Leo, Wei Wei. "Customer-oriented deviance (COD) : a conceptualisation, development and validation of a behavioural measure." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2010. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/32075/1/Wei_Wei_Leo_Thesis.pdf.

Abstract:
Frontline employee behaviours are recognised as vital for achieving a competitive advantage for service organisations. The services marketing literature has comprehensively examined ways to improve frontline employee behaviours in service delivery and recovery. However, limited attention has been paid to frontline employee behaviours that favour customers in ways that go against organisational norms or rules. This study examines these behaviours by introducing a behavioural concept of Customer-Oriented Deviance (COD). COD is defined as, “frontline employees exhibiting extra-role behaviours that they perceive to defy existing expectations or prescribed rules of higher authority through service adaptation, communication and use of resources to benefit customers during interpersonal service encounters.” This thesis develops a COD measure and examines the key determinants of these behaviours from a frontline employee perspective. Existing research on similar behaviours that has originated in the positive deviance and pro-social behaviour domains has limitations and is considered inadequate to examine COD in the services context. The absence of a well-developed body of knowledge on non-conforming service behaviours has implications for both theory and practice. The provision of ‘special favours’ increases customer satisfaction but the over-servicing of customers is also counterproductive for the service delivery and costly for the organisation. Despite these implications of non-conforming service behaviours, there is little understanding about the nature of these behaviours and its key drivers. This research builds on inadequacies in prior research on positive deviance, pro-social and pro-customer literature to develop the theoretical foundation of COD. The concept of positive deviance which has predominantly been used to study organisational behaviours is applied within a services marketing setting. Further, it addresses previous limitations in pro-social and pro-customer behavioural literature that has examined limited forms of behaviours with no clear understanding on the nature of these behaviours. Building upon these literature streams, this research adopts a holistic approach towards the conceptualisation of COD. It addresses previous shortcomings in the literature by providing a well bounded definition, developing a psychometrically sound measure of COD and a conceptually well-founded model of COD. The concept of COD was examined across three separate studies and based on the theoretical foundations of role theory and social identity theory. Study 1 was exploratory and based on in-depth interviews using the Critical Incident Technique (CIT). The aim of Study 1 was to understand the nature of COD and qualitatively identify its key drivers. Thematic analysis was conducted to analyse the data and the two potential dimensions of COD behaviours of Deviant Service Adaptation (DSA) and Deviant Service Communication (DSC) were revealed in the analysis. In addition, themes representing the potential influences of COD were broadly classified as individual factors, situational factors, and organisational factors. Study 2 was a scale development procedure that involved the generation and purification of items for the measure based on two student samples working in customer service roles (Pilot sample, N=278; Initial validation sample, N=231). The results for the reliability and Exploratory Factor Analyses (EFA) on the pilot sample suggested the scale had poor psychometric properties. As a result, major revisions were made in terms of item wordings and new items were developed based on the literature to reflect a new dimension, Deviant Use of Resources (DUR). The revised items were tested on the initial validation sample with the EFA analysis suggesting a four-factor structure of COD. The aim of Study 3 was to further purify the COD measure and test for nomological validity based on its theoretical relationships with key antecedents and similar constructs (key correlates). The theoretical model of COD consisting of nine hypotheses was tested on a retail and hospitality sample of frontline employees (Retail N=311; Hospitality N=305) of a market research panel using an online survey. The data was analysed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). The results provided support for a re-specified second-order three-factor model of COD which consists of 11 items. Overall, the COD measure was found to be reliable and valid, demonstrating convergent validity, discriminant validity and marginal partial invariance for the factor loadings. The results showed support for nomological validity, although the antecedents had differing impact on COD across samples. Specifically, empathy and perspective-taking, role conflict, and job autonomy significantly influenced COD in the retail sample, whereas empathy and perspective-taking, risk-taking propensity and role conflict were significant predictors in the hospitality sample. In addition, customer orientation-selling orientation, the altruistic dimension of organisational citizenship behaviours, workplace deviance, and social desirability responding were found to correlate with COD. This research makes several contributions to theory. First, the findings of this thesis extend the literature on positive deviance, pro-social and pro-customer behaviours. Second, the research provides an empirically tested model which describes the antecedents of COD. Third, this research contributes by providing a reliable and valid measure of COD. Finally, the research investigates the differential effects of the key antecedents in different service sectors on COD. The research findings also contribute to services marketing practice. Based on the research findings, service practitioners can better understand the phenomenon of COD and utilise the measurement tool to calibrate COD levels within their organisations. Knowledge on the key determinants of COD will help improve recruitment and training programs and drive internal initiatives within the firm.

