Abstract:
Dynamic and unforeseeable characteristic of the current market and production environment is not feasible to be met through pre-set parameters being dependent on the predictions. Handling this matter requires to keep focus on production system adaptability. Evolvable Production System has achieved fully system reconfigurability through process oriented modularity and multi agent based distributed control system architecture. One of the essential enhancements provided by EPS on the shop floor is achieving minimized/eliminated system setup time in response to changing product requirements. Manufacturing planning and control system, on the other hand, follows hierarchical principles which are quite much reliant on the predicted information so to structure production and planning environment on it. Production system limitations, such as lack of adaptability in response to changing conditions, are in fact influencing the planning system to be structured on the predictions. The enhancements which are ensured by the architecture of EPS enable to relax the constraints on planning system which are imposed by the limitations of production system. These enhancements have an effect at different levels in the planning hierarchy. On the light of these improvements, the planning framework as it is used so far in the industry becomes invalid and this arise a requirement for planning system structure to be designed according to a fully reconfigurable system to be able to benefit such a production system by all means. This thesis targets to enlighten the relation between the production system characteristics and planning system structure by emphasizing the planning problems and proposing a planning reference architecture solution to be able achieve a responsive planning framework.

Abstract:
The industrialization of construction work is one of the ways it is possible to achieve better quality and productivity in this competitive environment. However, in order to improve efficiency using industrialized technologies is not enough. There is a need to improve planning and control systems. Although the Last Planner System has been developed for the construction environment, since it was devised the successful results promoted its implementation in different production environments. Regarding lean production implementations, the system has been pointed out as a starting point for a company to achieve the basic stability. This study is focused in one type of industrialized production system: the engineer-to-order. By industrialized, it is the prefabrication that has been addressed. In these kinds of production systems, there is a need to integrate the prefabrication plant with the construction site needs. This research project aims to develop an integrated planning and control production planning and control model for ETO prefabricated systems, integrating design, manufacturing and site assembly. The research is part of a partnership with a steel fabricator company (Company A) that was interested in improving its production planning system. The research method is grounded in the design science research, in which there is an effort from the researcher to develop an artefact as an output of the research process, in this case, a planning and control model. The implementation adopted some strategies from the action-research, so some solutions needed to be collectively constructed between the researcher and the practitioners, in order to have an effective use in the organization. Following this strategy, it is possible to have same learning cycles during the implementation of the solutions, which are continually assessed and adapted in order to improve the processes analysed. The results are divided into four phases of implementation. In the first step the main effort was in consolidating an integrated planning and control process for the short-term in the production units. In the second step the focus was the overall system, mainly providing mechanisms to collect the status of all construction sites for the plant. The barriers to improve this feedback process brought to light the need for using visual management tools. This development concerned the third step of implementation, further improving the changes made in the previous phases. The fourth step was based on the analysis of the logistics processes, as the interface between the plant and site assembly. After the main empirical study on Company A, two studies were carried out abroad in order to understand a different context of ETO production systems. The first concerns a mechanical contractor situated in a high complex project. In this study, it was possible to develop some planning tools to facilitate the analysis between the fabrication and site installation of the products. The second concerns a steel fabricator focused on the structural system. This was a descriptive study that analysed the differentiation of the products provided by this company and the impact of it in the planning and control system. Based on the results obtained in the implementation process, the integrated planning and control model for ETO building systems was devised. Most of the processes proposed in the model were assessed in Company A. Although there is still a need to improve the production planning and control system of that company, the implementation enhanced the communication between the operational and tactics level and also promoted a systematic way to collect information for each level of the production planning and control system. The theoretical contributions of the research were the development of a framework to understand the complexity of this kind of production system; the identification of the main requirements for developing a planning and control system for this environment; and the adaptation of the concept of WIP using the status of the product.

