Xu, Jia. "Subgradient projectors : theory, extensions and algorithms." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/57955.

Full text
Abstract:
The subgradient projector plays an important role in convex optimization, since the subgradient projection algorithm is a classical method for solving convex feasibility problems. This motivates us to explore fundamental properties of the subgradient projector. One can define the subgradient projector of a convex function via a selection of the subdifferential operator. This opens the door to define the subgradient projector of nonconvex functions by using the Mordukhovich limiting subdifferential operator. This thesis offers a systematic study of the subgradient projector. First, motivated by Polyak and Crombez, we present and analyze a more general algorithm for finding a fixed point of a cutter which is assumed to have a fixed point set with nonempty interior. Our results complement and extend conclusions by Crombez for cutters and by Polyak for subgradient projectors. We also present a comprehensive list of properties of the subgradient projectors which complements work by Pauwels. Special attention is given to continuity, nonexpansiveness and monotonicity. Finally, for subgradient projectors associated with nonconvex functions, we obtain various characterizations.

Kaczorowski, Andrzej. "Adaptive aberration correction for holographic projectors." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2018. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/270322.

Full text
Abstract:
This work builds up on the greatest minds of Cambridge Holography: Adrian Cable, Edward Buckley, Jonathan Freeman, and Christoph Bay. Cable and Buckley, developed an OSPR algorithm which was the first to provide high-quality real-time hologram generation using general-purpose hardware while Freeman designed a method to correct arbitrary aberrations. As ingenious as the method was, the calculations were extensively lengthy. Addressing this issue, a variant of OSPR suited for correcting spatially-varying aberration is presented. The algorithm combines the approaches of Cable, Buckley and Freeman to provide real-time hologram generation while incorporating various corrections (aberration, distortion, and pixel shape envelope). A high-performance implementation on a mid-range GPU achieved hologram generation up to 12 fps. Following topic studied is an adaptive optical correction. This work attempts to construct a set of methods, forming an automated testbed for holographic projectors. Each model, after exiting the production line is placed on such testbed, having all of its imperfections characterized. Once calibrated, each model is able to display highest-quality image throughout its life-span. An application of this work to industry was carried in collaboration with Dr Phillip Hands (University of Edinburgh) and LumeJET. Three demonstrators are constructed intending for a cost-effective system for holographic lithography. They are characterized using the developed testbed. Using the supersampled Adaptive OSPR algorithm, the diffraction limit was surpassed 2.75 times allowing to increase the patterning area. This combines approaches of Cable, Buckley, Freeman and Bay to achieve a wide field-of-view and high pixel-count replay field using off-the-shelf components. This thesis is finished describing the work on 3D holography carried with Penteract28. It is shown that the 2D hologram in the presence of spatially-varying aberrations is mathematically equivalent to a 3D hologram. The same implementation of the algorithm can be used to provide real-time 3D hologram generation.

Abstract:
The current established historiography of the field of project management dates back to the 1950s and there is little known about the development of this field prior to the Second World War. Critical scholars within this field have challenged the timeline for project management. This historical research provides evidence of project practices prior to the twentieth century by introducing the activities of projectors, who are currently unacknowledged within the field of project management. The title of projector was assigned to initiators and/or promoters of the idiosyncratic activities that combined elements of public and private gain and were known in the period as projects. The research investigates the genesis of the ‘projector' name and maps out the activities of projectors and their involvement within English industrial and economic development. Projectors and their schemes are explored through three different foci. The first focus is archival, exploring a seventeenth-century project within the textiles industry carried out by the projector Walter Morrell. This analysis highlights a number of practices within Morrell's project similar to modern project management, and potentially informs the history of project management. The second focus is through the lens of the late seventeenth-century writer and projector Daniel Defoe, whose seminal publication on projects was reprinted multiple times and consequently shaped public opinion on projectors and the undertaking of projects, this focus was socio-historical. The third focus relates to public-private interest, which played an important role in projectors’ undertakings and strongly influenced the connotation of the title ‘projector’. This theme is examined through existing PhD theses of scholars who studied the activities of projectors in seventeenth-century England. These three foci inform the contribution this thesis makes to project management history. The originality of this work is in acknowledging the activities of projectors within seventeenth century England, which has implications for project management histories.

