Abstract:
Recent advances in information and communication technologies and data science have led to the development of smart connected products. These products have new capabilities that create value for both the user and the manufacturer. These developments are leading to a major paradigm shift. To take full advantage of the potential of smart connected products, manufacturers need to adopt new processes, especially in the design phase. Indeed, the choice of data that can be captured by the product at the design stage defines the potential value creation for the rest of its life cycle. The aim of this thesis is therefore to formalise a methodological structure to guide designers in the integration of value creation based on captured data. In order to propose a relevant and effective method, we first explore the challenges related to design and captured data. Based on the challenges identified, a method is then constructed. It is structured in two phases, each supported by a dedicated tool. The first phase is a creativity phase that systematically generates potential value creation based on captured data. The second phase is a decision-making phase in which the previously generated value creations are systematically ranked according to sustainability criteria. Experiments have validated the relevance and effectiveness of the proposed methodology. Through the method and its tools, this thesis work contributes to scientific and industrial research supporting the paradigm shift brought by digital technologies in product design

Abstract:
Purpose - The purpose of this master thesis is to enhance knowledge about how revenue models for smart, connected and integrated product-services come about. Thus, the author aim to primarily contribute to the revenue model literature with insights on processual characteristics and activities. Method – The thesis uses an exploratory single case-study approach, based on qualitative data gathered mainly from semi-structured interviews. In total six manufacturing companies and five experts within relevant areas were included in the study. Data were analyzed through an abductive analysis approach, and a combination of the Gioia Methodology and Thematic coding. Findings – The study’s main findings show that the process when designing revenue models for smart, connected and integrated product-services, is characterized by an iterative phase layout and a strong customer focus. Key activities include pilot project testing, continuous evaluations and an organizational transformation, beginning with some initial analyzes to continue with a stepwise implementation and rollout of a new integrated product-service offer. Research limitations/implications – This study is limited by the single case study approach, and the aim to merely develop theory, not practically test it. The study contributes to the revenue model literature by enhancing knowledge about the processual characteristics when developing revenue models. Also, the processual framework provides structure and guidance for management at mature manufacturing companies. Originality/value – The novel contribution of this study is a processual framework and enhanced knowledge about the design process in the so far scarcely explored area of revenue models for smart, connected and integrated product-services. Keywords - Revenue models; Servitization; Digitalization; Smart, connected products; Manufacturing industry Paper type - Master thesis

Abstract:
A quick-connect wheelchair power add-on unit (PAU) has been developed at the Human Factors Engineering Center of Virginia Tech. The objective of the new invention is to provide an inexpensive, highly portable product which can quickly convert a manual wheelchair into a power-operated wheelchair. This dissertation details the three year research and design effort to develop the new wheelchair PAU. Results are presented from a series of evaluations conducted to identify performance and user-interaction characteristics of the PAU. Interpretation of the results provides a prioritized list of identified design deficiencies along with wheelchair expert and design team suggestions for the next generation of design alterations. The three evaluations conducted with the second generation PAU prototype include a series of wheelchair expert interviews, a PAU performance evaluation, and a usability evaluation which utilized wheelchair operators as subjects. Also included in the dissertation is an explanation of the need for a new PAU, a description of the most recent design iteration, a literature review containing information about the history of wheelchairs, the condition of the current PAU market, and an analysis of wheelchair PAU consumers. The new invention was conceived and patented by Dr. John G. Casali of the Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) Department at Virginia Tech. This research was supported jointly by Southwestern Applied Technologies, L. C., of Roanoke, Virginia and Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology in Herndon, Virginia.

Abstract:
Many types of product meanings have been investigated in the consumer behavior literature, and these layers of meaning have been shown to influence consumer behavior. However, very little research has attempted to investigate product meanings having to do with provision networks, that is, the people, places, resources and processes involved in creating products and delivering them to the consumer. In addition, researchers in several fields have argued that consumers have lost an awareness of provision networks due to their increasing size and complexity in the modern economy. This research indicates that some consumers are indeed cognizant of the systems of provision for the products they consume. The results of this study indicate that some consumers expend effort to create and ascribe provision meanings for some products, and that these meanings in turn affect the consumer’s consumption decisions and experiences. In spite of the commodifying effects of modern market systems, these consumers exhibit an appreciation for products as the outcome of a complex system of relationships among people, places, resources and processes and have thus become reconnected to the provision of what they consume.

