Abstract:
Eco-design is relatively new and fast growing field of research due to its vital importance to the manufacturing industry and its related environmental issues such as reducing waste, and CO2 emission. A major EU programme relating to the environment is the waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive. The (WEEE) directive specifies ten categories and a voltage range which is up to 1.000 volts AC or 1.500volts DC. The developed framework came for the implementation of Eco-design principles that helps to take into account the adaption of the (WEEE) directive and the restriction of hazard substances (RoHS) used in electrical and electronic equipments. As a result of identify gaps and needs such as a lack of a comprehensive Eco-design framework and the need to integrate it to the normal business operation. In this research the PDCA framework for Eco-design and WEEE directive will be discussed. The framework will encompass all of the Eco-design¿s implementation and integration factors and activities such as WEEE and RoHS directives, Eco-design management, Environmental legislations, Eco-design tools and considerations. The literature review covers the topic of Eco-design¿s related issues, and WEEE and RoHS directives rules. Based on comprehensive questionnaire survey of Eco-design, WEEE and RoHS issues and activities among a sample of environmentally aware companies, statistical analysis is carried out using SPSS software. Osorio, Montoya Geovanny. "Conception des outils pour le suivi des activités et l’aide au pilotage dans le secteur médico-social." Thesis, Lyon, INSA, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015ISAL0135/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Improving the performance of medico-social sector requires management tools capable of quickly and synthetically provide a clear and quantified view of activities towards the users. Unfortunally, today does not exist a satisfactory tools to control activities in each structure, as neither at the level of the managing organization. The object of the research work is to develop tools to aid management and monitoring of activities in the medico-social sector in order to improve the current vision of the medico-social sector too compartmentalized. Closely related to Ressourcial (former information system department of OVE Foundation), this work is part of a CIFRE thesis and is one of the first theses of engineering sciences that address to organizational problems in the medical-social sector. The first scientific challenge of this research is to propose a formal and structured approach to monitoring activities in these institutions. The proposed approach should be able to realize a typology of activities in a very broad spectrum; activities performed by institutions with operating modes, and business cultures, highly heterogeneous. On this aspect, the scientist lock of this work is that the aggregation on the same model, intrinsically heterogeneous operating modes. The second scientific challenge of this thesis is the development of innovative approaches for analyzing these monitoring data and to aid management of these structures from the same data

Abstract:
Background: Today's markets have over time tended to become more global, which in turn has increased competition between companies. This has meant that many industry organizations have had to change in order to be competitive in the market. A concept that today permeates many companies is the lean practice, which is based on maximizing the use of resources, eliminating waste, and creating more efficient production. By working with lean, companies can achieve faster throughput time. For manufacturing industrial companies, a reduction in throughput time can generate various benefits. Some of these advantages are: reduced number of products in work, better quality, reduced costs, better forecasts, increased flexibility and reduced lead time towards customers.Press Kogyo has for a long period experienced problems with one of their processes. The main problem has been that they do not know what non-value-added activities/waste that can be found in the process and how these activitiesaffect the total throughput time of the process. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to map Press Kogyo's propeller process in order to be able to identify non-value-adding activities in the process. Furthermore, the study will provide Press Kogyo with proposals regarding how more efficient material and production control can reduce the throughput time in the propeller process. In order for the study to achieve theoretical relevance, another purpose of the study is to contribute with theories about how manufacturing companies, with a functional layout, can reduce the disadvantages of the layout with more efficient material and production control. Methodology: The study has been divided into three research questions. The first two research questions were specifically aimed at Press Kogyo, while the third research question was more generally directed at manufacturing companies with a functional layout. The study was conducted as a case study and was characterized by qualitative research methods. Empirical data has been collected through interviews, observations, and a focus group. For the first research question, process maps and VSM maps were created. This together with various interviews created the foundation for identifying non-value-adding activities/waste in the propeller process which affected the throughput time. For research question two, theory of material and production control was applied in order to reduce the non-value-adding activities/waste and consequently reduce throughput time in the process. Regarding research question three, interviews were conducted with Press Kogyo and another manufacturing company with a functional layout. The authors intended to, through these interviews, find answers to how manufacturing companies with a functional layout can reduce the disadvantages of the layout with the help of efficient material and production control. Conclusions: In the study, seven wastes were identified where “wait” was considered to be the waste that affected throughput time the most in the propeller process. To eliminate all waste and specifically the waste “wait”, methods and theories regarding material and production control was applied with a focus on production activity control (PAC). All the different theories that was used also created a theoretical model which can be a good basis for planning when companies with a functional layout want to find ways tostreamline their planning. Some parts of the theoretical model were also used later in the study where it was used to reduce the disadvantages that may exist with a functional layout

