La prima parte del saggio si sofferma sul conflitto e sulle possibili convergenze tra il concetto di individualismo e quello di socialismo: sebbene siano stati spesso pensati in contraddizione, individualismo e socialismo possono anche essere visti come due concetti sinergici e complementari. Ciň č possibile se si assume la validitÀ della tesi, sostenuta da autori come Guyau e Kropotkin, secondo la quale nell'autentico sviluppo dell'individuo non c'č posto per la sopraffazione ai danni dell'altro. La seconda parte dell'articolo si sofferma sul rapporto fra individualismo e modernitÀ, mostrando come la modernitÀ sia stata intesa sia come l'epoca della individualizzazione, sia come il tempo della omologazione massificante; e si conclude con l'idea che la nostra epoca sia caratterizzata piuttosto da molte forme di pseudo-individualismo.

Il tema dell’evasione dal carcere risulta essere tra quelli attorno ai quali, in epoca di utrumque ius, si appuntò l’attenzione tanto della dottrina civilistica quanto di quella canonistica (oltre che di grandi nomi della cultura occidentale come Tommaso d’Aquino). Attraverso il ricorso a diversi generi letterari (commentaria, tractatus, consilia, decisiones, practicae), il presente contributo si prefigge il compito di illustrare alcune delle conclusioni più rilevanti sul tema, prendendo specialmente in considerazione quel torno di tempo dato dal tramontare del Medioevo nella prima Modernità.

Allo sguardo del lettore contemporaneo, Il Milione sorprende per la modernità con cui il suo autore si rapporta e descrive la straordinaria varietà di genti, usi e costumi che incontra durante il suo viaggio, con un’apertura e una mancanza di pregiudizi sorprendenti per un uomo del suo tempo. Marco Polo tende a sottolineare la novità e la bellezza di ciò che il suo occhio vede, rivelandosi capace di andare ben oltre le rappresentazioni correnti dell’Altro: il tartaro, il saraceno, l’infedele vengono per la prima volta visti e analizzati attraverso una lente obiettiva, che lascia presagire un’etica nuova, quella mercantesca, e anticipa di secoli alcune caratteristiche inclusive dell’esotismo moderno. Mostrandosi pronto a cogliere aspetti della magnificenza e della spiritualità dell’Altro che nessun occidentale aveva conosciuto né tanto meno lodato, Marco si mostra capace di andare oltre secoli di paura e di rifiuto, che avevano caratterizzato l’Altro come un monstrum, una differenza da temere o, in base alla stessa ottica, cercare di convertire. Uno sguardo sorprendentemente moderno, che non cessa di affascinare il lettore.

La presenza della "Grande Guerra" in Rete, anche ad un primo approccio, lascia immediatamente stupito l'osservatore per la sua consistenza e molteplicitÀ di espressioni. L'esperienza traumatica fondante del novecento (l'inizio del "secolo breve" delle guerre mondiali) ha trovato in Internet uno spazio congeniale sia alla modernitÀ del conflitto che alla multimedialitÀ e all'ipertestualitÀ del World Wide Web. L'autore, immedesimandosi in un ipotetico utente della Rete interessato alla storia della Prima Guerra Mondiale, ne segue il percorso di ricerca per analizzare le fonti di informazione e di documentazione offerte dal Web. La sua attenzione si focalizza su Google e Wikipedia ed in particolare sui collegamenti esistenti tra il motore di ricerca e l'enciclopedia. L'autore ne apprezza le funzionalitÀ e i servizi non ignorando i problemi derivanti dall'utilizzo di tali risorse. L'articolo si conclude con un approfondimento sulle sitografie on-line (directory e portali) relative alla Prima Guerra Mondiale, che conferma la loro indispensabile funzione di selezione e di guida nel Web.

Il contributo intende indagare il rapporto tra la nozione di eroe, la morte e la fine del racconto nella difficile transizione dal romanzo al poema eroico a metà Cinquecento, prima dell’esperienza tassiana. In particolare, vengono indagati e posti a confronto, al fine di metterne in rilievo gli elementi di continuità e discontinuità, i duelli risolutivi dell’Orlando Furioso di Ludovico Ariosto e dell’Italia liberata dai Goti di Gian Giorgio Tissino, che rappresentano due poli opposti ma interdipendenti della suddetta transizione. Nei duelli tra Ruggiero e Rodomonte, e nella disfida di Lipadusa, nel poema ariostesco, e nella parabola di Corsamonte e nello scontro finale narrati da Trissino, si concretizza, attraverso la dialettica epos/romanzo, un nuovo modello eroico, in grado di rispondere alle esigenze della modernità.