Abstract:
Decompilation, or reverse compilation, takes a computer program and produces high-level code that works like the original source code. This makes it easier to understand a computer program when source code is not available. However, there are very few tools for decompilation available today. This report describes the design and implementation of Desquirr, a decompilation plug-in for Interactive Disassembler Pro. Desquirr has an object-oriented design and performs basic decompilation of programs running on Intel x86 processors. The low-level analysis uses knowledge about specialized compiler constructs, called idioms, to perform a more accurate decompilation. Desquirr implements data flow analysis, meaning the conversion from primitive machine code instructions into code in a high-level language. The major part of the data flow analysis is the Register Copy Propagation which builds high-level expressions from primitive instructions. Control flow analysis, meaning to restore high-level language constructs such as if/else and for loops, is not implemented. A high level representation of a piece of machine code contains the same information as an assembly language representation of the same machine code, but in a format that is easier to comprehend. Symbols such as ?*? and ?+? are used in high-level language expressions, compared to instructions such as ?mul? and ?add? in assembly language. Two small test cases which compares decompiled code with assembly language shows promising results in reducing the amount of information needed to comprehend a program.

Abstract:
The work presented in this thesis aims to develop a new architecture for video surveillance systems. Firstly, a literature review has led to classify the existing systems based on their applications level which dependents directly on the performed analytical functions. We, also, noticed that the usual systems treat all captured data while, actually, a small part of the scenes are useful for analysis. Hence, we extended the common architecture of surveillance systems with a pre-analysis phase that extracts and simplifies the regions of interest with keeping the important characteristics. Two different methods for preanalysis were proposed : a spatio-temporal filtering and a modeling technique for moving objects. We contributed, too, by introducing the concept of application-oriented scalability through a multi-level application architecture for surveillance systems. The different applications levels can be reached incrementally to meet the progressive needs of the enduser. An example of video surveillance system respecting this architecture and using the preanalysis methods was proposed

Abstract:
This research aimed at studying the facilitating pro-environmental behavior problem by approaching new pro-environmental interventions. The following elements make this study particularly relevant: a) the actual debate concerning the impact of scientific and technological innovations and b) the consideration of new emotional research findings, which stress that emotion is an essential part of information processing. However, the role of emotions is still largely absent from most pro-environmental studies. This situation highlights the importance of conceiving personal and professional initiatives aimed at encouraging reflection and supporting proenvironmental behaviors research while focusing on emotional issues. The study involved an interpretative approach of a qualitative nature, organized in two complementary phases. The first phase evaluated the possible impact of the purposed research. It involved different collaborations and the first experimental research study was implemented as a proof-of-concept approach. In addition, this phase research advanced a new model of proenvironmental behavior and a design framework. The second phase of the study, motivated by the results of the first phase, led to advancing emotion-oriented interventions scenarios and also planning and implementing their evaluation. This initiative showed two technological opportunities to consider for future developments: Affective images rewarding systems using digital material and sensorial feedback tools using non-digital material. The planned qualitative research included questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, panels, observation and the analysis of documents. The results of this study have several implications. Among the most relevant are: a) the potential of combined research methods in investigating individuals conceptions and perceptions about environmental behavior; b) the importance of discussions about new pro-environmental interventions for facilitating pro-environmental behavior; c) the importance of multi-disciplinary research approaches for advancing new technological options; and d) the relevance of considering an emotion-oriented approach.

Abstract:
Orientation in big administration buildings can be very difficult for visually impaired people. Although most of the buildings are equipped with elevators, the buttons of which are designated with Braille characters and acoustic signals, it might be very difficult for the visually impaired to actually find the particular office. Even if there were descriptions in Braille at each office door, it would prove very complicating for the visually impaired individual to localize the descriptions in the first place, especially in case of a large number of offices in the building. That may also concern other important places, such as toilets, inside a building. In this thesis, I am going to present a design proposal of a communication system which uses transceivers placed at significant points in a building and receivers placed at the end of the white cane for orientation inside a building.

Abstract:
The environmental and climate-related sustainability challenges facing the world today are complex, accelerating and urgent, and they call for change from multiple stakeholders. While governments, businesses and other institutions hold a high degree of responsibility for initiating and enabling the necessary change processes towards sustainable practices, so do also individuals and communities. Despite innovative change projects worldwide much remains to be done. However, making changes is difficult for many people, and even more so in situations characterised by uncertainty. In this study the role of future-oriented imagination in motivating changes towards sustainable lifestyles was explored through an experimental intervention design. Test group participants were exposed to a guided imagination of a sustainability scenario in the year 2028, followed by a writing assignment allowing them time to engage with how they see their own future life. The control group spent the same amount of time listening to a guided present-day reflection and writing about their current everyday life. Pre- and post-intervention, both groups completed lifestyle questionnaires. The pre-intervention questionnaire constituted the baseline assessment against which their post-intervention questionnaire results (which was asking both groups to record the lifestyle decisions they thought they would be making in the year 2028 on the same behaviours as in the pre-intervention questionnaire) were compared to check for reported degrees of changes. Besides their expected lifestyle changes, their predicted future personal change and degree of pro-environmental self-identity in the year 2028 was measured. The results show that test group participants, who were exposed to the future-oriented imagination, reported a substantially higher degree of future lifestyle changes and future pro-environmental self-identity than the control group, as well as predicting a higher degree of future personal change. Future-oriented imagination seems to be a potent pathway for eliciting future-oriented sustainability engagement while avoiding some of the risks of negative spillover. This suggests that future-oriented imagination can play an important role in developing motivation for sustainable lifestyle changes, and that it can be a complement to other psychological drivers for pro-environmental behaviours.

