Abstract:
The Swedish Armed Forces is one of Sweden's largest government agencies. Approximately one third of all employees are civilians and its strategic focus is currently to grow and the proportion of civilian managers is increasing. This study explores the dynamics, conditions and frictions for collaboration, between military and civilian leadership within the military profession, in order to create a deeper understanding of their impact on operational outcome. One of the main duties for civilian managers is to support and increase the efficiency of the work for the Swedish Armed Forces. When it comes to operational management civilians have the same authority as the officers in a frictionless environment. The organization benefits of the collaboration between civilian and military leadership, when the operational is running smoothly. Despite a collegial approach, civilian and military managers have different point of views regarding their norms and values. At a contingency escalation, the demands on the personnel in the Swedish Armed Forces elevate. The civilian personnel will switch to military personnel and the civil managers then have legal support to make decisions about the use of force, although this may be directly inappropriate. The basic presumptions between civilian and military leadership are becoming more diffuse and less clear. The staff structure and mandate conditions need to be reviewed. There must be prerequisites for mission-type tactics, and the distribution between core and support activities needs to be investigated. The civilian managers must be given the opportunity to understand the military context and the tensions between the professions in the military profession must be dealt with. The core of this thesis is an empirical mapping of data, which were obtained through interviews. The study is based on a qualitative research method with an inductive approach where the final analysis is inspired by Grounded Theory.

Miller, Bradley Dean 1959. "Literacy in contexts of transnational professional practice: The case of the globalized professions in the United States." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/282805.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the last fifty years, literacy and its study have moved considerably beyond the ability solely to read and write; it may be now viewed as a centrally mediating factor to interpret the signs engraved into the texts of our experiences and the fulcrum to participate more fully in our public and our private worlds. Among these realms of literacy, the world of work has borne witness to incredible changes in the form and content of professional occupation. With growth in global political, economic and technological interdependency, transfer of knowledge and professionals across borders accelerates and becomes more prevalent. Addressing the professional domains of literacy practices, this is a descriptive study designed to investigate how professionals experience and use literacy, be they literacy skills (technical knowledge or expertise) or literate behaviors (practical knowledge or know how) in transnational contexts of practice. Using an ethnographic methodology and multimethod strategies (informant interviews with professional stakeholders from the regulated, globalized professions in the United States in construction and design, business and finance, allied health, and technology and engineering; published professional development international training program curriculum review; and focus group sessions with accreditation, licensing and certifying body officials addressing the need for guidelines for professionals in transnational practice) data gathering and analysis are focused on input from quality assurance authorities, faculty from professional schools, multinational corporate human resource executives, and the practitioners themselves. In the broadest sense, the study's purpose is to map the relevant dimensions of literacy in transnational professional practice in the regulatory, cultural, linguistic, technological and locational realities of another country. The results of this study indicate that across the affinity groupings mentioned above, professionals in transnational contexts of practice operate within at least five categories of literacy engagement: resources, people, information, systems, technology, with literacy skills and literate behaviors being directed principally toward working with people and within systems overseas. An array of literacy insights are also provided, drawn from thematic congruencies across the three data sets.

Carter, C. J. G. "The dynamics of organizational change : an analysis of power, professions and new managerialism in the case of CoastElectric." Thesis, Aston University, 2000. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/10742/.

Full text
Abstract:
It is widely accepted that the Thatcher years and their immediate aftermath were associated with substantive social and organizational change. The privatisation programme, 'the rolling back of the State', prosecuted by the successive Conservative Governments from 1979-1997 was a central pillar of Governmental policy. This thesis seeks to engage with privatization through the of CoastElectric, a newly privatised Regional Electricity Company. This thesis contributes to the extant understanding of the dynamics of organizational change in four major ways. Firstly, the study into CoastElectric addresses the senior management decision making within the organization: in particular, it will attempt to make sense of 'why' particular decisions were made. The theoretical backdrop to this concern will draw on the concepts of normalization, cultural capital and corporate fashion. The argument presented in this thesis is that the decision-making broadly corresponded with that which could be considered to be at the vanguard of mangerialist thought. However, a detailed analysis suggested that at different junctures in CoastElectric's history there were differences in the approach to decision making that warranted further analysis. The most notable finding was that the relative levels of new managerialist cultural capital possessed by the decision-making elite had an important bearing upon whether the decision was formulated either endogenously or exogenously, with the assistance of cultural intermediaries such as management consultants. The thesis demonstrates the importance of the broader discourse of new managerialism in terms of shaping what is considered to be a 'commonsensical, rational' strategy. The second concern of this thesis is that of the process of organizational change. The study of CoastElectric attempts to provide a rich account of the dynamics of organizational change. This is realized through, first, examining the pre-existing context of the organization; second, through analyzing the power politics of change interventions. The master concepts utilised in this endeavour are that of: dividing practices, the establishment of violent hierarchies between competing discourses; symbolic violence; critical turning points; recursiveness; creative destruction; legitimation strategies and the reconstitution of subjects in the workplace.

Abstract:
Background and problem: The introduction of New Public Management has led to changes in healthcare. Changes in purpose to reduce healthcare costs while maintaining quality. However, on the contrary, this has resulted in challenges that consist of high rates of illness, a desire for higher wages and a better working environment. Within the healthcare organization, there are several institutional logics that shape different behaviors of employees within the organization. When they meet, resistance can result in conflicts. How much the impact of institutional logics has on the employee's daily work needs to be studied more closely in order to increase knowledge about the challenges.Purpose: The purpose is to investigate how institutional logics can manifest themselves in the organization as well as influence the employee in daily work. The study intends to give healthcare organizations a deeper picture of the two ideal types, management logic and professional logic and what effects they can have on the employee.Method: Since the purpose of the study is to gain an insight into how the employee is affected by institutional logic, the study is based on a qualitative method. In order to create a deeper understanding of employees' perceptions of their social context, a case study was chosen to be conducted. The study is based on nine qualitative interviews with informants who hold various healthcare professions. Conclusion: The study shows that the two ideal types of logics, management logic and professional logic exist in the business where professional logic is most dominant. It also shows that institutional logics influence the employee in their daily work. How much depends on which logic the employee identifies with. It was also possible to distinguish that there are several professional logics in the business, which leads to tensions between different professional groups.