Baldo Rossi (Pioltello, Milano, 1868 - Milano, 1932) fu chirurgo dell'Ospedale Maggiore di Milano a cavallo fra il secolo XIX e il secolo XX. Egli operò prima della diffusione dei sulfamidici, e può da un lato essere considerato fra gli ultimi chirurghi della vecchia guar- dia, quanto alla sua formazione universitaria, mentre dall'altro fu estremamente attento alla modernità e all'innovazione. Fu protagonista dei grandi sviluppi della chirurgia asettica, della traumatologia, dell'ortopedia, della chirurgia militare, della riabilitazione. Attraverso la sua ergobiografia si possono ripercorrere tappe fondamentali dello sviluppo dell'Ospedale Maggiore milanese. Nel saggio si sottolinea anche l'importanza di alcune fonti, quali i cataloghi della produzione industriale degli strumenti chirurgici, per la rico- struzione di avvenimenti della storia ospedaliera, ai quali Baldo Rossi diede fondamentali contributi.

L'autore ha inteso porre in evidenza il contesto in cui nascevano a Roma due periodici aperti al mondo femminile, "La donna italiana" e "Una donna bizzarra", che rispetto ad altre similari realtà giornalistiche della Penisola si muovevano in un territorio, quello pontificio, nel quale la libertà di stampa trovava maggiori limitazioni che altrove. Dalle voci emerse nei due giornali romani si è voluto evidenziare il comune e coraggioso invito rivolto alle donne a partecipare alla generale richiesta di riforme liberali, nel desiderio di stimolarle ad impegnarsi nella trasformazione di una società più aperta e più giusta, specie in tema di rappresentanza politica e modernità giuridica. Il contributo è arricchito da alcune rare lettere conservate all'Archivio del Museo Centrale del Risorgimento, che contribuiscono ad accrescere la comprensione del ruolo delle donne prima e dopo l'unità d'Italia.

Vero e proprio fenomeno culturale del XX secolo, in ambito architettonico il cinema rappresenta da sempre il simbolo della modernità e del progresso tecnologico. Nella storia dell’architettura moderna, la progettazione delle sale cinematografiche va di pari passo con la sperimentazione di nuove forme architettoniche rese possibili dall’impiego di moderni materiali da costruzione (quali in primis il cemento armato), divenendo un importante banco di prova tanto per la verifica tecnologica degli stessi quanto per l’immaginazione spaziale di nuovi ambienti, così divergenti da quelli propriamente classici dei teatri. Spazio architettonico fruibile e funzionale al vissuto umano, il cinema diventa rapidamente espressione di crescita, di sviluppo sociale ed economico e di prestigio urbanistico. Anche in Portogallo, come nel resto dell’Europa, le sale cinematografiche sono segnali tangibili del cambiamento stilistico e formale dell’architettura della prima metà del Novecento, facendosi portavoce di un’immagine nuova che rapidamente adornerà le città portoghesi d’un aspetto moderno e scenografico al tempo stesso.

Il mondo sensibile è conosciuto mediante la nostra sensibilità. Oltre alla facoltà della sensibilità, la persona umana ha anche quella della ragione e dell’intelletto. Sembra però che la cultura del nostro secolo XXI abbia smarrito il significato di queste due facoltà, cioè che abbia capito che l’intelletto non sia altro dalla ragione e che il termine “ragione” valga per indicare tutte le dimensioni o capacità dell’intelligenza umana. La nostra riflessione vorrebbe precisamente soffermarsi su questa tendenza culturale e criticarla, percorrendo alcune delle tappe storiche del costituirsi della differenza tra la “ragione” e l’“intelletto”: prima nella Grecia con Socrate, Platone e Aristotele, poi nel secolo XIII con Tommaso d’Aquino, e quindi nella modernità, con Cartesio e Kant. Si dirà che la mancanza di integrazione tra ragione e intelletto non conduce l’umanità verso la sua integralità, anzi che la priva dell’eccellenza della propria essenza.

Riassunto Il contributo è concepito come caso studio sul raccordo tra il movimento igienista e cremazionista italiano nel XIX secolo da una parte e il nazionalismo italiano nato in epoca risorgimentale dall’altra. Si dimostra che l’idea dell’italianità, considerata finora piuttosto sul piano linguistico e culturale, era altrettanto inerente al progetto di una modernità basata sulle scienze naturali. Il paradigma delle scienze naturali, corrente all’epoca, si diffuse in prima linea attraverso le opere divulgative e belletristiche dell’antropologo e medico Paolo Mantegazza (1831–1910). Mantegazza si sentiva investito, accanto ai suoi colleghi, di contribuire alla formazione del „carattere italiano“ e di creare – con i propri strumenti – l’uomo nuovo che, libero da ogni infermità fisica e sano sul piano mentale e psicologico, si sarebbe distinto per la sua produttività e la sua cultura avanzata. La sua visione era permeata da idee eugeniche estreme che contemplavano anche l’annientamento delle „vite indegne di vita“ in un crematorio.

Il saggio intende delucidare la genesi delle nozioni di "filosofia scolastica" e "seconda scolastica". Le ricerche svolte fino a oggi sulla storia della nozione di "scolastica" non sembrano aver preso in esame la questione della possibile diversità della storia della nozione di "filosofia scolastica" rispetto alla storia delle nozioni di "teologia scolastica" e di "scolastica" tout court. In questo studio viene proposta la tesi secondo la quale la storia della nozione di "filosofia scolastica", benché strettamente connessa con la storia della nozione di "teologia scolastica", non è identica a quest'ultima e vengono presentati elementi e indizi circa i tempi e i modi nei quali, tra prima modernità e inizio del XX secolo, l'aggettivo "scolastica" fu utilizzato per designare un tipo di filosofia che viene ritenuto essere altro dal genere di filosofia praticato dagli autori moderni. I risultati raggiunti forniscono la base per determinare le ragioni che portarono Carlo Giacon a formulare, negli anni '40 del XX secolo, la nozione di "seconda scolastica", della quale vengono individuate le originarie finalità e implicazioni teoretiche.

