Abstract:
AbstractTechnology for psychiatric prevention is poorly developed, and knowledge about the causes of mental Illness is difficult to apply to practical preventive work. As it would take many years before the effects of primary preventive efforts would be visible, secondary and tertiary prevention are essential to reducing the prevalence of mental illness. Recent studies on reducing the negative health consequences of acute stress seem to justify some optimism that psychosocially-oriented prevention is possible. Experience with the preventive benefits of social support at times of crisis suggests that active social support can prevent social disintegration at the community level and mental health problems for individuals.

Abstract:
Objective To describe the characteristics of schizophrenia relevant to conducting indicated preventive interventions. Method A systematic review of the literature informed by experiences at the Personal Assistance and Crisis Evaluation (PACE) clinic. Results Primary prevention requires a sophisticated knowledge of key causal risk factors relevant to the expression of a disorder. The causal risk factors most useful from an intervention standpoint may turn out to be somewhat removed from the neurobiology of the disorder and may even be relatively non-specific, so that tackling them could reduce the risks for a range of mental disorders. The frontier for more specific prevention in schizophrenia and related psychosis is currently represented by indicated preventive interventions for subthreshold symptoms. Again, these may be relatively broad spectrum early in the prepsychotic phase but more proximal to onset, greater treatment specificity can be explored. However, this can be viewed more as preventively orientated treatment rather than primary prevention per se. Early detection of first episode psychosis and optimal intensive treatment of first episodes and the critical early years after diagnosis also represent increasingly attractive preventive foci in psychotic disorders. Conclusion As evidence accumulates, implementation of evidence-based practice in real work settings is a major challenge as it is throughout the mental health service system. The momentum of preventively orientated treatment must be maintained through the 2nd National Mental Health Strategy and in the face of recent misleading polemic regarding the treatability of psychotic disorders, especially schizophrenia. The evidence demonstrates that schizophrenia and related disorders have never been more treatable.

Abstract:
The aim of the work is to study the theoretical and practical aspects of the emergence of drug addiction, types of preventive work in the fight against drug addiction, the peculiarities of its spread among adolescents. An assessment of the development of the drug situation in the Tambov Region for 2019 is given. According to the totality of criteria, the situation in the region is tense. The most difficult state is noted according to the following criteria: the proportion of drug-related crimes in the total number of registered criminal acts (“pre-crisis”); involvement of drug users in drug trafficking (“heavy”); criminality of drug addiction (“satisfactory”); the proportion of persons convicted of drug-related crimes in the total number of convicted persons (“heavy”); the proportion of young people in the total number of persons convicted of drug offenses (“tense”). The drug market of the Tambov Region is represented by synthetic drugs and their analogues, drugs of the cannabis group (marijuana, hashish), heroin. The main methods of the preventive fight against drug addiction in the Tambov Region are listed. Presumptive trends in drug trafficking associated with the use of “non-contact” methods of selling drugs, further merging of drug-related crime with cybercrime, involvement of non-drug users in drug trafficking, as well as an increase in the number of drug addicts among minors are indicated.

Abstract:
PurposeAlthough crisis communication via social media has engaged academia's attention during the disease outbreak, information value for preventive behaviors is inadequately studied. The purpose of this paper is to cast light on how to strengthen the uptake of older people's coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) behavioral outcomes due to information value and perceived threat through social media.Design/methodology/approachThis study designs a survey and applies structural equation modeling to examine a research framework. A sample comprises 334 Vietnamese older participants who have utilized social media.FindingsThe results illustrate that preventive behaviors are determined by perceived threat (i.e. severity and susceptibility). Furthermore, older people heighten risk perceptions based on information characteristics, including information relevance, informative support and source credibility. Lastly, information relevance is a strong predictor of source credibility.Practical implicationsThe findings assist practitioners to enhance crisis communication effectiveness via social media by imparting valuable information to the public. Moreover, this paper offers overarching guidelines on the improvement in credibility with creators, risk consciousness and preventive behaviors.Originality/valueAlthough earlier studies focused attentiveness on the power of social media for raising threat perceptions, this work seems the first to unveil informative motives for perceived COVID-19 threat across older individuals, which subsequently presents plausible reasons for behavioral disclosure, including facemask-wearing, hand-washing and social distancing.

