Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:

Dixon, R. M. W. "Internal reconstruction of tense-modal suffixes in Jarawara." Diachronica 18, no. 1 (December 31, 2001): 3–30. http://dx.doi.org/10.1075/dia.18.1.03dix.

Full text
Abstract:
Summary Jarawara (from the small Arawá family in southern Amazonia) has a system of eleven tense-modal suffixes, which show irregular form; each consists of an initial part (of form -hV-) and a final part of one or two syllables; both parts mark gender of the pivot argument in the clause. An earlier stage of the paradigm, which was almost regular, is obtained by internal reconstruction. The method hinges on recognition that the vowel e plays a pervasive role in diachronic change, engendering various types of assimilation. In addition, what was the final syllable of the stem has — as the result of reallocation of morpheme and word boundaries — been reanalysed as the initial -hV- syllable of the suffix.

Perception, the centre of the Modian imagination in Vestiaire de l’enfance ABSTRACT: Like the Proustian narrator in À la recherche du temps perdu, the Modian narrator seems to be tossed back and forth between mnemonic experience and reality under the influence of perception. This induction is due to the postulate that Jimmy Sarano's addiction, the pivotal character of the narrative in Vestiaire de l'enfance, metamorphoses from a perceptionist state elicited by Rose-Marie that seems familiar to him. Thus, begins several imaginations in the narrative process. The analysis proposes, by means of the phenomenology of perception, to decipher the latent imaginary of Patrick Modiano's work.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The rolling motion of the pads with rocker back (RB) and ball and socket pivots is normally neglected in common software programs for the study of the rotor dynamic behavior of tilting pad journal bearings (TPJB). In other words, the theoretical contact point of the pivot is considered fixed. The aim of this work is to provide a novel way to implement in commercial software the effect of the variation of the circumferential coordinate of the theoretical contact point due to the pad rolling motion in RB TPJB. This is done by introducing an equivalent pivot rotational stiffness evaluated with an analytically derived formula, validated through finite element analysis. Such a stiffness is a function of the pad load and the radii of the contact pair, increasing with the load, the radii, and the degree of conformity of the contact. The static and dynamic characteristics of a five pad RB TPJB are then evaluated with a commercial software with and without the rotational stiffness contribution for two different pivot geometries. Non-negligible differences were found, particularly regarding the cross-coupled dynamic coefficients that show the higher sensitivity to the rotational stiffness. The inclusion of a pivot rotational stiffness among the data of commercial software for simulation of RB TPJB could contribute to fill the gap between numerical and experimental results.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in the cockpit require a deeper understanding of the cognitive processes of the pilot. This paper describes ongoing research concerned with developing cognitive models of pilot behavior that can support the development of expert systems and machine reasoning within the cockpit. An experiment is reported where the behavior of pilots within a flight simulator is observed. Verbal instructions given by the controlling pilot in a “division of labor” task are used to identify salient features of pilot cognitive models of the task. The results of this experiment are interpreted in terms of their implications for the development of future expert systems within the cockpit. Continued research on the cognitive models used by pilots should permit the development of a knowledge base that will assist display design, training programs, and research on mental workload within the cockpit.

Abstract:
Background and Purpose: Therapeutic reasoning—the mental process of making judgments and decisions about treatment—is developed through acquisition of knowledge and application in actual or simulated experiences. Health professions education frequently uses collaborative small group work to practice therapeutic reasoning. This pilot study compared the impact of a web-based/mobile tool for collaborative case work and discussion to usual practice on student perceptions and performance on questions designed to test therapeutic knowledge and reasoning. Methods: In a therapeutics course that includes case-based workshops, student teams of 3 to 4 were randomly assigned to usual workshop preparation (group SOAP sheet) or preparation using the Practice Improvement using Virtual Online Training (PIVOT) platform. PIVOT was also used in the workshop to review the case and student responses. The next week, groups crossed over to the other condition. Students rated favorability with the preparatory and in-workshop experiences and provided comments about the PIVOT platform via a survey. Student performance on examination items related to the 2 workshop topics was compared. Results: One hundred and eleven students (94%) completed post-workshop surveys after both workshops. The majority of students (57%) preferred using the PIVOT platform for workshop collaboration. Favorability ratings for the in-workshop experience did not change significantly from first to second study week, regardless of sequence of exposure. There was no relationship between examination item scores and the workshop platform the students were exposed to for that content ( P = .29). Student responses highlighted the efficiency of working independently before collaborating as a group and the ability to see other students’ thought processes as valuable aspects of PIVOT. Students expressed frustration with the PIVOT user interface and the lack of anonymity when discussing their answers in the workshop. Conclusion: A web-based/mobile platform for student team collaboration on therapeutic reasoning cases discussed in small group settings yielded favorable ratings, examination performance comparable to standard approaches, and was preferred by a majority of students. During the rapid shift to substantial online learning for the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual collaboration tools like PIVOT may help health professions teachers to better support groups working virtually on scaffolded therapeutic reasoning tasks.

