Abstract:
Car service centres are specific in terms of production of pollutants. The aim of the paper is to assess the quality of indoor environment of car service interiors with respect to the safe range of oxocarbon emission limits, concentration of gaseous and solid aerosols of selected chemical pollutants and occupational noise exposure. Measurements of concentration and exposure time indicated that the permitted limits were kept. CO concentration reached values in the range from 0 to 10 ppm, CO2 concentration was observed in the range from 493 to 967 ppm. Concentration of solid aerosol of polyester bitumen reached the maximum value of 0.37 mg/m3, while for gaseous aerosol (e.g. toluene) it equalled 8.114 mg/m3. Measurements of chemical factors were carried out and evaluated by companies with appropriate accreditation. Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) were higher in case of all selected substances. OEL was not demonstrably exceeded at any chemical factor. Noise emissions approached the limit values; therefore, hearing protection is required.

Abstract:
Museum dioramas are widely recognised as historic visual tropes used to frame the grandeur of the outside world within an interior viewing space. With the development of digital technologies, data projection and soundscape have increasingly replaced diorama production as a means to transform these once static-animal-posed-in-painted- habitat with immersive interiors that engage the visual and aural senses alike. Andre Breton proposes that two modes of consciousness exist: an exterior world of facts and an interior world of emotions. These interiors and exteriors produce an interface and exchange. An invitation to respond to the interior of RMIT University’s First Site gallery provided an opportunity to experiment with the three traditional dioramic elements used to bring the exterior world into an interior employing taxidermy, model making and set painting. By engaging digital technologies in response to these three elements, I developed a sensorial interior, where the exterior world of facts was set into dialogue with the interior world of emotion. A physical encounter that expanded on ‘interior’ as an experiential, relational, phenomenal and emotive space.

Abstract:
A shift toward the post-modern in the humanities has fostered novel discourses on spatial phenomena including the production of space, the spatialization of society and culture, and the becoming of interiors. A recent debate on the unbecoming of interior had both puzzled me and encouraged me to explore further and to reinterpret emerging ideas in the interior design academic community. These new developments generate opportunities for investigating spatial phenomena in unconventional and novel ways, construing them as products of changing social practices rather than technical action or artistic serendipity. The problem of this study is the unbecoming of interior as a result of the new sociocultural realities. These realities have led to the unbecoming of the conventional building and in effect, the unbecoming of the interior the way society construes it today. The methodology utilizes a Symbolic Interactionist perspective and a case study approach. The paper interprets the becoming and unbecoming of interior as a dialectical processes of developing and changing relationships between types of spatialities and human agency with respect to particular sociocultural context. The findings highlight how the concerns with social indeterminacy and unpredictability translate into a requirement for building flexibility and then into the unbecoming of conventional spatial paradigms and the interior the way we know it today. These ideas spur questions about the nature and purpose of buildings and interiors, the relationships between them, and the role of impending cultures in the production of new kinds of spatialities.

Abstract:
Two thermodynamic principles offer considerable insight into the climatic and geological settings for life on other planets, namely (1) that natural systems tend to actually achieve the ideal (‘Carnot’) limit of conversion of heat into work and (2) if a fluid system such as an atmosphere has sufficient degrees of freedom, it will choose the degree of heat transport that maximizes the generation of work (equivalently, that which offers maximum entropy production). The first principle agrees well with results on terrestrial cumulus convection, and the mechanical energy released by tectonic activity. The second principle agrees with the observed zonal climates of Earth, Mars and Titan, and shows promise for planetary interiors too; I discuss applications in the investigation of paleoclimates and habitability. I compare the work performed by planetary atmospheres and interiors on the terrestrial planets and thereby predict a weakly eroded landscape on Titan. The association of life with the production of entropy is also noted, and the possibility of evaluating planetary entropy production by telescopic observation is discussed.