Abstract:
The technique of rendering a scene using the method of ray-tracing is known to produce excellent graphic quality, but is also generally computationally expensive. Most of this computation involves determining intersections between objects in the scene and ray projections. Previous work to reduce this expense has been directed towards ray oriented optimization techniques. This paper presents a different approach, one that bases pre-computation on the characteristics of the scene itself, making the results independent of the position of the observer. This means that the results of one pre-computation run can be applied to renderings of the scene from multiple view points. Using this method on a scene of random triangular planar patches, impressive reductions in the number of intersection computations was realized, along with significant, reductions in the time required to render the scene.

Abstract:
Object-Oriented Modeling (OOM) is the process of construction of systems models, through an identification and definition of a set of relating objects. These objects have a collaborative behavior according to the system requirements previously defined. This definition includes three modeling aspects or dimensions: object structural dimension, behavior dynamic dimension and requirements functional dimension. Depending on a relative importance of each dimension, three possible strategies to drive OOM are defined. The strategies are: data-driven, behavior-driven and process-driven. Process-driven strategy is obsolete. Nowadays, data-driven is the dominant strategy in the world of OOM techniques. Behavior-driven strategy suggests both internal and external system behaviors define its object structure. This idea is attractive because it allows a late encapsulation in the OOM. As explained in this work, the main advantage to use object-orientation is for implementation. So, to object-orient or not to object-orient is a design decision. If encapsulation is introduced in the very beginning of systems modeling, the structural continuity is achieved at the cost of pulling OOM closer to design. In this context, the work presents a process of systems conceptual modeling using a behavioral point of view. This process introduces object-oriented encapsulation lately as a first step in the design phase. In other words, this work is a proposal of a modeling technique under a behavior-driven strategy (focusing the dynamic aspect of the systems) with enough expression power to model information systems at conceptual level and, at the same time, to derive of an object-oriented structural representation from the dynamic models. As conceived in the proposal, a system is composed by a set of concurrent processes. Each process receives a stimuli from the environment, makes a specific treatment on it and generates a response to the environment. The external stimuli is decomposed into a set of concurrent events which are internally handled by the process. Actions internally performed by the process are composed into a response which is sent outside the process. Processes are behaviorally modeled using a proposed formalism called High-Level Statecharts (HLS). HLS is a extension of Harel's statecharts. The main extensions proposed are parameterized states using variables and generic representation of concurrent and exclusive sets of states. Process model is disintegrated into behavior units handling the same variables. The units are integrated into a life cycle model for these variables. Finally, after the modeling technique has been applied, an object-oriented structural model is obtained. This model is derived exclusively using information from the dynamic models constructed during the modeling process. Classes, objects, attributes, static associations, inheritance hierarchies and operations in the structural model are identified. Examples used in all the modeling process are taken from the standard problem of IFIP conference.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to provide a different perspective on the relations between Byzantines and the Latins, compared with the traditional Byzantine historiography which presents them in a linear way: from harmony and cooperation to great hostility, which reached its height in 1204 with the capture of Constantinople by the Crusaders and which persisted until the end of Byzantium. This study focuses on the finest analysis of the relations and perceptions of the Byzantines towards the Latins, which varied according to political, economic and cultural/religious circumstances, geographical particularities, byzantine social classes and individual interests or connections. Its main added value is the comprehensive presentation of the topic of the antilatin spirit in Byzantium as a whole, both in terms of the composition of themes and chronological duration, covering all the components and all the factors that form it and influence it, as well as all periods during which it persists. It reveals that pro-latinism was present in Byzantine society concomitant with tendencies and behaviors of antilatinism and that the Latins were in fact much more appreciated by the Byzantines than the byzantine sources of that time lead us to believe

This diploma thesis deals with an oriented graph processing applying a multi-agent system designated for traffic simulation. The thesis was written as a research study. Based on the study, a simulation environment was created able to respond to various stimuli. Meant as the agents, there are vehicles and their drivers that have various features, based on which they respond to the given stimuli. Communication is conducted via a so-called super-agent that monitors all action on the map and passes this information on particular agents. The agents are able to respond in advance to traffic jams (closures, accidents). In such situations, an algorithm designated for a new route finding is conducted. Besides the controlled ones, there can operate on the map also agents simulating common traffic.
