Abstract:
With the frequent changes in education environment caused by dynamic economy, politics, and global trends among others, primary teacher education should keep abreast with these trends. However, in Uganda this has not been the case. While government designs new curriculum for primary schools, the changes in teacher education curriculum seem to be slower. Teacher educators are not familiar with the new trends in education such as ICT in teaching and learning, gender, learner centered education etc. The teaching materials are not easily available in the teacher training colleges because of shortages of funds. The study sought to: analyse the curriculum of Primary Teacher Education (PTE) since 1990, assess the challenges Primary Teacher Colleges (PTC) experience in the preparation of quality teachers and analyse the extent to which PTE curriculum is responding to the new trends in primary education. Using mainly interviews and focus group discussion, this paper explored the relationship between teacher preparation and quality of teachers produced. Findings showed that the curriculum of the teacher training colleges is not tailored to the requirements of the primary curriculum. In addition PTE faces many challenges that affect the preparation of teachers. Key words: primary teacher education, primary school curriculum, quality education.

Abstract:
Teacher development program (TDP) will only be effective when it answers the teacher's need. This study aims to find out how important the training content that has been delivered in the TDP. The training contents listed in this study drawn from the Teacher Working Group, the School of Master Teacher program organized by Sekolah Guru Indonesia Dompet Dhuafa and teacher development at Sukma Bangsa School. A total of 327 primary school teachers have participated in the study which was designed based on survey model. The study was limited to primary school teachers due to different teacher needs of other school levels may be occurred. The data of this study were obtained by using a questionnaire comprised of 13 close-ended items in the form of the rating scale. Descriptive statistics include the percentage, frequency, mean, and standard deviation for data analysis. According to the study results, 84,1% of respondents chosen classroom management as the most important training content to learn. Another indication of the result is that the teachers also need to learn teaching and learning models, developmental psychology, teaching motivation, teaching and learning evaluation, teaching and learning media, technology-based learning, lesson plan, 2013 curriculum, classroom display, public speaking and literacy-based learning that more than 50% teachers defined them as very important to learn. However, only 47% of respondents mentioned Classroom Action Research is very important to learn. Based on the results of this study, the designer of TDP suggested considering classroom management as the first priority to deliver in the TDP followed by teaching and learning models, developmental psychology, teaching motivation, teaching and learning evaluation, teaching and learning media, technology-based learning, lesson plan, 2013 curriculum, classroom display, public speaking and literacy-based learning. In addition, it has to pay more attention to the teacher's need level of Classroom Action Research that is still very low due to improving their motivation to do research.

Abstract:
In Malaysia the training of primary school teachers is solely carried out by teacher training institutes which offer the Bachelor of Teaching with Honors (Primary education) program and was first launched in 2007. This program prepares primary school teachers specializing in various subjects or major and is carried out in 27 teacher training institutes. The main aim of this program is to produce quality primary school teachers in terms of knowledge, skills and professional competencies in their respective subjects and in line with the National Philosophy of Education. After a span of five years, has this Bachelor of Teaching program achieve its learning outcomes outlined? Thus this study intends to evaluate this primary teacher education program by focusing on the achievement of learning outcomes (LO) of this four years program. The sample involved in this study is a group of 106 final year student teachers who have completed their 8th semester of study. A questionnaire was administered to check the extent of the learning outcomes being achieved. This questionnaire was developed based on the eight main learning outcomes of this Bachelor of Teaching program. The question items were written individually by referring to the sub outcomes of each main LO. Thus this studys main objectives are to find out to what extent the overall LO was achieved and also to determine the importance of each LO. The results would serve as guidelines for the teaching staff to further improve their teaching practices and guidance given to students in the future.

Abstract:
This article presents an original and innovative way for primary teacher training concerning teaching the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) using concept maps. Four types of concept maps were designed and built so that the interconnections between the 17 SDGs could be captured and the complexity of their interdependencies could be highlighted. This educational tool was used in 14 workshops with interesting results, which took place in Piraeus (Greece), and was addressed to primary teachers. Concept maps have proven to be a powerful tool for highlighting correlations between the 17 SDGs, as each group of teachers who used them linked the SDGs in a unique manner and simultaneously justified this interconnection. In addition, the use of concept maps was an opportunity for teachers to experience group work and its quality characteristics, such as participation, exchange of opinions, argumentation and different perspectives.

Abstract:
Innovative practices in schools are the outcome of a combination of factors, including the teacher's primary role in directing methodological and technological innovation. In order to make this happen, the teacher – as an expert and educational leader – needs a repertoire of specific skills that allow for critical and situated adoption of tools, processes and learning resources. This paper describes the educational structure and features of some online and blended courses intended for initial and continuous teacher training. These courses are designed to support teachers in acquiring strategic competences for their work. Starting from the experience of the University of Foggia, the authors intend to offer their perspective on the prominence of teacher training within the framework of school innovation.