Abstract:
The aim of the article is to identify new trends, patterns of corruption in the system of government and develop approaches to improving mechanisms to prevent and combat corruption in Ukraine. In the context of reforming modern Ukrainian society, the study of the development of mechanisms to prevent corruption is very relevant. In addition, given the deepening socio-political and financial-economic crisis in Ukraine, corruption is a serious threat to national security. According to international experience, a mechanism should be clearly established for the selection of specialists to work in the public administration sector. An effective set of tools to combat corruption in the state are, first of all, prohibitions and restrictions. The focus on overcoming the factors of corruption that are inherent in the sphere of state structures is the improvement of mechanisms. One of the effective mechanisms for preventing corruption is preventive measures in public bodies with a number of restrictions and prohibitions.

Abstract:
Purpose – For the past 50 years, the research literature has shown that employment can contribute to an individual's personal development. Yet, it has also shown that it can become a life-threatening stressor. Reported occupational suicides increased by 22.2 percent between 1995 and 2010, becoming a leading cause of death in the USA. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of six US government reports on employee suicides between 1995 and 2012. Design/methodology/approach – Through an interpretive case study approach (Yin, 2003), this study undertook a document analysis of key US government reports examining occupational suicides. Specifically, an analysis of three US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports was undertaken along with other documents, identifying key themes and facts. Findings – The analysis of the US government reports reveals a dim legal recognition of employee suicide as an occupational accident. The paper presents the characteristics of suicides as an occupational accident as well as the profile of a typical US occupational suicide victim. Finally, the paper discusses the main causes of employee suicide. Practical implications – Organizations have a “duty of care” to their employees, both physical and psychological. Human resource (HR) professionals ought to create preventive policies to minimize work-related suicides and have clear crisis management systems in place, should an employee commit suicide or threaten to do so. Originality/value – Occupational distress is not typically apparent or obvious and is not the subject of many studies in the field of HRs. Yet, because of its rampant increase in today's organizations, its direct connection with employee suicide and its impact on organizational revenues, psychological distress in the workplace merits closer attention. This paper is unique as it provides insights for HR professionals based on the analysis of US government reports on work-related suicides.

Objective. To determine the criteria for the application of preventive measures for individual computer program «Medical and psychological prevention of complications, and the normalization of physiological parameters in a hypertensive patient».Design and methods. With the financial support of the Government of the Russian Federation, the State contract № 6464r/9021 of 28.12.2008, we have developed and registered in the Federal Institute of Industrial Property preventive medical computer program «Medical and psychological prevention of complications, and the normalization of physiological parameters in a hypertensive patient» № 2011618469, state registration number 01200951860. We examined 180 patients (120 hypertensives and 60 controls) aged 20–70 years (mean age 35,5 ± 7,2 years), patients of the main group had a primary diagnosis of hypertension (I, II, III degree). We performed clinical neurological, standard laboratory and instrumental diagnostic examinations and psychodiagnostic testing, as well as the pulse measurements by cardiointervalography followed by mathematical analysis of the data by a special program.Results. Analysis of reactions in the interim period of adaptation (14–21 day) has shown its important role to predict the outcome of preventive measures. According to our data 88,2 % patients with hypertension III degree and 94,4 % patients with hypertension II degree demonstrated normalization of the blood pressure and improvement in general state, and the approach was beneficial in 100 % patients with hypertension I degree. Mean recovery time after hypertensive crisis was 15,0 ± 5,0 minutes in patients with hypertension I degree, 30,0 ± 10,0 minutes in patients with hypertension II degree (p < 0,001), and 45,1 ± 27,4 minutes in patients with III degree (p < 0,05). Patients, who used personal computer software, demonstrated the reduction of irritability, fatigue, improved sleep, memory, increased work effiiency, disappearance of sleepiness, and there was an increase in self-confidence.Conclusions. Thus, our results show that the use of individual computer program «B/P rate» leads to the reduction of the frequency and duration of hypertensive crises, as well as to the improvement of cognitive function and psychosocial parameters.

