Abstract:
This chapter presents a series of exhibition and curatorial projects situated in the discipline of interior design that experimented with questions of interior and interiority, subject and object relations, spatial and temporal conditions. Deleuze’s critique of interior and interiority as isolated, pre-existing entities provokes a thinking and doing otherwise where space and subjectivity, interior and exterior are unquestioned givens. Thinking through practising with Deleuze, the technique of framing is re-posed as a technique of interiorization where interior and interiority are productions in exteriority; the frame as a fold of an outside that involves processes of selection and arrangement. Deleuze’s book Foucault and the ‘Outside-interior’ and Elizabeth Grosz’s Chaos, Territory, Art. Deleuze and the Framing of the Earth are key references. The chapter poses ‘?interior’ – with reference to Deleuze’s ?-being – as a problematic to be addressed through designing interior – each time anew.

Donnelly, Catherine, ed. The Oxford Companion to Cheese. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acref/9780199330881.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Over 850 entriesThe Oxford Companion to Cheese is the first truly comprehensive reference work dedicated to the exploration of how four basic ingredients—milk, microorganisms, salt, and enzymes—are transformed into the more than fourteen hundred named cheese varieties enjoyed throughout the world. From cottage cheese to Camembert, from Gorgonzola to Gruyère, the Companion examines cheese on the farm, under the microscope, in the shop, and on the plate.More than just a pizza topping or cracker spread, cheese has been the founding capital of a few European banking systems, a religious sacrament, and an inspiration for writers and artists as far back as Homer. The Companion reveals these hidden depths in more than 850 wide-ranging entries. Here you will read about rightly famous cheeses, but also some that are not well known outside of their area of production, such as the traditional Turkish and Iranian cheeses ripened in sheep's or goat's skin. You will learn about animal species whose milk is commonly used (cow, goat, and sheep) and not so commonly used (yak, camel, and reindeer) in cheesemaking, as well as a few highly important breeds within each species (the Nubian goat or Lacaune sheep). You will explore regional cheesemaking traditions that date back millennia, and both ancient and modern cheesemaking technology and equipment. And you will delve into the vibrant interior world of cheese: the blooms, veins, sticky surfaces, gooey interiors, crystals, and yes, for some, the strong olfactory notes, are all due to microbial action and growth. To discuss cheese in its countless forms and contexts, the Companion enlisted 325 authors, including leading cheesemakers, mongers, dairy scientists, microbiologists, anthropologists, historians, journalists, archaeologists, and more, from backgrounds as diverse as cheese itself. This is the definitive guide to one of humankind's greatest discoveries.

Lucey, Conor. Building reputations. Manchester University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.7228/manchester/9781526119940.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book advances an innovative look at a well known, if arguably often misunderstood, historic building typology: the eighteenth-century brick terraced (or row) house. Created for the upper tier of the social spectrum, these houses were largely designed and built by what is customarily regarded as the lower tier of the architectural hierarchy; that is, by artisan communities of bricklayers, carpenters, plasterers and related tradesmen. From London and Dublin to Boston and Philadelphia, these houses collectively formed the streets and squares that became the links and pivots of ‘enlightened’ city plans, and remain central to their respective historic and cultural identities. But while the scenographic quality of Bath and the stuccoed interiors of Dublin have long enjoyed critical approbation, the ‘typical’ house is understood less in terms of design and more in terms of production: consequently, historians have emphasized the commercial motivations of this artisan class at the expense of how they satisfied the demands of an elite, and taste-conscious, real estate market. Drawing on extensive primary source material, from property deeds and architectural drawings to trade cards and newspaper advertising, this book rehabilitates the status of the house builder by examining his negotiation of both the manual and intellectual dimensions of the building process. For the first time, Building Reputations considers the artisan as both a figure of building production and an agent of architectural taste.

