Abstract:
This chapter examines contemporary black public art in Chicago, including Bernard Williams's black biblical figures in the apse of Saint Edmund's Episcopal Church. As a principal artist in the Chicago Public Art Group (CPAG), Williams has been the lead restorer for most of murals by William Walker. The Saint Edmund's committee directed the content of Williams's mural at the church in relation to the newly installed stained glass program of important black heroes. Father Richard Tolliver considered murals and stained glass an integral part of his revitalization of Saint Edmund's. Williams also helped restore Frederick D. Jones's mural at the First Church of Deliverance (FCOD) and created a number of local community murals. The chapter concludes with a discussion of Damon Lamar Reed's mural ministry consisting of murals, graffiti, rap music, and T-shirts. Like the conflations of the black Christ with the pastor at Pilgrim Baptist Church and FCOD, Reed's work merges the painted image of Jesus with that of a real black body, the one within the T-shirt.

Weisner, Thomas S. Culture, Context, and the Integration of Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in the Study of Human Development. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190879228.003.0004.

Abstract:
The cultural community a child grows up in is arguably the most important influence in a child’s development. Culture and context should be incorporated into every research program in human development in our field. Ecocultural theory links structural and environmental conditions to the cultural learning environments of children and the everyday routines and activities that shape behavior and the minds of children. To do this, we require strong mixed methods, designs, samples, and analytical approaches. The world certainly is not linear, additive, and decontextualized, although for analytical purposes we can usefully model the world as if it were. This chapter discusses five research programs that use ecocultural models and integrate qualitative and quantitative methods: rural-urban migration and effects on parenting and children’s development in Kenya; sibling caretaking; countercultural families and children in California; families with children with disabilities in California; and interventions to support working poor families in Wisconsin.

Abstract:
The publication, which is the culmination of a European project carried out under the Erasmus Plus Programme, presents the city as a place of culture, heritage and sustainable development, a place where tradition and modernity mingle and where heritage is integrated with new forms. It is a place where cultures meet, but also a place where the inhabitants draw vitality, which is a source of identity; finally, it is a place where new generations are raised. The book shows life in the city as a composition of places of memory, which binds the past, the present and the future into a coherent whole (…). This book not only stimulates the reader's reflection on the city, inspiring them to their own reflections and cultural explorations, but it can also be an excellent textbook for students exploring the mysteries of cultural studies, anthropology, sociology or urban planning. prof. Abstract:
Increasing focus on sustainable societies and ‘smart cities’ due to emphasis on mitigation of climate change is simultaneous with ‘smart regulation’ reaching the forefront of the political agenda. Consequently, the energy sector and its regulation are undergoing significant innovation and change. Energy innovations include transition from fossil fuels to more renewable energy sources and application of new computer technology, interactively matching production with consumer demand. Smart cities are growing and projects are being initiated for development of urban areas and energy systems. Analysis from ‘Smart Cities Accelerator’, developed under the EU Interreg funding programme that includes Climate-KIC,——provides background for the focus on a smart energy system. Analysis ensures the energy supply systems support the integration of renewables with the need for new technologies and investments. ‘Smart’ is trendy, but when becoming ‘smart’ leads to motivation that is an important step towards mitigating climate change.

Wang, Changlu, Chow-Yang Lee, and Michael Rust, eds. Biology and Management of the German Cockroach. CSIRO Publishing, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9781486312078.

Full text
Abstract:
As a species, the German cockroach is one of the most widespread indoor urban pests worldwide. While numerous products have been developed to control their spread, German cockroaches continue to contaminate food, transmit disease and cause significant, long-term economic expense to homes, restaurants, hospitals and more. Biology and Management of the German Cockroach summarises the many advances in management technology, products, delivery systems, and basic and applied research over the past 25 years. Leading researchers explain why the German cockroach is a medically important pest and how its microbiome can provide new insights on cockroach physiology and potential novel targets for control. The authors also address the research from a practical standpoint, detailing why baits have replaced sprays as the primary method of control and how population genetic studies allow for better understanding of cockroach dispersal and population structure. Leading experts on integrated pest management (IPM) explore how studies on German cockroach control programs demonstrate the value and feasibility of IPM in urban environments. This book provides the reader with a comprehensive understanding of the German cockroach and will be a valuable reference for researchers, graduate students, pest management professionals, health workers and government agencies dealing with urban pests and pesticides.

Reyes, Rene, R. Sanhueza, Alejandra Schueftan, and Eric González. Consumo de leña y otros biocombustibles sólidos en la región de Aysén: adopción acelerada del pellet en la ciudad de Coyhaique y predominio de la leña en el resto de la región. 14th ed. INFOR, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.52904/20.500.12220/31338.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Who makes decisions that shape the housing, policies, and social programs in urban neighborhoods? Who, in other words, governs? This book offers a rich ethnographic portrait of the individuals who implement community development projects in the Fairmount Corridor, one of Boston's poorest areas. The book uncovers a network of nonprofits and philanthropic foundations making governance decisions alongside public officials—a public–private structure that has implications for democratic representation and neighborhood inequality. The book's author spent four years following key players in Boston's community development field. While state senators and city councilors are often the public face of new projects, and residents seem empowered through opportunities to participate in public meetings, the author found a shadow government of nonprofit leaders and philanthropic funders, nonelected neighborhood representatives with their own particular objectives, working behind the scenes. Tying this system together were political performances of “community”—government and nonprofit leaders, all claiming to value the community. The author argues that there is no such thing as a singular community voice, meaning any claim of community representation is, by definition, illusory. The author shows how community development is as much about constructing the idea of community as it is about the construction of physical buildings in poor neighborhoods. The book demonstrates how the nonprofit sector has become integral to urban policymaking, and the tensions and trade-offs that emerge when private nonprofits take on the work of public service provision.
