MIGLIO, NICOLE. "Phenomenology of Pregnancy: the lived experience of gestation." Doctoral thesis, Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11768/120595.

Abstract:
My research sets out to enrich current philosophical debate around pregnancy within the context of contemporary continental philosophy. In response to this theoretical urgency, this thesis offers a robust phenomenological inquiry into the eidetic structures of gestational lived experience. In particular, it shows how the Husserlian eidetic approach can account for the irreducibility of marginalized experiences, and can do so with the same theoretical toolkit serving accounts of so-called “normal” gestational experience. Part 1 (Phenomenological accounts) outlines the original development of phenomenology of pregnancy. Moving from the writings of Edmund Husserl, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Simone de Beauvoir, and Iris Marion Young, it explores the phenomenological understanding of intra-uterine life, the role played by the pregnant embodiment, the notion of pregnancy as a process and not merely a condition. The main upshot of this part concerns the importance of the paradigmatic shift in considering the pregnant woman, not simply as a patient, but instead as an embodied self. Part 2 (Space and Time of pregnancy) is an exercise in the epoché, critiquing common depictions of the pregnant body and pregnant temporalities. By analyzing the paradigmatic “hospitality model” and “container model” respectively, I show why pregnant embodiment might be more profitably explored in terms of Leib. Furthermore, I advocate a re-thinking of gestational temporalities, by complementing the rhetoric of “stages” (of the fetal development) with an analysis of the gestating self's temporalities (that I define as “scattered temporalities”). This analysis of time takes issue with the homogenizing accounts of pregnancy as a transitory phase concluding with the childbirth. In Part 3 (The who of pregnancy), I explore the “emergence” of the fetal-other. I begin by giving an overview of the conceptualization of alterity in chapter six, particularly focussing on the process of personalization of the fetus and its consequences for the gestational process. In chapter seven, I argue for the pregnant process in terms of radical intercorporeality, by analysing the role of the touch in defining the gestational polarity and the specific kind of agency the gestating self and the fetal-other have in their mutual and asymmetrical co-constitution. By shifting the focus from the pregnant condition to the (inter)subjective character of the gestational process, my thesis makes a genuinely original contribution to the field. It offers new phenomenological insight into the structures of gestational experience, and it expands and deepens understanding of the gestating self – both as an object of philosophical investigation and as a subject of knowledge and cognition.
Nella terza sezione (The who of pregnancy), esploro la natura dell’altro-fetale (fetal-other).

"Phenomenology and the process and role of phenomenological reduction in research." Bachelor's thesis, University of Oulu, 2016. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201611113012.

Abstract:
This Bachelor’s Thesis is a personal investigation into the researcher’s experiences, how they have affected her, and how the researcher can in the future, collect data concerning person’s who share similar experiences. Due to a TCK (Third-culture Kid) background, the researcher is interested in TCK-culture and the effects of TCK experiences. A TCK is an individual who has spent a significant amount of their childhood away from their home country. In this research paper the researcher attempts to separate herself from these experiences with the help of phenomenology and a phenomenological reduction process, in order to objectively view and produce any data concerning TCK experiences in future research. Phenomenology explores humans and human experiences, and the meanings behind these experiences. It is a branch of philosophy dedicated to producing ”pure” knowledge by investigating and analysing human experiences. The father of phenomenology Edmund Husserl, claimed that the foundation for ”pure” or ”true” knowledge and science was the human experience of the world, and these experiences are often subjective due to everyday experiences being determined by certain preconditions. The meanings behind human consciousness also develop according to a person’s life-world, and this life-world correlates with a person’s experiences. Humans also perceive reality according to their desires, interests, and beliefs, which a person often obtains from the culture they have been raised in. This research uses these ideas to determine whether or not it is possible to separate oneself from one’s experiences using a phenomenological reduction. Due to the fact that TCK individuals often share similarities in their experiences concerning society and change, their life-world’s are a unique and interesting topic for investigation. A phenomenological reduction is therefore a process where a person attempts to gain a new and fresh perspective on the world, free from the contamination or bias of past experiences. Due to the personal TCK background possibly affecting any results of data obtained, the researcher attempts to view past experiences objectively with the help of a phenomenological reduction, making this reduction process a personal research methodology
Fenomologinen reduktio on siis prosessi, jossa tutkija pyrkii tutkimaan maailmaa uusin silmin, ilman omien kokemuksiensa vaikutteita. Koska oma TCK-tausta mahdollisesti vaikuttaa tutkijan tuloksiin, tutkija pyrkii fenomenologinen reduktion avulla lähestymään näitä kokemuksia objektiivisesti, jolloin fenomenologisesta reduktiosta tulee tietyllä tavalla henkilökohtainen tutkimusmenetelmä

O'Rourke, Kathleen Mary. "Relationship Narratives: Appalachian Women's Experiences with Familial Process of Reentry." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/93198.

Full text
Abstract:
The reentry process post incarceration has been identified to be difficult in the most ideal of situations and family support has been shown to be nearly essential to avoid re-incarceration (Bahr, Armstrong, Gibbs, Harris and Fisher, 2005; Visher and Travis, 2003). This study is a first attempt to delve into the nature of relationships between women in Appalachia specifically, and their male relative who is a formerly incarcerated person. Informed by an intersectional feminist framework and symbolic interactionism, this study interviews eight women who reported maintaining a relationship with a male relative who had been incarcerated and reported assisting in his reentry process, in effort to extract the essence of daily lived experience in the context of multiple identities and social locations. A feminist phenomenological approach based on Husserl's philosophy and van Manen's method was utilized, whereby the researcher employed bracketing prior to further data investigation and analysis, in attempt to distill the distinct experiences of these unheard women. Key findings included two prominent themes, and one overall essence of the lived experience of women interviewed. The essence of women's lived experience in Appalachia within the context of reentry is that family is everything, and exists at the center and above all else. Subsumed within this lived experience were the themes of family traditions, or how things are done in Appalachia, and the meaning of incarceration to these women.