Business planning is not a new phenomenon in Ukraine's economy. It is an integral tool of the business environment used to create a new business or project. The business plan describes the main aspects of the future project or enterprise, analyzes all the problems it may face, and provides ways to solve them. It is also the main document on the basis of which partners, investors and creditors provide the necessary investments. In a market economy, such a plan should be a planned program to study the market and competitors, risk, production and economic, financial activities and sales and ensure 8 the adaptation of the firm to new conditions. This approach involves the possibility and need to develop local business plans for individual projects, products (goods) and services. In crisis conditions, the business plan of the enterprise is designed, above all, to solve the problem of improving its financial condition. The concept of the system of internal business planning is to create a system of management and analysis of all areas of financial and economic activity of the enterprise, which meet the following requirements: ⎯ Development of a functional model of the enterprise with the allocation of basic business units and management functions; ⎯ Interconnectedness of a complex of receptions in horizontal and vertical section; ⎯ Reliability and timeliness of analytical information obtained as a result of the enterprise; ⎯ Qualitative analysis and detection of deviations as a result of plan-factor comparison; ⎯ Flexible and fast scheme of adaptation to changes of internal and external factors. Thus, business planning is a universal tool that can be used with different target settings. The theoretical and practical fundamentals of enterprise business planning were investigated and summarized; thereupon the best ways to improve the effectiveness of drafting the business plans were developed. The theoretical fundamentals of enterprise business planning were investigated, and their essential characteristics were unified. The methodological principles of drafting the business plan were summarized, and the practice of business planning at LLC “LKT 2016” was analyzed. The proposals for business-planning improvement of the company under investigation in the context of adjusting to dynamic market changes were developed.

Nunna, Keerthana. "Production Deduction, What’s Your Function?: Analyzing the Effectiveness of the Domestic Production Activities Deduction." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2015. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/1137.

Full text
Abstract:
The domestic production activities deduction (DPAD) was created to incentivize U.S. firms to produce within the U.S. and thereby increase domestic investing. I test whether the DPAD is a large enough incentive for firms to invest in the U.S. I used a simulation, and I found that without the DPAD incentive the firms never chose to produce within the U.S. With the DPAD incentive, only firms with relatively low costs of labor will produce domestically. These firms are rare and will not have a large impact on domestic investment and these firms increasing their production in the U.S. will not have a large impact on our employment rates. Therefore, the U.S. government is losing out on tax revenue without a large benefit to the economy. I also analyzed the DPAD at the state level. Currently 25 states allow the DPAD, but since it is a broad domestic deduction, these states might not be gaining the benefit of increased investing in their own state. Through a separate simulation and ANOVA tests on archival data, I found that states do not benefit from the DPAD.

He, Feihu. "Using patterns in conceptual modeling of business activities." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/4081.

Full text
Abstract:
Patterns are used as building blocks for design and construction in many fields such as architecture, music, literature, etc. Researchers and practitioners in the information systems area have been exploring patterns and using them in system analysis and design. Patterns found in the analysis stage, when analysts create conceptual models to abstractly represent domain reality, are call business patterns or analysis patterns. Although various business patterns were proposed in previous studies, we found that business semantics were missing in these patterns. These business patterns failed to show functionalities that is essential to patterns in general. Most of these patterns were also not capable of describing business activities, the dynamic aspect of business. This study is conducted to address these issues. In this thesis, we provide a brief literature review on business patterns, and discuss the major problems we found in these studies. Then we introduce our research approach and the major outcomes. We propose a new definition of business patterns with business semantics, which enables us to recover the missing functionality in business patterns. We suggest the key elements to represent business patterns, and propose a two-level template (functional and operational) to describe these elements. Based on theR²M approach, we propose a modeling method with graphical notations to describe the operational level of patterns, where business activities can be modeled. Examples and a case study are provided in this thesis to demonstrate how to use the modeling method and how to use business patterns in practice.

Schild, André Jacques Paul. "Marketing Activities during the early stages of business." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/45047.

