Abstract:
The purpose of this essay was to examine Islamic State’s (IS) self-image and perception of their enemies, and also what kind of propaganda technique that they use in their movies. To do so three questions were formulated: 1. According to Social Identity Theory the ingroup’s social identity is the same as the ingroup’s prototype. How is IS’s prototype portrayed, and thus their social identity, in the movies Flames of War and Clanging of the Swords IV? 2. According to Social Identity Theory a consequence of group membership is that the ingroup will associate outgroups with stereotypic images. What stereotypic images does IS’s associate outgroups with in the movies Flames of War and Clanging of the Swords IV? 3. According to Jacques Ellul propaganda can be categorized as either rational or irrational. So, based on his definition of propaganda, what kind of propaganda technique is used in Flames of War and Clanging of the Swords IV ? In this paper four segments were analyzed from two of IS’s movies: Flames of War and Clanging of the Swords IV. Two theories were used in this essay: Ellul’s theory on rational and irrational propaganda, and also Social Identity Theory. The first theory presents different techniques of argumentation that can be classified as either rational or irrational propaganda. The second theory describes the phenomenon known as prototype and stereotype. The most common propaganda technique used in the movies was that of social evidence, which is a rational strategy of propaganda. This means that the propaganda mainly uses symbols in its arguments, which in this case is the symbol of Allah. IS uses Allah, as well as their leader Al-Baghdadi, to justify their actions. Irrational propaganda is also used quite often. It can be seen in the way IS describes their own group and their enemies. IS always describes themselves with positive attributes and characteristics, while their enemies are described as their complete opposite. The purpose of this is to make the viewer automatically start to associate the ingroup (IS) as good and the outgroups (enemies) as evil. The prototype of IS is that they see themselves as the holy warriors of Allah executing His will on earth. The stereotypic image of IS’s enemies is that they are apostates and enemies of Allah. Their infidelity has provoked Allah, they’re sinners and thus IS considers it to be their duty to punish them.

Abstract:
Philosophy of education not only forms the background for curriculum construction and pedagogy but there is a connection between epistemology and education within the economic power structure of society in the United States (Aronowitz & Giroux, 1993/1991, p. 88). Public education in the United States often functions as a propaganda delivery system which conserves the economic power structure by use of a conservative and objectivist philosophy of education which instrumentalizes education into vocational preparation, compliance to a governing ideology and uncritical acceptance of knowledge as absolute truth (Aronowitz & Giroux, p. 22). This project aims to construct a philosophy of education which could transform the education system into a counter-propaganda institution with the potential to transform the power structure of society. A critical postmodern philosophy of education which synthesized critical and postmodern philosophies of education would emphasize epistemological skepticism, counter-propaganda knowledge construction and social transformation (Aronowitz & Giroux, p.22). In addition, the project contains a literature review of critical theory, postmodern theory and critical postmodern theory on education as well as theory on a critical postmodern philosophy of history education, philosophy of correctional education and ideas for the implementation of the philosophy of education into specific pedagogical and curricular practices. Attached to this manuscript is a PowerPoint presentation focused on stimulating discussion of this philosophy of education.

Abstract:
The thesis sets out to examine the little studied phenomenon of translating and rewriting children’s literature during Fascism. Under Mussolini’s rule, books for children had to perform the important task of forging the ‘new Italians’. For this reason, the presence of foreign literature on the Italian book market became increasingly problematic, as the regime attempted to achieve cultural and economic autarchy. This research aims to show how, rather than merely reflecting dominant ideologies, the translation of books for children was a site for negotiation, allowing different, and sometimes conflicting narratives and discourses to be identified and fruitfully examined. By adopting an interdisciplinary theoretical framework, where theories from Translation Studies, Children’s Literature, and studies on Fascism, are integrated, translations and rewritings of books for children are employed as hermeneutic tools to explore the multifaceted nature of the regime’s ideology and cultural production, beyond the official façade of unity and consistency. Central questions concerning the construction and defense of Fascist identity are addressed through a selection of case studies, showing different strategies and functions of translating and rewriting for children. The Fascist rewritings of Collodi’s Pinocchio are analysed in relation to Fascism’s relationship with tradition, focusing on the ways in which the past was ‘rewritten’ at different phases of the dictatorship. The challenges of translating a book that had been openly condemned by Fascist institutions are examined by looking at the two translations of Alice in Wonderland which appeared during the 1930s. The complex reception and the controversial success of American comics is investigated, where the different strategies of translation and re-creation reveal complex dynamics of interactions between imported and native products. Finally, the process of rewriting an apparently timeless and universal tradition is observed in the book series ‘La Scala d’Oro’, which was highly regarded by official culture, despite publishing mostly foreign titles.

