Kocsis, Alexandra. "The functions of texts in printed images : text and image in reproductive prints by Hieronymus Cock, Antonio Salamanca, and Antonio Lafreri." Thesis, University of Kent, 2017. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/69147/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides a systematic analysis of textual frameworks in reproductive prints issued by three sixteenth-century publishers. The main purpose is to highlight the role of additional texts in the process of transmitting images by significant artists to a wide circle of audiences. The analysis of the relation between text and image in single sheet prints helps to reconsider the historical function of reproductive prints by introducing a point of view that is different from earlier scholarship. I argue that textual commentaries attached to printed images were intended to take part in the art theoretical discourse of their time. Inscriptions contextualised artistic achievements and helped to form the viewer's response to the image by commenting on the artistic significance of the picture or on the excellence of the artist. The analysis of additional texts reveals the artistic and historical consciousness inherent in the prints, especially in the case of the sheets published by Hieronymus Cock. Hence, my thesis demonstrates the special role of prints in the northern art theoretical context. The present study also considers the role of prints beyond their artistic use. The "utilitarian" function of prints is explored through case studies. The connection between the culture of love and prints is examined in the chapter on Antonio Salamanca. Examples by Hieronymus Cock and Antonio Lafreri provide a comparative perspective on religious prints in the era of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. Through the case studies, my thesis points out how the historical context influenced the selection of quotations or the commission of contemporary texts, and touches upon the importance of the collaboration between humanists (art theoreticians and poets) and the protagonists of the print world. The comparative European perspective highlights the specific and general characteristics of the inscribed texts in the prints from Antwerp and Rome. While previous scholarship emphasised the model role of the Roman publishers, this thesis nuances the picture with the hypothesis of mutual exchange between Lafreri and Cock, indicating the correlation among prints produced for the common European market.

Anderson, Patricia J. "The printed image and the transformation of popular culture, 1790-1860." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29002.

Full text
Abstract:
Scholarly consensus dates the onset of mass culture in England to the latter part of the nineteenth century. This study looks at cultural change from 1790 to 1860 and argues that the fundamental characteristics of a modern mass culture were already in place by about 1840. New printing technology, the growth of popular publishing, and the attendant broad dissemination of the printed word and image were central to the early initial emergence of a mass culture. And because the printed image became generally accessible and affordable, people did not necessarily need the ability to read in order to benefit from the offerings of a growing publishing industry. Thus, in a time when literacy was not universal, the printed image was the single most widely shared form of cultural experience. A new, markedly pictorial, mass culture emerged from the centre of the expanded and transformed version of an older popular culture of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The major artifacts of the emergent culture were four illustrated magazines, all of which achieved and maintained unprecedentedly high circulations, and whose written and pictorial content attracted a large and diverse--that is, mass--audience of middle- and working-class people, men and women, from various age groups, and from urban and rural locales all over Great Britain. In considering the content of these magazines and related contemporary artifacts, their place in working-class life, and certain individual producers and consumers of culture, Gramsci's theory of hegemony proves useful and, further, raises questions about the explanatory adequacy of certain other important models of the interaction of class and culture. Additionally the attempt is made to provide, and consistently work from, historically accurate, rigourous, yet widely applicable, definitions of the complex terms, "popular" and "mass". The leitmotif throughout is the relationship of common experience and high culture. A transformed popular culture and the new mass culture at its centre enriched people's lives in many ways. But high culture guarded its exclusivism and, for the most part, remained the preserve of wealth, social privilege and power.