Full text
Abstract:
This research is the result of a need within the entrepreneurial community, amongst both existing businesses as well as aspiring entrepreneurs, to pay attention to the marketing skills, abilities and activities required to navigate in the rapidly changing business environment in which they operate. It’s no longer enough that an entrepreneur only possesses the entrepreneurial will and drive to start an enterprise. In order to succeed and thrive, they require a skill set that needs to be employed from the beginning. The ability of the entrepreneur to successfully market their business, particularly in the early phases of development, is a crucial skill that can ensure the survival of the enterprise. The research comprised of sixteen in-depth interviews with existing entrepreneurs in South Africa, as well as four with experts in the fields of SMEs and Marketing. All of the interviews were conducted face-to-face, with the exception of one of the SME and Marketing experts, whose interview was conducted telephonically. The interviews followed a semi-structured discussion guide that allowed for variations in the discussion as required. A number of the entrepreneurs interviewed had not conducted any marketing planning in the start-up phase of their ventures, yet succeeded. The entrepreneurs did, however, practice ad-hoc marketing activities in the early stages of their business, as well as networking with customers, suppliers and their industry. It was also found that the respondents’ knowledge of how to market their businesses increased over time, and as their businesses matured, they allocated more significant resources towards marketing their businesses. The research project concludes that: whilst beneficial, upfront marketing planning is not essential for start-ups; networking and ad-hoc marketing is important for start-ups to practice; putting a significant allocation of resources towards marketing is valuable.

Abstract:
To date, requirement engineering (RE) studies have proposed several methods for efficiently gathering correct and complete requirements for developing information systems. As one of the most widely-used RE approaches, goal-oriented requirement engineering (GORE) determines requirements based on an organization's goals for its information system. GORE methods vary, but most do not clarify how they obtain the primary goals. To address this uncertainty, a few studies have introduced some guidelines. This researcher believes however that further investigation is required to improve organizational analysis, and thereby attain more accurate definition of goals for the information system. The first step in organizational analysis should be defining business activities of users. To achieve such understanding, this thesis develops a role clarity framework, that operationalizes the concept of role ambiguity drawn from two organizational theories: role dynamics (Kahn, Wolfe, Quinn, Snoek, & Rosenthal, 1964) and goal setting and task performance (Locke & Latham, 1990). According to the proposed framework, a role’s expectations, activities, and consequences are essential for describing a role’s business activities. Findings reveal that a role’s activities express the core of a role’s business activities. In addition, a role’s expectations and consequences contain contextual information supporting analysts in collecting and evaluating a role’s business activities. More specifically, expectations clarify the origin of business activities, and consequences enable analysts to verify current business activities and anticipate potential ones.

Abstract:
No business can effectively be managed without the proper management and information that reflects and creates the milieu it operates in. Business performance management creates the framework in which a structured approach can be followed in setting the scene for a predictive and controllable environment. Business intelligence creates the information structures; information relationships and a reflection of the value chain of the business. By combining the two methodologies it creates a total business solution that harmonises all aspects of value creation in an objective manner. The aim of this study is to conduct a thorough theoretical study on the relevant aspects involved in business performance management and business intelligence, and to assess the relationship of business performance management and business intelligence within the South African natural resource' mining and manufacturing sector. The various processes of business performance management and business intelligence are discussed in the literature study. During the literature research several approaches to business performance management implementations and the pros and cons of business performance management are discussed. A broad look at business intelligence is done, with key focus on delivering of information.

Abstract:

Information technology is rapidly changing and companies are amending to the inevitable changes. Recently, the traditional Internet has started to evolve into a 3D Internet, thereby challenging companies into becoming more active in virtual worlds in order to keep up with the latest technology. In this thesis, the virtual world environment is highlighted from a v-business perspective to emphasize on potential opportunities and problems businesses face when entering virtual worlds. Moreover, the future outlook for v-business in virtual worlds is discussed, based on interviews with companies that are active in virtual worlds jointly with observed phenomenon identified in the literature study. Since Second Life is one of the largest and most recognized virtual worlds up to present, having a resemblance with the real world, this virtual world has been selected to pose as an example in this thesis. Taking this into consideration, the aim of this research is to answer the following research questions:

* What kind of value has v-business added to companies operating in virtual worlds and what kind of impact has it had?

* What kind of complexities and restrictions have companies experienced with v-business in virtual worlds, and why have these occurred?

* What does the future look like for v-business in virtual worlds considering opportunities and problems related to such a business approach?

Consequently, the purpose of this thesis is to examine the future outlook for v-business in virtual worlds, by investigating what opportunities and problems companies face in such a virtual setting, along with their predictions about its future development. Based on these findings an outline of the prospects of v-business will be developed.

Given that the area of this particular study is not yet broad in terms of research, the research has been conducted through an inductive approach using a qualitative method. Seven companies have been interviewed for this research and a majority of the company respondents have been interviewed through real-time communication using Skype.

