Full textThe Standard Model of particle physics represents the culmination of human understanding in terms of the fundamental building blocks of the universe and how they interact at a fundamental level. Yet, it is still missing several pieces such as solutions for the gauge hierarchy problem, and the mechanisms behind neutrino masses and dark matter candidates, all of which require new physics and Beyond Standard Model (BSM) theories. Pushing those frontiers implies constant improvements both in the experimental capabilities and theoretical understanding of the High-Energy Particle Physics (HEPP) scientific community. While the last breakthrough on this front was arguably one decade ago with thediscovery of the Higgs boson, those last 10 years brought explosive growth in terms of technological development in scientific computation, both on the hardware and software side. Machine Learning (ML) methods have seen widespread adoption and success across many fields, aided by the increasingly better performing Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) hardware acceleration. This Ph.D. research aims to study the potential effectiveness of applying Neural Network (NN) implementations to improve different areas of HEPP. On the detector side, I focused on evaluating the feasibility of hardware-level trigger for the newly installed ATLAS New Small Wheel (NSW) end-cap muon detector. The Trigger Processor (TP) operates in-situ on Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) hardware within a 200 ns time budget allowed for making a Level-0 (L0) trigger decision. Those are very stringent requirements and considering how resource-hungry NN-inference is, the model was designed specifically to mitigate those inherent limitations. In the end, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) approach was chosen to interpret hits from the NSW’s eight MicroMegas (MM) detector planes and trained to output quantities related to the likelihood for a muon track to originate from the interaction point (IP). The second main topic of this thesis involves the exploration of unsupervised learning as a means to model-agnostic BSM searches. Provided access to data generated by well-understood SM processes, a NN is trained to compress the events into a lower-dimensional representation and use it to reconstruct the original input. This type of model is called Autoencoder (AE), and a high error of an event’s reconstruction is a potential indicator that the event is not partof the same distribution as the training data, namely SM data. Combining such a model with NN-based density estimation results in an ensemble called Probabilistic Autoencoder (PAE) and this represented the central technique employed in this research. The PAE was tested as a potential tool for identifying new physics in a model-independent way in the context of jet physics and showed promising results

Full textOceanic Anoxic Events (OAE) are brief and extreme events that mostly occurred during the Cretaceous and are defined by the burial of massive amounts of organic carbon. These events have been intensely investigated in the last 40 years but the mechanism that triggered OAEs remains problematic. In order to better constrain what causes these events, we realised a complete geochemical study (major and trace elements, isotopic compositions of Nf and Hf) of various sedimentary fractions (detrital and authigenic) for marine sediments associated with the Cenomanian-Turonian boundary event or OAE2 (93.5 Ma). We focused our study on two marine sections that represent different depositional settings : a shallow marine setting, close to the continental shelf (Taghazoute, Morocco) and a abyssal marine section (DSDP Site 367, Cape-Verde), far from the African shelf. The remarkable stability of the Nd-Hf decoupling in both sections indicates no obvious change of continental weathering approaching OAE2. Our conclusions diverge from the hypothesis that proposes an higher nutrient input through an enhanced continental weathering as a triggering mechanism of OAEs. However, Nd isotopic compositions of authigenic fractions measured at Site 367, interpreted as past oceanic composition, exhibit a positive isotopic excursion and indicate a magmatic contribution in the deep Atlantic Ocean during OAE2. These new data are consistent with previous isotopic studies and support the role of Large Igneous Province (in our case, the Caribbean Plateau) as nutrient provider and triggering mechanism of anoxic events. The combined study of rare earth elements (REE) and Nd isotopic compositions of authigenic fractions recovered by leaching demonstrates the incorporation of detrital material in authigenic fractions in shallow marine settings. These new results challenge the traditional belief that authigenic material always records an untouched seawater composition. Finally, the extensive study of trace element concentrations of these same fractions demonstrated the strong impact of sample lithology on their trace element content. Our study also questions the relevance of sequential leaching methods that facilitate external contamination when sediments are submitted to repeated leaching steps