Keskinarkaus, A. (Anja). "Digital watermarking techniques for printed images." Doctoral thesis, Oulun yliopisto, 2013. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9789526200583.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract During the last few decades, digital watermarking techniques have gained a lot of interest. Such techniques enable hiding imperceptible information to images; information which can be extracted later from those images. As a result, digital watermarking techniques have many interesting applications for example in Internet distribution. Contents such as images are today manipulated mainly in digital form; thus, traditionally, the focus of watermarking research has been the digital domain. However, a vast amount of images will still appear in some physical format such as in books, posters or labels, and there are a number of possible applications of hidden information also in image printouts. In this case, an additional level of challenge is introduced, as the watermarking technique should be robust to extraction from printed output. In this thesis, methods are developed, where a watermarked image appears in a printout and the invisible information can be later extracted using a scanner or mobile phone camera and watermark extraction software. In these cases, the watermarking method has to be carefully designed because both the printing and capturing process cause distortions that make watermark extraction challenging. The focus of the study is on developing blind, multibit watermarking techniques, where the robustness of the algorithms is tested in an office environment, using standard office equipment. The possible effect of the background of the printed images, as well as compound attacks, are both paid particular attention to, since these are considered important in practical applications. The main objective is thus to provide technical means to achieve high robustness and to develop watermarking methods robust to printing and scanning process. A secondary objective is to develop methods where the extraction is possible with the aid of a mobile phone camera. The main contributions of the thesis are: (1) Methods to increase watermark extraction robustness with perceptual weighting; (2) Methods to robustly synchronize the extraction of a multibit message from a printout; (3) A method to encode a multibit message, utilizing directed periodic patterns and a method to decode the message after attacks; (4) A demonstrator of an interactive poster application and a key based robust and secure identification method from a printout
Tiivistelmä Digitaalinen vesileimaus on parin viime vuosikymmenen aikana runsaasti huomiota saanut tekniikka, jonka avulla kuviin voidaan piilottaa aistein havaitsematonta tietoa. Vesileimausta ajatellen painatus tuo kumminkin omat erityishaasteensa vesileimaustekniikoille. Väitöstyössä kehitetyt menetelmät on testattu toimistoympäristössä standardi toimistolaitteita käyttäen. Toinen tavoite on tiedon kestävyys luettaessa tietoa matkapuhelimen kameran avulla. Väitöskirjassa tarkastellaan ja kehitellään ratkaisuja neljälle eri osa-alueelle: (1) Ihmisaisteja mallintavien menetelmien käyttö vesileimauksen kestävyyden lisäämiseksi; (2) Robusti synkronointi luettaessa monibittistä tietoa painotuotteesta; (3) Suunnattuja jaksollisia kuvioita käyttävä menetelmä, joka mahdollistaa monibittisen tiedon koodaamisen ja dekoodaamisen hyökkäysten jälkeen; (4) Sovellustasolla tarkastellaan kahta pääsovellusta: interaktiivinen juliste sekä kestävä ja turvattu avaimen avulla tapahtuva painotuotteen identifiointi

Carter, Nicholas Paul. "Automatic recognition of printed music in the context of electronic publishing." Thesis, University of Surrey, 1989. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/843542/.

Full text
Abstract:
Computers are used to manipulate music in various forms, for example digital sound recordings, digitized images of printed scores and music representational language (M.R.L.) encodings. This work is concerned with producing M.R.L. data automatically from existing printed music scores. A review of work undertaken in the field of manipulating printed music by computer is provided. This shows that software which permits production of high-quality scores is commercially available, but the necessary data has to be entered using some form of keyboard, possibly in conjunction with a pointing device. It is desirable, for reasons detailed in this work, to be able to convert the musical information contained in the enormous quantity of existing music into computer-readable form. The only practical method for achieving this is via an automatic system. Such an automatic system must cope with the variations in format, content and print-quality of existing scores. Background material relating to previous work on pattern recognition of various types of binary image is included, with a section covering the subject of automatic recognition of printed music. An original system for automatic recognition of printed music developed by the author is described. This is designed to be widely applicable and hence is, in effect, omnifont and size-independent, with significant tolerance of noise, limited rotation, broken print and distortion. Numerous illustrations showing the application of the system are included, together with proposals for future areas of development.

Love, Johanna. "Dust : exploring the relationship between contemporary modes of viewing the printed photographic image." Thesis, University of the Arts London, 2012. http://ualresearchonline.arts.ac.uk/5887/.