Abstract:
The miniaturization of projection technology has enabled a new class of lightweight mobile devices with embedded projectors. Projection engines as small as a postage stamp are currently being embedded in thousands of mobile devices. Mobile projector-based devices differ in very fundamental ways from the display-based devices we commonly use. Mobile projectors can be carried with the user and project imagery into almost any space, projected content is visible to multiple users and supports social interaction, physical objects and surfaces can be augmented with projected content, and embedded projectors can enable new form-factors for mobile displays. This research investigates the potential of mobile projectors as a new platform for human-computer interaction. I aim to demonstrate that the unique affordances created by the miniaturization of projection technology can inspire new and compelling interaction with single-users, multi-users, the environment, and projector-embedded objects. This research presents a comprehensive survey of mobile projector-based interaction – documenting interaction with historic projection devices; introducing novel interaction techniques, metaphors, and principles for mobile projector-based systems; providing implementation details of functional prototype devices using mobile projectors; presenting technical innovations, such as the development of specialized projectors and custom marker tracking algorithms; and detailing results from preliminary user testing with the prototype systems created. This research forms a systematic investigation of the past, the present, and a possible future for interaction using mobile projectors.

Abstract:
Calibrating multiple projectors to create a distortion free environment is required in many fields e.g. simulators and the calibration may be done in a series different ways. This report will cover an automatic single camera projector calibration algorithm. The algorithm handles multiple projectors and can handle projectors covering bigger field of view than a camera by supporting image stitching. A proof of concept blending algorithm is also presented. The algorithm includes a new developed interpolation method building on spline surfaces and an orientation calculation algorithm that calculates the orientation difference between two camera views. Using the algorithm to calibrate, gives pixel accuracy of less than 1 camera pixel after interpolation and the relation between two views are calculated accurately. The images created using the algorithm is distortion free and close to seamless. The algorithm is limited to a controlled projector environment and calibrates the projectors for a single viewpoint. Furthermore, the camera needs to be calibrated positioned in the sweet spot although it can be arbitrary rotated.

Abstract:
As machine learning becomes an increasingly relevant field being incorporated into everyday life, so does the need for consistently high performing models. With these high expectations, along with potentially restrictive data sets, it is crucial to be able to use techniques for machine learning that increase the likelihood of success. Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA) not only extracts anomalous data, but also finds correlations among the given features in a data set, in which these correlations can themselves be used as features. By taking a novel approach to utilizing the output from RPCA, we address how our method effects the performance of such models. We take into account the efficiency of our approach, and use projectors to enable our method to have a 99.79% faster run time. We apply our method primarily to cyber security data sets, though we also investigate the effects on data sets from other fields (e.g. medical).

Abstract:
The Veo+ projector is using a cooling system that consists of fan and blowers. This system is cooling the electronic components of the device and the lamp of the projector, however extracting a high noise. To lower this noise the rpm speeds (rotational speed) of the fan and blowers should be decreased. Thus, lowering the speed will result in higher temperature values in whole system (inside the device). While lowering the speed, the higher temperature values should be kept within the thermal design specifications of the electronic components. The purpose of this thesis work is to find an optimal solution with lower rpm speeds of the fan and blowers while keeping the temperatures of the various components of the device (touch temperature of the enclosure and electronic components) within the temperature design limits. Before testing the device to find the optimum state, the design limits of the device are determined. Then, by using the design of experiment methods like Taguchi, the optimum state for the device within the design specifications is obtained. Finally, additional tests are applied within the optimum state to demonstrate a fan algorithm as a final solution. While doing the experiments thermocouples are used for measuring the component temperatures.

Roberts, Rebecca J. "'Two meane fellows grand projectors' : the self-projection of Sir Arthur Ingram and Lionel Cranfield, Earl of Middlesex, 1600-1645, with particular reference to their houses." Thesis, Teesside University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10149/254593.

Full text
Abstract:
Arthur Ingram and Lionel Cranfield were part of the early modern phenomenon of social mobility, rising from humble merchants to titled gentlemen in one generation. Cranfield, especially, reached significant heights in a matter of years. Despite the fact both men have merited biographies which chart their commercial and political careers, little attention has been paid to their lives outside of the political sphere leaving room for an analysis of their family and personal estates and the extent to which they utilised their houses in their self-projection. The originality of this thesis lies in its comparison of the two men which not only highlights their dependency on each other and mutual advertisement of each other’s image, but also opens up the question of regional disparity in house building as Ingram’s country estates were situated in Yorkshire whereas Cranfield’s were mainly close to London. The first chapter introduces the issues of social mobility, self-fashioning, and regionality, provides a literature review and explains the methodology employed. Chapter 2 looks at the careers and families of Ingram and Cranfield before examining the ways in which they furthered their ascent through the fashioning of their attire, education and learning, and social networks. The thesis then focuses on the houses of both men, with Chapters 3 and 4 considering how they built and styled their houses. Chapter 5 examines the craftsmen and materials employed by Ingram and Cranfield on their building programmes and in particular the geographical location of their houses. Chapter 6 discusses the way Ingram and Cranfield furnished their residences and how their households were related to the local community, particularly in terms of hospitality. The gardens and grounds that surrounded their houses are the subject of Chapter 7. The thesis concludes with an evaluation of the significance of Ingram’s and Cranfield’s houses in the self-projection of their image and how far the geographical location of their residences affected how successful this was.