The outcome of this research implies that there is great potential for v-business in virtual worlds, hence adding additional value to companies’ positioning on a yet unique environment. A number of possibilities have been identified where communication was identified as a major opportunity. In contrast, there are also current problems where technical restraints and comprehension problems were especially emphasized. However, in spite of some problems, companies report that they are in general very positive about the future outlook for v-business in virtual worlds, which is one of the reasons as to why we conclude that there is definitely a future awaiting for doing business in virtual worlds.

Abstract:
Slumping world aluminum prices have energized some aluminum producers to institute strategies to reduce product costs. This multiple comparative case study explored the strategies used by 4 aluminum producers in Western Europe: 2 companies that have successfully reduced production costs and 2 companies that have not. Wicksteed's economic theory of production and production costs was the conceptual framework for this research. Data from the companies' strategic and industry reports and from interviews with 32 senior managers were analyzed using pattern finding and clustering, a recursive approach to data gathering and analysis established by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. Six themes emerged: (a) upstream integration, (b) energy and price efficiency, (c) carbon-manufacturing capability, (d) operational excellence and productivity, (e) technological and research developmental abilities, and (f) circular economy. The analysis of these themes indicated that the most significant opportunities for productivity improvement include (a) minimizing energy and material use, specifically alumina, cathodes, and carbon, (b) vertically integrating alumina production, (c) developing an efficient circular economic model that integrates the material properties to expand the recyclability of waste, and (d) increasing the electrolytic cell life cycle. Overall, vertical integration provides a competitive advantage and gives the producer ability to control costs. In-house carbon manufacturing capacity reduces a smelter's operating cost. Technological capabilities can minimize energy and material consumption rates. Increased productivity and reduced energy and material use can yield positive social changes, such as the preservation of natural resources, reduced emissions, and waste.

In essence, literature showed that, if cash from operating activities would be negative for two successive years, such listed industrial company may be classified as fmancially inflexible, resulting in a take-over by another company, a forced rights-issue or even a delisting/bankruptcy. The traditional cash from operating activities will be classified as EBIT - interest - taxation + depreciation and +/- non-cash items +/- changes in working capital. To enable capital-intensive companies to be classified as financially flexible or inflexible, it was found necessary to identify replacement investment activities as opposed to expansion investment activities.

Abstract:
Competitive intelligence (CI) can be loosely defined as the process by which an organization legally and systematically collects, organizes, analyzes, and disseminates the information about its competitive environment. Notwithstanding the growing interest in CI, there are few empirical investigations on the work activities of CI professionals. This research addresses three basic questions: Who are CI professionals, which tasks and activities are they engaged in and how do they go about them, and what factors constrain their performance and completion of these tasks and activities? Twenty-eight CI professionals across Canada participated in the study from 24 different organizations, representing 16 specific industries. These CI professionals include various intelligence managers and analysts, market researchers, strategic advisors, and information specialists, representing two main groups: business professionals and information professionals. Their major goals are to heighten awareness of the competitive environment in which their organizations compete and to enhance decision making by their various clients. To achieve these goals, they engage in 10 general classes of activities: news scanning and monitoring; project management; responding ad hoc requests; communicating with various stakeholders; preparing CI products/deliverables; perusing and evaluating various materials; writing and editing diverse documents; coaching and training other staff for CI; undertaking training themselves; and administrative, non-CI, and sundry other activities. Among them, most of time is allocated to preparing CI products or deliverables, communicating with various stakeholders, and email processing and news scanning. Abstract:
This thesis explores the adoption of a Value-Based Procurement Strategy. A procurement strategy is value-based when it facilitates procurement to develop attractive value propositions for both suppliers and internal stakeholders. The procurement function, including its activities and organization, and the collaboration with suppliers, are shaped to achieve this goal. SAAB, a Swedish military fighter airplane manufacturer, has been driven to adopt such a strategy by its surrounding context and market position, which demand that SAAB find new ways to attract key suppliers. SAAB responded to this demand by offering suppliers alternative benefits in terms of, for example, knowledge, intelligence, standardization, co-marketing, and prioritization. SAAB offers the empirical opportunity taken by this thesis to explore Value-Based Procurement. A theoretical framework built on literature on procurement in terms of procurement context, procurement activities, and procurement organization informs this study. The framework also encompasses literature on value and value propositions. A value perspective describes well both how SAAB’s procurement function has been shaped, and the work that the procurement department does. Nearly thirty hours of interviews with people of different roles within the procurement organization of SAAB and a workshop involving multiple key informants form the empirical base for this explorative, qualitative, single-case study. A thick empirical description of SAAB’s Strategic Sourcing department and its work allows the reader to assess generalizability. The analysis building thereon results in nineteen propositions for how the adoption of a Value- Based Procurement Strategy has implications for procurement activities and organization. This study contributes in several ways to research. It recounts an in-depth revelatory case of the adoption of a Value-Based Procurement Strategy and a customer taking a leading role in developing value propositions for suppliers and itself, thus providing insight into an unexplored area. The procurement context encourages the adoption of a Value-Based Procurement Strategy and plays a role in determining what is valuable to suppliers. The procurement activities and procurement organization play enabling roles in successfully implementing Value-Based Procurement, and act as drivers of value proposed to suppliers. Value propositions are tools for developing procurement strategy and for execution thereof through procurement. This thesis also deepens the understanding of value by promoting a parallel view of co-developed customer and supplier value. Finally, it contributes to procurement literature by showing that the buying side has value propositions to make. This thesis contributes to managers by illustrating how a Value- Based Procurement Strategy can be adopted, and possible reasons why it should. It also proposes “value actions” as possible Value-Based Procurement Strategy improvement efforts.