Abstract:
There are four prominent product graphs in graph theory: Cartesian, strong, direct, and lexicographic. Of these four product graphs, the lexicographic product graph is the least studied. Lexicographic products are not commutative but still have some interesting properties. This paper begins with basic definitions of graph theory, including the definition of a graph, that are needed to understand theorems and proofs that come later. The paper then discusses the lexicographic product of digraphs, denoted $G \circ H$, for some digraphs $G$ and $H$. The paper concludes by proving a cancellation property for the lexicographic product of digraphs $G$, $H$, $A$, and $B$: if $G \circ H \cong A \circ B$ and $|V(G)| = |V(A)|$, then $G \cong A$. It also proves additional cancellation properties for lexicographic product digraphs and the author hopes the final result will provide further insight into tournaments.

In order to move forward in terms of sustainability is necessary a profound paradigm and attitude change. Based on this, the current study seeks to contribute on new forms of appreciation and marketing of traditional food products from brazilian small producers. The industrial model based on more productivity dominated all market, and even agriculture. Despite of this scenario the craft production has persisted and they have faced challenges on producing, distributing and selling their products. Unfortunately, many farmers have restricted access to the market, and when they do, commonly is informal, unstable and devalued way. This doubtful market prevents the maintenance of the agricultural activity and then the family to stay in the rural area. The main goal of this study is the selling process of the Brazilian family farming, based on the production on a small scale. The study was developed in order to understand how the design contributes to minimize the fragility of artisanal food products selling. This may improve the flow of small farms production contributing to rural area family sustainability and keep their products as their main economic activity. Methodologically, the study was conducted from theoretical reflection, which was supported by empirical experimentation of De-lá emporium case. The results confirm that is possible to rupture with the logic of devaluation of Brazilian craft products, using the design to contribute to the development of human relational modes more dialogue and less discursive. Consequently, it will enhance productive territories (its products, people and traditions) through interpersonal approach. It was observed that strongest and fair networks between producers and consumers can be developed when more information is available and the communication channels are opened. In addition, it was established in artisanal scale that new business models, guided by the prevalence of personal relations to business are possible since in industrial scale they are already defined. In conclusion, we can note that the design can be used not only in industrial demand where it is already consolidated, but also to create spaces and systems to contribute to greater interpersonal approach and dialogue, increasing the chances of closer and intimate relationships.

Abstract:
Faced with many challenges, competitive organizations today are those that quickly transform new ideas into new products or services. This is why they are seeking to better control their innovation process and make it more efficient across all functions of their value chain, from the idea generation phase to their launch. In addition, over the past 15 years, large companies have opened up their innovation processes due to the need for shorter innovation cycles and shorter time to market. However, we note that there is virtually no formal approach in the literature related to innovation modeling that streamlines the management of the so-called "open" innovation process. In this context, we are developing a methodological framework by targeting the open innovation process in order to formalize it and rationalize its management. The Model-Driven Engineering approach implemented allows us to propose a formal approach to properly structure the management of open innovation. To this end, our research focused initially on the design of a conceptual model that describes the knowledge included in the scope of open innovation management through formalization in UML. This conceptual model is considered the reference base of our methodological framework since it is generic and can be applied to any type of innovation. Then, we proposed a life cycle model that describes the process of open innovation, based on collaboration and exchange between the different actors. We have detailed this model into collaborative business processes using BPMN diagrams to describe operational activities, and DMN diagrams to frame decision making activities. Finally, we illustrated this methodological framework on two case studies related to the field of connected health, in order to test its validity