A presente pesquisa de mestrado procura analisar o conteúdo de discursos de lideranças políticas de direita, com o intuito de averiguar seu potencial de mobilização nos espectadores. O que inclui investigar se as técnicas utilizadas atualmente se assemelham, de alguma forma, com as quais Adorno menciona em seu texto \"As Palestras Radiofônicas de Martin Luther Thomas\". Além de Theodor W. Adorno, também se utilizou da teoria de Sigmund Freud e Siegfried Kracauer. Um segundo objetivo, que contribui com o primeiro, é a análise da montagem, edição e decupagem desses vídeos, justamente para ver como esses processos e os enquadramentos contribuem com essa mobilização. O método utilizado é a análise de estímulos. Os materiais são vídeos de propagandas políticas atuais de políticos que ocupem um lugar no imaginário do povo brasileiro. A escolha por vídeos se deu por conta da propaganda conservadora utilizar, principalmente, da imagem e da propaganda. Ou seja, o objeto é intrínseco ao objetivo e ele faz parte do método
The present master\'s research seeks to analyze the content of speeches of political leaders of the right wing, with the intention of ascertaining their potential of mobilization in the spectators. This includes investigating whether the techniques currently resemble, in some way, with what Adorno mentions in his text, \"The Martin Luther Thomas Radio Lectures.\" In addition to Theodor W. Adorno, it was also used the theory of Sigmund Freud and Siegfried Kracauer. A second objective, which contributes to the first one, is the analysis of the editing and decupage of these videos, precisely to see how these processes and the frameworks contribute to this mobilization. The method used is the analysis of stimuli. The materials are videos of current political propaganda of politicians who occupy a place in the imaginary of the Brazilian people. The choice for videos was due to conservative propaganda mainly using image and advertising. That is, the object is intrinsic to the goal and it is part of the method

O objetivo desta pesquisa é demonstrar a construção retórica discursiva utilizada pelos candidatos, Dilma Rousseff (PT) e Aécio Neves (PSDB), no segundo turno da campanha eleitoral à Presidência da República em 2014, a fim de significar os discursos em especial no que se refere aos temas: corrupção, economia e desenvolvimento social. Para o trabalho de análise foram utilizados aspectos teóricos e metodológicos da Teoria do Discurso de Ernesto Laclau e Chantal Mouffe. A partir das principais categorias de análise: o antagonismo e a formação hegemônica discursiva nós abordamos as diferenças em que os candidatos se constroem e também desconstroem o seu opositor na lógica e na dimensão social da luta política. O material empírico que embasa a pesquisa parte das falas dos candidatos veiculadas no Horário Gratuito de Propaganda Eleitoral (HGPE) em que tratam sobre os temas elencados. A pesquisa destaca a estratégia discursiva, bem como as categorias centrais de análise extraídas da obra Hegemonia e Estratégia Socialista, em consonância com os estudos teóricos, do pós-estruturalismo, em que Laclau constrói os conceitos fundantes da teoria, como forma de desvelar os aspectos complexos da política. Sobre tudo, a hipótese que guia esta dissertação consiste na afirmação de que a campanha eleitoral de 2014 apontou para uma diferenciação ideológica marcante, sobretudo econômica, entre os candidatos do PT e do PSDB. Enquanto a situação defendeu discursivamente a eficiência das medidas governamentais em defesa e promoção do desenvolvimento social para a geração de renda e riquezas, a oposição colocou em dúvida a gestão e a eficiência governamental vigente e como técnica, assim a coligação liderada pelo PSDB defendia um discurso com propostas geradoras de desenvolvimento econômico para a projeção de mecanismos em defesa do social.
This research aims to demonstrate the discursive construction used by candidates Dilma Rousseff (PT) and Aécio Neves (PSDB), in the second round of the election campaign for President of the Brazilian Republic in the year 2014. His speeches are analyzed under themes such as corruption, economics and or social development. The analytical work was done under theoretical and methodological aspects of the authors Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe. The main categories of analysis like antagonism and hegemonic discursive formation are taken to stablish discursive differences between the two candidates in logic and social dimension of political struggle. The empirical data of this research are the speeches of candidates since they were aired on the Free Time of Electoral Propaganda (HGPE in Portuguese) where they treat on those issues. The research highlights the discursive strategy, as well as central categories of discourse analysis extracted from Hegemony and Socialist Strategy work, in line with the theoretical studies and the post-structuralism. The hypothesis guiding this thesis is the claim that the election campaign of 2014 pointed to marked ideological differences, especially on economics, between the candidates of the PT and the PSDB. While the situation discursively defended the effectiveness of government measures in defense and promotion of social development for the generation of income and wealth, the opposition questioned the management and the current government efficiency, since the coalition led by the PSDB defended a speech with generating proposals for development in order to reach the projection of mechanisms in defense of the social dimension.

Abstract:
This study employs semiotic methods to identify the post-revolutionary roles of former Cuban President Fidel Castro in order to classify the transformations of his character portrayal over time. Informed by Goffman's framing theory as well as suggestions of agenda-setting and priming, this qualitative study analyzes 19 propaganda posters for communications of encoded messages. In this medium, the research explores thematic patterns of sociopolitical and sociocultural signs which add to the richness of Castro's appeal. In addition to providing a unique perspective on interrogating visual images, this study offers a better understanding of the influential power of professional design and the use of semiotics in political propaganda.

Abstract:
This essay aims at studying the use of social media by states and state actors. More specifically, the study is exploring how the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are using their official Twitter account @IDFSpokesperson in relation to the 2018 Gaza protests. The study is utilizing a quantitative content analysis as well as a framing analysis for the analysis of the Twitter account and is having a theoretical base in framing theory. The findings suggest that there is a problem when democratic states use social media – there is a fine line between being transparent and disseminating propaganda.