Abstract:
This dissertation addresses the phenomenon of land grabbing - large scale investments in agriculture in developing countries - as a particular form taken by the process of agrarian transition in the context of these countries in the beginning of the 21st Century. For this purpose, the Wanbao project in Xai-Xai (Gaza province, Mozambique) is used as a case study. The Wanbao project aims at increasing agricultural productivity, namely in rice production, and it builds on a partnership between the Chinese private company Wanbao and the Mozambican state company Regadio do Baixo Limpopo. The implementation of the project implies both the concession of 20 thousand hectares in the Regadio do Baixo Limpopo area and the expropriation of thousands of peasants who relied on these lands for their subsistence. Fieldwork was undertaken in June 2013 and included 24 interviews, in Xai-Xai and Maputo, with project managers, representatives of the Mozambican authorities and civil society organizations, as well as several affected peasants. We conclude that the Wanbao project is bringing about a profound transformation of the region?s social structures which can be usefully interpreted under the light of the historical and theoretical literature on the agrarian transition corresponding to the penetration of mercantile and capitalist logics insofar as this process exhibits all the elements of that transition: expropriation; consolidation of land holdings; and (semi-proletarianization).

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: This dissertation aims at the understanding of the act of planning in perfect harmony with the physical and cultural place of Alfinetes Villa, located in Marvila, in the city of Lisbon. A Leisure Villa vacant and expectant, where we intend to carry out an intervention that supports the concept of Sustainable Heritage, recovering de heritage – a symbiosis between the new and the old. Allied to this, the concept of Environmental Education, which stands out by for its goals to raise awareness for the preservation of the human environment, its sustainable use, and its use of sustainably and in encouraging architectural achievements that are aware of their environment. From a historical and typological analysis of several case studies, we obtained the key elements for the realization of our proposed recovery of Alfinetes Villa: the implementation of a program linked to the typological roots of the original property (recreational and agricultural production), environmental education, and the marketing of their production for their livelihoods property. So it arises the Environmental Educational Center of Marvila, a program already quite widespread nationally and that we will serve the future needs of the town, for its community dimension, the creation of urban gardens that support mostly unemployed and low education population. In terms of architectural proposal, is intended an approach of emphasizing the existing main purpose and the main components of the typology of the Leisure Villa and its adaptation to a new architectural structure, intended to be one and inseparable.

Abstract:
Due to their complexity, construction projects involve significant risks thatmust be managed in order to meet the main project objectives in terms of cost, time and quality. While some risks can be foreseen at the beginning of aproject and allocated among the project actors, other risks are difficult topredict. Moreover, even identified risks may change in scope and requiredifferent types of response. In order to manage such risks successfully, collaborative efforts among project actors are needed. This thesis focuses oncollaborative management of risks in construction projects – joint riskmanagement (JRM) – which is claimed to provide several advantages incomparison to separate risk management by each project actor. An overall aimis to increase the understanding of how JRM can be enhanced throughout aproject’s lifecycle. The underlying studies this thesis is based upon constitute a multiple case studyof nine construction projects, a questionnaire survey and a longitudinal casestudy of three construction projects. Empirical data were collected throughinterviews, observations of JRM workshops and document studies. Theempirical findings show that cooperative procurement procedures, organicmanagement systems and appropriate strategies for addressing agency-relatedproblems enhance JRM in construction projects. Thus they require thoroughconsideration when organizations intend to implement JRM.This thesis provides several contributions to risk management theory. Firstly, the author extends the definition of JRM by including its core componentstogether with associated activities and underlying factors. The extendeddefinition better reflects, and increases understanding of, the nature of JRM.Secondly, the research contributes to discussion of serious drawbacks related to traditional procurement practices by identifying and studying procurementvariables (project delivery method, form of payment and use of collaborationor partnering arrangements) that have a major influence on risk management. In addition, the results of questionnaire survey suggest that cooperativeprocurement procedures in general and collaborative activities in particular arepositively related to the use of JRM. Finally, by framing the empirical resultsin an organizational theory context this research identifies two sets of factorsthat strongly influence the implementation and effectiveness of JRM, related tomanagement system (organic vs. mechanistic), and strategy for responding toagency-related problems. By applying theory on mechanistic and organicorganization to RM, the study pinpoints the importance of managing tensionsbetween control and flexibility when implementing JRM. The author suggeststhat JRM requires a combination of formal tools (aimed at controllingidentified risks) and flexible strategies (aimed at responding to unforeseenevents). Abstract:
The spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry is a fascinating phenomenon of QCD whose mechanism is still not well understood and it has fundamental phenomenological implications. It is, for instance, responsible for the low mass of the pions which are effectively Goldstone bosons of the spontaneously broken symmetry. Since these phenomena belong to the low energy regime of QCD, non-perturbative techniques have to be applied in order to study them. In this work we use the twisted mass lattice QCD regularization to compute the chiral condensate, the order parameter of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking. To this end we apply the recently introduced method of spectral projectors which allows us to perform calculations in large volumes due to its inherently low computational cost. This approach, moreover, enables a direct calculation of the chiral condensate based on a theoretically clean definition of the observable via density chains. We thus present a continuum limit determination of the chirally extrapolated condensate for N_f=2 and N_f=2+1+1 flavours of twisted mass fermions at maximal twist. In addition we study the chiral behavior of the topological susceptibility, a measure of the topological fluctuations of the gauge fields. We again apply the spectral projector method for this calculation. We comment on the difficulties which appear in the calculation of this observable due to the large autocorrelations involved. Finally we present the continuum limit result of the topological susceptibility in the pure gluonic theory which allows us to perform a test of the Witten-Veneziano relation. We found that this relation is well satisfied. Our results support the validity of the Witten-Veneziano formula which relates the topological fluctuations of the gauge fields with the unexpectedly large value of the eta''