Abstract:
Water management is a key field to support life and economic activity nowadays. The greatly increased mechanization of agriculture, mainly through center pivot irrigation systems, represents a big challenge to control this resource. Irrigated agriculture makes up the large majority of consumptive water use, therefore it is important to identify and quantify these systems. Currently, with 6.95x10⁶ ha, Brazil is among the 10 largest countries in irrigation areas in the world. In this study, a combined Computer Vision and Machine Learning approach is proposed for the identification of center pivots in remote sensing images. The methodology is based on Circular Hough Transform (CHT) and Balanced Random Forest (BRF) classifier using vegetation indices NDVI/SAVI generated from Landsat 8 images and Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) data provided by project MapBiomas. The candidate's circles of pivots identified on images are filtered based on vegetation behavior and shape characteristics of these areas. Our approach was able to detect 7358 pivots, reaching 83.86% of Recall for 52 scenes analyzed overall Brazil compared with mapping done by the Brazilian National Water and Sanitation Agency (ANA). In some scenes, the Recall reaches up to 100%.

Abstract:
In the conditions of now even heightened uncertainty, companies' strategies need to be verified. In order to quickly redefine and adapt a new strategy to the changing market conditions, it is necessary to implement new solutions and business models along with pivots. The enterprise of tomorrow is the one that starts today. So in order to be or become this enterprise of tomorrow, the level of its digitization and many of the processes carried out must be raised. The aim of the article is to present pivots and possible changes to the pivots of Innovative Business Models and their implementation. The research method that will be used is the analysis of case studies - how companies should recover from the situation of the Covid-19 pandemic, what they can do, how they should function, so that they can continue to grow faster. S. Umiński in Forum-Marketera + in the article Marketing A.D.2030 (Forum2021) stated that we took over from the world of start-ups the concept of pivot, i.e. a strategic shift and redefinition of the business model. It should be more and more often used in large corporations that so far pride themselves on using the -agile- methodology in various implementations. In this article, practical examples (case studies) of a Polish and foreign company will be presented - identification of redefining the strategy and implementation of pivots together with better results of further development of these companies. Examples of companies are Velg Group and Shopify, in which pivots were implemented, which emphasizes the practical approach of the co-author of the article. The research questions refer to what types of pivots and they are implemented, which will be presented based on the example of the above-mentioned case studies.

Abstract:
The aim of the present study was to describe the morphological and performance characteristics of elite handball players using data collected over the last two decades within the talent evaluation program of the Slovenian Handball Federation. A total of 1066 elite male handball players selected for one of the Slovenian national teams (U17, U19, U21 or senior) were recruited. The data were collected from 2007/8 to the 2021/22 season. The main effects were observed for: body height, body weight, and body mass index (BMI). The muscle mass percentage differed only between different age categories (p = 0.003; η2 = 0.015), while the fat mass percentage (FM%) differed between playing positions (p < 0.001; η2 = 0.107). Post-hoc comparisons showed that, within senior handball players, pivot players were 6.46 cm (p = 0.009) taller than wing players and heavier than goalkeepers (12.43 kg, p = 0.004), backcourts (13.30 kg, p < 0.001) and wings (17.83 kg, p < 0.001). Moreover, pivots had a greater BMI than goalkeepers (2.3 kg/m2, p = 0.003), backcourts (2.62 kg/m2, p < 0.001), and wings (3.07 kg/m2, p < 0.001), while FM% was significantly higher in pivots compared to wings (4.32%, p = 0.010). Taking into consideration playing positions and age, the main effects were also observed for squat jump height, countermovement jump height, end-running speed, and VO2max (all p < 0.001; η2 = 0.017 to 0.091). Both morphological and performance characteristics clearly differ across playing positions and age categories, which should be a valuable guide for coaches to develop position-specific talent identification programs and training plans.

