Full textThe object of the research was the realization, in a participant perspective, of a permanent reading education laboratory in primary and secondary schools. The aim was to bring a methodological and didactic innovation regarding reading education, through a semistructured form of learning that involved teachers first and foremost. This goal has been divided into three main objectives: to design and implement a training course for in-service teachers, aimed at developing skills in methodologies, strategies, techniques and tools for motivated and competent reader education in the field of design curriculum; establish a community of professional practice for continuous training, self-training, exchange and sharing of specific teaching resources from a participatory planning perspective; to build an integrated learning environment where to connect practices, processes, reading resources to Digital Literacy indicators (Ala-Mutka, 2011), through the integration of ICT and 2.0 tools combining hard and soft skills. The protagonists of this research, which took the form of action research with mixed methods, were the teachers. In terms of participatory planning, the idea of long-term support within schools has been developed to allow teachers to have a continuous reference about reading education and related aspects. The choice of the most suitable support has branched out on three levels: teacher training, classroom reading projects and digital sharing environment, and took the form of the laboratory (De Bartolomeis, 1978; Travaglini, 2009; Frabboni, 2005; Lanfranconi Betti, 2005). The research had as expected results then achieved: a greater use of the non-text book, a greater awareness of the potential of the book object and an increase in reading education activities. Problems, on the other hand, have been detected regarding the expectation of sharing material (online).

Full textObjective: Endothelial dysfunction is the early and fundamental step in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. It has been indicated as one of the precocious vascular abnormalities in apparently healthy first-degree relatives of type 2 diabetic patients.(FDR). N-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA n-3), such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoico acid (DHA), have a wide range of anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of this study is that a supplementation of n3-PUFA might be effective to improve the endothelial dysfunction in FDR subjects at higher risk of developing atherosclerosis. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We carried out a randomized, controlled with placebo, double blind, parallel-groups clinical trial. The study included 70 subjects (age 30.5 ± 5.2 years, 30 women e 40 men), all first-degree relatives of type 2 diabetic patients. The subjects were randomly assigned to assume placebo (n = 34) or n-3 PUFA (n= 36) for 12 weeks. Endothelial function was assessed by brachial artery reactivity test (BART), measuring the flow-mediated dilatation (FMD). Weight, BMI, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and laboratory parameters (lipid profile, fasting plasma glucose, insulin, and C-peptide, TNF-α, adiponectin, hs-PCR) were assessed at baseline and after treatment. At the beginning of the study, each subject underwent a standard oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). RESULTS: Upon OGTT we identified 53 normoglycemic subjects (NGT) and 17 subjects with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). At baseline, the subjects IGT were older and presented significant higher levels of BMI, triglycerides, and fasting insulin, as well an increased insulin resistance, and a worse endothelial function, compared with NGT individuals. After treatment, we found only little if any change in metabolic and biomarkers levels of the participants of the placebo group (NGT and IGT); on the contrary, the n-3 PUFA group showed some difference respect to the baseline characteristics: the triglycerides and the TNF-α levels were significantly decrease, the adiponectin was increase, and the endothelial function showed a significant improvement. The changing of TNF-α levels emerged as the unique independent and significant predictor of the improvement of the FMD after the period of assumption of n-3 PUFA. CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that the N-3 PUFA oral supplementation is associated with an improvement of endothelial function via decreasing TNF-alpha in NGT and IGT subjects offspring of patients with Type 2 Diabetes.

Full textThis research focuses on the representation of the Arabic-Islamic culture in the history textbooks of the first grade secondary school. The fact that the world today is characterized, more than ever, by continuous and inevitable encounters among people from different backgrounds requires a strong commitment to promote peaceful intercultural relations. For this purpose, it is believed that the contents of textbooks have an important role. Hence, the goal is to verify if the textbooks convey an effective education to know and to respect other cultures and religions, to promote intercultural dialogue; and to overcome ethnocentrism, stereotypes and prejudices. So, it was necessary to verify – in the sample of textbooks examined – the presence o any recurring prejudices, stereotypes and ethnocentric perspectives that can be constructed, consolidated, repeated and transmitted, consciously or unconsciously, through statements or images that illustrate the Arabic-Islamic culture. The first part of the thesis, the theoretical one, is dedicated to two themes: the first theme concerns the relationship between East and West and the representation of the others and the second theme concerns the status of Muslim women between stereotypes and reality. The second part, the empirical one, is dedicated to the qualitative content analysis of history textbooks. The analysis results show clear interest, by the authors and editors of the textbooks, for the theme of Arabic-Islamic culture. In spite of that, the texts may contain, although to different extents, stereotypes, generalizations and partial, inaccurate or incorrect information about the Arabic-Islamic culture and about Arabs or Muslims.