Abstract:
This thesis argues that the Swedish Gymnsatics League during the 1930’s articulated, what in previous research has been called a citizenship project. This citizenship project was formulated against the backdrop of the widely held gymnastic ideological belief about a ‘sound mind in a sound body’. In the historical context regarding the contemporary problem concerning the qualitative issue of the people, the gymnasts formulated gymnastics as an activity, aimed to produce an ideal, healthy citizen. In 1934, the Swedish gymnastics started a propaganda organization called National Society for promotion of Gymnastics (Riksföreningen för gymnastikens främjande) and its yearbook. The organization aimed to educate, and convince the Swedish population with the ultimate objective to make them active participants, and practitioners in gymnastic body culture. I argue that the gymnasts, through propaganda media as the yearbook, and the gymnastics display, addressed audiences as civic publics, with the potential of, though gymnastics, obtain properties connected to the idea of the ideal citizen. Regarding the conceptions of the gymnasts’ citizenship ideals, the essay demonstrates how the gymnasts argued that ideal civic virtues was reflected in the individual’s aesthetical bodily properties, which ultimately signified health. Thus, they argued that the properties liked to the ideal citizen only could be obtained through physical exercise, and the cultivation of a ‘healthy’ body, via gymnastic exercises. In the mid-1930’s the Gymnastics League undertook an international mission to display the superiority of Swedish gymnastics in front of foreign audiences, primarily by performing a non-competitive display at the Olympics in Berlin. I argue that this international outlook produced, and enhanced the national significance, and citizenship producing purpose of the gymnastics, especially when transcribed and mediated in the National Society’s yearbook, hence with the aim of addressing Swedish publics. The strategy of convincing the Swedish population of participating in gymnastics, through international exposure culminated at the Lingiad in Stockholm 1939, where the Gymnastics League invited to world in celebration of the centennial memory of the death of Per Hendrik Ling, the creator of Swedish gymnastics. This event displayed en masse what could be achieved through gymnastics, and enhanced the universal significance of Swedish culture in producing ascetically, and therefore civically sound, national citizens.

Abstract:
As descobertas relacionadas à neurociência e aos métodos de coleta e análise de dados neurofisiológicos têm fomentado discussões sobre a aplicação desses aspectos em outras campos do conhecimento, dentre eles, o da comunicação. Este estudo tem como objetivo identificar e aferir processos neurais associados à avaliação emocional positiva e negativa de campanhas de segurança no trânsito, de modo a relacioná-los aos apontamentos trazidos pela Prospect Theory (ou Teoria Prospectiva), de que as pessoas tendem a responder de modo diferente ao se alterar apenas a forma de apresentação de um mesmo problema. Tal fato é especialmente importante na comunicação de riscos, em que são frequentemente utilizadas abordagens emocionais negativas como forma de discurso persuasivo. Deste modo, fez-se uma aplicação desses pressupostos ao campo da comunicação, sendo elaboradas duas campanhas experimentais de segurança no trânsito: uma contendo uma perspectiva emocional negativa e outra contendo uma perspectiva emocional positiva. Essas campanhas foram apresentadas em laboratório a 24 voluntários, os quais tiveram sua atividade cortical aferida pelo eletroencefalograma (EEG) e analisada do ponto de vista quantitativo e qualitativo, a fim de verificar uma assimetria frontal hemisférica de ondas alfa e teta nas duas condições, sugerida pela literatura como sendo atrelada a processos emocionais positivos e negativos. Como principais resultados, destacam-se a ocorrência de processos assimétricos significativos tanto na comparação entre as condições (i) neutra e negativa como nas condições (ii) neutra e positiva e (iii) positiva versus negativa, resultados que variaram conforme método de análise empregado. Em termos conclusivos, nota-se a verificação dos processos assimétricos previstos na literatura, porém, com grande variabilidade de amplitude e ocorrência no tempo entre os indivíduos, indicando que a metodologia de coleta com o EEG pode constituir uma forma complementar, e não isolada, de investigação dos processos comunicacionais em relação aos métodos tradicionais de pesquisa qualitativa e quantitativa empregados no campo da comunicação.
The findings related to neuroscience and methods of collection and analysis of neurophysiological data have encouraged discussions on the implementation of those aspects in other fields of knowledge, including communication. This study aims to identify and assess neural processes associated with positive and negative emotional evaluation of traffic safety campaigns, in order to relate them to the Prospect Theory considerations, that people tend to respond differently by changing only the presentation of the same problem. This fact is especially important in the risk communication scenario, which often uses the negative approach as a form of persuasive discourse. Thus, there was an application of these assumptions to the field of communication: two traffic safety campaigns were made: one containing a negative emotional perspective and another containing a positive emotional outlook. These campaigns were presented to 24 subjects in the laboratory, which had their cortical activity measured by electroencephalography (EEG) and analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively, in order to verify a frontal asymmetry of alpha and theta bands in both conditions, suggested by the literature as being linked to positive and negative emotional processes. The main results highlight the occurrence of significant asymmetric activation both in the comparison between (i) neutral and negative conditions as (ii) neutral and positive conditions and (iii) positive versus negative, results that varied according to method of analysis employed. In conclusive terms, there was a verification of asymmetric process verified in the literature, however, with notable variability in amplitude and occurrence in time between individuals, indicating that the methodology of EEG can complement, not in an isolated form, investigations of communication processes in relation to traditional methods of qualitative and quantitative research in the communication field.