Abstract:
The article looks at the main groups of measures to prevent deliberately false messages about threats to citizens’ security, destruction or damage to property at the social level. Social prevention includes a system of economic, political, legal, cultural and educational measures aimed at overcoming crisis processes in society, in particular, such as unemployment, social inequality, political tension, legal nihilism, moral decline and the spiritual crisis. The implementation of such measures also influences the factors that cause crime, which can reduce the level of the latter. It is emphasized that general social prevention has an important criminological aspect, because it is the foundation, the basis of special criminological prevention. Socio-economic measures to prevent deliberately misrepresenting threats to the safety of citizens, destroying or damaging property are analyzed. It is emphasized that these measures occupy one of the central places in the system of preventive activity of the general social level. It is stated that, according to the constitutional approach, socially oriented policy is a part of internal state policy. It is summarized that practically all socio-economic transformations of our society at the present stage belong to all-social crime prevention measures. The general social level of crime prevention is largely determined by the state of the state’s economy, political situation, and the level of material state of the population. Among the socio-political measures are highlighted overcoming the political crisis, resolving the military conflict, overcoming corruption in public authorities. The most important cultural and educational activities are the organization of leisure, educational work, promotion of healthy lifestyles and sports. As a conclusion, it is stated that socially oriented and economically justified state policy by itself contains a set of general social measures for prevention of crimes, including – deliberately false reports about threat to the safety of citizens, destruction or damage to property objects.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTBackground:Health crises in persons living with dementia challenge their caregivers to make pivotal decisions, often under pressure, and to act in new ways on behalf of their care recipient. Disruption of everyday routines and heightened stress are familiar consequences of these events. Hospitalization for acute illness or injury is a familiar health crisis in dementia. The focus of this study is to describe the lived experience of dementia family caregivers whose care recipients had a recent unplanned admission, and to identify potential opportunities for developing preventive interventions. Methods:Family caregivers (n = 20) of people with dementia who experienced a recent hospitalization due to an ambulatory care sensitive condition or fall-related injury completed phone interviews. Interviews used semi-structured protocols to elicit caregivers’ reactions to the hospitalization and recollections of the events leading up to it.Results:Analysis of interview data identified four major themes: (1) caregiver is uncertain how to interpret and act on the change; (2) caregiver is unable to provide necessary care; (3) caregiver experiences a personal crisis in response to the patient's health event; (4) mitigating factors may prevent caregiver crises. Conclusions:This study identifies a need for clinicians and family caregivers to work together to avoid health crises of both caregivers and people with dementia and to enable caregivers to manage the health of their care recipients without sacrificing their own health and wellness.

Abstract:
Title: Crisis prevention work in health care - A study that highlights the importance of crisis plans and other crisis preparations for decisions on resource allocations in a crisis situation caused by an external incident.    Level: Student thesis, final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration   Authors: Elina Ylvenius and Torbjörn Olsson   Supervisor: Emilia Kvarnström   Date: 2021 - June   Aim: To create a deeper understanding of the importance of different types of crisis prevention work in healthcare when it comes to making decisions during an ongoing external crisis. The purpose is to increase knowledge about the importance of crisis plans and other crisis preparations for healthcare workers' decision-making in a crisis situation caused by an external incident.   Method: The study uses two qualitative research methods in parallel. The empirical material consists of data from semi-structured interviews that are based on four sub-areas: Experience in healthcare, crisis management and crisis preparedness, resource allocation and decision-making. The empirical data is also based on policy documents such as regional crisis management plans.   Results and conclusions: The study shows that emergency preparedness planning in the form of control documents does not work in practice. It also shows that the control documents' perception varies between different positions in healthcare. Finally, the study shows which crisis preparation measures are actually perceived to work in practice.   Contribution of the thesis: The research contributes to an understanding of how crisis management in healthcare works in practice. It contributes to an understanding of healthcare workers’ own perceptions of various emergency preparedness measures. The essay shows how experience and other types of crisis preparation affect healthcare during an external crisis.   Suggestions for future research: To find out why the structure of the crisis prevention plans does not work in practice in healthcare. It feels highly relevant to try to create an understanding of this and create an image of why their function is lacking when it comes to functioning as part of healthcare's crisis management.   Key words: Management, organization, crisis management, preventive crisis work, decision-making, healthcare, resource allocation