Mrara, Lulama. "The role of women in black family business in South Africa." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/12253.

Abstract:
Family businesses are major contributors to economies around the world. It is also recognised that family businesses are critical to entrepreneurship, socio- economic development and industrialisation around the world. Women in family business are major contributors to the success of the family business around the world. Limited research is available on the role of women in family business. The research conducted yielded similar results for South Africa. The impact of family business on entrepreneurship and the economy, with respect to socio- economic development, has placed great interest in family business studies in South Africa. This study focused on the role of women in black family business in South Africa. This research found that women in black family business focus on bringing softer skills to the business which are beneficial for people management. In their capacity as managers in the family business, women tend to take on a supportive role to the spouse; they tend to focus on ensuring a harmonious and peaceful culture in the work place. Women in family business have a dual role of ensuring business success and quality family life. They prefer to work in the shadow of their male counterparts. Challenges faced by women in black family business have been identified as the lack of inclusion in strategic decision- making, lack of decision-making career opportunities and the lack of consideration for succession within the business, a lack of business mentorship and ambiguity of roles in the business and in the family. It has been found that the role of women in black family business may be enhanced going forward. This may be done through educational programmes or workshops for management skills for women, networking opportunities and support groups, counselling on work/family management strategies, and spousal sharing of responsibilities in the work- family management relationship. A suggested area for future research is the impact of culture in family business in South Africa.

Winstone, Claire Lilian. "The meaning of the mentoring relationship which facilitates transformation of the protégé." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/25536.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated the question: What is the meaning of the mentoring relationship which facilitates transformation of the protégé? This was accomplished using an existential-phenomenological approach. The study included five adult "co-researchers" who had experienced the phenomenon being investigated and were capable of describing their experience to the researcher. The co-researchers were asked to describe their experience of the relationship with their mentor and to validate the analysis within the context of three interviews. The descriptions were tape recorded and transcribed and used as the data for the study. The analysis was conducted according to the method described by Colaizzi (1978). The themes derived from the co-researchers' descriptions were described and woven into an exhaustive phenomenological description of the mentoring relationship which facilitates transformation of the protégé. The essential structure derived from the exhaustive description was presented in a condensed statement of the meaning of the experience for the five co-researchers. Twenty-eight themes or dimensions of the experience were identified. The pattern described is a more profound and complete picture of the meaning of the experience of the mentoring relationship which facilitates transformation of the protégé than previously available in the literature.

Abstract:
While in agreement with the perceived wisdom that events during World War Two were responsible for many social changes for women in Australia, the thesis disagrees with the implication in existent Queensland women’s historiography that these changes affected women equally in all parts of the State. Research undertaken in Central Queensland provides evidence that, although some similarities existed, the conservative forces in this region restricted the liberating effect of such changes. It also addresses the subject of Queensland difference, and argues that the rural patriarchal economy sustained the notion of rigid gender and class differences in Central Queensland. It maintains that this affected women in regional Queensland to a far greater extent than those in the Brisbane metropolitan area because of the lack of secondary wartime industry and the masculine nature of rural industry. Additionally , in opposition to the widely held belief there was universal post-war financial security the thesis argues that poverty did exist. In particular it addresses the subjects of rising inflation and what has been termed the Social Security Poverty Group, basing conclusions on statistical evidence, oral evidence, and secondary and documentary sources.

Doubell, Marianne. "Factors contributing to the success of professional and business women in South Africa." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1622.

Full text
Abstract:
Women remain notably underrepresented in management and leadership positions despite the enactment of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action policies. A critical literature review yielded evidence of a multitude of barriers inhibiting women’s career advancement beyond an apparent glass ceiling, but not which of the factors constitute the major barriers. A knowledge gap was further identified in research pertaining to characteristics of successful professional women and the environments that enable them to succeed in their professions. The purpose of the current study is to expand the empirical body of research and knowledge on factors contributing to the success of professional women, and of factors inhibiting the career progression of women in business. The study extends that of Punnett, Duffy, Fox, Gregory, Lituchy, Monserrat, Olivas-Luján and Santos (2006) and of Duffy, Fox, Punnett, Gregory, Lituchy, Monserrat, Olivas-Luján, Santos and Miller (2006), conducted in the Americas, to the South African context. The study suggests a conceptual framework for investigating factors that influence professional success of women. The developed conceptual framework of factors perceived to influence professional success was employed to empirically test the relationships between the variables presented. The empirical data collected was subjected to a series of statistical tests and the results considered in testing the hypotheses. Statistica 10 was employed to analyse the empirical data collected. Univariate and multivariate tests (MANOVA) were employed to determine whether sufficient evidence existed to make conclusions about hypotheses one to five of the study, relating to differences between two success groups of women based on their demographics and the selected variables. Pearson Product Moment Correlation (Pearson r) was employed to determine whether sufficient evidence existed to make conclusions about vi hypotheses six to ten, relating to significant relationships between the selected independent variables for the study and the professional success of women. Professional success was measured as job seniority level. For the pipeline success group, professional success was measured as seniority in relation to years in the employment sector and age. The contribution of the study to management science and possible limitations are discussed and recommendations made for future research. Recommendations for the development of women and for the social transformation of organisations are made. The study identifies a number of internal organisational support factors and government interventions which are recommended for inclusion in development initiatives for the achievement of gender equity.