Abstract:
Business Administration
Ph.D.;
My dissertation consists of three essays. The first paper explores the determinants of the share of workers' compensation benefits provided by self-insured employers over the period 1983-2000. We examine hypotheses that the self-insurers' share is determined by industry affiliation, price level, firm size, along with statewide levels of loss severity and frequency. Prior studies have produced mixed results concerning whether self-insurers are primarily high-risk or low-risk. Our panel regression analysis indicates that a positive and statistically reliable relationship exists between self-insurance and the health services sector which is characterized by high nonfatal incidence rates. Our findings put forth evidence that employers in the high-risk health industry are very likely to self-insure. The second article explores the determinants of self-insurance for workers' compensation liability by hospitals. Using cross-sectional hospital data in Pennsylvania, this study examines firm-specific characteristics of self-insurers. The logistic regressions suggest a link between the control type of a hospital and self-insurance. Nonprofit hospitals are more likely to self-insure, while for-profit hospitals prefer market insurance. Aside from large size, self-insured hospitals are associated with concentration of businesses within a state and the self-insurance pattern of their competitors. The prevalence of self-insurance among hospitals provides evidence that high-risk employers tend to choose alternative risk transfer. The decision to self-insure can be isolated from residual market arguments. The third investigates whether insurance activities (underwriting and agency) enhance the financial performance of financial holding companies (FHCs). Stiroh and Rumble (2006) and Yeager et al. (2007) have argued that extension of banking to non-banking activities provides no diversification benefits for FHCs eligible to consolidate banking and insurance services. Using quarterly panel observations of 510 FHCs over the period 2003-2005, we obtain two main results: First, when we employ the aggregate non-interest income as a measure of expansion, risk-adjusted return of FHCs is positively associated with a shift toward non-interest activities. Second, when we disaggregate the sample by FHC size, risk-adjusted return is positively associated with insurance agency activities in small-sized FHCs and positively associated with insurance underwriting activities in large-sized FHCs. An implication of our finding is that both small and large FHCs can reap diversification benefits as long as they choose the right niche.

Abstract:
Torrefaction is a technology for increasing the energy density of biomass by heating wood to 200-350 °C in a no-oxygen environment. The technology has been expected to enter the market for several years, but little has happened although studies have been carried out. In this study, a business model is created for a production unit of black pellets in Sweden. This was done by a SWOT analysis and a Business Model Canvas, as well as a comprehensive literature review. In parts of the literature analysis, focus was put on market prices, legal requirements and sustainability. The result of this study is a possible business model for a black pellet production company, including both opportunities and risks. The results show that the technology is mature, and that the main issues are of economic nature. Finding investments and customers for the product are the two main challenges for any interested in starting a production. The study concludes that a production of black pellets in Sweden is possible.

Xu, Deshun. "Syngas Impurity Effects on Cell Growth, Enzymatic Activities and Ethanol Production via Fermentation." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2012. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3280.