Abstract:
Over the past few years the processes of education informatization are tied with its digitalisation. The certain upgrades of electronic educational resources take place and the new era of learning tools – digital learning resources – is developing. The preference is given to the open educational resources that can work on any digital device, so they are digital educational resources. The article presents the experience of using the distance course “Digital Technologies for Teaching and Research” for primary school teacher training at State Higher Education Institution “Donbas State Pedagogical University”. The analysis of the practical use of the distance course and studying foreign scientific and methodological data sources proves the necessity of forming and developing the Next Generation of Digital Learning Environment (NGDLE). Five main functional domains of NGDLE are distinguished and analysed which ensure its full implementation: interoperability and integration; personalization; analytics, advising, and learning assessment; collaboration; accessibility and universal design. The model of digital learning environment for primary school teacher training is completely intuitive platform for integrating the virtual training of primary school teachers, conducting conferences and webinars, effective collaboration of scientists, university lecturers, university students and school teachers. The platform clusters are characterized (distance courses, digital teaching and learning resources, internet conferences, webinars, student and teacher e-portfolios, forum) which correlate with mentioned features of the Next Generation of Digital Learning Environment. It is proved that the Next Generation of Digital Learning Environment is developed due to evolving traditional learning management systems (LMS) and their similarity with the principles of open education and flexible personal learning environments.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore whether an in-service life teacher training program can improve boarding students’ health, behavior, and academic performance. Design/methodology/approach – The authors conducted a cluster-randomized controlled trial to measure the effect of life teacher training on student health, behavior, and academic performance among 839 boarding students in ten central primary boarding schools in Shaanxi. And the authors also tried to identify why or why not life teacher training works. Both descriptive and multivariate analysis are used in this paper. Findings – The authors find significant improvements in health and behavior. Specifically, compared to boarding students in control schools, 15 percent fewer students in treatment schools reported feeling cold while sleeping at night. The results also showed that student tardiness and misbehaviors after class declined significantly by 18 and 78 percent, respectively. However, the in-service life teacher training program had no measurable impact on boarding students’ BMI-for-age Z-score, number of misbehaviors in class, and academic performance. The analysis suggests that improved communication between life teachers and students might be one mechanism behind these results. Originality/value – This is the first empirical work which explored how to improve the welfare of boarding students via their life teachers. Because of the sudden increase in boarding students in rural China, it is almost certain that school personnel lack experience in managing boarding students. As such, one promising approach to improving student outcomes might be in-service training for life teachers.

Abstract:
In this article, Denis Hayes discusses the competence model for teacher training in England in the 1990s. This model uses Circulars — policy guidelines that list competence statements — to outline the level of achievement that student teachers must reach before obtaining qualified teacher status. Hayes considers the impact that the competence approach to monitoring standards of achievement has had on teacher-training institutions and student teachers. He explores questions of terminology and examines the limitations of using a competence model, the difficulties of separating competences for the purposes of assessment and of structuring competence statements in a hierarchy that reflects the way that student teachers progress in their ability to teach. He presents a case study based on his own institution's attempt to develop a hierarchy of competence acquisition and cautions that a competence approach to the training and assessment of teachers is extremely complex. Hayes concludes that, in aligning their programs with the statutory competence model, teacher-preparation institutions must not neglect the developmental aspect of the skills that enable student teachers to reach the competences.

There has long been concern about the confidence and performance of the so-called non-specialist teacher of Music in the primary school. Although much research has focused on the long-term solution of educating student teachers, it is important that practising teachers are not forgotten. Abstract:
AbstractThis study investigated whether a mental health promotion program delivered by primary school teachers to prevent internalising problems in children had any impact on the teachers' job-related affective wellbeing. Teacher job-related anxiety and job-related depression were measured before teaching the Aussie Optimism program, and after implementation at 12 and 24 months. Schools and teachers were randomised to one of three groups: Aussie Optimism with Teacher Training; Aussie Optimism with Teacher Training and Coaching; or the Usual Care control group, which implemented the regular Western Australian Health Education Curriculum. In all three groups, teachers taught lessons to promote student self-management and interpersonal skills during the last two years of primary school. Teachers in schools in the control group received training in Aussie Optimism after the first year of intervention. Data was collected from 405 primary school teachers in 63 government primary schools. Multiple hierarchical regression analyses showed partial support for the hypotheses, with teachers in the Training and Coaching intervention group reporting significantly lower levels of job-related anxiety at the 12-month assessment and depression at both the 12- and 24-month assessments when compared to teachers in the Usual Care control group. There were no significant differences between teachers in the Training only group and the control group after intervention.

