Ferns, Norman Francis. "Metrics for Markov decision processes." Thesis, McGill University, 2003. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=80263.

Abstract:
We present a class of metrics, defined on the state space of a finite Markov decision process (MDP), each of which is sound with respect to stochastic bisimulation, a notion of MDP state equivalence derived from the theory of concurrent processes. Such metrics are based on similar metrics developed in the context of labelled Markov processes, and like those, are suitable for state space aggregation. Furthermore, we restrict our attention to a subset of this class that is appropriate for certain reinforcement learning (RL) tasks, specifically, infinite horizon tasks with an expected total discounted reward optimality criterion. Given such an RL metric, we provide bounds relating it to the optimal value function of the original MDP as well as to the value function of the aggregate MDP. Finally, we present an algorithm for calculating such a metric up to a prescribed degree of accuracy and some empirical results.

Abstract:
In recent years, various metrics have been developed for measuring the similarity of states in probabilistic transition systems (Desharnais et al., 1999; van Breugel & Worrell, 2001a). In the context of Markov decision processes, we have devised metrics providing a robust quantitative analogue of bisimulation. Most importantly, the metric distances can be used to bound the differences in the optimal value function that is integral to reinforcement learning (Ferns et al. 2004; 2005). More recently, we have discovered an efficient algorithm to calculate distances in the case of finite systems (Ferns et al., 2006). In this thesis, we seek to properly extend state-similarity metrics to Markov decision processes with continuous state spaces both in theory and in practice. In particular, we provide the first distance-estimation scheme for metrics based on bisimulation for continuous probabilistic transition systems. Our work, based on statistical sampling and infinite dimensional linear programming, is a crucial first step in real-world planning; many practical problems are continuous in nature, e.g. robot navigation, and often a parametric model or crude finite approximation does not suffice. State-similarity metrics allow us to reason about the quality of replacing one model with another. In practice, they can be used directly to aggregate states.

Abstract:
Software metrics plays an important role in measuring attributes that are critical to the success of a software project. Measurement of these attributes helps to make the characteristics and relationships between the attributes clearer. This in turn supports informed decision making. The field of software engineering is affected by infrequent, incomplete and inconsistent measurements. Software testing is an integral part of software development, providing opportunities for measurement of process attributes. The measurement of software testing process attributes enables the management to have better insight in to the software testing process. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the metric support for software test planning and test design processes. The study comprises of an extensive literature study and follows a methodical approach. This approach consists of two steps. The first step comprises of analyzing key phases in software testing life cycle, inputs required for starting the software test planning and design processes and metrics indicating the end of software test planning and test design processes. After establishing a basic understanding of the related concepts, the second step identifies the attributes of software test planning and test design processes including metric support for each of the identified attributes. The results of the literature survey showed that there are a number of different measurable attributes for software test planning and test design processes. The study partitioned these attributes in multiple categories for software test planning and test design processes. For each of these attributes, different existing measurements are studied. A consolidation of these measurements is presented in this thesis which is intended to provide an opportunity for management to consider improvement in these processes.

Abstract:
The petroleum industry is capital intensive and oil companies are dependent on stable and reliable production. Costs in early project phases must be balanced by revenue in production phases. Improving performance to ensure positive cash flow and competitiveness in the market is imperative. An understanding of past performance is important when the task at hand is improving future performance. These systems have the objective to improve operational performance by facilitating for well-informed, proportionate and timely decisions. This is done through collecting and validating data, developing it to tangible information and through appropriate presentation. The thesis argues that a Performance Monitoring System can provide opportunities for increased production and therefore revenue, through a reduction of production losses and a higher overall facility output. An explorative literature review in Operations management, Systems Engineering, Petroleum- Production, and industry experiences is carried out to create a multidisciplinary and integrated theoretical framework. This is synthesised in criteria for system structure, data management and indicators, and can be used to design and assess Performance Monitoring Systems. The multi-national oil-company Teekay Petrojarl is used as a case where empirical data from two production units illustrate practical execution of performance monitoring in the Norwegian offshore oil and gas industry. An emphasis is given on loss reporting and indicators. The criteria are used to assess the system to reveal strengths and weaknesses, and to serve as a basis for improvement suggestions both for the criteria and for the company.Integrating internal and external stakeholder interests in the Performance Monitoring System shows as important. Developing a policy that formalises roles, responsibilities and processes is needed for the system to function optimally. The company is advised to revise its system according to this. Management of data is a recurring issue in the industry and the case confirms this impression. Data is available and accurate, but an overall plan for the intent and objective of collecting and processing it is missing. The company should standardise reporting formats and tags to facilitate for internal benchmarking. Increasing visibility of loss causes in the presentation-end could increase system quality. The thesis increases knowledge on how Performance Monitoring Systems ideally should be structured and establishes a framework to be used in design an assessment of such systems. It also contributes to Teekay Petrojarl by giving important advise on how to improve their system. Further development of the criteria can provide a more robust framework that can improve the practical execution of performance monitoring in offshore oil and gas production.