Abstract:
Abstract: This thesis work was a part of Halmstad University’s Mechanical Masterprogramme curriculum done in favour of ABB Alingsås. Our industrial partnerproduces and manufactures low voltage electrical distribution cabinets, connectorsand switch gears. This project is focused on specific electrical connector used inABB’s trademark cabinets. These electrical connectors serve as both the input and output points for thedistribution cabinets. The product under scope is an extension connector calledADI3M which is used in conjunction with the large sized cable connectors(AD300). This is a sequential design optimization activity performed after theredesigning of the AD300 to ensure interface compatibility and also aimed atopportunistic cost reduction. The ADI3M should provide design compatibility withboth old and new AD300 connector designs along with the comfortable interfacinginside the CDC and SDC cabinets. With the design process and concepting knowledge gained from the course work inHalmstad university along with the ABB’s industrial exposure towards the powersupply networks we proposed four different design concepts. These design conceptswere then evaluated against interface compatibility, cost aspects, manufacturingreadiness, mechanical strength, heat generation and electricity conductionproperties. Among the product development techniques, we applied QFD processto generate the concepts, waterfall method to frame the engineering design processflow and morphological matrix to select the generated concepts. We then changedthe raw material from brass to aluminium and extrusion process due to its beneficialproperties compared to brass and copper with various other reasons explainedclearly in the thesis content. For the plastic cover we preferred poly-carbonate dueto requirements such as transparency, stiffness, etc. Two of the best feasibleconcepts were selected and the design proposals were prototyped using 3D printingtechnology. The 3D printing method used was fused deposition modelling (FDM).Later machined aluminium prototypes were then produced for the metalsubcomponents to do real time strength analysis and interface checks. Weperformed a theoretical product strength analysis using ANSYS19.2. Then resultswere then evaluated, and the final concept was chosen according to the factors suchas cost impact, easy installation and comfortable inter-component clearance. Finally, the prototypes were tested for IP rating fulfilment and compatible interfaceswith adjacent components. The consecutive activities to be done out of thesis scope is to conduct mechanicaland tests and record the performance. The future scope of this project is to developa hybrid design combining the AD300 and ADI3M connectors which would enableeasy product handling, simplified functionality and further reduce cost.

Abstract:
Background – Through the progress in information and communication technology (ICT) new possibilities to connect smart objects via the internet arose. The number of connected devices had a strong growth in the past years and will continue rising fast in the next years as well. This new kind of smart and connected products (SCP) enables a lot of new product capabilities which have an impact on the creation of new customer value and competition on the market. Related to that, companies have to deal with digitisation and the affects for their products and manufacturing system. Purpose – The purpose of this thesis is to investigate changes in the manufacturing system when the products are getting smarter and connected. A special focus lays on the well-established Lean thinking approach. The results shall help to understand what new circumstances the decision to make the products smarter and connected will bring for a manufacturing department. Methodology – Relevant literature was reviewed to gain a theoretical framework. For gathering primary data, a qualitative case study was applied. Meetings with members of the case company’s management were arranged to conduct interviews. Additionally, observations were made during a guided tour through the production shop-floor and at a company presentation. The interview was recorded, transcribed and evaluated. Afterwards, the results from the case study were analysed and compared with theory based on the theoretical framework. Conclusions were made. Findings – The differences or changes in manufacturing because the products are getting smarter and connected are much more electronic components and software. Furthermore, new operating equipment is needed. The new circumstances require new knowledge and skills. Therefore, people have to be trained. New problems occur e.g. software problems. The use of Lean tools can be more difficult and time-consuming because of missing know-how and improvements itself are becoming more digital. Contribution – This thesis investigated the effects on the manufacturing system when the products get smarter and connected, which nobody did before. A practical case study with interviews, observations and secondary data from the company was applied. Limitations – The findings match reality based on data from the case company. Available time and access to data from the company’s side were limited. This means that the generalisation must be done with caution. However, it can be said that the findings may apply to many other industrial companies of similar size and similar products.