Abstract:
Research Highlights: Soil carbon storage (SOC) decreased due to forest fragmentation through lower proportion of macroaggregate distribution, higher storage of fine roots and litter falls, and lower fine root production rate. Background and Objectives: Globally, forest fragmentation processes lead to enormous losses of SOC in forests. We investigated SOC and its determinants in forest fragments experiencing edge disturbances in south China. Materials and Methods: Soil aggregate characteristics, dynamics of fine roots, and litter fall were studied from forest edges to interiors. Generalized linear mixed models were used to model the contributions of fine root and litter fall dynamics to carbon concentration in aggregates. Results: Large and small macroaggregates had higher proportion of aggregate distribution and contributed more carbon to SOC in all types of plots in the present study. SOC significantly increased from forest edges to interiors due to carbon concentration of these two aggregate types increasing from edges to interiors, while the proportion of different aggregate distributions was similar within each plot. The same trend was found with increasing forest patch size. Fine root biomass storage had the strongest impact on carbon concentration in large macroaggregates and microaggregates, with higher fine root biomass storage associated with lower carbon concentration. In addition, biomass storage and production rates of both fine roots and litter falls decreased from forest interiors to edges. Our results showed that SOC was significantly decreased due to the lower proportion of large and small macroaggregate distribution, and lower fine root production rate in forest fragments. Conclusions: SOC loss due to effects of forest fragmentation and forest edges occurred through decreased concentrations of soil aggregates and fine root production rates. Results from this study will enhance our ability to evaluate soil aggregate, fine root, and leaf litter fall contributions to SOC within forest fragments, and to suggest basic recommendations for the management and conservation of these forest fragments.

Abstract:
This paper examines the interior as a condition that is continuously in production through the arrangement of objects and furniture. This is done along two lines of inquiry. First by examining a few different historical and contemporary conceptions of the domestic interior through the lens of architectural representation. Second by using the technique of laser scanning to document a number of inhabited interiors in two apartment buildings. Through a series of representations, or cloud drawings, produced from the scans, the paper presents three ways of reading the interior: as environments, as assemblies, and as materialities. Departing from Robin Evans’ writing on drawing techniques for representing the interior and their correlation to ways of inhabitation, the paper poses questions around how the understanding of the interior may shift when using emerging techniques for architectural representation. Through readings of Walter Benjamin as well as Sylvia Lavin, the paper discusses such shifts in relation to changes in the conception of the interior and the objects that it contains.

Engaging Space focuses on arranging as means to engage with space. The adaptive arrangements and spatial negotiations of street vendors provide the stimulus for my inquiry. Noticing the various ways vendors constantly engage spatially has led me to observe the ways spatial practices are adapted to suit various requirements. What might I learn, as an interior practitioner, from the spatial practices of street vendors? How might this be applied to an interior practice, to inform an understanding of adaptive methods to engage with space? Undertaking a practice of vendoring, the projects then become engaging spaces - exploring a practice of arranging to produce interiors.

This research presents an approach to the fact that the hinterland is a cultural phenomenon that promotes the landscape, giving the Brazil-interior settings. With a view to assessing content endlessly reissued, the handling of stories about the backcountry led an exercise in theoretical and conceptual experimentation. Taking as study material from cuttings of literary exponents as Hugo de Carvalho Ramos, Bernardo Elis, João Acciole, Léo Godoy Otero, Eli Brasiliense, Mário Rizério Leite, Affonso Arinos and Carmo Bernardes, as well as the pictorial work of Issac Alarcão, the travelogue of Augusta de Faro Fleury Curado, and iconographic, cartographic and/or historiographical material about markers on the backwoods as the troops, the car steers, the cattle, the ranch and their own swing, what happened was an opportunity for review of the place and time temporalized spatialized in discursive productions. To expose the composition of the place were covered projections of a fluctuating space and unfinished. To be noticed and be a prospective way, the hinterland is assessed in this study provide the thematic nature (and often dramatic) the achievements of the discursive landscape hinterland. It was necessary to exercise a juxtaposition of content that mediate permeate the place, which unfolds according to the descriptive labels that strengthen the region invented by very different perspectives narratives. More narrowly, it longed to be interpreted as a manifestation of the interior landscape imagined place, multi-experiencied, interactive and pregnant women, which is always becoming.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The present work intends to think, question and act on the rurality of the Algarve’s countryside, more accurately on the village of Talurdo, in the municipality of Silves. It’s done, in this sense, an extensive analysis of the Algarve’s region involving his geographic, demographic, economic and architectonic characteristics. We approach the region that, until the proclamation of the republic, was considered as the second kingdom of the Portuguese crown (King of Portugal and Algarve’s). This region rely on a vast sand area, possessing extensive beaches and a mild climate, which has promoted an appropriation of the coast on the part of the fishing, canning and hotel activities. Nowadays the region of Algarve works as a touristic stop for the rest of the country, seizing specially the coast area, raising little awareness about the cultural reality and most genuine traditions. The Algarve’s Countryside was left to oblivion and abandonment, without investment in the improvement of infrastructures and in the quality of life of the population, much smaller in comparison with the seaside (they had no access to basic sanitation, electricity…). Silves is the second biggest municipality of the Algarve, accomodating the coastline (Pêra e Armação de pêra) the “barrocal” area (Alcantarilha, Algoz, Silves e Tunes), and the mountains (S. Bartolomeu de Messines e S. Marcos da Serra). Silves is a historical city that developed around it’s strategic geographic location. It’s placed on the limit between “barrocal” and the mountains, on the top of a hill with sight to the sea and all the Arade’s riverbed (formerly navigable). The city was occupied by Romans, Visigoths and Muslims, responsible for it’s development and fortification. The village of Talurdo it’s located in the municipality of Silves, in the road that connects Silves to S. Marcos da Serra and crosses the mountainous area of Silves (municipal 502). This track is characterized by twists and turns, ascents and descents that offer panoramic views of the Algarve’s Interior.