Full textThe emergence of writing has changed the way we live, providing a tool for structuring thinking; transferring what is in memory to an external medium; dialoguing and debating with those who share the same culture and conventions. On the other hand, writing is not a simple task, especially for the beginner student: cognitively, because it requires knowing how to manage several processes and strategies; linguistically, because it is necessary to use several linguistic structures to maintain surface compactness and to ensure text continuity; socially, because it needs to adapt to the recipients. If writing is difficult for all learners, it's even more so for first or second-generation foreigners, whose presence is massive in many schools. For these reasons, the school environment is renewing its methods and proposals with an ever-greater push. This research focuses on one of these educational proposals: the project Osservare l'interlingua (Observing interlanguage). The area of intervention is language education, with a particular focus on writing. The Project was born in 2007 to promote an active, inclusive, and difference-respectful education, so that everyone can acquire the necessary strategies to communicate effectively. In the early years, the Project's activities were aimed only at multilingual pupils, to encourage their linguistic and affective inclusion. Subsequently, the educational objectives were extended to entire classes, to propose even more inclusive and participatory activities. The proposed educational paths, combining the interlanguage approach to language teaching with the principles of cooperative learning and process writing, educate students to perceive writing as an active and ingenious process, to acquire responsibility towards classwork and more abilities in communicating with classmates. The Project not only aims to linguistic development but also refers to transversal objectives, such as the setting up of positive and motivated attitudes towards writing and the construction of a serene and welcoming class climate and good relationships between students. Given both Project’s linguistic and transversal objectives, this research aims to analyze the effects this has produced on classes that have experienced it over a long period (from three to five years). The sample includes experimental classes (five 5th grade and two 8th grade classes) and control classes (four 5th grade and two 8th grade classes), for a total of 226 students. The groups were compared on writing quality, attitudes and motivation towards writing, and class well-being and cohesion. The instruments used were narrative texts written by the students (analyzed through holistic and analytical procedures), four self-perception questionnaires (three on motivation and writing and one on class belonging and well-being), and a sociometric questionnaire (analyzed through structural indices of Social Network Analysis). Given that the Project promotes students' inclusion from its very beginning, the data were analyzed in three formats: whole groups, multilingual students only (active speakers of one or more languages besides Italian), and monolingual students only (Italian-only speakers). The intention is to observe whether the results achieved in entire classes reappear in the two separate subgroups, particularly the multilingual pupils, and to understand if the Project’s methodology is effective in reducing inequalities and generating inclusion.

Full textThe Italian Ministry of Education (MIUR) student register records that today in Italy more than one out of ten students is not an Italian citizen, although the majority of them were born there. Several statistical surveys indicate that "foreign" students, when compared to native students, show a poorer performance in Italian and in academic achievement. This exploratory fieldwork carried out in schools in Turin (5th to 8th grade) analyzed data obtained through semi-structured interviews with 121 students and 26 parents as well as 141 questionnaires filled in by 27 teachers of Italian and family language. It showed that many students are "bilingual natives", as they grow up acquiring both Italian and another language; however, despite the fact that the interviewees rate polyglottism positively, schools don't usually offer targeted support in either language. Within the cohort the broadest range of competences in Italian are found first among those with an Italian-speaking parent, then among those who arrived in Italy at pre-school age attending kindergarten there; this latter group shows higher competences than those born in Italy attending nursery there, as also in the INVALSI tests. As far as family language is concerned, data illustrate that its teaching increases its competences without affecting those in Italian: quite the opposite in fact. These results confirm the remarkable role played by the "other" language in successful language education. MIUR is therefore called upon to include also linguistic data in its student register, so as to redefine its curricula according to EU Guidelines, and to identify specific procedures and resources for multilingual classes. This new policy would reduce the current cost of placing students in a lower grade, grade retention and drop-outs, and would promote school success, equal opportunities and multilingualism, with positive consequences both for the individuals and for the national economy.
Numerose indagini statistiche mostrano come gli allievi "stranieri" presentino, rispetto a quelli italiani, ridotte competenze in italiano e minore successo scolastico.