A propaganda institucional é utilizada pelos governos para estabelecer uma interlocução com a Sociedade. Essa modalidade de comunicação governamental é amparada pela Constituição Federal e utilizada pela presidência da República, governos estaduais e prefeituras municipais. Porém, diferentemente das empresas que anunciam seus produtos visando mercados consumidores, dos candidatos a cargos eletivos que visam serem eleitos e das campanhas de orientação para mudanças de comportamento, a propaganda institucional atua como forma de dar publicidade às ações governamentais. Por essa forma de comunicação, o Poder Executivo procura apresentar suas ações de governo utilizando estratégias de convencimento visando reforçar sua imagem institucional para o cidadão. Nessa interlocução com a Sociedade, os governos constroem e projetam imagens de si ao se apresentar ao interlocutor com intuito de obter sua conivência em relação ao comunicado. Essa auto-representação construída, chamada de ethos, é utilizada para imbuir credibilidade e identificação à gestão governamental. Esta pesquisa procura identificar o ethos construído e projetado pela gestão do governador Antonio Anastasia, do Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB), frente ao estado de Minas Gerais. O arcabouço teórico da pesquisa foi construído com base na Teoria Semiolinguística de Análise do Discurso, proposta por Patrick Charaudeau. O corpus de análise é composto por quatro propagandas institucionais televisivas, de campanhas publicitárias diferentes, veiculadas nos anos de 2012 e 2013, focadas aos campos da Saúde, Educação, Segurança Pública e Desenvolvimento Econômico. Para atingir o objetivo de identificação do ethos discursivo por essa modalidade de comunicação governamental, analisamos as condições situacionais de identificação, finalidade, domínio do saber e dispositivo constituído e as condições discursivas de legitimidade, credibilidade e captação do contrato de comunicação estabelecido tacitamente entre o governo e a Sociedade. Os resultados identificaram que o governo do PSDB em Minas Gerais utiliza a propaganda institucional para se mostrar, principalmente, como gestão competente à sociedade.
The public relations advertising is used by the governments to establish a dialogue with the society. This type of government communication is supported by the Brazilian Federal Constitution and is used by the Presidency of the Republic, state and municipal governments. But unlike the companies that advertise their products aimed at consumer markets, candidates for elected office, which aim to be elected, and guidance campaigns for behavioral changes, the public relations advertising acts only as a way of publicizing the government actions. For this form of communication, the Executive Branch seeks to present its government actions using persuasion strategies to strengthen its institutional image to the citizen. In this dialogue with the society, the governments build and project images of themselves presenting themselves to the caller with the purpose of getting their connivance in relation to the statement. This built self-representation, called ethos, is used to infuse credibility and identification to the government management. This research seeks to identify the ethos which has been built and designed for the management of Governor Antonio Anastasia, of the Brazilian Social Democratic Party (PSDB), in the state of Minas Gerais. The theoretical research framework was built on Semiolinguistics Theory of Discourse Analysis proposed by Patrick Charaudeau. The analysis corpus consists of four television public relations advertising from different campaigns aired in the years 2012 and 2013, focused on the public services of Health, Education, Public Safety and Economic Development. To achieve the goal of identifying the discursive ethos by this type of government communication, we have analyzed situational conditions of identification, purpose, knowledge domain and constituent device and the discursive conditions of legitimacy, credibility and capture of the communication agreement established between the government and the society. The results showed that the government of PSDB in Minas Gerais uses the public relations advertising to show mainly as a competent management to society.

Concretamente, nos proponemos analizar las estructuras sintácticas fundamentales en la elaboración del eslogan electoral español entre los años 1975 y 2000. Este objetivo general del proyecto de tesis se concreta en tres objetivos particulares:1) Elaboración de un corpus documental de eslóganes políticos electorales representativo de esta etapa de la historia política española.2) Consideraciones teóricas acerca del eslogan y de su contexto. Trataremos de definir y de delimitar nuestro objeto de estudio: el eslogan político electoral. De igual modo, daremos cuenta del contexto histórico, social y político en el que fueron emitidos. 3) Análisis del corpus. Finalmente, afrontaremos el análisis de las principales estructuras sintácticas del eslogan electoral y ofreceremos una interpretación de su rentabilidad en este tipo de texto.
This research raises the study of a type of mass communication text: the slogan. It has been adopted a linguistic perspective. Precisely, we propose to analyze the basic syntactic structures used to write the spanish electoral slogans between the years 1975 and 2000.This general objective of the thesis project is materialized by three particular objectives:1) Preparation of a documentary corpus of electoral political slogans representative of this period of the Spanish political history. 2) Theoretical considerations about the slogan and its context. We will try to define and specify our object of study: the electoral political slogan. In the same way we will provide the historical, social and political context in which they were issued.3) Corpus analysis. Finally, we will face up to the analysis of the main syntactical structures of the electoral slogan and we will offer an interpretation of its profitability in this kind of text.

This study is about the so called Islamic States’ use of Islamic religious traditions in their propaganda magazine Dabiq. The purpose of the study is to find out how ISIS use history as a blueprint to perceive and interpret current events and occurrences. The theories of sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, Capital, and sociopsychologist Hjalmar Sundén’s Role theory is used to analyze how the different religious traditions and stories are used by ISIS and what these represent in the Muslim’s religious frame of perception. The results of this study show that the religious traditions are being used in order to legitimize, justify and establish their so-called Caliphate according to the stories of old. The results also show that not only religious matters are used to emphasize their claim in the Middle East but profane examples as well.