Abstract:
Corporate Performance Management (CPM) is currently one of the most developing branches of informatics due to the fact that it is a tool that allows managers to effectively manage their company and thereby increase its competitiveness in the market. This thesis focuses on the individual elements of the CPM, particularly on the managerial methods, metrics and business processes, which are generally characterized first and then applied to business organizations that operate in the area of retailing. There is also a fourth CPM element - CPM applications, but a detailed description is not covered by this work. The aim of this thesis is mainly to define the basic (core) processes in retailing and describe their characteristics using informatics approaches. Each process is then assigned to managerial methods that can be used in evaluating the performance of these processes and to specific examples of metrics for which appropriate dimensions are further defined. The main contribution of this work is the analysis of processes in the retailing industry, using methods and approaches used in informatics - characteristics such as purpose of the process, events that trigger the process, inputs and outputs of the process and metrics, which are assigned to the corresponding dimensions, are defined for each process.

Razroev, Stanislav. "AUTOMATED OPTIMAL FORECASTING OF UNIVARIATE MONITORING PROCESSES : Employing a novel optimal forecast methodology to define four classes of forecast approaches and testing them on real-life monitoring processes." Abstract:
This work aims to explore practical one-step-ahead forecasting of structurally changing data, an unstable behaviour, that real-life data connected to human activity often exhibit. This setting can be characterized as monitoring process. Various forecast models, methods and approaches can range from being simple and computationally "cheap" to very sophisticated and computationally "expensive". Moreover, different forecast methods handle different data-patterns and structural changes differently: for some particular data types or data intervals some particular forecast methods are better than the others, something that is usually not known beforehand. This raises a question: "Can one design a forecast procedure, that effectively and optimally switches between various forecast methods, adapting the forecast methods usage to the changes in the incoming data flow?" The thesis answers this question by introducing optimality concept, that allows optimal switching between simultaneously executed forecast methods, thus "tailoring" forecast methods to the changes in the data. It is also shown, how another forecast approach: combinational forecasting, where forecast methods are combined using weighted average, can be utilized by optimality principle and can therefore benefit from it. Thus, four classes of forecast results can be considered and compared: basic forecast methods, basic optimality, combinational forecasting, and combinational optimality. The thesis shows, that the usage of optimality gives results, where most of the time optimality is no worse or better than the best of forecast methods, that optimality is based on. Optimality reduces also scattering from multitude of various forecast suggestions to a single number or only a few numbers (in a controllable fashion). Optimality gives additionally lower bound for optimal forecasting: the hypothetically best achievable forecast result. The main conclusion is that optimality approach makes more or less obsolete other traditional ways of treating the monitoring processes: trying to find the single best forecast method for some structurally changing data. This search still can be sought, of course, but it is best done within optimality approach as its innate component. All this makes the proposed optimality approach for forecasting purposes a valid "representative" of a more broad ensemble approach (which likewise motivated development of now popular Ensemble Learning concept as a valid part of Machine Learning framework).

Abstract:
The software process evaluation and improvement requests great effort of managers and developers, especially because obtaining data for decision support (about process evolution) is not a simple task. The software development, as any discipline of Engineering, needs measurement mechanisms, so that through an evaluation of its results, the process can be improved. But measurement can be a difficult task without the aid of methodologies or support tools. In this sense, this paper presents a model for software processes measurement, on the context of APSEE-Prosoft project. The model's objective is to provide support for the measurement in software processes, through the development and implantation of measurement programs, to aid managers in the accomplishment of activities such as planning, collecting and analysis of metrics in a software process. This paper combines aspects related to important areas of Software Engineering, as measurement, software process, process-centered engineering environment (PSEE), besides the use of formal methods for a definition and specification of a measurement model integrated to a PSEE.

