Abstract:
In this paper, we set up an abstract theory of Murata densities, well tailored to general arithmetical semigroups. In [On certain densities of sets of primes, Proc. Japan Acad. Ser. A Math. Sci.56(7) (1980) 351–353; On some fundamental relations among certain asymptotic densities, Math. Rep. Toyama Univ.4(2) (1981) 47–61], Murata classified certain prime density functions in the case of the arithmetical semigroup of natural numbers. Here, it is shown that the same density functions will obey a very similar classification in any arithmetical semigroup whose sequence of norms satisfies certain general growth conditions. In particular, this classification holds for the set of monic polynomials in one indeterminate over a finite field, or for the set of ideals of the ring of S-integers of a global function field (S finite).

Abstract:
The population biology of white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) inhabiting a 1.4-ha naturally occurring dispersal sink was studied for 5 years in west-central Indiana and compared with that in surrounding old-growth habitat. Densities in the dispersal sink were consistently lower than in prime habitat. Autumn and winter survival were practically nil. The sink was recolonized by adults in the spring following extreme low winter densities or extinction. Summer reproductive rates and the pattern of territoriality were similar to those in prime habitat. Mice colonized elsewhere when empty prime habitat was made experimentally available. The data suggest that few dispersing mice can be accommodated by the dispersal sink.

Abstract:
A general density theory of the set of prime divisors of linear recurring sequences with constant coefficients of any order is built up from the work of Lucas, Laxton, Hasse, and Lagarias. In particular, in this theory the notion of the rank of a prime divisor of a second order recurring sequence (Lucas), the group associated with a given recursion (Laxton), and the effective computation of densities (Hasse and Lagarias) are generalized and combined.

Abstract:
This dissertation studies a couple of variance-dependent instruments in the financial market. Firstly, a number of aspects of the variance swap in connection to the Barndorff-Nielsen and Shephard model are studied. A partial integro-differential equation that describes the dynamics of the arbitrage-free price of the variance swap is formulated. Under appropriate assumptions for the first four cumulants of the driving subordinator, a Ve\v{c}e\v{r}-type theorem is proved. The bounds of the arbitrage-free variance swap price are also found. Finally, a price-weighted index modulated by market variance is introduced. The large-basket limit dynamics of the price index and the ``error term" are derived. Empirical data driven numerical examples are provided in support of the proposed price index. We implemented Feynman path integral method for the analysis of option pricing for certain L\'evy process-driven financial markets. For such markets, we find closed form solutions of transition probability density functions of option pricing in terms of various special functions. Asymptotic analysis of transition probability density functions is provided. We also find expressions for transition probability density functions in terms of various special functions for certain L\'evy process-driven markets where the interest rate is stochastic.

Abstract:
Adiposity is a known risk factor for breast cancer and weight gain during adulthood also seems to play a role. In the breast, adipose tissue can be studied through breast density features. Indeed, absolute non-dense area reflects breast fat and percent density, one of the strongest risk factor for breast cancer, reflects the proportion of fibroglandular tissue. The first objective of this dissertation was to evaluate the association between weight gain during adulthood and three density features: percent density, absolute dense and non-dense areas, among 1435 women recruited at screening mammography. The second objective was to present a consolidated text of the interrelation between adiposity, breast density and breast cancer risk and to discuss it in an epidemiological and biological point of view.

Abstract:
The prevalence of childhood obesity has significantly increased over the past decades. This increased have adverse effects on cardiovascular health, leading to early development of atherosclerosis. Obesity is associated with a reduced HDL cholesterol level and with a decreased efflux capacity of HDL particles. Recently, it has been shown that efflux capacity of HDL particles is inversely associated with the risk of coronary heart disease. However, only few studies have addressed this issue in obese adolescents. The main objective of this study was to assess the impact of a multidisciplinary intervention program on HDL cholesterol efflux capacity (CEC) in obese adolescents. Twenty-nine adolescents (16 boys and 13 girls) aged 11 to 16 years were involved in this study. The goal of the intervention was to improve eating habits and increase the level of physical activity. Each youth was followed by a multidisciplinary team and trained three sessions per week for 16 weeks. Results suggest that a multidisciplinary intervention program can help to improve risk profile and HDL CEC in obese adolescents. In addition, results indicate that changes in HDL CEC are related to changes in HDL cholesterol concentrations