Embora a literatura sobre governança corporativa seja robusta e siga avançando em várias áreas do conhecimento, as abordagens tradicionais da academia, bem como sua efetividade na práxis empresarial, têm sido muito questionadas, dentre outra razões, pelas lacunas de compreensão sobre os contextos organizacionais que a envolvem. Esta tese investiga como os processos de governança, as recompensas para os níveis não-diretivos – cuja investigação costuma ser negligenciada pela literatura –, e as percepções de justiça organizacional podem afetar sua efetividade. Sob a perspectiva da Teoria dos Stakeholders, ela contempla a pesquisa do stakeholder empregado a partir de abordagens qualitativas, ampliando as discussões de governança e contribuindo para sua melhor compreensão. Tendo como campo empírico o setor de agências de propaganda, o estudo buscou compreender como as pressões externas e internas influenciam suas decisões de negócios e de recompensas, e como elas afetam a percepção de justiça dos funcionários. Para tanto, foram realizados quatro estudos de casos, analisados em duas dimensões: dimensão institucional (níveis institucional e organizacional de análise) e intraorganizacional (níveis organizacional e individual de análise). Os resultados apontam que a percepção de justiça sobre as recompensas leva em conta quão justos são os demais stakeholders (organização, supervisor, controlador, pares, clientes etc.) e o grau de equidade das recompensas em relação às recompensas dos superiores, liderados e pares (dentro e fora da organização). Essas percepções de justiça organizacional impactam a efetividade da governança na medida em que estão diretamente relacionadas à confiança, ao comprometimento, aos comportamentos cooperativos e à produtividade. Do ponto de vista teórico, o trabalho contribui para melhor compreensão da temática de governança corporativa, à medida que avança no estudo das práticas de governança, contextualizando o tema no âmbito da organização e do ambiente onde está inserida. Empiricamente, contribui no avanço do uso de abordagens qualitativas de investigação do tema.
Although literature on corporate governance is robust and has been advancing continuously in several areas of knowledge, traditional academic approaches, as well as its effectiveness in the praxis, have been strongly questioned, among other reasons, by the lack of understanding about the organizational contexts. This work investigates how governance processes, rewards for non-directive levels – whose research is often neglected by literature – and how organizational justice perceptions may affect its effectiveness. In the light of Stakeholder Theory it researches the stakeholder employee using qualitative approaches, extending governance discussions and contributing to their better understanding. The study sought to understand how external and internal pressures influence their business decisions and rewards, and how they affect employees' perception of justice. The empirical field is the advertising agency sector. Four case studies were carried out, analyzed in two dimensions: institutional dimension (institutional and organizational levels of analysis) and intraorganizational (organizational and individual levels of analysis). The results show that the perception of fairness over rewards takes into account the fairness of other stakeholders (organization, supervisor, holding, co-workers, clients, etc.) and the degree of fairness of the rewards in relation to the rewards of superiors and peers (inside and outside the organization). The organizational justice perceptions impact the effectiveness of governance insofar as they are directly related to trust, commitment, cooperative behavior, and productivity. From the theoretical point of view, the work contributes to a better understanding of corporate governance, as it advances in the study of governance practices, contextualizing the theme within the organization and the environment where it is inserted. Empirically, it contributes to the advancement of the use of qualitative research approaches of the theme.

In the Islamic world, the term Jihad bears intricate meaning, and its rightful interpretation has occupied many scholars and Muslims across the globe. For some, it relates to the personal struggle that one may have to deal with on a regular basis. For others, the term operates on the basis of a willingness to fight. While the latter interpretation seems to be shared by extremist terrorists of organisations such as ISIS and Al Qaeda, the majority of Muslims have an entirely different interpretation of jihad. This essay wishes to delve deeper into this intricate term in order to come closer to an understanding of Jihad. This is done by conducting a qualitative and comparative analysis of three magazines of propaganda: the Ahmadiyya Community, the Islamic State and Al Qaeda respectively. The results of the study showed that the Ahmadiyya Community claim that a vital aspect of jihad is “jihad-of-the-pen”, a concept which aims to educate other people on the peaceful nature of Islam. Because of the wrongful interpretation of Jihad by extremist organisations, the Ahmadiyya Community take to the pen in order to battle these misinterpretations while also wanting to show that Islam is a peaceful religion. Furthermore, they claim that this wrongful interpretation affects the way ordinary law-abiding Muslim citizens are being viewed upon. Moreover, the findings also showed that ISIS and Al Qaeda interpret jihad as being the “jihad-of-the-sword”, whereby it is considered to be the sixth pillar. While ISIS use the concept of jihad to justify its fighting of the disbelievers, including Muslims who deal with ‘Crusader’ Western democracies, Al Qaeda aims their jihad towards the United States, whom they feel are the root to everything terror. The essay concludes with a the notion that research on this topic should focus more on peaceful jihad, the kind of personal and inner struggle that is being advocated by the Ahmadiyya communities. Literature, such as Understanding Jihad, Field of Blood, and The Secret History of Al Qaeda, has all too much tended to the violent-nature of jihad and left the peaceful, inner struggle out of the discussion. More research can be conducted on this topic to further paint the picture of peaceful struggle, which is a struggle that is felt for the absolute majority of Muslims throughout this world.