Unwin, Bren Carolyn. "Phenomenology and landscape experience : a critical appraisal for contemporary art practice." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/2115.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines some of the ways in which phenomenology might be applied to the representation of landscape experience within contemporary art practice. In particular, the thesis examines how embodied landscape experience, informed by an understanding of phenomenology, might be articulated by contemporary art practice that uses the media of film and digital video. The thesis also questions ways in which time might contribute to an understanding of such a representation of the landscape. Based on a critical analysis of landscape experience and its representation in art practice, the thesis identifies critical omissions both within the aligned disciplines of cultural anthropology and art history, particularly in instances where art has been employed ineptly as a tool for critical enquiry. Through a conceptual analysis of phenomenology, cultural archaeology, cultural anthropology, theories of technology, art history, critical film theory and art practice, this project makes a critical examination of new ways in which art can articulate phenomenological notions of landscape experience, both in the forms of a written exegesis and in examples of my own practice. To these ends, the writing of Christopher Tilley and Tim Ingold is examined in order to draw upon some of the ways in which cultural archaeology and cultural anthropology use Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology and James Gibson’s ecological theory of visual perception to understand an embodied engagement with the landscape. Following an expanded phenomenological examination of landscape the thesis identifies ways in which cultural anthropology has used painting. This examination is followed by an analysis of the work of Mike Michael and Don Ihde in order to determine the role played by technology within the mediation of experience and its representation in art. The writing of Joyce Brodsky is examined to analyse the relationship between embodied experience and art practice and, using Sobchack’s analysis, the thesis describes ways in which Merleau-Ponty’s idea of reversibility can explain moving imagery as the perception and expression of experience. As part of the method of analysis, a case study is conducted into how phenomenological ideas that have been identified in association with landscape experience might be understood within Tacita Dean’s work Disappearance at Sea. An analysis of phenomenological notions of landscape experience within my own art practice has led to the generation of a body of practice that includes film and digital video media. Key examples of my art practice have been selected that can articulate this thesis. Specifically, a 16mm film, Line, and a digital video, Length II provide evidence of contemporary art practice articulating an experience of the landscape from a phenomenological viewpoint. Within the production of moving imagery, there is a sequence of human actions and technological interventions that can be considered in phenomenological terms. Through a reflection of my own embodied experience - extended by vehicles, cameras and their associated technology - Line and Length II pay specific attention to how the placement of a camera and its associated technology mediates the mobile character of an experience of the landscape. Central to this enquiry has been the contention that through a rigorous application of phenomenology, a new mode of making moving imagery emerges, specifically one that gives particular emphasis to the placement of the camera and its associated technology in order to reveal the dynamic relationship between a perceiver and their environment in the twenty-first century.

Raine, Rosalind Angela Oates. "The meaning and process of engagement in outdoor adventure from an occupational science perspective to inform health promotion and occupational therapy practice." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/12249.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Outdoor adventure can offer meaningful occupations that enhance health and wellbeing. Theory in relation to the meaning of outdoor adventure from an occupational science perspective, and the process by which people become engaged in occupation, is underdeveloped. Methodology: Phenomenological philosophy underpinned the methodology. Five elements are presented in this thesis, data were explored from: a systematic review and meta-synthesis of research exploring the meaning of outdoor adventure; focus groups exploring factors affecting sustained engagement in walking in a community context; adventure autobiographies as exemplars of engagement and outdoor culture; and interviews with participants who engaged in outdoor adventure. Concepts arising from the findings were thematically synthesised. Findings and discussion: The meaning of outdoor adventure was associated with a sense of connection to self, others, nature, the environment, time and place. Meaning was associated with engagement that was congruent with aspirations for identity, health and wellbeing, values, and beliefs. The meaning and process of engagement in outdoor adventure were influenced by the ability to establish confidence in relation to developing social networks, physical skills and the knowledge required to participate in chosen occupations. The process of engagement in outdoor adventure was influenced by convenience and the ability to accommodate participation alongside other work and family routines, in terms of time, location and priorities. The process of engagement in outdoor adventure was influenced by context. The findings also suggest a change in the meaning of engagement in outdoor adventure over time. Conclusion: The implications of the study are that these aspects of meaning and dynamic process could be considered within health promotion and occupational therapy practice to enhance initiating, sustaining and returning to occupational engagement in outdoor adventure. Further research would be beneficial in relation to evaluating the application of these concepts in occupational therapy practice.

This is a study about learning and creative processes. More specifically, the study contains an observation of how I arrange three songs for different instruments within a specific time limit. The questions that are accounted for in this study are what techniques I use, which problems arise and how the time limit affects the result. The result of this study shows that a variety of factors are present during my composition/arranging process. It shows that I apply intuition, discursive thinking, music theoretical techniques, and experience in the field of arranging music. The observation is, to some extent, analysed from phenomenological perspective.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the understandings and perceptions that teachers in one elementary school in Virginia had about the teacher evaluation system. Participants were recruited from one elementary school in Virginia. All of the teachers and specialists were asked to participate and 12 participants volunteered. General education teachers made up 25% of the participants while specialists who taught in areas such as Music, Art, Physical Education, or Special Education made up 75% of the participants. Participants were interviewed individually and were asked the same questions about the teacher evaluation process. Interviews were transcribed and primary codes were developed from the data. Interview questions asked participants to describe both their understandings of the evaluation system under which they worked and the perceptions they had about their experiences with evaluation. Even though there were no questions dealing with emotions and feelings, emotional language was prevalent throughout the data. The overall findings from this study indicated that teachers had a limited knowledge about a problematic evaluation system. The fact that elementary teachers have unique responsibilities means that they may need multiple ways to TEACHER UNDERSTANDINGS AND PERCEPTIONS OF EVALUATION iii show their effectiveness. Other findings suggested that inconsistent evaluation practices in this school caused teachers to see no benefit from the process. Finally, findings also suggested that there was a misalignment between the evaluation instrument and the jobs of teachers, particularly those of specialist teachers. Implications for future research include studies which focus on teacher learning over time in order to support teachers at any level of experience. Future research also needs to be conducted with elementary classroom teachers and specialist teachers to discover ways that may create a more aligned and fair

Baker, Susan. "'Black women' therapists' impressions of the social differences of 'race' and gender in the therapeutic process : a post-structuralist phenomenology narrative exploration." Thesis, Middlesex University, 2018. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/23836/.

Full text
Abstract:
“Thinking about congruence implies [thinking] about difference…If there was no difference there would be no process and [therapeutic] progress.” Schmid, 2001p218 This study uses a hermeneutic phenomenological approach incorporating post-structuralist principles to explore ‘Black’ women therapists’ accounts of their lived experience of social differences (race and gender) in their clinical practice. It aims to provide rich descriptions of the women’s experiences, which are understood as grounded in wider socio-political processes and contexts. This methodological approach was adopted to acknowledge the socially constructed nature of race and gender and reduce the reification of these terms. It allows an explicit focus on the experiences of ’black’ female therapists in their clinical interactions with white male clients, including the extent where these social differences impact on therapists’ concepts of self and the developing therapeutic relationship with white male clients. Ten ‘black’ women psychotherapists from different therapeutic orientations and working in a range of contexts were interviewed about their experiences of working with white male clients. Three distinct but interrelated narrative structures emerged as prominent across the participants' accounts: race and gender as markers of difference; relating through difference; and finding self beyond social division. The study found race and gender, as intersecting contextual factors, could influence therapists’ ‘self-states’ and meaning-constructions within the therapeutic relationship. For most participants, race-related issues were more present than gender-related ones; participants’ accounts underlined the prominence of the internal psychological challenges they experienced when engaging with racial issues in the therapeutic process. In contrast to identity developmental model, the findings suggest therapists' identification with these categories is better understood by the use of subjectivity and positionality, concepts derived from post-structuralist discourse. Such use highlights the shifting, fluid and temporal nature of these social processes. Participants’ accounts suggested that self-reflexivity and relational forms of reflexivity allowed them to find ‘self’ in the context of race and gender differences with clients. Highlighting the significance of these factors for ‘black’ female therapists and the importance of addressing difference related to race and gender within training. The study concludes by making recommendations for the normalising and validation of therapists’ experiences in supervision and training, so that ‘black’ female therapists can be supported to find ‘self’ beyond the social divisions they may encounter in their practice.

