Abstract:
Abstract This book is about Conservation Agriculture (the use of no tillage systems) to preserve soil structure and integrity. It has become an increasingly important step towards sustainable farming. This publication brings together conservation agriculture and climate smart decision making processes for the first time, focusing on Africa. This book brings to the fore scientific and empirical evidence about Conservation Agriculture in Africa, articulated by the Second Africa Congress on Conservation Agriculture (2ACCA) held in Johannesburg in 2018. It describes how farmers in Africa are successfully adopting Conservation Agriculture as an alternative to the unsustainable conventional farming practices and as a solution to loss of agricultural productivity, soil erosion and land degradation, climate change challenges and ever-increasing food insecurity. This work discusses how Conservation Agriculture can support the implementation of the African Union's Malabo Declaration and Agenda 2063 which calls for climate smart agricultural development. It provides development-oriented case studies and scientific evidence relevant to all stakeholders in the public, private and civil sectors who are engaged in building policy, institutional and human capacity to accelerate the mainstreaming of Conservation Agriculture across Africa.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on ‘multi-stakeholderism’ in the international ICT4D arena, and particularly on discussions around Internet governance. It begins by exploring the differing roles of governments, the private sector, and civil society in general, noting that the poor are almost always absent from discussions that concern them. The evolution of so-called multi-stakeholder dialogue with respect to ICTs and telecommunications is then examined in the context of the World Summit on the Information Society in 2003 and 2005, and then in the formulation of the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015. The various institutional multi-stakeholder structures adopted by the ITU, ICANN, and the IGF are discussed to highlight the differing interests of governments, the private sector, and civil society.

Abstract:
The chapter explains how the main aim of this book is to examine the culture of a ‘compassionate organization’—an English hospice—through the eyes of its members. The investigation is related to its social and historical context and, from these data, some conclusions are suggested about the relationship between organizational culture, identity, and image. Many previous studies have examined these fundamental elements within formal (frequently private and public sector) work organizations, but none has done so within the singular (third sector) setting of a hospice—which deals with issues of care and compassion, death and dying on a daily basis. The examination of these aspects of organizational life within such a unique social institution has allowed the authors to analyse the many and varied relationships between the case Hospice and its stakeholders, including staff and volunteers, those within the wider healthcare community, and members of the general public.

Abstract:
The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 caused a seismic shift in how the United States organizes and executes the mission of securing the homeland. The creation and growth of the Department of Homeland Security is the most visible manifestation of this change. However, the homeland security discipline contemplates shared responsibilities and a unity of effort among all levels of government, the private sector, and the general public. The wide array of stakeholders, alongside an expanding definition of what constitutes homeland security, presents complex challenges for policymakers. With the perspective of the more than fifteen years that have elapsed since 9/11, this chapter examines the evolution of homeland security from a near-exclusive focus on terrorism to a broader “all hazards” approach, the relationship between homeland security and national security, the roles of leading actors, and contemporary issues.

Handbook for Communication on the Rational Use of Antimicrobials for the Containment of Resistance. Pan American Health Organization, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.37774/9789275123683.

Full text
Abstract:
The acquisition of antimicrobials without a prescription is a global concern. This practice is thriving in countries that lack adequate legislation or where regulations are not properly enforced. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and its member states in the Region of the Americas approved the Global Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance, which recognizes antimicrobial resistance as a threat to global public health that requires a multisectoral response. To tackle antimicrobial resistance, a worldwide change in behavior is needed in terms of how these drugs are used and acquired. National approaches are required to address the indiscriminate use and over-prescription of antimicrobials, and to enforce regulations on prescription and acquisition practices. The objective of this communication handbook is to help communication professionals and health program officials develop strategies to raise awareness and promote the importance of the appropriate use of antimicrobials among different stakeholders; raise public awareness about the importance of obtaining antimicrobials with a prescription in order to achieve multisectoral collaboration to ensure compliance with laws and regulations on this issue; and promote a change in behavior regarding the appropriate use and acquisition of antimicrobials by everyone involved. The target audiences for this handbook are the general population (including adolescents, children, and child caregivers/parents of children), healthcare professionals (including pharmacists and pharmacy staff), and various stakeholders (government officials, professional societies, medical organizations, the private sector, local leaders, and health-influencers, among others).

Group, World Bank. An incomplete transition: Overcoming the legacy of exclusion In South Africa. UCT Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.15641/1-77582-266-0.

Full text
Abstract:
In preparation for its 2019–2022 Country Partnership Framework with South Africa, the World Bank Group has drafted a Systematic Country Diagnostic, which forms the basis of this book. Its aim is to strengthen understanding of the constraints in achieving two goals in South Africa: to eliminate poverty by 2030, and to boost shared prosperity. These goals are aligned with South Africa’s Vision 2030 in the National Development Plan. This book is the result of consultations and conversations with the National Planning Commission, government departments, the private sector, young South Africans, and other stakeholders. It identifies five broad policy priorities: to build South Africa’s skills base; to reduce the highly skewed distribution of land and productive assets and strengthen property rights; to increase competitiveness and the country’s participation in global and regional value chains; to overcome apartheid spatial patterns; and to increase the country’s strategic adaptation to climate change and water insecurity. The key obstacle to growth, investment, and jobs that has been identified is ‘the legacy of exclusion’. Undoing this is a long-term process, but renewed commitment by the political leadership to strengthen institutions and rebuild the social contract present an enormous opportunity in achieving progress towards South Africa’s Vision 2030, and this book suggests ways to accomplish this aim.

Abraham, Sunil. First Among Equals? The Role of the State in Facilitating Internet Access and Protecting the Freedom of Expression Online in the Global South. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198805373.003.0014.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter addresses the twin challenges of facilitating access to the Internet and protecting freedom of expression online, in the Global South. Thus far, Internet regulation has been a multi-stakeholder enterprise, driven primarily by the private sector in the Global North. But this chapter contends that states exert considerable influence over whether and how the Internet is leveraged for the provision of security and justice, especially in the Global South, where the state may retain a monopoly over information flows. The chapter seeks to delineate the appropriate scope of state involvement in facilitating access to the Internet and protecting freedom of expression online in the Global South, finding that states play an important role, in concert with the private sector, regarding access and a preponderant role with respect to protecting the freedom of expression online.

Abstract:
This concluding chapter highlights some of the most important changes that need to be made in ICT4D policies and practices if these technologies are to be used to empower poor and marginalized people and communities. These include the development of innovative pro-poor technologies, a reorientation of government policy and international agendas away from economic growth and towards the reduction of inequality, the use of effective multi-sector partnerships in support of the poorest, increased dialogue between governments and citizens with respect to security and privacy, greater attention to the creation of more resilient infrastructures, enhanced learning for all stakeholders, and a comprehensive focus on working with poor people rather than for them.