Abstract:
On the road to success, companies need to fulfil their stakeholders’ expectations. On the road to business excellence, companies need to exceed these expectations. Oliver Wight Inc. has established a certification called Class A Business, which shows that a company is exceeding stakeholders’ expectations and that it performs in the upper quartile in its respective industry. The Class A Business certification is awarded, once a company fulfils a certification checklist with Class A Business criteria. To get to this point, a company can design their road to business excellence by following a specific set of nine Class A Behaviors. This study focuses on four of these behaviors, divided in three parts, and how they are implemented at a pharmaceutical packaging department at Roche in Kaiseraugst, Switzerland. In addition, through employee feedback potential areas of improvement are identified. For a company to understand how it is running, it has to understand its underlying processes. Once the processes are in place, a process-oriented way of thinking can change a company to make decisions based on process’ needs rather than on individual preferences. Business processes and their potential for continuous improvement were the first part of the study. The second part of the study investigated the communication of different functions in the packaging process and how the flow of information could be improved. In the third part, the usage of operational metrics in the packaging department is researched by a user feedback survey. An innovative way to visualize meeting conversations was developed in this study to make meetings more tangible for the reader. This is a newly developed and never before described method for business research colorfully showing interactions in meetings. The results are very intriguing. Simple thought business elements seem to pose larger hurdles than would be expected sometimes.

Abstract:
Informational privacy of individuals has significantly gained importance after information technology has become widely deployed. Data, once digitalised, can be copied, distributed, and long-term stored at negligible costs. This has dramatic consequences for individuals that leave traces in the form of personal data whenever they interact with information technology, for instance, computers and phones; or even when information technology is recording the personal data of aware or unaware individuals. The right of individuals for informational privacy, in particular to control the flow and use of their personal data, is easily undermined by those controlling the information technology. The objective of this thesis is to study the measurement of informational privacy with a particular focus on scenarios where an individual discloses personal data to a second party which uses this data for re-identifying the individual within a set of other individuals. We contribute with privacy metrics for several instances of this scenario in the publications included in this thesis, most notably one which adds a time dimension to the scenario for modelling the effects of the time passed between data disclosure and usage. The result is a new framework for inter-temporal privacy metrics.

The evolution of automation in recent years made possible the continuous monitoring of the processes of industrial plants. With this advance, the amount of information that automation systems are subjected to increased significantly. The alarms generated by the monitoring equipment are a major contributor to this increase, and the equipments are usually deployed in industrial plants without a formal methodology, which entails an increase in the number of alarms generated, thus overloading the alarm system and therefore the operators of such plants. In this context, the works of alarm management comes up with the objective of defining a formal methodology for installation of new equipment and detect problems in existing settings. This thesis aims to propose a set of metrics for the evaluation of alarm systems already deployed, so that you can identify the health of this system by analyzing the proposed indices and comparing them with parameters defined in the technical norms of alarm management. In addition, the metrics will track the work of alarm management, verifying if it is improving the quality of the alarm system. To validate the proposed metrics, data from actual process plants of the petrochemical industry were used

Gupta, Kishan. "Metric and non-metric inputs influence spatial and working memory processes of medial entorhinal neurons." Thesis, Boston University, 2013. https://hdl.handle.net/2144/12771.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University
The medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) contains spatial cell types including grid and head direction (HD) cells. Grid cells fire action potentials when animals pass through environmental locations that form vertices of tessellating triangles. HD cells fire when animals face a preferred direction along their azimuth. These cells have been widely studied for their potential metric role in spatial navigation, but considerably less is known about their non-metric functions. This thesis examines non-metric influences on the MEC during working memory maintenance, 'look-ahead' activity, and 'more familiar' or 'less familiar' environmental rotations. The first experiment tests the hypothesis that persistent spiking of MEC neurons could represent a sensory cue during a working memory task. Animals ran a T-Maze where an auditory stimulus cued rats to move toward left- or right-reward arms. Instead of the hypothesized increase in spike rate during the delay period between cue and reward, MEC spike rates were suppressed. Additionally, MEC ensemble firing at the choice point suggests that these cells encoded reward locations. This indicates the MEC displays forward activation of possible future locations ('look-ahead' activity). To model this experiment's look-ahead results, a recent model of goal-directed navigation was adapted to the previous T-Maze task. This adaptation trains a virtual rat to associate cues to reward cells and corresponding place cells, a difference from previous models where goal locations were not cueassociated. The rat reliably learns goal locations, performs look-ahead scans at the choice point, and simulated MEC activity decodes to reward locations, successfully modeling look-ahead behavior. The final experiment examines effects of environmental recency on spatial tuning of MEC neurons. Rats performed spatial alternation on a T-Maze rotated into 'more familiar' or 'less familiar' configurations as MEC units were recorded. Spatial cells oriented their firing fields in register with the T-Maze more often during less familiar rotations. This implies a shift in animals' reference frame with learned experience suggesting the MEC is comparing contexts in the same environment. In summary, these results highlight previously uninvestigated, non-metric influences over MEC activity with strong implications for goal-directed behavior and spatial navigation.