In the western societies, there has been a lot of investigation around the body since 1980. The body as a whole concept tends to become a resource that can be worked upon at the will of the individual, and one of the common ways to change the body aspect is through tattoos. Tattoos suffered a big transformation in their graphics, social and symbolical design in the last decades of the twentieth century, which contributed to the standardization of the changes that can be made to the human body. Men and Women were slowly but surely attracted by the general idea of getting tattoos, and as these were spreading throughout the different social classes they earned new insightful meanings. In a consumerist society with strict rules when it comes to behavior, individuals are forced to follow standardized body projects. Furthermore, when we speak about heavily tattooed bodies, we can acknowledge that these individuals deviate from the previously determined standards. And if we focus on women, these almost seem forgotten about their tattoos, especially the heavily tattooed bodies create a silent social phenomenon within the same consumerists societies. This scenario makes the study of the phenomenon a useful and prolific way of understanding tattoos in a social context, and possibly generate more interest surrounding this subject. Our work tries to identify the role of tattoos in the foundations of the female identity. Our objective consist of: identifying the reasons that take women to get tattoos, understanding the importance and visibility of these body changes and their social, professional and personal context. Using a methodology based on qualitative procedures, with a special focus on data recovered from in-depht interviews to women who have highly visible tattoos that are hard to hide in a public scenario. Our findings revealed that women with an overwhelming number of tattoos, have gained new body projects that are not contained inside the norms of society. Tattoos are a clear representation of the "I", as well as a way to show the criteria in which the "Self" can express itself, showing a disdain towards the social pressure. These body changes create an image that each individual wants of his own body and also raises their self-esteem as a result of set changes. Ultimately the will of pursuing each personal projects prevails over any behavior or beauty standards.

The research projects are one of the main investigation vehicles all over the world. In Portugal the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) is responsible for periodically opening public calls for funding research projects in the science domain areas. The Information Systems (IS) projects are framed in the management area and represent an approval rate below the average. The following investigation try's to analyse how the research projects in the IS area, running in a FCT call, contemplate the various evaluation criteria. This way, the principal objective of the investigation goes through analyzing the research projects on the IS area running in a FCT call, through a set of seventeen evaluation criteria for research projects, created on the literature review. The methodological approach used in this investigation is qualitative, because it "implicates an emphasis in the processes and meanings" (Garcia e Quek, 1997, p.451). This way, it's effectuated an exploratory case study, having has base the IS research projects that runned for the FCT support, through the calls on all the scientific domains in 2004, 2006 and 2008. At the final results level it's possible to analyse the profiles of the seven approved projects, we should expect a more complete filling of the various evaluation criteria In another prism, it's possible to understand the subjectivity that the diverse criteria's of evaluation have, giving more emphasis to the capacities and knowledge of each evaluator.