Abstract:
This thesis set out to investigate what motivates an established manufacturing firm to add smart and connectivity features into its products and what considerations are made when doing so. Such a firm was used as a case study object, a firm that is considering digitalization in one of its product areas but has not yet finalized the strategy on how to move forward. The qualitative study was made using semi-structured interviews which included mostly respondents from this organization, but also respondents representing the customers as small company entrepreneurs.  A literature study was conducted to better define the subject of product digitalization. Previous research on smart and connected products as well as related business and market theories were identified as relevant, as well as literature on digital transformation. Based on the literature study, a theoretical framework was formulated in the form of an iterative model on product digitalization, where the business and market mechanics are included. A qualitative case study was then conducted in the form of semi-structured interviews, with topics considered relevant based on the literature study. The empirical data shows many similarities compared to the current literature on the topic. The literature study has identified these aspects as relevant to be considered by an established manufacturing firm and compared them with the case study firm: ·       Digital vision – with clear intent and outcome for both the business and the customer ·       Customer intimacy – services related to smart and connected products will increase the intimacy to the end customer ·       Business model – product sales business model will be transformed by servitization ·       Technology content – smart and connected products need integration of new technologies, such as hardware, software and data management ·       Capabilities – necessary capabilities and the ability to integrate and coordinate these ·       Competitive strategy – using digital technology to gain competitive advantage.  ·       Technology acceptance –what technologies are accepted by the customers and why The case study shows that the firm have identified several key areas affected by product digitalization. Many of these aspects are considered when making strategic decisions, and the members of the organization are including most of them when building scenarios. One area of concern is the ability to integrate and coordinate all necessary functions, both for technology and services. Another is the switch in mindset going from a predictable product business model to a innovate digital one. Offering services will bring them into more direct contact with the customers, and possibly change the role of the dealership network.

Abstract:
The process of innovation remains challenging for companies in general and for small firms in particular. Limited resources constitute an obstacle on the small firm’s path towards market launch and the need for supportive measures is evident. Today, as the technology is developing at an exponential speed, the time-to-market shortens, underlining that the innovation challenge of small firms is an urgent matter. Given the limited resources of the small firms, this thesis defines the access to external competence as well as an established new product development process as crucial factors for successful innovation. Providing these necessary functions, a public intermediary, originating from policies, is considered a viable solution. The contribution of this thesis lies in investigating whether or not a private intermediary, not supported by policies, can provide the same functions as a public intermediary. In addition, the thesis expands the knowledge about the intermediary functions present in the innovation process by relating them to specific phases in a generalized new product development process. The results in this thesis are qualitative, based on a profound literary study as well as a comparative case study, examining two diverse kinds of intermediaries in a micro perspective. The first case is a public intermediary, operating with a strong business focus, as its mission is to economically strengthen the Swedish industry. The second case presents a technology based consultancy firm, acting as a private intermediary and centered on questions related to R&D. Applying Howells’ (2006) intermediation functions to the two diverse cases, a comparative study of their offered functions has been performed. The micro perspective study has proved the acknowledged intermediation functions to be applicable to specific phases in a generalized new product development process. As several functions appear in multiple phases of the new product development process, the generalized process is observed to be iterative. This notion questions previous definitions of the intermediation functions during an innovation process, as the processes have been simplified as linear in prior research. Using the generalized new product development process as framework for a comparative analysis, it has been concluded that the private intermediary can provide the same functions as the public intermediary. In extension, the private intermediary is able to offer additional services, not legally permitted for the public intermediary, such as selecting external actors and negotiating agreements. As the private intermediary can provide an extended assortment of functions, while not being dependent on government funding, the question of whether or not the public intermediary still fills a necessary function has been raised. However, additional values, such as objectivity and a non-profit-interest have been linked to the public intermediary. As these attributes are valuable to the small firm, further studies on the support not incorporated in the investigated functions are needed.