Abstract:
Software fault prediction (SFP) has an important role in the process of improving software product quality by identifying fault-prone modules. Constructing quality models includes a usage of metrics that describe real world entities defined by numbers or attributes. Examining the nature of machine learning (ML), researchers proposed its algorithms as suitable for fault prediction. Moreover, information that software metrics contain will be used as statistical data necessary to build models for a certain ML algorithm. One of the most used ML algorithms is a Bayesian network (BN), which is represented as a graph, with a set of variables and relations between them. This thesis will be focused on the usage of process and static code metrics with BN learners for SFP. First, we provided an informal review on non-static code metrics. Furthermore, we created models that contained different combinations of process and static code metrics, and then we used them to conduct an experiment. The results of the experiment were statistically analyzed using a non-parametric test, the Kruskal-Wallis test. The informal review reported that non-static code metrics are beneficial for the prediction process and its usage is highly recommended for industrial projects. Finally, experimental results did not provide a conclusion which process metric gives a statistically significant result; therefore, a further investigation is needed.

Abstract:
Informational privacy of individuals has significantly gained importance after information technology has become widely deployed. Data, once digitalised, can be copied and distributed at negligible costs. This has dramatic consequences for individuals that leave traces in form of personal data whenever they interact with information technology. The right of individuals for informational privacy, in particular to control the flow and use of their personal data, is easily undermined by those controlling the information technology. The objective of this thesis is the measurement of informational privacy with a particular focus on scenarios where an individual discloses personal data to a second party, the data controller, which uses this data for re-identifying the individual within a set of others, the population. Several instances of this scenario are discussed in the appended papers, most notably one which adds a time dimension to the scenario for modelling the effects of the time passed between data disclosure and usage. This extended scenario leads to a new framework for inter-temporal privacy metrics. The common dilemma of all privacy metrics is their dependence on the information available to the data controller. The same information may or may not be available to the individual and, as a consequence, the individual may be misguided in his decisions due to his limited access to the data controller’s information when using privacy metrics. The goal of this thesis is thus not only the specification of new privacy metrics, but also the contribution of ideas for mitigating this dilemma. However a solution will rather be a combination of technological, economical and legal means than a purely technical solution.

Tomusk, Erik-Arne. "Heterogeneous processor composition : metrics and methods." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/22076.

Full text
Abstract:
Heterogeneous processors intended for mobile devices are composed of a number of different CPU cores that enable the processor to optimize performance under strict power limits that vary over time. Design space exploration techniques can be used to discover a candidate set of potential cores that could be implemented on a heterogeneous processor. However, candidate sets contain far more cores than can feasibly be implemented. Heterogeneous processor composition therefore requires solutions to the selection problem and the evaluation problem. Cores must be selected from the candidate set, and these cores must be shown to be quantitatively superior to alternative selections. The qualitative criterion for a selection of cores is diversity. A diverse set of heterogeneous cores allows a processor to execute tasks with varying dynamic behaviors at a range of power and performance levels that are appropriate for conditions during runtime. This thesis presents a detailed description of the selection and evaluation problems, and establishes a theoretical framework for reasoning about the runtime behavior of power-limited, heterogeneous processors. The evaluation problem is specifically concerned with evaluating the collective attributes of selections of cores rather than evaluating the features of individual cores. A suite of metrics is defined to address the evaluation problem. The metrics quantify considerations that could otherwise only be evaluated subjectively. The selection problem is addressed with an iterative, diversity-preserving algorithm that emphasizes the flexibility available to programs at runtime. The algorithm includes facilities for guiding the selection process with information from an expert, when available. Three variations on the selection algorithm are defined. A thorough analysis of the proposed selection algorithm is presented using data from a large-scale simulation involving 33 benchmarks and 3000 core types. The three variations of the algorithm are compared to each other and to current, state-of-the-art selection techniques. The analysis serves as both an evaluation of the proposed algorithm as well as a case study of the metrics.

