The monograph examines the diversity and convergent similarity of adaptations to typical habitat conditions of the main representatives of social insects: termites, ants, paper wasps, bumblebees and bees. Trophic connections, methods of nest construction and protection, intra- and interspecific relations, forms of manifestation and origin of social relations are considered. The species-specific mechanisms of spatial orientation and communication, the role of programmed and modifiable behavior in the life of families of social insects are analyzed. The phylogenetic ways in which the transformation of families of eusocial insects into integral biological units, individually subject to the action of natural selection — the main driving factor of evolution - took place are discussed. Abstract:

This chapter discusses the 1950–64 period, during which Italy’s convergence to the productivity frontier proceeded at the fastest pace in its history. This burst of catch-up growth—the so-called ‘economic miracle’, which radically transformed Italian society—was driven by TFP growth. Though largely unreformed, the country’s economic institutions sustained structural change, technology absorption and adaptation, and intense capital accumulation. The weakness of this transitory growth model—for which the unlimited supply of labour from the agricultural sector was a critical condition—emerged when the North-West approached full employment. In 1962–4 an ambitious attempt to reform Italy’s economic institutions was defeated, also through means—including the threat of a coup d’état (Piano Solo)—that revealed the persisting profound inefficiency of its political institutions. The synchrony between the country’s progress through the stages of its development and the evolution of its economic institutions was thus broken.

Abstract:

This chapter analyzes immigration reform and the knowledge worker recruitment aspects of the Hart–Celler Act of 1965 to track the intensifying convergence of educational exchange programs, economic nationalism, and immigration reform. During the Cold War, the State Department expanded cultural diplomacy programs so that the numbers of international students burgeoned, particularly in the fields of science. Although the programs were initially conceived as a way of instilling influence over the future leaders of developing nations, international students, particularly from Taiwan, India, and South Korea, took advantage of minor changes in immigration laws and bureaucratic procedures that allowed students, skilled workers, and technical trainees to gain legal employment and eventually permanent residency and thereby remain in the United States.

There is a great diversity among welfare states in Europe. This diversity is reflected in the scale of expenditures for social protection systems, their evolution over time and the division of expenditures among programs. This chapter analyses the level and structure of expenditures for the last year for which data is available. Then, it turns to the evolution of social expenditure over time. Even though one observes some convergence, social spending is increasing in almost all countries. One of the reasons for this is the development of entitlements that makes it difficult to dismantle programs that have lost most of their raison d’être. Another issue concerns the international comparison of programs that are public in some countries and private, but heavily subsidized, in others.

This concluding chapter shows how the recent building programs of the New York Times, the Hearst Corporation, and Time Warner demonstrate the importance of corporate image-making through architecture that was established in the news business in the 1870s. These buildings stress transparency and an abiding faith in new technology, and invite the audience once again to participate in the spectacle of media production and consumption. Demographic shifts in readership and the digitization of news have led these large corporations to meet an uncertain future with consolidated real estate holdings in buildings designed to adapt to new media, convergence, and user-created content using a century-old template.

In Soundscapes of Liberation, Celeste Day Moore traces the popularization of African American music in postwar France, where it signaled new forms of power and protest. Moore surveys a wide range of musical genres, soundscapes, and media: the US military's wartime records and radio programs; the French record industry's catalogs of blues, jazz, and R&B recordings; the translations of jazz memoirs; a provincial choir specializing in spirituals; and US State Department-produced radio programs that broadcast jazz and gospel across the French empire. In each of these contexts, individual intermediaries such as educators, producers, writers, and radio deejays imbued African American music with new meaning, value, and political power. Their work resonated among diverse Francophone audiences and transformed the lives and labor of many African American musicians, who found financial and personal success as well as discrimination in France. By showing how the popularity of African American music was intertwined with contemporary structures of racism and imperialism, Moore demonstrates this music's centrality to postwar France and the convergence of decolonization, the expanding globalized economy, the Cold War, and worldwide liberation movements.

Abstract:

The Living Machines approach, which can be seen as an exemplar methodology for a wider initiative towards “convergent science,” implies and requires a transdisciplinary understanding that bridges from between science and engineering and to the social sciences, arts, and humanities. In addition, it emphasizes a mix of basic and applied approaches whilst also requiring an awareness of the societal context in which modern research and innovation activities are conducted. This chapter explores the education landscape for postgraduate programs related to the concept of Living Machines, highlighting some challenges that should be addressed and providing suggestions for future course development and policy making. The chapter also reviews some of the within-discipline and across-discipline programs that currently exist, particularly within Europe and the US, and outlines an exemplar degree program that could provide the multi-faceted training needed to pursue research and innovation in Living Machines.