Abstract:
Recent developments in the area of Cyber-Physical Production Systems prove that high technology readiness level is already achieved and industrialization of such technologies is not far from today. Although these technologies seem to be convenient in providing solutions to environmental uncertainties, their application provides adaptability only at shop floor level. Needless to say, an enterprise cannot reach true adaptability without ensuring adaptation skills at every level in its hierarchy. Commonly used production planning and control approaches in industry today inherit from planning solutions which are developed in response to historical market characteristics. However, market tendency in recent years is towards making personalized products a norm. The emerging complexity out of this trend obliges planning systems to a transition from non-recurring, static planning into continuous re-planning and re-configuration of systems. Therefore, there is a need of responsive planning solutions which are integrated to highly adaptable production system characteristics. In this dissertation, Demand Responsive Planning, DRP, is presented which is a planning framework aiming to respond to planning needs of shifting trends in both production system technologies and market conditions. The DRP is based on three main constructs such as dynamicity, responsiveness and use of precise data. These features set up the foundation of accomplishing a high degree of adaptability in planning activities. By this means, problems from an extensive scope can be handled with a responsive behavior (i.e. frequent re-planning) by the use of precise data. The use of precise data implies to execute planning activities subject to actual demand information and real-time shop floor data. Within the context of the DRP, both a continuous workload control method and a dynamic capacity adjustment approach are developed. A test-bed is coded in order to simulate proposed method based on a system emulation reflecting the characteristics of cyber-physical production systems at shop floor level. Continuous Precise Workload Control, CPWLC, method is a novel approach aiming at precise control of workload levels with the use of direct load graphs. Supported by a multi-agent platform, it generates dynamic non-periodic release decisions exploiting real time shop floor information. As a result, improved shop floor performances are achieved through controlling workload levels precisely by the release of appropriate job types at the right time. Presented dynamic capacity adjustment approach utilizes rapid re-configuration capability of cyber-physical systems in achieving more frequent capacity adjustments. Its implementation architecture is integrated to the CPWLC structure. By this means, a holistic approach is realized whereby improved due date performance is accomplished with minimized shop floor congestion. Hence, sensitivity to changing demand patterns and urgent job completions is improved.

Stephenson, Paul. "Estimating, planning and control systems based on production data in the construction industry." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 1988. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/20400/.

Abstract:
The processes of estimating, planning and control within the building industry are seldom fully integrated. This study considers the integration of the processes based on production data collected from several projects. The aim of the research is to investigate the feasibility of the integrated approach as a means of improving the estimating, planning and control processes within the construction industry. Selected cost significant work sections are considered in the study and production data are formulated based on feedback information from several first sample projects. Comparisons are made between average production data and individual project data. A structured systems analysis of the collaborating body identifies existing processes and production orientated information requirements. A model and working system prototype are developed which illustrate integration of the processes and generation of management information. Application of the model as a basis for estimating and planning at various levels of detail is demonstrated. Forecast-observation diagrams provide the necessary control mechanism for monitoring production outputs. Forecasts on a second independent sample of projects are assessed based on tolerances of performances from first sample projects. Accuracy of average forecasts from the model are compared with other data sources, these being estimators' data used in the preparation of the estimate, and bonus surveyors' targets used during the production process. The research concludes that the production data and model give a worthwhile improvement over existing methods in forecasting average productivity performances when methods of placing can be clearly identified and related to work packages. The production data and model are insufficiently accurate to give a worthwhile improvement when measured items cover work packages of varying degrees of complexity, and when proportioning methods are used to obtain production data for different categories of items which collectively represent work packages. Assessment of the model together with refinements are also discussed.

Rodger, Martin A. "An approach to the development of expert systems within production planning and control." Thesis, Aston University, 1990. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/15149/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis presents an account of an attempt to utilize expert systems within the domain of production planning and control. The use of expert systems was proposed due to the problematical nature of a particular function within British Steel Strip Products' Operations Department: the function of Order Allocation, allocating customer orders to a production week and site. Approaches to tackling problems within production planning and control are reviewed, as are the general capabilities of expert systems. The conclusions drawn are that the domain of production planning and control contains both `soft' and `hard' problems, and that while expert systems appear to be a useful technology for this domain, this usefulness has by no means yet been demonstrated. Also, it is argued that the main stream methodology for developing expert systems is unsuited for the domain. A problem-driven approach is developed and used to tackle the Order Allocation function. The resulting system, UAAMS, contained two expert components. One of these, the scheduling procedure was not fully implemented due to inadequate software. The second expert component, the product routing procedure, was untroubled by such difficulties, though it was unusable on its own; thus a second system was developed. This system, MICRO-X10, duplicated the function of X10, a complex database query routine used daily by Order Allocation. A prototype version of MICRO-X10 proved too slow to be useful but allowed implementation and maintenance issues to be analysed. In conclusion, the usefulness of the problem-driven approach to expert systems development within production planning and control is demonstrated but restrictions imposed by current expert system software are highlighted in that the abilities of such software to cope with `hard' scheduling constructs and also the slow processing speeds of such software can restrict the current usefulness of expert systems within production planning and control.