Abstract:
The use of engineered wood products (EWP) in residential construction has increased in recent years. Most specifications for the installation of these components are found in proprietary manufacturer literature rather than in the building code. Although some home inspections include EWP prescriptive compliance, very little applied and academic literature addresses this practice. This lack of practical information and the lack of standardized inspection methods can result in undetected non-compliant EWP installations that fail to meet the minimum safety provisions of the building code. The goal of this project was to develop a visual inspection methodology, associated knowledge base, and software application for the inspection of EWPs and connector hardware (CH) in new residential construction at the pre-drywall stage. The methodology was based upon subject matter expert (SME) inputs and validation was derived from the use of a modified Delphi method that was able to the gather, collate, refine, and validate the research process and outputs based on the expertise of the subject matter experts. The concept of high face validity was used to establish project validity. Installation problems with EWPs and CH were noted by the SMEs partly because the use and installation instructions for proprietary products are not found in building codes. Building code officials (BCO) and home inspector (HI) SME responses indicated a need for a methodology and software to aid in the inspection process. Although authoritative reference materials for prescriptive installation are available, the scope of material is not consistent between manufacturers, and is presented in different formats for different brands. The developed software application provides ready access to reference materials needed for EWP and CH installations. No widely accepted inspection methodology is available, although the HI SMEs used systematic inspection methods. Inspection methods such as the top-down method and sighting along the patterns of repetitious framing elements can improve the detection of non-compliant installations. BCO and HI SMEs identified both component-specific and zone-specific techniques as a part of the systematic inspection methodology. Definable high risk areas for each EWP and CH were identified and the associated inspection methods may help the inspector reduce the incidence of undetected problem areas. Knowledge of the high-risk areas may also enhance the inspection. The developed software application was found to be a useful inspection tool. BCO and HI SMEs determined that functions of the computer software necessary for use included ease of use, onboard reference materials, specific inspection techniques, prepared comments, and technical illustrations.

Abstract:
The Residual Current Device (RCD) must ensure the continuity of service which means that no default other than those that can put the user at risk should make the product trigger, to avoid any inconvenience (freezer not supplied) or a financial loss (non-operation of a photovoltaic). The measurement function is made up of:- A torus for measuring the residual current, it naturally carries the sum of currents entering and exiting the installation- A plate shaping (filtering)- An actuator, the polarized relay which sets the threshold of the device (through its power of initiation) and provides mechanical energy to turn off power supply. These false triggering are caused by defaults initiated among the measurement chain. We can cite three main reasons:- Residual current too high (over-voltages on electrical network by common mode)- Radiated Magnetic Fields (current through the primary circuit of the torus)- Balancing the torus (differential mode) (current through the primary circuit of the torus)As the atmospheric over-voltages are considered to be the most critical disturbances, they will appear as the principal subject of this thesis. The main issue is the behavior of the RCD facing a lightning stroke. So, a well understanding of the manner that it will respond in such situations is necessary. The objectives of this study are to:- Establish a temporal model of lightning stroke- Highlight the different working phases in front of a lightning stroke- Establish a RCD's behavioral model adapted to every phase- Highlight the causes of unwanted triggers- Propose solutions enabling our products to not trigger by default and so improve the reliability of their functioning- Reduce customer returns

Abstract:
A set of indicators has been developed by the author of this work to assess the social performance of Vattenfall’s products (electricity & heat). This set of indicators has been adapted to the requirements of the International EPD® system. The aim has been to create a set of indicators that can be applied to all processes within the lifecycle. The indicators are supposed to make a best possible statement of the social performance of a companies’ product, including the most relevant issues and topics within the pillar of social science and social sustainability. The method used for the development of the indicators is the Delphi method. The Delphi process includes several rounds of reviewing. A group of experts usually carries out the reviewing. In this study five rounds of reviewing has been conducted with the help of nine experts. The first round has been an extensive literature review. The 390 indicators found in the literature have been classified according to the system and the instruction of S-LCA, which are described in the Guidelines for Social Life Cycle Assessment of Products. The fifth round of reviewing has been the last one and consensus on the list of indicators could be reached. The outcome of the development process has been a set of 30 indicators. Not all subcategories proposed in UNEP/SETAC’s Guidelines for Social Life Cycle Assessment of Products have been covered. The indicators have been distinguished into two categories: core and additional. Some important social issues could not be expressed in the form of an indicator. They have been added in the final outcome of the paper, the ‘socioprofile’, as additional information. The measurement and impact assessment of qualitative indicators have been a major challenge of this study. Data availability can be seen as another critical field of the study and the application of the indicators. Other studies that have been conducted focused on a lower amount of indicators. The study has shown the possibility to quantify and measure social impacts to a certain degree. The proposed indicators are aiming at a globally focused assessment of social sustainability. The inclusion of experts and the group discussions with those experts have shown the importance of these indicators. The next step in the development of social sustainability indicators is the implementation of these indicators in a practical application and the study of the outcome. To be applicable within the International EPD® system, the Product Category Rules also have to be updated to allow for a Sustainable Product Declaration.