Full text
Abstract:
This practice-based research project was initiated through and informed by my own fine art practice, and examines how dust may be used as a visual element within contemporary image making to generate new modes of viewing and making. The practical work brings together the digital photographic print (as a landscape image) and images of dust to question how digital photographic surface and drawings of dust may sit together within the same pictorial surface to open up new possibilities of reading space and bringing about new apprehensions of temporality and mortality. Theoretical and philosophical context is considered through two contrasting notions of pictorial orientation, the vertical (Alberti, 1435), and the horizontal plane (Steinberg, 1972)and of the interruptive, physical and metaphorical reading of dust within the reading of the photographic printed image. An assertion of the importance of tactile touch and proximity during image creation is made, referencing the thinking of Aristotle, Heidegger, and Merleau-Ponty. Through an analysis of a number of key artists’ works, including Helen Chadwick’s The Oval Court, Carcass (1986); Man Ray and Duchamp’s Dust Breeding (1920); and Hiroshi Sugimoto’s Seascapes – along with a series of practical investigations using a digital flat bed scanner, the research explores how shifts in making and viewing occur as a consequence of changes in image orientation and materiality, and offer the potential of disruption or interruption in the viewer’s perception of photographic space. The experiments and analysis underpin the central argument of the research and demonstrate how materiality and orientation of making are key aspects of image creation, aspects which can be manipulated to create contradictory visual readings of surface and space. The tension brought about by this visual contradiction opens up new possibilities in the perceptions and meanings within the photographic print, tension further underlined by the significant symbolic and indexical presence of dust within the image.

Pramila, A. (Anu). "Reading watermarks with a camera phone from printed images." Doctoral thesis, Oulun yliopisto, 2018. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9789526218052.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract There are many reasons for sharing a photo of a printout. The intention might be to copy the image for personal use or experience an interesting ad with friends. With watermarking, the images can also carry side information and with specialized watermarking methods the information can be read with a mobile device camera. In digital image watermarking, information is hidden on an image in such a way that a computer can read the hidden information but a human cannot discern it. The aim of this thesis is to research the process in which the watermarked image is printed and then read with a digital camera or a camera phone from the printed image. In order to survive the process, the watermark must survive multiple attacks. Some of the attacks occur during printing as the image is halftoned, others when the image is recaptured with a camera, in which case the camera might be rotated around multiple axis. These attacks may cause a loss of synchronization of the watermark and make the extraction impossible. The main objective of the thesis is thus to develop methods that are robust to the printing and capturing process, especially for the situations when the capturing angle is large. This problem contains the circumstances in which the synchronization is lost and the camera lens is not focused properly. In this work, research on digital image watermarking, computational photography and mobile phones are combined. The contributions of this thesis lie in two main parts: First, two print-cam robust methods are proposed, one based on a frame and the other on autocorrelation for synchronization. These two are then used as a basis for an algorithm that recovers the watermark even after camera rotation and image blurring caused by the narrow depth of focus of the lens. The algorithm is later refined and implemented for a mobile phone. The results show that the method is highly robust to capturing the watermark without errors in angles up to 60° with processing times acceptable for real-life applications
Tiivistelmä On olemassa useita syitä tulosteesta otetun valokuvan jakamiseen. Selviytyäkseen tästä prosessista, vesileiman on kestettävä useita hyökkäyksiä.

