Abstract:
Mixed mode surveys are defined as surveys that involve mixtures of different contact and response modes. They have become increasingly popular as a way to mitigate problems of coverage and response error related to single mode options. However, differences in survey mode, especially the presence or absence of an interviewer, may influence item response and nonresponse through social desirability, primacy or recency effects, and visual response. This chapter considers the advantages and disadvantages of various modes and of combining modes. Each research design should consider the costs, including “house” costs and costs to the respondent, and benefits of a mixed mode design before implementation.

Groothoff, Jaap W. Primary Hyperoxaluria. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199972135.003.0065.

Full text
Abstract:
Primary hyperoxalurias (PH) are rare autosomal recessive metabolic disorders characterized by an increased endogenous oxalate production which leads to the development of urolithiasis, nephrocalcinosis, and ultimately to renal failure.PH patients with severe renal failure develop life-threatening systemic oxalosis, which affects many organs such as bone, skin, retina, myocardium, vessel walls, and the central nervous system. So far, combined or sequential liver-kidney transplantation is the only therapeutic option for patients with advanced disease. Contrary to the former impression of a relatively mild course of disease in patients diagnosed as adults, recent data have shown that patients diagnosed in adulthood mostly present with established ESRD and systemic oxalosis. The fact that some of these patients respond to pyridoxine therapy underlines the importance of early diagnosis and measures to prevent renal failure and systemic oxalosis. All children with stone disease or nephrocalcinosis and all adults with recurrent stone disease should therefore be screened for PH.

Thun, Michael J., Martha S. Linet, James R. Cerhan, Christopher Haiman, and David Schottenfeld. Primary Prevention of Cancer. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190238667.003.0062.

Full text
Abstract:
Primary prevention has enormous potential to reduce the human, social, and economic costs of cancer worldwide. The following sections discuss the development and application of preventive interventions in six broad areas of public health: tobacco control, the prevention of obesity and physical inactivity, prevention of infection-related cancers, protection against excessive exposure to ultraviolet light, preventive drug therapies (chemoprevention), and the regulation of carcinogenic exposures. All of these areas affect multiple types of cancer and massive numbers of people. Different interventions are at varying stages of development. For example, effective, evidence-based approaches have been developed over several decades to reduce tobacco use, prevent chronic infection with hepatitis B virus, protect children from excessive sun exposure, regulate exposures in high-income countries, and reduce breast cancer incidence and recurrence in high-risk women. More recent efforts are seeking to identify upstream measures to prevent excessive weight gain, reduce caloric intake, and increase physical activity.

Full text
Abstract:
Ependymomas are rare primary central nervous system (CNS) tumors that are thought to arise from ependymal cells lining the ventricular system located throughout the CNS. Ependymomas occur in all age groups but are more common in the pediatric population. Ependymomas typically present as mass lesions within the ventricular system, brain or spinal cord parenchyma. As with most central nervous system tumors, pathologic evaluation is required for definitive diagnosis. Ependymomas are typically treated with a combination of surgery and radiotherapy although this varies depending on tumor location, tumor grade, patient age, extent of tumor resection, and other pretreatment factors. Recent molecular studies demonstrate molecularly defined tumor heterogeneity that appears to have a region-specific pattern. Translating the emerging molecular profiles of ependymomas into improved treatment strategies is the primary goal of ongoing research efforts.

Turri, John. Primate Social Cognition and the Core Human Knowledge Concept. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190865085.003.0013.

Full text
Abstract:
The author reviews recent work from armchair and cross-cultural epistemology on whether humans possess a knowledge concept as part of a universal “folk epistemology.” The work from armchair epistemology fails because it mischaracterizes ordinary knowledge judgments. The work from cross-cultural epistemology provides some defeasible evidence for a universal folk epistemology. He argues that recent findings from comparative psychology establish that humans possess a species-typical knowledge concept. More specifically, recent work shows that knowledge attributions are a central part of primate social cognition, used to predict others’ behavior and guide decision-making. The core primate knowledge concept is that of truth detection (across different sensory modalities) and retention (through memory), and may also include rudimentary forms of indirect truth discovery through inference. In virtue of their evolutionary heritage, humans inherited the primate social-cognitive system and thus share this core knowledge concept.
