Abstract:
This chapter explores the factors that affect the firm’s decision to undertake product innovation. The discussion encompasses the driving forces that encourage product innovation, for example innovation by others or the ageing of an existing product line; however, the basic rationale is the search for profits. The chapter also addresses decisions about: the extent of innovation in general; horizontal and vertical product innovations separately; and the location of innovations in product space. The role of market structures in the product innovation decision, uncertainty in the innovating environment, and issues relating to emulation and copying are also addressed. Constraints to product innovation that survey data indicate are most important—innovation costs, risk and finance, and the availability of qualified labour—are also addressed.

Abstract:
Nokia scaled up remarkably quickly in the 1990s, faster than any producer of a complicated product ever had before. However, by 1995 Nokia had lost control of its supply chain, going through what it refers to as a “logistics crisis.” This chapter reviews and analyzes the factors that allowed extremely fast growth, and also discusses how Nokia was able to recover from the logistics crisis by bringing greater discipline to how Nokia Mobile Phones was run and greater sophistication to supply chain management. Nokia also created a New Venture organization with a mission to search for a “third leg,” beyond the successful Mobile Phones and Networks businesses. The chapter analyzes how these developments enabled the continuation of extraordinarily rapid growth through the late 1990s, but also sowed the seeds of later difficulties.

Yaari, Nurit. Nissim Aloni. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198746676.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter presents the theatrical works of the Israeli author, translator, playwright, and director Nissim Aloni, who was the first Israeli director to draw upon ancient Greek myths, classical Greek drama, and the Western theatrical tradition to produce contemporary Israel plays and performances. The sense of foreignness and unfamiliarity evoked by Modernist plays magnified his own sense that—as a Jew, an Israeli, and a product of the twentieth century—he was not part of that long tradition. He therefore sought, in his plays, to bridge gaps, to bring together ancient and new myths, and to build the foundations of a modern Israeli theatre. This discussion focuses in particular on Aloni’s adoption of the dramatic template of Sophocles’ Oedipus Tyrannus, and on his attempts to incorporate it into his plots as he sought to create dramatic figures that grapple with their destiny and search for their identity.

Batson, C. Daniel. A Scientific Search for Altruism. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190651374.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book provides an example of how the scientific method can be used to address a fundamental question about human nature. For centuries—indeed for millennia—the egoism–altruism debate has echoed through Western thought. Egoism says that the motivation for everything we do, including all of our seemingly selfless acts of care for others, is to gain one or another self-benefit. Altruism, while not denying the force of self-benefit, says that under certain circumstances we can care for others for their sakes, not our own. Over the past half-century, social psychologists have turned to laboratory experiments to provide a scientific resolution of this human nature debate. The experiments focused on the possibility that empathic concern—other-oriented emotion elicited by and congruent with the perceived welfare of someone in need—produces altruistic motivation to remove that need. With carefully constructed experimental designs, these psychologists have tested the nature of the motivation produced by empathic concern, determining whether it is egoistic or altruistic. This series of experiments has provided an answer to a fundamental question about what makes us tick. Framed as a detective story, the book traces this scientific search for altruism through the numerous twists and turns that led to the conclusion that empathy-induced altruism is indeed part of our nature. It then examines the implications of this conclusion—negative implications as well as positive—both for our understanding of who we are as humans and for how we might create a more humane society.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter presents a philosophical reading of the writer Heinrich von Kleist (1788–1811) and his oeuvre. Kleist’s connections with the movement of Romanticism only become properly evident when measured against the weight of philosophical problems Kleist felt to be pressing even before his career as a writer began. The most considerable of these was the problem of philosophical scepticism, a by-product of his early encounter with the philosophy of Immanuel Kant. The picture of Kleist presented here is one of an earnest mind in search of an answer to a problem that emerged in the philosophical discussion after Kant and, in one sense at least, has never left us.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter begins with a brief analysis of the sexual and racial politics of the Life Always antichoice billboard campaign. It argues that black women writers' participation in what might be considered pornographic industries promotes a form of guerilla warfare, whose objective is to protect and secure women's erotic sovereignty and reproductive freedom. While funk and porn have each been hystericized as the province of men, funk is also viewed as an affective technology that can sustain reciprocal interactions that would improve the lives of women and, in the end, the men and children in their lives. The chapter shows how the way women pursue the terms of their liberation underscores the radical possibilities of what it means to desire versus to be an object of desire, and to create versus to produce.

Abstract:
The third chapter of China’s Digital Nationalism discusses a common access route into digital networks: the search engine. The chapter first presents scholarship on web queries and their social relevance, including state-of-the-field research on the world’s most ubiquitous search engine, Google, but also on China’s search engines. It then takes a tour through China’s search engine environment, experimenting with various platforms to see what happens when users search for Sino-Japanese issues. As this chapter shows, China’s search engines reproduce many of the biases that scholars have identified for other search engines, but they also generate additional biases through the commercial imperatives under which they labour. The chapter concludes that this outcome is owed to a ‘digital bias’ that is produced when algorithms draw from material, social, as well as subjective factors to generate effective search results for users, which in China actively contributes to the construction of the Chinese nation.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter brings together arguments from economics, sociology, and political economy to show that innovation processes are characterized by a dilemma between the advantages of aligned expectations—including greater coordination and investment—and those of diversity, including superior openness to new technological possibilities. To illustrate the argument, the chapter discusses a historical case involving one of the largest coordinated peace-time attempts to hasten technological innovation in the history of capitalism, namely the US energy technology policies of the 1970s and 1980s. Close examination of the commercialization of photovoltaics and synthetic fuel initiatives illustrates both sides of the dilemma between shared versus diverse expectations in innovation: coordination but possible premature lock-in on the one hand, and openness but possible stagnation on the other. The chapter shows that even the exploration and interpretation of new technologies may be as much a product of focused investment as of trial-and-error search.