Abstract:
Meteorological variables, phenology, plant health and crop management, soil physical and chemical properties, water and energy balances as well as variables related to economics, logistics and monitoring processes, among others, create complexity in the management of irrigation, which make it difficult to be administered conceptual or empirical models. Also, physico-mathematical modelsdescribing isolated phenomena cannot cover the overall complexity of the problem. This can be seen, in practice, by the gradual growth of factors which threaten the sustainability of irrigation enterprise. Currently, the advent of geotechnology application in agriculture and its integration with weather information in Geographic Information System (GIS) environments has make possible a more detailed support for irrigation management and planning. The objective of this study therefore was to organize and develop a geo-relational database with information from 30 pivots located in Cruz Alta, RS, Brazil, to further establish the usefulness of GIS in irrigation management. Data base preparation took place in two stages: (i) acquisition, georeferencing, image vectorization, snipping and calculation of vegetation indices relating to 107 images from Landsat5/TM satellite; and (2) creation of geo-related tables for each pivot containing information obtained from fieldsand weather stations in the region. Besides statistical analysis of NDVI values of pixels (picture elements) from each pivot, informationon crop type, planting date, phenological stages, soil type, evapotranspiration and weather data were also included in the database. Image processing, calculations and statistical analyzes, as well as mapping were done using SPRING software. Thus, a geographical database capable of integrating field information with those obtained by remote sensing was created and mapping of the distribution of key crop variables enabled better visualization of the dynamics of processes in progress, thus enabling comprehensive technical background for decision making with respect to planning and management of production systems in irrigated agriculture.

Abstract:
Background: Pivot shift test results have demonstrated widely inconsistent sensitivities when used on awake clinic patients. We believe the painful valgus force applied during traditional pivot shift techniques is the primary culprit and can be circumvented with our novel examination technique. Indications: The reason for publishing this examination technique is to maximize the sensitivity and accuracy of the pivot shift examination in the awake patient. Technique Description: Four major modifications of Ronald Losee’s original valgus-based examination technique are introduced. These are the 4 general modifications: minimizing the sagittal plane arc of motion, avoiding applying valgus force to the knee, application of gentle anteriorly directed force to the lateral tibia, and performing the examination on the patient’s noninjured knee first. We also provide detailed description of the hand placement during the Albright-Losee pivot shift test. (1) Once the patient is relaxed, the examiner’s hands are placed as follows: (1) the ulnar side of the examiner’s thumb is applied to the posterior aspect of the fibular head. The fingers are placed above the patella on the distal femur as shown in the video. (2) With the examiner’s hands in the correct position, the knee is flexed to 20° to 30°. One-to-3 pounds of anterior translatory force is then applied by the side of the thumb to the fibular head while the knee is taken slowly toward extension. Pathological anterior tibial translation can be expected to begin in a 20° to 30° range short of the patient’s complete knee extension. The examiner must be conscious not to provide any valgus or additional internal or external rotation of the leg. Results: This examination is useful for reproducing the subluxation phenomenon in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)-deficient knees. Our work has shown that these modifications yield an accuracy of 95.51% and a sensitivity of 94.7% in 353 knees examined by 71 clinicians. Discussion/Conclusion: The Albright-Losee pivot shift test is an easy to perform, highly sensitive, and highly specific test. In our recently submitted American Journal of Sports Medicine manuscript, the Albright-Losee pivot shift test suggested to be of greater value than Lachman test. Abstract:
AbstractInternalising disability management (DM) processes into an organisation needs careful planning and preparation particularly where the existing practice is to outsource DM services and supports to third-party providers. By using an action research methodology, the implementation process of an early intervention and rehabilitation pilot project in a large North American multisite health provider was tracked and monitored. An action researcher, who was the staff member responsible for line managing the DM pilot, kept an action research journal in which the actions taken, outcomes achieved, issues arising, insight gained and successful responses were regularly recorded over the initial phase of the pilot project. Organisational impact indicators for the pilot project were very positive. A content analysis of the action research journal revealed key components in a successful company DM program, the challenges faced when introducing a new program where pre-existing programs and policies exist, challenges arising from project implementation and mechanisms and strategies that worked well. The action research approach provided a useful insight into the day-to-day issues to be addressed when internalising DM into a large multisite organisation.

