Hobart, Leigh. "The current context of Queensland primary teacher engagement with professional learning through professional associations." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2009. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/46122/1/Leigh_Hobart_Thesis.pdf.

Abstract:
Engaging Queensland primary teachers in professional associations can be a challenge, particularly for subject-specific associations. Professional associations are recognised providers of professional learning. By not being involved in professional associations primary teachers are missing potential quality professional learning opportunities that can impact the results of their students. The purpose of the research is twofold: Firstly, to provide a thorough understanding of the current context in order to assist professional associations who wish to change from their current level of primary teacher engagement; and secondly, to contribute to the literature in the area of professional learning for primary teachers within professional associations. Using a three part research design, interviews of primary teachers and focus groups of professional association participants and executives were conducted and themed to examine the current context of engagement. Force field analysis was used to provide the framework to identify the driving and restraining forces for primary teacher engagement in professional learning through professional associations. Communities of practice and professional learning communities were specifically examined as potential models for professional associations to consider. The outcome is a diagrammatic framework outlining the current context of primary teacher engagement, specifically the driving and restraining forces of primary teacher engagement with professional associations. This research also identifies considerations for professional associations wishing to change their level of primary teacher engagement. The results of this research show that there are key themes that provide maximum impact if wishing to increase engagement of primary teachers in professional associations. However the implications of this lies with professional associations and their alignment between intent and practice dedicated to this change.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.
This thesis describes and analyzes the Navy's service short courses available to medical professionals. The description covers course content (subjects being taught), describes contact hours (time a class is taught), and evaluates the depth and breadth of content. The information from each course is compared to the needs of a medical treatment facility (MTF) manager, as determined by the Naval Postgraduate School 'Needs Assessment'. This examination shows that many Navy medical professional service short courses cover parts of the knowledge and skills needed to manage a medical treatment facility. The courses examined focus mainly on leadership and management skills. In order to more accurately describe and analyze these courses, obtaining more detailed information, observing the courses being taught, and interviewing course instructors is recommended.

Abstract:
Dissertation for obtaining the academic degree of a Doctor in Pedagogical Sciences іn specialty 13.00.06 – theory and methods of educational administration. – SHEI «Educational Management University» NAPS Ukraine. – Kyiv, 2011. The theoretical and methodological foundations for professional development of executive leaders in form of methodology which include regularities, principles, content, pedagogical technology, evaluation and conditions of leaders’ education effectiveness are defined in the dissertation. The leadership is presented as the highest – compared to administration and management – evolutional and qualitative level of governance, and its actualization in modern social transformations is verified. Dependency between governance levels (administration, management, leadership) and competencies levels (knowledge, skills, behavior competencies) is proved. The specificities and factors that provide for the effectiveness of leadership education programs are specified on basis of analysis of leading foreign and domestic experience in executive leaders’ professional development for business, public and education administration. The specific character of pedagogical technology and evaluation of the aforementioned education is clarified. The grounded methodology of executive leaders’ professional development was realized in the domestic practice of professional education for heads of educational institutions. Practical recommendations and perspective directions for further academic research are developed

Woodard, William A. "Maintaining technical currency among computer professionals: a multiple-case investigation of the role of formal and informal learning." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/53608.

Full text
Abstract:
Virtually all government and industry information and control systems rely upon computer professionals for systems development and maintenance. With the national workforce growing at only one percent annually and enrollments in computer and information sciences college programs declining, the need exists to obtain a continued contribution of good work from our existing workforce. A multiple-phase, multiple-case study research project was performed to develop an understanding of how technical currency is maintained, not as a discrete phenomenon, but within the setting of the work environment, considering project experiences, organizational relationships, professional preparation and continuing professional education, and individual motivation. Previous research indicated that project experiences contributed to, or provided a vehicle for, maintaining technical currency. Maintaining technical currency was found to require a continuous process involving organizational relationships, the individual's perceived value in the organization, constant assessments and evaluations of current and desired project involvement or position attainment, repeated and varied learning episodes, and actual project experiences. Individuals were motivated to take specific actions, such as participating in training courses, when such action was expected to yield a benefit. Project experiences alone were not sufficient to maintain technical currency, although they were an essential element. While formal education in preparation for a career was critical, formal courses did not contribute as significantly as other forms of continuing professional education to maintaining technical currency. A Technical Currency Model was generated that explains how individuals expend energy in one or more of five focus areas depending on their motivation at the time: (a) technical qualification for a project or position; (b) political qualification for a project or position; (c) performing on a project or in a position; (d) determining that change is appropriate; and (e) seeking the next project or position.