L’avanguardia futurista ha compiuto la rivoluzione copernicana delle arti; la sua grammatica, che ha innovato la lingua italiana, è stata un modello per la letteratura del tempo. Specchio della modernità, ha creato il mito dell’industrializzazione, della civiltà delle macchine, della tecnologia, del dinamismo universale, del vitalismo titanico, del bellicismo, del riscatto sociale, dell’italianismo, contro ogni nostalgia passatista. Come non si può staccare un fiore dalle radici, così nel movimento futurista non è possibile scindere nettamente il momento estetico dal contesto politico in cui è fermentato. La sua ideologia politica ha guardato a destra e a sinistra. Con gli occhi di Nino Pino Balotta, poeta e scienziato siciliano, personaggio controverso, ispirato dall’ideologia socialista, seguace e coscienza critica del movimento, viene qui letta una prima parte della vicenda futurista. Per la seconda, vale il racconto critico dalla genesi ai felici, odierni, esiti della poetica futurista, incluse le vicende storiche del futurismo di sinistra e di destra, con le posizioni non monolitiche di Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. Irrompe, nella terza, il vulcanico Umberto Boccioni, anch’egli socialista eterodosso.

Dire o non dire la verità? Mentire a fin di bene? Dire subito tutta la verità, oppure farla trapelare progressivamente, tenendo conto della capacità che l’interlocutore ha di sopportarla? Questi dilemmi etici si pongono nei più svariati campi professionali e, prima ancora, nella nostra vita quotidiana. Le diverse tradizioni che hanno dato origine alla cultura occidentale, a cominciare dalla cultura greca e da quella giudaico-cristiana, hanno avuto atteggiamenti diversificati nei confronti della verità e della menzogna? E la modernità come si è posta di fronte a questo tema? Infine, come si è sviluppata la riflessione filosofica su questi temi? Come si sono posti autori quali Platone, Agostino, Machiavelli, Montaigne, Grozio, Kant, Constant, Feyerabend, MacIntyre, Sandel, di fronte a questo problema? Dopo aver preso in esame queste questioni il saggio prova a dare una risposta alla difficile problematica, facendo leva sulla nozione aristotelica di phronesis e su quella kantiana del giudizio riflettente, mettendone alla prova l’efficacia soprattutto nel campo della bioetica e della pratica clinica in medicina. ---------- Can we lie for a good purpose? Is it better to tell the whole truth immediately, or to leak it progressively, taking into account the interlocutor’s capacity to suffer? These ethical dilemmas are often raised in the most varied professional fields and first of all in our daily life. Do the different traditions that gave rise to western culture share similar attitudes towards truth and lies? What about Greek culture? What about Judeo-Christian culture? What about Modernity? How has philosophical reflection developed these topics? What did Plato, Augustine, Machiavelli, Grotius, Kant, Constant, Feyerabend, MacIntyre and Sandel think about these issues? After dealing with these difficult questions, this short essay tries to look for an answer in the Aristotelian concept of phronesis and in the Kantian notion of reflective judgement, testing these conceptual tools through bioethical and clinical medical cases.

La cultura fascista è spesso associata con un’attitudine anti-modernista. In realtà, come questo articolo intende dimostrare, tematiche moderniste attraversano costantemente la cultura di estrema destra in Italia come in Francia e in Germania. Diversamente dal libro ormai canonico di Roger Griffin (Modernism and Fascism, 2007), questo articolo non analizza il mito della ‘rigenerazione’ etnico-nazionale (mito che, sostengo, è presente anche nelle prospettive anti-moderniste), ma focalizza in particolare sulla glorificazione culturale dell’industria e della tecnica, e poi sulla riconciliazione dell’arte con lo scenario industriale. Attraverso un’ampia ricognizione del milieu culturale francese, tedesco e italiano, l’articolo presenta al lettore una prima mappatura concernente la complessa relazione fra modernismo e cultura fascista.

Edwin Maxwell FRY and Jane Drew are best known for their role in the construction of Chandigarh alongside Le Corbusier, however, their Indian experience was proceeded by a long career in West Africa that began during WWII and lasted until the end of the 50's. Fry&Drew were active in Ghana and Nigeria constructing an impressive amount of buildings: schools, universities, houses, villages, office buildings and museums. Their on-site experience was conceptualized in the book Tropical Architecture in the Dry and Humid Zones published in its final version in 1964. This paper aims to analyze the manual as an attempt to establish a cosmopolitan and modern design system specific for the tropical areas. An experimental and scientific approach that saw in climatic data a tool in the creation of a new rootedness of modern architecture not based on cultural analysis or vernacular reinterpretation but on the complex analysis of local conditions in order to provide inhabitants with suitable design solutions. Tropical Architecture in the Dry and Humid Zones as a manifesto of a regionalist modernism, two apparently opposite terms that find a reconciliation in a design system that seeks to build a new cosmopolitan modernity.