This project examines a production station that faces fluctuating demand with seasonal pattern. The cumulative capacity exceeds the cumulative demand in a one year period; however, its weekly capacity is not able to meet the weekly demand during the peak season. In addition, a Kanban system has been employed at the station, and the management is concerned about the appropriateness of the Kanban bin levels as well as the efficiency of the resulting production flow. Having characterized the station as a multiple part type system with mixed low and high volume manufacturing, the lead strategy for long-term capacity planning was applied to fulfill excess demand. In the second stage of the project, the Setup-Enhanced Control-Point Policy was adapted to derive an effective scheduling policy, and ultimately the production control parameters were employed to design a suitable Kanban system. With a proper planning technique and Kanban system developed for the station, it achieved a 30% reduction in overall operation cost by avoiding extra workload during peak demand period, and its performance can be greatly improved with effective and automatic production scheduling, as well as better utilization of manufacturing resources at the station level. McGarrie, Brian. "A framework for the selection and implementation of production planning and control systems for small manufacturing companies." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 1996. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/5566/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study describes the development and application of a framework to aid small manufacturing companies in the selection, improvement and implementation of production planning and control systems. The framework is developed from the existing literature, which indicates an almost total absence of similar frameworks for small manufacturing companies. The literature was categorised in a Supply Chain Management manner to facilitate close relations between companies when undertaking improvements to the production planning and control system. The framework involves an examination of four phases within a company. The first phase, the Current Reality, enables the company under study to undertake an in-depth audit of their existing production planning and control system. The framework provides focus for the small manufacturing company by identifying problems within the existing system. Problem-solving, via education and training, is an integral part of the framework, with phase two facilitating this by organising and planning for change. The third phase of the framework, the implementation provides the company with a choice of pursuing a software solution to the problems identified in the previous phases, or of simpler, incremental improvements in performance. The final phase, the feedback loop to the Current Reality phase enables companies to follow a programme of continuous improvement. A normal change implementation plan lacks the focus that this framework can provide for the selection and implementation of production planning and control systems. The framework has been validated in ten small manufacturing companies in the U.K., and has enabled one company to successfully select and implement a new computerised production planning and control system. The study reports the application of the framework in this company over a three year period. The advantages of using this framework in action research mode are reported. The other nine case studies highlight the ability of the framework to focus on smaller, incremental improvements in production planning and control performance. The empirical research also concludes that a lack of human resources to devote to improvements and implementations, is the main difference between large and small companies when undertaking such exercises. Recommendations for future work on the framework are presented, and the usefulness of the framework for managers in small manufacturing companies, consultants and academic researchers is discussed.

Gomes, Roger. "The influence of just-in-time systems on physical distribution channel performance: an experiment utilizing a dynamic simulation decision support system." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/53696.

Full text
Abstract:
Currently many American industrial firms are considering the adoption of Just-In-Time (JIT) as an inventory control/material flow system. A JIT system can have several configurations. Examples exist of JIT being applied system-wide between all the echelons which make up a channel. There are also examples of firms adopting JIT only on the materials management side, or alternatively, only on the physical distribution side of a particular focal organization (echelon) within a channel. The reality of uncertainty in the channel's operation and environment suggests that alternative inventory systems (such as JIT) must be evaluated under a range of internal operational uncertainty and external demand uncertainty conditions. This study offers a rational methodology to anticipate the performance impact of alternative system designs under realistic operating conditions. The G.P.M. simulation model was used to represent the operation of a channel under sixteen treatment conditions. The research design was full factorial with two levels each of four factors (physical distribution JIT, materials management JIT, materials management operational uncertainty, and demand uncertainty). The response variables which were used as indicators of channel performance included: profitability, order cycle time, standard deviation of order cycle time, and percent customer orders filled. Eleven research hypotheses explored the relationship between JIT configuration and uncertainty, both in terms of profitability and physical distribution service level maintained. The major conclusions of the research are: 1. JIT is not the unidimensional system often depicted in descriptive studies. JIT effects tend to be complex, interactive, and level dependent. It is particularly difficult to predict the effect of JIT on one echelon, or on subsystems within echelons. 2. Rather than the inherent positive effects often attributed to JIT, results indicate negative effects for both profit and service under a range of uncertainty conditions. 3. Results support the common criticism of JIT that its performance is sensitive to uncertainty, particularly demand uncertainty. The performance of non-JIT systems were also shown to have similar sensitivity to uncertainty. 4. Most synergistic interactions between factors were not significant, but the statistical procedure for means comparison was acknowledged to be conservative. 5. Results also indicated that JIT systems may make the job of maintaining high customer service levels more difficult.

Chen, Ming. "Lot Sizing at the Operational Planning and Shop Floor Scheduling Levels of the Decision Hierarchy of Various Production Systems." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29435.