The correlative applications are proposed increasingly with the improved technique of projector manufacture. The projectors can not only provide functions of flat panel display, but also create special visual effect, for instances movie theaters, 3D projection, surrounding display, projection performance, and visual reality, which are hardly implemented by flat panel displays. However, this kind of applications depends on high-level projectors. Gradually, the researches about multi-projectors system are taken seriously therefore. First, the conventional multi-projectors system are discussed in the chapter one of this study, some of them makes the projections side by side through regulating the placements of projectors; others feedback the position of projectors by using a high-resolution camera. However, these two common methods have their own advantages and defects. Hence, an Auto-Calibration Multi-projectors System aimed to the situation above is provided in this paper. When combining the projections of multi-projectors, brighter regions are usually appearing due to the overlaps of projections, and the projections are distorted by the keystone effect because of improper projector placements. Consequently, after building the system structure, to ensure the final combined projection is smooth and continuous for vision, the edge blending technique for removing the brighter regions and homography matrix in order to calibrate the distortion of projection are introduced in the chapter two. After simply understanding the two techniques, the chapter three first proposes the system flow of the Auto-Calibration Multi-projectors System and deeply expatiates on the principles and theories mentioned in chapter two. Nevertheless, the brighter region turns into darker contrarily if the original edge blending technique is applied directly to the projection overlap. Therefore, a webcam is used to observe the properties between projectors and build a corrected edge blending weighting table. On the other hand, the pre-calibrated images are obtained by utilizing modified homography matrix according to distortion of each projector fedback from the webcam. To further improve the accuracy of projection combination, a projection test pattern is adopted to enhance the relative resolution and avoid using the unideal part of webcam image. The chapter four provides experiments to prove the techniques mentioned in chapter three. The first experiment is single projection calibration which makes sure the homography matrix obtained from webcam calibrates the projection correctly; next, edge blending weighting tables are built from the properties between projectors, and then put the tables into test; the third experiment applies the result of the former two to 2×2 multi-projectors and checks the exactitude of outcomes; finally, in order to improve the convenience of the system, webcam calibration is proposed and calibrates the distortion due to improper webcam placement. The chapter five concludes each experiment and proffers solutions. Expect the achievements of this paper can implement a low-cost and simple Auto-Calibration Multi-Projectors System to advance the practicability of projectors

To produce a large screen, one economical way is using multiple projectors to tile. However, each projector has its individual luminance and color characteristics due to different electronic components and light bulbs. The tiled screen then appears the non-uniform color and luminance and has blocking effect. In this study, we use a camera to capture the tiled screen, and propose two automatic calibration methods to resolve the non-uniform color and luminance problems. At last, we generate the feedback control signal to the multiple projectors through the RS-232 port to automatically adjust the projectors. The first method is gamma curve adjusting method, it uses lowest lightness projector to produce known gamma lookup table, and then use this table to individually adjust the gamma curve of each projector; the second method is color coordinate adjusting method, it adjusts color coordinate of primary color of each projector directly. The first method needs to adjust every step of gamma lookup table, it seems hard; the second method needs to use integrated circuit built-in feature, the portability is not so good. Each method has both advantages and disadvantages. Users need to decide what method will be adopted by their application.

Even though the market for projectors is dominated by corporate customers, it has recently expanded to include household customers. Moreover, because of continued advances in integrated circuits and semiconductor technologies, miniaturized electronic components and projection technologies have enabled the growing use of micro projectors. This study investigated heat-transfer designs for the air inlets and outlets of light-emitting diode micro projectors. Specifically, this study explored how to ensure the optimal air flow rates for inlets and outlets under forced convection generated by a built-in fan, identify the optimal positions for the inlets and outlets, and allow hot air to be removed efficiently from projectors. A portable electronic micro projector was used. This projector contained lithium batteries; aperture criteria for inlets and outlets were specified to satisfy the aperture requirements of the case. The heat-transfer design method and procedure demonstrated in this study can be used to improve the heat transfer characteristics of micro projectors, to reduce the cost of their development, and to simplify and expedite their development.

The projector industry is now developing towards lightness and portability; with the current commercialization, its product bulk is almost that of a mobile phone. But since it is easy to carry, projectors are often dropped due to carelessness; the most common defects are cracking and breakage to the cover. The subjects of study in this paper were commercialized pico-projectors. They were tested according to CNS drop test specifications to verify whether the design of its cover could withstand breakage inadvertently caused by users dropping the product. This study aimed to further explore this phenomenon and analyze the possible causes for cover defects. Strengthening began from the design end, while computer-aided engineering software simulation was used to confirm the results. Then a drop test was performed with actual products on the market, the results of which were finally compared with the computer simulation analysis results. Two methods for improvement were discovered; changing the cover material to a material with better rupture strength properties, and re-designing its structure for increased strength. The results and experience gained may be used as feedback in the design guidelines for product development, thus enhancing overall product quality further.