Abstract:
This thesis project is an exploration of process in both design and winemaking. Wine has long been a part of Virginia’s history and culture and in recent years has influenced architecture and design that is specific to winemaking and hospitality. Through an interior intervention, this project addresses the many challenges of marrying production and hospitality design criteria under one roof. The final design encourages understanding of process through links between production and consumption with both a winemaking facility and laboratory that are integrated into the surrounding hospitality-oriented spaces. This visual exposure to the facility stimulates patron interest and intuitive knowledge of the intricate nature of the winemaking process. The concept of process is revealed through the use of materials and their application, designed in such a way to encourage patrons to explore how they are constructed. The use of natural materials that patina are used to celebrate the aging process that is inextricably linked to both design and wine. In addition, new ways of using materials that are part of the winemaking process are employed to expose patrons to nuanced aspects of the process that otherwise remain hidden.

Jones, Robin Douglas. "The empire of things : furniture of nineteenth century Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and the production of British culture." Thesis, Southampton Solent University, 2001. http://ssudl.solent.ac.uk/689/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes and interprets furniture produced in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) between c. 1800 and 1900 as part of a cultural 'dialogue' of everyday objects between Europe and Asia. By synthesizing the research methods of furniture history and material culture, the present work examines Ceylonese furniture within the context of the society in which it was produced and used. For the first time, the range of furniture produced on the island during the nineteenth century is categorized and defining characteristics of such furniture are outlined. In addition, and again for the first time, consumption of furniture in Ceylon during this period is examined and the place of these artefacts within the production of Western cultural practices is explained. Specifically, this thesis also contributes to an understanding of the history of Ceylon by interpreting the acquisition and use of western-style furniture by the indigenous social elite as part of the production of anglicized life-styles on the island. The present work contributes to debates centred on colonialism and culture by historicizing and localizing the furniture of the island. Such furniture, it is argued, in addition to its use value, reproduced European refinement and civility in the domestic interiors of Ceylon; in this way furniture, despite its quotidian nature, is taken to be expressive and constitutive of the colonial relationship between the British and Ceylonese. Through analysis of archival data, examination of the furniture itself and interpretation of the communicative capacities of these artefacts, explanation of the empirical and symbolic is combined in a new understanding of a substantial, but overlooked, part of the object-world of nineteenth century Ceylon. Through the process of developing and using a new conceptual framework for the interpretation of colonial furniture produced in Asia, a contribution is made to the study of furniture history and, more specifically, items of furniture from Ceylon are interpreted as materializations of human behaviour and constitutive elements in the production of culture.