Abstract:
Opioid use disorder impedes dependent parents' abilities to care for their children. In turn, children may languish in unpredictability and persistent chaos. Societal responses to these children are often guided by a belief that unless the drug dependent parent receives treatment, there is little help for the child. While a preponderance of the drug dependence research is adult-centric, a significant body of research demonstrates the importance of not only addressing the immediate well being of the children of drug dependent caregivers but preventing the continuing cycle of drug dependence. The present commentary demonstrates through a brief review of the US history of drug dependence crises and research from the 1980s and 1990s, a range of “tried and true” family, school, and community interventions centered on children. We already know that these children are at high risk of maladjustment and early onset of drug dependence; early intervention is critical; multiple risk factors are likely to occur simultaneously; comprehensive strategies are optimal; and multiple risk-focused strategies are most protective. Where we need now to turn our efforts is on how to effectively implement and disseminate best practices, many of which we learned in the 1980s and 1990s. The greatest opportunity in both changing the nature of the opioid epidemic at scale and influencing rapid translation of existing research findings into policy and practice is not in asking what to do, but in asking how to do the right things well, and quickly.

Abstract:
The opioid crisis has accounted for 770 000 deaths in the United States over the past 20 years, a number approximately equal to the first 20 years of the AIDS epidemic.1 A substantial portion of these deaths were the direct result of overprescription of opioids, and many others were caused by former prescription opioid users migrating to less expensive and easier to obtain heroin and synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl and its analogues. The opioid crisis has contributed to the decline in US overall life expectancy for 3 consecutive years; the first 3 year-on-year decline in US life expectancy since the 1918 flu pandemic.

Abstract:
Purpose of Review: The purpose of this review is to address infection with HIV and hepatitis C in the Appalachian region of the USA and the driving forces underlying this epidemic. We seek to discuss epidemiology of disease and the possible interventions to reduce incidence and burden of disease in this resource-limited area. Recent Findings: The rise of the opioid crisis has fueled a rise in new hepatitis C infection, and a rise in new HIV infection is expected to follow. Injection drug use has directly contributed to the epidemic and continues to remain a risk factor. Men who have sex with men remains a significant risk factor for HIV acquisition as well. Summary: Progress has been made in the battle against HIV and, to a lesser extent, hepatitis C, but much more can be done. Limited data on co-infection with HIV/HCV are currently available for this at-risk region, but it is clear that Appalachia is highly vulnerable to co-infection outbreaks. A multipronged approach that includes advances in assessment of co-infection and education for both patients and clinicians can help to recognize, manage, and ideally prevent these illnesses.