Li, Zelin. "A socio-technical approach for mobile health informatics together with organisational change : case studies in community healthcare service centres in China." Thesis, Kingston University, 2011. http://eprints.kingston.ac.uk/22965/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the theory of Socio-Technical Systems (STS) within the context of Information Systems (IS), a complicated field combining Information Technology and social shaping impacts. IS have been changing our society for some decades. From Office Automation (OA) to E-Commerce and E-government, IS are creating a new era of Mobilisation. Different industries have all been adopting Information Technology to enhance their business, from enterprises to public sectors. All these changes bring dramatic impacts for organisational behaviour and people's living, which need to be studied. According to academic literature, health informatics, being one of the important and complex fields in IS, started to employ mobile technical systems to improve healthcare service delivery for citizens at the start of the new Millennium. Comparing with other theoretical models in IS, the author argues that the Socio-Technical approach can explain comprehensively the new changes to organisations and society. Following the theories of STS, these case studies were decided by the researchers as field work in Chinese Community Healthcare Service Centres, where there are various mobile services for the citizens. Through multiple case studies, the author found that Leader Emphasis is one new social element in the field of the IS, while Participation, as another social element is essential to the context of this research project. These two social shaping elements, combining together within a model of STS, provide new decision making process, which is vital to a successful development of Mobile Health Information Systems (MHIS). The model has affected organisational behaviour, organisational structure, culture and society, following the usage of Mobile IS. Based on the result of the field work and the relevant literature of E-govemment, this research also concludes that M-govemment can be the transformation of E-govemment, as public service can be delivered efficiently by Mobile IS. A developing model is presented in this thesis.

Arevshatian, Lilith. ""They just don't really get it, this is a vocation and I wanna do it" : exploring the wellbeing of 'customer service' workers in healthcare." Thesis, Kingston University, 2014. http://eprints.kingston.ac.uk/28225/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis tells the tale of a special group of healthcare 'customer service' workers called the Patient Advice Liaison Service (PALS). It looks at how their job is designed and explores the impact this has, on their wellbeing by using a mixed-method research design which includes one quantitative and one qualitative study. The starting occupational level study is based on quantitative data from 138 participants using a questionnaire that measures global wellbeing, job satisfaction and psychosocial work conditions. A high incidence of strain is reported, statistically higher than that of other customer service employees and more comparable to social workers. Psychosocial conditions at work are revealed to be dire and in need of urgent action; and yet, the same group of workers report satisfaction with their job. To further unwrap the complex lived experience of PALS workers, an individual level study was conducted. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was undertaken with nine participants. Four emergent themes affirm that when it comes to their job, others just don't really get it, especially the extent of their emotion work. Changing the NHS is compared to changing a super tanker's direction and participants confess to having had a breaking point. Nevertheless, PALS staff declare that this is a vocation and I wanna do it. Reflexive interpretations suggest that some customer service employees actually engage in rather complex work that is not easily captured by the broad 'customer service' label. For individuals engaged in this type of relational work emotion work was found to be both a source of distress and motivation. Comparisons between these healthcare workers and other public sector relational workers are made and the new discourse of expertise services is proposed. Theoretical and policy implications are discussed.

Abstract:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being implemented in various industries and shows promise within healthcare. AI has potential to perform tasks that a professional would traditionally do, and it thus looks to be a disruptive technology. Professional workers, like physicians, are likely to resist such implementations to protect the high status of their profession. As professional workers and healthcare hold significant roles in society, we found that research on how they are affected by AI is needed. This study takes place in the beginning of the introduction in Swedish hospitals. To gain insight into how physicians accept and relate AI to their professional work, we ask the question ‘Do physicians see AI as a threat to their professional role?’ With an abductive, qualitative case-study approach we have conducted eight semi- structured interviews with physicians with various experience and knowledge of working with AI. Theory of institutional work for maintenance allowed for more grounding in answering our question. Further, realisations from previous studies on change served to explain why our findings did not turn out as expected. We highlight a perspective of viewing technological change as a link in a chain of events, rather than studying one implementation at a time.

Full text
Abstract:
The arrival of the Big Data era has become a major topic of discussion in many sectors because of the premises of big data utilizations and its impact on decision-making. It is an interdisciplinary issue that has captured the attention of scholars and created new research opportunities in information science, business, heath care, and many others fields. The problem is the Big Data is not well defined, so that there exists confusion in IT what jobs and skill sets are required in big data area. The problem stems from the newness of the Big Data profession. Because many aspects of the area are unknown, organizations do not yet possess the IT, human, and business resources necessary to cope with and benefit from big data. These organizations include health care, enterprise, logistics, universities, weather forecasting, oil companies, e-business, recruiting agencies etc., and are challenged to deal with high volume, high variety, and high velocity big data to facilitate better decision- making. This research proposes a new way to look at Big Data and Big Data analysis. It helps and meets the theoretical and methodological foundations of Big Data and addresses an increasing demand for more powerful Big Data analysis from the academic researches prospective. Essay 1 provides a strategic overview of the untapped potential of social media Big Data in the business world and describes its challenges and opportunities for aspiring business organizations. It also aims to offer fresh recommendations on how companies can exploit social media data analysis to make better business decisions—decisions that embrace the relevant social qualities of its customers and their related ecosystem. The goal of this research is to provide insights for businesses to make better, more informed decisions based on effective social media data analysis. Essay 2 provides a better understanding of the influence of social media during the 2016 American presidential election and develops a model to examine individuals' attitudes toward participating in social media (SM) discussions that might influence their decision in choosing between the two presidential election candidates, Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton. The goal of this research is to provide a theoretical foundation that supports the influence of social media on individual's decisions. Essay 3 defines the major job descriptions for careers in the new Big Data profession. It to describe the Big Data professional profile as reflected by the demand side, and explains the differences and commonalities between company-posted job requirements for data analytics, business analytics, and data scientists jobs. The main aim for this work is to clarify of the skill requirements for Big Data professionals for the joint benefit of the job market where they will be employed and of academia, where such professionals will be prepared in data science programs, to aid in the entire process of preparing and recruiting for Big Data positions.

