Abstract:
Objective: To provide a historical perspective on factors that have shaped the current structure of athletic training education, and to advocate development of a new conceptual framework for a continuum of professional education in athletic training. Background: Athletic training is a relatively young profession that has undergone significant planned change in education and credentialing to enhance the practitioner knowledge and to promote the credibility of the profession within the healthcare community. However, comparison of the prevailing model for basic and advanced professional education in athletic training to those of other health professions reveals major structural differences. In an effort to promote an integrated approach to the spectrum of athletic training education, and to be consistent with terminology used by other health professions, the term professional education is used to designate entry-level education and the term post-professional education is used to designate post-certification, or advanced, education. Conclusions: Perceived problems with the current educational structure, along with advocated changes, are presented to clarify issues that will affect the future of the athletic training profession. Although change inevitably generates controversy, a failure to address these issues will almost certainly impede advancement of the profession.

Abstract:
Transdisciplinary care and collaboration among team members is necessary and essential to maximize patient outcomes. Collaboration is the most effective when professionals understand the unique role of each discipline. This is potentially more difficult when disciplines overlap in some services provided, or when an individual on the team is dually certified. In pediatric care settings, this is often the case for recreational therapy (RT) and child life (CL). The purpose of this study is to highlight the benefits of transdisciplinary care, as well as summarize similarities and differences between the two fields based on profession-based documents. Findings indicate 28 unique areas of RT practice, 18 grey areas (items found in both RT and CL profession-based documents with shades of differences), eight items found in one profession that are highly likely to occur in both professions, and 31 areas of similarity. Items of similarity do not raise concern, as the items appear to be common among many healthcare professions, such as developing a therapeutic relationship and conducting an assessment. Differences stem from underlying principles of each profession. RT is primarily a treatment/therapy-based profession (eg, functional skill development), whereas the foundation of CL is a helping-based profession (eg, coping within the hospitalized environment). RT must effectively deliver a message of its unique contribution to the healthcare landscape with special emphasis on functional skills development, client and family education and counseling, and community integration and transition training related to maximizing healthy engagement in play, leisure, recreation, and community activities post hospitalization for continued recovery, development, and prevention. Methods of disseminating findings and strengthening RT evidence-based research in pediatric acute care are provided, along with suggested opportunities for collaborative research.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To examine sectoral differences in the professional activities and self-images of Israeli pharmacists. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Pharmacists from private, community, and hospital sectors (n=145) completed a survey that assessed the rewards accrued from their professional activities as pharmacists and evaluated their professional and sectoral self-image. RESULTS: Few intersectoral differences were found among Israeli pharmacists. Most agreed that the main rewards in the public sector are secure employment, intellectual challenge, and responsibility. In the private sector, the rewards are high income, responsibility, and opportunity to counsel. The majority of pharmacists in all sectors are satisfied with their profession, and 90.7 percent would choose it again. Nevertheless, they ranked pharmacy eighth among nine professions chosen for comparison, which shows quite a low professional image. The private and hospital pharmacists attributed a higher social status to their own sectors than to the community sector. CONCLUSIONS: The inferior professional self-image held by pharmacists, despite the rewards of the profession, should be examined in greater detail.

Abstract:
Various studies show that the rating of the social workers profession is not very prestige in comparison with other professions. Often the leading motives why people choose to do social work are those guided by relative ideals, such as the desire to help people or to accomplish something socially significant not because of the prestige of profession. However, judgements about the occupational prestige in the wider community depend largely on the professional beliefs of social workers themselves and on how social workers themselves are positioning their profession. The focus of the authors of this article on the occupational prestige is analysed from the perspective of social workers in the sector. The study was carried out using a quantitative approach. In this study, the occupational prestige is considered in the context of symbolic capital. According to P. Bourdieu all forms of symbolic capital accumulates through relations of exchange The study results indicate that a significant part of the respondents feel the lack of authority and symbolic power. The symbolic capital in the form of professional capital is an essential factor of the authority and symbolic power of the social worker's profession, which, in turn, affects the occupational prestige in the society.