Abstract:
Sexual and Gender-Based Violence constitutes one of the major protection concerns in displacement settings, being the current Syrian crisis in Lebanon no exception. This has led international and Lebanese humanitarian actors to design and implement prevention and response programmes country-wide to ensure the protection of persons of concern. Yet, gender-related programmes seem to maintain a traditional approach which focuses disproportionately on women and girls. As for SGBV programmes, while women and girls do constitute the bulk of SGBV survivors, such traditional approach overlooks the need of other groups concerned by any gender and SGBV-related interventions. This holds especially true to men and boys, whose engagement in SGBV programming is still conceived in silos, usually included in prevention programmes in their role as perpetrators. Working with men and boys survivors is not widespread and there is no consistent attempt to involve men across all stages in programmes. With no aim to compromise the much needed interventions with women and girls, this Master’s thesis aims at exploring an enhanced men-inclusive approach to SGBV programmes through the exploration of a tool called the men’s lens. By analyzing how Syrian refugee men’s own masculinities and manhood and their linkages to their social positioning influence the emergence of SGBV, this Master’s thesis explores the feasibility of such approach through interviews and a set of recommendations to humanitarian actors in Lebanon. As such, the thesis contributes to bringing together academia and the humanitarian realm, contextualising the men’s lens to the reality on the ground. This includes the adoption of a practical focus on the intertwinement between SGBV, masculinities and intersectionality among Syrian refugees in Lebanon, with the ultimate goal of contributing to improving current SGBV programmes in the Syria crisis.

AbstractThe crystallization of systemic risk in financial markets occurs when financial actors collectively (if unwillingly) bring on a major financial crisis through the withholding of credit and asset fire sales. The management and prevention of such calamities is our focus. We introduce the tools of political science, especially governance and institutional analysis, to help us probe the key dynamics at work. We then show that where appropriate knowledge and governance arrangements can be put in place, collective action may be arranged to help prevent the crystallization of systemic risk. We use the euro crisis to help illustrate our arguments.

Abstract:
This chapter assesses the range of preventive interventions in labour market regulation. In relation to preventive orders in labour market enforcement, the chapter queries whether there are good reasons to resort to criminal law in situations where civil enforcement mechanisms might be improved. This also raises uncomfortable questions of a government that has presided over onerous tribunal fees impeding access to justice, and the pursuit of deregulation of labour standards and restriction of trade unions. The chapter considers whether the enforcement crisis is being produced by ‘bad’ employers or by the political choices of our elected representatives. The most effective form of prevention would be worker-protective labour law, supported by access to justice and strong trade unions. Preventive criminal law is a response to an avoidable crisis that has been brought about by specific political choices. Nevertheless, the penetration of these preventive orders into labour law fits with the more general expansion of preventive criminal measures in different spheres of social life.

Abstract:
COVID-19 has altered the mental health of the global population. The fear of getting sick, combined with other factors from a healthcare crisis—fear of losing loved ones, social isolation, unemployment, uncertainty about the future, etc.—have created the perfect environment for a greater development of psychological health disorders. All sectors of society are being affected by these changes, including above all, college students. The aim of this chapter is to observe the specific disorders college students may develop and what teachers can do about them. A language exchange project will be proposed as an integrated and preventive tool. It will also constitute a resource for eventual mental health disorders management. The combination of these two realities—mental health and education—should work as the basis for further investigation on integrated projects.

Abstract:
In chapter 6 we explore the impact of commissioning and policy changes on early intervention and preventative services for children delivered by the charitable sector. The definition of early intervention and preventative services is highly contested and politicised within policy and commissioning processes. This reflects an ongoing debate regarding the shifting paradigm of prevention. As the commissioning narrative has developed, there has been an overall disengagement between the voluntary sector providers and State. As the charitable sector is increasingly exposed to intensifying marketization, polarisation of relationships increases. We identify here three ‘types’ of organisational responses to this ever-changing environments; conformers – those charities who align themselves close to the State and regularly reinterpret their mission to fit State logic; the outliers – those charities which reject State approaches to early intervention and seek to deliver services completely independently of the State; and the intermediaries – those charities which walk between conformity and dissent, working with the State when necessary or too their advantage, and walking away when not. We discuss how these types fundamentally alter children’s charities perspectives and experiences of commissioning and the impact this has on their wider work.