Abstract:
To compete with pure online retailers and to cope with new consumers behaviors regarding the use of digital devices during purchasing processes, traditional retailers are increasingly trying to transform their business model to reach an omni-channel organization. This research seeks to understand how traditional retailers implement an omni-channel business model. To answer this initial objective, we conducted a multiple case study of five traditional retailers. Our results shed light on three main issues encountered by retailers (revenues attribution across channels, supply chain operations and communication and marketing across channels) and the different underlying decisions. In addition to this organizational level of analysis, our data collection and analysis highlighted the major importance of middle managers in improving the chances of the success of the business model transformation. This research follows an abduction process that leads to adopt a micro level of analysis and investigate how middle manager practices contribute to the implementation of an omni-channel business model. We adopted a Strategy-as-Practice/Marketing-as-Practice perspective. We analyzed our data according to Gioia method. Our results reveal four types of middle managers’ practices (creating, promoting, connecting, facilitating) aimed at ensuring business model transformation

Abstract:
To lead an organization in change is complex. Leaders today struggle with how to adapt to the digital transformational change organizations are being exposed to. Digitalization forces leaders to go beyond the traditional way of leading when professions are getting automated. This requires leaders to engage subordinates in the leadership to handle a transformational change since both subordinates and leaders are expected to adapt to technological development. Here is when the role of shared leadership becomes preferable. To investigate this complexity in the banking industry, a case study has been done. A qualitative method was used to collect and analyze the data needed to understand what leaders do to engage subordinates in the transformational change the banks are being exposed to. The results indicate that the leaders to some extent take advantage of shared leadership to involve subordinates. The findings could be applied to the shared leadership model, and the analysis shows that leaders tend to use all components to engage their subordinates, and all components are proven to be equally important. But, the analysis also shows that the banks still face challenges with being hierarchical, which inhibits the subordinates to be completely involved and engaged in the leadership. Conclusions have been made that the leaders believe they engage subordinates in transformational change, whereas not all subordinates perceive it that way.

Abstract:
Homosociality, the societal norm toward same-gender social bonding, has been hypothesized as an important explanatory variable in the maintenance of occupational segregation by gender and the low status of women in traditionally male-dominated occupations (Lipman-Blumen, 1976; Reagan & Blaxall, 1976). In this investigation of homosociality in the workplace, 257 women and 197 men employed in managerial, supervisory, professional, and technical positions in seven organizations completed a questionnaire regarding their career development and interpersonal relationships in their current organization. Predictions derived from homosociality theory and the literature and research on mentoring, friendship, and organizational networks were tested. Of the 17 hypotheses associated with five research questions, 8 were fully or partially supported, 6 were not supported, and 3 could not be tested because factor analysis did not support the variable of interest (lifetime attachment). Alpha was apportioned using the Bonferroni inequality procedure; probability levels ranged from .025 to .0025 depending on the number of significance tests conducted for each question. Analysis of variance (Gender x Gender Composition of Network) and simple main effects analysis performed on mentoring and relationship provisions (intimacy, similarity, defiance of convention, respect for differences) scores indicated one significant main effect for gender: women's same-gender networks provided more intimacy than men's. Significant main effects for gender composition were: (a) men's same-gender networks provided more mentoring than their cross-gender networks; (b) women's same-gender networks provided more intimacy than their cross-gender networks; and (c) for both genders, same-gender networks provided higher levels of similarity and defiance of convention than cross-gender networks. Correlational analyses indicated: (a) for women, but generally not for men, homosocial attitudes were significantly related to the size and activities of same- and cross-gender networks; (b) for both genders, same- and cross-gender mentoring and primarily same-gender relationship provisions were positively and significantly related to career- and job-related outcomes. Homosociality was evident in attitudes, network activities, and outcomes. Results also indicated signs of organizational gender integration. Implications for theory and counselling, and suggestions for future research, are discussed.

Ekman, Helena, and Ellinor Ralmé. "Vad motiverar professionella i olika karriärstadier?" Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Företagsekonomi, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-159660.

Full text
Abstract:
What motivates professionals in various career stages? Motivation is a relevant subject for companies to motivate and direct employees in an optimal way. Employees that are motivated are also more productive (Linder, 1998), benefitting the organization with an overall increased performance (Sekhar, Patwardhan, & Singh, 2013). There are several factors to consider when studying the motivation of people, e.g. the type of target group can affect the motivation. The aim of this study is to investigate what professionals are motivated by and further study the difference in motivation between various career stages, regarding age and title, to study their effects. The hypotheses were put forth in accordance with the framework that divides motivation into intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Furthermore, the hypotheses were tested with a validated scale (Amabile, Hill, Hennessey, & Tighe, 1994). The study is based on inquiries of professional academics within the business field of study, with 134 respondents. With an exploratory factor analysis, the motivation was divided into five factors; control and understanding, recognition, return, problem solving, and contentment. The results of the study show that the correlation between career stages and title are inconclusive. However, it was determined that professional academics, within the business field of study, are more intrinsically motivated individuals.