Full text
Abstract:
The research work presented in this dissertation relates to lot sizing and its applications in the areas of operational planning and shop floor scheduling and control. Lot sizing enables a proper loading of requisite number of jobs on the machines in order to optimize the performance of an underlying production system. We address lot sizing problems that are encountered at the order entry level as well as those that are faced at the time of distributing the jobs from one machine to another and those that arise before shipping the jobs (orders) to customers. There are different issues and performance measures involved during each of these scenarios, which make the lot sizing problems encountered in these scenarios different from one another. We present algorithms and relevant theoretical analyses for each of the lot sizing problems considered, and also, present results of numerical experimentation to depict their effectiveness We first study the lot sizing problem encountered while transferring jobs from one machine to another. A lot of the jobs is to be split into smaller lots (called sublots) such that the lot is processed on multiple machines in an overlapping manner, a process which is known in the literature as lot streaming. Two lot streaming problems, FL2/n/C and FLm/1/C, are investigated in Chapter 2. FL2/n/C involves a two-machine flow shop in which multiple lots are to be processed. The objective is to minimize the combined cost of makespan and material handling (the latter is proportional to the number of sublots). A dynamic programming-based methodology is developed to determine the optimal sublot sizes and the number of sublots for each lot while assuming a known sequence in which to process the lots. We designate this problem as LSP-DP. This methodology is, then, extended to determine an optimal sequence in which to process the lots in conjunction with the number of sublots and sublot sizes for each lot. We designate this problem as LSSP-DP. Three multidimensional heuristic search procedures (denoted as LSSP-Greedy, LSSP-Cyclic and LSSP-ZP) are proposed for this problem in order to obtain good-quality solutions in a reasonable amount of computational time. Our experimentation reveals that both lot streaming and lot sequencing generate significant benefits, if used alone. However, for the objective of minimizing total handling and makespan cost, lot streaming is more beneficial than lot sequencing. The combined use of lot streaming and sequencing, expectedly, results in the largest improvement over an initial random solution. LSP-DP is found to be very efficient, and so are the three LSSP heuristics, all of which are able to generate near-optimal solutions. On the average, LSSP-Greedy generates the best solutions among the three, and LSSP-Cyclic requires the least time. FLm/1/C deals with the streaming of a single lot over multiple machines in a flow shop. The objective is a unified cost function that comprises of contributions due to makespan, mean flow time, work-in-process, transfer time and setup time. The distinctive features of our problem pertain to the inclusion of sublot-attached setup time and the fact that idling among the sublots of a lot is permitted. A solution procedure that relies on an approximation equation to determine sublot size is developed for this problem for equal-size sublots. The approximation avoids the need for numerical computations, and enables the procedure to run in polynomial time. Our experimentation shows that this solution procedure performs quite well and frequently generates the optimal solution. Since the objective function involves multiple criteria, we further study the marginal cost ratios of various pairs of the criteria, and propose cost sensitivity indices to help in estimating the impact of marginal cost values on the number of sublots obtained. The lot sizing problem addressed in Chapter 3 is motivated by a real-life setting associated with semiconductor manufacturing. We first investigate the integration of lot sizing (at the operational planning level) and dispatching (at the scheduling and control level) in this environment. Such an integration is achieved by forming a closed-loop control system between lot sizing and dispatching. It works as follows: lot sizing module determines lot sizes (loading quota) for each processing buffer based on the current buffer status via a detailed linear programming model. The loading quotas are then used by the dispatching module as a general guideline for dispatching lots on the shop floor. A dispatching rule called â largest-remaining-quota-firstâ (LRQ) is designed to drive the buffer status to its desired level as prescribed by the lot sizing module. Once the buffer status is changed or a certain amount of time has passed, loading quotas are updated by the lot sizing module. Our experimentation, using the simulation of a real-life wafer fab, reveals that the proposed approach outperforms the existing practice (which is based on â first-in-first-outâ (FIFO) model and an ad-hoc lot sizing method). Significant improvements are obtained in both mean values and standard deviations of the performance metrics, which include finished-goods inventory, backlog, throughput and work-in-process. The integration of lot sizing and dispatching focuses on the design of an overall production system architecture. Another lot sizing problem that we present in Chapter 3 deals with input control (or workload control) that complements this architecture. Input control policies are responsible for feeding the production system with the right amount of work and at the right time, and are usually divided into â pushâ or â pullâ categories. We develop a two-phase input control methodology to improve system throughput and the average cycle time of the lots. In phase 1, appropriate operational lot sizes are determined with regard to weekly demand, so as to keep the lot start rate at the desired level. In phase 2, a â pullâ policy, termed CONLOAD, is applied to keep the bottleneckâ s workload at a target level by releasing new lots into the system whenever the workload level is below the desired level. Since the operators are found to be the bottleneck of the system in our preliminary investigation, the â operator workloadâ is used as system workload in this study. Using throughput and cycle time as the performance metrics, it is shown that this two-phase CONLOAD methodology achieves significant improvement over the existing CONWIP-like policy. Furthermore, a reference table for the target operator workload is established with varying weekly demand and lot start rate. The last lot sizing problem that we address has to do with the integration of production and shipping operations of a make-to-order manufacturer. The objective is to minimize the total cost of shipping and inventory (from manufacturerâ s perspective) as well as the cost of earliness and tardiness of an order (from customerâ s perspective). An integer programming (IP) model is developed that captures the key features of this problem, including production and delivery lead times, multiple distinct capacitated machines and arbitrary processing route, among others. By utilizing the generalized upper bound (GUB) structure of this IP model, we are able to generate a simplified first-level RLT (Reformulation Linearization Technique) relaxation that guarantees the integrity of one set of GUB variables when it is solved as a linear programming (LP) problem. This allows us to obtain a tighter lower bound at a node of a branch-and-bound procedure. The GUB-based RLT relaxation is complemented by a GUB identification procedure to identify the set of GUB variables that, once restricted to integer values, would result in the largest increment in the objective value. The tightening procedure described above leads to the development of a RLT-based branch-and-bound algorithm. Our experimentation shows that this algorithm is able to search the branch-and-bound tree more efficiently, and hence, generates better solutions in a given amount of time.