Abstract:
Electronic Government or e-Government is an initiative that provides services to groups of users through an electronic system. Among these users may be other governments, public and private organizations, tourists, and citizens. When analyzing the wide use of Internet resources and the development of software driven by the complexity of the amount of information, there is a need to evaluate the directions of e-government. In this sense, Software Product Management (GPS) emerges as a driving force for success in software products, as it covers the entire lifecycle development, ensuring a technical and business perspective, which, with its many interfaces, business and stakeholders throughout the life cycle of a product. In this context, the general objective of this work is to investigate the actors and business functions of Brazilian federal universities in meeting ICT demands, identifying the differences and similarities with the actors and processes defined by GPS reference models defined in the literature. In addition, a GPS model adapted to the context of public universities is proposed. The whole methodological process of this study was based on a set of 5 steps, started from a systematic review. Among the results of this work are a case study that explains the context of software development in federal universities from the perspective of GPS; the construction of a research instrument to capture the state of GPS practice in federal universities; definition of an initial GPS model for e-government in the higher education sector, and a set of best practice recommendations suggested to implement GPS activities efficiently

Abstract:
The development of digital agriculture allows to observe at high frequency the dynamics of production according to the climate. Data from these dynamic observations can be considered as functional data. To analyze this new type of data, it is necessary to extend the usual statistical tools to the functional case or develop new ones.In this thesis, we have proposed a new approach (SpiceFP: Sparse and Structured Procedure to Identify Combined Effects of Functional Predictors) to explain the variations of a scalar response variable by two or three functional predictors in a context of joint influence of these predictors. Particular attention was paid to the interpretability of the results through the use of combined interval classes defining a partition of the observation domain of the explanatory factors. Recent developments around LASSO (Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator) models have been adapted to estimate the areas of influence in the partition via a generalized penalized regression. The approach also integrates a double selection, of models (among the possible partitions) and of variables (areas inside a given partition) based on AIC and BIC information criteria. The methodological description of the approach, its study through simulations as well as a case study based on real data have been presented in chapter 2 of this thesis. The real data used in this thesis were obtained from a vineyard experiment aimed at understanding the impact of climate change on anthcyanins accumulation in berries. Analysis of these data in chapter 3 using SpiceFP and one extension identified a negative impact of morning combinations of low irradiance (lower than about 100 µmol/s/m2 or 45 µmol/s/m2 depending on the advanced-delayed state of the berries) and high temperature (higher than about 25°C). A slight difference associated with overnight temperature occurred between these effects identified in the morning. In chapter 4 of this thesis, we propose an implementation of the proposed approach as an R package. This implementation provides a set of functions allowing to build the class intervals according to linear or logarithmic scales, to transform the functional predictors using the joint class intervals and finally to execute the approach in two or three dimensions. Other functions help to perform post-processing or allow the user to explore other models than those selected by the approach, such as an average of different models. Keywords: Penalized regressions, Interaction, information criteria, scalar-on-function, interpretable coefficients, grapevine microclimate

Abstract:
This study seeks to approach the teaching of L2 writing in the textual linguistics context. From the perspective of contrastive rhetoric, the study focuses on the dimension of argumentation and the cohesive dimension of texts produced by different groups of writers. In the view of comparative discourse, this study aims to analyze texts written by speakers of two groups of writers, including Asian L2 learners and native French writers. The texts gathered are submitted to the examination of the argumentative scheme (topoï), the relation of connexity and the thematic progression. Compared to texts produced by native writers, what characterizes the texts produced by L2 learners can be summed up in: 1. The extrinsic topos is prevailed in terms of argumentative warrant (topoï). 2. The topoï is defective in number; the absence of topos is repetitive and unpredictable. 3. The high rate of the absence of semantic relation is problematic for the text comprehension. Plus, the dependence on the simple addition relation does not help the interpretation of the text. 4. The linguistic realization implemented for textual cohesion is irrelevant with the logico (semantic) relation identified. 5. The variety of cohesion markers used is restricted. 6. The case of thematic break is more important; The frequent case of a thematic rupture calling for other successive thematic breaks. 7. An occurrence of thematic break is preferably followed by a non-linear progression. 8. The distance between the thematization and the initial reference element is relatively remote

