Abstract:

The scientific and practical manual, which is a methodological toolkit, is intended for professionals - representatives of the scientific, pedagogical and library community — seeking to learn for themselves and teach others to live and work in a digital educational environment; actively form their professional and supra—professional (digital) competencies, including learning how to systematize and apply in practice the growing the volume of information and, accordingly, effectively manage information flows, both personal and organizations (educational institutions, libraries) as a whole. The definition of the concept of "information flow management" and its main characteristics are given. The functions of specialists in the effective management of information flows are disclosed. Digital tools are presented, the use of which, if librarians and teachers have certain professional and supra-professional competencies, will contribute to the effective implementation of these functions. Rich illustrative material (step-by-step instructions), links (in the form of QR codes) to ready-made examples of the implementation of the proposed digital tools, lists of references on topics can make this scientific and practical manual a desktop book for any representative of the scientific, pedagogical, library community who aims to learn how to manage information flows.

Abstract:

This book examines the ways in which the idea of blackness has worked as a complex of representational strategies in the genre of opera. Offering new readings of both canonical and lesser-known operas by black and nonblack composers alike, it explores what representations of blackness in opera had in their original contexts, and what kind of performative and cultural significance they have retained. It shows that getting a black opera singer onstage involves successfully negotiating many professional and cultural barriers, but achieving that aim can lead to new and equally limiting obstacles. This is evident in the case of minstrelsy, which entail greater challenges for black performers compared to their white counterparts. Through an analysis of the “representation of blackness in opera,” the book brings to the fore questions about race and identity that are intertwined with questions of musical presentation. Most of the essays it contains are grounded in the phenomenon of black Other—the treatment of darker-skinned people as exotic or Other.

Abstract:

In the twentieth century, jazz professionals became race representatives who also played an important part in shaping the religious landscape of twentieth-century African American Protestantism. They wielded the power to both define their religious communities and craft novel religious voices and performances. These music celebrities released religious recordings and put on religious concerts, and they became integral to the artistry of African American religious expression. This book argues that with the emergence of new representatives in jazz, religious authority for African Americans found a place and spokespeople in popular culture beyond traditional Afro-Protestant institutions and religious life. It examines jazz musicians’ expressions of belief, practice, and unconventional positions of religious authority. It demonstrates that these jazz professionals enacted theological beliefs and religious practices that echoed, contested with, and diverged from the predominant African American religious culture. The lives and work of Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Mary Lou Williams anchor this book’s narrative of racial and religious representations as well as of religious beliefs and practices in the middle decades of the twentieth century. Through these African American jazz women and men, this book illuminates the significant Afro-Protestant cultural presence that informed, surrounded, and opposed their professional and personal lives while also contributing significantly to their artistry. This book’s focus on jazz musicians offers a novel rethinking of African American religious history by bringing the significant artistic dimensions of Afro-Protestant religion into focus as it impacted black popular culture in the twentieth century.

Abstract:

The sports agent performs a critical function as an intermediary between management and athletes by handling contract negotiations, endorsements, financial planning, and other associated activities. This chapter provides a history of athlete representation beginning in the 1920s with the efforts of Christy Walsh and Charles C. Pyle through the increased role of players associations during the final third of last century. In the 1980s, professional associations and state legislatures launched efforts to regulate agent behavior as a reaction to evidence of abuse. In the 2000s, these problems prompted the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws to introduce the Uniform Athlete Agents Act, a legislative initiative ultimately adopted by over 80% of states, and the U.S. Congress passed the Sports Agent Responsibility Trust Act. Both initiatives addressed the tension between the NCAA’s amateurism standards and efforts by agents to attract clients before the completion of their eligibility.

Abstract:

Professional competence is a necessary but insufficient representation of how an individual health-care professional should properly behave in relation to a patient. Medical ethics addresses the further question of the basis on which actions taken by professionals in the context of that relationship are morally right. Children are distinct from adults in ethically relevant ways. They lack autonomy, both in practice and in principle, and their interests are easily ignored or annexed to others. In practice, ethical questions in children are currently addressed using the ‘four-principles’ or by appealing to rights-based arguments. Behind both are ethical theories (particularly deontology, utilitarian consequentialism, and virtue ethics) that are important, but problematic, in children. This chapter reviews existing ways of looking at ethics in end-of-life care for children, considering three specific contemporary debates in medical ethics in children’s palliative care: the principle of double effect, euthanasia, and withholding or withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment.

The history of sport can be considered an arena in which struggles over ways of doing things have worked themselves out, sometimes to the advantage of one class but occasionally to the benefit—or detriment—of more than one class. Sport has its antitheses—amateur versus professional, competitive versus noncompetitive, the individual versus the team—each of which contains class dimensions. In this chapter, players, fans, owners, governing bodies, and the media are treated as representatives, projections, or embodiments of classes and class fractions, struggling amongst themselves and occasionally against each other. The chapter emphasizes the formative influence of Great Britain and its class structure from the Industrial Revolution onward on the emergence of specific sports, the codification of rules, leagues, and fan bases. It analyzes the complex and sometimes contradictory nature of players as workers, their representation, and the particular dynamics between class and fan affinities.