In this project a personal computer-based Oracle software package was used as a development tool for a material requirements planning (MRP) system for a small company. The main objective was to find the right approach and techniques to use in developing such a system. The system and structured design approaches were followed. The emphasis was on the use of graphic tools for designing. Three diagramming tools were used at the system design stage: decomposition, entity-relationship and data flow diagrams. A relational database approach was used for data organisation. It was necessary to use the normalisation process to design the tables in the database. Test runs of the designed system showed that the MRP system was working and with Oracle as the software platform it was flexible to changes.

Abstract:
In the construction sector, there has been an increase on the use of industrialized building systems, including steel construction systems, due to the contribution of those systems in terms of reducing the duration of projects, and reduction of waste. This change has created opportunities for the application of production management concepts and methods that have been originated in other industries, such as the Lean Production Philosophy, which has brought several benefits for the construction sector, such as waste reduction, increase in productivity and reliability in delivery time. However, there have been only a few research studies on the application of Lean Production concepts on the production planning and control process of companies involved in the delivery of steel construction systems. The aim of this research work is to propose guidelines for the conception and implementation of production planning and control systems for projects delivered by companies that design, manufacture and assemble steel construction systems. Moreover, some adaptations in the Last Planner Systems are proposed for the context of assembling this type of system. Action research was the research strategy adopted in this investigation, which involved the development of five empirical studies in projects carried out by a Brazilian leading company. This investigation started by carrying out an analysis of the material and information flows among the main departments of the company, as well as by assessing the existing planning and control process for site assembly. Then, a set of improvements in that process were devised and implemented in three construction sites of the company. The main results of this research work are concerned with extending the scope of production system design, adapting the medium and short-term planning levels of the Last Planner System to this context, and integrating the planning and control process for site assembly with upstream processes. Moreover, different types of planning and control systems were proposed for different types of projects, according to their complexity and size.

Abstract:
One of the main assumptions in conventional production process is that each component or part of the production process can be controlled separately as if they are not dependent on anything. This assumption gives rise to problems such as need of effective collaboration with different actors and constraints in budgets. Conventional planning process also causes delay as well as cost overruns which ultimately leads to reduction in productivity. The Last Planner system, LPS, is a tool used in the construction sector with the goal of streamlining production. The tool has several advantages, for example, to make collaboration between different actors more efficient, achieve a better workflow and increase production efficiency. The purpose of this masters’ thesis is to explore how two construction projects in Stockholm work with LPS. Apart from the fact that LPS provides many advantages in the production planning of the projects, this study aims to explore the challenges that they face while working with LPS. The goal of this study is to be able to suggest improvement measures for the challenges that the projects are facing.Semi-structured interviews were conducted on both projects to understand how they work with LPS and what challenges they face. The results section contains the information from the interviews. That is then discussed against the theory on which the Last Planner system is built. The conclusion of this study is that the production planning in the projects differs from how the tool should be used according to the framework of LPS. Learning, which emphasizes what has been done during the project, is a phase in LPS's framework. According to one of the founders of the LPS system, ‘learning’ is the most important phase. However, due to the lack of time, the studied projects were not able to involve the learning phase into their production planning. The projects faced several challenges, including repeated changes from the design teams, which entailed new actions during the project. Also, the involvement of the construction workers in the planning phases came out as a big challenge for the managers. Furthermore, communication problems and lack of cooperation with subcontractors is also present. Some of the improvement measures suggested to meet the challenges are that managers should increase commitment to involve especially construction workers in the planning phases, create nucleus teams, create a standard protocol for how production planning should be implemented, and improve visual planning to enhance communication.

