Abstract:
Coins are important evidence which cannot be easily challenged because it bears the date of minting, as well as the minted place (for silver). The coins in Iraq, at the beginning of Islam, included some names of princes; and the Umayyad coins did not include names of any successor or prince, as well as the Abbasid coins were the same as the Umayyad coins; but it changed at the time of the second Abbasid Caliph (al-Mansur) 136-158 AH. As well, the silver dirham included the name of the Prince of Caliph al-Mansur, therefore the words (the Mahdi Mohammed, Commander of the Faithful) appeared, especially on Mohammedia dirham in Iran since the Year 145/762. Abstract:
Bay Salam is a type of forward contract between two parties to sell or buy a commodity set at agreed terms and conditions on a future date. The Bay Salam contract is beneficial for both buyer and seller because the seller receives full payment in advance while the buyer pays at a favourable price. Despite its benefits to farmers and vendors, this mode of financing is widely available. Therefore, this article aims to explore the concept of the Bay Salam contract and its potential application in financing the agricultural sector in contemporary banking system. This research adopts a qualitative approach by critically reviewing the literature and conducting semi-structured interviews with seven financial and agricultural experts in Nigeria using purposive sampling method. Findings show that Bay Salam is largely unpopular in modern days due to high level of risk and management responsibilities required for the financier. The novelty of this paper lies in the proposed model which combines the concept of Bay Salam and Takaful.

Full text
Abstract:
By recounting origins of thinking on the principles of Islamic jurisprudence (uṣūl al-fiqh) in Ḥanbalism, this thesis aims at analyzing successive steps which led iconic authors between the eleventh and the fourteenth century – such as al-Farrā’, Ibn ‛Aqīl, Ibn Qudāma, Ibn Taymiyya, Ibn al-Qayyim al-Ǧawziyya and al-Ṭūfī – to place the principle of general interest within their theory and demonstrate their intellectual depth. This work reveals the tension among the ḥanbali texts between, on the one hand, religious law and rules of worship, and, on the other hand, social, economic and political transactions. This leads us to reconsider negative preconceptions about this school, often categorized as rigorist and at the roots of which emerged current ultra-orthodox groups such as Salafists. We then propose to explain how controversies with rival doctrines enabled new original ideas on legal norms to arise. It paved the way for some forms of secularization concerning foundations of social or political rules. Our analyses also suggest that jurists attempts to reconciliate reality requirements with the contingency of a moral ideal. This latter ensues directly from their theological viewpoint which attribute a determining role to general interest and justice

Abstract:
This chapter examines the development of Madie Hall through the lens of her father and mother as they became key players in the growth of the new south industrial city of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It explores the successes of educated southern Black professionals like her father and mother and the ways they leveraged their social and economic power with white oligarchs to upbuild Black Winston-Salem. The price for their success was an acceptance of racial segregation, the denial of political rights, a race riot, and an inability to institutionalize a cohesive health-care system for African Americans. The tricky terrain under which Black professionals operated exposes the ways in which white supremacy both offered opportunity and constrained Hall’s life and determined her future.

Like all Ayyubid princes, Sultan Salih rose to power by fighting his family members, aided by his large army of Turkic slaves, called mamluks. After a period of captivity in which his Turkic concubine Shajar al-Durr bore him a son, he gained freedom and became sultan of Egypt. Just as large numbers of male slaves were imported into Egypt to serve as soldiers and servants, female slaves were acquired from the same areas, possibly in even greater numbers. These served as servants and concubines. Some, such as Shajar al-Durr, became mothers of their master’s sons and thus gained more security and social importance.

Abstract:
When Sultan Salih died while overseeing the battle against the Franks of the Seventh Crusade, Egypt suddenly became vulnerable to attack by the Franks and the Ayyubid princes ruling neighboring territories. Hence, his death became a secret guarded closely by his most trusted advisors and Shajar al-Durr until his sole surviving son could be brought to Cairo. When that heir proved a failure and was assassinated, Shajar al-Durr became sultan in a highly unusual move that surprised even the commenters of the period. She minted coins with her titles, and the weekly sermon in the mosques was recited in her name as Egypt’s sultan.

Abstract:
Finance infiltrated fiction, just as fiction enabled readers of the early 1870s Arabic press to apprehend the dangerous and deceptive fictitiousness underwriting a financialized society. With the rise of a credit economy in Beirut, transactions textualized in the form of ledgers, receipts, checks, promissory notes, and mortgages were securing the economy, but the very immateriality of these exchanges introduced a new kind of risk and uncertainty. Fiction loomed within finance and threatened dreams of progress; speculating in Arabic became the province of novelists and financiers alike. Merchants and brokers became stock protagonists of novels by Salīm al-Bustānī and Yūsuf al- Shalfūn. Enabled by the telegraph, a new kind of speed emerged: merchants and traders relied on the press for the latest shipping news and commodity prices; a single year’s silk harvests could make or break fortunes; and imported fashions changed so fast, as one printed anecdote had it, that a wife’s hat could go out of style before her husband even made it home from the shop. Ultimately, a sense of anxiety pervaded a Beirut reading public increasingly worried about the costs of keeping pace with the flows and imbalances of a global order of finance capital.