Il paper segue lo sviluppo del pensiero di Ortega Y Gasset avendo come focus il saggio del 1925 La deshumanización del arte, in cui il filosofo spagnolo cerca di fornire una sintesi concettuale dell'arte dell'avanguardie attraverso una precisa grammatica teorica: la metafora poetica, l’oggetto estetico, l’arte come principio di irrealtà. The aesthetics of Ortega y Gasset is part, with originality, of the modernist debate of the first half of the twentieth century. The paper follows the development of Ortega Y Gasset's thought having as focus the essay of 1925 "La deshumanización del arte", in which the Spanish philosopher tries to provide a conceptual synthesis of avant-garde art through a precise theoretical grammar: poetic metaphor, aesthetic object, art as principle of unreality.

Located at the foothills of the Sivalik Mountains, Chandigarh was the dream city of independent India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. In 1952, Nehru commissioned the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier to design Chandigarh. Scholars often locate in Corbusier’s plans an urban modernity that required a break with the past. Moving away from such scholarship, this article will argue that Chandigarh marked a climactic moment in Le Corbusier’s career when he tried to weave together modern architecture with tradition, and through it, human beings with nature. A careful study of the cosmic iconography of Chandigarh clearly reveals that nature for Le Corbusier was more than a vast expanse of greenery: it was organized in symbolic ways, as a cosmic form emblematic of Hindu mythologies. I will argue that in addition to local conditions – economic and cultural – that impacted the actual execution of Le Corbusier’s plans, cosmic iconography shaped a modernism profoundly reliant on Hindu traditions. This iconography also inspired a new generation of Indian architects like Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi (1927 – present). Doshi played a key role in authoring the postcolonial architectural discourse in India. Following Le Corbusier, he advocated an architectural modernism anchored in sacred Hindu traditions.

‘Communism is dead’, crowed a recent Prime Minister, little realizing that the shaky condition of capitalism would precipitate her downfall in short order. ‘Socialist art is a phenomenon of the past’, pronounced many post-modernist critics, who equated creative expressions of radical politics with a modernist aesthetic they had already consigned to their re-interpretation of history. Yet as the developed economies totter from one crisis to the next, interspersed with stock market upheavals or corruption scandals, and the ‘new world order’ fails to materialize, a new left-wing idealism is beginning to assert itself in the work of several German composers, and the growing number of discs of their music testifies to the existence of a substantial international audience for their output. It is a movement of considerable diversity, but also genuine sophistication, for it takes account of the limitation of modernism, and is not averse to encompassing expressions of radicalism from the ‘romantic’ era, where appropriate. Thus, it does not shun post-modernism, but incorporates those features which have not been sucked into the new world chaos, or into the prevalent nostalgia, usually associated with the banner of ‘pluralism’. Above all, the new radicalism reaffirms certain fundamental truths, respected by socialism, which have been overlooked both by postmodernists and proponents of the ‘new world order’. It also asserts the importance of artistic integrity at a time when consumerism is undermining creative values.