Abstract:
The article determines that elementary school is the first level in the process of obtaining general education for children and in their general intellectual, physical and social development. in practice, accordingly, it sets the task for professional education as well – to prepare future elementary school teacher as a social personality, capable of solving certain problems and tasks of professional activity under the conditions of mastering a system of skills and competences. The success of the pedagogical activity of an elementary school teacher implies a special preparedness in the institution of higher education – the formation of knowledge, skills and pedagogical competences aimed at the exercise of professional functions. Study of experience of foreign countries on the professional pedagogical training of elementary school teachers is an important condition for the formation of theoretical and methodological bases for optimization of the training of elementary school teachers in Ukrainian HEIs. An analysis of current approaches to the preparation of future primary school teachers in France, the United Kingdom and Japan makes it possible to highlight the trends that are characteristic of European and Japanese education, namely: training teachers in higher education, two-level education, student development taking into account socio-cultural features, forming in them the readiness for professional mobility, to study throughout their professional activity, creating conditions for internships abroad. Progressive ideas of foreign experience can be taken into account in the national practice of teacher training. Further scientific inquiries may be directed to the study of the content filling of the teacher training programs and the peculiarities of the organization of the educational process in the institutions of higher education of foreign countries. Learning and using the experience of other countries is one of the main methods of designing educational reforms in Ukraine. Using foreign experience will help to avoid many mistakes. In addition, the integration of Ukraine into the world and European educational spaces requires adaptation of national educational legislation to pan-European educational principles and practices. These include, in particular, the existence of certain standards of education and professional activity of teachers.

Abstract:
The article examines the technology of personally oriented teaching using an example of studying the discipline «Didactics» by future primary teachers. The author proves the opinion that using of the personally oriented approach in the process of studying the disciplines intensifies the process of assimilation of knowledge, gives the creative character to it, the work of the students is being built on cooperation, mutual learning, stimulates them to an independent choice and to use the most important methods for them to study the educational material, to self-determination and self-realization. It is noted that in the process of studying didactics, students receive information about a person-centered teaching as an updated paradigm of modern education, enriching their knowledge of pedagogical technologies. The main requirements for the development of the didactic support of the personally oriented process are given, in particular: the teaching material must identify the student's experience, taking into account their previously acquired knowledge; the presentation of the educational material in the textbook should be aimed at transforming the personal experience of each student; harmonization of the student's experience with the given scientific content; the choice of a student from the educational material of a particular task; stimulating students to independently choose ways to study the educational material; providing control and evaluation. It is stated that future teachers should be aware of the purpose of a personally oriented lesson. To achieve the goal the use of various forms and methods of organizing learning activities will help, such as creating an atmosphere of interest for each student in the work of the class, stimulating students to statements, evaluating activities not only through the right-wrong, but also the originality, independence, inspiration of the students, encouragement, the desire to find their way of work, the creation of pedagogical situations of communication in the classroom, the announcement at the beginning of the lesson not only the topic, but also the methods of organizing learning activities, discussion at the end of the lesson not only what they have learned, but also what they hoped to achieve and they would like to do once more, the presentation of homework and discussion of ways to implement it. The article states that the study of three-point didactics (teacher-student - educational-informational environment) ensures the formation of professional competences for future specialists.

This article describes how the use of education technology by those responsible for teacher training is one of the training issues that are often associated with the importance of enhancing didactic efficiency and the procedural and logistical difficulties associated with the instructional design that are identified as the main sources of concern in the professionalization of teachers and sometimes lead to unjustified assumptions about the very nature of the formation. Understanding attitudes towards ICT is important in determining whether future teachers' perceptions about the advantages or disadvantages of using ICT in higher education may condition their proper use in teaching as this provides the basics for professional conduct that is most appropriate. The present article aims to investigate the attitudes of personal and didactic use of technologies and the perception of their digital skills in students attending the Degree Course in Primary Teacher Education at the University of Aquila Studies.

Abstract:
Teacher training in India has evolved from a circle system to normal schools and teacher training institutes/colleges. This progression was influenced by various events, debates and recommendations. With respect to the relevance of the teacher training institutions, ideas kept fluctuating, and several of the other adopted policy measures failed in the implementation phase. Initially, this led to the opening and closing of the normal schools, which later expanded into teacher training institutes/colleges. This paper attempts to present the historical developments in the field of teacher education around the axis of teacher training institutes, teachers’ qualifications, the teacher training course curriculum, and the status of teachers. For this paper, the government reports and reviews published in the periods both prior and subsequent to Independence have been studied using a historical method. It reveals that, in spite of 100 years of effort dedicated to improving teacher education, the availability of trained women teachers is far lower than the demand for them in schools. Unlike before, admission to any teacher training course for primary teachers requires at least 10 years of general education, and secondary school teachers need a degree. Though over these years the salaries of teachers have increased substantially, the deteriorating status of teachers and the teaching profession has been a source of constant concern for educationists and policymakers.

