Abstract:
Even for the most well-intentioned companies, the commitment required for the initial drafting of a plan is a real barrier to developing a useful schedule for a construction project. This paper explores how artificial intelligence and expert systems have and can be used for automating the generation of plans and schedules. Findings from a thorough literature review and observations about the general characteristics of projects provide a backdrop to explain the reasoning that has led to the authors' approach to developing a module capable of generating draft plans and schedules. This approach combines expert systems with large building blocks of predefined project scoping, sequencing, and scaling knowledge contained in standard templates and rules. It relies on templates to store much of the reasoning needed to produce a project plan and schedule, and on the use of generalized planning structures as activities. A draft schedule can then be automatically generated by way of a relatively simple rule set that assigns activity property values dealing with physical locations and production rates, as well as other project scale related values. The role of a physical model or view of a project is emphasised.Key words: construction, scheduling, project management, expert system, template, automated schedule generation, rule based, computer integration.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore how implementing a standardized/owner-mandated template for Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC) contract amendments can minimize errors. The focus is on public owners who manage multiple CM/GC projects at any one time. Design/methodology/approach – A case study format was used to compare contract amendments errors using a baseline project, transition project and best practices project. Six metrics were identified, including factual recital errors, summary formatting errors, schedule of values errors, construction services fee errors, allowance schedule errors and data consistency errors. Findings – The baseline and transition projects both had an average of seven errors per amendment, while the best practices project produced zero errors. The amendment template creation process helped design out common errors. The use of the template can be contract-mandated, while transition projects require owner commitment. Research limitations/implications – Future research should focus on completed projects’ closeout data that have been consolidated since the transition project was in its final stage and the best practices project was relatively early in the construction process. Practical implications – The findings of this research indicate that by implementing a mature owner-mandated CM/GC contract amendment template, owners can greatly reduce errors that arise during the amendment process. It should be noted, however, that challenges will most likely occur during the implementation phase. Originality/value – No similar studies were found and the results of the research informs Facilities Management departments that they can significantly reduce errors by utilizing a mature, owner-mandated template for CM/GC contract amendments.

Abstract:
From the project of the date and time reading in the Radar images, the OCR templates technique was applied because some Radar images do not have date and time information in their properties. The method had the problems that the Radar images could not be retrieved when the month names are changed and then the new month name templates had to be created. Therefore, this work has applied Tesseract OCR library to help read the date and time images and used Fast Normalized Cross-Correlation theory to enhance the performance of the template matching and to retrieve more Radar images. The accuracy of results in this program using Fast Normalized Cross-Correlation with OCR templates was 86 percent.

Abstract:
Simulation is a powerful tool for decision making. It provides an appealing approach to analyze and improve repetitive processes such as tunnelling. Notwithstanding this appeal, application of simulation to real-life construction projects has been minimal. This paper describes the design, development, and application of a special purpose simulation tool for actual tunnel construction operations performed by the City of Edmonton Public Works Department. The implementation of this tool in industry was successful and serves as a model for others to follow. The decision-making process adopted by the model developers and the construction industry personnel during the design, development, and implementation of the simulation are described. The cost-planning tool in the tunnel template is very useful in making decisions and evaluating the feasibility of tunnel construction projects. The real-life application of various alternatives compared to the conceptual estimates prepared for a proposed tunnel project to be constructed in Edmonton is presented in three stages. The basic costs, operational costs, support costs, productivity, duration, and resources utilization data are presented for different alternatives for the proposed tunnel project. Future modifications required by the engineering staff of the City of Edmonton, and the proposed research for modelling uncertainties in tunnel construction are identified. The successful application of the simulation for actual construction project highlights the interactive collaborative research work between academia and industry.Key words: simulation, tunnelling, construction, modelling, planning.

Abstract:
Modern innovations in public administration of construction provide significant modernization of the industry on the basis of engineering and project management - the introduction of the role of consulting engineer. This role involves a wide range of communications between all stakeholders in the investment and construction process. It may be relevant to use an information tool for modeling the product and construction processes - design and technological templates - to measure the effectiveness of these communications and, accordingly, to measure the effectiveness of the consulting engineer. The article contains the analysis of reserves of optimization of investment and construction process and the description of possibilities of these reserves realization by means of constructive-technological templates. The main provisions of the concept of " constructive technological template in construction" were described and presented as information tool for construction management. The scheme of software interaction within the concept of "constructive-technological template in construction" and the scheme of knowledge management by the consulting engineer were developed. Indicators and ways to increase the efficiency of interaction between the consulting engineer and stakeholders were shown. The indicators of efficiency of the consulting engineer under the condition of using constructive-technological templates were substantiated. The developed concept and schemes allowed to investigate the interactions of stakeholders in construction production. It is shown that when using the concept of "constructive-technological template in construction" the consulting engineer can perform a triple managerial role at a qualitatively new level. As a BIM manager, he must manage the knowledge of investment and construction activities. As a commercial specialist - must meet the requirements of participants during construction. As a construction project manager, he carries out strategic leadership and operational organization and control of construction production. On this basis, the indicators of economic and technical effect of the consulting engineer as a manager of the investment and construction process were substantiated.

