Abstract:
1. The ability of rats to localize sounds in space was determined before and after cutting of the commissure of Probst. The commissure of Probst was transected at its midline decussation with a microknife inserted into the brain according to stereotaxic coordinates. Six animals were tested after extensive lesions that destroyed all of the commissure of Probst fibers. An additional animal was tested after a smaller lesion that destroyed most of the commissure of Probst but left some fibers intact. Three control animals were tested before and after surgical intervention that did not involve the commissure of Probst. 2. The animals were tested in a semicircular apparatus with loudspeakers located on the right or left of midline. They were trained to make a response toward the left or right in the direction of the active loudspeaker. Correct reponses were rewarded by delivery of a small quantity of water from spouts located at +30 and -30 degrees azimuth. Tests of sound localization were conducted with a single broadband noise burst, 45 ms in duration, presented at the beginning of each trial. The position of the active loudspeakers was varied from trial to trial and performance at different speaker angles was calculated to determine psychometric curves. Minimum audible angles were estimated by interpolation from a performance level of 75% correct. 3. After postoperative testing was completed, the effectiveness of the lesions was confirmed by cell counts to determine the extent of retrograde degeneration in the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (DNLL). These data showed that most of the contralaterally projecting neurons in DNLL underwent retrograde degeneration and the number of neurons was reduced by 60-65%. Ninety to 95% of the contralaterally projecting neurons in the DNLL disappeared within 7 wk after transection of the commissure of Probst. 4. The condition of damaged commissural fibers was further confirmed by tract tracing methods. A unilateral Fluoro-Gold injection was made into the inferior colliculus and the auditory brain stem was examined for retrograde label. No labeled neurons were seen in the contralateral DNLL in cases with complete transection of the commissure of Probst. In addition, the distribution of Fluoro-Gold labeling in other brain stem auditory structures was similar to that seen in normal animals. This result confirmed that the transection of the commissure of Probst was successful and that projections to other auditory structures remained intact. 5. Transection of the commissure of Probst produced marked deficits in midline sound localization. Although sound localization was still possible, there was a degradation in the ability of rats to localize sounds in the horizontal plane. The mean minimum audible angle was elevated 22.1 degrees after destruction of the commissure of Probst compared with a shift of only 2.0 degrees in control animals.

Abstract:
Sclerotinia stem rot (SSR) is one of the most important diseases of soybean in the United States. Five maturity group III cultivars, Asgrow A3304 STS (A3304), Pioneer Brand 9342 (P9342), Pioneer Brand 9381 (P9381), Probst, and Yale, grown in fields in east-central Illinois, were used to determine the relationship of SSR incidence to yield, 100-seed weight, seed protein and oil content, visual seed quality, and seed germination. In addition, the number of sclerotia in seed samples and the seedborne incidence of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum were determined. For each cultivar, at least 23 two-row plots, 3 m long, that represented a range of SSR incidence from low to high, were used to count the number of plants with and without SSR stem symptoms and were used to estimate yields and evaluate seed quality. Disease incidence ranged from 2 to 45% for Probst, 0 to 65% for P9381, 0 to 68% for P9342, 1 to 93% for Yale, and 0 to 95% for A3304. Regression of yields on SSR incidences for each cultivar was significant (P < 0.05); for every 10% increase in SSR incidence, yields were reduced by 147, 194, 203, 254, and 263 kg/ha for Probst, A3304, P9342, Yale, and P9381, respectively. Disease incidence was negatively correlated (P < 0.05) with seed germination for all cultivars but Probst, and to oil content and seed weight for P9381 and Yale. Disease incidence was positively correlated (P < 0.05) with seed quality for all cultivars and to the number of sclerotia in harvested seeds for P9342, P9381, and Probst. The seedborne incidence of S. sclerotiorum was 0.3, 0.3, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.7% in A3304, P9381, Yale, Probst, and P9342, respectively, and represents a significant potential for further spread of this pathogen and disease.

