Zurich, Switzerland: International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.2749/sed019.

Full text
Abstract:

The seismic resilience of new and existing structures is a key priority for the protection of human lives and the reduction of economic losses in earthquake prone areas. The modern seismic codes have focused on the upgrade of the structural performance of the new and existing structures. However, in many cases it is preferrable to mitigate the effects of the earthquakes by reducing the induced loads in the structures using seismic isolation and response control devices. The limited expertise in the selection and design of the appropriate system for new and existing structures is the main challenge for an extensive use of seismic isolation and response control systems in practice.

This document aims to provide a practical guide by presenting a collection of the most commonly used seismic isolation and response control systems and a critical evaluation of the main characteristics of these systems. Comparisons of the key parameters of the design processes for new buildings with seismic isolation are presented, while the application of seismic isolation systems and response control systems for the retrofitting of existing structures is also examined, followed by various case studies from Greece, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, and Turkey.

Abstract:
This chapter, which argues that the structure of the Web reflects the offline world, making it a valuable lens for exploring society, introduces the theories and issues which make general observations about the Web and then provides examples of investigations into particular topics, such as academic web use. The Web offers unique entrée to free information from Wikipedia to news websites and from government information portals to search engines. Moreover, the two broad approaches to investigating society on the Web are reported, which are based around link analysis and Web 2.0 investigations. Web 2.0 has spawned broad research to probe its effect on several aspects of society. The publishing of personal information on the Web, particularly on the social web, appears likely to continue and expand.

Rickles, Dean. Spaces. Edited by Paul Humphreys. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199368815.013.31.

Full text
Abstract:
The concept of space has many distinct uses in science. Not only does it denote the three-dimensional physical space we walk through (and our mental representations thereof), but also abstract spaces of various kinds and higher dimensionality. Spaces provide a means of systematically and exhaustively representing possible distinct states of physical or abstract systems, allowing one to chart the motions, relationships, and other qualities that they might undergo, enter into, or possess. Such spaces can encode the possibilities of physical systems relative to laws of nature allowing us both to probe modal aspects of the world and to discover symmetries and redundancies in a theory (identifying “intrinsic structure”). This chapter reviews these various elements, giving many examples from distinct fields and attempts to draw some broad lessons on the significance of this more general concept of space.