The appearance quality requirements of As-cast Finish Concrete has become highway project structure standard; And we successfully developed the multi-function DGT-1 spraying wall composite steel template through the designs of different templates and contrast test research of template surface treatment; Engineering has proved that concrete structure used the template pouring not only can reach the requirements of As-cast Finish Concrete in appearance quality, but also have larger of advantages in turnover number, convenience of using, speeding up engineering progress, environmental protecting, and savings costs.

This paper provides guidelines for data management professionals and researchers on how FAIR data usage can help improve the planning, execution and overall success of a cross-institutional project. Cases from Danish cross-institutional projects are detailed to illustrate this point – as well as the lessons learnt with implementing FAIR data principles in such projects. Key learnings from this paper are: Using FAIR data principles in cross-institutional projects can help manage the data used in the project in terms of knowledge sharing, access rights, use of templates, metadata and further sharing the data after the project has ended. To benefit the most from using FAIR data in a cross-institutional project it should be considered and planned for early in the project process. If FAIR is not considered early in the project process problems can arise such as a lot of time spent on converting formats, obtaining permissions and assigning metadata. It is necessary for researchers and research projects to have infrastructure and other services in place which support FAIR data usage.

AimsTo improve communication with patients and carers by sharing information in an easily comprehensible manner.BackgroundAccording to the department of health guidelines, there is legal requirement to provide copies all clinical correspondence to the patients. Therefore, after any clinic review, letters summarizing the consultation are sent out to GP and patients are copied in. However, these are not very meaningful for patients with special needs, as they struggle to comprehend information. Previous studies have shown that patients with learning disability would prefer letters in a simple language and would also like to participate in the decision making process. According to Accessible Information Standard, we have a legal obligation to deliver information to our service users in an easily understandable manner. We undertook a quality improvement pilot project of easy read templates to improve the understanding of patients and their carers/families.MethodA standard easy read template was co-produced after collecting feedback from different service users and clinicians. Pictures were incorporated into the questionnaire to facilitate understanding. We collected reviews over a period of 2 months from Nov 2019- Dec 2019. This proforma did not replace the routine clinic letter send out to the GP and the patients. This easy read template began with the introduction of the doctor (with photograph) and it encompassed mental health, physical health, current medication (and the benefits and side effects if any) and changes of medication. It also included epilepsy and the risks (risks to self and to others), vulnerability, behaviours of concern and the day-to-day activities that a service user engages in and finally about the plan formulated at the end of the consultation. At the same time, there was a separate form (with self-explanatory pictures), which collected feedback about the above mentioned appointment outcome review form.ResultTemplates were handed out to 65 patients and carers, and 60 completed the form. All patients found the template useful and helpful, mainly because it was easily comprehensible, with pictures, and also “provided instant updates”.ConclusionThis easy read template improves patients’ understanding and participation in the clinic review. This contributes to greater patient satisfaction. As Specialist Learning Disability services, we need to ensure that information is imparted to the patients and the carers in an easily understandable manner and this easy read template should be incorporated in the routine clinic practice.

Programinės įrangos kūrimo projektų dokumentacijos kūrimas dažnai vykdomas neefektyviai – dokumentai kuriami lėtai, esama dokumentavimo metodika būna perteklinė, nėra vieningos dokumentacijos kūrimo strategijos. Vienas iš būdų paspartinti dokumentų ruošimo procesą – panaudoti šiame darbe suformuluotus nurodymus bei principus. Taikant sukurtus dokumentų šablonus, dokumentaciją galima generuoti tiesiai iš projektavimo įrankio. Šiuose šablonuose realizuotas papildomas funkcionalumas – projekto kūrimo ir testavimo darbų apimčių skaičiavimas bei elementų ryšių vientisumo nustatymas, o tai svarbu vertinant projekto kokybę ir planuojant kūrimo darbus. Sukūrus projektą, dokumentacija automatiškai sugeneruojama panaudojant projektavimo įrankio, pavyzdžiui, MagicDraw UML, teikiamas dokumentų generavimo priemones, todėl nereikia atskirai kurti dokumentacijos teksto redagavimo priemonėmis. Sukurtąjį dokumento šabloną galima pakartotinai panaudoti kituose projektuose.
Creation of documentation usually is inefficient - documents are being created slowly, the methodology of documentation is usually redundant, there is no common strategy for this. The paper proposes a way to boost the process of creating documentation by using documentation templates that give an opportunity to generate documentation directly from a CASE tool. The created template implements additional functionality - the estimation of a size of programming and testing tasks of a project and tracing the dependencies between project's elements. The implemented template of a document may be applied in more than one project.