An effective public health response to the opioid crisis includes understanding the many different contributors to the crisis and the need for a comprehensive versus piecemeal approach to addressing it. In this chapter, the authors add to prior work that describes the essential elements of a comprehensive response to the opioid crisis. Building on their commentary published in 2018, the authors state that there is a need to propel the governmental public health agency response well beyond its traditional role as data broker and convener of primarily health care partners toward a more contemporary and much-needed focus on the primary prevention of opioid misuse and addiction that forges new ground with social service agencies, employment and housing programs, law enforcement and corrections, addiction treatment providers and substance abuse prevention agencies, and many other sectors equally engaged in ending the opioid crisis.

Abstract:
Behavioural crime linkage (BCL) analyses offender crime scene behaviour with the aim of identifying groups of crimes that share similar (and distinctive) behaviours. This allows police to infer that the same person/s were responsible for crimes, allowing them to be “linked” as a crime series. Successful BCL can increase the quantity and quality of evidence available to the police, which increase the likelihood of apprehending and successfully prosecuting the offender. This chapter will review the theoretical framework underpinning BCL (behavioural consistency and behavioural distinctiveness) and summarise key literature on rape and sexual assault - including the latest, cutting-edge, collaborative work jointly-led by academics and law enforcement practitioners. The chapter will also outline (using real life case studies) how BCL can be used to support the investigation of sexual offences, and will critically discuss future research directions and how this work might enhance the detection, prosecution, and prevention of serial sexual offending.

Abstract:
This chapter aims at understanding the dynamics that led to the exchange and value co-creation/co-production in the interaction between P.A. and citizens during natural calamities. In addition, it proposes a horizontal communication model in which both actors cooperate to respond to crisis, a semantic and semiotic space on the net able to satisfy their information needs. When natural disasters occur, citizens' primary need is to reach as much information as possible about the status of loved ones possibly involved in the accident, road traffic, how to give an effective contribution to the cause without hindering, etc. On the other hand, P.A. and rescuers need to know as much information as possible about the reports, on the site of the disaster so as to intervene promptly to help the population in danger. Therefore, P.A. and citizens are called upon to cooperate to guarantee crisis containment, crisis management, and also future crisis prevention.

Abstract:
Competition law as one of the foundations of a market economy whose main purpose is to ensure an equal position of entrepreneurs in the market, regardless of the size, market power and other features of the implied system of state aid both at central and local and regional level. The aim and purpose of this research is a clear and tentative way of pointing out the importance of competition in relation to coronavirus. In order to achieve this goal, the paper seeks to provide scientifically based answers to a number of current issues, starting from detention from the definitions of competition and coronavirus. In addition to the above, it is necessary to consider how this disease affected entrepreneurship, which had positive and negative consequences. In addition, it is important to note that it has left a significant impact on our mental health. The main results of the research point to the fact that the coronavirus as a global, economic and health crisis suddenly caught us all overnight and as such changed our lives. In addition to greatly affecting the economy, there is also a blow to the company. In case of suspicion of infection, the obligation to call a doctor, ie a territorially competent epidemiologist, and the obligation to go to an outpatient clinic are determined as a preventive measure. In this paper, qualitative research in correlation with quantitative research was used. Starting from the fact that quantitative research is based on the description of individual conditions, ie the establishment of cause-and-effect relationships, the paper in a representative way seeks to simplify the concept of competition as the driving force of a market economy that entails many benefits consumer choice, innovation. In addition, considering the coronavirus from a quantitative point of view, it is manifested in how the coronavirus as a new strain of virus, discovered in humans, 'stirred' the whole world as such forced people to care about their health and the health of our loved ones. Also, an obligation to adhere to epidemiological measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection has been introduced. Qualitative research, as a term used to describe research that focuses on the way individuals and groups view and understand the world, also has a significant impact on this work, primarily because it considers how the pandemic affected the health of people interacting with each other.