Full text
Abstract:
A syngas compositional database with focus on trace impurities was established. For this work, ammonia (NH3) and benzene (C6H6) effects on cell growth, enzymatic activities of hydrogenase and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), and product formation were studied. NH3, after entering media, will be converted rapidly to NH4+, which will raise the total osmolarity of the media. NH3, as a common nutrient for the cell growth, is not the real culprit for cell growth inhibition. In essence, it is the high osmolarity resulting from the accumulation of NH4+ in the media which disrupts the normal regulation of the cells. It was concluded that at NH4+ concentration above 250 mM, the cell growth was substantially inhibited. However, P11 cells used in this study can likely adapt to an elevated osmolarity (up to 500 mM) although the mechanism is unknown. It was also found that higher osmolarity will eventually lead to higher ethanol per cell density. In conclusion, NH3 needs to be cleaned out of syngas feeding system. The realistic C6H6 concentration in the media coming from a gasifier was simulated in bioreactors and was measured by a GC/MS. The most realistic C6H6 concentration in the media was around 0.41 mM (upper limit 0.83 mM). However, five elevated concentrations of 0.64, 1.18, 1.72, 2.33, and 3.44 mM were doped into the media. It was found that at 3.44 mM cell growth and ethanol production were significantly affected. However, there was only negligible adverse effect on cell growth and ethanol production at 0.41 mM, which is the expected concentration in bioreactors exposed to syngas. Therefore, it is unnecessary to remove C6H6 from the gas feeding stream. A kinetic model for hydrogenase activity that included inhibition effects of NH4+ and C6H6 was developed. Experimental results showed that NH4+ is a non-competitive inhibitor for hydrogenase activity with KNH4+ of (649 ± 35) mM and KH2 of (0.19 ± 0.1) mM. This KH2 value is consistent with those reported in literature. C6H6 is also a non-competitive inhibitor but a more potent one compared to NH4+ (KC6H6=11.4 ± 1.32 mM). A KH2 value of (0.196 ± 0.022) mM is also comparable with literature and also with the NH4+ study. At a realistic C6H6 concentration of 0.41 mM expected in bioreactors exposed to syngas, hydrogenase activity is expected to be reduced by less than 5%. Forward ADH activity was not adversely affected up to 200 mM [NH4+].From the current work, NH3 should be targeted for removal but it is not necessary to remove C6H6 when designing an efficient gas cleanup system.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Lean production and performance management are very important aspect in the production process because when activities that do not add value to a product are not reduced or eliminated it would amount to waste which would eventually result to unnecessary cost for the organization. Thus it is vital to have the right performance management system in place to control of the organization. Objectives: The purpose of this thesis is to first identify the different types of production wastes evident in the production process of the case companies and how these waste have been reduced or eliminated. As the management of performance in lean production is very important, the second objective of this study is find out how these companies are currently managing performance in lean production in comparison with the performance management systems model Method: This is a multiple-case study with systematic combining approach as the orientation. Interview and documents are the instruments of data collection. Empirical data from each case has been analyzed based on cross and within case analysis. Construct validity, external validity, and reliability are the basis for scientific credibility of this thesis. Conclusions: Not all types of production wastes are evident in all the case companies studied due to one reason or the other. In reducing or eliminating these wastes, they have adopted different lean principles based on their product type. When it comes to managing performance in lean production it is clear that each of the case company adopts almost similar performance management systems although they have adopted different approach. Suggestions for future research: It would be interesting to undergo a similar research in the service sector to see if the findings arrived would be the same or if it will lead to contradictory results. Additionally, since the main focus was on performance in within the studied case companies, it would be interesting to see the outcome of how performance management between these companies and their external suppliers would turn out.

Ni, Aimin. "Stock market activities, economic growth and firm growth : evidence from China." Thesis, Brunel University, 2017. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/16155.

Full text
Abstract:
How important is the financial market for economic growth? It can be argued that from the supply perspective that a well-functioning stock market boosts economic growth by lowering the cost of the firm to access public funds for new investment opportunities to expand business and production. Another view suggests that from the demand perspective that stock markets create a wealth effect on consumption for economic growth. In turn, the growth induces more demand for financial services and so the growth of the stock market. Both the supply and the demand argument imply a positive relationship between the stock market and the economy. Exactly how the behaviour of investors in trading stocks on a stock market can affect the performance of the firm is unclear. The study of this question helps to understand how stock trading activities can affect manufacturing production and so the growth of an economy from the perspective of the micro structure of a market. China as the largest emerging economy in the world has experienced the fastest growth of the economy and rapid development of its stock market over the last 30 years. It provides us with an excellent case to study the question on how the momentum of paper trading of shares can be transmitted to the growth of industry and firms which is a determined part of a real economy. The thesis takes China to study the question in an attempt to discover the micro mechanism of transmission as its key contribution to the existing literature on the study of the stock market effect on economic growth. The thesis employs a fixed effects model to estimate longitudinal firm-level data comprising 2233 heterogeneous Chinese listed firms over the period 2005-2015. In our estimation, it finds how stronger stock-trading performance can induce an increase in external funding of the firm. It then shows how the improvement in a firm's financing ability will turn to improvements in inter-firm reallocations of resources towards the more productive firms. However, the presence of equity over-trading appears to hinder the growth of firm business, possibly because the negative externalities of the speculative trading outweigh the effect of the positive externalities, such as excessive volatility that creates high risk of stock investment. Overall, empirically, the thesis establishes a micro-economic structure of transmission from stock trading activities to the growth of the firm. The structure explains the importance of stock markets on economic growth from the supply perspective of an economy.