Abstract:
The Master's thesis Transformation of the microprocessor's description language to the hardware description language is aimed at design of application specific microprocessors with using ISAC language. It deals with design and implementation of transformation which converts description of microprocessor in ISAC language into equivalent description in VHDL language. The chapter Summary of research problems describes chosen problems, showing up some notions connected with problems and presents suggestion of transformation mentioned above. The chapter Suggestion of solution presents new extension of ISAC language. There is also described the way of design solution of transformation and solution of implementation of VHDL generator which performs transformation. Conclusion of thesis discusses next points of future work reached results.

In their quest for a more efficient and effective utilization of the resources allocated to engineering design projects, and thus to the overall product development project from which the current design task(s) originate, an increasing number of companies allow engineering designers to perform Computer-Based Design Analysis (CBDA) on their own — CBDA is here confined to quantitative analyses using finite element-based structural and thermal analyses, Computational Fluid Dynamics, and Multi-Body Systems. Since all of these tools require a certain level of expertise in order to be successfully utilized in industrial practice, the types of analyses performed by the engineering designers are confined to simple, straightforward ones. In striving for an increase of the individual engineering designer’s possibilities to actively participate in CBDA in industrial practice, an online survey has been carried out and reported in [1]. The main objective set out for this survey was to give an overview of the current situation in the global industry regarding CBDA tasks being performed by engineering designers, what positive effects they might present to the industry and how they should be implemented for best result. Resulting from this survey, one new type of support, Template-Based Design Analysis (TBDA), was singled out as very promising for future development. TBDA is a support to be used in engineering design analyses based on the utilization of the advanced features provided by high-end Computer Aided Design (CAD)/Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) software in supporting and guiding as well as monitoring the design analysis performed by the engineering designer. Since TBDA is still in its infancy, substantial development needs to be invested in it to make it the full-blown support needed in industrial practice. To be able to contribute to the development of TBDA, it is essential to acquire knowledge about how companies, both national and international, are planning to introduce and utilize TBDA in industrial practice. It is likewise of importance to acquire knowledge of the arguments against an introduction of TBDA. To that end a new online survey has been carried out, focusing on the introduction and benefits as well as the disadvantages associated with an implementation of TBDA. The survey was sent to 64 recipients, 41 of whom were selected from the previous survey [1] and 23 came from Swedish companies known to the authors to utilize CBDA on a regular basis. The limitation to Swedish companies was due to practical as well as economic reasons, as these companies were also invited to participate in interviews. The main objective set out for these interviews was to get an in-depth view on the outcome of allowing engineering designers performing CBDA/TBDA in industrial practice. An additional objective was to get an indication as to the validity of the responses obtained in the online survey by comparing the results from the interviews with the responses given by the companies to the survey. 42 of the 64 recipients, from 17 countries, completed the survey. All of the invited Swedish companies completed the survey. However, due to the risks associated with revealing proprietary information during the interviews, only 5 out of the 23 companies were willing to participate in the interviews. The introduction of TBDA in an industrial setting has resulted in many advantages, such as shorter lead times, opportunities to generate more concept candidates, and increased collaboration between the engineering designers and the design analysts, all of them contributing to more mature technical solutions. Three different automation levels of TBDA have also been identified and accounted for as well as exemplified. In the companies in which TBDA has not been implemented, some of the reasons for not doing so are high costs, company policy, and the lack of knowledge and experience on the part of the engineering designer. This paper presents the results from both the new online survey and from the interviews.