Abstract:
This study focuses on the career paths and career projections of teacher professionals who are at a stage in their professional roles where they have not embarked upon senior leadership positions in the schools in which they work. Often research has focused retrospectively on the career paths of those already in leadership posts rather than those who are expected to be aspiring to leadership, have discounted this option or are yet to make a decision. Increasing numbers of re-advertisements for headship posts indicates a lack of willing or suitable candidates applying. Changes to school staffing structures and the role of headteachers in recent years have resulted in greater responsibilities including financial matters and the maintenance of premises. Government policies in favour of schools becoming academies has removed local authority support and placed increased pressure on individual school leaders. These factors coupled with the external inspection system and the media focus on so called failing schools has led to the role of head becoming unattractive to many and this study aims to collect the views of a sample of teachers regarding this role. Six schools of similar type were selected from within one local authority and a survey was utilised in order to collect data. This was initially in the form of a questionnaire completed by seventy nine teachers from which twelve participants took part in two interviews each. Teachers were subsequently organised into one of four career categories; 'careerist', 'serendipity', 'active choice' and 'stuck'. Analysis of the data indicates that many teacher professionals do not plan to become senior leaders or heads. This is in agreement with many serving heads who in existing research claim not to have planned their routes to headship. However, the majority of the sample in this study have already ruled out the role of head, finding the pressures and perceived stress of the role unappealing and not wishing to lose their identity as classroom teachers. The underrepresentation of women in headteacher posts does not look likely to be addressed in the near future as females in the study are more likely to feel unable to pursue leadership roles often due to family commitments. A larger proportion of females have made the choice not to pursue leadership roles than males, even when those females did not necessarily have the pressures of home responsibilities. For many females future decisions regarding starting families and seeking promotions produced dilemmas that men did not appear to have to confront. These factors look likely to lead to continued headteacher shortages in the short term with no real incentives to encourage females to pursue such posts now or in the future.

Hansen, Andrea L. "No-Suicide Contracts with Suicidal Youth: Utah Mental Health Professionals' Perceptions and Current Practice." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2012. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3464.

Full text
Abstract:
Suicide is the third leading cause of death among youth and young adults ages 10--24. In 2001 the U.S. Surgeon General laid out a national strategic plan to more effectively address suicide prevention (United States Public Health Service, 2001). In 2008, Gene Cash, then president of The National Association of School Psychologists, made a "call to action" to prevent suicide. Although suicide prevention has been repeatedly identified as a priority in mental health care, the vast majority of interventions with suicidal youth are not evidence based due to a lack of research utilizing controlled studies (Daniel & Goldston, 2009). Unfortunately this leaves mental health professionals (MHPs) to routinely implement interventions that are not research based and not proven effective in deterring suicidal thoughts and actions. No-suicide contracts (NSCs), commonly used in clinical and medical settings, solicit a commitment from a suicidal individual, a promise not to complete suicide. The prevalence of school-based MHPs' use of NSCs with suicidal youth (SY) is unknown. Additionally, minimal feedback is available regarding MHPs' perceptions of and current practice regarding implementation of NSCs. Likewise, school policy directing MHPs' intervention when working with SY is neither well described nor understood. A brief survey was created to access these perceptions and practices. Of 326 MHPs attending a Utah Youth Suicide Prevention Conference, 243 completed a survey (74.5% participation rate). Half of participants intervening with SY reported using NSCs. Only 27 of the 243 participants indicated that their school's policy encouraged or required a NSC. Only 8 participants reported knowledge of a formal written school policy that specifically guided their intervention with SY. Reasoning underlying decisions to use or not to use NSCs were explored. Common explanations included attending to individual student needs, following perceived guidelines, building trust with SY and adapting contracts to fit student needs, and opening discussion about suicide. Several participants expressed a need for additional training with no-suicide contracting. A few participants called for either renaming NSCs or implementing a similar, but more positive, "commitment to treatment" strategy. Participants did not mention a need for additional research to explore the efficacy of NSCs. In fact, research was not mentioned. This reflects the gap between research and practice and the dependency on personal experience and going along with the status quo versus depending on research findings to dictate improvement and change in practice.

Willig, Amanda Lynn. "Evaluation of Current Decision Rules and Healthcare Professional Practices for Detecting Osteoporosis Risk in the Young Adult Population." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/9990.