Abstract:
“Measurement is the first step that leads to control and eventually to improvement. If you can´t measure something, you can´t understand it. If you can´t understand it, you can´t control it. If you can´t control it, you can´t improve it.” – H. James Harrington
Is BIM- (Building Information Modeling) used in the most efficient and practical way in the infrastructure industry today? The difficulty in implementing BIM as a method throughout the process and organization in an industry that always relied on its traditions is one of the main subjects of the Swedish Transport Administration. Therefore they have elaborated a long-term plan with a primer objective that in the year 2015 have established a requirement that there future project shall require a certain involvement of BIM. What if there was a measurement tool that could evaluate all the aspects of a project using BIM as a tool and then compare it to other projects in purpose to value where in the organization, technology and process things could have been better. Wouldn’t the process and all aspects of it evolve a lot faster if conclusions could be drawn of the up- and downsides on earlier projects and experiences could be gained from other practices? In USA such a tool has been developed and named the VDC- (Virtual Design and Construction) Scorecard which was created by researchers working for CIFE (Center for Integrated Engineering) in Stanford University. With grander influence as a helping tool for that industry it´s in the authors interests to create a similar tool, but different in the way that it would be adapted to a particular part of the process; the projecting. This could later on be in great use for the consultant company to who the authors are collaborating with. The objective must be to create a measurement tool that in a neutral manner can value both the project in general and the importance of each aspect. By study how the VDC Scorecard was built and immerse into the general projecting process of infrastructure projects a fundament for this measurement tool will be built.

Abstract:
Context. Software Project management focuses on planning and executing the activities for developing software. Agile Software Project Management helps to plan shorter iterations and frequent changes to customer requirement. Developing the process flow metrics helps to monitor the process and to tune the process for the given context. Objectives. The main objectives in the thesis are to identify process flow metrics and frameworks that are suitable for measuring the process flow in Agile projects especially projects with significant dependence on hardware components. Apart from identified metrics from the literature, we identify the impact, challenges, and advantages of using agile models with the help of productivity and process flow metrics and implement them on a test phase project and compare the productivity of agile model with waterfall model. Methods. The thesis presents a two-step study. The first step was to perform a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and collect the metrics from the literature study that can be used for the comparison of the productivity of both the processes. The Second step was to conduct a case study at Volvo Cars to get us a better understanding the impact of the agile and how the process flow metrics can be used in real time for measuring and comparison.   Results. In the first step of SLR, 363 metrics that can be used by software teams have been identified of which 10 were suitable for the comparison of our current case study required by the second step of our thesis. In the second step, in the first iteration after the transition, an increase in productivity of 6.25% is achieved by the team following the agile process over the team following the traditional process. Several advantages and challenges faced during the transition have been identified which might have affected the achieved productivity. Conclusions. We conclude from the results achieved that metrics can be used as a tool to enhance the benefits of the Agile process. Process Flow metrics can be of good use to compare the difference of productivity between different processes and make improvements to the current processes. Use of process flow metrics increases the insight of all the team members on the progress of the project and guides them to enhance team performance and stay on track with the project schedule.

Abstract:
Injury risk reduction is an ever-evolving topic within an athletic environment. Consequences from an injury include participation time loss, financial, social, and personal costs. Coaching and medical staff strive to reduce the risk through various manners. Training load monitoring is one method that is utilized in injury risk reduction through global positioning systems (GPS) with statistical modeling. The purpose of this study was to investigate the external loads for training sessions and competition in starters versus non-starters; to determine if there were control chart violations associated with sustained injuries; and to determine whether in-season injuries were associate with one or more control chart violations. NCAA Division I female soccer players were recruited during the fall 2019 season. Participants were provided a STATSports GPS unit to wear during all practice and competition sessions to analyze the following variables: total distance, high metabolic load distance, sprints, accelerations, decelerations, and dynamic stress load (DSL). These variables were analyzed using statistical process control charts (SPC Charts) and Nelson Rules. Overall, there were 1,235 violations for the team, with the highest amount coming from DSL. Throughout the season, there were 16 time-loss injuries. Within the 3- and 7-day periods prior to injury, there were only two cases in which the injured athlete had more violations when compared to the team average. Therefore, SPC Charts were not a good indicator of injury risk prediction within this population. Future research includes reassessing these methods within a larger population and for a longer duration (i.e. several seasons).
Master of Science
Reducing the risk of injury in athletes is a focal point for many coaches, training, and medical staffs in collegiate athletics. The consequences of injury range from loss of playing time to financial and long-term health costs. Being able to reduce the risk of injuries not only has personal implications for the athlete but also relates to overall team success. Using global positioning systems (GPS) to track the amount of work done in training can possibly reduce injury risk. This study planned to investigate the workload in NCAA Division 1 collegiate female soccer athletes and if any injuries were sustained during both training and competition settings. The results suggest that statistical process control (SPC) charts and the Nelson Rules did not predict injury risk within this population. There is limited research that has used these tools. Future work can reassess these methods within larger collegiate athletic populations, over a longer period of time.