Vasanjee, Kamlesh C. "Business activities at the base of the pyramid (BOP) in South Africa." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/26573.

Abstract:
This research was designed to provide insight into South African financial companies’ activities among the poor or the BOP (Base Of the Pyramid). South African businesses should build resources and capabilities with a strategic intent to create and exploit the traditionally under serviced markets while delivering goods and services that are of value. In doing so, managers, marketers and business leaders should view the South African adult population as households and not individual decision makers. The aim of this study was to determine the applicability of an equal partnership model for the BOP engagement in the South African economy. In the investigation of the equal partnership model, it was found that the participants (including the BOP as producers or consumers, business, local community members, nongovernmental organisations and local government) could derive mutual value. This mutual value can be described as the enhancement in growth for the business, raising the BOP out of poverty, involving the poor in the economy and boosting national economic growth (through job creation, tax revenue and investment). Findings of this research supported the aspects of resource commitment, experiential preparation, innovation and technology use in product or services together with mutual value creation for all partners (especially the poor). In addition, there was support for the different levels of risk taken by the partners, responsibilities expected from participants, the sustainability of the collaboration and the required depth of understanding of BOP circumstances. Bank managers responded positively to there being value at the level of the poor (such as profits, poverty alleviation and improved reputation). The collectivist nature of the poor in South Africa (in that the poor carry out financial decisions at the household level) was not established in this research and needs further investigation.

Parsons, Dennis D. "The Status of Public School/Business Collaborative Activities in Virginia, 1998 - 1999." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27354.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to ascertain important information that was lacking about current school/business collaborative activities in the Commonwealth of Virginia and to compare those activities to the findings of a study conducted by Larkin C. Phillips of school/business collaborative activities during the 1990-91 school year. This study used the same survey questions that were used by Phillips and was designed to provide the following information: (a) Common characteristics of school divisions in Virginia that conducted collaborative activities during the 1998-99 school year as compared to the 1990-1991 school year,(b) The types of collaborative activities conducted in Virginia during the 1998-99 school years as compared to the 1990-1991 school year,(c) Current resources used to manage collaborative activities as compared to the 1990-91 school year, and(d) Types of businesses that participated in collaborative activities in 1998-99 as compared to the 1990-91 school year.A survey was sent to all superintendents of public school divisions in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Superintendents from 99 school divisions, 76 percent of the school divisions in Virginia, returned the survey. The responses indicated that 72 percent of the responding divisions conducted school/business collaborative activities during the 1998-99 school year. This was an eight percent decrease from the 1990-1991 school year. Of the school divisions reporting no collaborative activity in this study 89 percent were located in rural areas. In contrast, more than 90 percent of the school divisions in cities and suburbs indicated collaborative activity with businesses. Small school divisions and less wealthy school divisions were less likely to conduct collaborative activities than were larger and wealthier school divisions. The most conducted collaborative activities in the typical Virginia school division at all grade levels were: providing career awareness activities; providing special awards for pupils, teachers or the school; donating or loaning equipment or materials; and sponsoring tutoring programs for pupils. As compared to the Phillips study, there were large increases in businesses providing tutoring at the elementary and middle/junior high school levels. And at the high school level there was a 22 percent increase in partners providing internships for students.During the 1998-1999 school year in Virginia the management of collaborative activities was most often managed totally at each participating school. The person most likely to initiate collaborative activity with business was the building principal. The most likely type of businesses involved in collaborative activities with school divisions was service, civic, manufacturing and retail. The mining industry was least likely to be involved in collaborative activities.

