Abstract:
Dealing with a slowdown in economic growth is something that no country wants to be concerned with. Neither do countries want to face the reality of widening gaps in income or the realities that attend changes in the climate that we are experiencing in the world today. This study focuses on these issues and makes an attempt to find solutions to them. First there are discussed the negative impacts that climate change has on economic growth and income inequality. It is the author’s contention that if a solution can be found to the various problems connected to climate change, solutions to these other problems will be found. The paper ends with a discussion of the role that business can play in finding solutions to the problems regarding climate change.

Abstract:
Abstract This contribution explores the assertion that climate change may be described as a “wicked problem.” It notes that the term was introduced in the context of the management sciences where a managerial ethos prevailed and where moral connotations were excluded. Subsequent references to climate change as a wicked problem maintained both these features. Yet, if climate change not only poses technological, economic, and political problems but also has moral and, indeed, spiritual challenges—as is widely maintained—then such moral connotations cannot be avoided. The description of a problem as wicked then becomes part of the problem. It is argued that the term is best understood as one used in jest, so that if we seek to define a problem’s wickedness in a conceptually precise way, we are missing the joke. The major moral dimensions of the challenges posed by climate changes should be taken seriously, but perhaps there is no need to take the term wicked problems all that seriously. What should not be laughed off is the managerial ethos that presumes that the challenges posed by climate changes can be addressed “exactly” through climate engineering or even social engineering.

Abstract:
Although best known for his perceived critiques of Christianity in his 1967 “Historical Roots” article, I draw upon Lynn Townsend White, jr.’s lesser-known texts and unpublished archival materials to argue that White made a significant, constructive contribution to environmental ethics. Through his rejection of anthropocentric and prudential forms of ethics, White proposed an ethic of compassion for nature rooted in his notion of a “spiritual democracy of all God’s creatures.” This ethical model, referred to here as Christian ecocentrism, is offered as a framework for Christian reflection and as a means for changing attitudes and behaviors on the “wicked problem” of climate change.

Abstract:
The floating TI problem will also have an impact on policies on environmental conservation, fisheries and cultural change. Subjectivity of policy issues. This research approach is socio-legal. Research with such an approach, views the law in its complex face, not only stops at the norm, but also targets how the process of formation is up to its implementation. TI floating problems must be identified related to issues of authority, economic and environmental issues. With this concept, this research was carried out by conducting a step review of norms for the first stage. In the next stage, a search for certain norms related to floating TI is carried out the act of number 4 ‘ 2009 on Minerals and Coal. It was only analyzed by offering how floating law enforcement related to IT in the Bangka Regency area. Policy problems are only possible when humans make judgments about the desire to change some problem situations. The policy problem is the result / product of human subjective assessment, the policy problem can also be accepted as legitimate definitions of objective social conditions and hence policy problems are understood, maintained and changed socially; and there are many solutions to a problem as there are many definitions of the problem. Problems and solutions are in constant changes.

Abstract:
Invention activities challenge students to tackle problems that superficially appear unrelated to the course material but illustrate underlying fundamental concepts that are fundamental to material that will be presented. During our invention activities in a first-year biology class, students were presented with problems that are parallel to those that living cells must solve, in weekly sessions over a 13-wk term. We compared students who participated in the invention activities sessions with students who participated in sessions of structured problem solving and with students who did not participate in either activity. When faced with developing a solution to a challenging and unfamiliar biology problem, invention activity students were much quicker to engage with the problem and routinely provided multiple reasonable hypotheses. In contrast the other students were significantly slower in beginning to work on the problem and routinely produced relatively few ideas. We suggest that the invention activities develop a highly valuable skill that operates at the initial stages of problem solving.

Abstract:
Abstract:Recent research with computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MR) of the brain has revealed a type of tissue change for which no fitting term exists. The change appears as areas of decreased density on CT and changed signals of the white matter in MR images. Because neither a definite pathological change nor a specific clinical deficit has been linked with the CT and MR changes, a designation is required that limits itself to describing the changes themselves. We propose “leuko-araiosis”. The Greek root leuko-, signifying “white”, has found wide usage in modern medical terminology: e.g. leucine, leukocyte, leukorrhoea. Also several precedents exist for its application to the white matter of the central nervous system: e.g. leukoencephalitis, leukomyelitis, leukotomy. Araios is an adjective meaning “rarefied”, and the suffix -osis converts the adjective to a noun meaning “rarefaction, diminution of density”, a word used in the Hippocratic Collection to describe a state of excessive porosity of the lung.A descriptive term precludes premature presuppositions and encourages the search for causes.

Abstract:
Reliable software is the need of the hour especially as it is an indispensable part of our new technological world. Many SRGMs have been proposed considering the change point approach in literature. Change point is defined as the point where the fault detection rate changes, it happens due to number of reasons viz, proficiency of the testing team, nature of faults to be detected etc. In this paper we develop a generalized modeling framework incorporating change point discussing the changing nature of fault detection rate and form a related release time problem which minimizes the total cost of the software and maintains a desirable level of reliability. A numerical example is given for the release problem and the proposed models are validated on real software error data to show their goodness of fit and applicability.

n the fall of 2003, I had the opportunity to conduct some research on the student teaching process in Japan. During my seven weeks of research at the junior high school affiliated with Ehime University in Matsuyama, Japan, I observed mathematics lessons taught by student teachers as well as many more lessons taught by experienced teachers. The basis for most of these lessons was wonderfully rich mathematics problems. In these lessons a problem was posed to students, time was given for them to explore it, and then a discussion of the solutions to the problem took place. A detailed description of similar problem-based lessons can be found in The Teaching Gap (Stigler and Hiebert 1999) and The Open-Ended Approach: A New Proposal for Teaching Mathematics (Becker and Shimada 1997).