Otoom, Mwaffaq Naif. "Capacity Metric for Chip Heterogeneous Multiprocessors." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/26332.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary contribution of this thesis is the development of a new performance metric, Capacity, which evaluates the performance of Chip Heterogeneous Multiprocessors (CHMs) that process multiple heterogeneous channels. Performance metrics are required in order to evaluate any system, including computer systems. A lack of appropriate metrics can lead to ambiguous or incorrect results, something discovered while developing the secondary contribution of this thesis, that of workload modes for CHMs â or Workload Specific Processors (WSPs). For many decades, computer architects and designers have focused on techniques that reduce latency and increase throughput. The change in modern computer systems built around CHMs that process multi-channel communications in the service of single users calls this focus into question. Modern computer systems are expected to integrate tens to hundreds of processor cores onto single chips, often used in the service of single users, potentially as a way to access the Internet. Here, the design goal is to integrate as much functionality as possible during a given time window. Without the ability to correctly identify optimal designs, not only will the best performing designs not be found, but resources will be wasted and there will be a lack of insight to what leads to better performing designs. To address performance evaluation challenges of the next generation of computer systems, such as multicore computers inside of cell phones, we found that a structurally different metric is needed and proceeded to develop such a metric. In contrast to single-valued metrics, Capacity is a surface with dimensionality related to the number of input streams, or channels, processed by the CHM. We develop some fundamental Capacity curves in two dimensions and show how Capacity shapes reveal interaction of not only programs and data, but the interaction of multiple data streams as they compete for access to resources on a CHM as well. For the analysis of Capacity surface shapes, we propose the development of a demand characterization method in which its output is in the form of a surface. By overlaying demand surfaces over Capacity surfaces, we are able to identify when a system meets its demands and by how much. Using the Capacity metric, computer performance optimization is evaluated against workloads in the service of individual users instead of individual applications, aggregate applications, or parallel applications. Because throughput was originally derived by drawing analogies between processor design and pipelines in the automobile industry, we introduce our Capacity metric for CHMs by drawing an analogy to automobile production, signifying that Capacity is the successor to throughput. By developing our Capacity metric, we illustrate how and why different processor organizations cannot be understood as being better performers without both magnitude and shape analysis in contrast to other metrics, such as throughput, that consider only magnitude. In this work, we make the following major contributions: â ¢ Definition and development of the Capacity metric as a surface with dimensionality related to the number of input streams, or channels, processed by the CHM. â ¢ Techniques for analysis of the Capacity metric. Since the Capacity metric was developed out of necessity, while pursuing the development of WSPs, this work also makes the following minor contributions: â ¢ Definition and development of three foundations in order to establish an experimental foundation â a CHM model, a multimedia cell phone example, and a Workload Specific Processor (WSP). â ¢ Definition of Workload Modes, which was the original objective of this thesis. â ¢ Definition and comparison of two approaches to workload mode identification at run time; The Workload Classification Model (WCM) and another model that is based on Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). â ¢ Development of a foundation for analysis of the Capacity metric, so that the impact of architectural features in a CHM may be better understood. In order to do this, we develop a Demand Characterization Method (DCM) that characterizes the demand of a specific usage pattern in the form of a curve (or a surface in general). By doing this, we will be able to overlay demand curves over Capacity curves of different architectures to compare their performance and thus identify optimal performing designs.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with questions regarding quality assurance and software testing. The subject of its theoretical part is the specification of the general concept of quality, description of standards used in the field of software product quality evaluation and finally the evaluation of software development process itself. The thesis intends to introduce the theoretical framework of software quality assurance, especially the detailed analysis of the whole software testing branch. An added value to the theoretical part constitutes the characterization of procedural approach and selected methods used towards the improvement of processes. The practical part of the thesis comprises of the exemplification -- it shows the procedural approach at software quality management, applied to a selected IT company. The main aim of the practical part is to create a purposeful project for optimization of quality assurance and software testing processes. The core of the matter is to accomplish the process analysis of the present condition of software testing methodology. For the purpose of process analysis and optimization project, the models of key processes will be created; these processes will then be depicted based on defined pattern. The description of the state-of-the-art of software product quality assurance processes is further supplemented by the evaluation of such processes maturity. The project for optimization of software testing and quality assurance processes comes from the process analysis of the present condition of software testing methodology, as well as from the evaluation of procedural models maturity. The essence of processes optimization is the incorporation of change requests and innovative intentions of individual processes into the resulting state of methodology draft. For the measurement of selected quality assurance and software testing processes, the configuration of efficiency indicators and their application on particular processes is implemented. The research on the of the state-of-the-art, as well as the elaboration of this whole project for optimization of software testing and quality assurance processes runs in conformity with the principles of DMAIC model of Six Sigma method.