When one estimates the throughput of the light valve LCD projectors prior to constructing prototype, the efficiency for each component in the LCD projector is specified. However, efficiency for the lamp-reflector combination is lacking, which in fact is among the most important factors to estimate the efficiency of the light valves projector. It is crucial because it represents how many lumens are coupled into the systems that are collected by the reflector. This factor varies, depending on how the system is designed. It is also related to the size of the source, the area of the aperture stop of the system, and the F/# of the system. Those geometry parameters influence a quantity we call it Etendue, which is a French word means ''optical extent'' or ''optical invariant''. Adopting Etendue concept, the system designer will be able to estimate the throughput of the light valve projectors completely. In this paper, we will provide an innovative method estimate efficiency via the use of the collected lumens from the source-reflector combination, based upon the Etendue concept.

In view of the fact that LED projectors use only three primary RGB colors, while suffered from the shortcoming of low output flux and troublesome cooling system design. We therefore, in this paper add another cyan color spectrum LED to make picture more colorful and brighter in order to extend color gamut and increase output flux as well. Besides, nowadays many researches discussing LED illumination projection system are focused on no more than mixing three colors, to have uniform effect with light guide. An optical component X-cube is then used to get mixing effect by stacking three colors. But these constructures are still too big and the cooling system can be very complicated. Therefore, we design an innovative illumination system in this paper, it is not only achieving same effect and is even richer in color. The total volume is only 95 and the cooling system becomes simpler. We used Lumileds series LED to design the illumination system. We calculated the positions and specification of the interior reflective parts in the light guide, according to the geometrical optics. Finally, we confirmed results using TracePro software and performed to analyze.

Typical projectors are used for business presentation and rear projection TV applications. They are not well suited for personally portable use or use for small groups in an informal setting. The use of projectors in LED pocket-sized projection display system promises to be a much more significant innovation. This paper presents that we replace Light Emitting Diode (LED) with the light source of general projection display, and design a new optical engine structure. In this case single red (R), green (G), blue (B) LEDs are used to create a 3 primary display. Injection-molded acrylic collimators redistribute the light. Then RGB colors are recomposed of by Dichroic X-CUB. A condenser lens is designed to focus the light onto the entrance of newly developed U shape integrator rod to have output light uniform; in this reseach, U shape rod is firstly introduced in this paper due to the minimization of optical system. A relay lens set working with TIR prism, will keep the light path onto the 0.55” DLP™ panel-DMD. TIR prism is employed as an angular analyzer for light from light vale and relay lens that separate the image and the illumination light by angle. In order to test the performance of the whole optical engine, we design two set of projection zoom lens for the illumination system and light valve system. Include system output luminous flux, illumination uniformity performance, and the packing size of the system. In this design, project image on the screen has its projected size in 17”~22” and its objective distance is approximate 600mm. To achieve maximum efficiency and effectiveness in the product design, we applies the integration of Taguchi methods and PCA and the Taguchi methods coupled with the powerful approach that combines PCA and fuzzy logic analysis to optimise multiple quality characteristics of a LED pocket-sized projection display system. A set of optimal design parameters will be developed to produce the best results on the system.

The application of multi-projector is often seen in a large exhibition. In general, multi-projector display system should be manually installed and calibrated by human. It is time-consuming and non-adaptable for the environment variation. We proposed a camera-based automatic multi-projector stitching method and implemented it into an embedded multi-projector display system. The system is consisted by a master controller and two or multiple slave controllers. The master controller captures the display images from all the projectors by camera and executes the geometric calibration and the brightness calibration for the overlap projection region between two projectors. The slave controllers serve for the display control of individual projector. Finally, a seamless multi-projector automatic stitching system is realized. Experiments show that our embedded multi-projector display system has good stitching quality as well as excellent synchronization mechanism.

This study embedding two different shaped piezoelectric fans into the micro projector as cooling devices to investigate the cooling effect of micro projector with various placed orientations, fins, blades material and operating frequency. The micro projector is experimented in a horizontally or vertically oriented and the two piezoelectric fans are placed in two heights, where those are placed 19mm and 26mm. Furthermore, the operating frequency ranges are depending on blades shape and material. The operating frequency ranges of narrow mylar, wide mylar and wide aluminum respectively are from 129.5 Hz to 135.5 Hz, 71.5 Hz to 86.5 Hz and 121.5 Hz to 145.5 Hz. The result showed that when piezoelectric fans are unactuated, vertically oriented cooling effect is better than horizontal placement. Moreover, the thermal resistance of the tested micro projector in vertical placement was descended where it was placed in heights 19 mm and 26 mm, the drop values are between 0.27 ℃/W and 1.61 ℃/W, and 0.15 ℃/W and 1.62 ℃/W respectively. Piezoelectric fans is acutely influenced by heat, especially when the micro projector was in horizontal placement, wherefore the piezoelectric fan amplitude change with different heat source power from 2 W to 7 W will be discussed. The result indicate that narrow mylar piezoelectric fans with array pin fins can achieve the lowest thermal resistant of the tested micro projector, where it is in vertical placement and furthermore the working frequency of piezoelectric fans is at 133.5 Hz. In the above case, the drop values of thermal resistant is from 3.52 ℃/W to 6.34 ℃/W, when heat source power from 2 W to 7 W. At a particular frequency, the maximum range of the thermal resistant shift is from 0.52 ℃/W to 3.92 ℃/W, when piezoelectric fan is affected by heat.