Abstract:
Competency-based education is designed to produce quality graduates and competent practitioners in social work. However, comparative studies to identify how social work education adapts to demands in practice from employers in coordination with the development of the profession across nations are rare. This study examines the influence of education quality and profession commitment on undergraduate social work students’ perceptions of their professional competence in Indonesia and Taiwan. A sample of 872 senior-year students from private and public universities was surveyed using a structured questionnaire. The analysis found that in the two countries, both education quality and professional commitment were positively associated with students’ perceptions of competence. Additionally, students’ commitment was a relatively important predictor in Indonesia but not in Taiwan. Implications for educators and profession development are discussed for societies where social work relies on the state for licensing and funding of practice.

Abstract:
Introduction: Three early studies from 1974 to 2000 provided information on demographics and salient characteristics of the profession of orientation and mobility (O&M). The current study compared demographic information from those studies with data from a survey instrument administered in 2019. The purpose of this article is to examine changes in demographics that have emerged in the ensuing years. Method: The questionnaire was disseminated using Qualtrics. It was distributed to practitioners in the profession via all available professional electronic discussion groups and was advertised on the websites of the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP) and Association for the Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER). Findings: The number of O&M practitioners who responded to the survey was 628. Data indicate that the O&M profession is still predominantly Caucasian, and females continue to be in the majority and have expanded within the profession. The percentage of O&M practitioners working in school settings increased by 14% from earlier studies, and respondents had a median age of 41–50 years. Discussion: The results of this study show that the profession remains primarily female, mostly Caucasian, and 65% of practitioners are 41 year of age or older. O&M practitioners continue serving school-age students, thereby supporting results from previous studies. Finally, salaries of O&M practitioners have positively increased over time after accounting for inflation. Implications for Practitioners: Current characteristics of O&M practitioners have implications for recruitment of more diverse young professionals to serve the diversity of those they teach. It is evident the field should try to increase diversity within its ranks to mirror the diverse population they serve. Moreover, O&M salaries have kept pace or exceeded inflation, and thus the profession continues to be attractive in recruiting qualified and diverse professionals.

Abstract:
Abstract The anticipated change of social work regulator in England from the Health and Care Professions Council to Social Work England in 2019 will herald the third, national regulator in seven years for the social work profession. Social Work England will be a new, bespoke, professionally specific regulator established as a non-departmental public body with a primary objective to protect the public. Looking globally, we can observe different approaches to the regulation of the social work profession—and many different stages of the profession’s regulatory journey between countries. Using a comparative policy analysis approach and case studies, this article looks more closely at three countries’ arrangements and attempts to understand why regulation might take the shape it does in each country. The case studies examine England, the USA (as this has a state approach, we focus on New York) and New Zealand, with contributions from qualified social work authors located within each country. We consider that there are three key elements to apply to analysis: definition of role and function, the construction of the public interest and the attitude to risk.

Abstract:
This paper provides an analysis of “elite” accounting practitioners during the formative years of the Canadian accounting profession (1880–1930). The social characteristics of this group in comparison with the Canadian population and the links between the accounting elite and other elite groups in society are used to evaluate the extent to which the profession achieved democratic ideals of access and social mobility for all members of society. The operation of the accounting profession as a democratic institution is argued to be an important aspect of the profession's claim to serve the public interest.

Abstract:
Abstract Between 1925 and 1932, the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC)—one of the oldest professional organizations for engineers in Canada—advocated vigorously for the inclusion of cultural and communications courses in university engineering curricula. Motivated by the perceived inferiority of engineering in comparison to the medical and law professions, this effort led to an important reconsideration of the social status and professional identity of engineers. The EIC challenged the self-identification of engineers as technical experts and forced the engineering profession to re-evaluate its pedagogical and public priorities. This paper documents changes in engineering mentalities between 1925 and 1932 and argues that, in these years, Canadian engineers fostered a broader understanding of their role in society.

Abstract:
In the middle of the twentieth century, the role of occupational therapy assistant was introduced in North America. Although the role, utilization and training of assistant personnel have raised much controversy and debate within the profession, Canada and the United States have taken very different paths in terms of dealing with these issues. This paper focuses on the history of occupational therapy assistants in Canada, using the experience in the United States for comparison purposes. The occupational therapy literature and official documents of the professional associations are used to present a chronology of major historical events in both countries. Similarities and differences emerge in relation to historical roots; training model and standards of education; certification, regulation, and standards of practice; career laddering and career mobility; and professional affiliation. The paper concludes with a summary of issues which require further exploration, debate and resolution if the profession is to move forward in Canada.

