization, such as laser scanning microscopy, X-ray diffractometry and Vickers microhardness measurement. This initial study shows clear indications of precise detection of the hardness through EM properties during the tempering process of selected material.

Abstract:
The hygric characterisation of authentic rammed earth materials is presented. Since these materials expand and liquefy upon contact with moisture, currently available methods are adapted to deal with this material evolution during the tests. In particular a thin permeable wick is introduced in the capillary absorption test. Moreover, confined and unconfined ways of testing are addressed. The results show that both the material origin and the material evolution can significantly impact the hygric properties.

Abstract:
Discovered in 1883, laccase is one of the first enzymes ever described. Now, after almost 140 years of research, it seems that this copper-containing protein with a number of unique catalytic properties is widely distributed across all kingdoms of life. Laccase belongs to the superfamily of multicopper oxidases (MCOs)—a group of enzymes comprising many proteins with different substrate specificities and diverse biological functions. The presence of cupredoxin-like domains allows all MCOs to reduce oxygen to water without producing harmful byproducts. This review describes structural characteristics and plausible evolution of laccase in different taxonomic groups. The remarkable catalytic abilities and broad substrate specificity of laccases are described in relation to other copper-containing MCOs. Through an exhaustive analysis of laccase roles in different taxa, we find that this enzyme evolved to serve an important, common, and protective function in living systems.

Abstract:
Study on the intrinsic properties and evolutional mechanism of urban public transit networks (PTNs) has great significance for transit planning and control, particularly considering passengers’ dynamic behaviors. This paper presents an empirical analysis for exploring the complex properties of Beijing’s weighted bus transit network (BTN) based on passenger flow in L-space, and proposes a bi-level evolution model to simulate the development of transit routes from the view of complex network. The model is an iterative process that is driven by passengers’ travel demands and dual-controlled interest mechanism, which is composed of passengers’ spatio-temporal requirements and cost constraint of transit agencies. Also, the flow’s dynamic behaviors, including the evolutions of travel demand, sectional flow attracted by a new link and flow perturbation triggered in nearby routes, are taken into consideration in the evolutional process. We present the numerical experiment to validate the model, where the main parameters are estimated by using distribution functions that are deduced from real-world data. The results obtained have proven that our model can generate a BTN with complex properties, such as the scale-free behavior or small-world phenomenon, which shows an agreement with our empirical results. Our study’s results can be exploited to optimize the real BTN’s structure and improve the network’s robustness.

Abstract:
Based on the measured CCT diagram of steel S34MnV, the parameters for the heat treatment of large marine crankthrow were designed, and the models for predicting microstructural evolution and mechanical properties were developed. By computer simulation, the temperature and phase volume evolutions in the controlled cooling process were predicted together with the final mechanical properties. Finally, the manufactural trial was carried out in heavy plant, the temperature evolution and final mechanical properties on the blank were obtained. The manufactural data agree well with the predicted results.

Abstract:
Consideration of the influence of cholesterol on the physical properties of biological membranes leads to the conclusion that cholesterol increases the thickness of fluid membrane bilayers without appreciably increasing the microviscosity component of membrane fluidity. At sufficiently high cholesterol concentrations, the gel–liquid crystalline phase transition is completely eliminated in phospholipids–cholesterol mixtures and the system has the properties of a two-dimensional liquid over a wide range of temperatures. It is proposed that with the evolution of cholesterol and related sterols in an oxygen-rich atmosphere, the resulting modification of physical constraints on membrane properties made it possible for new evolutionary driving forces to manifest themselves leading to the peculiar properties of plasma membranes of eucaryotic cells.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper reviews the properties and evolutionary status of white dwarf stars, focusing most closely on those aspects which are likely to be of significance to understanding the ultimate fate of planetary nebulae and their central stars. White dwarf stars show a broad variety of chemical compositions. Broadly speaking, they are divided into the DA stars (with H-rich photospheres) and the non-DA stars (with He-rich photospheres), though there are a fairly large number of subtypes. The mass distribution of white dwarf stars is quite narrow, with a mean value near 0.6 and with extremes at 0.43 and 1.05. Different varieties of trace elements (such as C, N, 0, Si, Ca, and Mg) are quite common. I will review several recent proposals for explaining these abundance patterns. A particularly significant question is whether processes operating while the star cools as a white dwarf can account for their variety, or whether at least part of the white dwarf phenomenology is related to events which took place when the object was a planetary nebula or even earlier.
