Abstract:
During the most recent conference of the Renaissance Society of America, two sessions were devoted entirely to the Renaissance in Poland. In fifty-nine editions of what is considered the most prestigious international appointment for experts of Renaissance culture, this is the first time that characteristic features of sixteenth-century Poland were the subject of analysis and debate. The interest generated at the conference and the academic value of the contributions convinced the organisers of the panels to ask the speakers to develop and revise their contributions to conform with the conventions of the academic article. The result is a selection of essays that pursue specific pathways in exploring the cultural factors that affected the Renaissance in Poland: influences and originality in Polish literary and artistic production, orthodoxy and dissidence, the circulation of thought and reflection on the Res Publica in the spheres of both politics and philosophy. Adopting a distinctly interdisciplinary approach, the aim of this publication is to focus certain aspects of the Polish Renaissance and the cultural identity of sixteenth-century Poland in relation to the European context.

Abstract:
Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, ROS and RNS, are ubiquitous in living cells. They have beneficial effects but are also the cause of a wide variety of diseases. However adding excessive amounts of reducing agents has a long history of clinical failure. This problem can be overcome by providing a novel ester of D-beta-hydroxybutyrate–R-1,3-butanediol, which is rapidly hydrolyzed to ketone bodies, the metabolism of which leads to the production of NADPH. The free cytosolic [NADP+]/[NADPH] redox potential is the most negative in the cell and sets the potential of the glutathione and ascorbic acid couples. Ketone bodies also act by inhibiting histone deacetylases, activating the transcription factor FOXO3 and increasing the transcription of enzymes involved in the destruction of ROS. Ketone esters would be effective in the treatment of a variety of disparate diseases where ROS play a role, ranging from Parkinson’s disease to radiation sickness and aging.

Abstract:
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced at low levels physiologically and their production conveys signals and has specific functions. Control mechanisms ensure that this does not cause damage. ROS are highly reactive and cytotoxic and are also deliberately produced by inflammatory cells (granulocytes, macrophages) to kill pathogens. If these chemicals are released inappropriately or excessively, or if control mechanisms are under-functioning, bystander or unintended tissue damage may be caused. The concept of oxidative stress is based on the idea that in certain states, commonly inflammatory states, release of oxygen radicals may be excessive, or control mechanisms weakened, so that tissue damage occurs. In CKD, both overproduction and diminished control may apply. No effective therapies acting via these pathways have been established so far though there remain some candidates.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Irish theatre in the 1950s, when the Abbey was in exile at the Queen’s, is often thought of a period in the doldrums, but in fact there were quite a number of exciting and adventurous little theatres working at this time. The best-known is the Pike, with its landmark productions ofThe Quare FellowandWaiting for Godot, but there was also the Lyric in Belfast with its commitment to Yeats’s plays, the Gas Company Theatre Company, and the Lantern bringing new and different forms of drama to Ireland. This chapter explores the impact of such ventures and the extent to which they helped renovate the Irish theatrical culture, serving as sites of critique of the dominant culture of the time. Of particular importance here is the 1957 production of Tennessee Williams’sThe Rose Tattooat the Pike Theatre, which was the subject of court prosecution .

Abstract:
Musical comedy in London’s West End theatres during and on either side of the Edwardian period is reassessed against the traditional narrative of period obsolescence and Americanization. This is done through close readings of audience capacity and demographics, musical economics, musical topics, script and lyric writing (including humour), standard plots, performance practice, and opulent production values. The genre’s celebration of modernity and investment not only in the British Empire but also in its own merchandise and afterlife of amateur productions is analysed. Special reference is made to the producer George Edwardes; the composers Lionel Monckton, Paul Rubens, and Howard Talbot; the lyricist Adrian Ross; the stars Gertie Millar and George Grossmith; and the shows The Arcadians, To-Night’s the Night, The Quaker Girl, and A Country Girl. The genre’s particular appeal during the First World War is also covered. Research questions for the future are raised.

Abstract:
This chapter contains an efficiency analysis for Indian industry from 1950–51 to 2013–14. Overall, there had been consistent growth in manufacturing employment over six decades, though by the 2010s only 13 million persons, or 0.1% of the population, had industrial jobs. Capital widening and deepening in India was substantial. In the 1950s, productive efficiency was high. In the 1960s, average productive efficiency declined sharply. In the 1970s, productive efficiency declined and stagnated till the 1980s when it started rising again. In the 1990s, productive efficiency rose and efficiency patterns were stable till the late 2010s when decline set in. Productive efficiency began a downward trend in the 2010s. In spite of capital widening and deepening, Indian industry was inept at managing technology. Indian industry has not possessed the competence to handle the knowledge embodied in fixed capital inputs, which is a hallmark of modern economies.