Abstract:
The main aim of this paper is to report on an online questionnaire which focused on translator and interpreter perception of their working world, their mindset or Weltanshauung, and the impact of Translation Studies and university training on that world. Questions, both closed and open-ended, addressed academic/professional training, present role(s) and attitudes and beliefs about ‘the profession’ itself. Nearly 1000 respondents replied to the questionnaire worldwide. Particular questions focused on how translation should be taught, the role and status of the profession (ideally and in practice), and on personal satisfaction. The results show that university training has had little impact, and that this group of respondents have relatively little interest in the university itself in comparison with lifelong learning, with most emphasis placed on practice and self-development. Members of the group feel themselves to be ‘professional’ due to their specialized knowledge and abilities. However, their professionalism is mainly limited to their responsibilities to the text itself, and there is relatively little interest in the wider context. They are acutely aware of the lack of public recognition, and both the interpreters and the translators agree that translators in particular suffer from a markedly lower social status. However, only a minority of the respondents feel the need to change the status quo and satisfy trait theory criteria regarding professional recognition, possibly because the vast majority of respondents are more than satisfied with their job. In conclusion, it appears that translation can still only be categorized as an occupation rather than as a profession, and it is suggested that a new role be created with its own university course to cater to the professional language provider.

Abstract:
Objective: The aim of this study was to assess health professionals' beliefs about the helpfulness of a broad range of possible interventions for mental disorders. Method: The study involved a postal survey of 872 general practitioners (GPs), 1128 psychiatrists and 454 clinical psychologists. These health practitioners were presented with a vignette describing either a person with schizophrenia or one with depression. The vignettes were taken from an earlier survey of the general public. Respondents were asked to rate the likely helpfulness of various types of professional and non-professional help and of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Results: Two-thirds or more of each profession agreed that the person with schizophrenia would be helped by GPs, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, antipsychotic agents and admission to a psychiatric ward. Similarly, two-thirds agreed that the person with depression would be helped by GPs, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, antidepressants, counselling and cognitive-behavioural therapy. However, there were also areas of disagreement. Psychiatrists were less likely than GPs and clinical psychologists to rate psychological and lifestyle interventions as helpful, while clinical psychologists were less likely to rate specifically medical interventions as helpful. Younger members of the professional groups and female members (who also tended to be younger) tended to rate a wider range of interventions for each disorder as likely to be helpful. Conclusions: Despite areas of broad agreement about treatment, health practitioners were more likely to endorse the interventions associated with their own profession. However, younger members of each profession tended take a broader view. If these age differences represent a cohort effect, health professionals may in the future show greater acceptance of the helpfulness of interventions offered outside their profession. These conclusions are limited by the methodology of the survey, which involved a questionnaire designed for the public rather than professionals.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Globally, companies increasingly publish separate general purpose, nonfinancial (sustainability) reports. Some of these are independently assured and assurers may or may not be from the auditing profession. We seek to understand this emerging voluntary assurance market. Using a sample of 2,113 companies (from 31 countries) that produced sustainability reports between 2002–2004, we use sequential logit analysis to identify the factors associated with the decision to voluntarily purchase assurance and the choice of assurance provider. We hypothesize that a company's need to enhance credibility through assurance and choice of assurance provider will be a function of company-, industry-, and country-related factors. Our results support the argument that companies seeking to enhance the credibility of their reports and build their corporate reputation are more likely to have their sustainability reports assured, although it does not matter whether the assurance provider comes from the auditing profession. We also find that companies operating in stakeholder-orientated countries are more likely to choose the auditing profession as an assurer.

Pakistan is paying special attention to its educational system and training of the teachers to improve the quality of teaching as a profession. One of the most highlighted elements in this educational development is the quality teaching practices in terms of National Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST).Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis techniques were applied to analyze the comparison between teachers and head-teachers' perceptions of NPST. Through simple random sampling technique 30 head-teachers (15 males and 15 females) and 300 teachers (150 males and 150 females) were selected. Two questionnaires were developed to assess the teachers and head-teachers' perceptions about NPSTs. The results revealed that comparatively female teachers who were more qualified and experienced were recently hired teachers who knew about National Professional Standards, were more enthusiastic about how to practice these standards in comparison to the teachers who had joined this profession in the late 80's and 90's.