Abstract:
FEDER, PI17/00246 Buckley, P. Abstract:
In order to study the molecular basis of haemophilia A, DNA from 26 haemophilia A patients (8 severe with inhibitors, 13 severe noninhibitors and 5 mild/moderate) was screened by the Southern blotting method with FVIII cDNA probe A (a i.7kb Kpnl cDNA fragment that spans exons 1 to 12) probe B (a 4.7kb EcoRI cDNA fragment that contains exons 14 to 25 and part of exon 26) probe C (a 1.8kb EcoRI cDNA fragment that contains the remainder of exon 26 and probe D (an Apal/EcoRI 783bp cDNA fragment that includes all of exons 22 to 25 and parts of exons 21 and 26). All cDNA probes were kindly provided by Genetics Institutes Inc.No large structural alterations of the FVIII gene were detected in any of the patients. However altered TaqI restriction sites within the coding regions of 3 patients were observed. DNA from patient 1 with severe haemophilia (VIIIAg < 0.1 u/dl, inhibitor negative) when probed with probe C showed a substitution of the normal 2.6kb TaqI and 4.5kb EcoRI fragments with novel 12kb TaqI and 11.5kb EcoRI fragments respectively. In addition he showed the normal 4kb Bglll fragment with probe C. A point mutation or small deletion (50bp is suspected to be present within exon 26.Patient 2 had severe haemophilia and a FVIII inhibitor of 12 units (Bethesda). DNA from patient 2 when probed with probe B revealed a novel 5.0kb TaqI fragment instead of the normal 2.2kb and 2.8kb fragments. The location of the altered Taq I restriction site within the coding region of exon 18 was confirmed with intragenomic probe pi 14.12 that includes exons 17and 18 (kindly provided by Genentech Inc.) A family study with this mutation specific fragment showed the patients sister and mother to be carriers.DNA from Patient 3 (severe haemophilia, factor VIII inhibitor 33 units) when probed independently with probes B and D revealed the absence of the normal 2.4kb and 1.4kb TaqI fragments and the generation of a novel 3.8kb TaqI fragment suggesting an alteration of the TaqI site within the coding region of exon 23.The detection of altered TaqI restriction sites in 3of our patients is further evidence that 'CG' dinucleotide sequences might be relative hot-spots for mutation when occurring within coding sequences of genes.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: We performed a meta-analysis to investigate, whether the value of BNP/NT-proBNP as predictors of long-term prognosis differentiates in cohorts with and without heart failure. Condition being studied: The standardised cut-off levels for BNP and NT-proBNP that are currently used in clinical practice are based on the stratification of patients with heart failure. In patients without heart failure, however, relatively lower values are observed. This leads to the assumption that the prognosis for patients with BNP/NT-proBNP levels at the upper limit of the normal range might be worse than the prognosis for patients with BNP/NT-proBNP levels lower in the range, even if both are determined to be within the normal boundaries. However, a specific cut-off level of BNP/NT-proBNP for the prediction of prognosis in patients without heart failure has not yet been determined. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis of existing studies investigating the value of BNP/NT-proBNP as a predictor of long-term prognosis in patients with heart failure and the general population.

Koessl, Gerald. The system of limited-profit housing in Austria. Liège: CIRIEC, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.25518/ciriec.wp202204.

Abstract:
Limited-profit housing plays a significant role in Austria’s housing market. Around a quarter of all households live in homes owned or managed by a limited-profit housing association (LPHA). These associations are characterised by a distinct business model, based on the premise of cost-recovery and revolving funds. By deviating both from the logic of for-profit housing and from public housing, LPHAs occupy a distinct ‘Third Sector’ role in Austria’s housing market. This paper describes the key mechanisms and principles of limited-profit housing, including how they are financed, how rents are set, what components are included in price calculations and how they use revolving funds to finance future affordable housing construction. The paper also elaborates the impact of the limited-profit business model on rent levels and draws on a recent study to demonstrate their wider economic impacts.