Abstract:
Authors: Mikaela Andersson & Louise Petersson Suporvisor: Dan Halvarsson Examiner: Åsa Devine Title: Lost in translation - A qualitative study regarding the translation process of social media activities Keywords: Social media, Translation process, KPIs, Qualitative metrics, Quantitative metrics, Data collection, Data analysis Background: Social media as marketing tools have created many opportunities for marketers and companies that want to increase the social media use. However, the vast amount of data has generated many question marks, so there is a great need to understand how the translation process of social media activities is proceeding to have the ability to understand the effectiveness of the activities. Purpose: The purpose is to describe the translation process regarding the evaluation of social media activities. Research Question: How is the translation process described concerning social media activities? Methodology: The research is founded upon a qualitative approach with a descriptive purpose. It includes multiple-case studies and the data was collected through six semi-structured interviews. The result was derived by descriptions, categorizations and combination of the data. Conclusion: Despite having a fairly stable process including KPIs, metrics, data collection and analysis, there is no general way of translating social media indicators. Every translation process is dependent upon whom the client is, and what the objectives are, so it is difficult to describe the process in detail. However, the above-mentioned process can be viewed as an overall approach.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the compositional processes in the work of Zé Barbeiro (José Augusto Roberto da Silva, b. 1952). The author has developed an intuitive writing style, essentially oriented by his practice as a Brazilian Choro guitarist. Nevertheless, it\'s well-known that his works differs auditorily from those of the Choro composers of the late nineteenth and the twentieth centuries. This is caused by the modification of harmonic, melodic, rhythmic, timbristic, metric, and formal aspects, and culminates in what has been called contemporary Choro, among other denominations. Initially I discuss these terminologies and I analyse the multiple meanings that the word \"Choro\" has received over the years. For this purpose, I examined primary sources and also the verbal and textual discourse of the chorões. In the second stage of this research, I investigated the compositional resources responsible for the innovations on the formal model considered as a pattern. For this, I worked from the hypothesis that formal organization is the main element responsible for chraracterising Zé Barbeiro\'s work as Choro. As a first conclusion, I verified that Choro has exercised multiple functionalities, which legitimise its framing as a cultural manifestation. I also identified that the professionalization of the musicians and the untying of Choro to dance functions (which erstwhile demanded a musical construction based on predictability) are the main factors responsible for providing the changes that Choro has undergone. Finally, I concluded that the musical expansion evidenced in the work of Zé Barbeiro has its germ in the compositional and interpretative performance of his predecessors.

Abstract:
It has been investigated the D1 line transitions of 39K atoms in external magnetic fields using nanocells for the cases of sigma+ and pi polarizations of laser radiation. For the first time it is demonstrated the decoupling of electronic total angular momentum J and nuclear momentum I (complete hyperfine Paschen-Back regime) in external magnetic field. For 39K the decoupling takes place at B >> 165 G. In the case of linear polarization it is shown that for B > 400 G the transmission spectrum consists of 2 groups of transitions and each group contains of one so-called "Guiding transition" (GT). The GT indicates the asymptotic value of all transitions probabilities in the group and the frequency shifts derivatives value (frequency slopes) in magnetic field. For the first time it is demonstrated the absence of cross-over resonances in the spectrum of saturated absorption. For that Rb filled micro-cell has been used with atomic vapor thickness 30-40 µm. The use of micro cell allowed the investigation of individual atomic transitions in strong external magnetic fields 30 - 6000 G ) using the saturated absorption technique. It is experimentally and theoretically manifested that at certain values of the external magnetic fields (300 - 2000 G) the probabilities of the Cs D2 line Fg=3 --> Fe=5 atomic transitions experience huge increase. These probabilities, which are forbidden at zero magnetic field, exceed the probabilities of allowed atomic transitions

Abstract:
This work addresses the issue of data boxes information system, which supports electronic communication between public authorities and other bodies. Aim of the work is to identify measure and evaluate the effectiveness of the data boxes at selected public authorities when processing received and sent documents. The effectiveness is detected by using the proposed metrics and also based on the analysis conducted in order to examine the processing of documents at selected institutions. The effectiveness of data boxes is being researched at the Municipal Office Dub nad Moravou and the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority. The information needed for the process analysis and the data required for evaluating the effectiveness of the implementation of the proposed metrics were obtained from the staff of those institutions. The work is divided into four parts. The first part is a thorough description of the data boxes information system. The functionality, use, technical solutions and legislations of data boxes are described based on available information. The second part focuses on the description and analysis of selected public authorities and on the way they process received and outgoing mail. In the third part of the work appropriate metrics to assess the effectiveness of the data boxes are proposed, followed by implementation of two-phase measurements. In the fourth section the effectiveness of the data boxes is evaluated based on the measurements conducted at selected public authorities. The main contribution of this work is that it will be the first evaluation of the effectiveness of the data boxes in selected subjects approximately one month after the official launch. Another benefit is the proposal of process for the evaluation of the effectiveness of a very specific new information system within the body and a comprehensive description of the data boxes information system.