Abstract:
The socio-economic impact of the pandemic on all social spheres is huge, but like any crisis, for some it is an opportunity to create, develop and promote solutions. The coronavirus pandemic has brought many changes. It has forced us all to find new ways of working, interacting and living. The field of intellectual property is particularly affected by the coronavirus pandemic, its strong influence has affected all branches of intellectual property, especially the field of copyright and patents. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, numerous anomalies in the consumption of copyrights were observed, which coincided with the isolation measures, from drastically increased consumption of illegal pirated content via the Internet, especially in countries with lockdown, through a sharp increase of Disney+ and Netflix streaming platform users. The identification of products that have the word Corona in their name – in their trademark, with the virus has led to a sharp drop in consumption of some products, but also to increased sales of others. The pharmaceutical industry has invested huge funds in the fight against this global challenge, especially in the field of treatment of viruses, new drugs for the prevention, as well as finding a vaccine against COVID-19. This paper discusses the challenges faced by the management of intellectual property rights and potential response measures.

Abstract:
Preventing crimes or terrorist attacks in urban areas is challenging. Law enforcement officers need to respond quickly to catch the attacker on his escape route, which is subject to time-dependent traffic conditions on transportation networks. The attacker can strategically choose his escape path and driving speed to avoid being captured. Existing work on security resource allocation has not considered such scenarios with time-dependent strategies for both players. Therefore, in this paper, we study the problem of efficiently scheduling security resources for interdicting the escaping attacker. We propose: 1) a new defender-attacker security game model for escape interdiction on transportation networks; and 2) an efficient double oracle algorithm to compute the optimal defender strategy, which combines mixed-integer linear programming formulations for best response problems and effective approximation algorithms for improving the scalability of the algorithms. Experimental evaluation shows that our approach significantly outperforms baselines in solution quality and scales up to realistic-sized transportation networks with hundreds of intersections.

Abstract:
Abstract Nuclear reactor designs are governed by postulated accident events that may occur during their operational lifetime. One type of incident is a reactivity-initiated accident (RIA), during which a sudden surge of power in the fuel components within the core may result in the latter exceeding its cooling capabilities. This could lead to a departure from nucleate boiling (DNB) event which results in a significant decrease in heat transfer capabilities. Preventing the occurrence of a DNB crisis requires a fundamental understanding of the cladding-to-coolant heat transfer under fast transient conditions, as well as the governing hydrodynamic and design parameters that influence when the critical heat flux (CHF) will be exceeded. Presently, large uncertainties in computer models used to predict CHF have led to conservative safety limits governing light-water reactor (LWR) designs. The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is currently leading a combined effort that takes advantage of the restart of the Transient Reactor Test (TREAT) facility, to better understand the mechanism of CHF under in-pile pool boiling conditions. The goal of this laboratory directed project is to use the unique capabilities of TREAT coupled with a non-fueled nuclear heated borated stainless-steel 304 tube experiment within an experimental capsule. The borated tube will induce CHF in the surrounding coolant when subjected to a power pulse within the TREAT. The impacts of rapid surface heating effects as well as radiation-induced surface activation (RISA) will be experimentally investigated. This feature is a continuation to previous thermal hydraulics analysis that was conducted to inform on a test matrix for the design of the borated heater experiment. The borated tube was used in place of a solid rod so that the center axial region can be instrumented to allow for better experimental analysis. Therefore, it is desirable to design this rodlet so that the maximum heat flux occurs at the center of the axial length of the rod. The work presented here analyzes the potential to integrate axial boron gradients within this tube to shape its power curve. Several generic axial power shapes were initially considered. Natural boron concentrations between 0.1–2.0 wt.% were analyzed and a power coupling factor (PCF) was calculated for each. A self-shielding study was conducted to develop radial power profiles for several boron concentrations. These were then applied to three different power pulses to determine how these two parameters influence the chosen axial heat flux curve. Variations in the initial coolant temperature were investigated. Lastly, how the shape of the generic curve is affected following a DNB event was also studied. Two different CHF cases were included within the scope of this analyses; one during which CHF was exceeding along the entire axial region of the rod, and another where the former occurred at the center region only. The behavior of the curve overtime was investigated.