Full text
Abstract:
The research is divided into three sections. The first one is called, The Right to Happiness as a Constitutional Right. The second one is entitled The Limits of Gross Domestic Product. Finally, the third one is related to Happiness Indices. The main objectives of this research are also three, and they correspond to each one of the sections. First, to determine whether there is or there has been throughout history, what might be called as a right to happiness, and if that right has been recognized in the Constitutions of some nation. Second, to verify if the Gross Domestic Product, which has become since its creation in the main indicator of the level of development and material welfare of a country, has its limitations and shortcomings, and if it is the best option to measure progress and welfare of our societies. Also, to find out if any international organization and/or commission, have pronounced about it with resolutions or recommendations, in order to study them. Third, and finally, to determine if new rates and additional indicators of Gross Domestic Product are needed and whether have been created what we call as "indices of happiness" from an international perspective, especially by relevant international organizations, in order to analyze them, with the Gross National Happiness of Bhutan, a pioneering nationwide. We have used as main methodology, the content analysis of these constitutional provisions, and of these recommendations and resolutions by international organizations; and the comparative analysis of the results that have been obtained with the happiness indices analyzed. All this has meant, taking into account the complexity of this investigation and its objectives, the implementation of a qualitative methodology with a comprehensive study of the policy framework, and a bibliographic and theoretical analysis, during the first and second part of this research. In the third part of the investigation has been carried out a descriptive and comparative analysis of the results obtained in the different happiness indices studied. In the first section, The Right to Happiness as a Constitutional Right, we reviewed the Constitutions and certain statements, which have recognized the right to happiness, or at least the right to the pursuit of happiness. In the second section, The Limits of Gross Domestic Product, we confirm that there is a current and international movement, that criticizes the use of Gross Domestic Product as the only one measure of progress and development of countries, such as have been indicated by the relevant Commission on the Measurement of Economic Performance and Social Progress; the Global Project on Measuring the Progress of Societies, of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD); the Resolution in 2011 of the European Parliament entitled Beyond GDP - Measuring progress in a changing world; and the Resolution 65/309 of the United Nations General Assembly the same year, called Happiness: towards a holistic approach to development. All of them believe in the need to introduce new indexes and indicators to complement Gross Domestic Product as a measure of development and welfare of nations, and that happiness should play an important role. Finally, in the third section, we analyze the three indices of happiness at international level that we consider most relevant today. These are the Human Development Index of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the World Happiness Report of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network United Nations (SDSN) and the Better Life Index of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Also, we proceed to analyze a happiness nationwide index, the Gross National Happiness of Bhutan. Regarding the main conclusions, we can say that, despite of the fact that they are two very different concepts, we can find a relationship between Law and Happiness. In fact, the right to happiness, to subjective well-being or at least the right to pursuit of the happiness, has been throughout the ages, and still is in some States, a right recognized in the Constitutions of different countries, although it is true that they are a minority. On the other hand, there are several factors that show us that we need to rethink about current measurement instruments of development and progress, especially the Gross Domestic Product, which cannot be used as the only one measure in order to determine the well-being of a nation. Therefore, the measurement of welfare should be complemented by different studies and indexes related to happiness as a new holistic approach to development. Also, in a public level and in relation to the first conclusion, if happiness is the last goal of any government, happiness indices should help the rulers of nations in order to direct their policies towards the happiness, if what they want is that their citizens were as happy as possible. Finally, we have reached different conclusions related to the results of the indices of happiness analyzed.

Ingeniero Civil Industrial

The question of the inhabitation of cities is becoming one of the key issues of the 21st century as the number of people living in cities exceeds those in rural areas for the first time in history. This chapter addresses the conjunction of urban and interior in relation to the potential of interior design as a discipline that is no longer adequately defined by an architectural context but rather as a practice that is relational and attends to the relationships between people and environments. Emerging trajectories of interior design practice will be presented with the aim of positioning the criticality of contemporary interior design practice as a laboratory for the production of new urban interiors and interiorities.

In Turkey starting from 80s, especially in metropolises like Istanbul the increase of urban density, the decrease of urban inland and the change of social and cultural structure brought with it the need for housing design and production with different priorities. In this context, crowded families had to be replaced from self-built houses to presented mass housing units. Interior spaces of such mass housing that are designed and produced with the intention of standardization, failed to meet the needs of crowded family types. The aim of this work is to discuss the role of interior design in creating design solutions that can increase the flexibility of interiors according to the changing needs of different families with different cultural backgrounds.