Abstract:
The increased importance of reading professional literature in English coupled with the avalanche-like increase in access to information justifies the search for new approaches to profession-oriented foreign language education, including profession-oriented reading. A secondary linguistic persona can be formed in the course of study in a Master of Engineering program, among other things, through reading profession-oriented precedent texts. We define profession-oriented precedent texts as the ones that possess special significance for the research or professional activity of a specialist, primarily authentic scientific articles. The purpose of this study was to analyze the lexical structure of professional precedent texts through the Vocabprofile resource. The analysis revealed the following categories: the first thousand most frequent English words (K1); the second most frequent thousand English words (K2), vocabulary found in the Academic Word List (K3), words not included in any of the previous categories, mainly terms and professional lexis (K4).The results of the analysis and the comparison with popular and instructional technical texts offered to the engineering undergraduates in the English-language course reveal a larger percentage and a wider and more diverse lexical repertoire of the Academic Word List for the precedent texts. The percentage of terms and professional lexis in both types of texts is approximately the same, which indicates the adequacy of the profession-oriented course of English taught to the undergraduates of the Bauman MSTU. The results also point to the importance of the Academic Word List when teaching reading of professional precedent texts in English.

Relevance: State standards for professional (vocational) education of such professions as "seamstress", "dressmaker", "cutter" reveal the content of essential professional competences of these professions, as well as list general (key) competences common to all three professions. They have led to the need to identify a separate list of key competences required by employers of garment enterprises for each profession. Aim: analysis, comparison and generalization of the offer and demand for key competences of garment workers in the Ukrainian labour market; determination of personal qualities, demanded by modern employers of Ukrainian garment enterprises for such professions as "seamstress", "dressmaker", "cutter". Methods: the paper has analyzed, compared and summarized 270 vacancies and 344 curricula vitae available on Ukrainian and international job search websites to determine the level of needs of Ukrainian employers in the garment industry for garment workers with key competences (www.work.ua, www.hh.ua, www.rabota.ua). Results. The paper clarifies the statistical needs of employers of Ukrainian garment enterprises for seamstresses, dressmakers and cutters with key competences. It compares the offer and demand for garment workers and proves that they cannot adequately meet the needs of modern employers due to insufficient levels of their key competences. It highlights that dressmakers and cutters are the more in-demand workers with key competences and should work in the field of public services or a single production... Conclusions: the paper proves the interdependence between the need for well-developed personal qualities of skilled workers and types of profession and production. It reveals the role of garment workers' key competences in developing personal qualities required by Ukrainian garment enterprises for such professions as "seamstress", "dressmaker" and "cutter", as well as the connection between key and professional competences.

Abstract This paper examines how newly hired foresters are adapting to their profession and a career in the Forest Service in comparison to their range conservationist and wildlife/fisheries biologist colleagues. The sample consisted of 44 foresters, 27 range conservationists, and 38 biologists with 1-3 years permanent Forest Service employment in the Intermountain and Pacific Northwest regions, as well as 35 of their immediate supervisors. About half the sample were women. Most young recruits have found satisfying careers both in their profession and within the Forest Service. Foresters and range conservationists seemed to more readily accept organizational values and develop a long-term commitment to the Forest Service than did their biologist colleagues. Some women had difficulty adapting to their professions and to the Forest Service. The professional and sexual diversity of these new types of recruits has implications for their integration into the Forest Service, acceptance of their values and loyalties, and the evolution of a natural resources agency traditionally dominated by male foresters. The nursing profession in Germany is facing a public debate on legal and ethical questions concerning euthanasia on request and physician-assisted suicide. However, it seems questionable if the profession itself, individual nurses or the professional associations are prepared to be involved in such a public debate. To understand this hesitation, the present situation is considered in the light of the tradition and history of professional care in Germany. Obedience to medical as well as to religious authorities was long part of nurses' professional identity, but is no longer relevant. The lack of reflection and discussion on how to take a balanced view of ethical and political questions concerning nursing, and the role and responsibility of nurses in end-of-life decisions and situations of caring for dying people are discussed using the situation of nurses in the Netherlands as a comparison.