Abstract:
The business environment of the manufacturing industry is changing from a hardware-based product focus to a process and function focus. A current industrial interest is the development and sale of functions. This function could be realised as a product based on hardware, software and services, and may be sold as a function rather than as hardware. This function view is referred to as Functional Products (FP). The new focus for the customer is on value rather than hardware. This presents new challenges for how engineering hardware design may best be carried out. Sale of functional products requires a changed business model in which the price of the functional product is related to the functionality of the product itself; hence the name functional product. The supplier can in such a scenario no longer sell maintenance and spare parts. Instead, these activities become a cost, thus motivating the supplier to increase process efficiency, decrease internal production cost by using less energy per produced unit andincrease knowledge about use-cases. The researcher's challenge is how to create new knowledge regarding functional product development for academic as well as for industrial benefit. The research question was formulated as: How may methods or tools for design process modelling and simulation be developed to support functional product development? Four case studies were carried out in Swedish industry. Case study 1 was carried out in cooperation with Hägglunds Drives AB. Case study 2 was carried out in cooperation with companies Hägglunds Drives AB, Volvo Aero and Volvo Car Corporation. Case study 3 was carried out in cooperation Volvo Aero and Case study 4 was carried out in cooperation with nine industrial companies during the formation of the Faste Laboratory, Centre for Functional Product Innovation. Results include the need for integrating product development process and company strategy for functional product development and the identification of the need for new methods and tools to enable better understanding of technology and business processes. The research shows the possibility of evaluating cost and time of development before doing the actual product development work by modelling and simulating the design process. Thus, the knowledge that previously was implicit in the work process is made explicit and possible to manipulate for a desired outcome. Linking the future business cases to work processes by modelling and simulation enables knowledge re-use and work-process predictions concerning cost and time. Hence, modelling and simulation of work processes results in better knowledge of company development capacity earlier than before, thus allowing shorter reaction time to changes in the business domain.

Archibugi, Daniele. "The sectoral structure of innovative activities in Italy : results and methodology." Thesis, University of Sussex, 1991. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.303220.

Abstract:
The measurement of innovative activity is a critical issue of the analysis of technological change. The first part of this dissertation argues that the standard distinction between producer and user sectors of innovation is a necessary but not sufficient condition to obtain a satisfactory accounting framework of technological change. A further distinction between the subjects (such as firms) and the objects (the innovations themselves) of technological change is needed. An empirical application is provided with a matrix of patents by firms and technological fields which allows to find out "who innovates where" in the Italian economy. Using technological indicators such as R&D. patenting and a survey on 24.000 Italian business units. the second part of the thesis identifies the quantitative characteristics of the Italian innovation system. An international comparison of the technological potential of the country is performed. and it shows that Italy is still lagging behind the most advanced countries in the volume of her technological activities. Her sectoral strengths are to be found in mature technologies while her weaknesses are in fields, such as electronics and information technologies, expected to have a growing impact on future economic development. The industrial organization underlying Italian technological specialization is also considered, showing that the country's fields of excellence are seldom related to the innovative activities of the largest firms. No significant connection emerged between the degree of industries' concentration on the one hand and technological specialization on the other. The sources of innovative activity are- identified, and significant cross-industry and cross-size differences emerged. A taxonomy by industries is presented where concentration ratios, the nature and sources of innovation are taken as distinguishing criteria. This taxonomy, rather than stressing the role of small or large firms, suggests that sectoral differences explain more than it is generally believed in understanding technological change in Italy.

Maina, Mary Nyawira. "A study of learning and identity production within extracurricular activities set for university students." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2014. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10021707/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of two extracurricular groups – a Dance Group and a Singing Group established for students at a university in the United Kingdom. The study centres on learning facilitated by student group social practices in relation to the production of identities, focusing particularly on gender and the role of the body. A review of the existing literature reveals distinct strands in this area. The first focuses academic success and future employment. A second strand critiques simplistic notions of academic skills and employability. The third analyses a diversity of student identities development within communities of practice in legitimate peripheral participation. This study extends this third strand by investigating the questions: How are student identities constructed in extracurricular dance and singing groups in a UK university? What role do the body and gender play in identity construction? Ethnographic techniques mainly participant observation and general conversations were utilised for collection of empirical data from student groups for one academic year (2007-2008) for ten sessions each term, as well as additional related events. The analysis draws on three bodies of theory: the theory of the body and of corporeal realism (Shilling, 2012), feminist theory and theories of masculinities and femininities (e.g. Connell, 2013); and the community of practice theory of learning (Wenger, 1998; Lave and Wenger, 1991). Analysis suggests that extracurricular groups were used to both achieve an externally-set objective and for engagement in complex social relations that constitute a significant aspect of student life. Furthermore, analysis explores specific ways in which masculine and feminine identities were produced. Gendered norms and relations were variably repeated, challenged or resisted through students’ embodied engagement in group activities. Thus, this contribution enhances existing knowledge through analysis that incorporates the importance of the human body in gendered identity production within extracurricular activities in higher education.