Abstract:
Objectives: The aim of the current study is to establish the reliability of linear cephalometric measurements made on mandibles and their respective 3D printed models created from different voxel resolutions from a cone beam CT machine. Materials and methods: Ten dry mandibles obtained from the Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine at The University of Iowa College Of Dentistry were used for this study. All mandibles were scanned on the i-CAT FLX cone beam CT machine (Imaging Sciences International, LLC, Pennsylvania, USA) using voxel resolutions of .30mm, .25mm and .20 mm in a 16cm x 8cm field of view using 360° rotation. The 3D models were reconstructed and saved as .STL files using 3D Slicer software and send to a 3D printer for printing. Two observers measured the 10 mandibles and 30 3D printed models. The measurement were repeated on 50% of the samples after at least one week interval. Cronbach’s alpha and intraclass correlation coefficient were calculated to measure reliability. Results: Good to excellent interobserver and intraobserver reliability was achieved across most of the measurements. There was no difference in reliability across models made from different voxel sizes. Conclusion: The current study successfully showed that the reliability of measurements made on 3D printed models of dry skull mandibles created using fused deposition modeling technique using images of different voxel sizes from an i-CAT FLX CBCT machine are valid, reproducible, and reliable and can be used for diagnostic and clinical purposes.

Analisaremos...

Abstract:
For the last decades, the informatization of newspaper publishing, as well as the development of desk top publishing software, have made it possible to consolidate the application of infographics as an ancillary tool to news transmission on daily printed periodicals. The publishing practices of infojournalism integrate verbal texts with different non-verbal expressions, such as illustrations, maps, charts, tables, pictures, among others. Departing from the concept of text as a semiotic mechanism generating senses, we have analyzed eight infographic texts in three news coverages taken out from the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo, for the purpose of pointing at structuring formats of infographics, and such modeling implications on the formation of senses. Based on the observation of the corpus, we have identified how infojournalism incorporates and adapts external resources into journalism, and have distinguished possible signifying flows in the dialogue that an infographic text establishes with the other texts on a newspaper page. These elements have allowed us to establish the relations of the basic roles that infographics may play in a printed newspaper.

Abstract:
Within the home environment there exits a host of digital color imaging (DCI) system configurations. The combination of devices and software at the consumerâ s desktop with devices and services at a remote location (e.g., Print at Kodak), creates a complex interaction of device, contextual, and observer characteristics. In particular, the cathode-ray tube (CRT) display has the potential to influence consumersâ perceptions of image quality and their subsequent image manipulation activities. Depending on the inherent color bias and apparent contrast of the CRT, extensive image manipulation may occur, significantly altering the digital values of the image. Output generated by a remote printer will reflect any image manipulation undertaken by the consumer. If manipulation was extensive, what the consumer receives from a remote printer will appear quite different from the softcopy version and thus, may be deemed unacceptable. This research was designed to address the softcopy-hardcopy matching issues that arise from the home DCI system configuration just described. The primary study examined how the CRT display influenced perceived color quality of photographs generated at two points in a DCI system; on-screen photographs (softcopy) and photographic quality prints (hardcopy). CRT gamma, color temperature, and excitation purity were manipulated using an orthogonal, blocked, central composite design. Twenty-two Eastman Kodak Company employees viewed 6 photographs under each of the 15 CRT conditions. Participants rated the color quality of each softcopy photograph, then were given an opportunity to edit color balance, brightness, and contrast for each photograph. The edited photos were printed and rated once again for color quality and acceptability. Results indicated that monitor calibration influenced perceived softcopy color quality, softcopy editing behavior, and subsequent perceived hardcopy color quality. Perception of softcopy color quality ratings was determined predominantly by the CRT gamma level. Participants responded to CRT color balance differences through their editing behavior. In some cases, edits were large enough to significantly and negatively impact perceived hardcopy color quality. Gamma in particular, was the most significant predictor of hardcopy color quality ratings and rejection rates. Additional differences were observed between first- and third-party photographs. Results from this research may be applied to the development of monitor calibration tools, scene balancing algorithms, and software, for the purpose of accommodating consumer image manipulation behavior, in the context of the home DCI system presented herein.