Full textOur research focuses on the entrepreneurial process and more precisely on the trigger phase. We take our definition of the trigger phase from Bruyat's (1993) model: the individual seriously considers the opportunity to start a business; he devotes time and resources to his project, he acts upon this intention. In order to model this trigger we use two main ideas (intention and displacement) as well as the following researchers' work: Shapero et Sokol (1982), Ajzen (1991) and Kreuger and Carsrud (1993). We study the case of French engineers, our starting point is a database initiated by Fayolle (1996). We focus on two groups of engineers in particular. The first group of engineers did not become entrepreneurs but had the short-term objective to start a business at the time of the study. The second group was made up of engineers who did not become entrepreneurs and who never wanted to. There are two steps in our methodology: firstly a quantitative investigation, and secondly a qualitative study. We test the two trigger antecedents that we retained in our conceptual model. We also identify eight career paths. We then look more closely into each career path through semi-directive interviews. This leads us to consider the trigger, not only in terms of pre-identified variables but in a more general way. Two determining dimensions become clear. Firstly, we notice that the trigger processes evolve differently over time. Secondly, the intensity and consequences of displacements may be perceived in different ways by individuals. This leads us to propose a cartography which enables to identify four trigger phase processes

Full textThe aim of the thesis is to explain why a venture capital firm choses to open out to foreign country or to reinforce its presence abroad. The model of internationalization is based on three articulations. The first one is the activity-differential which is the gap between what is required and what is acquired. It begins with a dissatisfaction that will generate a reaction of the venture capital fire. A failure in the skills of the venture capital firm and or in the conditions of the environment invevitably brings an inbalance of the inputs outputs or a lack of their level. The required level of the activity is a ideal combinaison of inputs and outputs which takes into account the potential of the environment and the venture capital firm. The second one is the country-diversity. The needs of the venture capital firm, which are tied with the limits of the original environment, lead the venture capital firm to an opening on foreign countries only if the country-diversity exists. The concept of country-diversity puts the differences and synergies existing between two environments forward, differences and synergies however relativised in regard to the needs and the caracteristics of the venture capital firm. The relative profil is more important that the objective one. When the environments present intrinsec limits, the country-diversity is compensatory. When the limits are relative ones, the county-diversity is synergetic. The third one is set up on the preferences and power. The rationality, which the activity-differential and the country-diversity underlie, is contested by the filter that the preferences of those who have the power constitute. The limited knowledge of the human resources, their preferences, their reluctance to change, their backgrounds can generate some negative behaviours against the solution required by the activity-differential and the country-diversity

Full textPreventive management of natural and technological hazards is a major issue for state authorities, in regards to the people, property and the environment or in regards to the cost represented by the realization of such risks. Therefore, policy makers legally bound to protect these interests are required to initiate a preventive public action after evaluating and qualifying the risks. The level of hazard and the appropriateness and proportionality of preventive measures will be determined within a complex decision-making process. The policymakers then strive to reach the best possible compromise between freedom and security objectives within the framework of a delicate cost/benefit analysis. The law attempts to regulate this decision-making process by leaving a large and necessary margin of discretion to the public policy makers in determining the acceptability of the risk. This thesis will explore the process to reach this compromise, and in particular how the law governs it, manages this delicate issue and potentially controls the endorsed decisions

Full textThe western part of the Corinth Rift in Greece is opening at about 15 mm per year, generating one of the highest deformation rates in the world, some destructive earthquakes of magnitude M>6 per decade, and high microseismic activity irregular in space and time. In order to better understand the mechanisms related to this crustal deformation and to specify the major active structures, this research work makes use of the seismological database of the Corinth Rift Laboratory from 2000 to 2015 by finely analyzing microearthquakes and their spatio-temporal evolution. The global relocation of the seismic sources and their classification into multiplets enable to refine the geometry of the faults and to identify different mechanical behaviors. The western zone, in the middle of the gulf, is affected by fluctuations of fluid pore pressures in a geological layer, resulting in microseismic swarm migrations at a velocity of about 50 m per day. The deep multiplets of the central part, near the northern coast, are persistent and appear to be triggered by episodes of slow aseismic slip along an immature detachment, which can reach the ductile crust. The low percentage of dynamic triggering by passing seismic waves suggests that the overall state of the fault system is not at the critical breaking point. The magnitude of earthquakes is correlated with the initial impulsiveness of the rupture. These results specify the dynamics of the rift deformation, the seismic-aseismic interactions, and will make possible the improvement of the seismic hazard models of the region