Full text
Abstract:
Osteoporosis is caused by a multitude of factors. An individual’s risk for experiencing a bone fracture as a senior citizen increases without early intervention. Healthcare professionals do not have access to validated survey tools to identify young adults in need of osteoporosis prevention education, although survey tools to identify postmenopausal women at high risk for low bone mass are available. The purposes of this study were to evaluate three of these survey tools for use in a younger population, and to determine if young adults with osteoporosis risk factors received bone health education from a health professional. Forty-two men and 41 women completed surveys and health questionnaires; responses were compared to bone mineral density (BMD) and content (BMC) measurements. Healthcare professionals discussed bone health with only 13% of participants. Chi-square analysis revealed that health professionals were not more likely to discuss osteoporosis with subjects based on age or gender. Participants with T-scores ≤ -1.0 were not more likely to receive bone health education. Area under the receiving operating characteristic (AUROC) curves analysis revealed that no survey tools were able to identify moderate-risk participants at T-scores ≤ -1.0, and AUROC curves for all surveys did not exceed 0.525 at this level. Two surveys detected participants at high risk for bone disease with identical AUROC curves of 0.821 at a T-score ≤ -2.0, and 0.813 at a T-score ≤ -2.5. The AUROC curves indicate that current tools designed for older women do not detect young adults with moderately low T-scores.

Sorensen, Katie. "Is Social Studies Being Taught?: A Study of One District." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2006. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/1000.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the status of social studies in elementary classrooms in a local school district. Status was determined by assessing the amount of instructional time that was devoted to social studies, its perceived importance in the curriculum, and challenges associated with teaching social studies. Three research questions were identified in order to examine the status of social studies in Apple School District (pseudonym): (1) To what degree is social studies being taught in the elementary grades one through five? (2) How important is social studies compared to other areas of the curriculum? (3) What do elementary teachers identify to be challenges associated with teaching social studies? Data for this study were gathered through a single distribution of a survey. Teachers of grades one through five from 19 elementary schools participated in this study. Surveys were collected from 351 teachers. Results of this study indicated that social studies was being taught in 98% of the classrooms of teachers surveyed. A post hoc analysis of variance revealed that fifth-grade teachers reported teaching social studies significantly more days per week than first, second, and third-grade teachers. Results also revealed that fourth-grade teachers taught significantly more days per week than second-grade teachers. Participants reported their perception that social studies was less important than literacy, math, and science. Participants also identified challenges to teaching social studies. The three most often mentioned challenges were time constraints, lack of resources and core curriculum issues.

Abstract:
In this interactive presentation attendees will learn about processes used to mobilize research into practical applications. Attendees will learn about the five processes used by the Military REACH team to accomplish this goal, which extends beyond the realms of military research (e.g., social science research). The Military REACH team will discuss how research is identified, evaluated, translated, archived, and distributed to families, helping professionals, and policy makers through various avenues. The goal of this presentation is to demonstrate a systematic approach for making research visible and available to those outside of higher education. Foundational to the process utilized is an emphasis on connecting research to intended audiences (families, helping professionals, and policy makers) in a manner that is inviting, easily understood, and meaningful for their everyday context. This emphasis is demonstrated in our processes through the importance placed on identifying and highlighting implications of the research for specific target audiences.

Full text
Abstract:
The extent and nature of the impact of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in the feet from the point of view of those with the disease is unknown. Most epidemiological studies of foot involvement in RA have been based upon radiological scoring or the findings of clinicians' examination of feet in clinically based populations. This thesis aimed to explore foot involvement in RA from the perspective of people with the disease integrated with the perceptions of rheumatologists and podiatrists. Three questionnaires were developed de novo through an iterative process of integrating information gained from focus groups, illness narratives and literature reviews. Following piloting, questionnaires sent to participants enquired about symptoms in the feet, the anatomical distribution of those symptoms, and their impact on quality of life from the perspectives of 1040 people with RA, 78 podiatrists and 414 rheumatologists throughout the UK. Additionally, the availability of podiatric services and the usefulness of interventions for foot symptoms and foot function were triangulated from participants. Quantitative data were analysed using SPSS and a process of thematic analysis was used to interpret qualitative data. Results from participants indicated that symptoms due to RA were prevalent in all parts of the foot and ankle but the metatarsophalangeal and ankle joints were most commonly and severely affected. Most people with RA (79%) reported suffering recurrent, moderate or severe foot pain every day. Other symptoms (stiffness, numbness and swelling) were also common. Overall, these findings were greater than those that have been reported previously. Foot complaints were noted to have a profound effect on quality of life, with loss of mobility due to symptoms in the feet, and difficulties finding comfortable footwear, leading to loss of independence, anger, frustration and depression; findings that have not been previously reported in detail. A gap between the need for specialist foot care and receiving such care was highlighted, with a total 82% of respondents having discussed their foot symptoms with their rheumatologist. Amongst these patients 64% had been referred to a podiatrist. Clinicians' assessment practices varied widely both within and between professions. Patients reported that on average rheumatologists examined their hands every 6.2 months, whereas their feet were only examined every 16.5 months; this led some patients to feel that rheumatologists were disinterested in their foot complaints. Additionally, the type of assessment undertaken by clinicians did not fully take account of the issues people with RA were reporting. Issues that were key to patients were quality of life and the ability to participate in valued life activities. Difficulties with obtaining adequate foot health care were noted by those with the disease and clinicians alike. Symptoms in the feet in RA are common, severe and tend to be under-reported by clinicians. Involvement of the metatarsophalangeal joints and ankles is especially troublesome. Motion in these joints is vital for normal propulsive gait. Severe involvement causes reduced mobility and impedes independence with considerable consequences for social integration. Outcome measures that exclude the feet discourage foot examination and thus do not fully account for domains of importance to those with RA. Rheumatologists and podiatrists need to work more closely in order for a more patient-centred service to be developed, where a biopsychosocial approach to foot care would more fully address the needs of people with RA.

