Abstract:
This book is an authoritative practical guide to financial transactions under Islamic law. Global interest in Shari’a-compliant financial practices continues to increase, but Islamic financial products can often be hard to understand, not least because they often cut across rather than strictly align with more conventional financial products. This book provides the necessary explanation by describing the theoretical underpinnings of Islamic finance as a whole before going on to examine the major individual transaction structures in detail. The first part of the book informs the reader about the general background to Islamic finance and the relevant aspects (and sources) of Islamic law. It also considers the role of Shari’a supervisory boards, Islamic financial institutions and accounting approaches. The second part of the book concentrates on Islamic financial law in practice by focusing on individual concepts and techniques. This section explains the basic requirements for Islamic finance contracts both in terms of the underlying asset types and also both the applicability and acceptability of the underlying asset. Arrangements discussed include Mudaraba (trustee finance), Musharaka (partnership or joint venture), Murabaha (sale of goods), and Sukuk (participation securities: coupons etc). Takaful (insurance) is also examined in detail. A new chapter has also been added to this second part of the book detailing the principles of Islamic investment funds and commonly applied structures.

Abstract:
Structural reforms that increase competition in product markets, or increase flexibility in labour markets, can entail short run output costs unless offset by a demand expansion. When monetary policy is constrained and cannot carry out this short run expansion, there is a potential role for fiscal policy. This chapter quantifies these short run fiscal costs and long run fiscal benefits of reforms, and investigates how the design of reforms can affect this trade-off. In the model, both the costs and benefits of reforms are generally small, although increasingly large reforms entail larger rises in deficit-to-GDP in the short run. Results suggest that reforms in labour markets have little effect on public finances in the long run, but can help to ameliorate the short run costs of product market reforms.

Abstract:
Financial behavior is a complex subject because how people should behave according to traditional finance often differs from how they actually behave. Although traditional and behavioral finance play important roles in understanding investor and market behavior, this book focuses on behavioral finance. Behavioral finance uses insights largely from finance, psychology, and other disciplines to explain how people act and how their behavior affects markets and other financial applications. This chapter provides an overview of behavioral finance, followed by a brief explanation of the book’s purpose, distinguishing features, and intended audience. The chapter outlines the book’s structure of: (1) financial behavior and psychology, (2) financial behavior of major players, (3) financial and investor psychology of specific players, (4) psychology of financial services, (5) behavioral aspects of investment products and markets, (6) market efficiency issues, and (7) application and future of behavioral finance.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the factors that affect the firm’s decision to undertake product innovation. The discussion encompasses the driving forces that encourage product innovation, for example innovation by others or the ageing of an existing product line; however, the basic rationale is the search for profits. The chapter also addresses decisions about: the extent of innovation in general; horizontal and vertical product innovations separately; and the location of innovations in product space. The role of market structures in the product innovation decision, uncertainty in the innovating environment, and issues relating to emulation and copying are also addressed. Constraints to product innovation that survey data indicate are most important—innovation costs, risk and finance, and the availability of qualified labour—are also addressed.