This study evaluates the formation and removal of DBPs along with precursors in a pilot-scale treatment plant employing conventional treatment processes (coagulation/ sedimentation/filtration), ozonation and granular activated carbon (GAC) treatment with three EBCT (10 min, 15 min, 20 min) and three types of GACs (coal-based F400, coal-based SLC, coconut-based SLC-2000). Pilot-scale study suggested that the GAC adsorber demanded more than EBCT 15 min for DBPs removal and exhibited excellent performance for HAA removal. During approximate a one-year pilot scale evaluation for ozone/GAC processes, as high efficiency of removal was continued, exchange cycle and regeneration life of GAC need to be decided through longer operation.

Abstract:
Phrase table combination in pivot approaches can be an effective method to deal with low-resource language pairs. The common practice to generate phrase tables in pivot approaches is to use standard symmetrization, i.e., grow-diag-final-and. Although some researchers found that the use of non-standard symmetrization could improve bilingual evaluation understudy (BLEU) scores, the use of non-standard symmetrization has not been commonly employed in pivot approaches. In this study, we propose a strategy that uses the non-standard symmetrization of word alignment in phrase table combination. The appropriate symmetrization is selected based on the highest BLEU scores in each direct translation of source–target, source–pivot, and pivot–target of Kazakh–English (Kk–En) and Japanese–Indonesian (Ja–Id). Our experiments show that our proposed strategy outperforms the direct translation in Kk–En with absolute improvements of 0.35 (a 11.3% relative improvement) and 0.22 (a 6.4% relative improvement) BLEU points for 3-gram and 5-gram, respectively. The proposed strategy shows an absolute gain of up to 0.11 (a 0.9% relative improvement) BLEU points compared to direct translation for 3-gram in Ja–Id. Our proposed strategy using a small phrase table obtains better BLEU scores than a strategy using a large phrase table. The size of the target monolingual and feature function weight of the language model (LM) could reduce perplexity scores.

Measurements of nitrous oxide were made at pilot- and full-scale plants to evaluate greenhouse gas emissions from one-step partial nitritation/anammox processes applied in moving bed biofilm reactors treating reject water. It was found that 0.51–1.29% and 0.35–1.33% of the total nitrogen loads in the pilot- and full-scale reactor, respectively, were emitted as nitrous oxide. Between 80 and 90% of nitrous oxide emissions were in gaseous form and the rest amount was found in the reactor effluent; over 90% of nitrous oxide emissions occurred in the aerated period and less than 8% in the non-aerated period in the full-scale study. Nitrous oxide productions/consumptions were closely related to aeration and the nitrogen loads applied in the system.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to provide a brief review of existing writing research methodologies, describe a new methodology in the investigation of writing, and demonstrate how this new methodology can be used in a pilot study to investigate the use of writing during problem solving. Our new methodology, TRAKTEXT, makes use of eye-tracking technology, which provides continuous measures of processing time, attention, and effort; does not disrupt the writer from the main task; produces data reflecting attentional shifts in periods of time as short as 100 milliseconds; can pinpoint text production or revision at the word level; and provides a more natural way of examining writing behaviors. In our exploratory study, we identified six unique writing behaviors. Results from the pilot study showed that writers who experienced a change in knowledge during problem solving demonstrated different writing behaviors from writers who did not experience a change in knowledge. Although TRAKTEXT provides several advantages over existing writing research methodologies, there are some components of writing (e.g. planning) that must be inferred from processing time and cognitive effort measures. Future iterations of TRAKTEXT may resolve these issues.