The present study aims at analyzing the discursive constructions of the candidates for Mayor of Pelotas, Fetter Jr and Fernando Marroni, in the second round of municipal elections of 2008, at the Free Time Election Propaganda (HGPE) in television media, especially related to the more used themes in this campaign: health and asphalt. The subject of health, always highlighted in election campaigns because of the importance in people's lives, was addressed in order to highlight what each candidate did while he was in the position of the situation and what his opponent did not perform while he held office. The issue of asphalt gained prominence due to an amount arising out of international finance, whose authorship of the project, as well as its content, were the central theme of the speeches. Besides trying to understand the articulatory practice used by each candidate to hegemonize their discourses and visualize the existing antagonistic cut, the study also seeks to analyze the rhetorical strategies used by each one trying to persuade the voters viewers. For the analysis related to these themes, the research's main theoretical concepts are Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe's discourse theory. Seeking to support the discursive behavior of these candidates in this theoretical approach, this paper seeks to understand not only the construction of discourses, but also see its use specifically in television media. This dissertation as a whole, is a set of theories and empirical analyses that seek to approximate the areas of political science and media, to give an overview of marketing activity in the construction of political speeches to television and thus colaborating the understanding of this issue so present in contemporary democratic processes
O presente estudo tem como objetivo principal analisar as construções discursivas dos candidatos a Prefeito de Pelotas, Fetter Júnior e Fernando Marroni, no segundo turno da eleição municipal de 2008, no Horário Gratuito de Propaganda Eleitoral (HGPE) na mídia televisiva, especialmente relacionadas aos temas mais recorrentes na referida campanha: saúde e asfalto. O tema saúde, sempre destacado em campanhas eleitorais devido à importância na vida das pessoas, foi abordado de forma a ressaltar o que cada candidato fez enquanto esteve na posição de situação e o que seu oponente não realizou enquanto ocupou o cargo. Já o tema asfalto ganhou destaque devido a uma verba advinda de financiamento internacional, cuja autoria do projeto, bem como o seu conteúdo, foram o tema central dos discursos. Além de tentar compreender a prática articulatória usada por cada candidato para hegemonizar seu discurso e visualizar o corte antagônico existente, também são analisadas as estratégias retóricas utilizadas por cada um na tentativa de persuadir o eleitor telespectador. Para a análise em relação a estes temas, a pesquisa tem como principal referencial teórico os conceitos de Ernesto Laclau e Chantal Mouffe sobre teoria do discurso. Buscando apoiar o comportamento discursivo destes candidatos neste aporte teórico, o presente trabalho busca compreender não só a construção dos discursos, como também visualizar sua utilização especificamente na mídia televisiva. For about a decade, the Russian opposition politician Aleksej Navalnyj has been a topic in the Swedish news media. Particularly since the end of august 2020, when suspected of having been poisoned with the neurotoxin novitjok. Often described as a freedom fighter in the Swedish press, Navalnyj, however, has a quite varied background in both liberal and nationalist groups. Since the poisoning, however, questions have been raised about Navalnyjs past, who he actually is, and what he wants to achieve. Yet, he tends to be described as a freedom fighter in most texts. In this essay we aim to examine not the narrative of Navalnyjs fight against Vladimir Putin's Russia, but how he is framed in the Swedish news press. To do so, we combine a quantitative digital text analysis with a qualitative frame analysis. By applying a theoretical framework based on acknowledged media theories such as framing and priming theory combined with earlier studies on the topic, we find that Navalnyj tends to be framed as a kind of antithesis to the Russian regime and Putin. Also, it seems the conflict is not limited to the borders of Russia, nor to the Russian people. The European Union is reported to take interest in the conflict, for example, taking Navalnyjs side. A logical explanation may be found in the view on Russia in the Swedish society, which is employed as a frame in the media and hence gets reproduced into society.

When Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands in 1982, it was the beginning of a two month long war. The aim of this essay is to find alternative explanations to the Falklands war with the main question being whether there were hidden motives for Thatcher and her reactions in 1982.   The essay will focus on the period 1965-1982 in which different texts will be analyzed by applying theories. The diversionary war theory describes how state leaders can improve their political popularity by intentionally escalating a conflict. The geopolitical theory explains how a state, by investments, constructions and military, can create demographic and international perceptions regarding a territory while foreign political theory describes how decision making is affected by the bureaucracy, psychology and the international system.   The ministry of defense and the navy was heavily affected by the financial cuts during the conflict and may also have affected the manner in which they advised Thatcher in 1982. Because of the British unwillingness to invest geopolitically in the Falklands and their aggravation of the diplomatically efforts to find a peaceful solution, the conflict got worse. In addition, Thatchers intentions to implement economic reforms and her record low political popularity make it plausible to suspect her for having, intentionally, escalated the conflict to gain political popularity and to enable the economic reforms.