Abstract: Subjectivity, chronics, illustration, printed journalism and production of meaning. What do these terms have in common? More than presenting a personal opinion, chronics and illustrations, offspring of a cultural industry that arrives in Brazil in the beginning of the 20th century, influence other social vision, once they are characterized by a restless search to capture a moment of reality and interpret it through text or illustration. The means of communication attracts the reader's attention through different ways of informing or commenting a piece of news. During the evolution of printed journalism, columns of information were adapted to the newspaper and the use of illustration started being a resource used in the construction of a new production of meaning over the reality. As subjective as the chronics, editorials and comments, the illustration is used nowadays in a daily basis in the printed media, due to the evolution enabled by the new technologies and also by the good acceptance which received along to the readers which more and more consumes images. From this perspective, there is the undeniable importance of studying the relationship between text and image to understand the implication of the verbal and non-verbal through the new propositions of communication. In the present dissertation, we are going to check the production of meaning among determined chronics by Arnaldo Jabor and the illustrations of Cido Gonçalves published in Caderno 2 of the O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper between 2006 and 2007. We will analyze them as manifestations of a consolidated and strong cultural industry. Checking the relationship between text and image is the main objective proposed, reflecting over the importance of chronics and illustration in the printed media. We intend to analyze the selected chronics noticing how they overcome the ephemerity of the news using other referentials to site ...(Complete abstract click electronic address below)

Abstract:
This thesis examines the transmission and reception of images in Le Roman de la rose manuscripts and printed editions of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Through in-depth case studies, I analyse how illustrators, editors, and readers used printed imagery in Rose books ca. 1481-1538, during the period of Rose printed edition production, exploring wider cross-disciplinary issues concerning the history of the book, the relationship between word and image, and readership practices following the advent of French printing. I argue that the mobility of printed imagery, which was facilitated in part by the wider dissemination of woodcuts in workshops, influenced the form and function of images in books. In addition, I problematize the 'transition' from manuscript to print in the later Middle Ages, through an investigation of artisans' personal and professional collaborations and evidence of image sharing between hand-illustrated and printed books. Bookmakers and readers used printed imagery in fascinating ways in books, appropriating and modifying woodcuts in order to engage with certain subjects and motifs. Readers' visual responses to books are under-examined, and I assess how readers' drawings add insight into their understanding of printed editions and those editions' visual iconography. French books contain a large body of evidence pertaining to image production and reception, but printed imagery is often overlooked, despite its potential to shed light on the practices of illustrators, editors, and readers. I provide new strategies for examining patterns of printed image production, circulation, and reception in the visual presentations of manuscripts and printed editions of this period. I also deepen understanding of the Rose and its consumption in the later Middle Ages and Renaissance, probing the role of images in books.

This work proposes method to encode and decode imas using conformal mapping. Conformal mapping modifies domains without modifyung physical characteristics between them. Real images are processed between these domains using encoding keys, also called transforming functions. The advantage of this methodology is the ability to carry the message as an encoded image in printed media for posterior-decoding.

This thesis describes the development of colorimetric sensors in polymeric materials for the biomarkers detection for clinical diagnostics. The devices were manufactured with 96 microzones from the direct printing technology, using transparency film. The printed microplates were used to detect dengue, glucose and total proteins. Dengue detection in patient serum samples was performed with the capture and indirect ELISA assay for the detection of immunoglobulin M and immunoglobulin G, respectively. After the acquisition of the images with a cellular camera, a color histogram analysis and the principal component analysis (PCA) were performed. The results of these analyzes allowed to easily differentiate the groups of serum samples from patients who were infected and non-infected with the dengue virus. In order to promote carboxyl groups on the surface of the polyester film, this was modified by two methodologies: alkaline hydrolysis and adsorption of a polymer. The glucose assay was performed on the films modified by both methodologies and detected by a cellular camera, and the detection limits found were 0.70 mM and 0.93 mM for the polymer and hydrolyzed film, respectively. In addition, the biuret assay was performed on the microplates for the analysis of total proteins in canine serum samples using a bench scanner as the detection system. The limit of detection was 9.7 μM for the analytical curve ranging from 0 to 200 μM albumin.