Abstract:
A Hidden Markov Model generates two basic stochastic processes, a Markov chain, which is hidden, and an observation sequence. The filtering process of a Hidden Markov Model is, roughly speaking, the sequence of conditional distributions of the hidden Markov chain that is obtained as new observations are received. It is well-known, that the filtering process itself, is also a Markov chain. A classical, theoretical problem is to find conditions which implies that the distributions of the filtering process converge towards a unique limit measure. This problem goes back to a paper of D Blackwell for the case when the Markov chain takes its values in a finite set and it goes back to a paper of H Kunita for the case when the state space of the Markov chain is a compact Hausdor space. Recently, due to work by F Kochmann, J Reeds, P Chigansky and R van Handel, a necessary and sucient condition for the convergence of the distributions of the filtering process has been found for the case when the state space is finite. This condition has since been generalised to the case when the state space is denumerable. In this paper we generalise some of the previous results on convergence in distribution to the case when the Markov chain and the observation sequence of a Hidden Markov Model take their values in complete, separable, metric spaces; it has though been necessary to assume that both the transition probability function of the Markov chain and the transition probability function that generates the observation sequence have densities.

Abstract:
The native forest fragmentation, in the Atlantic Forest regions, was driven by the urban and agricultural expansion, generating a demand for restoration of degraded areas, to promote the increase of forest cover and the connection of forest remnants. These restoration actions should consider the landscape attributes influence on the ecological restoration process and, the definition of priority areas. In this context, the objective of the work was to develop an index for forest fragment prioritization, composed by Landscape Ecology metrics, aiming at the ecological restoration of the landscape. Considering the land-use/land-cover mapping of the Passa-Cinco sub-basin, we obtained the native forest remnants maps, that supported the generation of Landscape Ecology metrics and, consequently, the Ecological Landscape Restoration Index (ELRI). Three metrics, no correlated between then, were select for ELRI, considering their importance for the study, that was defined through the Participatory Technique and Analytic Hierarchy Process. The selected metrics were the mean distance between patches (DIST), patch area (AREA), the fractal dimension of the patch (PFD) and, their respective importance was 60%, 30% and, 10%. This way, ELRI was calculated for forest patches, defining their priority for ecological restoration. According to the results, the forest fragments smaller than 5 ha were the majority in the Passa-Cinco and, they are scattered in the agriculture matrix, where the pasture is the main land-use. Consequently, 25.44% of the forest patches were associated with the high priority level, through the index. We conclude that ELRI allows the evaluation of forest fragments for the ecological restoration of the landscape, highlighting the importance of distance among fragments.

Abstract:
In the 21st century is still more and more emphasis laid on the phenomenon of Business Process Management. In a great number of corporations it plays the key role, because it makes the overall performance of the organization more effective and it is able to react flexibly in the rapidly changing environment. The main purpose of this graduation thesis is to get the reader to know the meaning of the notion "business architecture -- its structure and roles in the process management. The main task is to design business architecture of the specific field of business and try to implement it in the real and existent or emerging company subjects, offering the real-estate services. As a result of this, we prove the usefulness of the process management and business architecture as a key factor of reaching the effectivity in dynamic, rapidly changing and competitive environment. The thesis is divided into two parts. The theoretical part provides us with methodical data and the practical part with the design of business architecture of a subject, actively operating in the real-estate market. Abstract:
The research of this thesis deals with the issue of knowledge transfer during the transition process of an IT project outsourced in EPST. In particular, How to transfer knowledge, experience and routines related to outsourced activities from outgoing team to a new incoming team? We focus on the transition due to its significance for outsourcing success, its complexity and theoretical richness, and its limited current understanding. We chose to approach this problem through knowledge management. In the first part of this thesis, based on the Goal-Question-Metric paradigm, we propose an approach for the definition of quality metrics covering the given operational requirements. The metrics we define take tacit knowledge into account, using information from the structural analysis of an informal network. In a second phase of this research, we developed a method, relying on capitalization on knowledge and theoretical mechanisms of knowledge transfer, and a tool to implement this process of knowledge transfer