Is knowledge perceived in conceptionand application as systemic dichotomy between the purely epistemic(in the metaphysically a priori sense) and the purely ontic (in thepurely positivistically a posteriori sense) at all a reflection of reality?Is knowledge possible in such a dichotomy or plurality?Answers to these foundational questions are primal in order tounderstand a critique of modernist synthesis in Islamic thought thathas been raging among Muslim scholars for some time now. The essay itself abounds ingrammatical and typographical errors, while the swnmary/translation isdone very well. There is enough evidence that Shimogaki has a sharpmind, and I anticipate eagerly future works.Unfortunately, Shimogaki 's subject matter is not very enlightening,even though many reasons are given for the study of The Islamic Left.Hanafi is located firmly in a reformist tradition with al Afghani and• Abduh. L’articolo intende fornire una breve disamina delle riflessioni riservate alla punteggiatura da parte di alcune tra le principali grammatiche del Settecento francese, allo scopo di segnalarne la modernità, la profondità d’analisi e l’influenza che esercitarono sulla sintassi moderna, non solo d’oltralpe. Una prima sezione è destinata a osservare come, di fronte alla storia recente dell’interpunzione, i grammatici illuministi si scostino sensibilmente dalle tendenze imperanti in Italia. Essi, infatti, non riservano all’argomento spazio esiguo e liminare, né si limitano a fornire semplici regole d’uso oscillanti tra un’interpretazione pausativa e un’interpretazione sintattica dei segni, e non di rado ridotte a vaghezze sul libero arbitrio degli scriventi. Al contrario, propongono osservazioni ampie e acute, poco o per nulla connesse alla mera prassi (dunque scarsamente fruibili a livello didattico), e perlopiù relate al problematico rapporto tra oralità e scrittura, ai cambiamenti verificatisi nel tempo entro il sistema scrittorio e ai fondamenti logici e semantici che presiedono all’organizzazione del discorso, cui la punteggiatura prende attivamente parte. Si procede poi con l’osservazione diretta di alcuni scritti, in particolare dei notevoli esempi forniti dalle opere di Claude Buffier, dell’abate Girard e di Nicolas Beauzée. Pur nella difformità delle trattazioni, tali grammatici condividono un approccio ragionativo al problema, che prende avvio da un’analisi minuziosa del testo e che offre altresì i presupposti per un fertile dialogo tra indirizzi interpretativi talora divergenti. Le loro proposte giungono, tra Settecento e Ottocento, anche in Italia, al punto che uno scrittore quale il Manzoni dei Promessi Sposi sembra venirne influenzato. Di qui, una casistica che lo dimostri. Si pensi, ad esempio, all’impiego della virgola tra soggetto e predicato – che i grammatici italiani teorizzano solo a partire dal Novecento, con il Malagòli – quando il primo sia espanso o da tematizzare; e all’uso del corsivo – ancora considerato, in ambiente peninsulare, appannaggio del tipografo – per segnalare la citazione, nel testo, di un altro testo scritto: riflessioni riscontrabili, almeno sino a Ottocento inoltrato, nella sola grammatica del Beauzée. A communicative interpretation of punctuation in the French grammar books of the XVIII century: manzonian examples The article provides a brief examination of the reflections on punctuation in some of the main eighteenth century French grammar books, in order to point out their modernity, depth of their analysis and the influence they exerted on modern syntax, not only in France. The first section observes how, in the face of the recent history of punctuation, the grammarians of the Enlightenment deviated considerably from the prevailing trends in Italy. In fact, they dedicated ample space to the subject, going beyond providing simple rules for use that oscillated between a pausative interpretation and a syntactic interpretation of the signs, which not infrequently were reduced to vagueness regarding the free will of the writers. The ample and acute observations, barely connected to mere practice (therefore scarcely usable at a didactic level), were mostly related to the problematic relationship between orality and writing, changes that occurred over time within the writing system and to the logical and semantic foundations that presided over the organization of discourse, where punctuation took an active part. We then proceed with the direct observation of some writings, in particular remarkable examples provided by the works of Claude Buffier, Abbot Girard and Nicolas Beauzée. Despite the differences in their treatments, these grammarians shared a reasoned approach to the problem, which began with a detailed analysis of the text and which also offered the basis for a fertile dialogue between interpretative, sometimes divergent, approaches. Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, their proposals reached Italy, where Manzoni, in Promessi Sposi, seemed to have been influenced by them. Hence, a series of cases demonstrate this. Think, for example, of the use of the comma between subject and predicate – that Italian grammarians theorized only from the twentieth century with Malagòli – when the first was expanded or thematized; or the use of italics – still considered, in a peninsular environment, the prerogative of the typographer – to signal a citation, in the text, of another written text: reflections that can be found, at least until the late nineteenth century, only in the grammar book by Beauzée. Finally, a few concluding considerations place these works within studies on punctuation and clarify the link between them and Manzoni’s text, also in relation to the diffusion of the communicative-textual paradigm in the Italian grammatical panorama.

However, in the wake of the decolonial turn they are enjoying a revival of interest and restoration. In Africa this has led to a renewed interest in African Religion. Five approaches are made to the topic by its non-practitioners – that it does not exist, that it is evil, that it is inadequate, that it is preparation for the Christian gospel, or that it is a form of indigenous religion and has integrity in its own right. A particular debate has emerged over the past twenty years concerning nomenclature. How should African Religion be understood and what should it be called? Two possibilities have emerged, the primal and the indigenous. The primal discourse emphasises the role that African Religion plays in the shaping of religion generally and Christianity particularly. The indigenous discourse has developed in opposition to this and emphasises the particularity and uniqueness of African Religion as a species of indigenous religion to be understood in its own right.

Presenti in tutti i principali testi di dietetica, i meloni erano visti con sospetto a causa della loro umidità, che si credeva potesse causare putrefazione nello stomaco; questi, però, erano anche oggetto di un’attenta estetica della tavola e una merce di valore. I meloni erano oggetto di speciali tecniche di coltivazione che consistevano in complesse procedure “artificiali” che prevedevano l’uso di letame e fango. Concentrandosi sui testi di agronomia del sedicesimo e diciassettesimo secolo, sull’interpretazione dei sogni, sui decreti e i consulti di salute pubblica, sulla magia naturale e sulla maniera in cui Ulisse Aldrovandi raccoglieva informazioni, questo articolo afferma che i meloni erano al centro sia della simbologia cosmologica che della sperimentazione pratica, una combinazione che è stata centrale negli sviluppi della “rivoluzione scientifica”.