The front page of the press is, by social delegation, the face of the world that lends images to the minds and society. Dynamics of newsmaking and aesthetization reach the highest level in this page since it is here that the newspaper screams more and condenses the top of its informative pyramid. As a general goal, we proposem to identify and understand the image of the front page of the Portuguese press, particularly of Correio da Manhã e Diário de Notícias, in the twenty-‐first century, in its dimensions of image of the world, visual image (textual, iconic and plastic) and mental one. We analyse contente and form in a holistic intention of understanding. Within the framework of Semiology and communicator’s studies, we support our investigation in a mixed methodology, for, among other purposes, to make the corpus talk, to identify values (semiological, news and social ones), to realize the logics of decision of professionals that create media images. We´build and test a model on the media attention to contente and form. Among the findings, we note that depending on the theme (content), there is variation in the impact of the variables considered, the attention to form increases with customization of the event, the practice of "good news is,,good news".

Abstract:
Abstract This study is about what happens to text and image content in a printed teaching material when adapted to a digital format. The purpose of my work is to find out if readability is changing in the new medium.  The theoretical focus of the study is readability, text and image in collaboration, as well as multimodality. To find out if the digital format affects readability, i have performed two text analyzes, a readability analysis of the printed material and a comparative analysis of the digital material. I have also conducted interviews with teachers and experts about the teaching methods. A test and a participant observation were conducted with the target group where my improvement proposal was compared with the existing material.  The conclusions i have come to is that there must be clear links between text and image in a digital teaching material. Color markings in body text with word explanations can interfere with the reading rhythm and too many heading levels can confuse the reader. The most important conclusion is, however, that how readable a text is depends on the audience's previous knowledge, objectives and motivation for the subject. A hard-worded factual text does necessarily need to be easier by splitting the text into short paragraphs, but it can however, make it more difficult to understand the content.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the culture of printed images during the Elizabethan period, particularly those images of a religious nature. Focusing on images which depict invisible beings (i.e. angels, God, demons etc.), the thesis addresses the assumption that Protestant England all but completely eradicated religious visual imagery from society. Examining images that were first created and printed in Elizabethan England as well as older images which had been recycled from earlier texts and others imported from Europe, the research offers an analysis of Protestant printed imagery between 1558 and 1603. Questions of how images were read, altered, augmented, copied and transmitted across time and space have been posed. What was depicted and how? How were religious images used? What was their understood role in early modern print culture? How did Protestants distinguish between church images to be destroyed and printed images to be read? In this, the images have been historically contextualised within both the theological and cultural milieu of Calvinist theology, the growing international marketplace of print and early modern English society. Attention has been paid to how images were received by readers and how they may have been seen. Emphasis is placed upon the role of the printed image as both a representation and an agent of culture, as well as an integral aspect of the printing industry. Ultimately, this thesis seeks to explain how printed images were employed and utilised by both printer and reader in the context of an iconoclastic English Reformation.

Thermography is an imaging method that allows temperature visualization of various regions of an object. In medicine, it finds applications related to oncology, burn trauma, vascular, respiratory and skin diseases, and as a general tissue vitality checking tool. 3D thermography adds tridimensional information to the conventional 2D thermography. It is made from a 3D mesh wrapped by thermal texture, enabling a more precise visualization of thermal patterns of anatomical structures. We propose a system capable of combining 2D thermal images with their corresponding 3D mesh, delivering a 3D thermogram for medical applications as a result. We used Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) for mesh alignment and Structure from Motion (SfM) for 3D reconstruction in the present method. In contrast to most research found in the literature, the 3D mesh and the thermal images do not need to be acquired simultaneously, and a mechanical support for the thermal camera and the 3D scanner is not required. The 3D mesh may be acquired, for instance, from a 3D scanner or a magnetic resonance imaging machine. In order to evaluate the results, a phantom, that is, a static assessment object of known properties has been built. For this purpose, a novel technique using printed circuit boards has been developed. As a result, comparison between the output of the method and the phantom shows a maximum error of 3.73 mm and a mean error of 1.41 mm with 0.74 mm of standard deviation in phantom of 100 x 150 x 103.2 mm.