The paper deals with the issue of personality in the context of the professions of an elite tennis player and a project manager. The objective of the conducted research is to find a set of personality characteristics typical for tennis and project management and to find out which personality characteristics of the analyzed professions are similar, or different. To confirm the hypothesis H: "The personality characteristics of an elite tennis player correspond to the demands of his profession, just as the personality characteristics of a project manager correspond to the demands of his profession, and there is demonstrably a correlation in the personality characteristics of elite tennis players and project managers, which corresponds to a correlation in the demands of these two professions," we will use the Cattell's 16 Personality Factor Test, the Spearman correlation analysis, the evaluation of the relevant test indicators difference in statistical significance using the Student t-test, and the comparative analysis. A comparison of the demands of the analyzed professions on a person and a comparison of the personality characteristics of the elite tennis players and the project managers results in the conclusion that the personalities of an elite tennis player and a project manager are somewhat similar, as well as a striking difference between them in the emotional area. The hypothesis was confirmed. An elite tennis player can be a good project manager. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2023-07-04-019 Full Text: PDF

Abstract:
SYNOPSIS Much has been written about the so-called “millennial generation.” Many commentators believe that Millennials possess values and preferences that render them qualitatively different from the cohorts that preceded them. These writers have suggested, often without benefit of empirical evidence, that such differences will consequentially affect social institutions such as the accounting profession. This paper compares the generation of millennial individuals who are currently entering accounting with previous generational groups, represented by Baby Boomers, who entered the profession in the 1980s, and older students and younger professionals (Generation X). The results suggest that few personality differences exist to support the premise that the millennial generation now entering the accounting profession is truly unique. For the most part, differences are limited to growth need strength, and do not appear in locus of control or need to achieve. Implications for practice management are drawn.

Introduction. Librarians build their librarianship concept based on self understanding of interpretation of the reality from their professional activities in the workplace. This research is very important as the study of a concept of librarian profession from CPTA is limited in Indonesia. Data Collection Method. The research method used is qualitative with phenomenology approach. Five librarians participated in the IPDN Library. Results and Discussions. The results show the three meanings of librarian were as a valuable profession, as a promising profession and as an information service provider. The self-concept found in this study has been seen from three aspects: psychological aspects include a sense of confusion, a sense of comfort, a sense of pride and professional. Further, the social aspects involve being underestimated, harmonious relationships, respecting each other, creating intense competition and having good relationship. Physical aspects include being clean and neat, smart, versatile, attractive as a modern librarian. The motivation to become a librarian is salary and other incomes, competition, and opportunity to improve. Conclusions. The paper shows that librarians interpret themselves as a profession that has a value from the material perspective because it has benefits and allowances related to their work performance. Further research is needed to study a comparison between librarians formal education and librarians from CPTA related to their motivation.

Abstract:
Although a reasonable body of research exists with respect to women and some for African-American accountants, no study has provided a comparison of both groups' experiences across similar periods. The purpose of this paper is to provide an historical overview and comparison of these two groups of accountants for the period 1960–1999 in an attempt to illuminate the reasons for their accomplishments and lack of accomplishments in the public accounting profession. A review of the 1960s indicates that although discrimination against women was evident, white females fared slightly better than African-Americans, who were virtually nonexistent in the U.S. public accounting profession (Hammond 1997). During the 1970s both groups were excluded from any meaningful participation and were discriminated against when employed in public accounting. An explanation for this phenomenon was provided in 1976, as a result of the Metcalf hearings, when the Big 8 accounting firms admitted that they had not sought out women and African-Americans in the past and indicated it would take time to train and develop these individuals to qualify for partnership levels (Wescott and Seiler 1986). While the number of women in the profession had increased dramatically by the 1980s the Big 8 firms' records with respect to women partners were among the worst when compared to other professions (Maupin 1991). By 1989 only 4.1 percent of partners were women and Big 8 Accounting firms showed very little interest in recruiting African-Americans, which led Mitchell and Flintall (1990, 59) to conclude that “although there are more black CPAs than in the past, proportionately blacks fare no better than they did in 1968.” During the 1990s the representation of African-Americans and women in top-level positions remained marginal since the ranks of partners, principals, directors, and senior managers continued to be filled primarily by white males (Kinard et al. 1998). Research with respect to both groups indicated that they thought their career advancement opportunities had been limited and by the end of 1999 women were still underrepresented in senior positions and African-Americans were still underrepresented at all levels in the public accounting profession.