Abstract:
Organizational performance in the healthcare field is of great interest for many stakeholders. Efficient use of resources and delivery of high quality of care should be relevant to any taxpayer hoping to live healthily and grow old in Sweden. Simultaneously, the working conditions for the employees need to be sustainable if the impending lack of 170 000 workers in the healthcare sector by the year of 2030 is to be mitigated (Statistiska centralbyrån, 2012). The scope of this study is to examine how the quality management systems applied to ensure and improve the aforementioned objectives are perceived by the individual employees. Specifically, practitioners in the nursing professions are enquired about the design principles of enabling control as described by Adler and Borys (1996). The study has utilized a quantitative methodology and an online survey to collect personal perceptions and experiences from 400 individuals in the nursing professions on this topic. Major findings are that the majority of the respondents state that they perceive three out of four of the design principles of an enabling system to be present in the quality management system at their workplace. In addition, there is a strong association between the perception of the enabling characteristics flexibility and repair and general job satisfaction. Further studies with larger samples would increase the statistical power of these correlations. In addition, a large proportion of the respondents perceive that the quality management processes is negatively affected by financial constraints. Only a minority of the respondents perceive the workload constituted by tasks connected to quality management as reasonable.

Abstract:
In a conservative field as the law industry, where the exercise of profession is that independent that the employee becomes one's own leader and where the professional identity dominates the identity of the organisation, there is a trend to leave the company, either for another company or in order to start ones own business. In this qualitative study, we wanted to increase the understanding of identity and leadership constructed in a company in a professional field. The study was conducted at a micro business in the law industry in a small city, by semi structured interviews of the employees and the owner of the company. The empirical material and analysis has been thematised by the research questions concerning identity and leadership, and sense-making has been knitted together to discuss how these cooperate. The conclusion is that the identity of the organisation cooperates with the identity of the profession, and that is why the employees will relate to this identity, and also construct the owner, who has the ownership of the identity, as a leader.

Abstract:
Digitization is something that constantly affects society and causes tasks to change. This leadsto certain tasks being performed automatically and being replaced by more analytical tasks.Changes that take place in society result in that both the economics labor market and economicseducation need to adapt to these changes, which is not always simple. Previous research showsthat changes within universities often take longer to implement than in the labor market becauseuniversities can be sluggish. Therefore, it can be experienced that there is a gap betweeneconomics professions and economics education. This led to the purpose of the study, whichwas to create an understanding of how the content of economics education is reflected in thechanges that are taking place in the economics professions in connection with digitalization, and to investigate whether there is a gap between the labor market and economics education. In order to investigate this, a case study was conducted by the Gothenburg School ofEconomics, which is one of the largest business schools in Sweden. The theoretical frameintended to form the basis for analyzing the subject. The study was based on a qualitativemethod since the empirical collection that was carried out mainly focused on interpretation andreview of data. The purpose of the empirical data collection was to create an understanding ofwhat economics education looks like today and was collected by studying program descriptionsand syllabi at the Gothenburg School of Economics and an interview with a program managerat the same university. The results of the analysis showed that digitization appears in theprogram description and syllabi by digital tools and competencies together with that studentsgain an understanding of the effects of digitization in society. Furthermore, the results showedthat the university's changes in teaching are not always visible in the education's syllabi, whichmay be a reason why it is felt that digitalization does not take hold in the education to the extentthat it actually does.

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze whether the relationship between structural domains represented by CAATs and judgment represented by professional scepticism is related to auditors’ individual characteristics, trait scepticism. Methodology: This study is based on a quantitative method in the form of a questionnaire sent to all Swedish authorized auditors. The response rate was 16.8 per cent. The responses were analyzed by Spearman correlation matrix, principal component analysis, multiple linear regression analysis, and hierarchical moderated multiple regression analysis. Moreover, this thesis is based on a positivistic perspective to get a general picture of professional scepticism. A deductive approach, going from theory to empirics, has been implemented. Findings: The results showed a positive relationship between judgment represented by professional scepticism and structure represented by CAATs, where auditors’ individual characteristics, trait scepticism, have a positive moderating effect on the relationship. Theoretical perspectives: We apply the profession theory, comfort theory and structure and judgment at Swedish authorized auditors with diverse experience.

Abstract:

This study examines how auditors’ attitude towards marketing and their view on the importance of marketing affect how they balance their time spent on marketing and auditing activities. The purpose is to understand how the changing business environment for auditors affects the relationship between the auditing profession and marketing. The study is based on a survey of 712 auditors in Sweden. The findings suggest that auditors with positive attitude towards marketing spend significantly more time on marketing activities compared to those with less positive attitude. Furthermore, auditors who view marketing activities as important, spend significantly more time on marketing activities. The number of years as approved or authorized auditor, age of the auditor, and bureau affiliation was controlled for. The result indicates that the theoretical distance between the auditing profession and marketing does not exist in practice to the same degree as it used to.

Lyubimov, Alexey. "Regulation and the Auditing Profession." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2013. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5808.