Gourrame, Khadija.

Full text
Abstract:
Digital image watermarking consists in embedding information within the image which cannot be seen by the human visual system, but recovered with a software. The aim of this thesis is to propose a watermarking method when the watermarked image is printed on a physical support and then read freehandedly with a smartphone camera. In order to survive to the print-cam process, the watermark must resist to multiple attacks. Those attacks occur during printing and capturing the image with a camera: in that case the captured image might be rotated around the optical axis of the camera producing 3D geometric deformation and translations and scaling may also occur. Pixel value distortions are also present. These attacks may cause the loss of synchronization of the watermark and make the detection impossible. Hence, the main objective of the thesis is to develop a watermarking method that is robust to the print-cam attack in the context of an industrial security application for ID images. Fourier transform is used as this watermarking domain has invariance properties against some geometric distortions. Three main correction methods were integrated to deal with print-cam attacks: frame-based perspective rectification of the freehandedly captured images using detection of Hough lines, a Wiener filter to decrease image blurring and reduce noise, and adjustments to reduce color degradations. Results show that the method is highly robust with a total error rate of 1%, compared to a least 25% of errors for other methods. the obtained error rate (1%) is being compatible with the targeted industrial application

Abstract:
It is the production of metal engravings, etched on copper, with the procedures of etching, aquatint, burin and drypoint, printed in diverse papers. All prints were produced from the observation of reality captured in places visited, in the attempt to apprehend them in different levels. Registered by delineated annotations or recorded directly in the varnished matrix, were subsequently reinvented in the studio, with attention to the quality of language and the specificities of the means of production of metal engraving.

Abstract:

Coated solid bleached board belongs to the top-segment of paperboards. One important property of paperboard is the printability. In this diploma work a specific print defect, oriented mottle, has been studied in association with Iggesund Paperboard. The objectives of the work were to develop a method for analysis of the dark and light areas of oriented mottle, to analyse these areas, and to clarify the effect from the print, coating and paperboard surface related factors. This would clarify the origin of oriented mottle and predict oriented mottle on unprinted paperboard. The objectives were fulfilled by analysing the areas between the dark halftone dots, the amount of coating and the ink penetration, the micro roughness and the topography. The analysis of the areas between the dark halftone dots was performed on several samples and the results were compared regarding different properties. The other methods were only applied on a limited selection of samples. The results from the study showed that the intensity differences between the dark halftone dots were enhanced in the dark areas, the coating amount was lower in the dark areas and the ink did not penetrate into the paperboard. The other results showed that areas with high transmission corresponded to dark areas, smoother micro roughness, lower coating amount and high topography. A combination of the information from these properties might be used to predict oriented mottle. The oriented mottle is probably an optical phenomenon in half tone prints, and originates from variations in the coating and other paperboard properties.

Abstract:
Recent advances in imaging technology have resulted in a proliferation of images across different media. Before it reaches the end user, these signals undergo several transformations, which may introduce defects/artifacts that affect the perceived image quality. In order to design and evaluate these imaging systems, perceived image quality must be measured. This work focuses on analysis of print image defects and characterization of printer artifacts such as banding and graininess by using a human visual system (HVS) based framework. Specifically the work addresses the prediction of visibility of print defects (banding and graininess) by representing the print defects in terms of the orthogonal wavelet and sinusoidal basis functions and combining the detection probabilities of each basis functions to predict the response of the human visual system (HVS). The detection probabilities for basis function components and the simulated print defects are obtained from separate subjective tests. The prediction performance from both the wavelet based and sine based approaches is compared with the subjective testing results .The wavelet based prediction performs better than the sinusoidal based approach and can be a useful technique in developing measures and methods for print quality evaluations based on HVS.