The aim of this research has been to unveil how network articulations promoted through the Digital Network Process for Digital Inclusion from the Program Telecentro.BR flowed and to understand their relevance for the processes of network articulation involving peoples and institutions. By working in this program as one of the professionals responsible for the articulation of such network, it was taking into consideration the methodological strategy that has been organized around register notes and memories of experiences as a possibility of this study. A detailed account is woven bringing together aspects of the history, the shifting elements and shapes of the Network Process with the researchers own principles and values, bringing light to phenomenal aspects and to the viewers perspective at once. Many conversations in research environments contributed to the subsequent reflexive process shedding light to otherwise unnoticed aspects and traces of such experience, and thus three modes of being in a Network Process: public policy, pro-duction aiming co-responsabilisation and formative active network. In the first of these modes public policy -the network is influenced primarily by the bureaucratic government from which it emerges and to which it is destined. In the second mode production the increase in interaction, both by real presence and by technology-bound, brought to light the various actors needs and redefined the objectives and protocol processes, of the network. In the third mode unveiled formative active network the network experienced the assumption of its historical destination through an open and horizontal debate forum, in which all the actors could actively take part and in which the agents interaction designed the collectives course and destination. Taking into consideration the building of networks involving peoples and institutions, these transformations in the such Network Process shownrelevance in three main aspects: political (as it sheds light to the possibility of a recticular structure assuming strategically place in a public policy, thus making its everyday actors into decisive agents); formative (because education designed in this network assumed its consistency through tightening bonds throughout the network, whichfacilitated the comprehension and protagonism for those being trained, creating conditions, even technologically for learning in a collective and shared basis); and ethic (because it made possible other experience than that based on the disciplinary ethics, searching for a consensus, regarding the discipline to the ruling State and to the scientific disciplines. Abstract:
The introduction highlights the importance of working with meaning-making processes and argues that this work is lacking in clinical work with anxiety and depression. The aim in this study is to render meaning-making processes available to clinical work with anxiety and depressionlike afflictions by answering the research question: How do we search for and create meaningful values? Written descriptions from three participants were gathered and analyzed with a descriptive phenomenological method which made possible the identification of a psychological process structure. Among eight identified partial processes, questioning and abandonment of earlier values and following and defining of new values were found. How to work with meaning-making processes in a clinical setting is suggested. Last, suggestions for future research are presented.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the question how do group therapy members perceive the therapeutic relationship in process group therapy? The study fits within the interpretivist paradigm and employs a phenomenological qualitative research approach (Moustakas, 1994). The theoretical framework used to orient the study drew on process group theory according to Rutan, Stone, and Shay’s (2007) psychodynamic group psychotherapy approach and Yalom and Leszcz’s (2005) interpersonal process model of group psychotherapy. Participants were 10 university counseling center clients who were members of process therapy groups at a large urban university. Data collection consisted of in-depth interviews and demographic questionnaires. Phenomenological data analysis procedures followed recommendations by Creswell (2007) and Moustakas (1994). To enhance the rigor and trustworthiness of the study, the researcher engaged in member checking, use of an external auditor, reflexive and methodological journaling, and negative case analysis. Results of the study are presented as descriptions of how participants perceived the therapeutic relationship and the relationship’s influence on the experience of group therapy. Eight categories emerged from the interviews: (a) presence of group leaders; (b) safety; (c) caring; (d) sharing; (e) running the group; (f) levels of leadership; (g) developing understanding; and (h) intimacy with boundaries. Categories consisted of one or more related themes. There is a consideration of how the researcher’s experiences and beliefs played a role in the study. The results are discussed in relation to relevant group therapy theory and research. Strengths, weaknesses, and considerations of the study findings are offered. Implications of the study findings for group therapy practice and research are noted.

Abstract:
Billions of mental health care dollars for millions of children and adolescents in need has garnered significant attention within the behavioral health industry to reduce costs while improving treatment efficacy through the identification and implementation of evidence based practices with youth populations requiring therapeutic services. This hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative research approach in the field of psychology is a consumer driven one in the world of business. Line by line context and discourse analyses, which included both a prior and inductive coding, of the verbiage and phraseology of 10 boys and 10 girls, aged 8-12, actively engaged in outpatient psychotherapy, formed the foundation for 31 themes that captured a shared experience or a consumer driven “view inside the therapist’s office.” These results are represented through 6 main themes indicating that a) “knowledge fosters investment” upon entry into and initiation of mental health services when therapists and parents recognize that b) “words have power to facilitate success,” only if, guided by childhood development but chosen thoughtfully for each child. Further, c) “therapy is therapy across the lifespan,” such that therapeutic care for minors deemed legally dependent reflected treatment for legally independent persons with implementation methods influenced by age. Lastly, age, as a definitive factor, impacted the means by which the youth in my study experienced d) “autonomy… and developed e) “therapeutic rapport…” in references to e) “boundaries…” that mitigate the entire treatment experience. The outcomes of this study offer the research and practice community opportunity to move children from the “object” of the treatment to “agents” in their treatment by respecting the ideas expressed by youth themselves.

Abstract:
The purpose of this self-study is to investigate how my creative process is shaped by the use of different composition techniques. The research questions that the study has sought to find answers to are: How do I experience that my creation process is formed when I compose using two separate composition techniques? What similarities and differences do I experience the different creation processes? To accomplish this, two methods of composition have been used to compose two pieces of music for solo piano, one piece and composition session per method. The study is based on the phenomenological perspective and was conducted using video observation and the sketches produced during the observation periods. The result is presented structured into six themes after linear time and consists of the two methods creation processes and how it was perceived to compose after them. I have named these themes The original idea (when the first creative spark hits and, for example, the initiating cell is created), Structure sketch (when the shape of the piece is chosen), The first draft (where a more complete picture is given of the piece and how its different parts relate to each other) Developing (how the young piece is developed and filled out with, for example, chords and secondary voices), Second draft (when the last bits are put in place and the sections of the piece are connected), and Final changes (when the composition process is reviewed and early decisions are revised if they no longer fits into the final form of the piece). In conclusion, the results are discussed in relation to previous research. Under the heading The process, the results of the study are examined on a more general level, and under the heading Creativity or knowledge, it is pondered on how much of the composition process is actually based on the creative origination of new material.