Abstract:
This paper reports the progress made in a parametric design and rapid meshing system (PADRAM) developed under two recent UK national sponsored research programs. PADRAM is designed to parametrically change the blade geometry and rapidly generate body-conformal high-quality viscous meshes. This allows speeding up the CFD loop by making the meshing process fully automatic on the basis of pre-designed templates. The geometry parameterisation is done within the mesh generator, making its integration within the optimisation loop straightforward. The paper presents examples that demonstrate how incorporating real geometry features into PADRAM is fundamental to achieve numerical models closer to reality. This is key factor in trusting the CFD solution and making use of it to further improve current designs. It also shows that feature-based structured mesh is good for cases that need to be repeatable across sites and teams, where consistency of the mesh is crucial and quick answers required to cope with tight project deadlines. The incorporation of additional complex geometrical features limits the applicability of the template structured approach and can be sometimes at the expense of mesh quality. In this regard, novel unstructured meshing technologies have been developed and implemented into PADRAM in order to deal with non standard and complex configurations. Two of these methods are presented in this paper (i.e., Zipper Layer and Delaunay Cavity). The paper shows how these can be used to paste together various multi-block structured meshes, hence providing the most suitable meshing topology to be used for each component separately. This makes the PADRAM code a unique meshing tool, able to combine the advantages of the template-topology approach to the flexibility of fully unstructured meshes. A number of supportive examples is reported in the paper.

In July 2011, the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP)awarded the project entitled “Reduction of Total Ownership Costs Through Application of Design For Maintenance (DFM) and Repair Methodologies Project” a collaborative shipyard-led research project, supported by Bollinger Shipyards(Prime), BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards, Vigor Shipyards, the Trident Refit Facility in Kingsbay, GA, General Dynamics Electric Boat, General Dynamics NASSCO, and the Naval Center for Cost Analysis at NSWC-Carderock. Through this customer-centric project, nearly 40 DFM workshops were held with the deck-plate repairers at public and private shipyards across the US to identify major maintenance cost drivers, maintenance cost reduction opportunities, and deliver design rules to reduce total ownership costs to ship owners based on Design for Maintainability (DFM) principles. This paper will provide an understanding of the process used to develop the DFM information and will discuss the DFM principles applied and highlight the “good practice” design rules that resulted from this effort. The paper will also describe the Cost Benefit Analysis process and templates developed through the project, along with provide an appreciation of the potential cost benefits associated with the implementation of DFM principles. The DFM database, also developed through the project, with over 1000+ repair-based cost reduction strategies will also be highlighted.

Conceptual design of multidisciplinary systems begins with a description of requirements and proceeds with a solution at a high abstraction level. A systematic and rigorous approach is required to evaluate complex systems and can be achieved by mapping the interactions between disciplines. Research has shown that the use of geometry in the early stages act as enablers for high fidelity analyses as required information can be extracted from the model. In the paper, Knowledge Based Engineering is used with the aim of managing the added complexity as it supports design automation and reuse. This article describes a configuration tool, which allows for quick generation of train geometry using High Level CAD Templates. The tool was created as part of a research project, with the primary objective of the development of a robust framework for a Multidisciplinary Design Optimization process which can support design of high-speed trains.