Farley, Janice Landmesser. "The current attitudes of principals and teachers regarding mainstreaming in Virginia middle-level schools." W&M ScholarWorks, 1991. https://scholarworks.wm.edu/etd/1539618746.

Abstract:
This study investigated the relationship between the attitudes of principals and teachers toward mainstreaming and the level of comfort participants felt toward special education and mainstreaming. Sixty-five large and small middle schools from the state of Virginia were randomly selected to participate in this study. Participants completed demographic/information sheets, the Attitude Towards Mainstreaming Scale (ATMS), and the Comfortability Scale for Special Education (CSSE). Data were analyzed using statistical methods.;The following research questions were explored (1) do the current attitudes of school personnel differ from previous findings, (2) does a middle level principal's attitude relate to a middle level teacher's attitude, (3) does the level of comfort of a middle level principal relate to a middle level teacher's level of comfort, (4) do the indirect factors such as number of years of experience, teacher level of education, number of special education courses and preservice training influence a teacher's or principal's attitude, and (5) does attitude and comfort relate to school division size and school personnel?;It was concluded the attitudes of middle school personnel are similar to the attitudes of personnel who work in other grade levels. Furthermore, principals had more favorable attitudes towards mainstreaming than teachers. Principals can influence the attitudes of teachers toward mainstreaming, however, principals' level of comfort do not influence teachers' level of comfort. Specific factors were found to be indirectly related to attitude. The significant factors included prior experience working with persons with disabilities, educational background, and coursework in special education were significant. The size of a school division was related to the level of comfort of school personnel when working in team situations.;Further study is needed to evaluate the relationship between level of comfort and attitude. A disparity in an individual's attitude and level of comfort exists between large and small school divisions. Additional studies should examine the relationship between principal attitudes and teacher attitudes at all grade levels. Also, a principal's role in implementing special education programs should be studied.

Abstract:
In the current environment of increasing cultural diversity, it appears vital that music therapists are trained to understand the issues involved in working with clients from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The purpose of this study was to examine professional music therapists' knowledge of and attitudes toward relevant multicultural issues. The study attempted to answer the question of whether there is in fact a need for multicultural training for music therapists, and if so, in what areas. A survey designed by the author was sent to 500 music therapists across the country, resulting in 298 usable responses. Analysis of the data revealed strong support for the underlying dimensions of multiculturalism, with weaker support for implementation of multicultural policies. Support for multiculturalism was correlated more strongly with attitude than with knowledge subscores. Data were also analyzed by age, gender, ethnicity, geographical location, and level of education. Significant differences in scores were found between respondents in the New England and the South Central regions of the country (p s .05). Significant differences in total and knowledge scores were found between respondents holding a Ph.D. and those with a Bachelor's degree. There were no significant differences between minority and majority culture groups. Females had consistently higher scores than males, but the differences were not significant. Also, with regard to age, results showed an improvement in attitude scores as age group increased. Results showed that 78.2% of respondents support multicultural training for music therapy students.