Abstract Modernity as a set of attitudes based on reason, or as the cultivation of scientific temper, was informed by the imperative of development in a postcolonial state like India. Alongside the rise of democracy, there was the pressing need for removing poverty and ensuring fulfilment of basic needs for the common people. It is in this sphere of addressing poverty and underdevelopment that India became modern in a very material and substantive sense. The paper makes a case for an understanding of modernity that is deeply rooted in the material needs of the people and traces this impulse of development modernity from the time of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru till the present government led by Narendra Modi. While doing so, it problematises Nehru’s and Modi’s statist understanding of development and brings them to conversation to understand the continuing promise of modernity predicated on development. In the process both Nehru and Modi are interpreted vis-à-vis the times they lived in as well as their responses to what constituted India’s core values, their relationship with modernity and development’s place in it.

La definizione di un’inedita gamma valoriale — suscitata dalla modernità — viene sperimentata nella modifica degli atteggiamenti sottoscritti dalla popolazione rurale, per i quali non mancavano le osservazioni critiche di intellettuali come Pier Paolo Pasolini, che avvertiva, preoccupato, quanto potesse essere infido, per quella umanità, il cedere alla lusinga del comfort. Simili richiami alla responsabilità e al guardare con prudenza ai moderni ritrovati andavano interessando anche i prodotti di architettura, soprattutto per gli edifici sacri — da ricostruire o da realizzare ex-novo — che cedendo il passo alla modernità andavano rinunciando, in molti casi, all’implicita genesi di “opera monumentale,” essendo, per antonomasia, i luoghi di culto riconosciuti, da sempre, quali edifici identitari. S obzirom na to da je u referentnoj literaturi istaknut aktivni modni interes studenata, njih 24 uključeno je u provedbu kvalitativnoga istraživanja metodom fokus grupe održane u četiri navrata sredinom 2020. Opći cilj bio je istražiti studentske modne prakse u svakodnevici s posebnim osvrtom na principe brze i etičke modne potrošnje kako bi se utvrdilo prema kojem se modelu profiliraju. Iako sudionici istraživanja nisu raspolagali s konkretnim saznanjima o (ne)etičnim praksama modnih trgovina te su u pravilu konzumirali brzu modu, iskazali su otvorenost naspram etičkih proizvoda smatrajući kako moda ne bi trebala biti platforma ugnjetavanja uključenih aktera. Nalazima je detektirano i postojanje (post)modernoga potrošačkoga sukoba tako što su se sudionici okarakterizirali modnim individualistima koji su istodobno slijedili modne trendove uz opće negiranje utjecaja na vlastite potrošačke izbore dok su se u većini inspirirali modnim sadržajima s društvenih mreža, iz okoline te iz različitih medija. Razvivši listu modnih ulaganja kombinirali su kvalitetu i kvantitetu, nerijetko se otkrivajući masovnim ekskluzivistima. Pokazana slojevitost i hibridnost studentske modne potrošnje u konačnici je interpretirana u kontekstu (post)moderne životno-stilske ambivalentnosti te je ukazana potreba za većom edukacijom i društvenim angažmanom studenata na ovu temu.

Pratibha Ray’s anthropological novel The Primal Land (1993) documents the history of India’s endangered Bonda tribe dwelling in the secluded mountains of Koraput, Odisha. Not free from the interferences of the outside world, the Bondas face the threat of losing their tribal identity. This complicated position and their struggle between existence and identity, an intersubjective reality, was triggered by oppressive internal and external surroundings due to the pressures of modernity. The discussion focuses on their inherent cultural practices causingconstant internal feuds and the government’s intrusion with development plans leading to exploitation, cultural dilution, and socio-ethnic tension. Thus the paper decodes the difficulties of the Bondas and concludes that their existence cannot be ensured without the loss of primal identity.

Which is the primal sin, pride or idolatry? The Augustinian tradition highlights pride, an emphasis reinforced by theological critiques of modernity. However, the Old Testament and Romans 1 point to idolatry as the fundamental form of sin. Analysis of Augustine's account of human acts, the nature of evil, and the structure of sinful love frames a close reading of one of the most famous episodes in his Confessions, the youthful theft of pears. In this autobiographical reflection, Augustine illuminates the paradox of pride. Self-love is unstable, and it resolves into the pursuit of finite goods that we wrap in the false tinsel of imagined divinity. In this way, Augustine's phenomenology of pride is consistent with the biblical consensus that idolatry is the primal expression of sin.

Abstract The paper analyses Walter Benjamin’s conceptions of time in the context of Anthropocene thought. In the paper, I study Benjamin’s figures of time and discuss their contribution to understanding the Anthropocene as a critical present. I analyse Walter Benjamin’s temporalities of modernity, focusing progress and primal history (Urgeschichte) in the light of Benjamin’s idea of catastrophe. I start by explaining Benjamin’s ideas in the context of the Anthropocene discourse. I then proceed to the analysis of specific figures of time, namely of primal history (Urgeschichte), progress, catastrophe and nowtime (Jetztzeit). Questioning the ambiguity of Benjamin’s concept of history, I show a hypothetical, in Benjamin’s sense revolutionary side of the Anthropocene time. In the light of Benjamin’s thought, the latter depicts the utopian, to some extent apocalyptical horizon of the absent border between man and nature.