BIM uses are complex specific processes in architecture, engineering, construction, and operation mediated by Building Information Modeling technologies. Several initiatives are dedicated to detailing these uses in a standardized way, enumerating and describing them in terms of scope, benefits, process maps, required competencies, associated technology, and theoretical framework. Examples of these efforts are Penn State's Computer Integrated Construction Research Program (MESSNER et al., 2019), buildingSMART (2021), and BIM Excellence Organization (SUCCAR; SALEEB; SHER, 2016). This study presents the approach to educate, evaluate and assist Model Uses using templates (Model Use Templates - MUT) of the BIM Excellence Initiative (BIMe). The BIM use is called Model Use in BIMe terminology. In three years, starting in 2021, the initiative intends to detail all the domain model uses listed by the organization (BIMe, 2020). The domain model uses are organized in the series of capture and representation, planning and design, simulation and quantification, operation and maintenance, monitoring and control of buildings and infrastructures. In terms of domain model uses, there is the linking and extending series of BIM integrated to Facility Management, interfaced with the Internet of Things, linked to Enterprise Resource Planning, etc. The initiative developed a Construction Domain Model Use Template (MUT) and applied it as a demonstration for Clash Detection or MUT 4040. This summary will describe the template, its application to Clash Detection, and guidance on how to transform it into a template class to teach Clash Detection with BIM. The MUT consists of an extended description, software list, activity flow, and bibliography. This content is available in the BIM Dictionary associated with the equivalent term (https://bimdictionary.com/en/clash-detection/1). The extended description includes the corresponding term's definition, the detailed description, purpose, and an available online media-list. The detailed description presents the different types of use (e.g., hard, soft, time-based) and benefits. The software list lists platforms and environments used in the model use development. For each platform or environment, there is a list of the vendor or developer, the corresponding technical functionality, the applicable discipline, the software description, the availability of the software in the cloud or location, differentiation of versions, the link to the official website, the model use code that the software can support, specific functionalities associated with the use and availability of a plugin or extension. The activity flow is described using a process map and details in up to 3 hierarchical levels for each macro activity. All the terminology adopted in the MUT is semantically aligned to the various projects and initiatives of BIM Excellence, bringing consistency to the meaning. In the case of MUT 4040, that is, the application of the template for the model use of Clash Detection, the short description is a “Use of the Model representing the use of 3D Models to coordinate different disciplines (e.g., structures and air-conditioning) and to identify/resolve possible conflicts between virtual elements prior to actual construction or fabrication”. The extended description presents the Clash Detection as automated or semi-automated procedures to identify design errors in 3D models, where objects occupy the same space or are too close to violating spatial restrictions. Time-based interferences are conflicts involving temporary objects that compete for the same space at the same time. The benefits are listed, for example, like better project coordination and quality; conflict reduction in the workplace; acceleration of design and delivery processes; and cost reduction through productivity increase. The available online media does not represent the entire process involved in Clash Detection and are generally restricted to confronting models on specific platforms. We advocate that the activity flow should structure the class of model uses in BIM education. In this way, there is a holistic and representative approach to practice. Thus, we advise escaping this model's understanding in a restricted and instrumental way, as it already occurs in most of the online media found. We propose to organize the class program by the macro stages of the activity flow, covering: (i) creation of the strategy for the clash detection in the project in question; (ii) preparation of specific models for federation; (iii) identification of federation environments or model integration; (iv) federation or integration of models; (v) checks for interference in the federated or integrated model; (vi) analysis of the conflicts identified; and (vii) referral to conflict resolution. The details of each of these activities in the template can guide the teacher on how to proceed or prepare educational content. The bibliography listed in the template covers the theoretical framework to support the class in terms of books, scientific articles, and BIM guides. One can develop the class at the level of graduation, extension, or continuing education. Being an undergraduate class, it can be mandatory or elective. Items (i) to (iii) make up the theoretical part of the class, and the rest are essentially practical content. Thus, two types of competency assessment are possible: knowledge and skills. Knowledge can be developed through discussions and seminars. Skills covered are associated with execution or domain skills, according to Succar, Scher, and Willams (2013). Execution skills are associated with learning model verification platforms and collaboration environments. The execution competence generates an instrumental skill that can be provided through individual online training with tutorials. Domain skills are essentially technical (analysis and simulation) and functional (collaboration). These skills must be instigated in a participatory and collaborative way in practical exercises involving cycles of verification of the federated model and adjustments of complementary projects' models. As a suggestion for support material, the teacher should prepare a dataset including models with errors in file naming disobeying conventions, errors in the control elements impacting the overlapping of models, errors of omission or duplication of elements in the models, and errors of data schema in terms of categorization of elements and classification of content. The models must also include issues of all types (hard, soft, and temporal interferences). Errors must be plausible to be identified by different types of verification: visual or script. This paper presents a novel approach for the configuration and runtime usage of user interfaces or Human Machine Interface (HMI) systems based on research being conducted at the Distributed Systems Group, Loughborough University. This research is investigating the replacement of conventional PLC/PC systems with a Component Based control approach suitable for the automotive engine manufacturing industry. HMI (operator interface) systems for production machines must effectively fully support an increasingly complex machine lifecycle involving engineering input from many globally distributed engineering partners. Current HMI Systems are standalone offering poor connectivity and requiring highly specialist skilled personnel to develop and maintain the systems. The goal of Component Based (C-B) systems is to compose machines from modular units with embedded intelligence. The “intelligence” has different functional domains, e.g. sequencing and interlocking logic, 3D virtual modeling, visualization, diagnostics, service and operating interfaces, etc. The underlying framework of the C-B paradigm is a common model system repository where all components are stored. This facilitates visibility of the system common model to all the globally distributed engineering partners involved in a given project. Within the C-B framework, HMI systems are composed from instances of reusable software templates that are targeted at specific user types. User targeted operator interfaces offer a common look and feel that improves usability. The machine’s configuration is achieved by populating a series of HMI templates to produce a complete machine HMI system. A thin-client architecture is used based on server/ client internet technologies that allow the machine HMI to be executed on any internet enabled computer using a standard web browser. It is possible to drive both the real machine and a simulated 3D virtual machine model via the HMI, enabling engineers to be trained on the operation of the HMI prior to the real machine being completed.