Full text
Abstract:
The dissertation consists of three studies examining three different regulatory issues that affect the auditing profession. The first study has two main foci. First, the study investigates the impact of Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) on the Big 4 fee premium. Second, the study investigates the relationship between the size of an audit client and annual fee change. The results show that in the post-SOX environment, clients of non-Big 4 firms have experienced greater increases in audit fees than the clients of the Big 4 firms, resulting in a diminishing Big 4 premium. This is consistent with the notion that non-Big 4 clients had to make significant adjustments to meet post-SOX quality requirements by increasing their effort (and consequently audit fees). The results also show audit firms' large clients experience the largest percentage increase in audit fees. This is consistent with the theoretical view of consumer surplus, where the large clients, with more resources, have greater levels of consumer surplus, which is being captured by the audit firms. The study contributes to our understanding of the impact of SOX on audit fee premium and the economics of audit market competition in different client segments. The second study is focused on three main areas: 1) the relationship between audit fees and audit market concentration on a country level; 2) the effect of a country's litigation regime on the relationship between audit fees and market concentration and 3) the inter-relations between competition, fees, and quality in the market for audit services. The study is motivated by the current debate in the United States and the European Union about the possible problems associated with the current oligopolistic structure of the audit market. The contribution of this study lies in the fact that it provides a multi-national empirical investigation of the audit competition-fee relationship, and examination of how country-level fees affect the competition-quality relationship, while controlling for country level factors. Results show a negative relationship between country-level market concentration and audit fees but only in highly litigious countries, suggesting that the firms are able to obtain economies of scale in more concentrated markets and are willing to pass savings down to their clients. However this relationship only holds for the clients of the Big N firms. Analysis of audit quality suggests that audit quality is higher in more concentrated markets but mediation analysis did not show that the fees mediate the relationship between audit quality and market concentration. The third study addresses current regulatory debate about the responsibility of the principal auditor in the group audit environment. Current United States standards allow the principal auditor to disavow responsibility for parts of the audit which were performed by a third party auditor by referencing them in the auditor's opinion and then indicating the part of the audit which was performed by them. This disclaimer of responsibility is prohibited under the international auditing standards, which require the principal auditor to be responsible for the entire group audit. Specifically, this study examines 1) audit quality implications related to such opinions, and 2) the relationship between having a shared opinion and audit fees. The results show that the audit quality is significantly lower for the firms whose audit opinion referenced a third party auditor. The results also provide some evidence that audit fees are lower in shared responsibility situations.

Garry, Anthony Joseph. "Affect and the role of client sophistication on satisfaction judgments within business-to-business professional services." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2008. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11380/.

Full text
Abstract:
Evidence which demonstrates a link between the affective dimension and satisfaction in a tangible product based context is well documented. However, when placed in a credence service context the role of Affect becomes more complex insofar as research suggests that consumers will partly use their affective reaction to the service provider when evaluating overall satisfaction. However, previous research in this field has assumed consumer homogeneity when there is increasing evidence of consumer heterogeneity. Consequently, this research attempts to address this deficiency by exploring the role of Affect evoked among consumers of differing sophistication within the business-to-business credence service context of corporate legal services. To this end, a three-stage methodology is adopted incorporating explorative interviews, experimentally generated scenarios and a survey comprising of 252 users of corporate legal services within the UK. The results suggest that the consumer's ability to form expectation and performance assessments about the core service may have a moderating influence on the way service expectations are set and how service relationships are evaluated relative to the technical, functional and affective components of the service. This in turn questions the validity of the SEC (search, experience, credence) frame of reference focusing on service attributes whilst disregarding the level of consumer sophistication. The implications of this are that service organisations should devote effort to devising appropriate service delivery processes that are pertinent to the individual consumer. This has implications for the recruitment, training and empowerment of employees within such services which have traditionally focused on technical qualifications and experiential knowledge as the key drivers of HRM strategies. Thus, this research contributes towards an understanding of the moderating influence of consumer sophistication on the role of Affect evoked on satisfaction judgments within business-to-business professional services markets.

Abstract:
Over the years there have been several corporate scandals, which have been linked to shortcomings in the auditing. In order to avoid similar scandals in the future, increased requirements for law and standards have been introduced. With the help of regular quality controls, the audit should maintain high quality and shortcomings should be discovered earlier. Previous research shows that it is often in the audit documentation that deficiencies occur. The purpose of this paper is to identify factors that cause shortcomings in the audit documentation. In order to fulfil the purpose of the paper, interviews have been conducted with ten auditors from various audit firms in Skåne. The theoretical framework is based on a model that shows my understanding of how different factors affect the audit documentation. The conclusion of the study shows that the auditor's perceptions of the regulation, the auditor’s professional role and the audit firm structure are factors that may cause shortcomings in the audit documentation, which can often be related to the lack of time in the process of auditing. The moment in the audit process regarding assessments of essential information may cause shortcomings in the audit documentation. This is because auditors can interpret and assess differently, which reflects what information each auditor considers to be essential information to include in the audit documentation. This in turn can lead to the fact that all auditors do not include what law and standard require. As a proposal for future research, a study should be made in order to determine how many assignments are optimal for an auditor to audit per year, with regards to the time aspect in relation to the documentation requirements.

Suzanne, Pamela A. "Experienced newcomers : business professionals' identity development following a career change." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2012. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/55295/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis studies the process of how experienced business professionals adjust to a new role. These experienced newcomers were Argentinean MBA graduates who made a career transition and were going through the first months at the new job. Through a grounded theory and constructivist approach, participants reflected on what was relevant to them during this period, in interviews and personal diaries. Developing the professional identity emerged as a strong theme, including how they developed relationships, how they managed conflict with colleagues and supervisors, how they changed their profiles to adjust, how they managed identity threats, how they experimented with possible selves, and how they constructed their dynamic professional identities. This doctoral project contributes to the understanding of how experienced newcomers socialise to a new role with a career perspective, considering both past experience and future aspirations. Data collection undertaken during four months for each participant enabled an understanding of process, especially in terms of how individuals develop relationships at work and ideas for possible selves, contributing to theoretical gaps in existing literature. In addition, it contributes to research on business professionals, and MBA graduates in particular, which is quite scarce in Argentina.