Abstract:

What is meant with print quality, what makes people perceive the quality of an image in a certain way? An inquiry was made about what the parameters are that strongly affect the perception of digital printed images.

A subjective test and some measurements make the basis for the thesis. The goal was to find a tool to predict perceived image quality when investigating the connections between the subjective test and the measurements.

Some suitable images were chosen, with a variety of motifs. A test panel consisting of people that are used to observe image quality answered questions about the perception of the quality. Measurements were made on a special test form to get information about the six different printers used in the investigation.

One of the discoveries was made when two images with the same colorful motif were compared. The first image got a much higher grade for general quality than the second image, even though the second image was printed with a printer that had a larger color gamut. The reason of this is that the first image consists of more saturated colors, and the second image has more details. The human eye perceives the more saturated image to be better than the image with more details. Another discovery was the correlation between the perceived general quality of a colored image and the perceived color gamut. One conclusion was that a great difference between two calculated color gamuts resulted in a large difference in perception of the color gamuts. A discovery of an image with very few colors and many glossy surfaces was that print mottle and sharpness are strictly connected to the general quality.

Abstract:
The initial idea was to study how a literary image was materialized in print and on film. Karen Blixen who can be classified as an author of tales treats time and space in order to appeal to the reader's mental participation so that his imagination is ignited and he witnesses a unique experience referring to a common memory. The printed image - despite a limited presentation through a single image - can function in the same way. The reader reacts upon the codes proposed by the cover by completing it in his mind and going beyond. Except when the economic interest is more important than the aesthetic research. The images which make out the film can be guided very closely by the writtent details. However, time and space are different mainly because the image is realised and therefore determined. The scriptwriter's subjective production bring the spectator into a state of fascination. He does not have to complete images since they are completed at the end of the film. In any case, there is an impossibility to render the written language by the two other techniques

Mohan, Karuniya. "Ensemble Modelling of in situ Feature Variables for Printed Electronics Manufacturing with in situ Process Control Potential." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/84947.

Abstract:
Aerosol Jet® Printing (AJP) is a direct-write based additive manufacturing process that is capable of printing electronics with fine features and various materials. It eliminates the complex masking process in traditional semiconductor manufacturing, thus enables flexible electronics design and reduces manufacturing cost. However, the quality control of AJP processes is still a challenging problem, primarily due to the lack of understanding of the potential root causes of the quality issues. There is a complex interaction among process setting variables, in situ feature variables, and quality variables in AJP processes. In this research, an ensemble model strategy is proposed to quantify the effect of the process setting variables on the in situ feature variables, and the effect of the in situ feature variables on quality variables in a two-level hierarchical way. By identifying significant in situ feature variables as responses for the process setting variables, as well as predictors for product quality in a joint estimation problem, the proposed models have a hierarchical variable relationship to enable in situ process control for variation reduction and defect mitigation. A real case study is investigated to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method.

Garrouri, Sihem. "We princes are set on highest stage : performing and representing Elizabeth i's royal image." Caen, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016CAEN1030.

Abstract:
In this project, I analysed the representation and performance of Queen Elizabeth I's royal image. I examined how she utilized two significant devices: representation and performance in order to validate her dynastic inheritance, overcome gender restraints, sustain her power, and craft an idealized public persona. That is, her exercise of power was closely connected with her staging of monarchy and creation of images. In this way, dramatization and image-making, as mechanisms of governance, would characterize her entire reign. This would, definitely, espouse her mythology which is still explored today. The issue in question is the intersection between performance, representation, gender, and power. An exploration of these issues, which I found compelling, is thus a useful contribution to the study of Elizabeth's image. I argued that Elizabeth's use of performance and images during her reign were the mediums to negotiate gender and identity, as well as to consolidate her power. After her death, her image was reshaped and dramatized in an attempt to render her immortal, identify her identity, and respond to contemporary historical events. By retelling the history of the Queen, novel creations and inspirations have emerged and sometimes conflicting depictions are observed. Thus, it seems that she would not leave the stage