A presente tese apresenta uma proposta de ensino de língua portuguesa para alunos do Programa Nacional de Integração da Educação Básica com a Educação Profissional na Modalidade de Educação de Jovens e Adultos (PROEJA), baseada na metodologia Molar de abordagem de textos gramaticais do Prof. Dr. Maurício da Silva. A metodologia foi aplicada ao estudo das regras de emprego do hífen explicitadas no texto das Bases XV e XVI do Acordo Ortográfico da Língua Portuguesa de 1990, tendo em vista a grande importância do assunto em razão da entrada em vigor do Acordo em 2016 e a grande dificuldade de apreensão das referidas regras, bem como das convenções ortográficas em geral, manifestada pelos discentes da referida modalidade de ensino. A proposta criada e descrita nesta tese apoiou-se, também, na utilização da teoria de Gêneros Textuais como forma de mediar a transposição didática dos pressupostos teóricos. Assim sendo, apresenta-se aqui a criação de um material didático em que se corporificou essa transposição para textos dos gêneros bula, propaganda e cápsulas hifênicas.
This thesis presents a proposal on Portuguese language teaching to students of the National Elementary Education Integration Program with Vocational Education in the Youth and Adult Education Mode (PROEJA) based on the Molar methodology approach to grammatical texts by Dr. Mauricio da Silva. The methodology was applied to the study of the rules on the use of the hyphen explained in the Bases XV and XVI of the 1990 Portuguese Language Orthographic Agreement, due to the great importance of the subject, which will come into effect in 2016, and the great difficulties in apprehension of those rules, as well as spelling conventions in general, shown by students of the aforementioned mode of education. The proposal created and described in this thesis was supported by the Genre theory as a way to mediate the didactic transposition of the theoretical assumptions. Therefore, this paper presents the creation of pedagogical material that embodied this transposition to texts of CMI (Consumer Medicine Information) leaflets, advertising and hyphenic capsules.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate how politics was done at the level of the parliamentary constituencies at the time of the treaty of Amiens 1802-1803. This is achieved through two case studies of the elections in Middlesex and Nottingham, which are investigated as social practices. This thesis argues that understandings of masculinity and national identity, as well as questions about the nature of the constitution and citizen rights were central to participants in the extraparliamentary political process. Collective emotions were also highly important in the process of mobilising political support, and this thesis emphasises that participation in these elections was a collective effort; men and women from all levels of society were significant political actors. Moreover, this thesis demonstrates the importance of competences such as knowledge about the organisation of crowds and political violence in the performance of the election.

The diploma thesis deals with medial images of selected events of the Ukraine War and their comparison in selected Ukrainian, Russian and Czech media. The aim of the diploma thesis is to identify, describe and compare medial images of key events of the Ukraine War in selected intelligence portals with various political orientation. The assumption is that there probably exist alternatives in opinion of the official Russian position in the frame of the Ukrainian and Czech media discourse. The first part of the thesis deals with theoretical concepts that are connected with propaganda and state-organised communication, and specifies the differences among them. Furthermore, a design of the research is introduced. The analytical part provides results and the content analysis detections in medial statements that were published in selected media between 20th February 2014 and 31st December 2014. The conclusion summarises the main detections of the research and their assets in the field of a propaganda survey.

The main goal of this thesis is to present what led to the formation of the Marxist theory of propaganda, describe its development and potential changes in the approach to propaganda during the reference period. Further goals are to describe the sources of the theory of propaganda, the concern of the official institutions and the people who dealt with propaganda. The research is based on the archive materials from the National Archives of the Czech republic and the Slovak National Archives, and on the works about the theory of propaganda. The central figure of this thesis is Miloslav Chlupáč, who dealt with the theory of propaganda in the whole reference period and who was influential to the most phases of the development of the theory of propaganda. The reference period begins with the changes in the society after the year of 1948, with the main concern being science, education and propaganda; and first contributions to the theory of propaganda, which were based on the socio-political situation in the 1950s. With using archive sources, there has been introduced comprehensive information about structure, functioning and educative activities of this institution. Explained on the situation of the first district, there has been presented the real influence on Czech population and protectorate culture. Publishing activities are closely analysed with the sample of several journals with using the qualitative research method of grouded theory. Result of this qualitative research is a summary of main propagandistic ideas in these texts.

Churchill’s plays incorporate intensity, complexity, and imagination to create a theatrical landscape that is rich in danger and possibility. Examining her plays through the theoretical lens of Antonin Artaud’s “theater of cruelty” allows an open investigation into the way that violence, transgression, and theatricality function in her work to create powerful and thought-provoking pieces of theatre. By creating her own contemporary “theater of cruelty,” Churchill creates plays that actively and violently transgress physical, social, and political boundaries. This paper examines three of Churchill’s plays spanning over thirty years of her career to investigate the different ways Churchill has used concepts of Artaudian cruelty to layer and complicate the theatrical experience, and each offers a different vision of a modern “theater of cruelty.” A Mouthful of Birds provides a starting point for exploring Artaudian concepts in connection to her work and uses physical, embodied cruelty as a catalyst through which the characters must come to terms with their subjectivity in a system which has allocated their rightful “place” in society. Hotel incorporates the same magnitude of cruelty into everyday rituals and mundane actions, and an Artaudian reading reveals the way in which an ‘invisible’ cruelty acts on both the characters and the audience as a form of erasure through which the “vanished” characters “signal through the flames” in an attempt to re-assert their subjectivity. In Seven Jewish Children, Churchill inverts the cruelty and re-enacts onstage the Artaudian ‘double’ of the terror occurring during the Gaza conflict in order to force the characters and audience into a direct relationship with the cruelty. Using Artaud as a framework through which to investigate Churchill’s work foregrounds the way in which the interplay of cruelty rips apart the commonly accepted cultural norms on which our understanding of the world is based and opens complex and multi-faceted possibilities of interpretation and understanding that are absolutely necessary for investigating the intensity of the theatrical experience in her plays.

