Abstract:
It is widely believed that participation in organized sports and physical activity offers protection against the negative social influences that can lead to problem behaviour and experimentation with tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs. It also widely believed that youth who engage in regular physical activity are more likely to adopt other healthy lifestyle behaviours. This chapter critically evaluates these assertions by summarizing the empirical research evidence on the relationship between sport, physical activity, and nine other health behaviours in youth. It shows that sports participation and physical activity are indeed related to other health behaviours, but the strength and direction of the associations are dependent on the health behaviour under examination, the child’s age, gender, race/ethnicity, and the nature of the sport or physical activity.

Abstract:
Given the abstract parallel between fitness and utility, it is natural to think that adaptive behaviour and rational behaviour will typically coincide, as many authors assume. However, a series of arguments, found in the philosophy, behavioural ecology, and economics literatures, suggest that in some cases the adaptive and the rational can part ways: evolution favours behaviours that violate the principles of rational choice. These ‘parting-of-ways’ arguments pose a challenge to agential thinking in biology—that is, to the idea that an evolved organism can be treated as akin to a rational agent pursuing a goal. However, in many cases the parting may be eliminated by suitable choice of utility function or fitness measure, or by reframing the decision problem.

Abstract:
Misbehavior and disruption in the operating room are an all too common problem. Disruptive behaviors have been observed and experienced by all members of the operating room team, and these behaviors need to be addressed in a timely and appropriate fashion. Sometimes, hospital administrators and hospital leadership know about these problems but do not act, and thus they may be complicit in allowing these problems to continue. This chapter reviews the potential reasons for disruptive behavior among nurses and physicians and provides explanations for organizational reluctance to deal with disruptive behaviors, as well as recommendations to address these issues effectively.