Abstract:
This study explored the professional contributions of Ruth I. Anderson, retired professor of Business Administration, The University of North Texas, Denton, Texas. The data for this study were gained through questionnaire responses, a telephone interview, and personal interviews with faculty, staff, students, and business people who have worked closely with Anderson and an interview with Anderson herself. During a literature review, many of the journal articles written by Anderson were read in order to obtain insight into the thoughts and ideas Anderson had toward business education. The dissertation, divided into six chapters, begins with an introduction to the study. Chapter 1 includes the statement of the problem, purposes of the study, research questions, significance of the study, rationale for the study, and design of the study. Chapter 2 contains a biographical sketch of Ruth Anderson and offers a chronology of her career in business education. Anderson's educational philosophy is the focus of Chapter 3. Chapter 4 addresses her major accomplishments and contributions to business education. Anderson's impact on business education is the topic of Chapter 5. A summary is provided in Chapter 6. This study recognized Ruth Anderson as a significant person in the field of business education. Anderson, who was employed in the field for more than forty years, is the author, or co-author, of six books and the contributor of more than eighty articles published in professional journals. Major educational contributions of Ruth Anderson included publications, research, and involvement in professional organizations at the local, state, and national levels. Anderson made an impact on the field of business education through being a role model for former students, being a well-respected colleague, and being well known in the business education profession. Perhaps her greatest gift to the profession was her superior classroom teaching ability. Ruth Anderson's greatest contribution continues today through the work of her former students who have gone on to be business education teachers and professional educators.

Krolikowska-Adamczyk, Ewa. "Social bonds in clients' business relationships with professional service providers." Thesis, University of Greenwich, 2013. http://gala.gre.ac.uk/11945/.

Full text
Abstract:
The emergence of Relationship Marketing around 40 years ago has led to an improvement in our understanding and management of business relationships through the study of relationship constructs such as loyalty. Researchers have also found a number of different bonds in business relationships. One of these is social bonds which develop between individuals and can impact positively on long-term client relationships at an organisational level. However social bonds have suffered from a lack of clarity in definition, identification and measurement. Scale development has been limited as most researchers view the social bond as a unidimensional construct and fail to provide solid theoretical support for their scale. There is a need to define the concept and build a multidimensional scale of social bonds using a comprehensive theoretical framework. Researchers such as Barnes (1994) suggest that marketers can learn from social psychologists who have studied relationships extensively. Indeed social-psychology theories such as social exchange theory have been widely used in relationship marketing studies. Attachment theory is relatively new to business relationships, having emerged from the study of child-parent relationships but has been applied more recently to explain customer attachment. Another promising theory is Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love (1986) which can be used to identify potential bonds based on liking. This study uses attachment and liking theories as the theoretical framework for developing a social bond scale in the context of clients’ business relationships with professional service providers. These relationships have been substantially under-researched and provide a relevant context for the research due to the benefits of strong interpersonal bonds in a pure service environment like professional services. A multi-method research design was adopted consisting of qualitative in-depth interviews with professional service providers and a questionnaire survey of senior decision makers in the hotel industry. The study’s contributions include a greater understanding of social bonds, attachment and liking in business relationships. The research found two distinct social bonds thereby confirming that the construct is multidimensional. A number of demographic and contextual variables were found to have an impact on social bond strength. These findings have led to guidelines on managing client relationships for professional service providers and organisations.

Lowe, Michelle. "Teaching Assistants : the development of a profession?" Thesis, Staffordshire University, 2010. http://eprints.staffs.ac.uk/2012/.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2003 a national agreement between government, employers and workforce unions introduced significant changes to the school workforce. A key outcome was a significant increase in the number of Teaching Assistants (TAs), who could take on some aspects of the work of teachers. However, there is very little empirical data about TAs, most of what is available is based upon limited datasets. Most previous analyses presume that they are an homogenous group, thus ignoring the possibility that there may be important differences in the types of TA and their deployment. The research reported in this thesis documents the history of TAs and explores their current role. It is argued that a typology of TA roles can be derived, which can help their future deployment in schools and form the basis for the development of a career pathway specific to TAs. The national agreement was to lead to a new ‗professionalism‘ (DfES 2003) and this research provides new empirical analysis which specifically explores the extent to which TAs have become ‗professional‘ in the light of these reforms. In pursuing this objective the concept of professionalism in relation to TAs is critically appraised by examining the views of TAs and the teachers and CPD leaders they work with. It is argued that these perspectives on professionalism and professional status impact upon how schools deploy TAs. It is also argued that these perspectives lead to specific patterns of remuneration and working conditions which are different from those anticipated by orthodox labour market theory. A proposition supported by analyses of TAs‘ pay and job satisfaction. This thesis identifies that there has been an uncoupling of the factors normally associated with pay and satisfaction at work, leading to a mutually reinforcing relationship between pay and satisfaction which generates inertia and has the effect of negatively disadvantaging TAs in employment.

Bergqvist, Tova, and Filippa Gabrielii. "Digitaliseringens påverkan på yrkesidentitet : en kvalitativ studie om redovisningsekonomer." Thesis, Högskolan i Borås, Akademin för textil, teknik och ekonomi, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hb:diva-21613.

Full text
Abstract:
Digitalization is seen as one of society’s strongest ongoing changes and its consequences affect industries and professions to a large extent. The accounting industry has been and is still facing major changes as a result of technological development and as an accountant it is important to adapt to be able to survive on the market. The accountants work has previously consisted of much administrative and monotonous tasks, which are such tasks that technology can and has taken over. Therefore the accountants have begun to perform other tasks, for example advisory and analytics. These new tasks requires new competences for all accountants. The purpose of this study is to investigate how and to what extent accountants professional identity is affected by digitalization. We have chosen a qualitative method for the study and conducted nine semi-structured interviews with accountants from different companies. The study’s conclusion is that digitalization affects the accountants professional identity to a large extent and that it may change completely in the future. There have been many studies on how digitalization affects working method and tasks. However, there are few studies that describe what this actually means for professions and professional identity. This paper is written in Swedish.