Background: Perception is a belief or opinion of people to interpret things. Perception plays a key role in molding the shape of an individual as a person and as a professional. As perception affects the working capacity of nurses, it is imperative to know about the current trends of perceived image of profession among future professionals. Methods: A quantitative comparative study was conducted involving 200 student nurses in order to assess and compare the perceived image of the nursing profession among freshers (B.Sc. nursing first year students) and outgoing batches (B.Sc. Nursing final year students), using convenient sampling technique. The study was conducted in both selected public and private institutions located within the Faridkot district of Punjab state. A five-point self- structured Likert scale was used to collect data from study subjects. Data was collected using the online mode via google forms after written informed consent from participants. Results: Perceived image of nursing profession was significantly more positive (p= 0.026) among freshers when compared with final year students. A highly significant association (p=0.000) was found in the perceived image of the nursing profession with the type of institution. Student nurses from private institutions had significantly higher positive perception about the profession. Most of the final year students felt that nurses don’t get due respect in the society. Conclusion: It is concluded that first year nursing students were more positive and enthusiastic about the nursing profession as compared to the outgoing batches. Students from government institutions had a drastically less favorable perceived image of the nursing profession in comparison to those studying in private institutions. Abstract:
At the core of New Public Management (NPM) reforms sit the concept of accountability of publicly funded organizations. In Canada, it is suggested that provinces have increased the number of accountability procedures imposed to universities and those measures would have had an impact on professors' academic workload. This study relies on the Canadian faculty's perspectives collected through the 2007 Changing Academic Profession (CAP) study (n = 1151) and the 2017 Academic Profession in the Knowledge Society (APIKS) study (n = 2968). Descriptive statistics and a MANOVA comparing the scores of five variables in 2007 and 2017 suggest that academic workload increased significantly in ten years, academic acvities are significantly more evaluated, although less by academics themselves, female academics report dedicating more time to administrative tasks and being more frequently evaluated, and senior administrative staff and external reviewers are perceived as being more involved in the evaluation of academic activities in 2017 than in 2007. Our interpretation is that accountability measures could increase professors' admministrative burden and grant more authority to non-academic staff. Key words: accountability; academic workload; academic profession; new public management; Canadian universities.

Abstract:
An international comparison of gender distribution in European psychology shows that the development of the profession is insufficiently documented in many countries, indicating that psychology is not yet very professionalized. Women outnumber men in all countries examined. In several countries, the ratio of women has remained so high over the past 20 years that psychology could be called a “female-dominated profession.” In other countries, the percentage of women has continuously increased, and psychology appears to be developing from an integrated profession to a female-dominated profession. However, we cannot refer to a female-dominated profession overall, as some occupational fields are dominated by men, while women work part-time more frequently and are less likely to gain permanent or higher positions.

Abstract: This paper aims to investigate the relationship between the professional status of public service interpreters and that which sociologists (Etzioni, 1969; Abbott and Meerabeau, 1998) have attributed to semi-professionals such as nurses. Drawing on the sociological theories of professionalization (Albrecht et al., 2003) and on certain hypotheses suggested by interpreting scholars (Sela-Sheffy and Shlesinger, 2011), the concept of semi-profession will be defined and discussed. Subsequently, the three sociological features shared by the two professions – the lack of specialised training, increasing feminisation and the caring nature of their tasks – will be analysed from a sociological perspective. To test these assumptions, the results of a global questionnaire on the status of public service interpreters – which gathered 888 responses – will be illustrated and commented. The data showed a close relationship between the two professions, which appears to confirm the hypothesis that nurses and public service interpreters are still following the path towards full professionalization.

Abstract:
This article is concerned with the political careers of local councillors. More specifically, the key question is about a possible professionalization of councillor careers at the local level in Europe. If the careers of local councillors tend to follow a number of standard routes, to what degree can these be perceived of as professionalized? In our effort to identify dominant courses of mobility, we distinguish between three successive stages of councillor careers: Pre-electoral experiences, in-council orientations, and future career aspirations. In the ideal model of professionalization there is a strong link between career stages. Professionalization is seen as a unidirectional process by which an occupational group gradually acquires the traits of a profession. By and large, local political careers in European countries do not adhere to the linear model of professionalization. Instead, a fits-and-start model seems more suitable, indicating that professional careers to a large extent are shaped incrementally, through learning and practical experience.