Abstract:
Motivated by these problems, we explore the potential of projectors in interactive information visualization and processing in this thesis. In particular, we make three contributions. First, we propose a computer vision solution for direct 3D object exhibition and manipulation without the user wearing spectacles. In our approach, a new 3D display interface is designed by projecting images on a hand-held foam sphere which can be moved freely by the user. By tracking the motion of the sphere and projecting motion-dependent images onto the sphere, a virtual 3D perception can be created. Using this interface, the user will experience as if he is holding the real object in hands and be able to control the viewing angle freely.
Second, we extend the projection on traditional rigid screen to projection on flexible surfaces. A new flexible display method is proposed, which can project information on a hand-held flexible surface (e.g. an ordinary white paper with a checker pattern at the back) that can be twisted freely. While the user twists the projection surface, the system recovers the deformation of the surface and projects well-tailored information onto the surface corresponding to the deformation. As a result, the viewer will see the information as if it was printed on the paper. Two applications, the flexible image projection and curvilinear data slicing are created to demonstrate the usefulness of the method. After the studies on fixed-position projection, we conduct an investigation on mobile projectors, which is becoming especially necessary with the rapid popularity of mobile projectors. We propose a hand-held movable projection method that can freely project keystone-free content onto a general flat surface without any markings or boundaries on the displaying screen. Compared with traditional static projection systems that keep the projector and screen in fixed positions, our projection scheme can give the user greater freedom of display control while producing undistorted images at the same time.
The recent trend of human-computer interaction technologies has revealed the potential of the projector as an powerful interaction tool. More than a pure display tool, a projector has great strength that can change largely the way a traditional user interface works. Although some possibilities have been investigated in previous work, certain applications and approaches deserve further studies. For example, 1) Projection showing 3D information: viewing 3D models is usually achieved by projecting polarized light of different phases for left and right eyes, and the user is required to wear specially designed spectacles. The cost of building such a system is high. 2) Projection on flexible surface: most existing systems display information on flat rigid projection screens, extending it to non-planar flexible surfaces is an interesting and useful research direction; 3) Direct user-info interaction: existing systems using mouse and screen have limited freedom of control and low level of user experience. Direct manipulation of the display object by the hands of a user is more natural; 4) Mobile projector display: portable or embedded projectors are becoming more and more popular, but some fundamental problems, e.g. the keystone correction, are not fully studied.
To verify the correctness of our methods, we built prototype systems using off-the-shelf devices and conducted extensive experiments, including both simulation and real experiments. The results show that the proposed methods are effective and good performance has been achieved. In particular, the real-time speed and low-cost requirement make it quite appealing in many application areas, such as education, digital games, medical applications etc. Capitalizing on the shrinking size, increasing portability, and decreasing cost of projectors, it is predictable that projector-based interactive processing will become more and more popular in the near future. We believe the research work in this thesis will provide a good foundation for further research and development on computer vision and projector-based applications.

Abstract:
Quantum systems with variables in the ring Z(d) are considered, and the concepts of weak mutually unbiased bases and mutually unbiased projectors are discussed. The lines through the origin in the Z(d) x Z(d) phase space, are classified into maximal lines (sets of d points), and sublines (sets of d(i) points where d(i)vertical bar d). The sublines are intersections of maximal lines. It is shown that there exists a duality between the properties of lines (resp., sublines), and the properties of weak mutually unbiased bases (resp., mutually unbiased projectors).

Rose, David Emile Vatcher. "Categorification of quantum sl_3 projectors and the sl_3 Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant of framed tangles." Diss., 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10161/5592.