Russi, Luigi. "Socio-materiality as phenomenon : growing Transition culture." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/18003.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis innovates on existing literature on the Transition movement by relinquishing stock academic definitions of its ends and means, which purportedly spell out what Transition 'is'. In its stead, it approaches Transition as phenomenon, namely as an evolving socio-material formation that proliferates a cultural repertoire to sustain a growing range of concerted everyday activities. This is the difference between an instrumental focus, whereby Transition is reduced to a strategy which is oriented towards an unchanging programmatic definition, and an orientational one; the latter attuned to the contingent process by which a movement expresses form and orientation in emergent fashion. The monograph and the introductory chapter contribute to this task in different ways. Everything Gardens and Other Stories undertakes a rich description of various practical realms of Transition and, to capture the coming into being of a phenomenon, it pays particular attention to its developmental trajectory. This entails focusing on the generative movement of the culture of Transition, as it emerges from the attempt to address embodied disquiets originally elicited by information about peak oil and climate change. That initial focus, however, forms merely a station along a path in which new sources of anxiety find validation and prompt further cultural production. The monograph also describes the tensions arising in the process, as a growing body of discursive and material resources have to negotiate an accommodation, in order to become reciprocally recognisable as participant parts enfolded in a common cultural milieu. The introductory chapter supports this account by fleshing out a methodological paradigm that helps direct attention to the unfolding of a socio-material phenomenon in its dilemmatic moments and continual negotiations. For this purpose, starting from canonical sources in phenomenology, it goes on to situate the 'unfolding' of a phenomenon in the proliferation of entanglements between actors, human and nonhuman. In the 'mattering' of a phenomenon so understood, dilemmatic moments call forth an ethical questioning and an ontological politics immanent to the very process of cultural production. This, it is submitted, is precisely how an orientational focus allows to access Transition as phenomenon, beyond the bounds of academic definitions.

Abstract:
Music Therapy
Ph.D.
Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) is a unique method of psychotherapy that uses music and spontaneous imagery while the client is in a non-ordinary state of consciousness (NOSC). Therapists in any therapeutic modality including GIM have a wide range of unanticipated reactions to clients' experiences. Studies have indicated that reactions of the therapist can lead to different interventions and can impact the outcome of the session and perceived effectiveness as a therapist. Because GIM therapists often work with clients who have extensive emotional and physical issues, it is possible that the therapists have strong reactions to clients’ experiences, which can lead to burnout. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to explore therapists’ experience of unanticipated reactions through the within-case and cross-case analysis using phenomenology outlined by Moustakas (1994). Findings suggested that the GIM therapist had certain expectations in GIM and it was normal for the GIM therapist to have unanticipated reactions to clients' experiences when those expectations were not met. There were several factors that affected the decision-making of GIM therapists after unanticipated reactions, including self-mediation, cognitive foundation, self-awareness, therapist's past experiences, trust, surrender, being present, integration, and self-care. Findings also suggested that GIM therapists could deal with unanticipated reactions within the scope of practice as they engage in personal-growth, self-care, and continuing education. Two guidelines were proposed to understand the process of GIM therapists in their moments of unanticipated reactions. Limitations and implications for further studies were discussed.

Abstract:
This minor thesis reports an attempt to describe and understand moments of experiential meaning within the dance therapy process for a patient with dementia. It also documents an attempt to develop a methodology which could adequately grasp the complexities of such an experience. A phenomenological approach with its emphasis on allowing the phenomenon to reveal itself through multiple perspectives seemed the most appropriate for this study. However, while phenomenology influenced the format of the dance therapy sessions as well as the constitution and analysis of the data, ultimately a hermeneutic analysis was employed for further explication of the material. The study consisted of four individual dance therapy sessions with an 85 year old patient with moderate dementia. The researcher/therapist worked improvisationally and a music therapist provided improvised music. After the sessions, all of which were videotaped, the patient was videotaped viewing the dance session video, in order to obtain her verbal or non-verbal responses to the material. It was decided to focus on the 'significant moments', selected intuitively as moments which seemed high points of the session. A naive description was made, on which an adaptation of Giorgi's four-phase method of analysis was applied. Certain foci, such as energy flow, were identified and individually described. In time, it became clear that the written descriptions alone were insufficient and that reflection would need to cover all the material from multiple sources and perspectives. This was done, and the data were later further explicated by reference to writings on dance therapy, dance aesthetics and the philosophical concept of the embodied self, and Sacks's neurological writings on the awakened self. The conclusions of the research were that the patient was not only transformed within the dance session and able to re-create aspects of her old self, but also underwent, through the experience as a whole (the dance and the reflection upon it, facilitated by the video viewing), a change in awareness, through which she reintegrated the past with the present and, in her words, 'came out of the cupboard...into the brightness'.

Abstract:
This thesis presents phenomenological studies of a state-of-the-art NNLL+NLO theoretical calculation of a novel collider observable known as 'phi star'. In these studies the 'phi star' observable, a measure of azimuthal decorrelation, is applied directly to the leptons in the production of massive lepton pairs in hadron collisions (the Drell-Yan process). This provides an alternate measure of the recoil of the massive vector boson (Z/gamma) against initial state QCD radiation, but with distinct experimental advantages over the traditional boson transverse momentum. Attention is focused on the small-'phi star' regime (the quasi-back-to-back regime) where the infrared dynamics of soft/collinear gluon emissions become important. These phenomenological studies are followed up with the presentation of a measurement of 'phi star' in 'Z to mu mu' events using 20.3 fb^-1 of collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment in 2012. Finally, studies directly related to the ATLAS absolute luminosity calibration by the van der Meer (vdM) method are presented, with the objective of elucidating the role of transverse linear beam correlation. In particular, I present studies using an analytical method I have developed in order to precisely extract individual beam information by way of studying phenomena pertaining to the luminous region during vdM scans. In addition, a dedicated study of the long- and short-term stabilities of the principal detectors for luminosity monitoring is also presented, along with an appropriate recalibration of these detectors.

Abstract:
In this independent study the process in composing a classical piece for solo violin with a poem as inspiration is examined. The purpose of this study is to enlighten how the emotional life as well as the lived life have affected the making of a classical composition through a phenomenological perspective. The study is based on five separate self-observations through audio recording. With the help of phenomenology the study examines how the composition as a phenomenon can be accomplished with the stimulation from a poem. The result is shown through four different themes: The Composition Birth, The Composition Progress, Finishing the Piece and Emotional Life and Lived Life. In the result it appeared that the emotional life and lived life affected the making process of the piece in different ways throughout the work. In the beginning of the study utopian thoughts lingered and prevented the making process. Thereafter a change occurred in relation to my own abilities and through reflection and contemplation the piece could be created. Thereafter a chapter on discussion treats the result analysis in relation to the chosen literature which is based on previous research, studies and the phenomenological perspective.