Abstract:
Höganäs AB has a customer center where they perform their cutomers production processes usingtheir own metal powder, thereby gaining knowledge of how the powder behaves and how it can be improved. The powder is usually pressed, and then sintered in a sintering furnace where temperature and atmosphere composition gives the component its desired characteristics. Höganäs AB didn’t save the parameters from these process’s in a easily accessible way, some values were not saved at all. To increase understanding of these parameters impact on the produced detail they wanted these parameters collected and stored in the cloud. They also wanted solution ideas and concepts for implementation of weight measuring on both the in- and output side of the furnace. This project used Ulrich & Eppinger’s product development method, modified by performing continous testing parallell to the design process. The project was also separated into three parts worked on simultaneously. Computer architecture, physical casing and weight measuring. To compile and upload to the cloud a Raspberry Pi 3 B+, a micro processor, was used. It connected via WiFi to upload files to OneDrive. The measured values from the furnace were gathered from the furnace’s PLC via OPCUA and a gas measuring unit via serial communication. Because of the use of metal powder there was conductive dust in the air which could lead to leakage currents and short circuiting if it were to gather on the processor unit. Hence the dust had to be keptaway. The casing was therefore designed to be relatively airtight. The casing was made with 3D-printed PETG. The seal utilized PETG’s elasticity to elastically deform an elevated seal, and thereby sealing the casing, without having to produce more components than a bottom and a lid. The cable feedthrough used the cables elastic deformation to seal. A screen was implemented to start and stop logging processes, which was also sealed using an overlapping lip around it’s rim. The logging of the furnace parameters was split in two logs, a day-log and a job-log. The daylog took measurements continously over a day in long intervals, 30 minutes. At the end of the day a log was uploaded for that day, hence the name. The job-log had to be started manually via the screen and was used to take measurements with higher frequency during a production series. Log files of both types were uploaded to a OneDrive folder. The product was tested with a number of final tests, both for the casing and the software. The casing was tested primarily for the numerical requirements set in the requirements specification. While the software was tested over a longer period of time to ensure functionality. The final product was a sealed, robust, easily disassembled and cable strain relieved 3D-printed box with a 3.5 inch touchscreen and a connected keyboard. It collected the desired data and compiled it to log files readable by programs such as Microsoft Excel. The weight measuring concept produced was a self-made solution with load cells under the loading ramp. The weight is then measured automatically during the regular loading process without disrupting it. Two backup solutions were also put forward.

Abstract:
This thesis provides insight to the dynamics that come with the emergence of IoT in the furniture and kitchen manufacturing industry. The study is empirically grounded in an explorative case study that involves interviews with six manufacturing companies in the different industry sectors. The purpose has been to shed light on how incumbent companies adapt and implement IoT and the study highlight product features, aspects and challenges that companies are investigating and dealing with as they set out to work with IoT and connected products. The results indicate that companies are viewing IoT as an enabler that better can respond to customer needs and provide users with new experiences. By implementing the concept of IoT companies are currently evaluating how internal knowledge and skillsets correspond to the new technical requirements that the emerging digital setting outlines and by directing internal research they are learning more about IoT and connected products as they proceed. One current major problem is that there are no open protocols that can connect all products regardless of supplier. Nevertheless, implementation of IoT does not solely involve technical aspects and companies are also faced with the dilemma on how to design and develop corresponding commercial processes. To this point early product implementations have arrived on the consumer markets and the future vision is to achieve full integration that imbeds connectivity and interaction among all products in the home.

People use discarded after the end of the relevant product, if recovery through effective product, on the one hand reduce the waste of resources; help protect the environment, on the other hand to improve the effectiveness of product recalls, in past studies seem to connector-based product disassembly planning less, therefore, this study is based on past literature proposes connector-based product disassembly planning, improving the effectiveness of recycling waste products. This paper presents the release of clustering process (Release Grouping Procedure, RGP) method Connector distinction, trying to simplify the complexity of the product disassembly planning. On the other hand can be to assess the value of dismantling Connector , there will be no dismantling value Connector choose not to disassemble, reduce unnecessary dismantling costs in order to improve the overall product recovery efficiency. This study was to verify the feasibility of disassembling Connector based planning, so will do total disassembly and selective disassembly planning.First, do total disassembly planning to build the release diagram and breadth-first search and then use the Forward phase heuristic to seek out the best solution, after cost estimates for the Connector, and then the non-economic Connector for design improvements to improve product recovery efficiency. After the completion of the total disassembly planning, then selective disassembly planning established demolition selected release diagram, do the same with total disassembly planning process step, the final selection results selective disassembly planning will choose not to have economic Connector , the product can be reduced unnecessary waste disassembly process, helps to improve product recovery efficiency.