This research developed improved methods of inventory and production control in an electronic manufacturing company, which faces fluctuating seasonal demands and is categorized as a multiple part type production system with mixed low and high volume manufacturing. In the first stage of the project, the daily operation in the factory was examined systematically, and it was observed that the factory's original methodologies in demand analysis, capacity planning, material flow control, and production and inventory control were heuristic, and have been introducing confusion and extra uncertainty into the factory. In the second stage of the project, an integrated approach was introduced to the factory. A long-term capacity planning optimization framework was developed for the systematic capacity planning during peak season; ANOVA was applied to identify the demand seasonality; operational changes were made to smooth the material flow in the factory, and a base stock inventory control policy was adopted to improve the inventory and production control at individual stages in the factory. Lastly, a Kanban production control system was developed based on the chosen base stock policy. Using current factory data, the performances of the chosen base stock policy at a single production stage were studied with a simulation model. It was observed that the new inventory control policy could achieve a 17% cost reduction at the studied stage, and even bigger cost reduction for the whole production line.

Abstract:
An increase in global competitiveness has forced manufacturing organisations to re – look at their facility from an output and quality standpoint. Leveraging a manufacturing operation into a competitive advantage must at all times support the organisation’s objectives. It is therefore vital that the operation reviews its strategy so that it fulfils the everchanging needs of its market. The main objective of this research was to identify possible approaches that Johnson Controls South Africa (JCI SA) could pursue when implementing a Lean Manufacturing model. In doing this it will improve JCI SA’s manufacturing efficiency and quality, thus giving the organisation a competitive edge over its opposition. The research presented an empirical study of how a Lean Manufacturing model should be implemented in JCI SA. A theoretical and empirical study was conducted on how to successfully implement Lean Manufacturing within an organisation. The main purpose was to establish a theoretical Lean Manufacturing model that the organisation can utilise as a strategic plan to become the global leader in its market place.

The project work presented in this thesis has proposed solutions related to the control of production and work-in-process inventory in a multi-item multi-stage manufacturing system. A suitable base-stock inventory control policy is recommended to ensure that the desired service levels are maintained between production stages and for the final customers. Concept of coupling the production lines though coupling-stock under suitable assumptions is then introduced to reduce the stock levels at certain consecutive production stages. A framework for demand seasonality and characteristic analysis is also established to enable the inventory control policy to respond to seasonal variations. Monte Carlo simulation was performed on a model of chain of production stages controlled under base-stock policy for the verification of results and to study the effects of stock-outs on base-stock levels. The results of simulation study showed that overall system performance is satisfactory and desired service levels were achieved. Simulation work was also carried out to validate the line coupling concept and its performance under certain conditions. A novel Kanban based visual management system design, which is aligned with the requirements of inventory control policy, along with the material transfer batch sizes between production stages is proposed to facilitate the implementation of inventory control policy. Furthermore, capacitated shipment planning approach is proposed and implemented in form of a spreadsheet-based interface to aid planning personnel in shipment planning under the constraints provided by the inventory control policy.

In spite of the growth in the sugar exports, the current situation of the sector responsible for the production of sugar and alcohol, as well as the instability of the external market, responsible for the fact that sugar and alcohol mills are looking for an increase competitiveness. The Information Technology (IT) has a great degree of participation in this search for competitiveness, because it is impossible for a company to introduce an effective integrated management network without the utilization of computerized systems. Some of these systems, called Enterprise Resources Planning, have developed remarkably in the last years, reaching, for instance, the point of having their own specific modules for certain industry types. One of the developers of these systems developed specific modules for the production planning and control in industries of continuous process. The concepts involved in such modules are introduced in this dissertation, and compared with the traditional modules of production planning and control. Basic concepts are introduced at first, then the industrial processes of a plant are explained, and the modeling of such company is presented for the analysis of the compatibility of the modules to the productive process of the plant.

Abstract:

Today many companies face problems with inventory management. The importance of adequate inventory management has become more evident, while organizations try to reduce their costs and increase their service level.

This master thesis was conducted at VSM Group AB in Huskvarna, which is a manufacturer that produces and delivers sewing machines to a worldwide market. VSM Group AB has problems with the management and the refilling of the work-in-process (WIP) inventories and also with lack of information about component balance and location in the production and material planning system.

Therefore, the purpose of the thesis was to improve the control of the WIP inventories and the information about the components in the production and material planning system. In order to achieve the purpose, interviews and observations were performed, theories in inventory management were reviewed and the production process was studied.

Afterwards solutions for improvements were proposed. To solve the management and refilling problem, a kanban ordering system was proposed, which would use kanban cards to order components from the storages to the WIP inventories. To develop the component information displayed in the production and material planning system, an additional feature was proposed to the system. So instead of showing one inventory balance for each component, the system would display balances for three different places in the factory: the goods arrival and quality control area, the storage and the production.