Full text
Abstract:

Quantum sl_3 projectors are morphisms in Kuperberg's sl_3 spider, a diagrammatically defined category equivalent to the full pivotal subcategory of the category of (type 1) finite-dimensional representations of the quantum group U_q (sl_3 ) generated by the defining representation, which correspond to projection onto (and then inclusion from) the highest weight irreducible summand. These morphisms are interesting from a topological viewpoint as they allow the combinatorial formulation of the sl_3 tangle invariant (in which tangle components are labelled by the defining representation) to be extended to a combinatorial formulation of the invariant in which components are labelled by arbitrary finite-dimensional irreducible representations. They also allow for a combinatorial description of the SU(3) Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev 3-manifold invariant.

There exists a categorification of the sl_3 spider, due to Morrison and Nieh, which is the natural setting for Khovanov's sl_3 link homology theory and its extension to tangles. An obvious question is whether there exist objects in this categorification which categorify the sl_3 projectors.

In this dissertation, we show that there indeed exist such "categorified projectors," constructing them as the stable limit of the complexes assigned to k-twist torus braids (suitably shifted). These complexes satisfy categorified versions of the defining relations of the (decategorified) sl_3 projectors and map to them upon taking the Grothendieck group. We use these categorified projectors to extend sl_3 Khovanov homology to a homology theory for framed links with components labeled by arbitrary finite-dimensional irreducible representations of sl_3 .

Over the past few years a considerable number of studies have been made on building large, high-resolution displays. The aim of this thesis is to build a seamless large-scale display system by tiling multiple projectors with the help of a pan-tilt-zoom camera. It adds to the display world by combining different techniques to create a large, high-resolution, and low-cost display system. This research takes two tasks into consideration when producing the seamless display: (1) the geometric calibration and (2) the photometric calibration. Here, I develop a vision-based approach to accomplish these tasks by utilizing a pan-tilt-zoom video camera. Compared to previous work, my method for geometric calibration is more accurate because I have a much higher resolution (because I combine several zoom-in images). And it does not require a camera calibration, nor does it require the 3D geometry estimation of the display surface. As opposed to using the spectroradiometer, an expensive device previously used for color calibration, a camera is used due to its low cost. I take advantage of high dynamic range image to estimate the real color, and with a mapping between it and the colorimeter. With photometric calibration, the color across the different projectors will become uniform. This system has great potential for many applications that require large format and high resolution display, such as scientific visualizations and visual display wall.

Vourdas, Apostolos. "Random projectors with continuous resolutions of the identity in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space." 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/17437.

Abstract:

Random sets are used to get a continuous partition of the cardinality of the union of many overlapping sets. The formalism uses Möbius transforms and adapts Shapley's methodology in cooperative game theory, into the context of set theory. These ideas are subsequently generalized into the context of finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. Using random projectors into the subspaces spanned by states from a total set, we construct an infinite number of continuous resolutions of the identity, that involve Hermitian positive semi-definite operators. The simplest one is the diagonal continuous resolution of the identity, and it is used to expand an arbitrary vector in terms of a continuum of components. It is also used to define the function on the 'probabilistic quadrant' , which is analogous to the Wigner function for the harmonic oscillator, on the phase-space plane. Systems with finite-dimensional Hilbert space (which are naturally described with discrete variables) are described here with continuous probabilistic variables.

A compact projection system, using separated RGB LEDs as light sources, is designed mainly by cementing fly-eye arrays on the surfaces of X-cube prism, which is helpful for not only shrinking the system volume but also increasing the energy efficiency by reducing the reflection loss on optical surfaces. For constructing the initial first-order design of the illumination component, the focal lengths and dimensions of corresponding elements are solved by the optical invariant principle. The next step is to compare the influence on the uniformity for condensers with the same focal length but different lens shapes. Thirdly, condensers are optimized and analyzed for each primary colors. For imaging component, two types of telecentric lenses with purely spherical surfaces are designed. One design is not offset but the other provides offset ability to correct the keystone distortion. Eventually, both illumination and imaging parts are combined and the overall illumination uniformity on the projection screen is discussed.

In this thesis, the modulations on LEDs driving current and duration ratio of RGB-LED-array as light source for pico-projector display were proposed. The light source that we use in this study is OSRAM LE ATB S2W. We perform our light source in consideration of three orientations, power consumption, brightness, and color temperature. Two designs for different projection types, low power-consumption and high brightness, are proposed. Both types are designed to achieve color temperature of 6500K. For a low-power-consumption type, the light source is able to supply 47 lm with color temperature of 6530K at only 0.85-watt power consumption. For high-brightness type, 78.08 lm flux output with color temperature of 6700K is achieved at 2.53 W. Only 5 % difference in brightness and 3 % difference in color temperature between design and measurement. Furthermore, we program a computation tool to simplify computations of prominent appropriate RGB duration ratio from inputting different objective color temperature and driving current of each LED. It also shows brightness and color space results.