Many businesses build their own system to handle the End-of-Life product to satisfy the rising eco-awareness and to face the fact of limited resource. Disassembly planning should be considered seriously. Disassembly means to remove the connectors among parts so that parts can be independent from others. It makes the business be able to adopt the optimal strategy of processing these independent parts. Connector concept focuses how parts combine with each other. It consists of related information such as combination, tool, and direction. Combination and tool will determine the basis of cost. In addition, the sequence of removing connectors depends on the information of direction. The concept of connectors not only simplifies the representation of disassembly relation, but also reduces the complexity of the searching task. On the basis of connector information, release diagram will be built according to interference matrix of release direction. In addition, using modified Breadth-First-Search method to explore the release diagram features speed and flexibility. Finally, a stapler and electric fan were used as practical examples to illustrate the possibility of proposed methodology.

Traditions modular research is used the Liaison Graph to represent the connected of parts. This methodology that only has a relation of parts does not have enough information to handle the manufacturing. In order to achieve the objective of manufacturing, this study adopts Connector-Base concept to represent a product in a function viewpoint. The structure attribute of a Connector which contains fastener, direction, disassembly tool and parts is adopted in this study. In the other hand, this study also adopts a concept which is Design for Variety to respect the requirement of customers in a variety viewpoint. This variety information is the major criterion of modular research for manufacturing products. The algorithm of modular product is Gomory&Hu algorithm which considers the variety information. Finally, using the manufacturing information assign the parts to the Connectors. The major characteristic of this study is considering function, variation and manufacturing viewpoint in a modular process. The factors of this study could yield the modular result to apply in manufacturing products. Key Words: modularity, Liaison Graph, Connector, product variety,Gomory&Hu Algorithm

There has been increasingly strong competition in the industry of high-tech electrical products. Competition is even tougher among companies in this area compared with other industries. The challenge comes from the fact thatnew products are launched with short product lifecycle, raw material and key supply base resourcesare with constraints, and there is always demand dynamic from customers. In the meanwhile, with continuous development of few decades,China now is the global leader for product manufacturing. Discussion and research on the B2C model has been one of the main topics. There are fewer study and research in the area of industrial products, especially industrial electrical products. Most of the research on industrial product marketing are based on the perspective of supply side. This research takes a different approach to analyze customer requirement and behavior. Based on the perspective of actual requirement and demand from customers, the study is conducted among end customers of different industries. Analysis is mainly focus on the demand coming from customer side rather than from supply side. We propose a new sales and service model for wire harness product marketing. Through this model, our target is to provide a more efficient and effective way of working for customers from different industries.

Abstract:
Camera makers are now increasingly adding WiFi chips to cameras to make transferring photos to smartphones or computers easier. At the same time this new technology brings on the opportunity to rethink what a connected camera could be and how it might shape our relationship with these devices. As the features in our consumer cameras start to move beyond physical constraints of the device itself, we will rely more on the device’s inherent character to make sense of it. Through multiple workshops, experiments, mockups and prototypes I explored a set of alternative characters and concepts for our digital consumer cameras and ultimately give an example of how a playful camera might inspire us to look at ourselves and the world around us with new eyes.  The resulting provocation is KOPPLA, a prototype of an Internet-connected camera that treats its owners as a creative collective. It offers inspiring creative challenges at the touch of a button. These challenges come from other camera owners in the collective, from local communities or from organizations interested in gathering personal perspectives. The final design aims to provoke new ideas for what the industry considers a connected camera to be. In that sense, as a connecting rather than connected camera, KOPPLA goes beyond offloading photographs to a smartphone or the Internet – instead connecting its owners to new places, people and ideas.