Abstract:
The Ornstein-Zernike integral equations are used to study the structure and the thermodynamics of colloidal suspensions modelled as a highly asymmetric solute-solvent mixture. We propose a new closure to remedy the non-convergence problem of the RHNC closure. After having tested it on the radial distribution functions, we determine the fluid-fluid coexistence line of asymmetric binary hard spheres with diameter ration R=10. We thus confirm from the phase diagram the validity of the effective one-component approach. Then, we examine these sytems in inhomogeneous phase (colloids near a wall or in a slit pore) and include attractions between the various components. The RHNC closure is tested then at the level of the structure and the potential of mean force. The method is finally used to study solvation effects of confined colloids

Abstract:
The goal of this research was to determine which population factors were associated with iPad pricing differences across countries. Specifically, this paper measured the relationship between iPad prices in a given country and its U.S. dollar exchange rate, amount of income inequality, Gross Domestic Product per capita, luxury good sales growth, Individualism Index score, and population density. Panel data was collected for the iPad 2, the iPad Retina, and the iPad Mini tablets from 38 countries of varying geographic locations, economic paradigms, and political structures. The pooled data set yielded 114 observations in total. Regressing iPad price as a percent of national average income revealed a positive relationship between price and status consciousness as well as cultural individualism. There existed a negative relationship between iPad price and luxury sales growth. These results indicated that the iPad served as a status symbol with higher demand in countries that promoted individualism and exhibited higher degrees of income inequality.

Abstract:
Electrical rotating machines operate through the interaction of electrical currents with magnetic flux that may itself be created through other electrical currents. In both cases the magnetic flux present in the air gap of the machine is a crucial component of its overall performance dictating, among other things, torque (and hence machine size) and noise and vibration. Both these particular aspects are of prime importance to designers of electrical propulsion motors for naval applications. The prime aspect of the magnetic flux in the air gap is its shape or profile which has a direct bearing on both torque density and torque pulsations. This paper describes a method to analyse a machine winding through application of Fourier Series to determine the efficacy of the winding with regard to machine excitation. The method is first explained by analysing a conventional winding and then applied to a Fractional Slot Winding and a Dual Winding.

Abstract:
Abstract Near-neutral pH stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is a significant threat to the operational safety and reliability of gas and oil pipelines. The SCC cracks are typically formed in colonies with different crack density populations on the external surface of the pipe. The density of SCC cracks affect how pipeline integrity and remaining lifetime are assessed. Although sparse and dense crack colonies are commonly observed on pipelines, it has not been well established how these crack colonies with different crack populations were developed in the field. This research was made in an attempt to replicate near-neutral pH SCC cracks with different crack densities in the laboratory with realistic loading conditions commonly found during field operation. An X65 pipeline steel with different surface preparations was used. The results showed that the dense near-neutral pH SCC cracks were successfully reproduced on the primer-coated samples, whereas sparse cracks were reproduced on the mill-scaled and polished samples. The densely spaced cracks could transform into sparsely spaced cracks when most of the primer layer and mill scale had been removed during the long period of corrosion under cyclic loading and further corrosion occurred thinning the crack density. The results of crack initiation obtained from this investigation have also been found to be quite consistent with crack initiation scenarios found during field operation.

Abstract:
The first-mile, last-mile problem is a significant deterrent for potential transit riders, especially in suburban neighborhoods with low density. Transit agencies have typically sought to solve this problem by adding parking spaces near transit stations and adding stops to connect riders to fixed-route transit. However, these measures are often only short-term solutions. In the last few years, transit agencies have tested whether new mobility services, such as ridehailing, ridesharing, and microtransit, can offer fast, reliable connections to and from transit stations. However, there is limited research that evaluates the potential impacts of these projects. Concurrently, there is growing interest in the future of automated vehicles (AVs) and the potential of AVs to solve this first-mile problem by reducing the cost of providing these new mobility services to promote access to transit. This paper expands upon existing research to model the simulate the travel and revenue impacts of a fleet of automated vehicles that provide transit access services in the San Francisco Bay Area offered over a range of fares. The model simulates a fleet of AVs for first-mile transit access at different price points for three different service models (door-to-door ridehailing and ridesharing and meeting point ridesharing services). These service models include home-based drop-off and pick-up for single passenger service (e.g., Uber and Lyft), home-based drop-off and pick-up for multi-passenger service (e.g., microtransit), and meeting point multi-passenger service (e.g., Via).