The purpose of this study is to examine determinants of stress and tension in my own saxophone playing. I experience relaxation as a method to counteract practicing saxophone in a tense state. The study is based on the following research question: How can relaxation enhance physical and mental awareness, and solve habitual tension in playing the saxophone? From a phenomenological perspective, I have examined both physical and mental experiences that appeared during and after completed relaxation- and saxophone exercise, through a logbook. Physical and mental states were examined in relation to both my increased abilities of relaxation and my saxophone playing in general. Furthermore, the results section goes further into depth of how an increased awareness concerning bodily and mental experience decreased physical and mental stress. Moreover, the implications of the present study presents how my saxophone practice and musical performances changed in line with the relaxation intervention over time. The results are linked to previous research and other relevant literature in the discussion chapter. Finally, suggestions on further research is presented.

There is still the need of further knowledge about the contribution of psychotherapy to position the individual as subject, actor, and author of its own life. This research has the objective of investigate the individual experience throughout the psychotherapeutic process, considering its own perspective. The theoretical starting point is Gestalt-therapy and Phenomenology its methodological approach. This paper is divided into five parts. The first part outlines qualitative research and phenomenological method according to Amedeo Giorgi, briefly presenting Phenomenology and Qualitative Epistemology. The second, empirical part presents interviews with three clients who were submitted to more than six years of individual therapy and at least two years of group therapy. The interviews were focused on their experiences during the psychotherapeutic processes. In the third part, results are presented in categories, and, in the fourth part, the psychotherapeutic process in Gestalt-therapy is described, after a brief introduction on psychotherapy (in general) and, particularly, Gestalttherapy. Finally, a reflection on the research conducted follows, considering some questions and propositions. We conclude that psychotherapy was positively experienced by the interviewed clients, who after this process, were able to reach self-knowledge, discover the reason of their existence, recover their authenticity and encounter the other and themselves with respect and acceptance. They also developed their ability to dialogue, to live in the present moment, to re-signify un-ended situations, and, most of all, to establish healthier relationships.
A primeira destaca a pesquisa qualitativa e aborda o método fenomenológico, segundo as formulações de Amedeo Giorgi, apresentando brevemente a Fenomenologia e a Epistemologia Qualitativa.

The present dissertation aims to demonstrate perceptive singularities of different subjects by the observation of the relations between materials selected, production procedures and spacial choices for their presentation, in visual art, viewing perception as the complex of all body senses. The theorical references relate Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Gaston Bachelard’s Perception and Matter Phenomenology to Algirdas Julien Gremas’ Semiopticts of the Senses and Eric Landowski studies, as well as focuses the aesthetic paradigms of Western art, associating them to the sensorial callings in the artist book making in its interaction potential with the public, and as hybrid object in contemporary art. The dissertation has, as methodologic referential, the qualitative research with description and data analysis of the study of two cases that regard the interaction between body and matter in the creative process and production of artist books by art teachers, that took place in a workshop designed for this data collection, at Feevale University. The analysis verified the aesthesis and sinesthesis present in the creative process of each studied case, concluding that each subject gives priority to one of the five body senses, acompanied by a second body sense, as their processes and products demonstrated. One of the studied cases showed the priority of the sense of touch over the visual one; the other case, however, demonstrated that the visual choices were more important, followed by tactile ones. The workshop final productions brought to discussion the differences between an artist book and an object book, which brought a dilemma regarding their delimitations, as they were tending to belong to the installation category. In my opinion, the study of perception, considering the five senses and the perceptive particularities of each subject, emphasizes the significance of the combination of sensitivity and intellect in the p

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
We study how the elements of the leptonic right-handed mixing matrix can be determined at the LHC in the minimal Left-Right symmetric extension of the standard model. We do it by explicitly relating them with physical quantities of the Keung-Senjanovi\'c process and the lepton number violating decays of the right doubly charged scalar. We also point out that the left and right doubly charged scalars can be distinguished at the LHC, without measuring the polarization of the final state leptons coming from their decays. Then we study time reversal symmetry violation in the $\mu\rightarrow e\gamma $ decay and the $\mu\rightarrow e$ conversion process and compute a T-odd triple vector correlation for the $\mu\rightarrow e\gamma $ decay and the $\mu\rightarrow e$ conversion process, finding simple results in terms of the CP violating phases of the effective Hamiltonians. Finally we focus on the minimal Left-Right symmetric extension of the Standard Model, which is a complete model of neutrino masses that can lead to an appreciable correlation. We show that under rather general assumptions, this correlation can be used to discriminate between Parity or Charge-conjugation as the discrete Left-Right symmetry.

Abstract:
In this self-study the experience of arranging for string instruments is examined based on different musical parameters. The purpose of this study is to analyze these experiences and to examine how the attitude and self-confidence varies and develops. During three months, arrangements of eight songs of varying character are created, where the process is documented with the help of a journal and analyzed with thematic analysis. With support from the phenomenological perspective and selected literature, a result is presented based on the following questions: How do different musical parameters such as hearing, rhythm and harmonization affect when arranging? How is the arrangement process experienced based on attitude, self-confidence and challenges? The results are divided into two themes based on these issues, musical parameters and the experience of arrangement. The results show that an aural-based arrangement is experienced as pleasurable and challenging. Development in terms of harmonization and music theory is analyzed and when arranging for students, it is concluded that the balance between challenges and clarity in the arrangement is indeed a challenge for the arranger as well. Structure is highlighted as a significant factor in the process and the attitude to the study is mostly positive. Adversity provides new impetus and inspiration to new ideas and self-confidence grows during the study. In conclusion, a discussion follows about the results of the study in relation to selected literature and the phenomenological perspective.

Abstract:
Public apathy on the issue of Anthropogenic Climate Change (ACC) is widespread, with more than half of surveyed Australians and Britons in denial of the phenomenon. While much is known about media influences and strategies such as message framing, there is little in the way of research on the impact of designed visual communication. This study builds knowledge and challenges assumptions by employing a relational approach between ACC visual communications, the professionals producing them, and the members of society that these communications are attempting to influence, contributing knowledge to the fields of graphic design, science communication and social science.

Norouzi, Neda. "Intergenerational Facilities: Designing Intergenerational Space through a Human Development Lens." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/79848.

