Full text
Abstract:
This timely book provides a thorough analysis of contemporary youth employment entry route schemes in the U.K.Drawing on a Post-Foucauldian approach, the book providesa critical interrogation of the policy contexts governing a range of youth employment training schemes in four diverse regional economies within England and Scotland, including employability training, enterprise training, internships and volunteering. Supplemented with new ethnographic case study research conducted by the authors, the book’s chaptersexplore each training scheme in turn through the eyes of regional policy makers, trainers, work experience providers and young people. The authors demonstrate how neoliberal beliefs and practices, such as individualisation, responsibilisation, flexibility and resilience to risk are thoroughly implicated in youth employment policy and training practice. The book also makes obvious how the constraints faced by, and opportunities permitted to, different young people are shaped by the broad and complex interplay of national and regional historical events, economic processes and social structures. These function not only to reproduce but often to further retrench social inequalities, positions of liminality and vulnerability to risk for young people trying to get in and get on in good quality work across the different regional economies of the U.K.

Full text
Abstract:
The dynamic model with time‐additive utility is defined. The intertemporal budget constraint is explained. SDF processes are defined in terms of a martingale property. There is a strictly positive SDF process if and only if there are no arbitrage opportunities. Dynamic complete markets are explained. The difference between the price of an asset and its value calculated from an SDF process is called a bubble. There is no bubble if a transversality condition is satisfied. Some constraints on trading strategies are needed to rule out Ponzi schemes. SDF processes are derived for nominal asset prices and for asset prices denominated in a foreign currency.

Full text
Abstract:
It has been recognized that the sensorimotor approach needs to be extended to account for not only the pragmatic aspects of perception but also the subjective phenomenology that characterizes experiences of the world and the self. In this chapter, the notion is proposed that sensorimotor agency can serve as the basis for a non-representational, world-involving theory of how agents perceive themselves as being the authors and in control of their actions. Both intentional and movement-related aspects in the phenomenology of agency experience are linked to processes of sensorimotor scheme selection and enactment in a self-sustaining network of interdependent sensorimotor schemes. The proposal is contrasted with traditional computational models in the context of various cases of pathological agency experience, and the ontological status of the sense of agency it implies is clarified in comparison with philosophical alternatives that deny its distinct experiential character.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses how to maximize the quality of life for dying patients. It illustrates the overall schema that the book follows, which emphasizes how an organized structure is useful to define the mechanics and fundamentals of hospice care and the overall goal of making high-quality interdisciplinary care during the last phase of life the standard. Therefore, the full range of evaluation, assessment, and interventions proposed may need to be changed to home in on the patient’s and family’s highest priorities to meet their most pressing needs before death. At admission, the likely longevity of the patient (i.e., prognosis) needs to be well considered so that the issues and goals elaborated in this guide might be realistically tailored to each patient’s needs and attainable goals. The most productive and “patient-centric” place to start, maintain, and deepen a trust-based relationship is with the question, “What matters most?”

Succi, Sauro. Lattice Relaxation Schemes. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199592357.003.0014.

Full text
Abstract:
In Chapter 13, it was shown that the complexity of the LBE collision operator can be cut down dramatically by formulating discrete versions with prescribed local equilibria. In this chapter, the process is taken one step further by presenting a minimal formulation whereby the collision matrix is reduced to the identity, upfronted by a single relaxation parameter, fixing the viscosity of the lattice fluid. The idea is patterned after the celebrated Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook (BGK) model Boltzmann introduced in continuum kinetic theory as early as 1954. The second part of the chapter describes the comeback of the early LBE in optimized multi-relaxation form, as well as few recent variants hereof.

Billing, Gert D., ed. The Quantum Classical Theory. Oxford University Press, 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195146196.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Over a period of fifty years, the quantum-classical or semi-classical theories have been among the most popular for calculations of rates and cross sections for many dynamical processes: energy transfer, chemical reactions, photodissociation, surface dynamics, reactions in clusters and solutions, etc. These processes are important in the simulation of kinetics of processes in plasma chemistry, chemical reactors, chemical or gas lasers, atmospheric and interstellar chemistry, as well as various industrial processes. This book gives an overview of quantum-classical methods that are currently used for a theoretical description of these molecular processes. It gives the theoretical background for the derivation of the theories from first principles. Enough details are provided to allow numerical implementation of the methods. The book gives the necessary background for understanding the approximations behind the methods and the working schemes for treating energy transfer processes from diatomic to polyatomic molecules, reactions at surfaces, non-adiabatic processes, and chemical reactions.

Mehling, Michael. Legal Frameworks for Linking National Emissions Trading Systems. Edited by Kevin R. Gray, Richard Tarasofsky, and Cinnamon Carlarne. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780199684601.003.0013.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the linking of emissions trading regimes for climate change governance. It also assesses the legal frameworks for linking as the process assumes varying degrees of formality, with implications for the legal nature and the procedural requirements of adoption. Linkage results in an enlarged market, promising greater diversity of abatement costs and thus more efficient achievement of climate change mitigation objectives. Linkage is also credited with promoting liquidity and reduced price volatility in the carbon market, helping reduce the likelihood of manipulation and abuse. These results lead to operation in a multilayered framework of established rules, principles, and procedures constituting the legal order. Carbon markets are highly regulated, and this relevance of norms also extends to a linkage between such markets. The chapter analyses past and current trading schemes as a case study, such as the European Union Emission Trading Scheme, the biggest greenhouse gas emissions trading scheme.

Gray, Barbara, and Jill Purdy. Collaborative Governance. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198782841.003.0009.

Full text
Abstract:
Governance involves the processes of managing the delivery of public goods. As problems increase in complexity, governments need capabilities that lie beyond the scope of their agencies. Collaborative governance processes involve nongovernmental stakeholders in the work of government using deliberative processes designed to find consensus on complex public issues. This creates a more comprehensive approach to planning, policy, and implementation than government could achieve on its own. The chapter examines various forms of collaborative governance such as transnational policy regimes (like the Kyoto Protocol), certification schemes (such as the Soya Roundtable), public–private partnerships, co-management of natural resources and mandated collaboration. Numerous examples reveal barriers, tensions, structural features, leadership roles, and frameworks for evaluating the success of collaborative governance arrangements.

Simon, Morris. 14 Redress. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780199688753.003.0014.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter concerns the seven principal aspects of redress under the Financial Services and Markets Act (FSMA) 2000. Redress may be due when the primary goal of consumer protection has failed to attain its objective and a customer suffers loss or inconvenience. This chapter considers the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) requirements for firms with regard to complaint handling. It also looks at the process by which disputes between retail customers and regulated firms can be brought to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) and the way in which the FOS will decide a dispute. The process by which a designated consumer body can bring complaints to the FCA regarding consumer interests, and the role of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), are explained. Finally, the role of consumer redress schemes, restitution orders, and other circumstances where consumers may obtain redress are explained.