The proposed solutions can provide several benefits to the company. The kanban ordering system can increase the material handlers’ efficiency, set a standard refilling quantity and be a tool for reducing the WIP inventory levels. The more detailed information in the production and material planning system can improve the decision making for the purchasers and planners and give the ability to measure the flow and level of material inside the factory.

These solutions will provide a more appropriate inventory management to the company, with better control of the components and improved information quality.

The CONWIP production management method overcomes in productive systems because it eliminates waste and enhances the productive process’ performance. Maketo- stock production systems need to reduce stocks in order to enhance the performance of their productive processes. However, the application of CONWIP is sparse in MTS systems industrial reality. Hence a research has been done, through computational simulations and modelling methodology, with the aim to compare the operational results of a real productive MTS system with the results that a CONWIP method managed system would generate. The CONWIP hás held the demand by reducing the excess production presented by MTS, using 71% less inputs and reducing the processing stocks (WIP) by 85%. Considering the Factory Physics laws, the CONWIP performance was better when compared to MTS for enhancing the resources usage, reducing the processing time variability and eliminating the waste. This work hás contributed to reduce CONWIP performance analysis through computational simulation and modelling studies absence in literature.

Abstract:
In a global market, the trend for geographical dispersion of manufacturing plants has been observed. This dispersion is motivated by the opportunity to exploit local advantages under dierent viewpoints. This structure also allows for more intense interaction between plants of dierent productive enterprises. In this sense, the concept of Virtual Enterprise (VE) is fundamental to explore new business strategies such asfocus on core competencies, maximal customer orientationanddistributed production. However, in this new productive structure, there are new requirements for planning and for establishing the delivery date of the orders. A conventional Production Planning and Control system (PPC) uses a hierarchical architecture, which does not meet the requirement of autonomy of the partners companies. To address these new requirements, this work introduces a Production Planning and Control System Architecture in EV context. In the proposal are used the concepts oftime windowsandconstraint propagationto meet the deadline requirements of product delivery. These two concepts have been widely used in the literature relating to conventional planning systems, however, not in the EV context. In this approach, thetime windowsdelimit the allocation range of tasks in production systems involved, while the capacity constraint identify the feasible time window considering the importance of the ordes due date. An example of using the architecture and an implementation is presented. This work includes EVs with partner companies of various types of production (production batch and discrete manufacturing). Production Flow Schema (PFS) is used for modeling the processes according to a hierarchical approach based on successive renements to construct progressive and structured model where the properties of model are ensured by construction. This renement generates sub-graphs in Petri Net, which are used for the analysis and control of the production process.

In recent years, several construction companies have attempted to improve their production planning and control systems in order to improve project performance in terms of time and costs, besides increasing quality and productivity. An important reference in the development of production planning and control systems in this sector has been the introduction of the Last Planner System, conceived from models and theories developed in industrial engineering, since the mid Nineties. This system has been refined in several research studies around the world, most of them based on a qualitative data analysis. In fact, the research studies concerned with production planning and control carried out at the Postgraduate Program in Civil Engineering at UFRGS is recent years have been strongly based on the Last Planner System. The main objective of this dissertation is to make contributions for data collection and analysis for assessing the impact of production planning and control systems in the performance of construction projects, as well as identify some implementation difficulties. A database was built with some measures collected in construction projects in previous research studies, as well as with data from a performance measurement system for benchmarking in this sector. Several analyses were carried out in this data base, mostly based on two measures, the percentage of plan completed (PPC) and the causes for the non completion of work packages, using multivariate regression analysis. Among the main conclusions, this study pointed out ways of improving data collection, including the use of pro-active mechanisms for avoiding the growth of missing values and outliers. Furthermore, it suggests the construction of a single database in each company, enabling the proper use of the data available, since some of the measures are collected but are further discarded without an in-depth analysis. Regarding the difficulties in the implementation of production planning and control, some failures during the analysis of the causes for the non-completion of work packages in short term planning and the incomplete implementation of look-ahead planning, due to the ineffectiveness of constraints analysis, were pointed out.