Abstract:
Economic analyses of legal partnerships are conspicuous by their absence. Recent theoretical developments within increasingly interconnected areas of law, economics and organisation facilitate more useful analysis of such issues. The resultant theoretical framework provides an ideal backdrop against which regulatory and related internal and external organisation issues concerning the legal profession in general, and law firms in particular, are discussed. Regulatory issues are discussed in the context of primary information collected during interviews with law firms. Partnership is one of only two currently legitimate practice options for UK solicitors in private practice, the other being sole practice. Presently prohibited corporate and multi-disciplinary practice (MDP), are under current consideration in response to growing pressure to attenuate restrictive regulation. Current proposals for further deregulation threaten professional partnership as an institution. Conve ntional wisdom argues partnership with joint and several liability is appropriate for legal service provision, where partners monitor each others' work quality and have an incentive to through cross-guaranteeing personal liabilities. Mutual monitoring, although important, is not the sole function of partnership, which performs a pivotal role in the wider professionalisation/ socialisation process of the lawyer, and in screening processes within firms. The comprehensive set of strengths and weaknesses of partnership and alternatives thereto are empirically assessed. Certain partnership problems, particularly those of large multi-partner firms, would likely simply re-emerge within alternative practising arrangements. Large firms confront mutual monitoring difficulties, reluctant delegation of decision making authority and cumbersome decision making procedures. The current tendency of growth in partnership size places great strain on partnership and question its longer term viability. The survivability of traditional screening procedures and informal incentive-penalty-reward systems within large modern partnerships are assessed within this thesis. Permitting a wider set of organisational options may do little to ameliorate these and other problems.

Abstract:
Recent corporate reporting history is well–known for its corporate failures and questionable accountancy practices, many of which caused the profession to be frowned upon. However, the splodge on the accounting profession?s reputation goes deeper than its corporate reporting failures. The scientific foundation thereof is also being questioned in academic circles. Even though accounting scholars have been trying to formulate foundational accounting theories, it has been the accounting regulators that have been more successful in promoting their versions of what accounting theory should be, which place a question mark on the legitimacy of current day accounting theory. This thesis aims to delve deeper into the foundational philosophies of accounting and its impact on the practice of accounting. With the current accounting globalisation efforts, the profession?s stewardship function is becoming less prominent in its promulgated standards, which in turn brings the focus on the many questionable ethical practices found in the profession. Even though the regulatory bodies require their members to commit themselves to professional codes of conduct, which entails competency, integrity, objectivity and confidentiality, the 1st article in this thesis claims that ethical conduct is more than mere adherence to rules and regulations. It is also about the image of not only the profession, but also accounting research and education. Accounting is broadly practised, researched and taught within its so–called conceptual framework, of which a key objective is to guide and inform accounting practice. The conceptual framework became the basis upon which accounting theory is based. However, many accounting scholars are openly critical of presenting accounting theory as a set of practical guidelines. The 2nd article in the thesis concludes that, from an academic perspective, accounting theory should be based on three quintessential guidelines. The first of which is its primary purpose of reporting on the historic economic events, secondly the provision of useable and comparable information about these events and finally, the facilitation of business decisions based on relevant and reliable information. In the above mentioned business decisions, the concept of value is often taken for granted and many accounting techniques? effectiveness is judged on how well it approximates an item?s value. The 3rd article argues that the multiple purposes for which accounting information is used complicates the issue of value, as reported by accounting. Two key conflicting valuation perspectives are the so–called decision–usefulness and true income perspectives. The current drive towards fair value accounting, as opposed to historic cost accounting, cast doubts on the reliability and relevance of accounting information. Even though it may be argued that value–based techniques are more relevant because it is a better reflection of the current business conditions, the mere subjective nature thereof and the accountant?s objective valuation skills make the true relevance of this information questionable. Furthermore, mixed model valuations found in financial statements makes cross–company information unreliable. Accountancy research of the past four decades focussed on the concept of user decision–usefulness. The user is also pre–eminent in the globalisation of accounting standards of the FASB and the IASB, where users are specified as the equity investors, lenders and capital providers. The 4th article acknowledges that although these user categories are important consumers of the financial data, there are other users which are also impacted by the financial information and the company?s operational performances. There are also concerns over accounting?s key assumptions, such as its quantification and predictive abilities, which are fundamental to the decision–usefulness objective. Furthermore, there are questions around how the regulators decided what information is suppose to be useful and what type of utility is being sought. In summary, the focus on the vocational aspects of accountancy stands in contrast to claims of accounting as an academic discipline in the social sciences. The reality is that the practices of the profession will probably always play a central role in what is taught at university level, and the regulators, as the final authority on accounting standards, will probably remain dictatorial in promulgating their versions of accounting theory. Yet, accounting and its wide spread impact on society, makes it a key discipline within the economical and management sciences. It is therefore essential for the resurrection of accounting as a social scientific discipline that there is a return to foundational accounting research that will prepare (and enable) prospective practitioners and academics to question the status quo and push back on accounting practices that are threatening to extinguish the flame of accounting scholarship.