As a manner of introduction, the editor of the book under review gives the background to Islam Hadhari or Civilisational Islam, essentially a comprehensive blueprint for progress postulated by the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri (now Tun) Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in the 2004 National Front Manifesto.
In “Civilizational Dialogue and the Islamic World”, Seyyed Hossein Nasr traces the Greek, Sanskrit, and Latin Christian origins of the word ‘civilisation’. He speaks of the “Presiding Idea”, or “heavenly-given dispensation” that underlies all traditional civilisations, and attributes the decline of Islamic civilisation from the eighteenth century onward partly to colonisation and partly to the (erroneous) efforts of the Muslims themselves to uncritically emulate the West. Islamic civilisation, he concludes, is still best suited for inter-civilisational dialogue, occupying as it does the globe’s “middle belt”.

Particular attention is paid to artistic craftsmanship which demonstrates the attitude of the exhibition’s organisers to tradition and modernity. Crafts constituted about two thirds of the exhibits. Such a wide range of artistic visions allowed various trends in the development of 1920’s Vilnius art to be shown.

Per anni dimenticato perché non in linea con la cultura dominante, Domenico Sorrentino, con un’importante e complessa opera ricostruttiva dell’intero pensiero tonioliano, ne ha riproposto un’interessante lettura in chiave moderna. In questo lavoro si cerca di approfondire non tanto il Toniolo economista, quanto il politico, assertore di una società democratica fondata sul popolarismo. Questa costruzione sociale può essere una risposta al populismo che sembra caratterizzare la politica dei nostri tempi? Even today, apologists for modernist and post-modernist architecture frequently appeal to what, following Sir Karl Popper, I will call historicist arguments. Such arguments have a particular poignancy when they are used to justify the replacement of some familiar part of an ancient city with some intentionally untraditional structure; as, for example, when a familiar nineteenth century block of offices in a prime city site is swept away to make room for something supposedly more fitting to the ‘new millennium’, a ‘twentieth century contribution to monumental architecture’, a building ‘of substantial importance to the present age’. Similarly, those architects or consumers of architecture who fail to conform to whatever stylistic demands the age is held to demand are marginalized in many supposedly serious discussions of architecture, and made to feel out of place and out of time.

Abstract This article positions David Milch's Deadwood (2004–6) as a narrative universe that merits serious theoretical scrutiny on account of its far-reaching account of the dawn of American technocapitalism. While Kittlerian media-archaeological wisdom situates media modernity's primal scene at the turn of the century (with the emergence of the Edisonian gramophone, film, and typewriter), Deadwood figures the multimedia Big Bang as having taken place a few decades prior, with the advent of telegraphy, photography, and railroads. In the world of Deadwood, this “Discourse Network 1876” condenses in the spectral figure of George Hearst, a tyrannical mining and media magnate who descends on Deadwood to seize and consolidate the area's gold mining rights. When community leaders Al Swearengen and Seth Bullock rise up to resist Hearst, he wields the cybernetic grid of Discourse Network 1876 to run roughshod over the town's fragile social compact. Although this vision of the American Leviathan is a bleak one (and therein resides much of Deadwood's tragic mythos), Milch's Deadwood: The Movie (2019) revisits the town a decade later and rehabilitates the notion that a tightknit community of concerned citizens can, under the right conditions, serve as a viable, but precarious, bulwark against the Hearstian electrical storm.

Because conversion was Spain’s imperial project in all its colonies, the church, as an institution, became a major player in the colonial enterprise. Christianization became a constitutive force in the country’s colonial affairs as friars were sent to the archipelago to realize Spain’s mission of conversion. From early accounts, it can be surmised that it was the work of religious missionaries that became the most influential factor in the transformation of the cultural behavior of the people in acquiring a Westernized consciousness. The article looks at the conditions that underpinned the transformation of church music in nineteenth-century modernity in the colony, approached through the prism of published music scores. It brings to light both friars and non-religious church musicians who had an active role in transforming the musical life of the colonial capital, being prime movers in the musical scene of the city and contributing to the formation of the city’s sacred music culture. It is interesting to explore this construction within the musical milieu of Intramuros when the church got preoccupied with significant developments of modernity particularly that of lithographic music printing.

According to Malaysia’s former Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad, local horror cinema is counterproductive to building a progressive society. While the genre is now at the peak of its popularity, it was banned throughout the 1990s and accused of tainting modernity with ‘backwards’ ways of thinking. Modernity’s progress through erasure has already been conceptualized as a repression of various cultural contexts, religious practices, and pre-colonial epistemologies, yet its ontological implications are rarely investigated. Nonmodern ontologies, such as animism, are aesthetically, narratively, and theoretically embedded in a number of contemporary horrors, especially those created by independent or art-house directors, who see in the genre the possibility of discussing the ontological taboos of modernity, such as the personhood of the nonhuman. In contrast to an ethnographic approach to animism, I here read it as a method of disruption: a negation of the idea that cinema is the quintessential modern medium. Animism, as a practice of relational personhood (Bird-David, 1999) renegotiates ontological boundaries modernity claimed to have set in stone: between self and other, nature and culture, humans and nonhumans, belief and practice, religion and play. By taking animism as a theoretical framework rather than a cultural trace, I highlight various points of intersection between James Lee’s gory slasher horror Histeria (2008) and this nonmodern ontology, positing it as a template for animistic slasher horror, where humans and nonhumans connect and disconnect on the axis of personhood, and the transition from relationality to individuality is depicted as a threat.