Abstract:

Abnormalities of the cilium, termed ‘ciliopathies’, are the prime suspect in the pathogenesis of renal cyst formation because the gene products of cystic disease-causing genes localize to them, or near them. However, we only partially understand how cilia maintain the geometry of kidney tubules, and how abnormal cilia lead to renal cysts, and the diverse range of diseases attributed to them. Some non-cystic diseases share pathology of the same structures. Although still incompletely understood, cilia appear to orient cells in response to extracellular cues to maintain the overall geometry of a tissue, thereby intersecting with the planar cell polarity (PCP) pathway and the actin cytoskeleton. The PCP pathway controls two morphogenetic programmes, oriented cell division (OCD) and convergent extension (CE) through cell intercalation that both seem to play a critical role in cyst formation. The two-hit theory of cystogenesis, by which loss of the second normal allele causes tubular epithelial cells to form kidney cysts, has been largely borne out. Additional hits and influences may better explain the rate of cyst formation and inter-individual differences in disease progression. Ciliary defects appear to converge on overlapping signalling modules, including mammalian target of rapamycin and cAMP pathways, which can be targeted to treat human cystic kidney disease irrespective of the underlying gene mutation.

Abstract:

Beyond Interdisciplinarity examines the broadening meaning, heterogeneity, and boundary work of interdisciplinarity. It includes both crossdisciplinary work (encompassing multi-, inter-, and trans-disciplinary forms) as well as cross-sector work (spanning disciplines, fields, professions, government and industry, and communities in the North and South). Part I defines boundary work, discourses of interdisciplinarity, and the nature of interdisciplinary fields and interdisciplines. Part II examines dynamics of working across boundaries, including communicating, collaborating, and learning in research projects and programs, with a closing chapter on failing and succeeding along with gateways to literature and other resources. The conceptual framework is based on an ecology of spatializing practices in transaction spaces, including trading zones and communities of practice. Boundary objects, boundary agents, and boundary organizations play a vital role in brokering differences for platforming change in contexts ranging from small projects to new fields to international initiatives. Translation, interlanguage, and a communication boundary space are vital to achieving intersubjectivity and collective identity, fostering not only pragmatics of negotiation and integration but also reflexivity, transactivity, and co-production of knowledge with stakeholders beyond the academy. Rhetorics of holism and synthesis compete with instrumentalities of problem solving and innovation as well as transgressive critique. Yet typical warrants today include complexity, contextualization, collaboration, and socially robust knowledge. The book also emphasizes the roles of contextualization and historical change while accounting for the shifting relationship of disciplinarity and interdisciplinarity, the ascendancy of transdisciplinarity, and intersections with other constructs, including Mode 2 knowledge production, convergence, team science, and postdisciplinarity.

Abstract:

The long-term success of health intervention programs for self-management is often compromised by the difficulties felt by participants to maintain adherence to prescribed behavioral changes. Mixed methods research can expand understanding and the insights of complex health research problems such as self-management in chronic conditions. The purpose of this paper is to share key contents of a symposium focusing on the application of mixed methods research in the context of person-centered education, held during the 6th World Conference on Qualitative Research. More specifically, it aims at: 1) exploring examples of implementing mixed methods research in health interventions for self-management of chronic conditions and other health risks; 2) promoting insights and knowledge on the ‘why and how of combinations’ in mixed methods studies; and 3) exploring the valuable role of qualitative strands in mixed methods in the wider context of health research. Three studies are explored as examples of application of mixed methods in self-management programs, considering the experiences of participants for changing self-care behaviors and challenges faced for maintaining such changes. Convergent and explanatory sequential designs have been used, combining questionnaires and semi-structured interviews for data collection. Data analysis included procedures such as thematic analysis and descriptive statistics (examples 1 and 3), and thematic analysis and descriptive/inferential statistics (example 2). Results show how mixed methods designs can contribute to develop self-management strategies, to be considered in planning future interventions, and to expand understanding about their impact as well. Likewise, these examples emphasize why mixed methods can bring added value both to process and results of health research. Thus, exploring the application of mixed methods into a wider context is of utmost importance since the complexity of health phenomena is growing and requires equally complex research designs to capture them.