Abstract:
The current capitalism stage produces a fierce competition to the companies that have the survival as the most urgent necessity in a constant changing scene. In this circumstance, a new profile about work relations in capitalist companies is drawn. According to the authors Capelli (1999) and Boltanski and Chiapello (2002), these relations keep several inconsistencies. One of main inconsistence is considering people as organizational active and expecting a high level in participation, but at the same time, the logic that guides the working relations seems to be short deadline results and weakness of employment bond more and more. The current research aims to know the graduated professionals perception of capitalist companies about current working relations and their possibilities of being subjects in this context. The results suggest that individuals seem to think about current working relations in the companies as a game with uncontestable rules that present few chances of interfering. At the same time in which they show this conformity level with the game rules, they also, however, seem to feel anguish and frustration due to lack of enough space to express their believes and expectations completely. Moreover, they reveal that the effort in keeping the employability has a high personal dedication and the companies participate of this dedication weakly, leaving the responsibility only to the individual.

Abstract:
Background: Therapeutic training is considered as the beginning of therapists' professional development. Research exploring the experiences of therapeutic training, particularly the experiences of trainee counselling psychologists is scarce. Additionally, research exploring the experiences of therapists integrating a new model of therapy is also limited; this is a surprising fact given the growing development of the integration movement in the therapeutic world. Aims: The present study explores how trainee counselling psychologists, with a prior training in a 'core' therapeutic model, experience and make sense of their current training in counselling psychology. As a secondary aim, this study explores how these trainees experienced integrating a new model of therapy in their practice and the process of integration within the context of counselling psychology training. Participants: Six trainee counselling psychologists from three different training courses based in the UK, who had all been previously trained in a single school model (primarily person-centred) participated in the study. Method: The present study is an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) study. Data were collected through single, semi-structured, in-depth interviews during which participants were invited to reflect on their experiences of training. Findings: The five super-ordinate themes that were identified in the participants' narratives are: 'Desires, Expectations and Needs from counselling psychology training', 'The turbulence of counselling psychology training', 'The Questioning I', 'The Changing Self' and the 'Finding Peace'. Each of these themes described different components of these trainees' experience of counselling psychology training and reveal that it is a challenging experience on both an emotional and an intellectual level. Discussion: The identified findings of the present study deconstruct, illuminate and are illuminated by existing theoretical and empirical literature. These findings shed light on the cyclical process of professional development within the context of professional training in counselling psychology in the UK.

Abstract:
This is an interpretative case study of four Grahamstown Education District Further Education and Training (FET) schools. The study sets out to investigate how Geography teachers integrate mapwork and environmental issues using local context, with the intention of providing insights for future professional development. Data for this study were generated using qualitative methods such as document analysis, semi-structured interviews and lesson observations. Interviews were conducted with geography teachers, the subject advisor and a workshop facilitator. The evidence generated in the study revealed that contrary to the integrative design of the curriculum, there is a superficial integration of mapwork and environmental issues as well as a cursory reference to and use of local context. This was noted in both professional development support workshops and classroom practice. The study finds that efforts to improve performance in geography need to pay closer attention to curriculum policy that calls for an integration and localization of knowledge and skills for coherence and relevance. It also notes that there is a need for a focus on real-world problem solving in social, economic, cultural and physical environments through the use of inquiry-based local fieldwork. Local investigations provide an integrative space for content and skills as well as being an important point of reference from which learners can compare and contrast issues in other places such as provincial, national, continental, and global locations. A professional development programme that emphasizes integration and contextualization alongside the current focus on basic skills training is proposed to improve what teachers are delivering in the classroom and to support enquiry-based fieldwork and research to strengthen a place-based relevance in local, national and international contexts. Finally an exemplar for professional development is briefly developed for the topic of soil erosion.