Robinett, Susan Kirby. "Perceived Professional Development Needs of Business Education Teachers in West Virginia." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/37912.

Full text
Abstract:
This study identified the perceived professional development needs of secondary business educators in West Virginia related to professional and business education content competency areas. A population of 408 secondary business educators was randomly assigned to two groups to evaluate their perceived professional development needs. A total of 104 (51.40% of 202) respondents reported their perceived need for professional development for professional competencies based on Policy 5310: Performance Evaluation of School Personnel of the West Virginia Department of Education. Also, a total of 89 (43.0% of 206) respondents indicated their perceived need for professional development for business education content competencies based on the NBEA's National Standards for Business Education. Data analyzed using frequency analyses revealed that the highest rated perceived professional development needs related to professional competencies were found in the areas of Programs of Study, Classroom Climate, and Instructional Management Systems. It was further determined that the highest rated perceived professional development needs related to business education content competencies were found in the areas of Information Systems, Career Development, and International Business. The one-way ANOVA analyses did not find differences among teachers' perceived professional development needs based on years of teaching experience or educational level for professional competencies or for business education content with the exception of the competency areas of Accounting and Business Law. In both of these areas, the post-hoc statistical analysis revealed differences among the educational levels of teachers, with respondents who had an Ed.S degree reporting a higher level of need than those with bachelor's or master's degrees. Overall, teachers perceived a higher need for professional development activities in the business education content areas than in the professional competencies. Findings of the study indicate that professional development activities should be relevant to teachers' needs. This study found specifically that business education teachers were most interested in technology-driven subject matter, technology integration into classroom learning, and general economic awareness and career awareness of international and technological occupations. In addition, all areas of methodology, professional competencies and content area competencies, should integrated into professional development activities to prepare teachers to effectively disseminate the content to ensure student learning.

Greco, Lindsey Michelle. "Professional identification and career goals: goal setting in the role transition process." Diss., University of Iowa, 2016. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/2085.

Full text
Abstract:
The question of the development and content of personal career goals has received little attention and relatively little is known about the factors influencing career goals and when and how career goal setting occurs. Drawing from Ashforth’s (2001) model of role transitions, I propose that professional identification is an important precursor to the development of career goals. The primary research objectives of this dissertation are to explore how identity motives drawn from experiences in graduate school relate to professional identification and how professional identification relates to both short- and long-term career goals for graduate students. I investigated my conceptual model and research hypotheses using a mixed-methods design. The stage 1 qualitative analysis was used to (1) identify measures corresponding to Ashforth’s (2001) four psychological motives (i.e., identity, control, meaning, and belonging) as antecedents of identification and (2) representative measures of career goals for graduate students. Forty-eight graduate students responded to open-ended questions about graduate school experiences, challenges, and career goals. Content analysis revealed measureable constructs for graduate students that align with Ashforth’s control and belonging motives; graduate students elicited support from advisors (i.e., career and psychosocial mentoring), peers (i.e., peer support), and colleagues (i.e., networking) to provide a framework for identification with their new professional roles. In terms of outcome goal variables, graduate students’ goals reflected two major content themes: extrinsic needs and status attainment. The responses from the Stage 1 qualitative survey along with social identity theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1979) and the goal setting literature served as the basis for the development of the Stage 2 quantitative survey assessing both short-term and long-term career goals. Based on a sample of 312 (short-term career goal model) and 243 (long-term career goal model) graduate students from 28 different universities in fields across both hard and social sciences, results show that one individual characteristic (need for identification) and actions of faculty advisors (psychosocial mentoring) are positively related to professional identification. Professional identification was related to goals in two main ways. First, higher professional identification positively related to short-term career goals which were high quality – that is, the goals were specific, difficult, and graduate students were committed to achieving them. Second, professional identification was positively related to both short-and long-term extrinsic goals, suggesting that graduate students who have internalized the goals and objectives of the profession see that a way to solidify their professional standing is to pursue a position that presents opportunities for high wages and external rewards. Overall, the research findings have implications for theory related to identification motives and identification in role transition processes. The study also contributes to the literature on careers and goal setting, especially as it relates to professional workers. From a practical perspective, faculty advisors should emphasize positive psychosocial mentoring experiences such as counseling and friendship to create a sense of professional identity for students, and professional associations and faculty should consider that identification with a profession is primarily related to career goals associated with high financial success.

Wiedegreen, Sandra Jane. "Professional development: determining member needs for the Virginia Business Education Association." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/41501.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the professional development needs of business educators in Virginia. An instrument was developed to assess priorities for leaders in business education in Virginia and the Virginia Business Education Association. The priorities were analyzed according to geographic region represented, and demographic factors of the respondents were compared to the priority rankings. Business educators attending regional conferences throughout Virginia during October, 1990 participated in this study. Two hundred and fifty usable instruments were received. A descriptive statistical analysis was used to determine the rank order, mean and standard deviation of the priorities; the same analysis by break-variable was used to determine the mean rankings for each geographic region. Correlations were run to determine relationships between the demographic factors and the priority rankings. Conclusions resulting from data analyses performed and reported in this study are as follows: (1) business educators are concerned with keeping business education relevant to workforce needs, and they are aware of the importance of integrating business education into the academic curriculum; (2) business educators desire their professional organization to act as their advocate at the local and state levels, as well as provide them with regional professional development opportunities; (3) business educators from all geographic regions agreed on their priority rankings for business education leaders and the VBEA; and (4) business educators with advanced degrees and/or more years experience do not differ significantly in their priority rankings from those educators without advanced degrees and fewer years of service.