This study offers a close look at Andrew Niccol’s (b 1964) satirical film S1mOne from a biocultural perspective emphasising the technological simulation of a Hollywood celebrity and the farce ensuing from her creation. The film is based on Niccol’s assumption that the hypertrophied culture into which he places his cultural object will be one in which human traits of sociality will be well advanced and the highly demanding genre of satire will be entertaining, persuasive, and on occasion punitive in its ridicule of Hollywood. The study makes a contribution to the idea that a cultural object/text operates as a rapid mechanism for propagating cognition — it shows how Niccol has adapted to less than optimal conditions in his world of Hollywood — in this case he parodies the role of the director of Hollywood films in the figure of Taransky. Cognition is understood as that series of mental processes which include attention, memory, learning (from mimicry as well as other forms), problem solving, ratiocination, and making decisions. Niccol relies on his audience's embodied capacities and skills of recognition, thinking, feeling, remembering, and accounting for his message to be understood. Niccol’s technical skill in editing his narrative to emphasise the satire of the narrative of Taransky and Simone is a critical part of the film’s success. Interpersonal and social propagation of cognition is achieved through reference to other cultural artefacts recalling a variety of similar ideas used in film and other visual creations. The cultural significance of the simulacrum, Simone, is that she is a vehicle for and a form of socially propagated cognition. The powerful imagistic impression of film helps to structure internalised cognitive artefacts in the viewers who are expected to reflect on their habits of viewing and thinking. When a film, artwork, poem or novel is analysed, then such a cultural object becomes a vehicle of and for propagating cognition.

Abstract:
This study sought to investigate and to record any recurring patterns in the form and communicative impact of Shona advertisements. Motivation to carry out the study came from a realisation of a growing interest in using the Shona language for advertising and the fact that very few studies have been done on Shona advertisements. For methodology, examples of Shona advertisements were qualitatively analysed using some communications and discourse analysis approaches of the speech act theory and text linguistics. A structured interview with advertising agencies randomly selected and a questionnaire on the impact of advertisements were also used. The findings of the research included that Shona was used in advertisements in order to reach out to the majority of the Zimbabwean population. In addition, Shona was also found to have been developed enough to handle formal issues like advertisements. This finding further shows that Shona advertisements reflect an instance of diglossia leakage from Shona L(ow) to Shona H(igh). Another finding is that Shona advertisements reflect some characteristics of the Shona speech community in form. These include code-switching, slang and word- division problems. An innovation in code-switching noted in some Shona advertisements is the use of three languages, namely, English, Shona and Ndebele in one advertisement. It was also established that everything about the elements of Shona advertisements communicate. For instance, the message may be visual, tactile and olfactory. It also emerged that the Shona commercial advertisements had a presenting and a hidden agenda at the same time. To achieve this the advertisements used persuasive techniques such as advertising claims, cultural hooks and personalities as spokespersons. It was also noted that most readers of advertisements do not interpret them up to the hidden persuaders but end with the direct meaning. On the other hand the Shona advertisements that gave information such as health issues have no hidden agenda. One recommendation made is that advertisements be read and studied to raise the level of awareness about the persuasive techniques used in order to distinguish between misleading advertising and those that give useful information. Some recommendations were made for future research such as carrying out similar studies of informal Shona advertisements, advertisements by n'angas/inyangas (traditional healers), prophets and political campaigns.

This Grounded Theory study focused on understanding how South Africa’s two numerically-dominant political parties, the African National Congress (ANC) and Democratic Alliance (DA), used micro-blogging site, Twitter, as part of their electioneering arsenal in the 2016 municipal elections to promote party-political digital issue ownership within an urban context. Using each party’s 2016 election manifesto and corpus of tweets, this three-phased study found that while both the ANC and DA used Twitter as a digital political communication platform to communicate their election campaigns, the DA notably leveraged the social networking site for intense ‘focused’ messaging of its negative campaign against the ANC while simultaneously promoting positive electoral messages around its own ‘core’ issues and metro mayoral candidates. ‘Battleground’ metros were identified by the DA in Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg, Tshwane and Nelson Mandela Bay, leading to an emphasised urban campaign here to either activate the party’s own support base and/ or to suppress the ANC’s turnout in these highly-contested areas. Additionally, it was found that both the ANC and DA used Twitter for explicit and implicit partypolitical issue ownership claiming in the 2016 municipal elections. Lastly, this study also culminated in the proposal of three but interconnected different elements of a conceptual framework for digital political communication that political parties could use to promote digital party-political issue ownership within a pronounced urban electioneering setting. These elements – ‘coordinating and managing how an election is tweeted’, 'focus' messaging the election’ and ‘audience-segmenting as a message-tailoring strategy’ – when used in unison can help political parties communicate better and ultimately more effectively in a highly mediatised technological media landscape