Smith, Jennifer. "What are mothers' and healthcare professionals' experiences of infant feeding within the current policy context and culture of healthcare in England?" Thesis, University of Hull, 2014. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:11526.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Increasing breastfeeding rates is a longstanding goal of health policy in England. Rationale for this is premised upon the health benefits to both mother and child conferred by exclusive breastfeeding. Current UK Infant Feeding Policy (IFP) derives from international guidelines incorporating the Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) that promote exclusive breastfeeding. Such ‘evidence informed policy formation’ is emblematic of the current context of health policymaking. However, the impact of current IFP upon women and healthcare professionals is under researched. Aim: This study explores the impact of IFP upon Women, Midwives and Heads of Midwifery services in England and considers the implications for maternity services. Methodology: A qualitative design used semi-structured interviews to determine the experiences and views of IFP with eight Heads of Midwifery and eight Midwives. Six women underwent three interviews exploring their infant feeding journeys at: 8 months pregnant, 1 month and 6 months’ post-partum. Data were analysed using Colaizzi’s phenomenological method. Findings: Three key themes arose contributing towards understanding the context of IFP: Being with IFP, Discourses of Self-Determination and The Emotion work of Compliance. For Midwives: The socio-political context of health and health-care system policy is multifarious but contains identifiable spheres relating to current IFP. Midwives do not appear to actively engage in the political process of this type of policy generation. For Mothers: Infant feeding remains emotionally fraught territory. Three key themes arose from the first interview: Adopting a Stance, Formulating a Vision and Processing the Dialogues of Infant Feeding. The second interview engendered three more key themes termed: Being with the Reality of Infant Feeding, Regaining Selfhood and Seeking Companions. Discussion and Conclusion: Foucault’s analyses of power and governmentality were used to explore the ‘Art of Midwifery’ vs the ‘Art of Governance’. Lack of holism and neoliberal agendas dominating current IFP may be detrimental to maternity service provision as they compromise decisional autonomy for women and clinical autonomy for midwives.

Azemikhah, Homayoon. "The Double Heuristic Method: perspectives on how teachers deal with an alternative model for teaching in the VET sector." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/86274.

Abstract:
The aim of this research has been to investigate how teachers in Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Australia deal with the Double Heuristic Method (DHM) as an alternative model for teaching in the VET Sector. The context is set within a vocational educational landscape globally, highlighting approaches in the delivery of vocational education in the USA, European countries and Australia. In pursuit of these approaches, various typologies of competency-based training (CBT) are explored. The VET systems around the world have been undergoing a period of continuous reform, moving VET systems towards a more holistic approach of teaching and learning in higher education. In such a context, the Australian VET sector has been and continues to be faced with challenges in the implementation of the Australian Training Packages, the core curriculum for the VET sector. This inquiry has been implemented within an interpretive paradigm in seeking to capture teachers’ perspectives of using the DHM and to investigate how VET teachers deal with the pedagogical challenges in their work. Central to the research question is investigating how teachers deal with an alternative model of pedagogy, the Double Heuristic Model, from their own frames of reference, and as they experience it. Qualitative methods have been used for data collection and analysis. The primary source of data was a series of semi-structured interviews. The data analysis was based on the principles of grounded theory method as outlined in the work of Strauss and Corbin (1990) whereby participants are placed in a position to consider a phenomenon and how they make meaning of that phenomena. In pursuing this approach to methodology in the two years of data collection and analysis, all three types of coding were utilised: open coding, axial coding and selective coding (Strauss and Corbin, 1990). As the Double Heuristic Method is a relatively new approach in vocational education in Australia, there has not been any prior research on its use in this area. Hence, this research contributes to developing new insights into teachers’ perspectives and responses to one approach in teaching the Units of Competency in the Training Packages in Australia, using an alternative pedagogical framework.

The research is focused on professional indemnity insurance for architects in Namibia. Professional indemnity insurance is not currently provided for in both the Architects' and Quantity Surveyors Act (Act 13 of 1979) of Namibia, or contracts used by architects in Namibia. The absence of professional indemnity insurance in contracts used by the Namibian built environment must be addressed, in order to create awareness of the risks involved in practising without professional indemnity insurance. This study will contribute to the knowledge of architectural practise in Namibia by emphasising the evident gaps in the existing contract data, namely the Architect's and Quantity Surveyor's Act (Act 13 of 1979) and the Client Architect Agreement of the Namibia Council for Architects and Quantity Surveyors. It is envisioned that passing a bill in parliament, making professional indemnity insurance compulsory for all registered professionals, will benefit the Namibian architectural environment. An applied research model is selected by implementing triangulation. The approach starts broadly in the architectural environment of Namibia, addressing issues of contracting and governing legislations, before focusing specifically on professional indemnity insurance and the need for it in the Namibian built environment.

Alberts, Gerbrand Pieter. "Tax education in South Africa : a survey of the current perceptions of educators." Diss., 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/26405.