Abstract:
Abstract As a smart material thermal shape memory alloys (SMAs) feature actuator behavior combined with self-sensing capabilities. With their high energy density and design flexibility they are predestined to be used in soft robotics and the emerging field of morphing surfaces. Such shape changing surfaces can be used for novel human-machine interaction (HMI) elements based on mode-/situation-dependent interfaces that may be applied to all kind of machines, appliances and smart home devices as well as automotive interiors. Since many of those contain textile surfaces, it is of special interest to place SMA-based actuator-sensor-elements beneath a textile cover or integrated them in the textile itself. In this study, the unique features of SMAs are used to design a system which represents an active “morphing” button. It can lower into the surface it is integrated in, pops up to be used and shows a proportional signal output depending on the pushing stroke. The system is characterized concerning haptics and sensor technology. The button consists of a TPU structure, to which two NiTi wires are attached. When activated, the SMAs contract and the structure curves upwards. The user can now push on the device to use it as a button. In the future, the use of SMA wires and for example TPU fibers enables direct integration in the production process of a possible smart and functional textile.

Abstract:
Unprecedented competition among the worldwide automotive manufacturers has benefited the consumer, resulting in higher levels of overall quality while simultaneously reducing the time-to-market for new models. One subjective differentiator of automotive quality is the noise and vibration performance, as evident by the quieter interiors even in vehicles not typically associated with the luxury banner, such a large trucks. In essence, passenger compartments devoid of objectionable road and wind noise have become a fundamental customer requirement expected in all vehicles regardless of cost, thereby reducing the broadband masking content of the interior. This reduction of masking has the potential to make tonal noise more prominent and annoying, by increasing the tone-to-noise ratio, and as result, the perception of quality may suffer. Gear whine is one such tonal noise phenomena that must be diligently managed by automotive engineers in order to avoid objectionable passenger compartment noise. This can be quite challenging, since many gear design features implemented for increased durability are often counter productive for noise. Sources of gear whine include powertrain components such as automatic and manuals transmissions, axles, transfer cases, power-take of units, engine accessory drives, and an assortment of other potential noise makers. This paper will attempt a technology review of various practical methods for managing the gear whine phenomena, including the use of Quality Function Deployment charts, dynamic transmission error with parametric gear models, and response surface modeling for gear design optimization.

Abstract:
Understanding the needs and expectations of the intended users of a designed environment is recognized as one of the essential factors that influence the decision-making process in an interior design project. This situation is also reflected in interior design education, where students conventionally design for hypothetical clients and users. This study explores the contribution of a new user-focused and scenario-based design studio modal to students’ approach to successive stages of design processes, learning outcomes, and engagement to the project course during an online education period. Within the scope of the study, second-year interior design students were assigned to real artists and product designers as clients for a workshop for creative production- showroom project. The students had to communicate with their clients, do research and integrate the information they have collected into their design proposals. The paper concludes with an evaluation of the proposed model from students’ view. It is believed that the approach proposed and applied within the scope of the study has the potential to present a different perspective in interior design studio courses.

Abstract:
Abstract Sub-sea vertical Xmas tree is one of the key equipment in the oil industry. Erosion caused by particles in the flow of oil and gas may lead to equipment failure or even interruption of oil exploitation. Therefore, it is important to figure out the characteristics of erosion in vertical Xmas tree. In the present work, the AISI 8630 erosion model and the Forder wall rebound model has been applied to study the erosion of production channel and choke valve in the tree. The maximum and average surface erosion amount are introduced to evaluate the erosion degree. The results show that for the production channel, erosion mainly occurs in the interior of the turning point of the channel and the interior of the downstream wall near the joint, and the most serious eroded area is located at the bottom of the downstream wall of the channel. Comparing the effects of blind pipe length, particle concentration, particle size and flow velocity on the erosion wear of the production channel, it is found that the flow velocity is the main factor affecting erosion. As the velocity of fluid increases, the maximum and the average surface erosion on the inner wall of production channel increase in a steep manner. For the choke valve, as the relative opening increases, the maximum erosion amount decreases sharply. However, compared with the production channel, the wear of the valve channel is much more serious, and more attention should be paid in industrial operations.