Full text
Abstract:
The built environment can be structured to encourage or discourage social interaction and can have effects on children's cognitive, social, and emotional development as well as effects on elder's health and well-being. Knowing the profound influence of the built environment on elders (Garin, et al., 2014) and children (Bradford, 2012), the design of intergenerational spaces therefore has the potential to influence the interaction between elders and children engaged in intergenerational programming. Intergenerational care programs present opportunities for cooperation and exchange of skills, knowledge, and experience between people of different age groups (Bradford, 2012; Jarrott, 2011; Kaplan et al., 2002; Newman, 1997). Highlighting the common points and connections between architectural phenomenology and human development theories, this study presents the benefit of developmental theories being applied empirically in architectural design when creating intergenerational facilities in order to enhance the quality of intergenerational interactions. To address this goal, this study examines physical environments that can effectively and efficiently provide intergenerational services. The objectives of this study are to find out (1) whether or not the identification and adaptation of human development theories and architectural phenomenology inform the extension of normative design for intergenerational facilities and (2) in what ways do architectural conditions of an intergenerational space meet the needs of multiple age groups and facilitates interaction. The study uses grounded theory framework to develop a theory related to the influence of spatial design on the quality of intergenerational interactions. To accomplish this, a phenomenological description of different intergenerational spaces was conducted, followed by four to six hours of behavioral/observation mapping of the intergenerational space. The investigator interviewed the architect(s) to ascertain their main ideas and the purpose of designing the building, and the people (participants, educators, coordinators, and facilitators) involved with the intergenerational programs to indicate how the space influences intergenerational interaction. The result of reviewing and analyzing the collected data is a new model of design process grounded in theoretical tenets of personhood and contact theory and applicable for designing intergenerational facilities.

Abstract:

"From being there to becoming together : Organizing co-presence in hybrid modes of working." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Université Paris sciences et lettres, 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024UPSLD047.

Abstract:
This doctoral research explores the complex, multi-faceted nature of co-presence within hybrid work arrangements. Dominant understandings of co-presence often focus on ‘being there’ in physically or virtually shared spaces. However, this thesis proposes moving beyond co-presence as merely a socio-spatial situation, instead framing it as a dynamic, embodied process of becoming together. By emphasizing the relational and organizational underpinnings of co-presence, this research aims to capture the intricacies of social dynamics and collective organizational life in hybrid settings. Drawing on a process phenomenology perspective, the thesis examines co-presence as a lived bodily experience that manifests through diverse modalities across time-space and physical-virtual boundaries. This conceptualization challenges traditional notions of presence and absence, opening new avenues for understanding the fluidity of co-presence in technology-enabled work environments. Ultimately, this research seeks to answer: What does it mean to feel co-present in hybrid work arrangements, and how is it organized in these conditions?

This thesis aims to unveil, in the studentsâ context, the characteristics of the teaching-learning process in the distance modality; the meaning and the appreciation of evaluation practices, in the Education graduate program at the State University of âCearÃâ. The research was based on a hermeneutic approach and it was supported by phenomenological interpretation. Heideggersâ conceptions were the foundation to analyze the meaningful units as well as the subjectsâ speeches. The phenomenology of Merleau-Ponty was also a theoretical framework for the research, in order to reveal the essence of the phenomenon, that is, the significance and meanings of the subjectsâ experiences. The research took place in the years of 2012 and 2013 in the âMaranguapeâ and âCampos Salesâ university campi. The criteria for choosing these centers were the location, what means the proximity or distance from the main University campus, in Fortaleza, the main campus of this university. The subjects were twenty four students which were enrolled in the distance program, four preceptors and the studentsâ professors. A semi-structured interview was utilized as the instrument to collect the data. The study searched to interpret the thoughts and the experiences of the subjects, as well as their awareness of âbeing in the worldâ in a High Education environment. The results related to the studentsâ speeches reveal that their intentions about the future are directly linked to the process of decision making, in relation to the opportunities. This fact was evidenced by the desire to restore self-esteem and by the decision to enroll in a graduate program, which means that the Dasein stems from the student themselves and from the ways they relate themselves with the world. In this distance education modality, the students were aware that âbeing in the worldâ is related to the way they utilize the object (technics/EaD), preferable, as an optional instrument which is important to conclude the graduate program and to overcome the limitations related to its utilization. Thus, they transform the distance reality concerning EaD computer, by means of active exploration and optimistic expectative, while they are enrolled in the program. The study also showed that the knowledge construction depends on stimulating factors which are present in an atmosphere favorable to learning such as interaction, empathy among persons and the educational program structure which foster dialogues, conexions and multiple learning. The feeling of âbeing in the worldâ is built by the evaluation procedures of the distance program that should be based on a constructivist approach, in which the processus makes possible the drive to act, to anticipate and to advance. It was observed in the program the practice of first generation evaluation procedures; however, the speeches of the professors reveal they believe in a constructive evaluation. So, it is suggested the adoption of a Dialogic Evaluative Act, since it articulates, in the evaluation process, a dialogue among philosophical, pedagogic, political and curricular principles of formation. Therefore, in the evaluative procedures, the Dasein is the center of this process and should be integral, dialogic and historical. In this way, it may foster the development of independent and responsible experiences which allow an active, conscious and meaningful learning. In this context, it is possible to affirm that the essence of the evaluation procedures consists in the constructive possibilities that it develops in the students such as autonomy and self formation.

Rul, Brigitte. Abstract:
Childhood spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type 1 (divided into true type 1 and 1a), are progressively paralyzing neuromuscular diseases that afflict children, affecting their prognosis when respiratory muscles are involved. Invasive ventilatory support by tracheotomy prevents death, but raises ethical issues in view of the severity of motor impairment. SMA type 1 represents the most severe form. These children are completely paralyzed and communicate only with great difficulty; they are not tracheotomized and die in infancy. For Type 1a, being somewhat less severe with the possibility for children to express themselves, French medical teams are generally positioned in favor of tracheotomy, which is not an internationally unanimous approach. This question raises an ethical issue because when professionals assess the life that will result for the child and family, they sometimes fear that it represents unreasonable and excessive care. Whether their views are favorable or unfavorable regarding ventilatory support, they cannot decide alone which approach should be undertaken; it is impossible to exclude parents from decision making. Given these issues, this study pays particular attention to parents of children with two research themes through qualitative research : One focus was on parents’ experience of deciding whether or not to accept tracheotomy, which was examined through two phenomenological studies: one with parents whose child died without a tracheotomy, the other with parents with children living with a tracheotomy. The other focus was on the consequences of a tracheotomy for the child and family, conducted among mothers of children with tracheotomies. The results of these studies highlight the difficulties of being faced with such a decision as a parent, and the journey and events that lead to one point or another on this issue. They also question the place in society of the quadriplegic child with a tracheotomy and ventilator dependence. The child’s condition represents a paroxysmal degree of physical and social vulnerability, significantly increased by the fact that he/she cannot, as adults, take his/her life in hand. This subject is never mentioned in the lay press; these situations often remain in the shadows while there are lives that are in dire need of tolerance and human solidarity (individual and collective) to not be extinguished. This partly determines the future of the child and promotes or, on the contrary, prevents the creation of his/her rightful place in society