Abstract:
Taxation is an ever changing field and the need for people who specialise in this area is continually growing. As a result of this the need for specialist tax related services; it has evolved into a profession of its own for quite a while in South Africa. Professional and specialised consulting occupations require a certain degree of specialisation to attain a level of superiority in the commercial world. To attain the status of a professional or to enjoy the status of specialised consultant requires extensive training and education. Taxation is taught at most universities albeit not as a degree in its own right but there are some exceptions. Currently South African universities offer a number of different undergraduate degrees that incorporate the discipline of taxation as a subject. Currently there is no set of standards or a professional body that regulates any individual claiming to be a tax specialist or practitioner. Consequently it is unsure whether or not the spectrum of topics and other required content included in the various degrees offered by South African universities, is educated at the required level to provide students with the necessary practical and theoretical skills, as well as other desired qualities, to survive in the ever changing and evolving world of taxation and be successful as a professional tax practitioner as expected by their employers. Using questionnaires, data was obtained from the tax departments of the universities accredited with SAICA. The results indicated, as expected, that a higher level of knowledge is expected of a student with a postgraduate qualification. In addition to this the more specialised the industry/field becomes to which the specific tax topic applies, the lesser level of knowledge is expected of a newly qualified candidate irrespective of the qualification. The conclusion drawn in this study was that educators place a high level of expected theoretical knowledge, practical skills and personal attributes on a newly qualified student but this level does not necessarily coincide with the level expected by employers. Consequently educators and employers need to reach a consensus about the curricula included in various degrees offered by South African universities in order to prepare them for practice.

Under the present categorization system established for professionalengineers in the nation, there are too many branches existing, which has resulted in numerous arguments among professional engineers fighting for their practicing fields. For instance, professional engineers working in the government tend to support legal enactments and amendments by using their executive authorities in their favor. On the other hand, the Professional Engineers Associations will try to persuade their favorite representatives in the Congress to advocate on their behalf. In most circumstances, these efforts will only lead to the result of their own respective favors as well to avoid professional obligations. The outcomes that follow do not conform to public interests nor to the interests of public safety. To some of the more popular fields of engineering, the above problem is rather serious, and to those of unpopular branches these engineers may have no job to practice at all. For these branches, the engineering departments at school may be established for faculty only, without any practical interests which becomes wastes to social and educational resources. They ought to be integrated into larger ones. In this connection, it becomes an imminent task for the government to review and revise the current categorization system for professional engineers. This research investigates the pros-and-cons of professional engineers categorization system in some foreign countries. The author intends to compare the present professional engineer system with those set up for medical doctors, accountants and attorneys-at-law in this country. The author also tries to acquire different opinions from scholars and professional of various fields and professions. Upon comparisons made with these studies together with recent efforts contributed by the government and professional engineers associations in supporting legal enactments and amendments, the author hopes that the professional engineers will be able to practice in design, constructions and field supervisions by professional certifications under appropriate legal regulations. In conclusion, the main purpose of this research is to provide a long-lasting reformatory proposal that can be used as a guideline for Government regulation in the future. It is the authors hope that, througth the efforts of the government, Congress and professional engineers, the results can be used to improve the living environment of the country to a higher level in quality.

For many years, the construction industry in Taiwan has been frequently criticized for the unsatisfactory project quality and consequential damage. Even though there many complicated factors, the problem can be mainly attributed to human factors. In addition to professional skill and knowledge insufficiency, many human factors are related to professional ethics. The purpose of this study is to investigate the current ethics-related problems in Taiwan’s construction industry and find out the influences of changes in systems and legal regulations by comparing its findings with those of past research. Through the literature review of engineering ethics research in Taiwan and other countries, this study explores the current conditions of professional ethics and moral values in the construction industry and analyzes the influences of different variants on professional ethics so as to find out the influencing factors. This study adopts questionnaire survey on engineers from general contractors, design consultant companies, governmental organizations and private organizations to investigate and analyze their professional ethics. The questionnaire results are statistically analyzed to find out the connections among the personal attributes of the engineers, their moral values and propensity of taking bribery. Through the investigation, statistics and analysis, this study reaches the following conclusions: 1.It is found that those engineers who are senior and married tend to have firmer personal moral values after having accumulated more engineering experiences and social experiences. This finding is rather meaningful for the construction industry; therefore, it is suggested that, in the selection of members for a project team, the proportion of different age groups should be appropriate with senior engineers accounting for a certain ratio. This will probably be helpful for the team to demonstrate better engineering ethics and then achieve successful results of the project. 2.Among the surveyed engineers, most think “low-cost bidding” and “lobbying and influences through connections” have the most negative influences on engineering ethics. As for how to build an environment beneficial for the interests of the general public and for engineering ethics, it requires the government to hold public hearings that thoroughly review the related legal regulations, bidding modes, suppliers, and ethical codes of engineers.