Currently there is growing interest in the application of dynamical methods to the study of cognition. Computation, Dynamics, and Cognition investigates this convergence from a theoretical and philosophical perspective, generating a provocative new view of the aims and methods of cognitive science. Advancing the dynamical approach as the methodological frame best equipped to guide inquiry in the field's two main research programs--the symbolic and connectionist approaches--Marco Giunti engages a host of questions crucial not only to the science of cognition, but also to computation theory, dynamical systems theory, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of science. In chapter one Giunti employs a dynamical viewpoint to explore foundational issues in computation theory. Using the concept of Turing computability, he precisely and originally defines the nature of a computational system, sharpening our understanding of computation theory and its applications. In chapter two he generalizes his definition of a computational system, arguing that the concept of Turing computability itself is relative to the kind of support on which Turing machine operate. Chapter three completes the book's conceptual foundation, discussing a form of scientific explanation for real dynamical systems that Giunti calls "Galilean explanation." The book's fourth and final chapter develops the methodological thesis that all cognitive systems are dynamical systems. On Giunti's view, a dynamical approach is likely to benefit even those scientific explanations of cognition which are based on symbolic models. Giunti concludes by proposing a new modeling practice for cognitive science, one based on "Galilean models" of cognitive systems. Innovative, lucidly-written, and broad-ranging in its analysis, Computation, Dynamics, and Cognition will interest philosophers of science and mind, as well as cognitive scientists, computer scientists, and theorists of dynamical systems. This book elaborates a comprehensive picture of the application of dynamical methods to the study of cognition. Giunti argues that both computational systems and connectionist networks are special types of dynamical systems. He shows how this dynamical approach can be applied to problems of cognition, information processing, consciousness, meaning, and the relation between body and mind.

En este sentido, los autores abordan la caracterización de las destrezas y habilidades de un emprendedor, desde la experiencia y vivencias de los participantes del estudio en la comunidad el Fortín. El mismo, se constituye en un aporte muy significativo para los emprendedores comunitarios, ya que les permite explorar sus fortalezas y aquellas circunstancias en la que deberán hacer énfasis en su mejora; con el propósito de fortalecer su capacidad de adaptación y respuesta al entorno. En el Capítulo 2, se ofrece un acercamiento a la aplicabilidad de los fundamentos de calidad, desde experiencias en el sector textil. Al respecto, se aborda la generación de lineamientos que ofrezcan a emprendedores de este sector, herramientas faciliten la definición de procesos, control, seguimiento y previsión en la asignación adecuada de recursos. La investigación es muy pertinente ya que caracteriza y precisa muchos de los procesos desarrollados en la empresa caso estudio, configurando una serie de lineamientos que fortalezcan su capacidad; en correspondencia con la buena disposición de la organización para profundizar y mejorar todos sus procesos. El Capítulo 3, desarrolla una interesante experiencia en facilitar Estrategias didácticas para el acompañamiento del proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje, en el contexto de una organización social vinculada al ámbito educativo. Esta propuesta resulta muy significativa, ya que implica la sensibilización organizacional en torno a las tendencias de marketing que orientan el servicio a sus clientes, utilizando técnicas y herramientas que caractericen el perfil de sus servicios en búsqueda de estándares permanentes de calidad e innovación. Con líneas sencillas de intervención, se persigue fortalecer áreas desempeño a corto plazo, fundamentando acciones que conlleven actividades estratégicas a futuro. El Capítulo 5, precisa líneas maestras convergentes en un Plan de administración gerencial para el fortalecimiento de los programas de formación social del convento Madre Dorotea. Así, desde la loable labor de esta organización social, sus integrantes, asumen el reto de integrar conceptos y acciones que promuevan indicadores que mejoren su perfil en programas de gran impacto social. Una experiencia investigativa gratificante. Todas estas experiencias, hablan de la contribución de la academia al fortalecimiento social, desde acciones efectivas de sensibilización, actualización y profundización, desde la aplicabilidad, sobre conceptos de la gerencia moderna adaptados a las particularidades organizacionales de las iniciativas organizacionales participantes, en un ejemplo importante que evidencia la relación de las Instituciones Universitarias con la comunidad, desde la responsabilidad social empresarial.