Abstract:
The mental health of healthcare workers during the Ebola outbreak in West Africa was a serious concern for healthcare professionals and the mental health field. One area in West Africa where healthcare workers played a significant role during the Ebola outbreak of 2014 and 2015 was Sierra Leone. This qualitative research study was designed to explore the perceptions of Sierra Leoneans healthcare workers' mental health, how they coped, and treatment they received while providing care for Ebola virus patients. This study, with a phenomenological research approach, used purposeful sampling to recruit 10 healthcare workers to participate in semi structured, open-ended interviews. The stress theory model and a hermeneutic phenomenology conceptual framework were used as a lens of analysis to understand the views of healthcare workers who worked directly with Ebola virus patients in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The results of the analysis of the collected data produced 9 major themes. The major themes suggest that healthcare workers experienced mental health symptoms such as depression and anxiety, personal thoughts and feelings such as insomnia, and suicidal ideation. Strategies for coping included using the Bible; and the detrimental impact included facing discrimination after the Ebola outbreak. Most of the healthcare workers blame the government for not providing adequate coping resources, which led to the personal consequence of hopelessness. This study may benefit mental health professionals working in an epidemic. Additionally, this study may contribute to social change by providing a deeper understanding of the mental health system and healthcare workers in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

The present study deals with problems concerning the relation between substantive law and process, aiming at showing the denial, by the majority doctrine, of the action of the substantive law, considered mere slogan, is a great source of subtraction of the practical world, and therefore the infectivity of the process and the consequent non- concretization of the rights (pretensions) of substantive law, which depend on the process to be achieved. We aim at, in the (de)construction of the pre-comprehension of this relation, delineating how this relation has developed to the complete autonomy between the substantive law and process, showing this alienation has not been surpassed. Then, we analyze how the paradigm of modernity as the age of technique is projected in this relation, transforming the substantive law in the product of the process, in which the essence of the substantive law, what it really is, is not considered. We seek for elements which lead to the possibility of annihilation of the substantive law by the process, in which the substantive law is not what it is, but what the process tells it is. It is possible because the strength of the substantive law ? the action of substantive law has been denied. In this context, I aim at demonstrating the denial of the action of the substantive law subtracts the possibilities/presuppositions for the substantive law to take place in the process. The final desideratum is to fundament the hermeneutics task of the substantive law action. The theoretical basis is, concerning the substantive law action, in the doctrine of Pontes Miranda and Ovídio Araújo Baptista da Silva. The hermeneutics reading which is intended seeks, fundamentally, in Martin Heidegger and Hans-Georg Gadamer, the conditions of the possibility for unveiling the ideology which is the basis for the denial of the substantive law and the projection of an authentic view of the relation between the substantive law and process, in which the action of the substantive law is the source of irradiation of effects and tells to the process, like the mode of being of the substantive law. Finally, the effects of this new mode of viewing this relation and making law over some most discussed procedural institutes of the civil procedure is projected.

Abstract:
Hannah Arendt is very famous as historian of ideas (Origins of totalitarism) and reknowned as political theorist (her essays) and as philosopher (The human condition, The life of the mind). The last years german scholars working on Arendt have brought out interest on Arendt and literature. For the first time this thesis stresses systematically different aspects on Arendt’s relation to poetry : her texts on poetry and literature of different authors as well as her theoretical texts on poetry and finally her own poetical texts

Abstract:
This paper presents a reflection on the memory of the compositional process and an analysis of the characteristics apprehended from composer’s consciousness, through the music. The compositions, which are the main object of reflection in this memorial, had the concept of shadow as its aesthetic premise, which inspired the decision-making. The fundamental procedure for the preparation of compositions, it constitutes from the action, which is taken as a starting point for characterizing the composition and the musical identity, mainly related to performance. The analysis is supported by Phenomenology of Music, from authors like Schutz (1976) and Clifton (1976), and is focused on temporalities found in music, using the Kramer (1988) propositions about the kinds of time (Linear Time and Nonlinear Time). These kinds are related to ideal objects of autoress’ thought, especially those originated in musical experiences. Images and sonorities are members of a frame of reference that groups the memory contents. Thus, sonorities, memories and actions are taken as aspects that constitute the musical and compositional phenomenon.

This research aimed to provide insight to understand, according to the phenomenological-existential concept, the formation process of competitive athletes showing possible contributions of this perspective in the context of sports and redefining the worldview about athletes, their formation and competitive sport. As procedure, four interviews were conducted with volleyball and basketball athletes of both genders that are in different passages of their sports career. The stages of formation considered were sports initiation, sport specialization, professionalization, and the leaving process. Guided by the phenomenological methodology and existential conception, the analysis sought to explicit the lived experience of these athletes expressed during their participation on this survey. From the central discourses of respondents - the competitive athletes - the meaning units were taken from the experiences of the process and from the converging aspects of the reports to understand the structure of the studied phenomenon - the formation process. Based on the reported lived experiences ten meaning units were found that constitute the formation process of competitive athletes: 1 - empathetic relationship between athlete and scout; 2 - importance of the familys presence; 3 - athlete relationship with coach-educator; 4 athletes bonding with sport practiced; 5 - playing as a project of being-in-the-world; 6 from emotion to excitement experience; 7 nature of being competitive athlete; 8 - own pains of the athletic career; 9 - being athlete project and future project; 10 - important personal transformations. The meaning units were expressed with different frequencies in each step of the sports formation process and, as a whole, they revealed the importance of the support network for the involvement of athletes in the sport, playing as form of a unique meaning experience and the lived process as constant building path of existence of these athletes. Thinking of the formation process of competitive athletes from the reality experienced by them allows us to redeem the issue of being an athlete in its entirety and mobilize professionals for a larger view on the work done with them

Abstract:
The present study is a result of my concern, as a nurse, for women with cancer and without any possibilities of resources for a cure. Therefore, the trajectory of this study was focused on the comprehension of the meaning of taking care through those women’s perspective. For this purpose, I chose to make a qualitative survey in a phenomenological approach, based on the following directive questions: “Tell me how I can take care of you. How would you like to be taken care?”. From the descriptions given by the women, it came up the ontological unifications analyzed and interpreted according to Martin Heidegger’s reference. Such unifications made it possible to reveal ways to the act of taking care in the dying process that go beyond technical-scientific knowledge, because taking care also goes through empathy, the act of listening to somebody, through patience, zeal, pain control and autonomy. Based on those women’s point of view, I was able to reach the sense of a person with cancer in the dying process, not as a finished thing, but as a person with possibilities in spite of facing a situation based on a fact, which is living with the existential end.