Abstract:
The analysis of training a future primary school teacher for the formation of environmental culture of primary school children revealed certain drawbacks: in the professional training of students of higher educational establishments, namely to theory and methods of ecological education studying is paid little attention; among the forms of organization of the educational process are dominated traditional ones (lectures and practical classes) of a reproductive nature; the potential of ecology as an integrated science has not been used; the resource of psychological and pedagogical subjects for environmental training of primary school teachers is not fully involved. All this creates a significant gap between the achievements of science and practice of environmental education in the direction of preparing future primary school teachers for the formation of environmental culture of primary school children. The article is devoted to the search for effective pedagogical conditions for training future primary school teachers for the formation of ecological culture of pupils. The literature on this problem is analyzed, which allows us to conclude that the opinions of scientists are marked by a contradiction about what conditions should be created to ensure the greatest efficiency of the educational process. In general, they determine the pedagogical conditions depending on the direction of their research, in particular: environmental training of future teachers; environmental training of future primary school teachers; formation of the teacher's readiness to intensify the educational process in primary school; development of ecological culture (pupils, future teachers); formation of pupils' caring attitude to nature, a sense of responsibility of pupils. We attach the following meaning to the essence of the concept «pedagogical conditions of preparation of the future primary school teacher for formation of ecological culture of pupils»: it is purposeful and objective possibilities of educational process and the factors and circumstances providing the corresponding process in unity of traditional and innovative approaches. The following pedagogical condition is defined: the organization of the educational process by means of interrelation of theoretical and practical training on the basis of introduction of new educational technologies.

Abstract:
This study sought to examine the quality of teaching practice (TP) mentoring in the teaching of music at primary school level through the distance mode of training at one college of education in Zimbabwe. The study examined the experiences and perceptions of lecturers and student teachers on TP mentoring in music within the context of a distance mode of teacher training. A purposive sample of 17 music student teachers and 11 lecturers was selected. The study employed a qualitative case study research design in which one-on-one interviews, focus group discussions and documentary analysis were used to collect data. The main conclusion from the study was that the distance approach to teacher training was not effectively utilised for teacher preparation in music due to inadequate music knowledge and skills of mentor teachers as well as weaknesses of the school curriculum. Recommendations drawn from these conclusions are that the teaching practice period should not be the same for all subjects and more demanding subjects such as music deserve to be practiced more. Student teachers specialising in music must be placed for teaching practice where there are music specialist teachers. This study also recommends that the placement of music student teachers for teaching practice be undertaken jointly by the teaching practice coordinators and the music specialist lecturer.

There are three incentives for developing this paper: In England there is a new (or rather a renewed) focus on the educational needs of school pupils of high ability We also have new standards and requirements in teacher education (‘initial teacher training’) Teacher training in England does not have a strong evidence base on which to plan development. Courses may benefit from strengthening such an evidence base. These factors have prompted this paper to examine some of the qualities and skills which, according to some key commentators, teachers need for effective teaching of able pupils within the ordinary classroom. It then compares these with the ‘competencies’ or standards which trainee teachers are required to achieve to become qualified teachers in England. It uses this comparison to propose some ways in which teacher training might be enhanced so that emerging teachers are better prepared to meet successfully the needs of able pupils in their mixed-ability classrooms.

Abstract:
Purpose In this paper, the results of an investigation aimed at analysing and comparing the environmental competences of future teachers undergoing training in two universities are presented. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the difference in the acquisition of environmental competences amongst two groups of students enrolled in two universities with different levels of introduction of the environmental education (EE) and sustainability contents in their curriculums. This objective is inserted into a wider finality: to provide recommendations regarding the redesign of pre-service teacher training curricula and learning programmes. Design/methodology/approach A specifically designed questionnaire was used in this study to analyse the environmental competencies of students in the final year of their degree in primary education in two Spanish universities. One of them had a highly environmentally oriented programme, and the other had a scarcely environmentally oriented programme. Findings Results show that no significant differences were observed in the results related to the greening level of the training programmes. Pre-service teachers have insufficient environmental knowledge, but with quite positive, responsible attitudes towards environmental issues, and pro-environmental actions that could be categorised as moderate. Results point to the need for further and better pre-service teacher training in environmental issues. Originality/value One of the main factors in the appropriate treatment of EE in schools is teacher training. Despite this principle being widely recognised, not all pre-service teacher training programmes adequately address EE. The added value of this paper is the comparison established between the students that followed a degree with a high impact of the environmental competences in its curriculum and another one that has very few references to these competences in the curriculum.