Si dimostra che l’idea dell’italianità, considerata finora piuttosto sul piano linguistico e culturale, era altrettanto inerente al progetto di una modernita basata sulle scienze naturali. Il paradigma delle scienze naturali, corrente all’epoca, si diffuse in prima linea attraverso le opere divulgative e belletristiche dell’antropologo e medico Paolo Mantegazza (1831-1910). Mantegazza si sentiva investito, accanto ai suoi colleghi, di contribuire alla formazione del „carattere italiano“ e di creare - con i propri strumenti - l’uomo nuovo che, libero da ogni infermita fisica e sano sul piano mentale e psicologico, si sarebbe distinto per la sua produttivita e la sua cultura avanzata. Abstract Widely considered a hermetic text of avant-garde modernism for its inaccessibility to the “common reader,” James Joyce’s magnum opus Ulysses is literally esoteric with allusions to Kabbalistic concepts, terms of Hindu cosmology, Trinitarian heresies, and Continental mystics; quasi-ironic references to Dublin Theosophists; the protagonist Leopold Bloom’s Freemasonry; and structural use of Platonic/Aristotelian metaphysics. However, the esotericism of Ulysses is not confined to the text’s cavalier allusiveness. Nor is the religious origin of Joyce’s art merely part of the personal mythology of the author, a relapsed Catholic, whose Eucharistic aesthetic endeavors to “transmut[e] the daily bread of experience into the radiant body of everliving life.” This article argues that esotericism is a fundamental principle underlying the composition of Ulysses, its envisaged relationship with the “implied reader,” and its larger socio-cultural ramifications. It explores the literary esotericism of Ulysses as analogous to religious esotericism with reference to: the idea of the book as cosmos with the chaotic “word” as its prima materia; its archetypal/symbolic consciousness; the idea of infinity as a hermeneutic principle; manifestation of the ideas of initiation and secrecy as hermeneutic challenges; the self-imposed antithetical character of avant-garde modernism vis-à-vis the mainstream; and the possibility of deciphering a Joycean “vision.”

Mina Loy and Diane di Prima’s experimental poetic contributions to their early “situational avant-gardes” (the 1910s Modernists and late 1950s Beats in New York) vindicated the relation of gender and experiment within their countercultural movements, redefining these groups’ poetic and ideological tenets. Firstly, I will connect and contextualize these two poets as part of American feminist avant-garde tradition. Then, I will study their early poetry’s specificities and their common particularity: a gendered approach to the interconnectivity between experiment and experience. The article develops the idea that Loy and di Prima’s “motional” poetics of alternate forces of expression and linguistic experimentation is a dynamic materialization of the ambivalence involved in their bodily and spatial experiences of inclusion and exclusion as bohemian women poets in their urban environment and their artistic communities. The last section theorizes the way these embodied positionalities, and the continuum formed by environment, space, body and language, interrelate with Loy and di Prima’s feminist motional avant-garde poetics based on material feminist philosophies and postmodern and experimental literary critics’ views.

Abstract In reference to the paradoxical classification of art in Kafka’s Josefine story, religious aspects of the artist’s performances and their effect on the audience are scrutinized. The leading question is to what extent it evokes an allusion to the primal scene of divine revelation, following Stéphane Mosès’ commentary in his readings of the Bible. Josefine’s singing with a “nothing of a voice”, reduced to “the slightest of nullities”, the zero-point of signification, nevertheless affects an experience of presence and community that touches the listeners’ entire being. From the perspective of the artist, her song recitals are manifestations of supreme art of which she claims a soteriological significance in respect of her audience who belongs in Kafka’s portrayal obviously to the Jewish people. Around such a tension between maximal restraint of an utterance (the voice onset of the aleph of the word anokhi/I) and all-encompassing meaning (the name of God and all Commandments whose acceptance is constitutive for the Jewish people) circle the theological exegeses of the Sinai-scene (esp. Ex. 20,1) in the tradition of Rashi and Maimonides, in modernity e.g. of Gershom Scholem in dispute with Walter Benjamin on Kafka. It will be shown that the depicted paradoxes of Josefine’s art performances unfold the mentioned tension as an original literary reflection on revelation and language under the conditions of modernity.

By reconstructing the acts and voices of technological artifacts in A cidade e as serras (1901), this paper outlines what I call Eça de Queirós’s technological “twilight zone,” where machines are granted literary citizenship, and human interlocutors are forced to reevaluate who and what counts as humanity and conversation. I argue that the unresponsiveness of technological artifacts to the human voice in A cidade e as serras reveals a process of destabilization of power hierarchies and vocal anthropocentrism. Eça neither demonizes nor glorifies machines; rather he elaborates ways in which productive coexistence and communication can remain a prime objective. In A cidade e as serras, Eça parses out anxieties about technology and modernity in subtle and balanced ways that can shed new light on enduring questions about humanmachine interactions in our era of technological dependence.