Welch, Brett. "A phenomenological-enactive theory of the minimal self." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/6043.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this project is to argue that we possess a minimal self. It will demonstrate that minimal selfhood arrives early in our development and continues to remain and influence us throughout our entire life. There are two areas of research which shape my understanding of the minimal self: phenomenology and enactivism. Phenomenology emphasizes the sense of givenness, ownership, or mineness that accompanies all of our experiences. Enactivism says there is a sensorimotor coupling that occurs between us and the environment in a way which modulates the dynamic patterns of our self development; the laying down of these basic patterns helps make us who we are and gives rise to the phenomenological, experiential mineness. Drawing on these two core ideas, I will be arguing for a Phenomenological-Enactive Minimal Self (abbreviated PEMS). I will be emphasizing the role of the body and the role of affects (moods, feelings, and emotions) as the most important components relevant to understanding minimal selfhood. Put more concretely, the set of conditions which constitute the PEMS view are: (i) The minimal self is the experiential subject; the minimal sense of self is present whenever there is awareness. It is the subjectivity of experience, the sense of mineness, or givenness which our experiences contain. (ii) The phenomenological part of the PEMS view turns on the idea of a bodily and dynamic integration of sensorimotor coupling and affective experience. It is, ontologically speaking, the lived body in enactive engagement with the environment. It is this embodied subject which anchors and forms the foundation for the later ‘narrative' self, which emerges from it and which is continually influenced by it. It is the subject enactively engaged with others, dependent on sensorimotor processes and affects. We have an identity, but it emerges from relational and dynamic processes.

The ludic therapy in a Phenomenological-Existential perspective is conceived as a psychotherapeutic process in which, the listening and talking, mediated by playing activities, allow the child to deal with their grief/suffering. This study is based on the need to broaden the understanding of this modality of clinical intervention by emphasizing the speech of the protagonists in the process: children in therapy. The objective was to understand the ludic therapy from the children s perspective, knowing the meanings assigned to the therapeutic process, to the psychologist and to the involvement of the children in clinical consultations. The main ideas that underlie this research are presented in three theoretical chapters covering, respectively, the suffering of children and the demand for psychotherapy, the Phenomenological-Existential clinical psychology, and the psychotherapy for children, in Brazil, under this theoretical-methodological approach. The study was qualitative, on a phenomenological basis, and included six children as participants, aged between six and ten years, undergoing ludic therapy for at least six months, and referred by their own therapists. In the research s corpus construction, individual meetings were held and mediated by tools to support expressiveness (ludic and pictures/figures boxes), added by the storytelling of an incomplete story about a child s visit to the therapy session, and the request for the elaboration of a message to be passed to a child who will go to see a psychologist. The analysis of the data was based on a variant of the phenomenological method proposed by Amedeo Giorgi. The results reveal a lack of knowledge by the children about the psychologist s activities. Thus, the children develop fantasies about this intervention modality because of lack of information. These observations are consistent with the historical meanings assigned to clinical psychology, involving ideas of normality and guilt. The meanings associated with the motives for a referral to a psychologist highlight the conflict "be a problem versus having a problem" and an elitist conception of clinical psychology. Children understand the characteristics of the therapeutic process, such as the specifics of the therapist-client relationship and the notion of freedom. They also demonstrate remarkable pleasure in the therapeutic process. Finally, it was concluded that the meanings attributed to the ludic therapy by the children are consistent with that proposed in the literature about the children s psychotherapy process in the Phenomenological-Existential perspective. Moreover, the relevance of both the children s experience in the therapeutic setting and the meanings of these proceedings understood by the children are highlighted by the listening to the protagonists in the ludic therapeutic process. The comprehension of these aspects and their transference from the clients experience to the reflective field, promote advances in the understanding of child psychotherapy and indicate the need for further studies with children using this approach.
Elas demonstram, ainda, not?vel prazer no processo terap?utico.

meanings, and relevance to digital games. Investigating the theme and perspectives ranging from the classical Renaissance proposal to an approach to hermeneutic phenomenology, it meets the approach of current concept artists for games. In this sense, it carries out the positions of concept artists for games that present a variety and a rich panorama of the issue in the field of the artistic production oriented to digital games. From there the research goes towards the problem of concept art in two significant digital productions. The first of them, consecrated in the PlayStation platform amongst the entertainment, shows that it is possible that digital games can be oriented to an artistic perception within the field of the entertainment media positioning itself next to blockbuster productions. The second case, in reverse of the first one, shows the importance of the concept art within the academic research developed in research groups inside Brazilian universities. The research closes its perspective analyzing the position of the artists, the concept art inside the international industry field and its academic perspectives showing its relevance and concluding by its own defense to promote the culture and the thought of the poetic perspective in games

Abstract:

Abstract:
The event of breast cancer can be traumatic for who experiences it, impacting and changing these womens quality of life, mainly in terms of the organization of daily family and social life, implying the need to adapt to new conditions of existence and to the transformations that may result in a new personal and social identity. At the time of the diagnosis, several feelings are experienced, among which despair, anguish and fear of the unknown stand out, being the impact of the diagnosis often considered as an extremely significant experience that influences the entire process until the rehabilitation of the patient. In addition, health professionals are considered important elements in coping with cancer, especially when they inform about the disease and its evolution, as well as when they comfort and encourage women during the diagnosis and treatment. The objective of this study is to understand the experience of the communication process of the breast cancer diagnosis from the perspective of the woman and the physician diagnosing the condition. This is a descriptive, exploratory and prospective qualitative research. Six women who underwent diagnostic investigation and who subsequently received confirmation of breast cancer and six oncologists who are responsible for communicating the diagnosis collaborated with the study. The collaborators were recruited at the Department of Mastology and Gynecological Oncology of the Gynecology and Obstetrics Service at the Hospital das Clínicas of the Ribeirão Preto Medical School. The instruments used were: Sociodemographic Data Form of the LEPPS, open interview, developed based on a guiding question; and a field diary. The data analysis was based on the theoretical and methodological framework of Phenomenology. The results show that both patients and physicians go through the communication of the breast cancer diagnosis as a complex experience. At the same time as the physicians see themselves as transmitters of the bad news, they understand their role as the people who also offer possibilities of life for the sick person. As for the women, it can be appointed that the experience of this process is liminal, nonlinear and of singular significance, through which they go through different paradoxical feelings, such as fear, uncertainty, anguish, sadness, tranquility, hope and indifference, which arouse different ways (denial, coping and acceptance) of dealing with the particularities of the illness. It is concluded that, for both patients and physicians, it is important to value the singularities in their modes of existence, aiming to provide space for the manifestation of subjectivities, in order to achieve integral care from the perspectives of those who care and those who receive care