Abstract:
Each year our Clinical and Translational Science Award pilot projects program awards approximately $500,000 in translational pilot funding to advance health in South Texas. We identified needs to improve the timeliness, transparency, and efficiency of the review process by surveying applicants. Lean six sigma methodologies, following a “Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control” approach, were used to streamline the pilot project application and review by identifying and removing bottlenecks from process flows. We evaluated the impact of our reorganized review process by surveying applicants and reviewers. Process mapping identified pilot project review as the main source of delay, leading to the implementation of a study section-style review mechanism. After one cycle, 90.3% of pilot applicants and 100% of reviewers were highly satisfied with the new processes and time to award notice was reduced by 2 months. All reviewers familiar with both review processes preferred the study section. We demonstrated how lean six sigma, a methodology not commonly applied in research administration, can be used to evaluate processes in translational science in academic health centers. Through our efforts, we were able to improve timeliness, transparency, and efficiency of the review process.

Abstract:
This preliminary study aimed to understand the effects of an autonomous mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) on mindlessness propensities: rumination, automatic pilot functioning, and attentional distractibility. The ecological momentary assessment was completed by community participants assigned to two nonrandomized groups: an experimental group (n = 45) that practiced 20-minute daily mindfulness meditation for 42 days and a control group (n = 44) that was on the waiting list for the MBI. All participants completed a self-assessment on rumination and mindlessness propensities twice a day. The MBI led to a favorable gradual decrease in automatic pilot functioning and attentional distractibility. Rumination evolved in three stages: a rapid decrease during the first week, a stabilization phase between the 10th and 30th days, and an additional decrease after 30 days of practice. This innovative study provides a promising perspective regarding rumination, automatic pilot functioning, and attentional distractibility dynamic trajectories over the course of an MBI.

We present the framework of a new mathematical model to account for the curl of a curling rock. The model is based upon two physical processes: a brief pivot of the rock around a point directly beneath the contact annulus, followed by a longer slide. The model predictions agree with observed curl distances on pebbled ice. The model also gives a weak dependence of the curl distance on the rate of rotation of the rock, in agreement with observations. We suggest possible physical mechanisms to initiate these two processes.

Treatment has been individualized and more grounded in the model of informed consent, more referrals to the gender clinics and gender teams has been recorded, and the ICD-11 finally removed gender dysphoria from the chapter on mental disorders to a separate chapter on sexual health. Objective. Having in mind these changes and the preparation for the upcoming implementation of ICD-11, we can expect more transgender patients in primary, secondary and tertiary health care. Therefore we conducted this research aiming to assess level of knowledge and experiences of health providers on working with transgender patients. Method of work. We used qualitative methodology and online survey created for this research. The sample is convenient. Results. Final sample consists of 65 health providers. Data indicates relatively low level of knowledge on different aspects of gender affirmation process, but also high level of interest in additional professional training in this area. Conclusion. Data indicates the need for additional training of health providers on working with transgender people during regular medical education and additional professional trainings. Our data can be used as a basis for planning of various trainings and for future research.

Abstract:
Summary Enhanced-oil-recovery (EOR) implementation is complex, and successful applications need to be tailored to each specific reservoir. Therefore, a systematic staged evaluation and development process is required to screen, evaluate, pilot test, and apply EOR processes for particular applications. Pilot testing can play a key role in this process. Before field testing, pilot objectives need to be clearly defined and well spacing, pattern configuration, and injectant volumes determined. This paper outlines a staged approach to EOR evaluation and focuses specifically on pilot testing best practices. These best practices were derived from ExxonMobil's extensive piloting experience, which includes more than 50 field pilot tests covering the full range of EOR processes. Topics covered include: (1) determining whether a pilot is needed and defining pilot objectives, (2) considerations for successful pilot design, (3) types of pilots and their advantages and disadvantages, (4) tools and techniques for assessment of key reservoir mechanisms, and (5) minimizing uncertainty in pilot interpretation. Key issues that are often addressed by pilots are discussed, including areal sweep and conformance, gravity override, viscous fingering, and loss of mobility control. Also included are aspects of instrumentation and measurements in pilot injection, production, and monitoring wells. Several ExxonMobil piloting examples are used to illustrate the best practices, including a single-well injectivity test, an unconfined pilot with observation wells, a small-scale confined pilot, and a large-scale multipattern pilot.