AbstractIntroduction In the UK, the General Dental Council specifies nine principles of professional standards that dental registrants must follow. There are views that such standards are high, patients' expectations are rising, and the professionalism of dental professionals is increasingly scrutinised. This paper explores whether the high standards expected in dentistry are justified. Methods We applied thematic analysis to 772 free-text responses from dental team members and the public to a modified Delphi survey. Respondents described their views of professional and unprofessional behaviours in dentistry. Data were obtained as part of a larger review of professionalism in dentistry. Results Two lines of argument were identified: professionalism standards are high, but justifiably so; and professionalism standards are too high. Within these, four broad themes emerged: patient trust; comparison with other professions; a culture of fear; and perfection. Conclusion High professionalism standards are justified in a profession where patient trust is paramount. However, a problem lies in the culture that surrounds professionalism in terms of litigation and dental professionals feel pressure to possess an unattainable, infallible nature. These negative impacts need minimising. We suggest that undergraduates and continuing professional development approach professionalism with care, to foster a supportive, positive and reflective culture of professionalism.

The phenomenon of high attrition and dropout among novice teachers has been widely recognized as an issue that must be addressed. The current study aimed to explore this phenomenon in the field of physical education (PE). A longitudinal study using a mixed-methods approach was conducted. The participants consisted of 119 novice teachers at three points in time: during, at the end of the first year of internship, and two years after internship. Instruments included questionnaires, a semi-structured telephone survey, and in-depth face-to-face interviews. Results indicated that the majority of novice teachers intended to stay in the profession mainly due to idealistic reasons. Emotional and professional support from senior staff and/or management proved to be important to their decision to persist in the profession. Barriers that were found distinctive to PE included poor working conditions such as a lack of facilities or equipment. Additionally, participants reported discouragement from the discovery that PE was perceived as a less important subject in comparison to other school subjects. The vast majority reported that they had not been sufficiently prepared for the realities of the teaching profession.

Abstract:
Gregory Tate, “Austen’s Literary Alembic: Sanditon, Medicine, and the Science of the Novel” (pp. 336–362) This essay examines the representation of science in Jane Austen’s unfinished novel Sanditon. It argues that this text, written in the months before Austen’s death in 1817, points to a development in her understanding of the novel, one that associates the form with the emerging scientific disciplines of the early nineteenth century through its emphasis on empirical objectivity and professional expertise. These traits are exemplified in the medical profession, which is central to Sanditon’s plot. Austen’s text presents a range of different types of medical knowledge and practice, and it celebrates professional medical advice as a safe middle ground between the commercial exploitation of quackery and the uninformed subjectivism of hypochondria. Similar issues are at stake in the text’s considerations of the literary marketplace: while acknowledging some of the problems involved in the growing commodification of the novel, Sanditon also satirizes the undisciplined reading habits of careless readers, and it promotes a view of the novel as an objective and professional articulation of knowledge. Sanditon’s advocacy of professional objectivity is conveyed in its narrative stance as well as its plot: the text focuses not on the subjectivity of a single protagonist but on the objective observation and experimental comparison of the interactions between a number of characters and between those characters and their environment. The essay concludes that the methodologies of science, as they were practiced within the medical profession, played a significant part in Austen’s understanding of the profession of writing at the end of her career.

Abstract:
This article provides an overview of the Shari’ah legal profession in the Philippines by scrutinising its status quo, identifying the indications of its future, and drawing some insights from its comparison to Malaysia’s Syarie legal profession. The recognition of the Shari’ah legal profession in the secular state of the Philippines is traceable to the Code of Muslim Personal Laws of the Philippines (Muslim Code), which mandated the creation of Shari’ah courts and the institutionalisation of the Shari’ah bar examinations whose passers are conferred the title of ‘Counselor-at-Law’. In view of the recent enactment of the Bangsamoro Organic Law (Republic Act No. 11054), this article will also highlight the implications of the justice system under this organic law on existing Philippine’s Shari’ah Courts and on the Shari’ah legal profession as a whole.