Crawford, Margo Natalie. Black Inside/Out. University of Illinois Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252041006.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
The sixth chapter examines the role of inner and outer space in cultural productions of black post-blackness. Crawford develops a theory of black public interiority (a theory of black cultural movements’ ability to create a sense of shared interiority within the public space of the collective). She argues that the Black Arts Movement was aspiring for public art that could be experienced as both a black interior and an open space created by a collective. This chapter analyzes a range of installation art and other visual art, film, and letter writing that dramatize the black interior being experienced as the black outdoors. Crawford demonstrates that the BAM set in motion a vital process (that black aesthetics continue to engage) of refusing to allow black interiority to be defined as the province of the black bourgeoisie. The art examined includes installation art created by Kara Walker, outdoor murals, the film Night Catches Us, the letter writing of Carolyn Rodgers and Hoyt Fuller, and more.

Abstract:
Foreword Engineering plastics, fiber-reinforced composites and multifunctional plastic composites provide ongoing support to the modern automotive industry today. In many cases multi-functional tools and automated processes make particularly economic system solutions possible. Additive manufacturing in combination with plastics already has a great potential today for producing individual, tailor-made component concepts, above all for small production runs. Lightweight construction, an attractive look and feel for the interior, and active and passive safety stand right at the forefront of new automotive developments today. Innovations in plastics technology have a direct influence on tomorrow’s vehicle concepts. Mixed construction with plastic composites, natural fiber applications, overmolded and inmold film laminated parts, LED- and OLED-based lighting technologies, and also optically and haptically optimized display and operating concepts make tailored system solutions possible...

Abstract:
Chapter 8 uses the multifaceted term “tones” to explain the expressive role of texts that were produced as part of a growing publication industry to record and circulate various sermons in prose and verse that reflected a master’s awakened state of mind beyond logical thinking. This section also explains the importance of nuanced ink tones for the creation of sparse, monochromatic calligraphy and painting that reveals the interior depths of enlightened engagement with all forms of human and natural existence. Advances in literary and visual arts greatly contributed to the success of maritime transitions and transfers. Salons located within and outside of temple compounds propagated the production of writings and drawings, and contributed to the formation of the tradition that at once affirmed and negated the importance of artistic pursuit in relation to the religious goal of attaining spiritual awakening.

Stevenson, Jane. Baroque between the Wars. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198808770.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book re-examines the arts in the 1920s and 1930s, arguing that rather than being dominated by modernism, the period saw a dialogue between modern baroque—eclectic, playful, and open to influence from popular culture—and modernism, which was theory-driven, didactic, and exclusive, features which suggest that it was essentially a neoclassical movement. Thus the period is characterized by the ancient competition between baroque and classical forms of expression. The author argues that both forms were equally valid responses to the challenge of modernity by setting painting and literature in the context of ‘minor arts’ such as interior design, photography, fashion, ballet, and flower arranging, and by highlighting the social context and sexual politics of creative production. The chapters of the book pursue a set of interconnected themes, focused by turns on artists, artefacts, clients, places, and publicists, in order to test and explore the central idea.

Full text
Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of Communist Visual Cultures critically examines and historically reconstructs the visual practices that have accompanied social transformations initiated by communist ideals in various parts of the world in the twentieth century. Bringing together diverse and broadly understood visual texts, including architecture, interior design, cartoons, computer games, fashion, photography, film and television, this volume explores how communism engages the visual. It is divided into five themed sections, focusing, respectively, on materiality; institutional factors and theoretical discourses; international and intercultural dimensions; visual production and strategic spectacles; and after-images, memory, and legacy of communist visual cultures. Thirty-two chapters written by an international team of scholars from their unique disciplinary perspectives investigate the ways in which communism uses visual aesthetics to articulate its value system and to implement its improvement project. The contributors ask how communist visual culture defines itself as a culture of specific media, specific forms, and specific practices. Supported by archival research and historical analysis, this volume is a call to examine the communist visual culture in a range of media and theoretical dimensions, toward a shared goal of reimagining it beyond the existing ways of thinking about it as a defunct project.