Abstract:
Since the Last Planner™ System (LPS) was devised in the early Nineties, several studies have pointed out the need to understand the underlying theory in which it is based on. The Language‐Action Perspective (LAP) has been suggested as a suitable approach to understand the management of commitments in the LPS. However, there is a lack of empirical studies that have investigated the utility of LAP as a theoretical approach for explaining the LPS. This study aims to investigate the benefits and the limitations of the Language‐Action Perspective for evaluating the effectiveness of planning and control systems, emphasizing medium and short term planning. Two case studies were carried out in different construction companies, both of them highly experienced on the use of LPS. Interviews with the people involved in planning meetings, direct observation of the construction sites, participation in planning meetings, and documents analysis were the main sources of evidence. In each company, the production planning and control system of one project was assessed, based on the mapping of the network of commitments regarding the medium and short term planning levels. Besides, an in‐depth analysis of planning meetings was made, describing how they were carried out, who effectively participated in decision‐making, and how the commitments were managed. In both studies, it was possible to track how the commitments were initiated, and in some cases to analyse the integrity of the workflow loops in the network of commitments, and the consequences of the failures for the planning and control system. A cross‐case analysis was carried out, in order to compare the managerial approaches of the two companies. The results pointed out some problems in the planning and control processes that can be better understood through the mapping of the network of commitments. Moreover, the study indicated some limitations of the method proposed in the literature for analysing people’s speech. For that reason, this study devised a method to perform a detailed analysis of planning meetings, in order to overcome those limitations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The activities of designing and planning production systems in construction tend to be more complex than in manufacturing due to the fact that the product (building) is stationary, while the transforming resources move around. Moreover, as the project is being built, the site layout changes over time, contributing to increase the complexity of those activities. This research work proposes the use of 4D models for spatial and temporal visualization of construction projects, by introducing BIM (Building Information Modeling) in the design and planning of production systems. In general, previous studies on the use of BIM for 4D modeling in construction have focused on isolated planning decisions, limited to specific construction processes. However, not much research has been made on the implementation of BIM 4D models in the design and planning of production systems in the organizational context of construction companies. Therefore, the aim of this research study is to devise a method for designing and planning production systems in construction projects, with the use of BIM 4D modeling. This research fits into the mode of knowledge production named constructive research which consists of producing innovative constructions, intended to solve problems found in the real world, as well as to contribute to theoretical developments in the theme being investigated. The study was divided into four stages: literature review, exploratory phase, development phase, and consolidation phase. The main contributions of the investigation are the proposed method, a discussion on the possible roles of BIM 4D in the decision making process involved in the design and planning of production systems, and the identification of the main difficulties in terms of implementation.

Abstract:
In recent years, there have been several research efforts on how to improve the management of construction supply chains. The management of those supply chains and the integration among participants can potentially reduce individual risks and improve the efficiency of the production process as a whole, eliminating waste and unnecessary efforts. Achieving excellence in the management of construction supply chains represents a way of increasing competitive advantage in the market. However, the construction sector has moved slowly towards the application of Supply Chain Management (SCM), partly due to the peculiarities of this industrial context. In many construction projects, there is a lack of integration of the construction company and its suppliers. Previous research indicates that the Last Planner System can play a key role in the integration of construction companies and their suppliers in the management of construction projects. This research proposes that this should be achieved by involving some strategic suppliers in the implementation of the lean principles and techniques that are encrypted in the Last Planner system. This research study aims to devise a set of guidelines to integrate supply chain management functions through the production planning and control system as well as using it for understanding the main problems related to the lack of integration of construction supply chains. This strategy incorporates the application of a conceptual framework for SCM for inter-firm integration and management, and the application of a production planning and control model that is based on the Last Planner System for production control. Three case studies were carried out in construction projects aiming to explore mechanisms to support integration efforts, and propose criteria for assessing the level of integration between supply chain members. This research work suggests procedures to identify strategic project supply chain members, manage them using the Last Planner System, and assess their degree of integration by using a set of practices related to the production management system of the construction company.

Abstract: The long term hydrothermal scheduling of the Brazilian Integrated System (SIN) is a complex task solved by a chain of long, medium and short term coupled models, each one with considerations pertinent to the stage of operation that it deals with. The proposal of this work is to present an alternative for the long term hydrothermal scheduling. A methodology based on model predictive control was developed, implicitly handling stochastic aspects of the problem by the use of inflows expected values, and making use of a deterministic optimization model to obtain the optimal dispatch for individualized plants, what makes possible a more accurate representation of the hydrothermal system. The performance analysis is made through simulations of the operation, taking into consideration all the hydro and thermal plants that compose the SIN, with real operative constraints, in dynamic configuration, with its expansion plan and the possibility of interchange and importation from neighboring markets. The results are compared with those provided by the approach actually in use by the Brazilian electric sector, specifically the NEWAVE model, which defines the generation decisions for the subsystems, and the Suishi-O model, that disaggregates them for the individualized plants

This study addresses the importance of the planning process for tourism systems respecting your organization systemic and complex logic. Therefore, relied on three major concepts: A Systems Theory / Complexity Theory, Operations Management and Tourism Planning. Through theoretical discussions, we sought to show that tourism is a complex system and therefore its development needs to be planned. As an alternative to both, we constructed a frame of reference based on six models of pre-existing tourism planning and objectives of Planning, Programming and Production Control (PPPC). The frame of reference proposed contextualizes the goals of PPPCs in the environment of tourism, showing that it is possible to extend the activities of the operations management environments more complex, taking into account new challenges to Production Engineering.
